W Brake Safety Week (September 6 – 12) is an annual outreach and enforcement campaign designed to improve commercial vehicle brake safety throughout North America.
Welcome to the August 2015 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the award-winning magazine for Canada’s multicultural trucking industry. Inside you will find the latest updates related to the trucking industry plus all regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, and much more. Congratulations to CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) for launching its Heads Up! campaign with the help of the Ministry of Transportation, Ontario Provincial Police, York Regional Police and the Toronto Police Service. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness and educate drivers about the new laws and regulations following the passing of the Making Ontario’s Roads Safer Act. Effective September 1st, the new rules will include higher fines and demerit points for distracted drivers, changes to the Slow Down, Move Over law to include tow trucks and requirements for drivers to keep a distance of one-metre when passing cyclists, where practicable. During the week of September 6-12, 2015, law enforcement agencies across North America will conduct brake system inspections on large trucks and buses to identify out-of-adjustment brakes and brake-system violations as part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Brake Safety Week. Properly functioning brake systems are crucial to safe commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operation. CMV brakes are designed to hold up under tough conditions, but they must be routinely inspected and maintained carefully and consistently so they operate and perform properly throughout the vehicle’s life. Brake Safety Week is an annual outreach and enforcement campaign designed to improve commercial vehicle brake safety throughout North America. The Fleet Safety Council’s 24th Annual Educational Conference will be held at the Centre for Health and Safety Innovation in Mississauga on October 2, 2015. This event brings together fleet safety professionals from the truck, bus, and courier industries as well as insurance and many other related businesses to discuss the latest in driver training, staff development, and risk management techniques. Heads Up! Campaign Increased safety for all road users the focus of CAA’s latest campaign
N
ew road rules are coming to the province of Ontario this fall. That’s the main reason for CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) to launch its Heads Up! campaign with the help of the Ministry of Transportation, Ontario Provincial Police, York Regional Police and the Toronto Police Service. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness and educate drivers about the new laws and regulations following the passing of the Making Ontario’s Roads Safer Act. Effective September 1st, the new rules will include higher fines and demerit points for distracted drivers, changes to the Slow Down, Move Over law to include tow trucks and requirements for drivers to keep a distance of one-metre when passing cyclists, where practicable. “As a tireless advocate for road users, CAA is pleased to see significant changes to address distracted driving, improve cycling in our province and provide enhanced safety measures for tow truck operators servicing motorists on Ontario’s roads. The Making Ontario’s Roads Safer Act benefits all road users by increasing safety measures regardless of your mode of transportation,” said Teresa Di Felice, Director of Government and Community Relations and
Driver Training, CAA SCO. “Ontario is a world leader in road safety and the new measures targeting distracted driving, cyclists and tow truck operator safety will help keep everyone on the road safe. How Ontario’s road rules are changing: • Under the new law, distracted driving penalties will increase to between $300 and $1,000, along with three demerit points if convicted. Novice drivers under the graduated licensing system will also face an immediate 30-day suspension on their first offence. • Ontario joins five Canadian provinces and nearly every state in the United States that require motorists to slow down, move over upon approaching tow trucks assisting other vehicles. • Changes to cycling legislation will see the fine for a “dooring” conviction increase to between $300 and $1,000, along with three demerit points. avistar has announced that it will be first-to-market with the Eaton Procision line of dual-clutch transmissions for its International DuraStar mediumduty trucks and IC Bus CE series school buses, available in late 2015. Based on Eaton’s testing, the new 7-speed transmissions deliver a significant fuel economy advantage compared to a similarly equipped vehicle with a torque converter automatic transmission. The Eaton Procision transmission features a dual-clutch design and electronic shifting that uses grade, vehicle weight and throttle input to provide optimal fuel efficiency and smooth, continuous delivery of torque. The Eaton Procision dual-clutch technology allows for more efficient acceleration from a stopped position and optimizes shift points that will efficiently get to the highest gear. Gear changes are made by swapping the engine torque between clutches with the next gear preselected. The dualclutch module is fully contained within the transmission,
hydraulically controlled and oil cooled for extended life. The Eaton Procision includes features such as Eaton Dynamic Shifting, which allows the transmission to automatically switch between economy and performance shift schedules based on mass, grade and driver demand. Available torque, engine acceleration and grade drive dynamically modified base shift results. Economy and performance shift tables can be adjusted to tune an overall calibration to meet any customer’s specific needs. Eaton Procision transmissions utilize a new synthetic transmission fluid that provides component protection while reducing maintenance costs, as part of 150,000 mile or 4-year lube and filter change intervals. The internal sump filter and electrical system do not require maintenance. Left Turns
L
ast month we discussed potential hazards when making right turns in a large commercial vehicle, so this month we’ll review techniques for left turns. There are several different ways to make a turn in a large vehicle and the method you use will depend on factors such as: • The traffic • Whether you are driving a straight truck or tractor-trailer • The size of the streets • Any obstacles nearby such as hydro poles, signs, light standards • A few examples of the different methods of turning use space in different parts of the road, including: • The intersection • The street that you are turning into • The street that you are turning from As you approach the intersection to make a turn, make sure that you assess the situation and determine which of these paths you need to take to make the turn safely. Just as with right turns, you must make sure you turn wide enough to keep your vehicle from cutting the corner. If you turn too soon, the left side of your vehicle may hit another vehicle in the intersection or run over a median because of off-tracking. Here are some other things to watch for when turning left: • Turn only when there is enough time for the rear of the vehicle to clear the intersection without forcing opposing drivers to slow down or swerve. • Assume that drivers coming from the other direction won’t see you. They may be not be paying full attention. • If there are two turning lanes, turn from the right-hand turn lane to allow for your vehicle’s off-tracking. • Remember - don’t expect other drivers to make room for you - always choose a lane that is safe and available to you! While 57% of consumers have an excellent credit score of 760+, 4% of consumershave the poorestcredit score of 300-559 .Canada has three credit reporting agencies, TransUnion Canadais a consumer only credit agency, Equifax Canada is a consumer and corporate credit agency andDun & Bradstreet Canada is a corporate only credit agency. The Beacon score is the consumer credit score at Equifax and FICO is consumercredit score at Transunion. score. The Equifax credit report includes Beacon and Bankruptcy Navigator Index 2.0 (BNI) scores. The three most important things in the Beacon scoring formula are; payment history, available credit and length of credit history. The BNI is a stress test on available credit, it shows the likelihood of becoming bankrupt over a 2 year period. A low BNI score means you are close to your available limits. Credit agencies may provide a credit rating from 1-9for various credit, R = revolving credit used with credit cards, I = loans with installment payments, M= Mortage and O= Operating for phone/internet bills. R1means you pay your bills within 30 days of the due date, R2 means that payment is made within 60 days and R9 means you don’t pay your bills.
2. Shop Around for Credit • It seems natural to shop around for the best deal - a word of caution,shopping aroundmay decrease your score. The credit industry views“credit seekers” negatively. Inquiries on your credit count towards your credit score and remain on your Equifax report for 3 years and on your Transunionreport for 6 years. Understand that lenders can see other lenders that looked at your account, and this may reduce your bargaining power.Ask the lender to hold off assessing your credit until you gather more information about their rates and payment structures. • Personal credit score information cannot be accessed without your consent. • According to Equifax, their scoring formula will not penalize you for shopping for mortgage rates or car loans as long as it is done within a two-week period. 3. Paying minimum balances • Making minimum payments on your credit card may not help your score. Credit cards charge high interest rates and are an expensive way to carry debt. To a creditor, the use of

credit cards as a line of credit or loan signals a potential issue. According to the Office of Consumer Affairs, even consumersthat use credit cards to their limit and paythem off are seen as higher risk. Equifax reports that 50% of consumer bankruptcies arise from consumers without prior bankruptcy offenses. The BNI 2.0 predicts potential for bankruptcy for individuals that may not have prior delinquent debt. When you pay off loans and credit cards the BNI is updated right away and will increase.
4. Avoid a Credit History • You may have a low score for two reasons, if you lack a record showing owing money and paying it back or if your credit is new. 5. Destroy Your Credit Life Line • When you run up your total credit limit, you are seen by creditors as a higher risk. A lender does not want to extend credit to someone highly leveraged or if they do, they will charge high rates. Low BNI scores indicate that you have a limited life line. • Equifax suggests that you use less than 35% of your available credit • Request a credit limit increase to get closer to 35% of your available credit. 6. Not taking charge of your Credit Score • Obtain a free credit report when you complete and mail an online form with Equifax or Transunion- fees may apply to obtain your credit score. • Credit agencies keep information on your credit report for at least 6 years. Over time with good financial habits, you can improve your credit score. • Errors and fraud may exist with your credit score. It is your right to dispute errors on your report. To address errors contact the lender, Equifax andTransunion and get the error fixed. RT

EMIL KOLB T PARKWAY GETS SET TO OPEN TO TRAFFIC
he Region of Peel will open the new Emil Kolb Parkway (Regional Road 150) to traffic onAugust 10. The 4.2 km road connects Hwy 50 north of Bolton to Coleraine Drive, to complete the bypass around the Bolton core, eliminating the need for through traffic to use Queen Street (Regional Road 50) while relieving traffic volumes through the downtown. Two new two-lane roundabouts at both ends of the Emil Kolb Parkway will also be open and functional. “The Emil Kolb Parkway is over 20 years in the making and extremely important to the residents and businesses in Bolton,” said Frank Dale, Peel Regional Chair. “The parkway will help address the future needs of the growing community, and will be a benefit to drivers and to those who choose to walk and cycle in this scenic landscape by using the new multi-use trail.” The two new roundabouts are the first two-lane roundabouts in Peel. They are located at the new King Street West alignment where Duffy’s Lane formerly intersected, and where the parkway connects at Highway 50 north of the Bolton core. People can visitpeelregion.ca/ roundabouts to learn how to drive through the roundabouts. A new multi-use trail offers multi-modal options to the community. The trail starts at King Street West/Coleraine Drive and leads to the old Humber River bridge converted exclusively for cycling and pedestrian use, and connects to the existing Humber Valley Heritage Trail. This trail provides safe travel, separated from traffic, and encourages positive lifestyle choices.

tone chips and glass repair are part of life as a vehicle owner. Windshields get chipped and cracked all the time. While stone chips are often inopportune, they cannot be neglected and should be attended to in short order. Even though they may seem minor, small stone chips can quickly develop into a costly repair job. Chips grow when pressure is placed on your windshield. Pressure can come from a variety of sources, even something as minor as taking your car though the car wash or when changes in temperature occur. And, once they grow into a crack, they can no longer be fixed and your windshield will need to be replaced. “Most insurance policies will cover the cost of stone chip repairs without impact to your policy rate,” says Wayne Ross, an insurance expert at Aviva Canada. “So people don’t need to be afraid to contact their insurance company about it.” Being proactive and repairing a chip in your windshield can save drivers a significant amount of money. A windshield replacement can cost anywhere from a couple hundred dollars, to $1,500 and therefore, fast action is crucial. A cracked windshield is also a
safety hazard. If the glass is cracked it could break and impact your ability to drive safely. What most people don’t realize is that the windshield is part of the structural framework of the vehicle. A cracked windshield has a greater chance of shattering or causing an accident. Goossens suggests taking the following steps if you notice a stone chip in your windshield: • Contact a reputable and licensed supplier for glass repair. Many have mobile services and they will come to you. • Talk to your insurance company and find out if the repair is covered. • Be aware of insurance fraud scams. Never give your insurance information to anything less than a reputable repair shop with a long standing presence. Temporary repair stations should be avoided. Annual Brake Safety Week is
September 6-12

uring the week of Sept. 6-12, 2015, law enforcement agencies across North America will conduct brake system inspections on large trucks and buses to identify out-of-adjustment brakes and brake-system violations as part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Brake Safety Week. Outreach and educational efforts by commercial motor vehicle (CMV) inspectors, participating motor carriers and others in the industry also take place during Brake Safety Week and are integral to the success of the campaign. Properly functioning brake systems are crucial to safe CMV operation. CMV brakes are designed to hold up under tough conditions, but they must be routinely inspected and maintained carefully and consistently so they operate and perform properly throughout the vehicle’s life. Brake Safety Week is an annual outreach and enforcement campaign designed to improve commercial vehicle brake safety throughout North America.

Brake inspections conducted during Brake Safety Week include inspection of brake-system components to identify loose or missing parts, air or hydraulic fluid leaks, worn linings, pads, drums or rotors, and other faulty brake-system components. Antilock braking system (ABS) malfunction indicator lamps also are checked. Inspectors will inspect brake components and measure pushrod stroke where applicable. Defective or out-of-adjustment brakes will result in the vehicle being placed out of service Additional inspections may include some Level I Inspections and, in the 10 jurisdictions currently using performance-based brake testing (PBBT) equipment, overall vehicle braking efficiency will be measured. These systems include a slow speed roller dynamometer that measures total vehicle weight and total brake force from which braking efficiency is determined. The minimum braking efficiency for trucks is 43.5 percent, required by U.S. federal regulation and the CVSA Out-of-Service Criteria. RT

Educating Yourself is the First Step to a Successful Career
W
hat are you doing to keep yourself educated? When I ask many people that question the answer is usually whenever the carrier decides to teach us a course or hold a safety meeting. For most carriers that probably means that you aren’t learning anything more than once per year. Many carriers find it hard to bring their employees in more than once a year for a safety meeting due to issues of customer deliveries and the challenges of running a trucking company. Many have gone to video training or some other form of self-directed training, but how much of that truly gets completed? Often the meeting is just reviewing items such as log books and defensive driving which is important, but not really teaching you anything new. The real trick to keeping yourself educated is to learn about you and adapt those skills to your career. If you only try to improve yourself through the company training program you will only learn so much. Now I am not knocking the company training but you will only learn the “how” of a topic and not necessarily the “why” of a topic. Oh sure they will tell you how important it is to drive defensively but that doesn’t mean you will. You may learn to fill out your log book properly but that won’t help you become more efficient. The reason for this is that the “why” comes from within us and that is usually not taught in the company training program. When you work on yourself then you will become a person who can now take the techniques taught on “how” to do something and apply them with your knowledge of why you should do something. Let’s take defensive driving. No matter how many times I tell you to drive safely if you don’t believe in driving safely you won’t. If I show you
why you should drive safely because you could hurt others, hurt yourself, get sued, end your career, may never get home to your family, then you have a reason to drive safely if those things are important to you. If you listen to many seminars the way I have you will start to see a common theme in keeping yourself educated. Many are talking about keeping up with industry news which I agree with as well, but should you stop there. The true answer is no and the reason for that is that our industry doesn’t stop there. There are so many elements to our industry that your education has to come from places both inside and outside of this industry. So where do you start? First start with you! Improve yourself all the time and strive to be that professional driver that you are or should be. Listen to tapes, videos, take classes and improve yourself so that you can improve your career through knowledge. Learn skills like good trip planning, organization, time management that will help increase your efficiency therefore making you more money throughout your career. Learn how to deal with people so that you can improve your customer service skills and how you deal with people. This will help you with your people skills and those skills will never go to waste. Languages are another area of improvement which can really pay off. If your English is not very strong work on improving in that area and you will find opportunities open up for you. If you already speak English well, then learning another language such as French or Spanish will also open many doors for you that will improve your career and life over time. If you are looking at places to learn those skills then books, tapes, videos, and podcasts are great places to start. A great podcast that can help in many of those areas and improve your career is The Lead Pedal Podcast.

he rash associated with poison ivy is due to an individual’s sensitivity to an oily resin called urushiol which is found on the leaves, roots and stems of the poison ivy plant. Not everyone who comes in contact with the plant will develop a rash. In fact, it is estimated that approximately 50 percent of people will experience a skin reaction to poison ivy. In most cases, the rash will develop between 12 to 48 hours after exposure to the plant and typically lasts a few weeks. The symptoms of the rash usually include redness, itching, swelling and eventually blisters on the skin. The severity of the rash depends on how much urushiol gets transferred to the skin. Urushiol is a very sticky substance which easily attaches itself to skin, clothing, tools or pets. Thus you can also come in contact with urushiol by touching a contaminated object. Garden tools and shoes are two very common things that transfer urushiol to human skin. It is also possible to irritate your respiratory system by inhaling the smoke from burning poison ivy plants. The good news is that a poison ivy rash is not contagious. It is a common misconception that the fluid in the blisters contains urushiol and therefore can spread the rash to other individuals. The reality is that you can not contact a poison ivy rash from another person unless you come in contact with the urushiol that is still on that person. Obviously, individuals with outdoor occupations such as farmers, landscapers,
Poison Ivy Rash foresters and construction workers are at higher risk for exposure to poison ivy. In most case, medical treatment is not necessary for a poison ivy rash. However, it is important to seek medical attention if the rash persists more than three weeks or you suspect that the skin has become infected. In severe cases, your doctor may prescribe oral corticosteroids to help with the skin inflammation. In general, the most annoying symptom associated with poison ivy rash is the severe itching. Over the counter corticosteroid creams and calamine lotion may help to
relieve this. Oral antihistamines such as Benadryl may also relieve some of the symptoms of a poison ivy rash. Some people find that soaking in a cool bath containing oatmeal-based products helps to ease the skin irritation. Although it is impossible to completely prevent contact with poison ivy, there are few prevention measures to keep in mind. Firstly, research and learn how to identify poison ivy plants. Also, when hiking or camping, try to stay on marked or clear paths. Try to prevent pets from running though wooded areas as they can very easily be contaminated themselves and in turn spread the urushiol to others. If you suspect that you have come in contact with poison ivy, gently wash your skin with soap within ten minutes of exposure. Oftentimes, this will significantly reduce the severity of the rash. However, after an hour or so, the urushiol will have penetrated the skin. In addition, protecting your skin by wearing long pants and shoes will significantly reduce your risk. Be sure to thoroughly wash your clothing in a washing machine using detergent if you think you may have come in contact with poison ivy. It is important to note that urushiol can remain potent for a few years. Thus, it can still cause a skin reaction years after the initial contamination if not removed at that time. As you can see, a poison ivy rash is not a serious medical condition. However, it can cause very uncomfortable symptoms. Keep in mind these simple tips and you will be well on you way to enjoying an itch-free summer. Until next month, drive RT safely!
