Letter from thE chairperson I never imagined that when I joined the Audit Committee of this great organization back in 2005 that 10 years later I would have the honor of being the 2015-2016 Board Chair. Since 2005, we have opened three Family Rooms, one new House, partnered to provide the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, and finished a major renovation at our West Pine House! This upcoming year, we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Annual DTZ/RMH Golf Tournament and Dinner Auction and the 15th Annual Kids & Clays Tournament and Dinner Auction. These amazing events provide over $1 million each year toward our operating budget. Last year, they allowed us to serve 1,756 families in our Houses and 12,500 families in our Family Rooms. In January, we launched our newly redesigned website, which we encourage you to visit. The website, which can now be viewed on tablets and smartphones, is a great place to find out more about our upcoming events

and various ways to get involved with our organization. We are also in the process of evaluating our renovation needs at our Park Avenue House, so stay tuned for updates! I recently had the pleasure of introducing our 2015 Cornerstone Society Award Winners — amazing people and organizations that give tirelessly to RMHC — at our 3rd Annual Cornerstone Society Celebration. With more than 300 of our largest donors celebrating our mission, it was truly an amazing event. In just a couple weeks, we will be celebrating with our volunteers, a fantastic group of dedicated individuals, without whom we wouldn’t be able to staff our Houses and Family Rooms. These very special people are our front line of contact with families, and we treasure all that they do. And I can’t end without mentioning the amazing staff we are blessed with. Our staff have such large hearts and come to work each day ready to serve our families and make their stay as comfortable as possible. I am proud to work with our donors, volunteers and staff to make RMHC a “home-away-from-home” for so many families. Have a great 2015! Sincerely,

meet felicia malter Felicia Malter is a CPA and Partner at RubinBrown LLP in the Assurance Services Department. She has been with RubinBrown since August 2003. Prior to joining RubinBrown, she was with Ernst & Young LLP for approximately nine years in both the St. Louis and New York offices. Felicia also spent a year and a half at The Walt Disney Company (Burbank, California) in the Management Audit department. Felicia attended Indiana University and then returned to St. Louis before leaving to work on both coasts. Felicia has been married to her husband, Steve, since 2002 and they have two girls, Sarah (10) and Emma (8). When she’s not spending time with her family, Felicia enjoys reading.

meet yordanis with just one word, a four-year-old boy from the dominican republic has captured our hearts The evening of August 16, 2013 began like any other evening for two-year-old Yordanis de la Cruz and his grandmother Lourdes Caraballo. At their home in La Romana, Dominican Republic, Yordanis was playing with his toys while his grandmother cooked dinner for the family. As Lourdes was cooking, she noticed that something was wrong. Yordanis was on the floor struggling to breathe, quickly making this evening, and the months to come, anything but typical. As Yordanis struggled to breathe, his grandmother noticed that he had taken a drink from a can containing toxic oven-cleaning solution. She immediately took Yordanis in her arms and ran outside yelling for help. A neighbor transported Yordanis to a nearby hospital on his motorcycle, as there were no ambulances near the town. With his esophagus badly burned and unable to swallow, Yordanis remained in the hospital for 24 days 3 Heartbeat • Spring/Summer 2015

before being sent home. Doctors told his grandmother that he needed to be treated at a private clinic – something their family could not afford. Fearing for her grandson’s life, Lourdes brought Yordanis to a private clinic, offering the papers to her house as payment. Nearly two months after the accident, doctors at the private clinic finally inserted the feeding tube that Yordanis desperately needed to survive. Eventually it was determined that Yordanis would need more specialized treatment than local hospitals and clinics could provide. That’s when a family member reached out to Major League Baseball player Edwin Encarnacion, who grew up in the same town where Yordanis’ family lived. Edwin Encarnacion then reached out to his friend Albert Pujols, who happened to be visiting the Dominican Republic at the time. Soon after meeting Yordanis, the Pujols Family Foundation

brought Yordanis to St. Louis with the help of World Pediatric Project, an organization that helps over 80 children travel to the U.S. each year for medical treatment. When he arrived in St. Louis in February 2014, Yordanis began his long journey to healing with both the ENT and General Surgery teams at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Over the past year, Yordanis and his grandmother, as well as his aunt, have found a “home-away-from-home” at the West County Ronald McDonald House. RMHC provides a place for Yordanis and Lourdes to stay, and the World Pediatric Project provides daily support, including transportation to and from the hospital, translators to ease communication, and other services, such as coordinating volunteers to take them to church and other outings around the city. According to Lourdes, the House has been a comfortable place to stay while her grandson has undergone numerous reconstructive surgeries. Yordanis, now four years old, seems to agree. While his favorite part of the House is the playroom, he still manages to make the entire RMH his own. Often, Yordanis can be found answering the door for guests, making new friends, and socializing with the other families and staff. However, for a long time, communicating was difficult because his injuries left him unable to speak. “When he’s thrown tantrums, it’s been heartbreaking,” says Matt Lauer, Senior Manager, House Operations. “He couldn’t make a peep, shout at his grandmother, or cry.” In fact, no one had ever heard Yordanis’ voice at the Ronald McDonald House until recently, when something miraculous happened in January 2015. Yordanis stopped by the front desk to tell his RMHC friends, “Hola!” It was a magical moment more than a year in the making. Now Yordanis’ voice can be heard throughout the House, as he continues to recover alongside his family at The House that Love Built. ■

magine packing up your life into boxes and moving to an unknown city. Settling in and making friends takes time; your new city feels like a “home-away-from-home” as you adjust. Soon after Carol Fruend and her husband moved from St. Louis to Galveston, Texas, she rang the doorbell of the Ronald McDonald House, and it changed her life forever. Carol started volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House in Galveston, helping in any way she could. The House helped her feel more at home in her new locale, especially during the holiday season. The holidays are extremely difficult for families who have sick children, as the special traditions they usually share are swapped for hospital rooms and mounting medical bills. In Galveston, Carol and several volunteers left bags of goodies outside

the door of each family’s room so they could still experience the magic and cheer of the holiday season. When Carol and her husband moved back to St. Louis, she had the perfect idea to help bring holiday cheer to families staying at the Ronald McDonald Houses in St. Louis - a place where families could choose gifts for their family members. Twelve years ago, “Mrs. Claus’ Closet” was brought to life in a small, closet-like space at the Park Avenue House. The creation of this magical workshop was a group effort by Carol, her wonderful friends and House volunteers, Pat Schumacher, Doylene Wichlenski, Sue Creech, and many others. Today, the McGift Shoppe, which now fills the West Pine Conference Room for the entire month of December, is a beloved tradition for our guest families, RMHC volunteers and staff, and members of the community.

The McGift Shoppe is a place where families staying at one of our Houses can shop for their loved ones during the month of December, freeof-charge. The holiday workshop, which helps take the stress of holiday shopping off of families, is overflowing with gifts for all ages. Every item in the McGift Shoppe has been donated, and the shop itself is staffed by caring volunteers, like Carol. “The McGift Shoppe is magical,” says Carol. “It helps put a smile on the faces of families going through an extremely difficult time, and that is why I do it.” The ringing of a doorbell has “blossomed into a huge, positive blessing” for Carol. We can’t thank Carol and her thoughtful friends enough for the kindness and longtime support they have shown The House that Love Built. ■

Sometimes the Simple Things Mean the Most

mber Walsh’s connection to our organization A began in 1995 when she pledged Alpha Delta Pi, a sorority that has adopted RMHC as its philanthropy.

Nearly 20 years later, as a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Alumnae Association, Amber’s support continues. “Everyone can understand the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities,” she says. “You never doubt its value.” In 2009, Amber began coordinating a group of volunteers from the Alpha Delta Pi Alumnae Association. Every Sunday, from 9 a.m. to noon, the group volunteers at the Ronald McDonald Family Room inside of Mercy Children’s Hospital.

Although Sunday mornings can be a slow time in the Family Room, Amber enjoys the freedom it gives her to connect with the families. “There’s not a lot of opportunity to do basic things for people in everyday life,” she explains. Pouring parents a cup of coffee or helping with their laundry allows families the extra time they need with their child. According to Amber, this simple yet humbling type of service is one of the best parts of volunteering. In addition to donating her time in the Family Room, Amber and the Alpha Delta Pi Alumnae Association help in a variety of other ways. Last year, the group participated in a spring cleaning day at the West County Ronald McDonald House. They also hosted a holiday auction and purchased two new microwaves for the Family Rooms. According to Amber, volunteering for RMHC helps her appreciate the blessing of a healthy family. “After a shift at the Family Room, I definitely hug my kids more,” she says. Despite juggling a busy life of raising children and continuing her career as an attorney, Amber remains a committed volunteer. “To me that’s amazing,” says Judy Shuler, Director, Family Room Program. “Her commitment is above and beyond.” On behalf of the families we serve, we couldn’t be more grateful to Amber and the Alpha Delta Pi Alumnae Association for their hard work and support!

Our fundraising events, service projects, membership meetings and social outings are filled with dynamic, dedicated young professionals who want to make a difference in the lives of children and families – and our efforts are paying off. In our first two years, we’ve raised $35,000 and provided hundreds of service hours for Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. Karen Baer serves as Senior Vice President, Director of Financial Reporting & Analysis, for Wells Fargo Advisors, where she is responsible for financial planning and management reporting for the national organization.

Joe Kahn, M.D., has been President of Mercy Kids since 2012. From 1980 to 2012, Joe practiced primary care pediatrics. He also served as Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Mercy Children’s Hospital from 2007 to 2012, when the West County House was opened.

ince March 2013, RMHC St. Louis has partnered with Eye Care Charity of Mid‐ America to operate the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. This mobile vision clinic travels to schools and social service agencies throughout the St. Louis area and beyond, delivering comprehensive eye exams and on‐ the‐spot prescription glasses free of charge to underprivileged children. In addition to correcting their vision, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile empowers children to succeed in the classroom and enables early diagnosis of other eye conditions. After working as the Special Events Assistant for two years, Abby is now returning to the RMHC St. Louis team as the Events Coordinator. Three of her favorite things include cats, St. Louis Cardinals baseball and crossing things off of her bucket list.

Crista is the Communications Assistant at Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. She became involved with The House that Love Built in September 2013 as the PR & Marketing Intern and began working for the House full time in January 2015. Crista graduated from the Saint Louis University John Cook School of Business. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, attending ‘80s rock concerts, and cheering on her favorite NBA team, the Dallas Mavericks.

After working as the Family Room Assistant for two years, Jacob has taken on the role of House Manager at the Park Avenue Ronald McDonald House. In his free time Jacob enjoys spending time with his new wife Rachel, following the Cardinals, riding his bike and watching and performing improv comedy.

Courtney Fischer

Courtney is excited to have joined RMHC as the Assistant Family Room Manager in December 2014. Courtney graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in May with her bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies with an emphasis in Child Life. She previously worked with RMHC as a guest services staff member before taking on this new position. Courtney joins us with two years of nonprofit experience working as an executive board member for Camp Kesem Mizzou in Columbia, Missouri.

enny Ahal was first introduced to Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis in 1985, when friend Mark Giulvezan from Forest Hills Country Club asked him to play in our organization’s first annual golf tournament fundraiser. A couple years later, Denny’s team took first place, and in 1990 he began to donate his time to RMHC as a member of the Golf Tournament Committee. In 1993, after serving on the committee for a few years, Denny became Chair of the entire event. Faced with the task of organizing a fairly new event and having encountered several obstacles along the way, Denny decided it would be his first and final year in this leadership role. However, hearing a guest family share their story and appreciation for the Ronald McDonald House during the dinner auction changed everything for Denny. “It just tugged at my heart,” he says. “I knew I would keep doing whatever I could to help.” Denny continued to serve as the Golf Tournament Committee Chair for 19 years. During this time, Denny,

with the help of a dedicated committee, made numerous improvements to the event. By adding a morning round of golf, more participants could register, and more money could be raised. Denny’s wife, Karen, streamlined the registration process to make it more efficient. At the suggestion of Adam Jokish, the auctioneer, the Sponsor-A-Family portion of the dinner auction was moved up, allowing participants to raise their paddles to donate to RMHC directly before purchasing auction items. All of these changes, combined with Denny’s exceptional commitment, contributed to the continued overall success of the event. Now in its 30th year, the Ronald McDonald House Golf Tournament and Dinner Auction is one of St. Louis’ premier golf fundraisers. The list of Denny’s accomplishments during his time as Chair goes on and on. To honor these outstanding contributions, RMHC created the Denny Ahal Award in 2002. Every year, this honor is bestowed upon an individual that exemplifies a similar dedication to the event. The Ahals’ impact on RMHC does not end with the Golf Tournament. Their concrete construction company was involved in the construction of the Park Avenue Ronald McDonald House in 1996 and the West County Ronald McDonald House in 2010. In addition, Denny and Karen are Founding Members of the Cornerstone Society, which honors our organization’s most generous donors. Although they have contributed in a multitude of ways, the Ahals agree wholeheartedly that hearing from the families the House has helped has been the best part of supporting RMHC. A close second has been witnessing an incredible network of RMHC supporters, many of whom have become close friends over the years, open their hearts to give. Thank you, Denny and Karen, for your many years of dedication and for providing a “home-away-from-home” for countless families in need. We could not be more grateful for all that you have done and continue to do. ■

J.S. Express with the Heart and Sole Award. J.S. Express provides on-demand delivery services throughout the Midwest and has been supporting the RMHC mission for more than 20 years. The Heart and Sole Award was created in 2005 to honor Coldwell Banker Gundaker in recognition of its more than 20-year commitment to RMHC St. Louis. Each year, our organization honors a new company that emulates Coldwell Banker Gundaker’s long-term commitment and generosity. J.S. Express’ involvement with Ronald McDonald

House Charities of St. Louis began in 1994 at the RMHC Charity Golf Tournament. Shortly afterward, the company’s relationship with Ronald McDonald House grew when it committed to providing local courier services for the organization. More than 20 years later, J.S. Express is still providing services 365 days a year, for all three Ronald McDonald Houses and Family Rooms, free of charge. The core service J.S. Express provides allows items to move quickly and efficiently between Houses, Family Rooms, and volunteer committee members. The company’s services have also ensured the meeting of deadlines with important documents or grant applications and have even allowed donated items to arrive safely into the hands of an RMHC family or child. In addition to its courier services, J.S. Express has also donated its other services throughout the years. The company has willingly provided its warehousing storage services on several occasions, which was crucial during the construction of the West County Ronald McDonald House in 2010. The company also frequently finds time to participate in the Family Dinner Program, further supporting the RMHC St. Louis mission. “J.S. Our friends at Mercy Hospital hosted an enormous Wish List drive for our Houses and Family Rooms. Together, they collected more than 15,500 items! Thank you, Mercy, for your amazing partnership with RMHC!

Dillard’s recently presented RMHC St. Louis with a check for more than $14,000, the proceeds from the 2014 Southern Living Christmas Cookbook fundraiser. This money was collected by all five St. Louis-area Dillard’s stores.

True Media hosted a weekly “Jeans Day” to benefit RMHC St. Louis. Employees donated $5 each Friday in exchange for wearing jeans to work. Together they collected $4,000 for The House that Love Built!

Many thanks to Aspect Professional Services for hosting a “Red Wagon Toy Drive” for RMHC. These generous donations helped make the holiday season a little brighter for seriously ill children and their families!
