From the Editor’s Desk

T

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 29th annual International Roadcheck will take place June 7-9, 2016. The 72-hour blitz will see nearly 10,000 CVSA-certified inspectors across North America perform truck and bus inspections.

Thanks for your continued patronage to our award-winning magazine serving Canada’s multicultural trucking industry since 2004! Inside the April 2016 edition, you will find the latest developments and event updates related to the trucking industry plus all the regular columns and features. The Smart Trucker seminar series presented by Road Today Media Group and Outridge Enterprises was kicked off successfully on March 5th. These seminars offer winning strategies on leadership, business, time management, customer service, profit centres, latest trends and safety updates to trucking professionals. Our next two sessions will be presented at Hamilton - Niagara (June 14th) and London, Ontario (July 19th) for which registration can be made conveniently at roadtoday.com/smarttrucker. We thank all industry sponsors and participants for supporting this educational initiative. Government of Ontario is making progress to expand Highway 427, which will create jobs and support economic growth and development. The proposed expansion of the new transportation route will greatly improve the flow of goods and services, manage congestion and provide a new connection for citizens and businesses. We welcome the steps taken towards creating efficient transportation system to meet growing needs of the communities. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has announced the expansion of Collision Reporting Centres (CRC) operating in the Greater Toronto Area to provide a safer, quicker and more convenient way for drivers to report property damage (PD) collisions. Drivers involved in PD collisions can clear their vehicles, if driveable, to a safe location off the highway, which reduces the risk of a secondary collision involving approaching vehicles. This also helps reduce congestion that often results from these vehicles remaining on the roadside. Congratulations to the Truck Training Schools Association of Ontario (TTSAO) Conference Committee for putting together a very successful event in February. It was a pleasure to be invited for one of the panel discussions in the first-ever conference which on the whole was well attended and very informative. Truck World – Canada’s national truck show is coming up from April 14 to 16 at the International Centre in Mississauga. Do stop by for a quick chat at our booth # 5648 as we unveil some exciting plans for the trucking industry. And don’t forget to plan a memorable weekend at our own 8th Annual Road Today Show & Job Fair which will be organized at the Soccer Centre in Brampton on Saturday, May 28th. Like previous years, there will be plenty of activities including trade show, job fair, kids & family entertainment, road safety awareness and lots more. Pre-register online at www.roadtodaytruckshow.com for a quick access as well as a chance to win fabulous prizes. Enjoy the spring weather! Always remember; road safety starts with you! ENFORCEMENT

CVSA Sets International Roadcheck 2016 Dates for June 7-9

T

he Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 29th annual International Roadcheck will take place June 7-9, 2016.The 72-hour blitz will see nearly 10,000 CVSA-certified local, state, provincial and federal inspectors in jurisdictions across North America perform truck and bus inspections. It is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world, with nearly 17 trucks or buses inspected, on average, every minute in Canada, the United States and Mexico during a 72-hour period. During the annual threeday event, CVSA-certified inspectors conduct compliance, enforcement and educational initiatives targeted at various elements of motor carrier, vehicle, driver, and cargo safety and security. During International Roadcheck, inspectors primarily conducted the North American Standard Level I Inspection, which is the most

thorough roadside inspection. It is a 37-step procedure that includes an examination of both the driver and vehicle. Drivers are required to provide items such as their license, endorsements, medical card and hoursof-service documentation, and are checked for seat belt usage and the use of alcohol and/or drugs. The vehicle inspection includes checking items such as the braking system, coupling devices, exhaust system, frame, fuel system, lights, safe loading, steering mechanism, drive line, suspension, tires, van and open-top trailer bodies, wheels and rims, windshield wipers, and emergency exits on buses.

The event is a program of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance with participation by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (Mexico). Since its inception in 1988, roadside inspections conducted during International Roadcheck have numbered more than 1.4 million. It also provides an opportunity to educate industry and the general public about the importance of safe commercial motor vehicle operations and the North American RT roadside inspection program.

Ontario Moving Forward

On Highway 427 Expansion

Map Image: www.427extension.ca

O

ntario is making progress to expand Highway 427, which will create jobs and support economic growth and development. The province has released a request for proposals to three shortlisted bidders to extend Highway 427 by 6.6 kilometres (km) from Highway 7 to Major Mackenzie Drive. The highway will also be widened for about 4 km south of Albion Road to Highway 7. Construction is expected to begin in 2017 and the road will be open to traffic in 2020. High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lane infrastructure will be included in the construction work. A 15.5 km stretch of dedicated HOT lanes with electronic tolling in both directions on Highway 427, from south of Highway 409 to north of Rutherford Road, will open in 2021. Expanding Highway 427 is part of the largest infrastructure investment in Ontario’s history — about $160 billion over 12 years, which is supporting 110,000 jobs every year across the province, with projects such as roads, bridges, transit systems, schools and hospitals. In 2015, the province announced support for more than 325 projects that will keep people and goods moving, connect communities and improve quality of life. RT

SAVINGS

Count to five for fuel-efficient driving F uel-efficient driving can not only save you hundreds of dollars in fuel each year, but it can also improve road safety, prevent unnecessary wear on your vehicle and lower harmful greenhouse gas emissions. You can count on one hand the number of steps it takes to achieve your vehicle’s fuel consumption ratings and save money at the pump. 1. Accelerate gently. Did you know about half the fuel you consume is used just to accelerate your vehicle? You can conserve up to 15 per cent of fuel by accelerating gently and gradually. To maximize your fuel efficiency, take about five seconds to accelerate from zero to 20 km/h. 2. Maintain a steady speed. Varying your speed up and down between 75 km/h and 85 km/h every 18 seconds can increase your fuel use by 20 per cent. On level roads and when safe to do so, consider using cruise control. On hilly terrain and where traffic permits, you’ll consume less fuel by allowing your speed to drop when you travel uphill and building momentum when driving downhill. 3. Anticipate traffic. Read the road ahead, anticipate road disruptions, monitor pedestrians and other vehicles and maintain a comfortable distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. 4. Avoid high speeds. Most cars, vans, SUVs and pickup trucks perform most fuel efficiently when travelling between 50 and 80 km/h. Above this speed, vehicles consume increasingly more fuel the faster they go.

14

April 2016

5. Coast to decelerate. By anticipating traffic slowdowns as early as possible, you can lower your speed, save fuel and money by simply taking your foot off the accelerator. Today, most vehicles have fuelinjection systems that automatically shut off the flow of fuel to the engine when the accelerator is fully released. In other words, a decelerating vehicle is coasting without using any fuel. When the engine speed drops to idle, the injection system restarts the flow of fuel to prevent the engine from stalling. These five steps were created by the Office of Energy Efficient for Vehicles at Natural Resources Canada. Each of the steps is explained in more detail at www. RT vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca. (NC)

Rain, Fog and Skids

W

hile warmer weather may be melting the snow and ice, spring rain and fog conditions still require care when you drive. Here are some tips on how to do adjust your driving for wet or foggy conditions. Rain • Put your headlights on if your wipers are on • Reduce your speed by at least one-third to avoid hydroplaning. • Be careful of puddles (they can hide large potholes that may damage your vehicle) • Try not to drive on flooded roads, which can adversely affect your brakes Fog • Before entering fog, check your mirrors for vehicles behind you and slow down - only if it’s safe • Turn on all your lights - use low beam headlights Skids When driving on wet, slippery roads, you are also at risk of skidding. A skid is the loss of tire traction and if you can’t stop your vehicle from skidding, it could turn into a jackknife. The most common causes of skids include: • Over-braking - when you hit the brakes too hard for the road conditions or have brakes that are out of adjustment. If your traction is poor, inertia may carry you forward into a skid. • Over-steering - when you turn the steering wheel too sharply for the road conditions. Centrifugal force and inertia act on your vehicle as you turn and push your vehicle away from the path of the curve. If your traction is poor, this can cause a jackknife. • Over-accelerating - accelerating too quickly for the road conditions or downshifting from (overly) high RPM’s. At this point, you may lose traction and inertia can cause a skid. Be careful to avoid these actions if at all possible. If you do find yourself in a skid, do the following: 1. Get off the throttle (or the brake) and push the clutch in. 2. Keep your eyes on a spot ahead of you and steer towards it. 3. Don’t look at the wheel or anything except for that focal point ahead of you.

Unveils Innovative New Engines for Increased Fuel Efficiency V

olvo Trucks North America has introduced its model year 2017 Volvo engines, delivering increased power, performance and fuel efficiency to benefit customers. Volvo incorporated multiple engine improvements to extend fuel efficiency benefits, including enhancements to the Volvo D11 and D13 engines, as well as the development of the Volvo D13 with turbo compounding. As a result of the improvements, Volvo is delivering between 2.2 to 6.5 percent better fuel efficiency with the 2017 engines compared with previous generation power. “Volvo’s 2017 lineup of engines is the most fuelefficient we’ve ever offered in North America,” said Göran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “Volvo engineered multiple engine enhancements to provide

customers with the needed fuel savings without sacrificing power and performance.” The Volvo D13 with turbo compounding was designed for customers in long-haul applications. Turbo compounding is a technology that recovers wasted exhaust heat and converts it to useable mechanical energy in the form of 50 additional horsepower that is transferred back into the engine. This results in up to a 6.5 percent improvement in fuel efficiency compared with previous engine models. The D13 with turbo compounding can also be spec’d with Volvo’s XE – eXceptional Efficiency – powertrain packages or in super direct drive. Through downspeeding, XE allows the engine to cruise at up to 300 rpm less than the average truck sold today – significantly improving fuel efficiency. The D13 with turbo compounding is available on an XE driveline with a 2.47 rear axle ratio. In addition to the new D13 with turbo compounding, Volvo also updated its 11-liter D11 and standard 13-liter D13, already two of the industry’s most fuel-efficient engines. Designed to be even more reliable, the engines feature a proven common-rail fuel system for reduced engine and cab noise, providing drivers a more comfortable ride. The common-rail fuel system also contributes to fuel efficiency improvements through finer control of the fuel injection, allowing for quicker, more accurate injection and a more efficient way to control fuel pressure. An updated EGR flow sensor has a new doublewall casing that reduces condensation and soot buildup in cold weather, preventing downtime. A

Volvo D13 with turbo compounding

low-pressure fuel system features an improved aftertreatment dosing module that is integrated into the fuel filter housing for easier serviceability. Upgrades to the two-speed coolant pump for both engines also improve fuel efficiency as a result of reduced parasitic losses. The new intake throttle enables a faster warmup when the engine is started. The 2017 Volvo D11 offers up to 425 horsepower and 1,550 lb.-ft. of torque, an increase of 20 horsepower. The engine also delivers up to a 2.2 percent fuel efficiency improvement compared with the previous D11 engine. With the right blend of power and a lighter weight, the D11 is ideal for regional, less than truckload (LTL) and pickup-anddelivery applications. The D11 is available in Volvo VN daycabs, VNM 430 and VNL 430 sleeper models, VAH and VHD models. The 2017 Volvo D13 features a new wave piston, which increases the compression ratio and maximizes fuel efficiency. Improved flame propagation reduces soot, while also increasing cylinder efficiency. The updated D13, available in the Volvo VN, VHD and VAH models, offers a fuel efficiency improvement of up to 2.5 percent compared to the previous D13. These engine enhancements were also included in the 2017 Volvo D13 with turbo compounding. The 16-liter Volvo D16, the largest engine in its class, offers power and reliability for hauling heavy loads, with horsepower ranging from 500 to 600, with 1,650 lb.-ft. to 2,050 lb.-ft. of torque. Available in the VNL and VNX models, the D16 is the perfect choice for line-haul and heavy-haul operations. RT April 2016

MTO launches pilot program to test three-wheel vehicles

O

n March 1st, 2016, Ontario introduced a new 10-year pilot program to allow three-wheeled vehicles on Ontario roads. Three-wheeled vehicles are a distinct class of vehicle separate from passenger vehicles, motor tricycles and motorcycles. The pilot is intended to: • assess the ability of three-wheeled vehicles to safely integrate with other vehicle types • determine whether existing rules of the road are adequate • consider alternative operating and licensing requirements The pilot brings the province in line with other Canadian jurisdictions - Québec, British Columbia, Manitoba and the Yukon - which already permit three-wheeled vehicles on their roads. It also supports innovation in the auto manufacturing sector and gives consumers more choice in how they travel. Only federally approved, three-wheeled vehicles designed for

REPORTING COLLISIONS

OPP announces expansion of Collision Reporting Centres

E

ight Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)-staffed Collision Reporting Centres (CRC) are now operating in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) to provide a safer, quicker and more convenient way for drivers to report property damage (PD) collisions. A PD collision is one in which no injuries are sustained to any of the parties involved and no significant damage to any of the vehicles. Reporting minor collisions of this nature to a CRC eliminates the need to call 911 and have a police officer attend. Drivers involved in PD collisions can clear their vehicles, if driveable, to a safe location off the highway, which reduces the risk of a secondary collision involving approaching vehicles. Another significant benefit to road users is that rapid clearance of the vehicles away from traffic helps reduce congestion that often results from these vehicles remaining on the roadside. This can be especially helpful in the GTA which has some of the

busiest highways in North America. Reporting PD collisions to a CRC means that drivers no longer have to face potentially long wait times for police, who often have to make their way through heavy GTA traffic to get to the scene. Once drivers clear their vehicles off the highway, they must exchange licence and insurance information in a safe location. If drivers estimate that the total combined damage to the vehicles exceeds $2,000, they are required to report the collision to a CRC within 48 hours. By calling 1-888-3101122, drivers will be provided with detailed information on what they need to do and where they can go to report the collision. The OPP CRCs are located in Aurora, Milton, Burlington, Whitby, Port Credit (Mississauga) and Barrie. The other two CRCs in Toronto are privatelyRT managed but also OPP-staffed.

Adds Knowledge To Your Toolbox

was talking to a carrier recruiter at a convention not too long ago and they were telling me that many of the new drivers coming into the industry have a lack of knowledge as to how the industry works and where the profit centres are in the industry. As we get more people coming into the industry from other careers, the understanding of the basics of transportation is missing for the most part. These days, drivers in the transportation industry have to do much more than shift gears. You have to be organized, informed, smart thinking and open minded to be successful. Those traits don’t come easy and are ongoing items to develop for any driver to be successful. Just like a mechanic must continue to add tools to their toolbox, drivers are the same. Would you have your vehicle fixed at a garage where the mechanic only had one wrench in their toolbox? If you have ever tried to repair something yourself with the wrong tool you know the frustration that follows and like most, you end up heading to your local hardware store to purchase the required tool. This is the reason that mechanics keep adding to their toolbox as technology and parts change and the same reason drivers need to keep doing the same for their knowledge toolbox. The problem is how do you do that as a driver? If you have ever been to a safety meetings at a carrier you will know that they often are reactive in nature or meant to meet compliance demands. Many also turn into complaint sessions about company rules or customers and the positive information flow is often lost. So, new information about how to run profitably or how to manage expenses won’t get covered at your company meeting. The problem is that

those issues are paramount to a successful trucking career. Drivers need that information! Smart drivers will be looking to find that information and that is where the Smart Trucker Seminar Series comes into play. With the launch of the first seminar on March 5th, drivers and industry professionals now have a place to find that information. The seminars focused on the profit side of the industry and important topics like cost management for owner operators, choosing runs that are profitable, and how to be at the top of your game as a professional driver. This information isn’t just informative for drivers, but the first seminar was attended by dispatchers, company executives, and other positions required for a successful carrier. New students rounded out the seminar so there was a good mix of young, old, new, and experienced industry segments who all found the information relevant and informative. If you missed the first seminar and want to attend future seminars to improve your career you still have a chance. The seminar series will roam throughout Ontario hopefully coming to a city near you. The next seminar is in June in the Hamilton area, July in the London area, Kingston area in September, and East GTA in November. Earlier dates promoted may be changing based on feedback from attendees and the producers are tweaking the series to make it of top value. If you would like to learn more about the series then visit roadtoday.com/smarttrucker and you can register and find information on future seminars. Keep adding to your knowledge toolbox, it is the best thing you RT can do for a successful career in transportation.

Redesigned EnerGuide Label for Vehicles provides improved information for Canadians

T

he EnerGuide Label has long been a trusted source for Canadians to compare the fuel consumption ratings of new vehicles on the market. The EnerGuide Label for Vehicles is affixed to all new light-duty vehicles available for retail sale in Canada, including passenger cars, vans, pickup trucks and SUVs. The label provides model-specific fuel consumption information for the vehicle to which it is affixed. Use the EnerGuide label to compare new vehicle fuel consumption information and identify the most fuelefficient new vehicle that meets your everyday needs. Beginning with 2016 model year vehicles, a redesigned EnerGuide label will be affixed to new light-duty vehicles, providing more comprehensive fuel consumption and environmental information. Below is a sample label for a gasoline vehicle – slightly different labels will appear on vehicles that use different types of fuels. New EnerGuide label for model year 2016 Manufacturers are now using an improved testing procedure, introduced for model year 2015, to determine the fuel consumption ratings of new light-duty vehicles. The Government of Canada-approved 5-cycle testing better approximates typical driving conditions and styles, resulting in fuel consumption ratings that are more representative of a vehicle’s on-road fuel consumption. The new tests measure city and highway consumption plus cold temperature operation, air conditioner usage and driving at higher speeds with more rapid acceleration and braking. The EnerGuide label is affixed to the vehicle alone or as

part of the vehicle options and price label. If a new vehicle has no label, ask the dealer for the manufacturer’s fuel consumption information for the vehicle. The results appearing on 2016 model year vehicles, providing drivers with more wide-ranging fuel consumption and environmental information. What to look for: 1. Vehicle technology and fuel - text and related icon identifying the type of fuel used by the vehicle 2. Fuel consumption - a prominent combined fuel consumption rating and separate city and highway fuel consumption ratings in litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km). The combined rating reflects 55 percent city and 45 percent highway driving. 3. Fuel economy - the combined rating expressed in miles per imperial gallon (mi/gal) 4. Annual fuel cost - an estimate based on the combined fuel consumption rating, 20,000 km driven and the fuel price indicated 5. Vehicle class range - the best and worst combined fuel consumption ratings of vehicles in the same class 6. CO2 and smog ratings - the vehicle’s tailpipe emissions of CO2 and smog-forming pollutants rated on a scale from 1 (worst) to 10 (best). The CO2 emissions, in grams per kilometre driven, are shown on the CO2 bar 7. 10 fast facts about Conventional and Battery-Electric Vehicles 1. Battery-Electric Vehicles, or BEVs, use only electricity to provide motive power to the vehicle. 2. There are three main components to a BEV – an electric motor (or motors), a battery pack and a transmission that transfers power from the electric motor(s) to the wheels. 3. Electric drives are significantly more efficient than combustion engines and drivetrains because electricity is converted to mechanical motion much more efficiently. 4. Internal combustion engines loose significant energy in the combustion process as waste heat lost through the cooling system and exhaust. 5. Electric motors deliver almost instant torque from the second you put your foot on the accelerator to speed up the vehicle, without the additional requirements of a conventional transmission. 6. While driving a BEV, you’re depleting electricity supplied from the onboard battery which impacts its driving range. Indicators on the dashboard provide accurate feedback as to how much reserve power you have, how far you can continue to drive on the remaining electrical charge in the battery, and when you will need

to charge the battery. 7. The batteries in a BEV are charged from an external electricity source, by either plugging in at home, at work, or at a public charging station. 8. BEVs offer about 100 kilometres of driving range before they need to be recharged. Vehicle speed and acceleration, driving style, vehicle load, road and traffic conditions, weather and accessory use (heater and a/c) can all affect the vehicle’s driving range. You can expect to save about 80% in energy costs using electricity compared to using gasoline in a conventional vehicle. 9. BEVs are quiet, use low-drag aerodynamics and other technology and material innovations to improve fuel efficiency, reduce energy costs and provide zero tailpipe emissions. 10. BEVs are relatively new to Canada and represent the most energy-efficient vehicle choices. Automakers are making more model choices available each year in response to more stringent vehicle fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions regulations. LEAVE A LANE. IT ' S THE LAW.

Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

Varicose Veins

F

or most individuals, varicose veins are simply a nuisance or cosmetic problem. However, in more severe cases, varicose veins can cause significant pain and discomfort and may lead to more serious health issues. Unlike arteries, veins transport deoxygenated blood from the rest of the body back to the heart. Although any vein in the body may become varicose, the veins in the lower limb are far more susceptible. This is due to the fact that veins in the leg must work against the force of gravity in order to return the blood to the heart. Therefore, the pressure in the veins of the lower limbs is elevated when compared to the rest of the body. Tiny one way valves are located in the veins of the body. Healthy valves only let the blood flow towards the heart but prevent back flow. Muscle contraction in the lower limb as well as the elasticity of the vein walls act like a pump to help return the blood to the heart against the force of gravity. The symptoms of varicose veins vary from person to person. In most cases, the first symptom that is noticed is veins that are dark purple or blue in colour. Oftentimes, the veins will appear to be twisted, bulging chords in the lower leg. If pain is present, it is often described as a heavy/ aching feeling in the leg. Other symptoms include itching, burning or throbbing around the affected vein. The pain associated with varicose veins usually worsens after sitting or standing for long periods of time. There are several causes for varicose veins. Most commonly, it is due to increased age. As we age, our veins loose elasticity in their walls which may allow blood to flow backwards away from the heart. In addition, wear and tear of the valves may also allow back flow of blood. These two factors will lead to blood pooling in the veins which in turn will cause the veins to enlarge and become varicose. Another common cause of varicose veins is pregnancy. During pregnancy, there are significant changes in a women’s circulatory system. These changes may cause women to develop varicose veins for the first time or cause existing varicose veins to worsen.

Finally, professions which require you to either stand or sit for long periods of time may put you at and increased risk of varicose veins. Maintaining a static position for extended periods of time reduces the amount of blood flow in the body. This is one of the reasons that I recommend that my patients who are professional truck drivers try their best to get out of the truck as often as possible. Your doctor will be able to diagnose varicose veins by taking a detailed history and performing a physical examination. If necessary, your doctor will recommend an ultrasound test to confirm the diagnosis. The good news is that treatment for most cases of varicose veins doesn’t include invasive procedures. The first form of treatment is usually wearing compression stockings. These stockings provide pressure to help the veins move the blood more efficiently. If conservative treatments fail, your doctor may recommend sclerotherapy. During this procedure, the doctor injects a solution into the varicose veins which causes them to scar and close up. Within weeks of treatment, the veins generally decrease in size and fade away. This procedure may need to be repeated if it doesn’t fully work the first time. Doctors are now starting to utilize lasers in the treatment of varicose veins. Laser surgery works using light to shrink the size of the veins. It is important to discuss all the possible treatments with your doctor in order to decide which is best for you. Until next month, drive safely. RT

T

he inaugural annual conference organized by the Truck Training Schools Association of Ontario (TTSAO) and held at the Sandman Signature Hotel in Mississauga on February 23rd and 24th was a big success. The event was packed with panel discussions on topics like ‘Future of Recruitment in the Private Fleet Industry’, ‘Recruiting Strategies from Trade Publication Experts’ and ‘Attracting & Retaining Professional Drivers’ amongst engaging trade booths from event sponsors and industry stakeholders. The ‘Stan and Dan Show’ featuring Dan Einwechter, CEO of Challenger and Stan Campbell, Host of Trucker Radio was candid, funny and positive at the same time. Congratulations to the TTSAO Conference Committee for putting together a well attended event. RT
