KEEPING FAMILIES CLOSE

2016 ANNUAL REPORT

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRPERSON As a CPA, I am a numbers person. It is hard for me to look back on 2016 and not focus on the numbers… • 2016 marked the 35th anniversary of Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis – we were established in 1981 • In 2016 we crossed the $4 million mark in support and revenue dollars raised – led by strong events like our Kids & Clays auction and tournament, which raised $365,000, over $30,000 more than any preceding year • 2016 also marked the 5th anniversary of our Cornerstone Society, which saw 473 members donating over $1.6 million – the highest single year of members and dollars to date I could continue, but suffice it to say, 2016 was a great year! RMHC remains an extremely strong organization due to our generous donors, tireless volunteers and amazing staff. We started the year with our Park Avenue House closed for a much-needed facelift. Due to hard work and a lot of juggling, we made sure we never missed a beat in serving the families that would have normally stayed at the Park Avenue House. When the House reopened in April 2016, it was better than ever. We have received tremendous feedback about the work that was done to make it more comfortable and welcoming for our families who stay there. During 2016, we served 12,300 families in our three Family Rooms located in our wonderful St. Louis pediatric hospitals. This represents 1,000 more families than in 2015. The most amazing figure relates to the 7,500 families who visited our Family Rooms and were new to our organization. The power of their experience with RMHC during those interactions and our ability to provide them a respite during long, difficult days is incredible. It is hard to believe that 2016 marked the end of my nine remarkable years on the RMHC Board of Directors. I will greatly miss the Board, the staff and the amazing volunteers that I have worked with during my time on the board. However, I know, like all those who have served before me, that RMHC is a family that keeps you close, even if you might no longer “live at home.” I believe this is one of the amazing differentiators of our organization, and I look forward to staying in touch with my family and continuing to watch RMHC grow and do amazing things in our community. Sincerely, Felicia Malter Chairperson, 2016 Board of Directors

The first Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis opened on West Pine Boulevard as an eight-bedroom home. Since that time, we have grown to include three Houses and eight long-term apartments, all of which provide a home-away-fromhome to 59 families each night. We have also added three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, located inside three St. Louis-area pediatric medical centers, with plans to open a fourth Family Room in 2017. 2016 marked the 35th Anniversary of Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis, and we certainly had many reasons to celebrate! Most of all, we enjoyed celebrating the St. Louis community for its generosity and support over the past 35 years, as RMHC St. Louis couldn’t have achieved such incredible growth without our wonderful partners. In July, The Big 550 KTRS hosted a live radio broadcast from our West Pine House to commemorate its opening, and supporters dropped off Wish List donations. Guest families and volunteers enjoyed a celebratory cake while perusing photos documenting the past 35 years.

MEET OUR GUEST FAMILIES These special children and their families found comfort and care inside a St. Louis-area Ronald McDonald House or Ronald McDonald Family Room in 2016.

GENESIS In May 2016, Genesis and her mom, Vilma, were finally on their way back home to El Salvador. They had spent the past seven months at the West County Ronald McDonald House while Genesis, who suffered from Vitamin D-Resistant Rickets, underwent several surgeries to straighten her legs at Shriners Hospitals for Children – St. Louis. While at the House, Genesis spent time making friends with other children, volunteers, and the RMHC staff. She became particularly close to our resident therapy dog, Frankie. Since returning home, Genesis has continued to recover, spending her days playing, going to school and enjoying being a 7-year-old!

THE MASSONI FAMILY Michael Massoni was diagnosed with an intestinal disorder called Hirschsprung’s Disease shortly after he was born. As a result, he spent a month at Mercy Children’s Hospital, where he also underwent several surgeries. During this uncertain time, Michael’s parents, Andy and Jennifer, relied on the Ronald McDonald Family Room to stay by his side. Even though they lived a short drive away in Maryland Heights, the Family Room saved them trips to and from home by providing both the essentials and helpful pick-me-ups, like coffee and snacks.

THE LOWERY FAMILY Rashawn, 16, and his mother, Joanie, called our House on Park Avenue “home” for six weeks in 2016. After becoming blind in his right eye, Rashawn was airlifted to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where he endured two craniotomy surgeries and several weeks of radiation treatments for a mass on his optic nerve. Rashawn’s 12 siblings took turns traveling to St. Louis to visit him and were able to stay at the RMH, too. “Being able to see his brothers and sisters was really helpful,” says Joanie.

THE ARNOLD FAMILY Samantha and Lucas Arnold discovered that their son, Ezekiel, would be born with spina bifida, a condition in which a baby’s spine does not develop properly, when Samantha was just 18-weeks pregnant. In 2016, the Arnolds traveled from their hometown of Pekin, Illinois, to St. Louis, where Samantha underwent fetal repair surgery. The Ronald McDonald House on Park Avenue became their home-away-from-home during Samantha’s recovery and continues to provide comfort and care when their family travels to St. Louis for Ezekiel’s medical care. “Traveling back and forth can be a major hardship,” says Samantha, “but having the Ronald McDonald House is such a blessing.”

To honor and remember their son, Chase, who passed away in June 2015, Christie and Jeremy Elmendorf hosted a gathering on what would have been his first birthday. They asked friends and family to bring donations for Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis because of the time they spent in the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Mercy Children’s Hospital after Chase was born. As a result, they collected hundreds of generous donations, which filled the lobby of our West County House and helped RMHC serve families throughout 2016.

Above, top: Volunteers from Ameren participated in a service day at our Park Avenue Ronald McDonald House in April 2016. Above, bottom: Bruce and Mitsy Daniels, who stayed at the Ronald McDonald House, hosted the 1st Annual Ride for Kyia fundraiser in 2016 in memory of their granddaughter. In total, they raised more than $3,200 for RMHC St. Louis.

DID YOU KNOW? Children whose families stay at Ronald McDonald Houses tend to be the sickest, have traveled the farthest distances for care, and spend the longest time in the hospital. Our Houses allow families to access the best medical care for their child, no matter how far away from home. LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

This Annual Report and Felicia’s letter do an excellent job of highlighting the fantastic numbers produced in 2016. And as someone who is not as strong a numbers person, I rely on great Board and Committee members like Felicia to always make sure our numbers in all facets of the organization remain strong, grow each year and are challenged to be even better. But, even someone who is not a “numbers guy” can add up all the wonderful things that took place in 2016 for our organization. Our milestone 35th year epitomized the strength and depth of our organization. Numbers aside, the dedication, commitment, leadership and precious gift of time from our army of volunteers, Board members, donors and staff allows us to continue to provide support and comfort to thousands and thousands of families each year. Being a part of this group of people and this organization is an incredible honor and inspiration to work harder and more diligently to ensure we maximize the many gifts and support we receive. As you read this Annual Report, the numbers do not lie. We are blessed to have you and so many others as a key part of our organization. Thanks for your friendship. We value it greatly.

With Gratitude,

RMHC ST. LOUIS
