A Note from our BOARD CHAIRPERSON 2018 is off to a fast and dynamic start for Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis, as we continue to build on the positive momentum of the organization. I want to begin by thanking all of you for making this possible – our generous donors (financial and in-kind), our devoted volunteers, our fantastic hospital partners, our tireless staff and our dedicated Board of Directors. We are constantly reminded of the positive impact that our Houses and Family Rooms have in providing a bit of home-away-from-home as families face very challenging medical situations with their loved ones. This is evidenced by the Vaughn family, shown on the cover and highlighted in this edition of the Heartbeat. We wish all the best to Marilyn and AJ! On February 22nd, we hosted our 6th annual Cornerstone Celebration event, a fantastic evening thanking our most generous donors. At this event we also recognize an individual or family, a corporation and an organization for their long-term support of Ronald McDonald House Charities. This year’s most-deserved recipients are Kim and Brad Seabaugh, the ARCO Corporation and St. Louis Men’s Group Against Cancer. On March 21st, I was delighted to cut the ribbon, opening our fourth St. Louis-area Ronald McDonald Family Room and second at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, along with Joan Magruder and Dr. Mary Mike Cradock. Last year, we had over 61,000 combined visits to our Family Rooms, which provide a bit of respite and a multitude of convenient services during prolonged pediatric hospital stays. And if that wasn’t enough, on April 5th we purchased 2.5 acres of land at the intersection of Chouteau and Tower Grove Avenues. This is a critical piece of our longer-term facility plan, to consider combining our two Saint Louis City-based Houses into one larger facility. This would allow us to serve more families, more effectively, in the future. Again, while very exciting, this is a long way off. Until then, we will continue to serve our families from our wonderful West Pine and Park Avenue facilities, in addition to our West County House. As they say, “It takes a village,” and I couldn’t be more proud, pleased and happy to be a part of this village.

MEET THE VAUGHN FAMILY RMHC St. Louis bids a fond farewell to the Vaughns, who spent 600 days at the Ronald McDonald House on West Pine Boulevard.

egan and Amos Vaughn heard the devastating news that their 13-monthold daughter, Marilyn, had a brain and spine tumor on July 14, 2016. Three days later, the Vaughns traveled 312 miles from their hometown of Danville, Illinois, to seek treatment at St. Louis Children’s Hospital for Marilyn, who had been diagnosed with Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumors (ATRT). Soon after, Megan and Amos, along with their 4 children: Solara, Selene, Marilyn and AJ, moved into the West Pine Ronald McDonald House. At the time of Marilyn’s diagnosis, the Vaughns’ youngest child, AJ, had just been born. Soon after, Amos received a blood test confirming he

was a carrier for the genetic abnormality of ATRT, meaning AJ was susceptible as well. So, as Marilyn began her chemotherapy treatments, AJ began receiving a screening MRI every three months. In August of 2017, the Vaughn family experienced a rollercoaster of emotions when an MRI showed AJ had developed two brain tumors within the same week that Marilyn was declared cancer-free. When Marilyn ended her chemotherapy treatments, AJ began his. Over the course of the next seven months, AJ underwent chemotherapy, surgery to remove a tumor, and three bone marrow transplants, meaning lots of time spent at the hospital. During his treatments and time spent recovering from

surgery, the Vaughns used the Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. “I find it really comforting,” says Megan, noting that she especially appreciated how AJ’s siblings could have a comfortable space to gather while they were at the hospital. “I have a family motto of ‘No man left behind,’ and living here meant that we all got to be together,” says Megan, adding that she has no idea what her family would have done without the Ronald McDonald House. Not only were the Vaughns able to keep their family close, they also sent their oldest girls to school and made new friends, which restored a sense of normalcy to their lives. They were even able to take their two oldest girls to a Katy Perry concert thanks to the generosity of an RMHC donor, which Megan says is one of her favorite memories from their time spent at the House. In addition, Megan attributes much of the comfort and care they received to the RMHC team. “I love the staff here; they’re just amazing. They became family to me,” she says. We are thrilled to report that in March, after 600 days at the Ronald McDonald House, the Vaughns have checked-out because both Marilyn and AJ are cancer-free! With healthy kids in tow, this family’s future looks bright as they embark upon a move to Oklahoma, where a fellow RMHC guest family with whom they became close friends resides. “It’s really awesome. I met friends here at this House who are going to help us get settled there,” says Megan, of her family’s next steps. Here at RMHC St. Louis, we miss the Vaughn family dearly but wish them all the best on their new adventure! ■

MAKING DINNER DELIGHTFUL Every meal becomes a masterpiece when the Dinner Divas visit RMHC!

ne of the most important ways that our volunteers help transform each Ronald McDonald House into a home-away-fromhome is by providing delicious meals for our guest families. When moms and dads don’t have to spend time meal-planning, grocery shopping or cooking, they can focus on what matters most – being there for their child, every step of the way. RMHC St. Louis is fortunate to have hundreds of volunteer groups participate in the Family Dinner Program. One group in particular, The Dinner Divas, has been cooking for families at our West Pine location once a month for the past three years. This friendly, charismatic group of 11 women – Denise, Donna, Deb, Alice, Vara, Diane, Elisa, Mary, Bonnie, Kathy and Paula – pull out all the stops at mealtime. From adorning the kitchen with holidaythemed décor and Donna’s beautiful, lovingly created floral arrangements, to their matching black-and-white polka dot aprons, everything The Dinner Divas bring to the table is nothing short of fabulous. This past December, in addition to their scheduled shift, they prepared muffins and French toast casserole ahead of time for families to enjoy

on Christmas morning. Five of the Divas and their families also served dinner on Christmas Eve. And in March, they served a St. Patrick’s Day-themed feast, complete with a festive green cake. They even stopped by the House one day to take on the daunting task of thawing and cleaning out the freezers – then filling them back up with casseroles they assembled for times when a volunteer group is not available so that families don’t have to go a night without dinner. During warm-weather months, John, Joe, Kent and Nick, the Dinner Divas’ husbands, join in the fun by grilling chicken or brats. On one occasion, when group-member Bonnie made her special ham and bean soup, a father who was staying at the House said it reminded him of the soup his grandmother used to make. According to the Dinner Divas, it’s bonding with our guest families over special moments like this that is most rewarding. “It makes us feel so good to do something that helps,” says Denise, the group’s leader. Here at RMHC St. Louis we couldn’t be more grateful to these extraordinary ladies for serving up lots of love and compassion with every delicious, homemade dish they create. ■

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: JIM KILEY Volunteer Jim Kiley is a “driving force” behind day-to-day operations at RMHC St. Louis.

lmost a decade ago, Jim Kiley caught a glimpse of the West County Ronald McDonald House as it was being built. From that time forward, he continued to follow its progress, eventually reaching out to see how he could lend a hand after it opened. In early 2011, Jim took on the important volunteer role of courier. Now, every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, Jim makes the rounds to all three Houses to deliver crucial items and documents, saving our organization both staff time and money. Jim’s deliveries also help RMHC ensure that we have everything we need to provide guest families with the best home-away-from-home possible, every day. In addition to his weekday deliveries, Jim is also a welcome face at all three Houses most Sundays, when he delivers several boxes of donuts that have been donated by a local bakery. According to Jim, the best part about sharing his time and talent is helping others while being out and about – something with which he is quite familiar after driving a newspaper route for 31 years – and the friendships he’s formed with RMHC staff members. “This is a great group of people,” says Jim. “Everybody has a good heart, and it’s nice to come to a place like that.” In addition to helping RMHC, Jim also volunteers for several other worthy causes, including Meals on Wheels and taking people who have transportation difficulties to their

doctor appointments. Jim says that giving back was installed in him from a young age, and he was further influenced by the schools he attended, the family he worked for throughout college and his in-laws. “If you get a chance to help somebody out, do it,” says Jim. “When Jim first started volunteering, he was doing one or two days a week. Over time, as other days became available, he took them on and now volunteers as our courier four out of the five work days,” says Alison Kaspar, Human Resources Director for RMHC St. Louis. “That is who Jim is – reliable, dedicated and someone who genuinely cares for others. Whenever he is thanked, his response back is, ‘Happy to help,’ and it shows. He is a joy to have around the Houses. He has a pretty good sense of humor, too.” ■

WELCOME TO THE BOARD RMHC St. Louis welcomes the following individuals to the 2018 Board of Directors: STEVE BESHORE is a Partner at Husch Blackwell LLP. and has been with the firm since 2002. He earned both his Bachelors in Business Administration and his law degree from Saint Louis University. Steve joined the Ronald McDonald House Golf Committee a number of years ago and has served as the tournament’s chair for corporate sponsors the past six years. Steve and his wife, Ellen, have three children Molly, Megan and Declan. Steve, Ellen and family are lifelong residents of St. Louis as well as avid fans of the Cardinals and Blues. JOAN ELHOFFER is the Owner/Operator of seven McDonald’s locations from Troy

through St. Charles, Warren and Montgomery counties, as well as Owensville, Missouri. She has worked for McDonald’s since she was 16 years old. After attending UMSL, Joan pursued management with McDonald’s and became an Owner/Operator in 1991. Currently, Joan co-chairs the Women Operator’s Tent at RMHC’s Annual Scramble for Charity Golf Tournament, which is sponsored by McDonald’s. McDonald’s is also where she met her husband of 36 years, David, with whom she has 3 daughters and 2 sonsin-law. She enjoys spending time traveling, boating and reading.

RYAN KURYLA is a Manager in the Benefits Compliance division at CBIZ, a

business advisory firm, where he has been part of the team for more than 10 years. He earned both his MBA and undergraduate degree from the Trulaske College of Business at Mizzou. Ryan has volunteered on behalf of Ronald McDonald House Charities since 2012, and served as the inaugural President of the Red Shoe Society - the young professionals group. He loves showing off his seersucker pants at their annual Kentucky Derby watch party. Ryan and his wife, Emily, have two daughters, Grace and Genevieve.

JILL OLLER serves as Director, Sales and Service in Strategic Accounts for

Graybar, a leading Fortune 500 distributor of electrical, communications and data networking products. Prior to Graybar, Jill spent 13 years in the health care industry, with 11 of those being with BJC HealthCare where she most recently was the Director, Human Resources at Missouri-Baptist Medical Center. Jill holds a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University, and holds the certification of Senior Human Resources Professional (SPHR). Jill is a native of Illinois, and currently resides in Maryville with her husband, Dave, and daughter Riley. In her free time, she enjoys attending and helping with her daughter’s sporting events and activities!

NEW FACES Meet the newest staff members of RMHC St. Louis! MCKENNA COOPER

joined as the Volunteer Coordinator in November. She is excited to continue her career in the nonprofit world. She joins RMHC from the American Red Cross, where she managed disaster relief efforts. McKenna graduated from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with her bachelor’s in Public Health. In her free time, she enjoys cheering on the St. Louis Blues!

joined as the Data Manager in December. She is a diverse individual with a wide range of expertise in nonprofit program development and evaluation with a specialty in funding management. She has worked in the service industry for many years in multiple capacities. Lanisha’s many years of experience in the non-profit arena exemplify her sincere desire to improve the overall care and well-being of the St. Louis community.

BETH VOEGLTI came onboard this Spring as an HR Assistant. Beth’s background includes being an HR Generalist with an emphasis in recruiting. She also holds a Master of Arts in Human Resources Management from Webster University. Outside of work, she loves road trips with her family, watching her girls play soccer and walking their dog, Benny.

excited to transition into the role of Assistant House Manager at Park Avenue. Allyssa graduated with a degree in Child and Family Development with an emphasis in Child Life from Missouri State University, where she developed a passion for working with children and families in the health care setting. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family and traveling to new places.

A DYNAMIC DUO Kim Bertram and Helen Stacy started the “Grab and Go” breakfast program to provide a quick and convenient morning meal for RMHC families.

im Bertram and her family have been friendly faces volunteering their time and talents in a variety of ways at the Ronald McDonald Houses for more than twenty years. In 1983, when Kim and her husband Topper’s child Tony was born, they spent many days and nights at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center (now SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital) while Tony received treatment and care. Although they were not able to utilize the Ronald McDonald House at the time, they definitely grew to understand its importance. This combined with their wish to pay back some of the kindness they received from the nurses and physicians at Cardinal Glennon led the Bertram family to volunteer for RMHC. “RMHC supports the hospitals by taking care of the parents, so that the nurses and staff at the hospital can focus on the kids,” says Kim. Before retiring from her career as a teacher and principal, Kim, along with her husband and her mother, Helen Stacy, began researching ways they could help our organization. Thanks to her love of cooking and memories of how the mornings can be a particularly stressful time

for a family with a child in the hospital, she came up with the idea of the “Grab and Go” breakfast. “We wanted a small, deliberate act we knew we could maintain,” says Kim. Together, she and Helen visit our Park Avenue House twice a month and prepare an assortment of fresh food, including: sausage and egg biscuits, fruit cups, muffins, boiled eggs and cinnamon rolls, all of which are transportable and microwavable so that they can be eaten on-the-go or at the hospital. “Having a partner makes it possible,” emphasizes Kim. “We have a great time just cooking and talking.” Kim’s son Tony, now a teacher himself, also joins them for the breakfast program when his work schedule allows. “It’s super fun when our son goes in to volunteer with us; it makes it really feel full circle,” says Kim. You can find Kim and Helen at the Park Avenue House every second and fourth Wednesday, putting smiles on the faces of our guest families. One morning, they overheard a mother say, “It’s Grab and Go breakfast day! I love Grab and Go breakfast!” which Kim says made her heart so happy. “Every single time we leave, we leave feeling good about what we just did,” Kim says, when asked about her favorite aspect of volunteering. “We get to leave them with a kind word and maybe something to eat. We understand that our breakfast program doesn’t change the medical challenges faced by resident families, but it, hopefully, makes some of the days they spend here a little easier.” To those thinking of volunteering Kim says, “Don’t assume you have nothing to offer. If you are curious or have an idea just call. Come in and have a conversation, spur an idea - you will find that you’re needed.” Here at RMHC, we couldn’t be more appreciative of Kim and Helen’s commitment to providing our guest families with the best home-away-from-home possible. n March 21, 2018, RMHC St. Louis hosted a grand opening for the Ronald McDonald Family Room inside the new tower of St. Louis Children’s Hospital! St. Louis Children’s Hospital President, Joan Magruder, along with RMHC Board Member Dr. Mary Michaeleen Cradock and RMHC Board Chair, Steve Pelch, cut the ribbon, welcoming guest families to this beautiful space. Totaling nearly 3,000 square feet, the Family Room offers a kitchen, dining area, quiet room with comfortable recliners, a TV room, a play room, laundry facilities, showers, four computer stations and more. It will serve approximately 5,000 additional local and out-of-town families each year. We are extremely grateful to Emerson and St. Louis Children’s Hopsital, whose generous contributions made this expansion possible. The original Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, which opened in 2007, is undergoing renovations thanks to a gift from Ameren and will reopen in Summer 2018 to serve families of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) patients. HOW IT WORKS The concept is simple. You make a donation using cash, marketable securities or other assets, and we, in turn, pay you a fixed amount for life. With this type of gift, you can feel secure knowing you can count on receiving stable payments for as long as you live. And now, if you make your gift on or after July 1, the gift annuity rates will be higher than they have been in over six years. AN EXAMPLE OF HOW YOU MAY BENEFIT: Under the current rate schedule, Barbara, 72, transfers $25,000 in exchange for a charitable gift annuity. She will receive annual payments of $1,350, a rate of 5.4 percent. Instead, if Barbara waits to make her gift on or after the new rate schedule is in place on July 1, the same gift amount will provide

$1,450 in annual payments, reflecting a 5.8 percent rate. That’s a payout rate increase of approximately 7.4 percent. JACOB’S

GENEROSITY Thirteen years after his family called the Ronald McDonald House “home,” Jacob Moak returned to give back in a huge way.

n July 2005, Jamie and Paul Moak welcomed their first child, Jacob, into the world nearly two months early. Jacob was born with multiple complications and was transferred by ambulance to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, two hours away from their hometown of West Frankfort, Illinois. Over the next two months and two days, Jacob remained in the hospital, enduring surgery and battling an infection. It was a terrifying time for Jamie and Paul, but thankfully, they were able to stay just minutes away at the Ronald McDonald House on Park Avenue. Now, 13 years later, Jamie recalls how thankful she was to be so close to Jacob, to not be burdened financially, and for the home-cooked meals they received while at the House. “It meant the world to us,” says Jamie. “I really think he did as well as he did because we were able to be there with him all the time.” After overcoming many obstacles, Jacob is now a happy, healthy 12-year-old. He is currently in the seventh grade and just recently celebrated his confirmation, which included a service project. Knowing that it had been a place of comfort to his parents after he was born, Jacob chose to collect donations and Wish List items for Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. To encourage participation, Jacob made flyers and set-up a donation box at his church for the Wish List items. “I thought it would be a nice thing to do,” says Jacob. And we couldn’t agree more! Altogether,

2017 HEART & SOLE AWARD

Jamie and Josh Koritz accepted the 2017 Heart & Sole Award, presented by RMHC St. Louis’ 2017 Board Chairperson, Steve Pelch, and President, Dan Harbaugh, last December.

n December 2017, Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis presented Dynamic Vending with the annual Heart & Sole Award. The Heart & Sole Award was created in 2005 to honor Coldwell Banker Gundaker for its more than 20-year commitment to our organization. Each year, RMHC St. Louis honors a new company that emulates Coldwell Banker

Gundaker’s commitment and generosity. Dynamic Vending’s support began in 2008 when Jamie Koritz, a volunteer at our Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, realized a need: keeping the room supplied with snacks for our guests. Her husband, Josh, who owns Dynamic Vending, made a commitment to donating 600 bags of chips per week to the Ronald McDonald Family Room program. But Dynamic Vending’s support does not stop there. In 2014, when bank fees for coin-counting were becoming costprohibitive for our charity, Dynamic Vending offered to donate the coin-counting services for our McDonald’s Donation Box program, saving RMHC St. Louis nearly $15,000 per year. Today, Dynamic Vending continues to play a vital role in the success of our Ronald McDonald Family Room and Donation Box programs, which has helped our organization save tens of thousands of dollars over the last 10 years. “We are extremely thankful for Dynamic Vending’s incredible partnership over the past decade,” says Dan Harbaugh, RMHC St. Louis President. “We are proud to recognize them with the 2017 Heart and Sole Award.” ■ Heartbeat • Spring/Summer 2018
