Pearl's Story: At just 3 years old, Pearl Hollan has
survived chemotherapy, heart failure and a kidney transplant
T
oday, Pearl Hollan is a cheerful, energetic 3-year-old who loves to play. Looking at her now, it's hard to believe that just a few months ago, she was receiving treatment for both heart failure and kidney cancer at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Pearl’s struggle with illness began in 2009 when her parents took her to the doctor with what seemed to be a chronic respiratory infection. Rather than returning home with antibiotics, the Hollans were rushed from their home in Springfield, Mo., to St. Louis for emergency treatment. A chest x-ray had revealed that baby Pearl was suffering from congestive heart failure. “As a mom, I’m freaked out even by pneumonia,” says Charity; congestive heart failure seemed insurmountable. Yet Pearl’s ordeal had just begun. Nine months after her heart condition was treated successfully, Chris and Charity noticed a lump on Pearl's right side. A medical examination found three tumors, called Wilms’ tumors, on her kidneys. At the age of 1, Pearl was diagnosed with
kidney cancer. The tumors were caused by a genetic mutation, meaning they would always return once removed. Regardless of treatment, Pearl would need a kidney transplant one day. For the next six months, Pearl underwent chemotherapy. In Feb. 2010, her entire right kidney, a tumor on her left kidney and a portion of her liver were removed. Surgeons kept Pearl’s left kidney intact with the intention of waiting until she was older to remove it. Despite the decision to wait, Pearl’s left kidney failed in Oct. 2010. It was removed four months later, but because of her recent chemotherapy treatment, Pearl was not eligible for a kidney transplant. Instead, she was placed on a daily dialysis regimen. Then, in April 2011, Pearl went into heart failure. She was given intravenous medication and placed on both the kidney and heart transplant lists, and her dialysis was increased to 19 hours every day. It was at this point that the Hollans turned to Ronald McDonald House. Before April, the family stored all of their belongings in the back seat of their car and took showers at the hospital, where they also spent their nights. However, once they began living at the Ronald McDonald House on Park
Chris, Claire, Charity and Pearl Hollan Avenue, all of this changed. “The Ronald McDonald House has given us a sanctuary and some privacy," says Charity. "It’s also nice to have a homecooked meal,” she adds. After arriving at the Park Avenue House, Charity, Chris and both sets of grandparents took turns caring for Pearl in St. Louis and her younger sister, Claire, in Springfield. When they were in St. Louis, the House provided the family with a crib, which allowed Claire to visit, as well. Between October and July, the Hollans spent no more than six weeks at home. With treatment, Pearl’s heart condition improved. She was taken off the heart transplant list and moved to the top of the kidney transplant list. On July 7, 2011, Pearl received a new kidney, and on July 29, 2011, she moved home. Best of all, a check-up this September revealed that Pearl is still cancer-free. Overjoyed at Pearl’s return home and thankful for what the Ronald McDonald House has offered them, the Hollans fully intend to support their local chapter. “As soon as my husband and I are available,” says Charity, “our plan is to give back.”

t’s hard to believe that Ronald McDonald House Charities has been serving St. Louis and its surrounding communities for 30 years. I belive that, when they first began, its great founders envisioned serving 59 families every night. The foresight of our leadership over the years has known few limitations. Providing a "home-awayfrom-home" for families with sick children has always been the number one goal. If you are reading this, you have had some involvement with RMHC St. Louis or we are asking for your involvement. Whether you have worked at an event, Larry Carrico, Chairman of the Board served dinner at one of the Houses or volunteered in a Family Room, please know your time matters and heals hearts. The talents brought by volunteers to our committees and Boards over the years allows for the continuation of our great work. Those talents have created the treasure we need to keep us growing. Everyone's concern, professionalism and giving spirits have afforded us great success, and we, and 30 years of RMHC St. Louis' families, are grateful. We have been blessed with time, talent and treasure, to be sure, but our work is never complete. We have many ways you can continue to help: • •

We always need to add to our 1,200 volunteers. Spread the word that our Houses provide services outside 50 miles of our Metro area and that RMHC operates 300+ other Houses all around the country and the world. Remember when you helped build the 300th Ronald McDonald House in the world only one year ago? Our best kept secret, the Family Rooms at St. Louis Children's Hospital, SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center and Mercy Children’s Hospital, are available to local families. Families can relax, take a warm shower, grab a snack, check an e-mail or share with others in a similar situation. Be an advocate for RMHC St. Louis. Stay informed and share information with others about fund raisers, wish list needs, volunteer opportunities and the difference RMHC St. Louis makes in the lives of so many.
Volunteers and their incredible generosity make all this possible. As Chairman, my biggest honor is to say “thank you” for all you do. You have lent and will continue to lend a shoulder to lean on, a place to rest and a kindness that helps and heals. We look forward to another 30 years of success and service through your time, talents and treasure.

he 2nd Annual Mercy Children's Hospital/RMHC Ride took place on June 18, 2011 and was a success, raising a total of $192,000 — with donations still coming! The Ride, which started and finished in Forest Park, offered several distance options, including a 6-mile Family Fun Ride with Ronald, a 32-mile fitness challenge, a 64-mile Metric Century, a 100-mile Century and a 100mile Fondo (timed ride). Although the weather was not ideal,

n June 5 and 6, 2011, Ronald McDonald House Charities hosted the 26th Annual Cassidy Turley/RHM Golf Tournament, which proves to be our most successful event, year after year. The two-day event kicked off on Sunday at the beautiful Meadowbrook Country Club with a seated dinner, as well as a silent and live auction that raised a record-breaking $650,000 to benefit Ronald McDonald House. The next day, 220 golfers hit the links, where threesomes competed for the championship. The tournament
hundreds of dedicated riders braved the storms in support of RMHC. We congratulate the top three Fondo finishers: Stefan Adams, Jim Thompson and Brian Marsoun. We would also like to thank the top three fundraisers: Bob Scheetz, Todd Seabaugh and Chris Wright. Be sure to join us for the 3rd Annual RMHC Ride on Saturday, June 16, 2012. This event will be limited to 1,500 riders, so secure your spot early.

T
his year’s Kids & Clays event, sponsored by Marcone Supply, raised more than $290,000. A dinner auction was held on Friday, August 19, at the Edward Jones Atrium in Des Peres, where attendees came dressed in their country best. The following day, a Sporting Clays tournament took place at Nilo Farms in Alton, Ill. Shooters participated in two flights, in addition to challenging side games that showcased their skills.

helping Hands Behind-the-Scenes Heroes
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis relies on its volunteers to perform a
plethora of jobs, from working the front desk to maintaining the quality of our Houses. While most of our volunteers interact with the families on a day-to-day basis, there are many others who work behind the scenes and receive much less recognition. Our delivery volunteers are charged with the task of making sure that all of RMHC’s mail, packages and inventory arrive at the appropriate Houses. They guarantee that every facility has its required materials and allow the rest of the staff to best serve the families in other ways. To acknowledge all of their work, we would like to introduce and thank our outstanding delivery volunteers!
Jim Kiley Every Monday and Friday, Jim uses his own car to shuttle mail and supplies between the three Ronald McDonald Houses. He has been a courier since April 2011 and an avid volunteer for much longer, devoting much of his week to a variety of service projects. “Our family has been very blessed,” says Jim, “and now that I’m retired, I have a little more time to put something back in the pot.”
What is Jim's favorite part of volunteering?
“I enjoy it all… People and things need to be moved around, and I’ve got the time, the car and the flexibility to meet some of those needs. I like meeting new people. I like the feeling of helping people out.”
Sharon Carrico Sharon began volunteering her time as the warehouse manager soon after the West County House opened in the fall of 2010. She quickly became invaluable, using her previous work experience to develop a system for the warehouse. “This seemed like a really natural fit,” she says. Sharon's time is not spent with families but with supplies. Her main duties include taking inventory of all warehouse items, ordering stock and divvying up products among the Houses. She even donated a computer and software to accelerate and improve the inventory process. “I think that having this position has really made a difference in the efficiencies and the stewardship of the House. To me, making a difference is the most important thing.”
What is Sharon's favorite part of volunteering?
“Filling a specific need is the most satisfying thing, and what I brought to this position has made a difference and has made it easier for the warehouse process.”
Gary Deeken The husband of longtime volunteer Gloria Deeken, Gary began driving the Ronald McDonald House truck in April 2011. Happy to help in any way, Gary understands the importance of his contribution. “It serves a great cause,” says Gary. “Even though I don’t work with the families directly, I know that I’m helping the people who do.”
What is Gary's favorite part of volunteering? “Everybody who works for the Ronald McDonald House is great. I just can’t say it enough. From Dan on down, everybody is great to work with, and I enjoy helping with the overall effort. I feel like what I do is worthwhile.”

James Tesson
After working in the corporate world for 30 years, Mark wanted to give back to the community. Now he has been volunteering for Ronald McDonald House Charities for two years. Every week, Mark delivers supplies to the Family Rooms, and once a month, he picks up more supplies from Gateway Distribution.
James Tesson makes the rounds to the three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms and guarantees that everything is in order. His duties include delivering necessary items to the Rooms and restocking any inventory that is low. “We wanted to be able to help,” James says, referring to himself and his wife, who is also a volunteer. “Our kids have never been really sick like that, and we want to be able to help families who need a place to go.”
What is Mark's favorite part of volunteering? “The satisfaction that, in a small way, I help out the families who are going through a tough time. Also, I like meeting all of the great Tuesday morning volunteers at the Family Rooms. They are indeed the best of the best!"
What is James' favorite part of volunteering?
“I like getting to talk to some of the families at the different Houses. When we were at West Pine, I got to know some of the kids and their families."
Tom Stiefvater A delivery volunteer for almost 15 years, Tom is a well-known face at every House. He was inspired by his wife, Lisa, who is the vice president of operations at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis. “It was quite an eye-opener to see what these families go through,” says Tom. “I always tell my friends, 'You think you’re having a bad day? Come down to Lisa’s office and sit there for a while.'”
What is Tom's favorite part of volunteering?
“I normally bring my dog with me, and to see these kids light up is great. The thing that amazes me is that these kids are all so happy.”

the Newest Members New Faces: Meet of the RMHC Team Matt Lauer joined
RMHC as the West County House Manager in May. Matt has enjoyed serving the families and getting to know all of the volunteers that help make the West County House a welcoming home to those families. Matt, his wife, Tracy, and their son Andy welcomed a new baby, Henry, in August. Matt was previously the Area Director for Special Olympics Missouri, and while there, agreed to rappel down the side of a 21-story hotel in order to raise $1,500. Now he’s eager to provide that kind of dedication to the RMHC mission!
Katie Underhill
joined RMHC as the Communications Coordinator in August. Katie studied journalism at the University of Missouri and was formerly the Managing Editor of St. Louis Homes & Lifestyles magazine. She is an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball and Mizzou football fan.
Jen Cline started as the Assistant
House Manager at the Park Avenue House in March. Jen studied at Henry Ford Community College and Cornell College before attending graduate school at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. She has professional experience teaching sociology at St. Louis Community College, as Assistant Manager at Reading Habitat Book Store, with the Census Bureau, as a promoter and as an organizer with a nonprofit art exhibition.

is the new House Parent at the West Pine House. When she’s not spending time at the Ronald McDonald House, she devotes time to her studies. She is currently studying culinary arts and is more than happy to share some of her favorite recipes!

became a Ronald McDonald House volunteer and donor more than 10 years ago and have been hooked ever since. It’s one of my most rewarding investments of time and money.
As I wish to see the success of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis long into the future, I recently updated my 401(k) plans to include RMHC St. Louis as a beneficiary. Several years ago, I realized I could leave the majority of that plan to my family, but still have some left over to designate to some of my favorite nonprofits, including RMHC St. Louis. For now, because of my age, I have left my gift as a designated amount of my 401(k). But as I get older, I will consider other options, such as a gift annuity, which would put the principle in the hands of RMHC St. Louis and provide excellent lifetime predictable income for me. I will see what makes the most sense from a tax and income standpoint, based on the recommendations of my financial and tax advisors, and, most importantly, my heart. You may think of a planned gift
as only for the very wealthy, but it’s not — it’s also for people like you and me. A gift of any size is important, regardless of how and when it’s given. Imagine the power of our collective giving if we all included a charity as one of the designated beneficiaries in our retirement plans, even if just a small percentage of that plan. An Oasis in the Hospital Ronald McDonald Family Rooms offer a "home-away-from-home" for families with children in the hospital due to illness or injury
L
ocated inside Mercy Children’s Hospital, St. Louis Children's Hospital and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, each of St. Louis’ three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms comes equipped with the most essential comforts of “home.” These places of refuge allow local families, as well as those who have traveled long distances, to take a shower, do laundry, eat a meal, catch the news on TV and e-mail loved ones — all just steps away from their child’s hospital room. Sometimes, despite all of these amenities, a friendly face and a sympathetic ear are the most appreciated attributes of a Ronald McDonald Family Room. “When I leave the Family Room after my three-hour shift, I feel that I made a difference just by being a good listener. For many families, having someone to talk with other than doctors and nurses makes their day seem normal,” says Cindy Knauss, who has been volunteering at the Family Room in
St. Louis Children's Hospital for more than four years. The Family Rooms would not exist without the help of 400 dedicated volunteers, like Cindy. In 2010, more than 5,300 new families found comfort and care at one of our Family Rooms, and we’re on the way to exceeding that number in 2011. “The Family Room at St. Louis Children's Hospital was a place of calm and quiet — a much needed respite," says Mary Stubbs, a longtime supporter of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis whose son was hospitalized for 23 days, 15 spent in the ICU. While Mary always understood the value of the RMHC mission, she never imagined her family would one day need its services. “On the rare occasion when you could steal away from the ICU, the Family Room was there, a place to step away from the anxiety," she adds. "Spending time in the Family Room helps you realize you are not alone." But it’s not only patients’ families, who see value in the Family Rooms. "Families need a break from the
hospital environment, but they need to stay close to their children, too," says Sherlyn Hailstone, President of SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. "The Ronald McDonald Family Room offers the best of both worlds. We hear from families all the time what it means to be able to watch television, do laundry, take a shower and just unwind while staying in the same building with their child. It refreshes families and helps them better cope with the stress that comes with having a sick or injured child." Christine Crain, Senior Vice President of Operations at Mercy Children’s Hospital, also notes the positive impact that the Family Rooms have on patients and their loved ones. “The Family Room provides a quiet, comfortable getaway. It’s a place where families can take a deep breath and relax,” she explains. “We value the partnership that we have with Ronald McDonald House Charities, and we are so pleased to be able to offer this to families.”

Volunteer Opportunities Volunteers are needed during weekend shifts at our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. Volunteers will help check-in families and maintain a welcoming atmosphere. You can volunteer as an individual or form a larger group, called a McClique, which shares the volunteering hours by adopting a specific time slot. The McGift Shoppe is operated by our gracious volunteers and depends on donations, which can be dropped off at any of our three Houses starting midNovember. HEART BITS Tracey and Jerry Iverson stayed at the West County Ronald McDonald House in Feb. 2011 when their daughter, DeLana, was born premature. In August 2011, the Iversons returned to the Ronald McDonald House with several Wish List items, as well as a generous personal donation to our Sponsor-AFamily Program, as a way to "pay it forward."
