Cort was born December 2019,

three weeks early., and was placed in the NICU at Mercy for the first night to observe his breathing. Initially, they thought it should resolve itself in a few hours. However, upon further testing and evaluation over the next couple of days, it was apparent he had pneumonia and would need several days of antibiotics to breathe on his own. During this time, the Ronald McDonald House offered us a place to stay until we could take Cort home. It was such a blessing to be under the same roof as your sick child. The moment we arrived we were greeted by friendly, smiling people. We were given a tour and keys to a very comfortable room where we now had a place to unpack our clothes, do laundry, prepare warm meals, and also have an evening meal offered by caring volunteers. It was encouraging to be around other people who had been through similar experiences. All these things were kind. However, there was one gift the Ronald McDonald House gave us we are ever indebted to them for. Being 90 miles away from home, we were going to have to spend Christmas in the NICU. I could only imagine how disappointed my older boys would be. I remember feeling overwhelmed about all the logistics I needed to take care of now. However, the Ronald McDonald House gave us the gift of being together at Christmas with all our boys. Our 6 and 10-year-old sons just wanted to be with their little brother and have Christmas together. We woke up Christmas morning to find gifts had been placed outside our door for each family member. It was an overwhelming generosity by the Ronald McDonald House and surrounding community. We will always be grateful for Christmas 2019. It is the year we spent in the NICU with our newest addition. Our older boys say it was the best Christmas they have ever had. Their favorite memory was giving Cort his first bath. It wasn’t about the gifts, it was the opportunity to be together as a family and make good memories.
