In April 2019, we found out we were expecting and due in December. Being first time parents, we were scared but excited! We had experienced a perfect pregnancy up until Labor Day when I (Kasey) woke up to pains of an infection. A couple days later, I went to my doctor and found that the infection had caused me to go into preterm labor. I was just under 25 weeks along so we were taken by ambulance to Mercy Springfield. We chose Mercy because we knew regardless of what happened, we were going to need to stay somewhere, and we liked that the Ronald McDonald House was located inside the hospital.
Almost 3 days later on September 7th, at 25 weeks and 2 days, our son, Dawson Raye Trantham, was born via emergency c-section. I spent a night in ICU and then once discharged from recovery, we got settled in at the Ronald McDonald House. Immediately, we felt comforted by the staff and the feeling of home it gave. It never felt like we were in a hotel and that meant so much to us. We stayed 106 days and in those days, we made friends that became family, met other families that had used the House before, and gained a respect for the organization that you cannot truly form until you stay there. What we appreciated most was the genuine care that the staff felt for us as well as the meals provided in the evenings, and use of the area. We were discharged from the NICU on December 22nd. It was such a bittersweet feeling leaving Mercy and the Ronald McDonald House. It had become our home and comfort in the hardest time of our life. Now, a year later, we are all doing well and Dawson is completely healthy and living his best life! We are forever grateful for the Ronald McDonald House and plan to serve them in the future to be able to connect with families walking a similar journey we did.
