From the Editor’s Desk

T

International Roadcheck is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world, with nearly 17 trucks or buses inspected, on average, every minute in Canada, the United States and Mexico during a 72-hour period.

Thanks for your continued patronage to our award-winning magazine serving Canada’s multicultural transportation industry! Inside this edition, you will find the latest developments and updates related to the industry plus all the regular columns and features. Congratulations to Trucking HR Canada for hosting another successful Women with Drive Summit in Toronto focusing on strategies for recruiting, retaining and mentoring women in Canada’s trucking industry. As a national partnership-based organization, Trucking HR Canada does a commendable job in promoting the provision of safe, secure, efficient, and professional trucking services in Canada. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reporting that 2016 marked the fourth consecutive year that inattentive drivers were behind the highest number of lives lost on OPP-patrolled roads over the other main causal factors in road fatalities, known as the “Big Four” (distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving and failure to buckle up). We request our readers to conduct responsibly and take a firm stand against those who endanger their lives by using their cell phones or engaging in other forms of distractions behind the wheel. Keeping our roads, communities, and families safe starts and ends with each of us. Let us do our part in making safety a priority. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 30th annual International Roadcheck will take place June 6-8, 2017. Over a 72hour period, CVSA-certified commercial motor vehicle inspectors in jurisdictions throughout North America will conduct inspections of commercial motor vehicles and their drivers. This year’s focus is cargo securement. The campaign is a CVSA program with participation by the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada, and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (Mexico). Since its inception, more than 1.5 million roadside inspections have been conducted during the annual campaigns. The Smart Trucker seminar series presented by Road Today Media Group and Bruce Outridge Enterprises is aimed to help drivers and owner operators become successful at their positions and businesses. The 2017 series will kick off on April 11th in Mississauga where industry veteran and Ontario Road Knight Guy Broderick will be our keynote speaker. Attendance is free but seating is limited. Pre-registration is required and can be done at www.roadtoday. com/smarttrucker. The 9th Annual Road Today Show & Job Fair will be organized at the Soccer Centre in Brampton on Saturday, May 27th. Like previous years, there will be plenty of activities including trade show, job fair, kids & family entertainment and lots more. Entry and parking is always complimentary. Enjoy the spring weather! INDUSTRY INITIATIVE

Trucking HR Canada Hosts Successful Women with Drive Summit

Pictures by P3 Peter Power Photography

T

he third annual Women with Drive Summit from Trucking HR Canada was another huge success. The Toronto event held on March 2nd at the Sheraton Toronto Airport Hotel and Conference Centre featured human resources, marketing and operations professionals and focused on strategies for recruiting, retaining and mentoring women in Canada’s trucking industry. The event included industry experts across several panel discussions who discussed a wide range of issues on how the industry can attract, accommodate and empower more women. Not surprisingly, organizers and attendees agreed that the biggest barrier is still behind the wheel. Statistics Canada says just 3 percent of Canada’s drivers are women – a number that Trucking HR Canada and participants at Women With Drive would like to see increase. OTA VP of Communication Marco Beghetto led a two-hour ‘Global Perspectives’ discussion and Q&A featuring five very successful career women from Sweden (Elin Engstrom, test driver, Scania), Denmark (Vibeke Theisel, driver), the UK (Jenny Tipping, driver-trainer, Manpower Logistics), Australia (Heather Jones, CEO Pilbara Heavy Haulage Girls) and New Zealand (Meryn Morrison, health & compliance manager, Regal Haulage). Each of the panelists discussed their early struggles as women in trucking and how over time they excelled in the industry. They also offered diverse perspectives on how

8

to combat the driver shortage. The Women with Drive event also included an opening address by Stephania Varalli, co-owner and coCEO, Women of Influence organization and a highly entertaining and inspiring keynote luncheon Q&A with Mandy Rennehan, founder, Freshco.ca (a highly successful retail maintenance and construction company), among several other panel sessions. As a national partnership-based organization, Trucking HR Canada promotes the provision of safe, secure, efficient, and professional trucking services in Canada. Volvo Trucks Successfully Demonstrates On-Highway Truck Platooning in California

V

olvo Trucks and Partners for Advanced Transportation Technology (PATH) at the University of California, Berkeley recently completed a successful demonstration of partially automated truck platooning, made possible by Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control technology (CACC). Three Volvo VNL 670 model tractors hauled cargo containers at the Los Angeles Port complex and along Interstate 110, highlighting for public officials and other stakeholders the technology’s potential for improving highway safety, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and increasing the capacity of transportation systems. “Truck platooning can benefit freight companies and professional drivers alike through safer, more fuelefficient operations,” said Magnus Koeck, Volvo Trucks vice president of marketing and brand management. “Vehicle-to-vehicle communication is pivotal for platooning systems; it helps reduce the reaction time for braking and enables vehicles to follow closer. Reducing the traveling

10

April 2017

distance between vehicles not only reduces the aerodynamic drag, but also allows for greater highway utilization, thereby helping to alleviate traffic congestion.” In simulated “real world” conditions the three Volvo VNL tractors traveled at speeds of 55 miles per hour while keeping 50 feet apart, a closer distance than usual for on-highway tractors. Forward-looking sensors and vehicle-to-vehicle communication helped maintain speed and spacing without driver intervention. Staged and unplanned vehicle cut-ins demonstrated how the technology handles common traffic situations. CACC technology is an enhancement to the current Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) technology that enables closer and more accurate control of the gap between trucks with increased safety. The advanced technology, which makes platooning possible, is meant to serve as an aid, not a replacement for skilled professional truck drivers. Benefits of platooning through CACC include faster responses to hard braking

while maintaining safety, superior longitudinal control while following in a lane, reduced emissions, and improved traffic flow. The CACC technology being developed in conjunction with PATH has been sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation/ Federal Highway Administration Advanced Research Program and Caltrans. Other project partners include Cambridge Systematics, Inc., the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and Gateway Cities Council of Governments. Platooning presents the best nearterm opportunity for leveraging any level of autonomous technology for on-highway operations, where a skilled professional driver remains vitally important. Volvo has also demonstrated a fully autonomous truck working in a mining operation. Confined environments or jobs humans cannot perform remain the best and most feasible applications for fully autonomous vehicles. RT

INFRASTRUCTURE ACTION PLAN HIGHWAY CONGESTION

National Action Plan outlines the road ahead in fight against distracted driving

D

istracted driving deaths have surpassed impaired driving deaths according to the latest fatality data from several Canadian jurisdictions. Nationally, distraction accounted for an estimated 25 per cent of drivers killed in fatal crashes in 2013. This troubling trend has made distracted driving a top road safety priority for governments and organizations across the country. While a wide range of initiatives have been pursued by concerned stakeholders to tackle this pressing problem, there is an urgent need for a coordinated and comprehensive blueprint to effectively address it. To help fill this gap, the Canadian Coalition on Distracted Driving (CCDD) was formed to develop a National Action Plan, which was published today. The Plan contains 15 action items organized according to four priority areas: education and prevention, enforcement, data and research, and technology and industry. It was designed to inspire and engage agencies concerned about distracted driving and provide them with tools to help reverse this trend. In developing the plan, the CCDD explored the diverse topics that play a role in distracted driving, including: driver behaviour, penalties, enforcement, education campaigns, devices and in-vehicle technologies, emergency medical care, auto insurance, the transportation industry and automated vehicles. The components of the plan represent the most essential activities that can support the efforts of agencies with a vested interest in the issue, and help them meet their objectives more efficiently and effectively. CCDD will produce the series of tools contained in the Plan, and convene discussions in key sectors to help agencies amplify efforts to reduce distracted driving. An initiative of the Traffic Injury Research Foundation, Drop It And Drive and The Co-operators, the CCDD is the first coalition of its kind in Canada. The multi-

sectoral group includes members from various levels of government, enforcement, academia, health, industry and communities. Their expertise is varied, including road safety research, injury prevention and health care, policy, enforcement, education, as well as the insurance, automotive and trucking industries. RT

SUCCESS STORY

Encouraging Women to Enter the Canadian Trucking Industry

S

helley Uvanille-Hesch wants to see more women working in the trucking industry, but she knows it won’t happen without those who are already there lending a hand. That’s why in 2014 she founded the Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada, which recruits and mentors women in a profession that is overwhelmingly male. The group estimates that only 3 percent of Canadian truck drivers are women. The federation has about 50 members, including men, and a handful of corporate sponsors, including the Highway Western Star dealership in Ontario. The group includes professionals who hold nondriving jobs in the trucking industry, such as dispatchers, managers and parts technicians. “We really want to encourage more women into the industry. It’s a good job and there is a definite need for more truckers,” she said. “It’s a man’s world, but it’s coming around.” Uvanille-Hesch worked her way up to the cab of a big truck without the benefit of an organization like Women’s Trucking Federation. The daughter of a truck driver, she knew from a young age she wanted to drive as well: “I always had the bug, but I wanted to be home with my kids.” She compensated by driving a school bus; once her children were grown, she graduated to a motor coach, then a straight truck, and has been driving a Class 8 truck for 17 years. For the past 13 years, she’s driven for Sharp Transportation, a pharmaceuticals carrier based in Cambridge, Ont., that serves Canada and most of the United States. Her

14

April 2017

regular runs include Georgia, Florida, Texas and California. As a senior driver at Sharp, Uvanille-Hesch drives a 2016 Western Star 5700XE she’s named “Destiny Star.” “I love it. There is so much room and it’s a smooth ride,” she said. “I’m only 4’ 11”, but I can see over the hood and I can actually see out of the hood mirrors into my blind spots.” A solo driver for a long time, she now teams with her husband, Chris, who earned his CDL so he could join her on the road. She also praised Detroit™ Virtual Technician™, which comes standard on the 5700XE. The integrated remote diagnostic system records critical vehicle performance data immediately before, during and after

a fault occurs. Within minutes, Virtual Technician gives drivers and fleets a preliminary diagnosis, recommendations and, if needed, directions to nearby service locations with the available parts. She also likes the attention the Western Star attracts: “It doesn’t matter where we go, people are always taking pictures of my ride and asking questions about her, even when I’m fueling. Quite often, I pop the hood so they can look at the engine.” She’s put 191,000 miles on “Destiny Star” in her first year, and she appreciates it more than ever. “It’s my first Western Star, but I wouldn’t want to drive anything else,” she said. When her husband is behind the wheel, Uvanille-Hesch stays busy with the Women’s Trucking Federation, which is active on a number of fronts, from mentoring women in driving school and hosting career events at high schools to giving interviews to polish the public image of truckers. The federation also is involved in a number of charitable causes and appears at industry events to gain visibility and recruit women drivers. Shelley will also be a keynote speaker at the ‘Smart Trucker’ seminar being held on September 12th at the Casablanca Winery Inn located in Grimsby. Women truckers can do a lot to encourage newer drivers by mentoring them and becoming fleet and school trainers, she said: “They’ll get a wealth of knowledge from all angles.” RT

Mack Extends 6x2 Liftable Pusher Axle Benefits with Addition of Automatic Standby Option

M

ack Trucks has announced Automatic Standby Mode, a pioneering option for its 6x2 liftable pusher axle available on Mack Pinnacle highway models. The 6x2 with liftable pusher axle offers improved fuel efficiency and productivity benefits and is designed for applications that haul out heavy and return empty, such as bulk haul. The addition of Automatic Standby Mode eliminates the need for the driver to manually push buttons to initiate standby mode, simplifying operation. Mack has also added rear air disc brakes as an option to it 6X2 liftable pusher offer. When the ignition is off, Automatic Standby equalizes the suspension pressure, preventing the rear axle from being overloaded. The driver does not have to remember to initiate the standby mode and also does not need to remember the button sequence to put it in standby. The 6x2 with liftable pusher axle monitors trailer weight and adjusts the truck’s driveline configuration to boost fuel efficiency without impacting performance. The 6x2 with liftable pusher axle is capable of determining payload by using sensors in the rear suspension and either lifting or lowering the foremost rear axle. When an empty load is detected, the axle lifts, allowing the tractor to operate as a 4x2 for less drag, better fuel efficiency and reduced tire wear, which helps lower maintenance costs. For full loads, the same axle is lowered to provide additional stability and distribution of the trailer’s weight. To deliver optimal traction, the system’s suspension pressure and ride height are continuously monitored and adjusted to maintain a load bias toward the drive axle. In addition, three driver-selectable traction control modes are available via a dash-mounted switch. During normal operation, control of the lift axle is automatic based on payload. The system offers a manual control feature that enables a driver to raise or lower the suspension for easier landing gear RT retraction or trailer hook-up respectively. April 2017

EVENT UPDATE

2017 Mid-America Trucking Show

A

Ground Report by Robert Janzen

ttending a world renowned trucking industry trade show like the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) in Louisville, Kentucky was a real eye opener for a first time attendee like myself. Having attended many large expositions of this sort since early childhood, both here in Canada as well as the U.S., one mistakenly comes to the conclusion that this show will be big, but until you actually get there and start walking, it is impossible to even imagine the scope and range of participants in this 46th annual event. My father first attended this event in 2015 and marveled at the sheer size of the venue and the displays. He did not attend in 2016, since the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s) scaled back their involvement. We resolved that in 2017, we would go as a two person team of writer and photographer. Properly seeing and covering the show in one day is not possible. This year, Peterbilt, Kenworth and Mack were back with large displays, as well as Western Star with a smaller display than in 2015, but well represented nonetheless. Most of the OEM’s favour an odd year schedule for their participation, since the industry show in Hanover, Germany, is held on an even year schedule. Having something new and innovative to display every year does not happen in the heavy truck industry, making it difficult for the manufactures to see an economic justification for their participation. Volvo and Navistar (International

Trucks) were absent. Freightliner Team Run Smart represented the brand with a display. Ford showed their fleet of commercial vehicles and had a fun interactive contest for show attendees. All of the major trailer manufacturers had large displays, necessitated by the sheer size of the offerings on display. Hyundai Translead, Utility, Mac Trailers, Fruehauf and East Manufacturing were among the many trailer manufacturers on hand. Keith Manufacturing showed their innovative walking floor technology, used by many trailer manufacturers to make trailer loading and unloading faster, safer and more practical. Canada was well represented by Manac Trailers and Stargate Manufacturing with displays showing that trailers made in Canada do compete with the best offerings in the marketplace worldwide. Aftermarket and OEM suppliers such as Alcoa Wheels, Allison Transmissions, Bendix, Borg-Warner, Bosch, Cummins, Delco-Remy, Hendickson, Ridewell Suspensions and Wabco were some, but certainly not all players in that segment on display.

Quality tires are a major expense to the trucking industry given the crumbling infrastructure and road surfaces in North America, so the tire manufacturers had large displays highlighting their latest offerings. B.F. Goodrich, Continental, Cooper, Falken, Goodyear, Hankook, Kumho, Sumitomo, Uniroyal and many lesser known brands were represented. Tool and Repair Equipment Manufacturers were well represented. Gray Manufacturing, for example, had a very large display highlighting their equipment. The hand operated lifting tools and stands, hoists and portable heavy vehicle lifts on display showed that North American products built to a high standard are amongst the best in the world. Over eighty exhibitors represented this segment of the trucking industry. Safety equipment suppliers, parts suppliers, paint suppliers, lubricant, additive and sealant manufacturers, filter manufacturers, truck lighting manufacturers, truck stop operators, insurance companies specializing in providing transportation industry coverage, logistics firms, financial service providers, trucking industry recruiters and just about anything else related to the trucking industry is at MATS. There were a large number of truck tuning and customizing vendors. Shows of this nature constantly evolve and MATS is no different. In 2016, when the OEM’s did not attend due to the high cost of their involvement as well as the economic difficulties in the trucking industry, the show adapted. This year, most of the manufacturers returned, but there were, according to my father, many more restored trucks and vintage vehicles on display. These trucks were of real interest to show goers. There was even a 1975 Dodge with

175 miles on the odometer. It is now owned by the son of the dealer who originally sold the vehicle. The vehicle is exactly as it was manufactured with only the patina of 42 years of storage changing its original appearance. As a Mechanical Engineering Technologist who owns three class eight trucks and does all the repairs necessary to keep them running safely, I found that the representatives

of the companies with booths at the show could answer the very in depth questions I asked them. Simply put, they knew their stuff! Although the 1.2 million square foot show is an intimidating challenge to complete without a comfortable pair of shoes, my overall takeaway from this experience is that the show was much larger and better than I had envisioned. It was certainly worth

the nine hour driving time from the Toronto area. It is impossible to include all participants with booths and displays in this summary. Any omissions were due to space limitations for this article. If you are a person with any interest in the trucking industry, visiting this show at least once is an item that RT should be on your bucket list.

Western Star Announces Special Edition 50th Anniversary Graphics Package

W

estern Star Trucks has announced the availability of a special edition 50th anniversary graphics package. Western Star is continuing to pay tribute to its past while looking forward to its future by offering to customers a modern adaptation of

graphics packages commonly found on Western Star trucks in the late 1970s. The special edition 50th anniversary graphics package, aka “Wings of Awesomeness”, is available as a factory installed vinyl package or paint scheme. It can be ordered across the 5700XE, 4900,

4800 and 4700 product line-ups and works well with any color truck. The package can be ordered through the end of 2017. “We really wanted to offer our customers something awesome to celebrate and commemorate the 50th anniversary of Western Star trucks. After months of researching our archives and hundreds of amazing custom paint schemes from the 1970s and 1980s, we finally settled on the ‘wings’ scheme which debuted on show trucks displayed at the 1979 Anaheim Truck Show” said Andy Johnson, Brand Manager, Western Star Trucks. “They still look badass and we thought it would be a fun way to give tribute to the past if we offered a modern adaptation for the year.” The silver and gold “Wings of Awesomeness” package is available in either high-quality vinyl or factory paint and are available for order now. Customers interested in this option are asked to contact their nearest dealer. RT

S

ocial media connects us, it keeps us up to date, and makes us feel involved with family and friends. It helps us market our businesses and creates a platform for free speech. Social media is everywhere. We can all agree that social media is part of our lives and probably here to stay. We can also agree that anything put on the web is out there for all to see, even if the post is removed afterwards. Once it’s shared, it’s shared! Winter is notorious for vehicle accidents and many are out of control of the people involved. Many lose their lives and that of loved ones in these fiery crashes. The news is full of people getting stuck in snow storms, involved in pile ups and much more. Often these incidents require professional investigations to determine the outcome and find the cause of the accident. This is the problem, PROFESSIONAL INVESTIGATION IS REQUIRED! Much of what is on social media is not professional investigation, it’s opinion.

Recently there was a story shared on a popular social media platform. A truck had rolled over in the ditch, blocking the road, and motorists were stuck for hours. The story had been shared on my platform stream by someone not even involved in the trucking industry, they were friends from outside of trucking. I recognized the company that had been involved and in a future meeting a month later asked my contact if the driver was okay? He told me the driver was fine and had done everything in his power to avoid damaging other vehicles. The first question that came to mind was. ‘How fast was the driver going to roll the truck in the ditch?” My contact then began to share with me what really happened. My friend said that the driver was barely moving. He had started stopping for a stop sign ahead and found his vehicle on black ice. He was able to gear down and come almost to a stop, however his rig began to slide on its own on the roadway. In order to avoid going into the intersection he tried to

All he shared was the picture, but the post went viral. This is sad because the company name was in full view in the shot and clear in the pictures. Even those of us that know the expertise of drivers can let our minds think something different when viewing social media. The same thing can be said for those that get upset at a shipper or receiver and then post comments on social media. Today many young people feel that posting on social media is the same as telling a friend about a situation while standing in line at a coffee shop. The problem is that other people can also see that post and many times your customers may be following the company on social media. You may be jeopardizing your job or your company by posting information or messages that can be viewed by others that work with the party in question. Keep your comments off social media and any incidents shouldn’t be posted on social media until they have been fully investigated and explained. You may be ending your career early due to wrong information. April 2017

SAFETY 4 U

5 ways to prevent

motorcycle theft O wning a motorcycle and taking it for a spin out on the open road can be an exciting experience. But don’t forget to take the necessary precautions to protect your investment, as there’s no shortage of thieves looking for an easy bike to steal. “The design and structure of motorcycles makes them a natural target for thieves. They’re fairly easy to steal,” says Glenn Cooper of Aviva Insurance. While you may not be able to eliminate the risk entirely, all theft deterrents have three things in common: they buy time; they make the theft more difficult; and they reduce the odds of your motorcycle being stolen. Cooper suggests the following five strategies: 1. Use the steering lock. Most bikes come with a steering lock, which will make it more difficult for thieves to move your bike from the parked position. 2. Use alarms and GPS. Many of the more expensive bikes on the

road come with factoryinstalled alarms, but there are aftermarket systems and covert GPS trackers available as well. 3. Park it wisely. When travelling, many hotels will allow you to park in areas visible to the front desk; all you need to do is ask. If possible, ask for a first-floor room facing the parking area. If not, look for well-lit high-traffic areas around the hotel. 4. Extra locks. Disc alarms, cables and chain link cuffs are affordable options if you plan to chain your bike to a solid structure. An added lock or barrier gives thieves less incentive to steal. 5. Pair up. If there are no fixed objects nearby and you’re out riding with a buddy, park your two bikes nose to nose and secure them to each other with a lock. Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

HELP SAVE LIVES. MOVE OVER.

GREENER COMMUTE

5 tips to make your commute a greener one

E

nvironmental awareness in our driving not only helps the health of our planet, but also the health of our wallets. “Canadians are becoming more environmentally conscious, and an easy way to lower our eco-footprint is by maintaining our vehicles,” explains Darryl Croft, OK Tire automotive expert. “Also, keeping a few simple green driving tips in mind can help reduce your fuel consumption”. 1. Travel light. Roof racks, excessive cargo and heavy vehicles all add to fuel consumption, which in turn contributes to air pollution. A good rule of thumb for reducing your weight on the road is if you don’t need it, don’t bring it. Roof racks also increase wind resistance, making your vehicle

work harder to maintain speed. 2. Keep your vehicle maintained. Ensuring that your vehicle is in peak condition and functioning at its most efficient will help keep your carbon footprint down. Have the basic maintenance items checked and tuned up as needed on a regular basis. This includes tire pressure, fluid levels, battery, air filters, brake pads and spark plugs. 3. Avoid idling or revving to save fuel. When you are stopped, switch off your engine. Revving is an equally environmentally toxic habit as it uses unnecessary fuel. Driving at a safe, moderate speed is the best way to save fuel. 4. Check your tires

regularly. Once every week or two, check that your tires are sufficiently inflated. Under-inflated tires wear faster, creating drag and greater fuel consumption. Alignment is important as this can also create a drag on your vehicle. This should be checked by a certified automotive technician at least once a year, every time new tires are installed, or if you feel your vehicle is pulling to the side. 5. Buy eco-friendly tires. An energy-efficient tire is designed to maximize gas mileage by low rolling resistance, returning energy back to the tire and reducing heat generation. Eco-friendly tread compounds also reduce particle emissions. Find more information at www.oktire. RT com (NC)

Rotator Cuff Injuries

B

y far the most common shoulder complaint that I see in my clinic among professional truck drivers are injuries to the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is essentially a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint. It functions to stabilize the joint by keeping it firmly with in the socket during shoulder movement. Rotator cuff injuries or tears may occur from a single injury or due to repetitive strain. Occupations and sports which require a lot of overhead movements are more likely to injure the rotator cuff. Jobs such as painters, electricians and carpenters are at higher risk for rotator cuff injuries In my clinic I often treat rotator cuff injuries in flat bedders due to the physical demands of the job. Trapping and securing loads are usually the cause of the injury. In addition, rotator cuff injuries can occur due to slips and falls. Just last week I treated a driver that slipped and fell of the deck of his trailer and tore one of the muscles of his rotator cuff. Repetitive strain injuries to the rotator cuff are also common. Occupations which require repetitive movements such as factory workers are at higher risk. Along the same lines, sports such as tennis and baseball may also increase your risk. All of these activities lead to the progressive degeneration of the rotator cuff structure. The signs and symptoms of a

rotator cuff injury vary from person to person. However, most people will experience a dull ache deep with in the shoulder. The pain associated with the injury can also be very sharp and intense if there is a significant tear. Another common symptom is worsening shoulder pain when sleeping on the injured shoulder. Many patients have difficulty sleeping due to shoulder pain. In more severe rotator cuff injuries, muscle weakness and decreased ability to move the shoulder will be experienced. It is recommended that you seek medical attention if you experience shoulder pain that lasts more than a few weeks or you lose the ability to move your shoulder in certain ranges of motion. Your doctor will be able to diagnose a rotator cuff injury by taking a detailed medical history and performing a physical examination of the injured shoulder. If necessary, your doctor will recommend sophisticated imaging tests such as ultrasound, x-ray and MRI to better visualize the injury site. Depending on the location and severity of the injury, your doctor will recommend the best form of treatment for you. Conservative treatment such as rest, ice and anti-inflammatory medications are usually the first course of treatment. Mild rotator cuff injuries tend to respond well to this type of treatment. If conservative treatments are not successful, steroid injections such as cortisone may be recommended to further reduce pain and inflammation. Physical therapy may also be recommended to help

restore strength and flexibility to the injured shoulder. If all other forms of treatment fail, surgery may be necessary. Currently, there are several different options available for rotator cuff injuries which include arthroscopic tendon repair and Dr Christopher H. Singh open tendon repair. Chiropractor, runs Trans Again, depending Canada Chiropractic at 230 on the nature of the Truck Stop in Woodstock, injury, your surgeon Ont. He can be reached will be able to advise at 519-421-2024 E.mail: you as to what the chris_singh@sympatico.ca best options for surgery are for you As I always say, prevention is the best treatment. For my patients that drive flat bed, I always recommend that they do a light warm up before they load or unload. To do this, simply walk around your truck a few times to increase blood flow and then do some simple shoulder and arm stretches. The worst thing you can do after driving for several hours is to jump out of your cab and begin to do physical work. The reason for this is that muscles that have been stationary for an extended period of time will tend to be more tight and less pliable which in turn increases the chance of rotator cuff injury. Another good tip is to take breaks while working. This will give your muscles a chance to recover and reduce repetitive strain. Keep these simple tips in mind and you will be well on your way to pain free shoulders. Until next month, drive safely. RT

ROAD SAFETY

Driver Distraction Leads Road Deaths For Fourth Consecutive Year T he Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reporting that 2016 marked the fourth consecutive year that inattentive drivers were behind the highest number of lives lost on OPP-patrolled roads over the other main causal factors in road fatalities, known as the “Big Four”. In total, 65 people died in OPP-investigated collisions last year in which an inattentive driver was either a contributing factor or the primary cause of the death. In comparison to the other Big Four categories, 2016 ended with 55 speed-related, 53 seatbelt-related and 45 alcohol-related deaths. It was a busy March Break for the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) as officers laid more than 2,400 distraction-related charges during their annual Distracted Driving Campaign held from March 13-19 this year. The OPP reminds road users that while the campaign is over, officers are committed to distracted driving law enforcement and education year-round. They are again calling on passengers one of their most influential road safety partners - to help save lives by showing zero tolerance toward drivers who text, talk on their cell phones, or engage in other distractions that endanger their lives and those with whom they share the road.

QUICK FACTS
