Award Winning Transportation Magazine Proudly Serving Since 2004

Thanks for your continued patronage to our award-winning magazine serving Canada’s multicultural transportation industry! Inside this edition, you will find the latest developments and updates related to the industry plus all the regular columns and features. Peel’s Red Light Camera Program has recently been updated with 13 new locations. Red light cameras are a safety initiative to deter motorists from running red lights and are triggered when a vehicle enters the intersection on a red light. Red light runners cause rightangle T-bone collisions that are some of the worst and most deadly. There’s no good excuse for running a red and it’s not worth the risk. Applying red light cameras to new locations will condition drivers to improve awareness and we welcome this initiative. Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Brake Safety Day will be held on September 7. This is an enforcement and compliance campaign where law enforcement agencies across North America will conduct inspections on large trucks and buses to identify out-ofadjustment brakes, and brake-system and antilock braking system (ABS) violations as part of the CVSA Operation Airbrake Program. The goal of Brake Safety Day is to reduce the number of crashes caused by poorly maintained braking systems on commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) by conducting roadside mechanical fitness inspections, and identifying and removing vehicles with critical brake violations from our roadways. Congratulations to the entire management and workforce at Glasvan Great Dane for winning the 2016 Great Dane “Dealer of the Year” accolade for international sales in refrigerated trailers, aftermarket parts and platform trailers. This is another proud addition to the exceptional sales achievements and outstanding customer experiences amongst dealers in North, Central and South America. The Smart Trucker seminar series presented by Road Today Media Group and Bruce Outridge Enterprises is aimed to help drivers and owner operators become successful at their positions and businesses. Our next seminar will be held in Grimsby on September 12th where Shelley Uvanile-Hesch, an industry veteran and president of the Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada will offer insights on opportunities for women in the trucking industry. We look forward to put together an informative event with ample networking opportunities. Attendance is free but registration is required and can be done at www.roadtoday.com/smarttrucker We always appreciate your feedback and input. New Volvo Trucks Customer Center Opens at the New River Valley Plant

V

olvo Trucks North America celebrated the opening of its new Volvo Trucks Customer Center at its New River Valley (NRV) facility on July 11th. Built to showcase Volvo products, innovations and the brand in a dynamic way to engage visitors, the Volvo Trucks Customer Center was part of a $38.1 million investment in the Dublin, Virginia facility where all Volvo truck models for North America are assembled. “We are very pleased to open the Volvo Trucks Customer Center, which we believe will serve as a destination for all of our North American customers and other visitors,” said Göran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “Now, our trucks, engines

and transmissions are all spotlighted in one location, in a one-of-a-kind facility designed to offer a unique brand experience that only Volvo can offer.” Officials broke ground on the 36,000 square-foot custom-designed facility in September 2015. The facility includes a product showroom, two exhibit rooms, two pilot review rooms and a theater-inthe-round at the center of the building seating 290. The theater-in-the-round revolves and has an 82-foot turntable. An observation area allows customers to view the trucks traveling around the 1.1-mile Customer Experience Track, where banked corners enable highway speeds and numerous surfaces and grades permit drivers to experience difficult road conditions in a designated off-highway area.

The building design is shaped like the Volvo Trucks iron mark and was developed with unique Volvo detailing in mind, following a Scandinavian timeless design. The purpose of the facility is to provide customers, dealers and visitors a uniquely Volvo experience. In addition to the Customer Experience Center, the $38.1 million investment funded several plant upgrades to further improve the safety, quality and efficiency of NRV’s manufacturing processes. “This new facility recognizes the tremendous contribution that NRV employees deliver to the trucking industry and our customers,” said Franky Marchand, vice president and general manager at the plant. hursday, Sept. 7, 2017, is Brake Safety Day, an enforcement and compliance campaign where law enforcement agencies across North America will conduct inspections on large trucks and buses to identify out-of-adjustment brakes, and brake-system and antilock braking system (ABS) violations as part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Operation Airbrake Program. The goal of Brake Safety Day is to reduce the number of crashes caused by poorly maintained braking systems on commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) by conducting roadside mechanical fitness inspections, and identifying and removing vehicles with critical brake violations from our roadways. In addition, outreach and educational efforts by CMV inspectors, motor carriers and others are integral to the success of the campaign. Brake Safety Day activities seek to educate drivers, mechanics, owneroperators and others on the importance of proper brake maintenance, operation and performance. Properly functioning brake systems are crucial to safe CMV operation. CMV brakes are designed to hold up under tough conditions, but they must be routinely inspected and maintained carefully and consistently so they operate and perform properly throughout the vehicle’s

life. Improperly installed or poorly maintained brake systems can reduce braking efficiency and increase the stopping distance of trucks and buses, posing serious risks to all highway users and public safety. Antilock braking systems help the vehicle, and thus the driver, maintain control in certain situations, which reduces the risk of some types of crashes. Brake-related violations comprised the largest percentage (representing 45.7 percent) of all outof-service violations cited during Operation Airbrake’s companion International Road check campaign in 2016, which focused on inspections of both commercial motor vehicles and drivers. On Brake Safety Day, inspectors will primarily conduct the North American Standard Level I Inspection, which is a 37-step procedure that includes an examination of both driver operating requirements and vehicle mechanical fitness. Inspections conducted will include inspection of brake-system components to identify loose or missing parts, air or hydraulic fluid leaks, worn linings, pads, drums or rotors, and other faulty brakesystem components. ABS malfunction indicator lamps are also checked. Inspectors will measure pushrod stroke, where applicable. Vehicles with defective or out-ofadjustment brakes will be RT placed out of service.

K

enworth’s T680 onhighway flagship and T880 and T880S vocational

leaders are now available for order with the Cummins Westport ISL G Near Zero NOx emissions natural gas engine. The 8.9-liter Cummins Westport ISL G Near Zero is rated at 320 hp and 1,000 lbft of torque. Exhaust emissions of the ISL G NZ are 90 percent lower than the current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) NOx limit of 0.2 g/bhp-hr, and also meet the 2017 EPA greenhouse gas (GHG) emission requirements, according to Cummins Westport. The new engine uses advanced engine calibration, a unique

maintenance-free, three-way catalyst after-treatment system, and a closed crankcase ventilation system to help achieve this reduction. The engine operates on 100 percent natural gas, which can be carried on the vehicle in either compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG) form. The Cummins Westport ISL G Near Zero engine is also compatible with renewable natural gas (RNG), which can provide even further reductions in GHG emissions. “The Kenworth T680 and T880 specified with the ISL G Near Zero emissions engine are ideal for regional haul, vocational and refuse fleets focused on decreasing their environmental impact and reducing operating costs,” said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth marketing director. Volvo Active Driver Assist Now Standard on Volvo VNR, VNL Models

V

olvo Active Driver Assist is now standard equipment on the new Volvo VNR and VNL series, improving safety not only for truck drivers, but all motorists. Volvo Active Driver Assist includes Bendix Wingman Fusion, a comprehensive, camera- and radar-based collision mitigation system that is fully integrated with Volvo’s Driver Information Display. Volvo is the first heavy-duty truck OEM to offer Bendix Wingman Fusion as standard equipment. “Safety has always been part of the essence of Volvo Trucks, and it has been one of our core values since 1927,” said Göran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “Making Volvo Active Driver Assist with Bendix Wingman Fusion standard in Volvo VNR and VNL models demonstrates our commitment to improving the safety of everyone who travels on our roads.” Volvo Active Driver Assist combines camera and radar sensors to detect metallic objects and vehicles that are stationary or vehicles braking in front of a truck. If a metallic object of size is detected, audible and visual warnings are made to alert the driver, including red warning light flashes reflected on the windshield. Warnings are displayed up to 3.0 seconds before an imminent impact with the stationary object. If the system recognizes the stationary object as a vehicle, and the driver does not take action, Volvo Active Driver Assist will automatically alert the driver and engage the brakes to help the driver mitigate the potential collision. Braking assist is available at speeds greater than 15 mph Additionally, Volvo Active Driver

14

August 2017

Assist works with cruise control to help the driver maintain a set following distance behind the forward vehicle. If the forward vehicle slows down, Volvo Active Driver Assist will alert the driver and, if necessary, reduce throttle to the engine, apply the engine brake, downshift the Volvo I-Shift automated manual transmission and apply the foundation brakes and brake lights to help the driver maintain the set following distance gap based on the speed of the two vehicles. Thanks to the camera input, Volvo Active Driver Assist also integrates a Lane Departure Warning System with Data Capture capability. This system alerts drivers when an unintentional lane change (one in which the turn signal is not activated) occurs and can be turned off by the driver for 15 minutes when traveling through construction zones or other areas where lane markings may be unclear or confusing. The system reactivates automatically after 15 minutes, though the driver has the option to reactivate it manually. Lane departure warnings do not occur if the turn signal is activated or brakes are

applied. Volvo Active Driver Assist with Bendix Wingman Fusion is fully integrated with Volvo’s Driver Information Display and requires no additional displays or hardware kits. Its complete integration enables drivers to more quickly react to warnings. The system is also integrated with Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology (VEST) to help drivers avoid rollover and loss-of-control situations on dry, wet, snow- and ice-covered roadways. Volvo was the first commercial vehicle OEM to make full stability standard on its highway tractors. The system relies on data from a front bumper-mounted radar sensor and a windshieldmounted camera and offers a series of visual and audible alerts depending on the forward distance of the front object. Cruise control does not have to be engaged for the Volvo Active Driver Assist system to work. With a detection range of 22 degrees wide and 500 feet in front of the truck, the radar systems can detect the angle, speed and distance of an object ahead. A camera with a viewing angle greater than 42 degrees complements the radar and can determine the size and lane position, as well as other characteristics of an object. Volvo Active Driver Assist complements safe driving practices and is not intended to enable or encourage aggressive driving. No commercial vehicle safety technology replaces a skilled, alert driver exercising safe driving techniques and proactive, comprehensive driver training. Responsibility for the safe operation of the vehicle remains with the driver at all times. RT

INDUSTRY REPORT

10,000 years stuck in traffic: Infrastructure gaps block Canadian productivity, new Chamber report finds

L

ack of proper transportation infrastructure is a major barrier to Canada’s access to market and to its competitiveness, leading to lost opportunities and wasted time for both Canadian companies and residents, says a new report by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. “As Canadians head out on vacation this summer, they will be spending longer periods in their cars, stuck in traffic because of inadequate road infrastructure, including poorlymaintained roadways, interchanges and bridges. Unfortunately, it won’t stop after their vacations, either. Congested transportation systems – and the loss of time and productivity that comes with them - have become a reality for tens of thousands of businesses and their employees,” said Perrin Beatty, CEO and President of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber’s report, titled Stuck in Traffic for 10,000 Years: Canadian Problems that Infrastructure Investment Can Solve examines the effects of traffic congestion in major cities, ranging from lowered employee productivity to delays in moving goods and services. The report outlines several other infrastructure challenges that government must target to keep Canada competitive, such as:

•F acilitating trade along the AsiaPacific Gateway and corridor • Improving digital access and infrastructure • Maximizing potential in Canada’s North • Enhancing the Ontario-Quebec trade corridor • Getting Canadian oil and gas to markets • Green electrification and transmission “Inconsistent public investment in our transportation systems is a hindrance to small and large businesses alike with real environmental and economic

costs. Canadians in the country’s largest cities are collectively losing over 10,000 years sitting in their cars every year, time that could be much better spent,” Mr. Beatty said. “As MPs tour Canada this

summer making infrastructure announcements, we need to ask, ‘are these investments being spent in the right places?’” he concluded. RT

An increase in seat travel fore and aft, as well as up and down, improves driving ergonomics. Premium features like seat heating and ventilation are also available. That comfort extends to the four sleeper cab configurations available in the new Volvo VNL series. Designed to provide drivers a comfortable place to rest after a long day on the road, the sleeper options are packed with a number of space-saving, comfortboosting innovations. Additionally, an all-new, full 70-inch sleeper is available in the Volvo VNL 760 and 740 models, taking Volvo’s legendary comfort to an all-time high.

All VNL sleepers feature curved cabinets that open toward the back to maximize space, as well as an integrated, reclining bunk, which is a trucking industry first in North America. LED interior lighting reduces power consumption and provides softer lighting. A redesigned sleeper control panel allows drivers to control heating and cooling, and adjust the audio system from a more ergonomic position on the bunk. In addition, drivers can lock the doors or activate a panic alarm if needed. For the first time in North America, Volvo’s Globetrotter trim levels will be available on the VNL 760 and VNL 860 sleeper models. Long a symbol of ultimate driver comfort, the Globetrotter trim levels include a full aerodynamic package, polished wheels, high-end seating, as well as a refrigerator, inverter and parking cooler package. Uncompromised Efficiency The VNL series comes standard with the 13-liter Volvo D13 engine, while Daycab and VNL 400 models can spec

the 11-liter Volvo D11 as an option. The 15-liter Cummins X15 is also available in the VNL series. The Volvo VNL is also available with the Volvo D13 Turbo Compound (D13 TC) engine that utilizes a mechanical waste heat recovery system to capture wasted energy from the engine’s exhaust. The result is an additional 50 horsepower fed back to the crankshaft and an improvement in fuel efficiency of up to 6.5 percent. The new Volvo VNL series not only turns heads on the road, but also in the wind tunnel. Its sleek new design better controls airflow around the truck and its trailer, resulting in improved fuel efficiency. When combined with the efficiency benefits derived from the D13 TC, the new VNL delivers up to a 7.5 percent increase in fuel efficiency when compared to a 2015 VNL model equipped with a GHG 2014 D13 engine. The entire Volvo VNL series comes standard with Volvo’s I-Shift automated manual transmission, which is fully integrated with Volvo engines. With a full array of sensors detecting speed, grade and load, the I-Shift knows when to shift, hold a gear or coast in neutral. Also, by eliminating traditional shifting, the I-Shift enables the driver to focus on the job. The Safety Leader Volvo Active Driver Assist by Bendix, which is now standard on all Volvo VNL models, is a camera and radarbased system that combines forward collision mitigation warnings and active braking, even with stationary vehicles. The system features an industry-first heads up windshield display if a driver approaches too closely to an object in front of them. If no driver action is taken, the system can automatically apply the brakes to help mitigate a collision. N

avistar announced that its integrated OnCommand Connection Telematics solution, launched in March, is now available for purchase. It offers truck and bus drivers and fleets an easyto-use, comprehensive, oneprice solution that can help drastically cut the cost of vehicle maintenance, while seamlessly handling virtually all federal and state compliance needs. Navistar announced the solution’s availability at the Walcott Truckers Jamboree, an annual celebration of truck drivers, in order to highlight the added benefits the solution will provide for individual owner/ operators and small fleets. “Only about 30 percent of small fleets are benefiting from the amazing power of telematics,” said Terry Kline, Navistar senior vice president and chief information officer. “In keeping with our DriverFirst philosophy and Uptime mission, we developed OnCommand Connection Telematics to make this information easily available and useable for the entire industry, from owner/ operators to large fleets, on an

integrated, predictable and easyto-understand basis.” OnCommand Connection Telematics is a combined hardware and software solution that provides a steady stream of real-time vehicle data, linked to GPS and other sources of data that can help drivers and fleets become safer, more productive and more profitable. This telematics solution is integrated with a new and improved version of the award-winning OnCommand Connection Advanced Remote Diagnostics system, which currently supports more than 300,000 vehicles of all makes and models. OnCommand Connection Advanced Remote Diagnostics provides not just comprehensive data on each vehicle’s health, but also easy-tofollow fault code action plans, all served up in a convenient webbased portal in a user-friendly dashboard format. OnCommand Connection Telematics and Advanced Remote Diagnostics are also integrated with OnCommand Connection Electronic Driver Log (EDL), which automates federal Hours of Service compliance requirements that are mandated for all heavy

duty trucks by December 18, 2017. OnCommand Connection Electronic Driver Log also aides in fuel tax reporting, vehicle inspection reports, vehicle idling reports and vehicle trip mapping history, in order to make the driver’s job easier and more productive, while feeding this information to the back office to enable greater efficiencies. To assure maximum freedom and flexibility for drivers and fleets to use only the services that are right for them, OnCommand Connection Telematics carries no contract signup fee and no termination fee. ELD SOLUTIONS DEVICE NOW SELFCERTIFIED ON FMCSA ELD REGISTRY

E

Company makes ELD mandate compliance simple and quick

LD Solutions (ELDS), which launched earlier this year, is intensely focused on helping fleets and drivers meet the federal electronic logging device (ELD) compliance rule that goes into effect this December. The company has announced that its device registration and self-certification with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is complete. “We’re excited that ELDS’ device is now certified by the FMCSA,” said Jeffrey Farrington, vice president of ELDS. “Our primary goal has always been to provide the easiest-to-implement solution for the industry. We’ve carefully and intentionally designed a device that gives companies and

28

owner-operators the simplest solution for ELD mandate compliance. ELDS is proud to offer a product that is FMCSA registered and compliant and one that simplifies every step of the process from ordering to installation and training.” FMCSA’s mandate requires the majority of commercial drivers to transition to electronic logging devices by December 18, 2017. ELD manufacturers are required to register their device with the FMCSA and self-certify that the ELD meets the technical specifications of the ELD rule

and is compliant. This ensures that drivers will have ELDs that are accurate and compliant when recording and storing information. The registered and certified FMCSA device from ELDS meets and exceeds all minimum requirements of the new law. With no up-front costs, ELDS offers dedicated-device packages and bring-your-own-device (BYOD) packages that vary from simple ELD compliance to a full suite of telematics tools. A simple, competitive monthly fee is all that is needed for companies to gain access to the ELDS app from one easy-to-navigate website. Each ELDS package includes a tablet, ELD module, ECM plugs and quick-start instructions. RT

13 New Locations for Peel’s Red Light Cameras P eel’s Red Light Camera Program has been updated with 13 new locations. 11 of the 26 existing locations were decommissioned and the other 15 existing locations have been refurbished and retained to maintain a total of 28 locations in Peel. Staff evaluated the locations based on the “Safety Performance Function” model to determine locations with the highest potential for improvements with a red light camera. Staff also consulted with Peel Regional Police on new and existing locations to determine the final locations. Red light cameras are a safety initiative to deter motorists from running red lights. The 13 new locations that are effective since June 30, 2017 are: 1. Steeles Avenue East at Bramalea Go Station Entrance 2. Derry Road West at Financial Drive 3. They are connected to the traffic light (signal) and to sensors that are installed just before the stop line. The system constantly monitors the traffic light (signal), and the camera takes a picture of any vehicle that doesn’t stop at the red light. Photos are reviewed by the Provincial Offence Officers and tickets are mailed to owners of the vehicles. A career in trucking is much like perfecting a golf swing

D

o you ever find that it seems like no matter how much you work on your trucking career there always seems to be a curve you didn’t see coming? You could be driving for five years, ten years, or twenty years and there will still be something you didn’t expect to happen. If you have read any of my columns in the past you may have noticed that I am big on trip planning. To me it doesn’t matter whether going across town or across the Country, trip planning is an important part of a truck driver’s life. The goal of doing trip planning is to minimize hazards and reduce delays when delivering freight. If it is important for us to do that with a single trip how important is it for us to do this with our career as a driver. Am I really asking you to trip plan your career? Well sort of, you won’t be able to plan out your whole career and here is why. A trucking career is much like a game of golf. Now I know many truck drivers may not have time to play golf on a regular basis due to the nature of the job so I will explain my analogy. I never played golf during my driving career but I know many drivers that do. The thing about golf is that it is frustrating and captivating at the same time. When you first start to learn to play the game your whole goal is to hit the ball. Once you have mastered hitting the ball you move onto trying to hit the ball straight. Once you’ve mastered hitting the ball straight you begin to focus on how far you can hit it. You then move into perfecting your putting game and chipping the ball in a pro-like fashion. This may sound like trip planning for golf. You just

Bruce Outridge Bruce Outridge drove transport trucks across North America for over 25 years. He now runs his own business as an entrepreneur and is a professional cartoonist, author, and consultant for the industry. create a road map of starting at first base and then moving onto the next step and so on until you’re a pro golfer. If it were that easy all of us would be pro golfers. I started golfing about five years ago and consider myself on the first step. In fact a few years ago I took a lesson in driving the ball from a professional trainer. I told him after that first lesson that when I perfected the technique he showed me I would be back for the second lesson. That was four years ago and I am still working on the first lesson. That’s the point! Your trucking career is much like a golf game. It can take years to bring a career to perfection. Just when you think you have it down and you’re making good money, the next day will take you back as though you just started on

the job. There is no rhyme or reason for this other than stuff happens and you have to deal with it. You will have days where you lose your shirt and other days where the job just seems to easy. Keeping to your plan is the best way to minimize those days when things aren’t going right. They will happen but if you know where you want to go, have a basic plan on how you want to get there, and work hard to attain your goal you will make it. Just like a golf game with eighteen holes when you have a bad hole you don’t just stop the game. You play it out and do your best on the next hole to get back on your game. If you have enough good holes you just might come out ahead of the others at the end of the game. So even if you are having a bad day today, work on making it a better day tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of your summer! RT August 2017

Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

HELP SAVE LIVES. MOVE OVER.

Maximize today’s digital tools for better health

M

any of us are eager to take advantage of today’s digital tools to manage our health. We want to book doctor appointments, check test results online, renew prescriptions electronically and access more telehealth services. Fortunately, health organizations are working towards making care more convenient and accessible. With today’s technological advances, the opportunities are endless to help people navigate the various health care options. Green Shield Canada, a not-for-profit

that strives to improve access to health care for all Canadians, partners with various organizations across the country that share their same commitment to accessible treatment. Two of the organizations are 211 and Maryvale. 211 offers onestop access through a telephone helpline and a comprehensive website that connects users to various health, community and social services. Maryvale is a children’s mental health treatment centre in Ontario that uses text messaging for appointments and

incorporates various social media apps to support their clients’ treatment and recovery. “Technology is moving so fast and we need to stay current to engage our clients,” explains Connie Martin, their executive director. With technological tools becoming more entrenched in all aspects of our lives, Canadians are gaining more access to the health supports we need. Find more information online at www.greenshield.ca. TransCore Link Logistics Launches RateIndex Multi-Lanes to Help Trucking Companies Simplify the Quoting Process

T

ransCore Link Logistics has announced the release of Rate Index Multi-Lanes, an application designed to ease the process retrieving truckload spot rates from multiple lanes. “We launched Multi-Lanes to simplify the time-consuming processes trucking companies and freight brokers must currently undergo to provide their customers with rate quotes on multiple lanes,” says Claudia Milicevic, senior director & general manager at TransCore Link Logistics. The process is fast and easy. Users can drop their requests into a spreadsheet that is delivered through secure communications to produce key data, such as:

• V ariable truckload rates for previous 90 and 365 days to compare user industry knowledge with real-time and historical fluctuations, as well as number of contributors on each lane, • C ity-to-city and market-tomarket per mile high, average and low rates to better rate analytics, and • T ruck-to-load ratio for the previous 7 and 30 days to monitor and identify more recent capacity variances. Multi-Lanes was designed to speed up the request for quotation process by providing companies a single platform to analyze and compare truckload rates across multiple lanes.

Truckload spot rates in specific areas can be accessed from TransCore’s truckload rating tool, and real-time and historical data on total truck and load volumes, as well as ratios in specific areas can be accessed from TransCore’s Posting Index. TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index accurately measures trends in the truckload freight spot market. The components of the Freight Index are comprised from roughly 5,500 of Canada’s trucking companies and freight brokers; this data includes all domestic, cross-border and interstate data submitted by Loadlink customers. Osteoarthritis of the Knee

O

ne of the most frequent complaints that I encounter in my clinic among professional truck drivers is knee pain. Although there are many possible causes of knee pain, osteoarthritis is the most common cause in my patients over the age of fifty. Interestingly, I tend to treat more osteoarthritis of the left knee in drivers. This may be due to the fact that it is the leg that presses the clutch. While age is a major risk factor for osteoarthritis, even young people can develop it. Excessive body weight is also a common cause. Although an increase in body weight puts pressure on many joints of the body, it mostly affects the knees. Scientists have concluded that there is also a hereditary component to osteoarthritis. Thus, if any member of your family has been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, you are at a greater risk. So, what is osteoarthritis exactly? Essentially, it is a condition in which the cartilage inside the knee joint deteriorates due to wear and tear. This in turn leads to less shock absorption within the knee joint as well as rubbing of the bones that make up the joint. All of this results in pain, swelling and stiffness of the knee joint. A decrease in joint mobility and creaking of the joint are also common symptoms. The symptoms of osteoarthritis tend to increase during physical activity and subside with

rest. If you suspect that you have osteoarthritis of the knee, it is important to consult with your doctor. He or she will be able to diagnose this condition by taking a detailed medical history and performing a physical examination. If necessary, your doctor will request special testing such as x-ray and MRI to better visualize the joint. The primary goal of treatment is to reduce pain and inflammation and restore joint mobility. Treatment plans usually include a combination of exercise, weight loss, and medication. The most common drugs prescribed for osteoarthritis are pain relievers and anti-inflammatories. If conservative treatments are

unsuccessful, corticosteroid injections may be recommended. This form of Dr Christopher H. Singh treatment involves Chiropractor, runs Trans injecting powerful Canada Chiropractic at 230 anti-inflammatory Truck Stop in Woodstock, medications directly Ont. He can be reached into the knee joint. at 519-421-2024 E.mail: When all other form chris_singh@sympatico.ca of treatment fail, surgery may be the only option. Arthroscopic knee surgery involves a surgeon making small incisions in the joint and inserting a small camera to look inside the knee. Once there, the surgeon will clean the joint out by removing any loose particles and repairing the joint surfaces. This type of surgery is most often performed on younger patients in order to delay more invasive surgeries. If the degeneration of the knee is too severe for repair, joint replacement surgery is the only other option. This surgery may involve replacing one side or both sides of the joint. Artificial joints are most commonly made from metals or plastic. Currently, artificial knee joints are expected to last for approximately twenty years depending on how active the individual is. In general, the results of knee replacement surgery are very good. Until next time, drive safely! RT

Getting back to the conference, the PMTC Young Leaders Group (YLG) was also front and center at this year’s event, and started with their own YLG networking function. It was followed by a seminar on autonomous trucks which featured a panel hosted by Lou Smyrlis of Truck News. Following the seminar, the YLG provided its CITT bursaries to 2 well deserved recipients. “The PMTC Young Leaders Group is really building momentum and are poised to do great things in our industry. The networking, education and leadership skills that can be gained by being part of this group are invaluable” stated PMTC President Mike Millian. Get out. Get Involved. Get Inspired! Reach out to the PMTC office at info@pmtc.ca. We would love to see you come out and get involved with the PMTC, our Industry, and our future Young Leaders. RT
