BEATS SPRING 2020

To Our Amazing Volunteers

As our staff prepared this special Spring issue of Heart Beats, our emotions were overwhelmed in thinking about how much we’ve missed all of you. You’ve been the HEART of our programs for more than 32 years and we can’t wait for the day when each of you returns to the Ronald McDonald Houses and Tooth Truck. It was heartbreaking to have to cancel our Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner on April 28. We are part of an amazing network of Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles all over the world, with exemplary support and leadership from RMHC Global. We not only received a generous grant to assist our programs with expenses due to COVID-19, RMHC Global assembled a team of experts to help us keep our families, patients, volunteers and staff as safe as possible as we continue to fulfill our mission in different ways than we did a few short months ago. Most of you are aware we’ve been providing hotel rooms, individual meals and Welcome Bags to families who would usually stay at our Houses. Although we haven’t been able to provide dental treatment, the Healthy Smiles Academy has been able to continue its mission in a unique way as well (see inside). Our Family Dinner Groups have been truly amazing in making these individual meals possible, as well as so many in our community who have donated funds for these unbudgeted expenses. We’ve been asked by so many people when we will reopen the Tooth Truck and Houses, and when volunteers may return. First and foremost, we will always lead with safety. Unfortunately, the return of on-site volunteers and Family Dinner Groups is still weeks away for the Houses and months away for the Tooth Truck. With this in mind, our team will be in touch with opportunities to continue your volunteerism without having to do so in person; allowing us to keep our families, patients and staff as self-contained as possible and safe from the virus. We should know more in July about the return of Ronald McDonald House volunteers, which will be in phases. Tooth Truck and Healthy Smiles Academy volunteers will focus on off-site projects throughout 2020. Over the next several weeks, volunteer opportunities will evolve as we open our programs and experience a new normal. You’ll be hearing from us! We encourage you to learn more about our path forward in the pages ahead. We all wish you good health and safety, and look forward to talking soon! Yours in partnership,

Bonnie Keller President & CEO The Tooth Truck, Inc. RMHC of the Ozarks, Inc.

Our Path Forward The Tooth Truck

(our Ronald McDonald Care MobileÂŽ) Dr. Sarah and Mindy have worked for several weeks on a reopening plan for the Tooth Truck that meets or exceeds the standards of the Missouri State Dental Board and ADA. The Tooth Truck Board has reviewed and approved the plan, as has RMHC Global. We were thrilled to learn on May 29 that the Tooth Truck is approved to reopen, seeing patients the following week. As you can imagine, the operation has changed dramatically with increased PPE and only one patient on the Truck at a time. With each site, processes are developed to ensure the highest level of safety in bringing children to the Tooth Truck for treatment and back to their classrooms or nonprofit site, with as few people involved as possible. We look forward to sharing our progress with you as we learn from our experience helping patients in the time of COVID-19.

Ronald McDonald House Program Our House Program Managers, Laura and Larry, have also created reopening plans for the Ronald McDonald Houses, using the carefully-created guidelines and resources from RMHC Global and working in partnership with local hospitals and RMHC staff. Those plans were approved by the RMHC Board of Directors in late May, scheduled for review by RMHC Global the first week of June and once approved, will be implemented in 4 phases. Phases 1 and 2 will each allow a specific number of families to check into the Houses during a 1 to 3-day period and no other families will be allowed to check in for two weeks. This keeps the environment consistent and safe with all new practices in place. The common areas will be closed and dinner will be provided at the NICU or delivered to individual rooms. Snacks will be readily available to families, who will be required to wear masks when outside of their rooms and participate in daily screening and sanitation procedures. We will continue to provide hotel rooms and meals to additional families who are not able to benefit from the Houses during these 2 twoweek periods. Phase 3 will allow for an increased number of families during a specific 28-day period and we may start introducing low-risk volunteers into the Houses. By Phase 4, which is 2 months into our official reopening, we will be able to use 100% of the House and we will reintroduce additional volunteers in numbers that support social distancing and comply with local orders. As with all activities in our world today, our reopening plans will be influenced by the status of COVID-19 in our community. With everyone’s grace and patience, our organization will move through these challenging times with the ultimate goal of continuing to fulfill our mission in creative and dedicated ways.

News from our RMHC Events Team

Our events team has been working vigilantly to ensure our organization is doing everything we can to secure funds and experiences normally provided by our fundraising events. Here are a few updates.

Sertoma GRIN IRON CLASSIC As most of you know, we regretfully had to cancel the 19th Annual Sertoma GRIN IRON CLASIC (GIC) due to COVID-19. We are very fortunate to have sponsors that want to support the Tooth Truck whether the game was held or not, including Heart of the Ozarks Sertoma Club, the Greater Springfield Dental Society, Mediacom, and Youngblood Auto Group.

Despite the cancellation, the accomplished graduated seniors of our East and West GIC teams were recognized through a special MC22 “From the Studio” Show hosted by Corey Riggs at 7:00 pm on Friday, June 5 (the scheduled day of the GIC), followed by a special broadcast of the 2019 GIC. In addition, an electronic GRIN IRON CLASSIC event program featuring all player bios and

photos, as well as our generous sponsors and advertisers, is available on our website https://rmhcozarks.org/ events/grin-iron-classic/. A link to the “From the Studio” show may be also be accessed on our website.

Red Shoe Gala With the uncertainty of today’s world, the 6th Annual Red Shoe Gala will be held…we are just unsure at this time in what format! We are moving forward planning an in-person event on October 16, 2020; but we are preparing for a virtual gala experience in the instance we are not able to hold an in-person event. We will keep you posted as details unfold! The events team thanks each and every one of you for your support and understanding during this time! We are so excited to get back up and running and can’t wait to see every one of you!

Around the Houses What Have We Been Doing? Laura Winstead, Cox House Program Manager We’ve been working hard to get the Cox House ready for families and learning lots of new things along the way. The Family Care Managers have done a great job of deep cleaning, painting, and repairing the House in preparation of re-opening. One thing is for sure, the House just doesn’t feel the same without our volunteers. In working here I’ve gained another family in all of you, and I can’t wait until we can spend time together serving our families!

Larry Chainey, Mercy House Program Manager The House at Mercy Kids has not felt the same without our volunteers and guests. Despite missing the people we serve and serve with, our team has been working hard to prepare the House for our future guests. Cleaning, disinfecting, rearranging and organizing have been the primary focus of our staff this past month. The House feels refreshed ready to be filled with people again, when it’s safe to do so – and with a new look in each room! We have purchased new bed comforters for our guest rooms and we hope they will ensure a cozier night’s rest for our future guests. Additionally, our partners at Mercy Hospital have provided a great deal of support for our House over the past couple of months. The Mercy Maintenance Department has come in to help us complete several projects around the House. Projects such as; cleaning out air vents, touching up paint along the walls and doors, checking our plumbing and drains, replacing ceiling tiles and several other tasks. Mercy Environmental Services Department came in to thoroughly clean our floors, rugs and the carpet in the Playroom. The House certainly looks and feels a lot better thanks to the effort of these men and women. Thanks Mercy Hospital! Lastly, over the past couple months, our team at Mercy Kids has continued to deliver our mission to provide a “home-away-from-home” for the families we have the privilege to serve. We are eagerly anticipating the time when we can welcome families and our volunteers back into the House. Until that time, we hope everyone is healthy, happy and safe. Here are Kennedy (FCM) and Megan (LCSW) about to deliver care bags to families in the NICU

Lacey McKeever, Mercy House Associate Program Manager It has definitely been a weird change of pace at the Mercy House, with no families or volunteers! I have been spending my time re-organizing, updating manuals, getting a lot of House projects done with the help of our FCM’s and Mercy Maintenance (you should see the storage closet!) and putting together “Care Bags” for our NICU, PICU, and PEDs families we would normally serve. I also have been working from home a lot, with my husband Matthew and my pup Lucy. My “office” usually consists of my laptop and my yellow chair – as Matthew uses the kitchen table and Lucy takes up the whole couch. What I have really enjoyed is getting to take my “office”” outside on nice days and enjoy the sun (which is a nice change in scenery from our little hospital-based House!) But, I miss all of you so dearly and I am so excited to catch up with you all. We always say the Houses are so different without all of our volunteers, and it could not be truer today. Looking forward to the day you all walk through our doors again!

Heather Hyde, Cox House Associate Program Manager With no families or volunteers around the House, I’ve stayed busy in a new way! During this time, I’ve updated several manuals, listened to many webinars on all things volunteer related, written many acknowledgements (which could never compare to Amy’s talent – we miss your monthly acknowledgements!) and much more. These days I split my time between my “home office” (my kitchen table) and the House. Personally, I’ve enjoyed this time that has forced me to live life at a slower place and one of my favorite things has been lunch walks with my new “coworkers” (Winston, my fur baby and Austin, my husband)! Things have certainly been different; however, I’m looking forward to the day we have families and volunteers filling our House again. I miss you all, virtual hugs!

What Have We Been Doing?

Tooth Truck Team The Tooth Truck team has been busy, just not in our usual way. While we are saddened to not have the opportunity to interact with patients and volunteers at this time, we have been focused on preparing for future patient care, organizing and deep cleaning the Truck, and even helping with projects at the Houses. Tooth Truck staff members help with some Dr. Sarah stays on top of dental cleaning projects at the Mercy House. webinars and other sources providing relevant information for our program. We have also invested in additional protective supplies such as gloves, masks, and face shields so we will be ready when it is safe to start seeing patients again. Things are certainly going to be a little different when we start back but our top priority is ensuring the Tooth Truck still has the kid-friendly, welcoming feel to it. We are looking forward to the day when we can open our door to both patients and volunteers!

Tamra Thomas, Healthy Smiles Academy Hello, everyone! The Healthy Smiles Academy has been busy meeting kids where they are—at home! We created a video for them to remind them to keep brushing every day. They got to see DecayAway and we talked about making healthy food choices. This was a fun way to virtually connect with them. Besides working on this, we have been “Zooming” with other students and keeping our sites updated on how we are moving forward. I sure miss everyone!

We would like to introduce you to our newest volunteer:

Pamela York The Tooth Truck is excited to welcome Pamela York to its program. Pam is a pre-dental student at Missouri State University who learned about the Tooth Truck through the Service Learning Program. She loves children and is thrilled to have the opportunity to help them through their dental experience on board the Tooth Truck.

In Between Launches By: Tamra Thomas

The Healthy Smiles Academy’s work with a brushing site doesn’t end with the initial launch. Our staff and volunteers provide ongoing oversight to ensure students have all the resources and support needed to practice good brushing habits.
