Family Dinner Spotlight The Dinner Club Q: When did you start providing meals for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House?

A: We started serving meals this past February Q: How did you get involved with the Family Dinner Program?

A: One of our group members, Julia Kovacs, volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House near Cox South for about two years. Julia was interested in

helping with the Family Dinner Program, so she got all of us together to start serving meals.

We’ve all been friends since high school and have grown closer in college. We love getting the opportunity to do things like this together.

also nice to spend time doing something worthwhile with a group of close friends.

Q: Do you have any favorite memories?

A: Yes! One time we had a group of kids who were staying in the House begging us for brownies. So cute! We also thought we had somehow messed up a recipe for baked mac ‘n cheese, but thankfully everyone loved it!

Did you know that April is National Multiples Month? The 2013 Ronald McDonald House Annual Campaign featured a fun twist on Springfield’s TWO Ronald McDonald Houses by featuring TWO sets of twins in “Twice the Love!” In honor of National Multiples Month, we thought we would share some interesting facts about multiples!

• Between the House near Cox South and the House at Mercy Children’s Hospital, families of 217 sets of twins, two sets of triplets, and one set of quadruplets have been served since 1988. In 2013 alone, families of 22 sets of twins were served between both Houses.

• In 2013, the Tooth Truck served 12 sets of twins—repairing 24 cavities and placing 148 sealants on these kiddos.

• For parents of twins, they can expect to give 730 good night kisses in one year, 4,420 feedings/bottles in one year, and 4,534 diapers changed with 5,000 diaper wipes used in one year! That number only increases with triplets and more!

• In one year, twins will need 510 school lunches packed.

• While fraternal twins run in families, identical twins are a fluke of nature—even better, once you’ve had fraternal twins, you are three to four times more likely to have another set!

• For parents of triplets, they can expect to provide a combined 197 hours a week of care to their little bundles of joy. In theory, each parent will spend 98.5 of time with their triplets each week (out of 168 hours total). If you’d like to get 7 hours of sleep each night, that means you have an average of 2.5 hours each day for yourself…including eating, showering, and daily tasks!

Volunteer Spotlight Chandler Saner has been a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House at Mercy Children’s Hospital since September 2013. Her ties to the House go back much further than that. Chandler became acquainted with RMH through her aunt, Debbie Kinser, who serves as our Accounting Manager and Assistant to the President. When Chandler was young, she would come with Debbie to the House to volunteer periodically after school and over the summer. Ever since then, she has loved what RMH does for families and wants to be a continuing part of the mission.

Chandler’s favorite aspect of volunteering is the interaction with people. She loves being able

to talk with families and bring smiles to their faces. She always ends up with a smile of her own as well. She has discovered that it’s often the small things that impact people the most.

Her advice for others thinking about volunteering with RMH is: “Do it! At first, I didn’t know what to expect. I was hesitant to give up time that I could use for myself. But I found out that I actually love it! In fact, I started to volunteer more than I ever thought I would.” Her practical advice for potential volunteers is that they need to be willing to do anything. Chandler shares that she is not the most outgoing person, but volunteering with RMH has helped her become more social. She says, “I am not a

completely forward person now, but I am definitely not stuck in my shell anymore!” Her hobbies when she is not volunteering include reading, hanging out with friends and family, participating in activities with her youth group and classmates, going to movies and having Bible studies. Chandler has a true servant’s heart, and our staff and families are immensely grateful for her hard work! Thank you, Chandler!

Breaks Another Record!

TJ Slocum is a dedicated Ronald McDonald House volunteer and our “Share a Heart Champion!” TJ, along with his parents, Randy and Debbie, set their sights on a goal of raising $12,000 this year for the 21st annual Share a Heart Campaign. DRUM ROLL PLEASE … this team blew past that goal and raised an astounding $14,310.25! TJ adopted our Ronald McDonald Houses and Share a Heart Campaign as his personal mission for giving back to the “home away from home” that has given him and his family so much. “McTJ Night,” on February 4th in Marshfield, was a big success with nearly $1,000 raised. TJ also sold his heart out at the KGBX Women’s Show onFebruary 22nd, raising $622!

Since 2008, TJ has raised an amazing $46,777 for Ronald McDonald House!

We all know the age-old cliché about a picture being worth a thousand words, but what about a smile? On the Tooth Truck, we make it our job to help every little patient leave with a smile that they are proud of. By restoring a broken front tooth, we can boost a child’s confidence, self-esteem and pride. We have been able to see firsthand the impact this can have on a child’s schoolwork, classroom behavior and interactions with their friends, family and teachers. The collage above shows just a few of the patients that have come to us this past year. They came to us embarrassed to show their smiles, but left the Tooth Truck with ones they were most definitely not hiding.

One of our most enjoyable moments is watching a child literally skip off the Tooth Truck, stopping everyone along the way to show those their new smiles. I think you will agree that it’s not the picture, but the smiles in the picture that are worth a thousand words.

A chipped front tooth leaves a child extremely self-conscious and reluctant to smile. The Tooth Truck can make a forever impact on a child’s self-confidence by repairing a broken tooth. These children are no longer afraid to smile.

Cody is a recent graduate of Drury, where he studied Biology & Chemistry, and is preparing to start dental school at UMKC in the fall. All-Star Weekend It’s an ALL-STAR weekend on June

6th & 7th, 2014. The 13th Annual Sertoma GRIN IRON CLASSIC (all-star high school football game) and the 3rd Annual Sertoma GRIN ACTION CLASSIC (all-star high school volleyball tournament) will take place at Parkview High School in Springfield.

RMHC of the Ozarks and the All-Star Smiles Sertoma Club are hosting this “All-Star Weekend” featuring Southwest Missouri’s all-stars, who will all be graduated seniors. It all benefits the Tooth Truck! Volunteers are needed for both events, and we’d love for YOU to join us. Contact Brent Stock if you are interested in helping (417-875-3501).

Qualifications and Considerations for the Annual Awards to Recognize Excellence in Volunteerism The Board of Directors of the Ronald McDonald HouseÂŽ of the Ozarks proudly announced the formation of two annual awards to honor excellence in volunteerism at the Annual Volunteer Dinner on April 24, 1990.

With the permission of their families, these awards have been established and named in memory of two beloved Ronald McDonald House volunteers. The Barbara L. Appleby Award will be presented to the most deserving volunteer who contributes primarily to programs involving House Operations. The Loniel B. Ford Award will be presented to an individual who exemplifies volunteer efforts for the Ronald McDonald House within the community. Each year, the awards are presented at the Annual Volunteer Dinner.

The qualifications required to earn each award and the considerations that will be given to volunteer candidates have been developed according to the standards Loniel and Barbara practiced on a daily basis. These are detailed below.

The Barbara L. Appleby Award for Excellence in Volunteerism

1. Families are #1 Priority.

2. Attitude and Professionalism (Handles internal information and problems in a tactful and professional manner; refuses to discuss internal matters with those who are uninvolved; uses good self control; able to deal effectively with emergencies; strictly maintains confidentiality; uses good judgment.)

3. Dependability (Consistently works a three-hour shift once a week, with the exceptions of illness, vacations, and/or emergencies; gives adequate notice when absent, trying to fill shift with another qualified volunteer.)

4. Works a Minimum of (30) Three-Hour Shifts in the Preceding 12 Months 5. Above Average Work Skills (Prioritizes needs independently; has initiative to use volunteer time purposefully; has ability to use Blue Book; integrates self into tasks at hand.)

6. Demonstrates the Capacity to be a Team Player (Internalizes goals of the RMH.) 7. Understands and Adheres to RMH Philosophy, Rules, Regulations, Policies, and Procedures 8. Education (Attends RMH training/orientation sessions and meetings on a regular basis; furthers personal volunteer development by taking advantage of opportunities and seminars within the community.)

9. Serves as an Ambassador of the RMH to the Community (through phone and personal contacts) 10. Participates in Outside Projects (fundraisers, special events, etc.)

The Loniel B. Ford Award for Excellence in Volunteerism

1. Serves as an Ambassador of the RMH to the Community (Generates awareness of RMH as a result of efforts.)

2. Attitude and Professionalism (Handles internal information and problems in a tactful and professional manner; refuses to discuss internal matters with those who are uninvolved; uses good self control; able todeal effectively with emergencies; strictly maintains confidentiality; uses good judgment.)

3. Dependability (Follows through on commitments made for outside projects; gives adequate notice when absent, trying to fill responsibilities with another qualified volunteer.)

4. Contributes a Minimum of (100) Volunteer Hours to the RMH in the Preceding 12 Months 5. Above Average Work Skills (Utilizes personal qualities to contribute to fundraisers and special events; prioritizes needs and shows initiative to use volunteer time purposefully; is organized. The impact created and/or results of a volunteer’s efforts will be given priority consideration.)

6. Demonstrates the Capacity to be a Team Player (Internalizes goals of the RMH.) 7. Understands and Adheres to RMH Philosophy, Rules, Regulations, Policies, and Procedures 8. Education (Furthers personal volunteer development by taking advantage of opportunities and seminars within the community; attends RMH volunteer meetings on a regular basis.) (continued)

The Kevin D. Wallace Award for Excellence in Volunteerism

On April 29, 2003, the Board of Directors of The Tooth Truck, Inc. announced the formation of the Kevin D. Wallace Award for Excellence in Volunteerism. This award was presented to a Ronald McDonald Care Mobile volunteer for the first time at the 2004 Volunteer Dinner on April 27. This award was established in honor of Dr. Kevin Wallace in recognition of his commitment and dedication in bringing the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile to reality. The following criteria will be used in selecting the volunteer most deserving of this honor.

1. Tooth Truck Patients are #1 Priority.

2. Attitude and Professionalism (Handles internal information and problems in a tactful and professional manner; refuses to discuss internal matters with those who are uninvolved; uses good self control; able to deal effectively with emergencies; strictly maintains confidentiality; uses good judgment.)

3. Dependability (Consistently works each volunteer shift as scheduled, with the exceptions of illness, vacations, and/or emergencies; gives adequate notice when absent, trying to fill shift with another qualified volunteer.)

4. Works a Minimum of (20) Volunteer Shifts or 60 hours in the Preceding 12 Months 5. Above Average Work Skills (Prioritizes needs independently; has initiative to use volunteer time purposefully; integrates self into tasks at hand.)

6. Demonstrates the Capacity to be a Team Player (Internalizes goals of the Tooth Truck.)

7. Understands and Adheres to Tooth Truck Philosophy, Rules, Regulations, Policies, and Procedures 8. Education (Attends training/orientation sessions and meetings on a regular basis; furthers personal volunteer development by taking advantage of opportunities and seminars within the community.)

The Volunteer Recognition Committee is responsible for the evaluation and selection of the award recipients.

Each year we recognize three outstanding volunteers with the Barbara L. Appleby, Loniel B Ford, and Kevin D. Wallace Awards for Excellence in Volunteerism. This year we would like to recognize volunteers from the House and Tooth Truck who may not qualify for our established Annual Awards, but who are also deserving of recognition for their time, efforts, and dedication to our mission.

Outstanding Young Adult Award 1. Volunteer must be 25 years of age or younger.

2. Works a Minimum of 60 Hours in the Preceding 12 Months.

3. Attitude and Professionalism (Handles internal information and problems in a tactful and professional manner; refuses to discuss internal matters with those who are uninvolved; uses good self control; able to deal effectively with emergencies; strictly maintains confidentiality; uses good judgment.)

4. Dependability (Follows through on commitments made for regular volunteer shifts or outside projects; gives adequate notice when absent.)

5. Above Average Work Skills (Prioritizes needs independently; has initiative to use volunteer time purposefully; integrates self into tasks at hand.)

6. Demonstrates the Capacity to be a Team Player (Internalizes goals of the RMHC.) 7. Understands and Adheres to RMHC Philosophy, Rules, Regulations, Policies, and Procedures 8. Serves as an Ambassador of the RMHC to the Community (through phone and personal contacts) 10. Participates in Outside Projects (fundraisers, special events, etc.)

Outstanding New Volunteer Award 1. Volunteer must be with organization for 12 months or less.

2. Works a minimum of six hours per month including events or outside projects or 2 shifts per month at the House or with the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile in the preceding 12 months.

3. Attitude and Professionalism (Handles internal information and problems in a tactful and professional manner; refuses to discuss internal matters with those who are uninvolved; uses good self control; able to deal effectively with emergencies; strictly maintains confidentiality; uses good judgment.)
