OUR FAMILIES FEEL EVERY EMOTION, EXCEPT ONE: LONELINESS

OUR MISSION To provide a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill children seeking medical treatment in a St. Louis-area hospital.

LETTER

FROM THE CHAIRPERSON 2019 was a hallmark year for Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. More than 700 families with sick children benefited from The House that Love Built through stays at one of our three Houses or eight long-term apartments. Each of these families received care, comfort and compassion during their time of need. An additional 9,000 families found respite in one of our four inhospital Ronald McDonald Family Rooms this year. In each of these special rooms, they were able to find a smiling face, take a quick shower, or grab a hot cup of coffee whenever they needed a break from their day. All told, we had the honor of serving almost 100,000 individual visitors in our Houses and Family Rooms this year! None of this would have been possible without the dedication and generosity of our volunteers and donors. More than 1,500 volunteers donated over 38,000 hours of service through serving on one of our committees, helping with repairs, and staffing our Family Rooms. Over $4 million was raised in support of our core programs through gifts from more than 10,000 individuals and organizations. In fact, we had record-breaking years in both our special events and annual giving fundraising efforts! Despite all of these successes, each year brings with it a unique set of challenges. In 2019, we were able to re-open the West Pine Ronald McDonald House after several months of closure due to mold. Throughout that difficult time, we never lost sight of our mission and commitment to family-centered care. As we look to 2020, it is clear that we have a difficult road ahead. However, as the world deals with change, Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis remains a constant. We provide comfort and support to families of seriously ill children when they need it most. Ronald McDonald House Charities stands on a solid foundation built over the years by our generous donors, volunteers and dedicated staff. We look forward to continuing this journey with you and serving families in their time of greatest need. All the best,

CORE PROGRAMS One of the worst things that can happen to a parent is to learn that their child is sick and needs to be hospitalized. Suddenly, life stops overnight, and the world is full of worry and fear. For many of these families, there is an added stress: distance. Sometimes the best medical care available is hundreds of miles from home - or more. In addition, families face the financial demands of mounting medical bills, job insecurity and a healing journey that can take months or even years. This is why Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms exist: to keep families close to their seriously ill children.

WHERE THEY ARE NOW: SARAH RUHL REFLECTS ON HER TIME AT THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE On September 7, 2003, Sarah Ruhl went into labor three and a half weeks early. Her son, Elias, was born prematurely in Iron County, Missouri. As a new mother, Sarah was overwhelmed to hear that her baby would need to be air lifted to St. Louis Children’s Hospital as soon as possible. In the midst of transport, Sarah held her son for a brief moment before the team of medical professionals prepared him for the flight. It would not be until Elias was two weeks old that she could hold him again. Shortly after watching Elias leave for St. Louis, Sarah discharged herself from the hospital - against her doctor’s request - and followed her son. She was determined to be at her son’s side, even if that meant traveling over 100 miles away from her home in Ironton, Missouri. Over the next five weeks, Elias remained in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as doctors monitored the progress of his developing lungs. It was a difficult time for Sarah, but thankfully, she found a home-away-from-home just down the street at the Ronald McDonald House on West Pine Boulevard.

During her stay at the West Pine House, Sarah enjoyed the view of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis out her window, receiving a thoughtful care basket with snacks and a crossword puzzle from volunteers, and attending a bingo night with fellow RMHC families. She also appreciated the shuttle bus rides to and from the hospital. “I couldn’t be more thankful for the kindness I received,” says Sarah. “Having a bed and meals mean so much when you are so far from home.” Today, Elias is a healthy 16-year-old sophomore in high school. He aims to help others by joining the U.S. Coast Guard after he graduates. Sarah is proud of her son’s journey and grateful for the opportunity to stay close when it mattered most at RMHC St. Louis. “The volunteers were so helpful, and it made me feel like I was at a home-away-from-home,” Sarah says. “I wish I could remember their names, because there are so many people I would like to thank.”

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT 2019 was a very unique year. We started off the year in a challenging way with our West Pine House completely shut down in the midst of being put back together after discovering mold throughout both of the buildings in October of 2018. This was a very difficult and discouraging situation to deal with, but as is always the case at the Ronald McDonald House, we overcame this setback. In March, we began accepting families back into the West Pine House. As we moved through the year, we began picking up great momentum. Our annual Golf Tournament and Dinner Auction surpassed our longtime goal of raising over $1 million dollars. Additionally, our efforts to build a new 70-bedroom Ronald McDonald House began moving along in a very positive manner. We were close to finishing off all the design and layout components of the new House and as the year came to an end, we were starting to put together the infrastructure for a Capital Campaign.

Our year-end Home Away from Home appeal set a new record as well, raising more than $916,000. As we move into 2020, we look forward to launching our Capital Campaign and maybe even breaking ground on the new Ronald McDonald House.
