THIS OLD HOUSE RECEIVES A FRESH DOSE OF LOVE

St. Louis’ original RMH located on West Pine Blvd. reopened in September as a more comfortable “home-away-from-home” following extensive renovations.

his year, from May 1 to October 1, our first Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis, located in the Central West End on West Pine, was shut down for a much-needed major renovation. The entire HVAC system was replaced with a new, state-of-the-art system. Both kitchens were completely gutted, which made way for new cabinets and appliances, along with ample counter space that our Family Dinner Program volunteers will enjoy using to prepare and serve meals to the families. In addition, all 15 bathrooms were

completely redone, windows throughout the two Houses were replaced, and new carpeting, window treatments and wallpaper adorn the House. Once again, our friends from Rothman Furniture have donated all of the furniture throughout the House. We are truly amazed at the incredible transformation. As we continue to welcome families to the House, we hope they will find comfort in the beauty, elegance and charm of these two 120 year old Victorian houses that become their “home-away-from-home”.

The project cost is $1.5 million dollars. While we did not conduct a formal capital campaign to raise the funds needed for this project, we do have plenty of opportunities for individuals or companies to help us cover the cost of this rehab, including naming opportunities. “I just want to say a huge thank you for your kindness and just being there for my daughter and grandson. My daughter Megan stayed at the Park Avenue House for four months while my grandson Hudson was at Cardinal Glennon. We are so appreciative of your wonderful staff, who was Megan’s family for months, and the wonderful facility. We hope we can pay forward the kindness that was shown to us. LETTER FROM THE

PRESIDENT THIS PAST SUMMER, I SPENT A WEEK IN NICARAGUA WITH MY FAMILY, along with 55

teenagers and 12 adults, on a mission trip. My wife, Kelly, my son, Jack, and I joined my daughter, Libby, for her sixth week of service this summer. This was Libby’s fourth year being part of such a great effort in Nicaragua. Our goal was to not only dig ditches to bring water to a community for the first time, but to share our gifts with them, doing “whatever we could” to help them. Our first day in Nicaragua, our entire

group climbed Cerro Negro, the most active volcano in Central America, otherwise referred to as the “Black Hill.” All 70 of us climbed the 2,388-foot “mountain,” a grueling three to four hour journey; everyone pulled together to make sure we all conquered the “Black Hill.” We spent the next four days in the town of La Chuscada, where we dug 2,500 feet of trenches and buried piping. The people who lived in this town worked side-by-side us and became our new “best” friends. They were so kind and grateful for our time and efforts. Every day, each of our eight teams was responsible for readying their team for the work day and the long bus ride to and from our worksite: preparing ice and water and making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, not to mention the daily chores that needed to be done at our temporary residence. As time went on, the significance of the Cerro Negro climb became clear; how well we worked together as a “team” would be the key to our success during our week-long mission.

Daily, I began to see the similarities between this mission experience and being a part of the Ronald McDonald House. I see the same spirit in the Houses and Family Rooms; our incredible volunteers, staff and donors who are always there to do “whatever they can” to help the families, and our Board of Directors, committees and staff who demonstrate daily the significance of teamwork in fulfilling our mission. This trip reminded me of the pride I have in serving as the president of our outstanding organization. Thank you for the role you play in helping us achieve great success on an annual basis and helping so many families during a time of great need. Thank you,

Ronald McDonald House on Park Ave. On May 4, 2013, RMHC supporters gathered the tab tops they had been collecting for the past year and joined us for a day of fun with Ronald McDonald! Participants enjoyed games, food, face painting, arts & crafts, and more. Awards were given for top collectors in the following groups: schools, organizations, individuals and families. On June 2 and 3, 2013, the 28th Annual Cassidy Turley/Ronald McDonald House Golf Tournament was held at the beautiful Meadowbrook Country Club. The two-day event kicked off on Sunday with a seated dinner, a silent/live auction and raffles. The next day, 230 golfers hit the links, where threesomes competed for the championship. In total, the event raised $736,000 for The House that Love Built. We would like to thank Cassidy Turley for their outstanding leadership as our Title Sponsor! We are very grateful for all the hard work and dedication from our committee members and volunteers assisting at the tournament, soliciting auction items, providing creative ideas and much more! 13th Annual Kids & Clays Dinner Auction & Tournament August 16 & 17, 2013

20th Annual Scramble for Charity September 27, 2013 Norman K. Probstein Golf Course in Forest Park

This year’s Ronald McDonald House Kids & Clays Tournament, sponsored by Moneta Group, LLC., raised more than $311,000! The dinner auction was held on Friday, August 16, at the Edward Jones Atrium in Des Peres, where guests dressed in western wear and bid electronically on silent auction items. The Sporting Clays Tournament took place at Strathalbyn Farms Club in Weldon Spring, where shooters participated in two flights and challenging side games. We are extremely grateful for the support of Moneta Group as the Title Sponsor and for inviting clients to participate and support the RMHC mission! We’d also like to thank Edward Jones for hosting our event in its fabulous facility!

Many thanks to McDonald’s, the Title Sponsor of our 20th Annual Scramble for Charity Golf Tournament! This event took place on Friday, September 27, at the Norman K. Probstein Golf Course in Forest Park. Teams of four competed for great prizes in morning and afternoon rounds. Golfers had the opportunity to test their luck at several par-3 games set up on the course. To add to the fun, the Ladies of McDonald’s (YaYa’s) hosted a tent filled with exciting raffle items, as well as delicious food and drinks! This year’s event raised a record-breaking $114,000! VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Mary Binch Celebrates Five Years in the Family Room

Five years ago, Mary Binch saw a message in her church bulletin calling for volunteers for a new Ronald McDonald Family Room at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. She picked up the phone,

called RMHC St. Louis, and the rest is history. Now, as we celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Family Room, we also celebrate the dedicated volunteers who have been with us since it began, including Mary, who donates her time every Monday from noon to 3 p.m. “I feel strongly about helping kids,” says Mary, whose two children, thankfully, never had to go to the hospital while they were growing up. “I want to give back to the kids and families who are struggling.” Sometimes she shows them where they can do laundry or take a shower; other times she cleans. Many days, however, she simply lends an ear. “It’s amazing how people open up,” she says. You get to know the mom and the grandma. You visit and get the weekly update. You start rooting for the kids.”

In her five years as a Ronald McDonald Family Room volunteer, Mary has seen friendships form between families, especially those facing similar situations. And in that time, she herself has developed bonds with some of the families who visit, too. “One lady and I always talk about books. She wants to put all of the sickness aside and talk about what we are reading right now.” Every family is different, but no matter what they need, Mary is there to help on Monday afternoons. According to Mary, what she receives in return while volunteering is just as special. “It’s been a wonderful, wonderful experience,” she says. “People are so appreciative. It is a joy.”

Christine Norris Makes Wednesdays Wonderful Just a few years ago, Christine Norris, along with her husband’s alumni group, served breakfast to families staying at the Ronald McDonald House on West Pine. This simple act of service quickly sparked Christine’s interest in the Ronald McDonald House, which then motivated her to take the next steps in becoming a weekly House volunteer. For the past two and a half years, Christine has served as the reservationist at our West County House. Every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon, Christine takes care of all of the reservations for the West County House, which includes contacting families, preparing for their arrival and filing the appropriate paper work. Although these are some of her routine responsibilities, Christine is always

willing to take on a new project, with the helpful philosophy of, “Whatever the house needs, I do.” Christine’s favorite volunteer responsibility is serving as a resource for the families who call the West County House “home.” This can range anywhere from rounding up extra linens to giving a family directions to a local grocery store – anything to help the families live their lives as normally as possible. Christine also enjoys assisting Matt, the house manager, with a variety of projects and documents, such as creating charts and signs for the House. According to Christine, both the families and the RMHC St. Louis staff fuel her passion as a RMHC volunteer. The familiar faces of returning families and the staff members’ dedication to

the mission of providing a “home-away-from-home” constantly inspires Christine to continue volunteering and making a difference, and we couldn’t be more grateful for her support!

<< Washers Tournament The Red Shoe Society hosted its first annual Washers Tournament on July 13, 2013 at Wehner Senior Memorial Park in Shrewsbury. More than 110 participants and 20 volunteers joined in the fun and helped raise nearly $8,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. RMHC extends special thanks to the event chair, Ryan Murphy, and Title Sponsor, Midwest Vein Center.

Color Me Rad 5K >> RMHC St. Louis was the official charity partner for the St. Louis Color Me Rad 5K race on July 28, 2013 at Gateway Motorsports Park in Illinois. More than 2,000 participants and volunteers spent the day dancing, running and “colorbombing” each other to support The House that Love Built. Thanks to the Red Shoe Society, our dedicated volunteers, and the runners who registered using a special RMHC code, this event raised nearly $9,000! For those who are charitably minded, giving just became more affordable, especially for those affected by the new tax increase and accustomed to simply writing a check to make their charitable donation. Rather than writing a check, we recommend considering the gift of highly appreciated securities held for at least a year and saving the cash to buy back into the market. This strategy applies for gifts both large and small and for those in a marginal tax bracket of 25% or higher. That said, let’s consider an example of an affluent couple itemizing and filing jointly with Taxable Ordinary Income of $500,000. The couple is subject to a top ordinary federal income tax rate of 39.6%, federal Long-Term Capital Gain tax rate of 20% and subject to the new 3.8% Medicare Surtax. They are considering a substantial charitable gift of $100,000, and the table to the left provides a comparison of a charitable gift of cash versus a charitable gift of securities. As you can see, the use of highly appreciated long-term stock leads to a 31.5% reduction in the couple’s cost of giving. Taken a step further the couple may give $145,000 of highly appreciated assets for approximately the same net cost of a $100,000 gift of cash.

The 2013 Home Away from Home Appeal is the annual giving program that provides the financial foundation for the yearly operation of our three Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. Families who call our Houses “home” are asked to contribute just $5 a night for their stay, despite our estimated actual costs of $70 per family, per night. Still, this fee is waived approximately 40% of the time to ease the financial stress caused by mounting medical bills. Many donors find that fulfilling their pledge over time enables them to make an even greater impact on the success of the appeal. Those who make a donation of $1,000 or more this year will become members of the Cornerstone Society, which recognizes our organization’s most generous donors.

The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, a partnership between RMHC St. Louis and the Eye Care Charity of Mid-America, was launched in March 2013. Since then, this mobile eye care unit has traveled to dozens of schools and communities throughout the St. Louis area. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile has provided eye exams free-of-charge to hundreds of children, many of whom also received free glasses following their exam. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile travels to schools located in areas where the need for eye care is greatest due to low household income, including city schools, rural schools and social service agencies. This program enables early diagnosis and treatment, which are important for maintaining good vision, eye health and the prevention of vision loss. Routine vision exams can also help identify signs of diabetes and other serious medical conditions. Children who need glasses can choose from a variety of new frames displayed in the mobile unit, and glasses will likely be provided at point of service. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile program would not be possible without licensed optometrists who volunteer their time aboard the vehicle.

In November 2008, our 5-year-old daughter, Ava, suffered two major strokes. Although she remained cognitive and able to understand and recognize the world around her, she was unable to walk, talk or eat. We spent most of the following year at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. During that time, the Ronald McDonald Family Room became our go-to spot. Although we live just an hour away in O’Fallon, Missouri, my husband, Chris, and I never wanted to be too far from our daughter. The Family Room offered free snacks, Internet access, washers, dryers, and hot showers. Most importantly, it kept us close to Ava. On Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2009, our sweet Ava died at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. We were right by her side. But our story doesn’t end there. During the course of Ava’s illness, our youngest daughter, Bryn, was diagnosed with the same heart condition that caused Ava’s strokes. In 2010, we found ourselves living at the hospital again when Bryn was listed for a heart transplant. That December, she received the greatest gift imaginable - a donor heart. For the next two months, the Ronald McDonald Family Room was once again our “home-away-from-home.” — Chanda Tracy

DDI Media and Drury Hotels employees donate Wish List items in honor of their colleague’s experience in the Ronald McDonald Family Room

Last spring, Erin Mazzola’s life was turned upside-down when her daughter, Abigail, was admitted to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where she stayed for a little more than four weeks. The Mazzola family’s stay at the hospital was filled with many ups, downs, and uncertainties, but one thing they could always count on was the Ronald McDonald Family Room on the fifth floor. “This space made us feel like we left the hospital for home, even for just a few minutes, without truly leaving Abigail,” says Erin. “The laundry and shower facilities were very nice and clean. And the room is so bright and open; it feels like home, even though you’re still in the hospital.” The Mazzola family, like many other families, found an oasis, a small get-away from their day at the Family Room. There, they could look forward to a warm shower, a fresh cup of coffee, and a friendly conversation with a volunteer or fellow parent. “We will never know for sure why Abigail was ‘chosen’ to be a patient at Children’s Hospital, but we do know that it has changed our lives forever. We are so grateful to everyone at the hospital and RMHC,” says Erin. DDI Media, where Erin works as a sales representative, and Drury Hotels teamed up in May to donate RMHC Wish List items in honor of Abigail. The company’s generous donation included snacks, soap, and other supplies for the Ronald McDonald Family Room. Tony Mariani, who also works for DDI Media, volunteers on the annual RMHC St. Louis Golf Tournament Committee. “It is our hope that, because of Abigail, RMHC is able to increase the contribution levels and volunteer time to ensure that other families can benefit from their services as much as our family did,” says Erin.
