ST. LOUIS
LETTER
FROM THE CHAIRMAN What a pleasure, privilege and honor it has been to serve as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Ronald McDonald House Charities® of St. Louis. I have been leading corporate operations for many years, but when life offers an opportunity to lead a family-centered program like RMHC, you gain an insight as well as an appreciation for the dedication and commitment of so many people. Throughout my many years at RMHC, I have been blessed to work with some of the best leaders in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. Board and Committee members offer their professional expertise and guidance to the programs and operations. The 28 staff members are extremely qualified and very professional. However, when I reflect that just 28 staff members serve more than 8,000 people annually in three Ronald McDonald Houses, eight long-term apartments, and three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, I am amazed. RMHC is a great steward of its donors’ contributions. As an organization, they are able to accomplish this because of the 1,200 dedicated volunteers and financial generosity of so many individuals, organizations and corporations. I proudly submit the 2012 Annual Report as a reflection of the accountability of Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. However, these financials are only a part of the story. Every day, the lives of families and children are touched by a mission that provides a “home-away-from-home.” This mission is unique in its services and one to which we have an obligation to respond. I thank everyone who responded in 2012. Larry Carrico

MEET OUR NOAH JAMES, 16
ALEC AND BRODY BARNFIELD, 9 MONTHS
HUDSON COHN, 3 MONTHS
HEROES
The James family stayed at our long-term apartments on West Pine for several months in the summer of 2012 while their teenage son, Noah, recovered from a lung transplant. Now, the James family is back in their hometown of Boonville, Indiana, and Noah is actively participating on his high school’s swim team. In June 2012, Lisa and Marty Barnfield’s triplet boys — Alec, Brody and Cale — were born at just 24 weeks, weighing 1.5 pounds each. Sadly, just four days after he was born, Cale passed away. Alec and Brody spent more than six months in the NICU, undergoing surgeries and other serious procedures. During that time, Lisa and Marty stayed just blocks away from the hospital at the Ronald McDonald House. When they had to return to their hometown of Puxico, Missouri, for work, Lisa’s parents, Larry and Shirley Crank, moved into the RMH to be near the boys. The Barnfields finally took their boys home in January 2013. Megan Cohn delivered her second child, Hudson, on December 26, 2012, nearly three months before her due date. The Ronald McDonald House became “home” to Megan and her husband, Matthew, for almost four months while Hudson was in the NICU. “I can’t even imagine not having this place,” she says. “There is no way we could afford a hotel, so I would have to stay at the hospital 24 hours a day.”

LETTER FROM
THE PRESIDENT As I begin my 20th year with Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis, you might think that my job is routine. The fact is every year there are new and exciting adventures. RMHC St. Louis serves more than 8,000 families and children every year. We have grown from one House to three Houses, from no Family Rooms to three Family Rooms. In 2012, our plans for a Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, to be launched in 2013, were solidified. Our Board of Directors and community leaders have benefited this mission in a way that is personally inspiring to me. After all, those daily activities that I have the privilege and honor to conduct are never routine when you know you are helping families and children at a time when their lives have unraveled. It is my personal commitment to begin my third decade at Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis with the same joy and dedication that I began with 20 years ago. Thank you, on behalf of the families and children, for providing comfort, care and a “home-away-from home” for families of seriously ill children. Dan Harbaugh

ABOUT RMHC ST. LOUIS There are three Ronald McDonald Houses® in St. Louis. Our first House was built on West Pine Blvd. near St. Louis Children’s Hospital in 1981. In 1996, we opened a second House on Park Ave. near SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. In 2003, eight long-term apartments were added, adjacent to the West Pine House. In 2010, RMHC St. Louis opened its third Ronald McDonald House — and the 300th in the world — on the campus of Mercy Children’s Hospital. The three Houses provide a “home-away-from-home” for up to 59 families every night of the year. RMHC St. Louis also operates three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms®, which are located inside Mercy Children’s Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Each of these rooms serves as an “oasis within the hospital,” offering both local and out-of-town families the essential comforts of home, including hot showers, laundry facilities, snacks, television, Internet access and a quiet place to relax. More than 80 families a day find comfort and care in our three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, which are open 12 hours a day, 365 days a year, and staffed entirely by volunteers.
