2018 ANNUAL REPORT

WE BELIEVE IN THE HEALING POWER OF FAMILY.

OUR MISSION To provide a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill children seeking medical treatment in a St. Louis-area hospital.

LETTER

FROM THE CHAIRPERSON Passing the Torch It was my privilege to serve as Board Chairperson for 2017 and 2018, and it is my honor to pass the leadership onto Deb Vogt and several other new Board Members. The vitality of our charity has always rested on a strong foundation of devoted volunteers, an extremely capable and service-oriented staff, an energetic and enthusiastic army of committee members led by a passionate Executive Committee and Board. What a powerful combination. A charity is only as good as its people. And we are fortunate to have great people. If you are reading this letter, I thank you! You make it all possible, and you make it fun. As I reflect back over the past two years, I set personal goals to expand our young professionals group, the Red Shoe Society, and to complete a city facility assessment and strategy. I am so proud of the momentum of our Red Shoe Society, which represents a key component of our future leadership, donor and volunteer base for Ronald McDonald House. I am also excited about our purchase of 2.6 acres of land at the intersection of Chouteau and Tower Grove Avenues. What an optimal location for our new House, which will be capable of serving more families in need. I look forward to our future, knowing that we have so many people personally vested in strengthening Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. We have so much momentum, and we owe it all to you. All the best,

Steve Pelch, 2018 Board Chairperson Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis

CORE PROGRAMS One of the worst things that can happen to a parent is to learn that their child is sick and needs to be hospitalized. Suddenly, life stops overnight, and the world is full of worry and fear. For many of these families, there is an added stress: distance. Sometimes the best medical care available is hundreds of miles from home - or more. In addition, families face the financial demands of mounting medical bills, job insecurity and a healing journey that can take months or even years. This is why Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms exist: to keep families close to their seriously ill children.

RONALD McDONALD HOUSE® • Three Houses and eight extended-stay apartments in St. Louis serve as a home-away-from-home for 59 families of seriously ill children each night • Provides the comforts of home to more than 1,300 families per year, including private bedrooms, home-cooked meals, comfortable living areas, a kitchen and laundry facilities • Open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year

RONALD McDONALD FAMILY ROOM® • Four St. Louis-area Ronald McDonald Family Rooms each serve as an oasis inside Mercy Children’s Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital • Provides comfort and care to over 12,000 families each year, with 90,000+ visitors annually • Each Family Room is equipped with a kitchen area, complimentary snacks and coffee, showers, laundry facilities, Internet and TV

MEET RYDER On December 6, 2018, Ryder Hodge was born three months early. Premature and weighing less than 3 pounds, he was transferred immediately to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Mercy Children’s Hospital. His parents, Sheena and Kurtis, were terrified. “I didn’t know what we were going to do,” says Sheena. She and her husband were more than three hours from their hometown of Salem, Missouri. In addition, she was hospitalized and recovering from an emergency C-section due to preeclampsia. Thankfully, the Hodge family didn’t have to worry for long. Throughout the next four months that Ryder spent in the hospital, the Ronald McDonald House became their homeaway-from-home. Every morning, they could simply walk across the street to spend the

day with their son. Staying close meant that Sheena and Kurtis could be there for Ryder on good days and bad, giving him the best medicine of all - the unconditional love of family. “He teaches me so much,” says Sheena. “No journey in the NICU is easy, but he did not have any major setbacks. He just fights and fights.” In March 2019, after nearly four months in the hospital, Ryder graduated from the NICU! Sheena and Kurtis were thrilled to be able to take their healthy baby boy home to his four sisters in Salem, where he continues gaining weight and hitting milestones. “The Ronald McDonald House has been such a blessing,” says Kurtis. “It’s comfortable, and the staff and other guests became like family.”

HOURS OF RECORDED WORK

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT As Charles Dickens once wrote, “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.” This could not be a better summary of 2018 at Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. In January, we found a piece of property that met all the criteria we had established in our long-range plan to build a new Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis City with additional capacity and better amenities for our families. We did our due diligence on the property and purchased it in April. Since that time, we have been working with our Facilities Committee and Board Members to design and create a House that will address our needs. We have also been working with neighborhood groups, the City of St. Louis and Washington University Redevelopment Corporation to move the project forward. The summer saw us reach new heights in our fundraising efforts, with our Golf Tournament and Sporting Clays events hitting new record highs. We also opened a fourth St. Louis-area Ronald McDonald Family Room inside St. Louis Children’s Hospital’s new tower, which will serve an additional 5,000 families per year. Then, in September, we reached a tremendous low when we discovered mold inside our West Pine House. We relocated all 20 families to hotel rooms while it was remediated, and the first part of 2019 was spent putting the House back together. The entire process to relocate families, remediate the mold and restore the House cost $475,000, which was not covered by insurance. While the cost of the project was disappointing, having the House “down” and unavailable to families for almost six months was the most demoralizing experience I have encountered in my 25 years with the organization. However, once again, the incredible St. Louis community came through for us. When it was time for the House to reopen, hundreds of volunteers and even local businesses rallied together to make sure it was ready for families to move back in as soon as possible. I am so grateful to everyone who helped us through this tough time. Now, as we move into 2019, we do so with high hopes of launching a capital campaign and raising the dollars needed to build a new home-away-from-home, which will allow us to serve more families. Thanks for being such a great friend to the Ronald McDonald House. Always grateful,
