elcome to the third edition of Mesa COMPASS! I am so happy to share a sample of the amazing and innovative things that the Mesa Chamber of Commerce has been up to. This issue features articles on the benefits of Chamber membership, spotlights of some of our community’s prominent members, and stories that help explain why Mesa is such an incredible community in which to Live, Work and Play. This past year, we have really focused on building our membership as much as possible. To do this, we are making sure that we are offering events that are truly helpful and valuable. We have met with many members along the way, and asked what type of information will benefit them and their companies the most, and then have changed some of our regular programs based on their input. Although having the opportunity to network and meet other local business owners is vitally important, we know that being a member of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce goes well beyond Happy Hours and other mixers. I also wanted to tell you about an amazing experience that I recently had the honor to be part of. In October, I participated in FIREBALL RUN, which is an emotional 8-day, 2,000-mile journey that has one important goal in mind: finding America’s missing children. Similar to “The Amazing Race,” FIREBALL RUN is a driving race and lifesized trivia game that involves 40 teams figuring out clues and trying to accomplish some pretty challenging tasks. Allison Ewers, Partner of HP2, and I made up the Mesa Chamber Chicks team. As Allison drove, I focused on using my phone and friends to figure out the clues and complete the different daily missions. For example, while we were in Texas I chased a calf around in order to try to remove a bow from its tail, and after donning white gloves, Allison and I got to hold the actual gun that was used by Annie Oakley. Although every day brought new excitement and adventure, we never forgot the important focus of our mission—to bring some of America’s missing children home. Since it started in 2007, I’m proud to say that FIREBALL RUN has aided in the recovery of over 40 missing children. As President of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, I am incredibly fortunate to spend each and every day surrounded by the best staff, board and members. I’m proud to share some of their stories with you here, and look forward to working with you for many years to come. Sincerely,

COMPASS POINTS

Without question, the attitude, reputation and drive of the city have dramatically changed for the better. (The mayor and city leaders) have proven to be outstanding assets to Mesa and the surrounding region. Arizona Celebration of Freedom

Continuing to thrive Never at rest, the City of Mesa continues to grow, attract and renew. BY ELISE RILEY

N

early 140 years since its founding, the City of Mesa is an ever-evolving oasis. A longtime haven for engineers — the Hohokam — and pioneer settlers eager to build a new life, the Mesa of the 21st century is a combination of those same spirits: a passion for technology and an optimism about the future. With a population of more than 457,000 and still growing, Mesa continues to be on the cutting edge of not only the Valley of the Sun, but also the Southwest.

Quality of life

While a high standard of living has always been a mainstay of Mesa, advancements and improvement in higher education are making Mesa a destination for scholars. The City of Mesa’s Office of Economic Development received the International Downtown Association Award for the City’s Higher Education Initiative, an effort to recruit institutions of higher education to downtown Mesa. 6 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

“Education is always at the forefront for the city, and we’re extremely proud of the partnerships we’ve made to bring a broader spectrum of education opportunities to our residents,” Mesa Chamber of Commerce CEO Sally Harrison said. Benedictine University, Albright College, Wilkes University and Upper Iowa University all call Mesa home. In addition, Grand Canyon University has selected Eastmark, Mesa’s innovative new hub of residential, industrial and technical growth, for its second campus. Eastmark is also one of several new-home communities in Mesa that is attracting families and spurring economic growth in the area.

Employment and growth

Among the many feathers in Mesa’s economic cap is Bridgestone Americas, which recently selected Mesa to be the home of its Biorubber Process Research Center. The campus will create organic rubber, and serve as one of the city’s highprofile, high-tech employers.

Other employers who have chosen Mesa include American Traffic Solutions, which is moving its headquarters and 750 jobs to Mesa, and OneSource Virtual, a Texas-based firm that’s chosen Mesa for 120 new jobs. “More now than ever, Mesa is open for business,” Harrison said. “Employers love what the city offers, and our highly skilled workforce is ecstatic to have so many opportunities in their own backyard.” Healthcare and technology are very important to Mesa. Banner Health remains the city’s top employer, and is the destination for nearly 10,000 professionals each day. More than 4,000 workers call The Boeing Company home in Mesa as well.

Transportation

Fortunately for businesses and residents, all the growth in Mesa is supported by an exceptional infrastructure. Convenient transportation is the theme of Mesa, with more advancements continually evolving. Loop 202 and the US 60 remain stable and efficient roadways to traverse the city. However, there is significant focus on the 3.1-mile Light Rail extension from Sycamore to Mesa Drive on Main Street. This $200 million project, funded by voters as well as federal monies, will make Downtown Mesa an even bigger draw for entertainment, culture, cuisine and commerce. “There’s arts and cultural events and activities, which will bring in more of

Riverview Park

Looking back

Mesa Arts Center

that nightlife that everyone wants,” said David Short, executive director of the Downtown Mesa Association. “We’re at that tipping point. People are interested in Downtown Mesa in the way they’re interested in Mesa in general — moving here, doing business here. There’s a reenergized sense about Mesa.” The expansion is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2015.

Arts and culture

Light Rail will be an obvious asset to residents and businesses, but among its greatest benefits will be the easy access it will provide to the cultural heart of the city. Arizona’s largest arts center, the Mesa Arts Center, is a haven for theatre productions, musical acts, comedians and more. The newly opened i.d.e.a. Museum gives children (and grownups, too) a hands-on art experience unlike any other. And the Arizona Museum of Natural History remains one of the state’s gems for discovering Arizona’s vibrant past. But it’s not all museums and theatre in Mesa. The new Riverview Park is the springtime home of the Chicago Cubs and considered one of the best destinations for spring baseball in the country. With a growing economy, an infusion of higher education, employers flocking to the city and a thriving arts scene, Mesa’s compass is pointing toward a bright future.

When Jo Wilson moved to Mesa in 1966, it was a much different city. Apache Junction wasn’t even considered a neighbor. There were only two high schools. And there was just one hospital. How times have changed. “When we moved here, we were considered on the edge of Mesa,” Wilson remembers. “Later, that same neighborhood was in the center of Mesa. Now it’s considered west Mesa. That’s the growth I’ve seen.” A longtime educator who taught at Westwood High School and later worked at Mesa Community College, Wilson left retirement to join the administrative staff of Benedictine University. Wilson moved to Mesa after college. Her father managed the Valley National Bank at McDonald and Main — she’d visit and have a soda at Crandall’s drug store. Mesa in 1966 had a small-town feel — similar to the way it does today, actually — but entertainment options were fewer. Wilson says that the perpetual debate was between Matta’s and El Charro for Mexican food. (For the record, Wilson’s family was a Matta’s family.) “When I first moved here when you wanted to shop here you went to Scottsdale,” she says. “If you wanted to eat, if you wanted to do anything, you left town. I now don’t have to spend my tax dollars outside of Mesa. There’s far more available to us. And that’s because we’ve brought businesses to the community.” Over 48 years as a Mesa resident, Wilson saw Mesa Community College grow from 4,200 students to 27,000. The city went from having no freeway to having several — and Light Rail transportation. Yet with all the change, it remains the same home. “I doubt I’ll ever move,” she says. “I’m very much a part of this community. My whole adult life has been here and I’ve very much engrained in the community. My parents were very heavily engrained. This is home.”

MESA CHAMBER

Mesa Chamber of Commerce:

The voice of business and a community BY ALISON STANTON

F

or over a century, the Mesa Chamber of Commerce has held a strong and powerful role as an advocate for local businesses. In addition, the Chamber helps to promote business success and growth in a variety of ways, as well as provide ample ways for its members to get involved in the local community. “The Mesa Chamber of Commerce is really the voice of business in Mesa,” says Craig Lohman, secretary and treasurer of the Board of Directors, and the Chair of the Stewardship Council. “For example, the Chamber is truly an advocate for both small and large businesses by helping them to be aware of issues on the legislative front, and other things that might affect them.” In addition, Lohman says, the Mesa Chamber of Commerce works 10 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

with a lobbying company to help let the local legislators know which issues are important to business owners, and advising them on how they should vote. “It’s a behind-the-scenes type of advocacy, but it really has a positive impact on our members,” Lohman says. Jeff Bither, a board member who also serves on the Stewardship Council, says that being a member of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce has helped him ways he never imagined.” “Success comes from planning my work and then working my plan, and the Chamber has been really helpful with that,” he says, adding that one pleasant surprise he has experienced through his membership was meeting a CEO of a local company who has since become his mentor. “I would have never met him unless I

was part of the Mesa Chamber,” he says. In addition, Bither says, the Chamber keeps him up to date on numerous issues that will have an impact on his business. “The Chamber has really helped me stay informed on what is going on in the City like light rail construction and new businesses, and I can come back to my partners and share this with them.” Although the Mesa Chamber of Commerce has definitely grown over the past 100-plus years and is always looking to expand its membership base, Lohman says it still offers members a personal and friendly feel that can help them succeed. “The Chamber is not so big that it feels like you are lost,” he says. “The Chamber provides plenty of opportunities to get involved, to interact and gain knowledge, and to network with others.”

“Voices within the Chamber” BY TRUDY RICE THOMPSON

Who advocates for Mesa businesses with Arizona lawmakers? Who stewards Mesa Chamber of Commerce finances, ensuring a healthy financial future? Who connects Mesa non-profits with the business community to find opportunity and create partnerships? Special committees, known as “councils,” within the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, that’s who. The councils featured here are among several that focus on different aspects of Chamber activities, and each has its own leadership and mission. Craig Lohman chairs the Chamber’s Stewardship Council. He is also on the Chamber’s Executive Council. Craig is a Partner with Lohman Company, PLLC, a Mesa based Certified Public Accounting and Business Consulting Firm. Craig and his firm have been members of the Mesa Chamber since 2011. The Chamber’s Stewardship Council focuses its attention and expertise on the Chamber’s financial health, meeting monthly and looking at trends, future challenges and planning for them. Otto Shill, attorney with JacksonWhite Attorneys at Law, chairs the Chamber’s Government Affairs Council, which focuses on opportunities and issues for business owners with governmental agencies. Eric Emmert is the Mesa Chamber’s consultant who works with the Government Affairs Council. He and Otto work together to lead the Council’s efforts to identify emerging public policy issues, candidates and legislation that affect Mesa businesses and advocating for the Mesa Chamber on business issues with governmental agencies. This Council also develops and distributes public policy statements on behalf of the Mesa Chamber,

ensuring that the members’ business interests are represented with governmental agencies. Election years are predictably busiest for the Government Affairs Council, and one of its many activities during election times are to develop methods to evaluate candidate platforms. This election year, the Council sponsored two forums with Senators Jeff Flake and John McCain that were well-attended. The Chamber’s Non-Profit Vitality Council links Mesa’s non-profit organizations with businesses, helping the non-profits and Mesa Chamber members connect. This effort leverages the synergy of the community for the benefit of all. The Non-Profit Vitality Council is chaired by Joe Holmes, with Gateway Bank and Dan Wallen, with Mesa United Way. Mesa’s strong sense of community and deep roots set the tone for this Council’s work, which includes organizing networking events to connect businesses and non-profit organizations and communicating the needs of non-profits to the Chamber community. Most of Mesa’s non-profits are part of the Mesa United Way, so Dan’s work with this Council brings their voices to the table. Today’s economic environment is especially challenging for non-profits, because, as one Mesa resident, Ray Taylor, who volunteers for several organizations, put it, “Need for our services is up, while donations are down for a lot of non-profits. All of us—residents, businesses, non-profit volunteers and their paid staff—share the same goals for our community. Connecting non-profits with Chamber members leverages all of our efforts to benefit those of us who live and work in Mesa. It’s the smart thing to do, and it’s the right thing to do.”

Vision: The Mesa Chamber of Commerce is the recognized resource and celebrated leader for the Mesa business community.

Mission: The Mesa Chamber of Commerce exists to Improve, Promote and Protect businesses in Mesa.

Core Values: The Mesa Chamber of Commerce’s core values are: Integrity, Leadership, Advocacy, Innovation, Service and Fun.

Not a member? Here’s what you’re missing For local business owners who are considering becoming a member of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, President Sally Harrison says there are plenty of benefits to joining. “There are so many reasons to join the Chamber, it’s challenging to list them all,” Harrison says, adding that from being listed on the Mesa Chamber website and having the opportunity to participate in literally hundreds of events and activities every year, to learning from experts through lectures and other programs, the Mesa Chamber of Commerce offers something for everyone. “One of the benefits of membership that I’m especially proud of is called the STEPUP program, which gives people the opportunity to serve on Chamber Councils and Committees that help to shape business practices right here in Mesa,” Harrison says. As part of STEPUP, Harrison says members may serve on the Government Affairs, Business Expansion, Non-Profit Vitality, Business Benefits and/or Management Stewardship Councils, as well as the Business in Education Foundation, Ambassador Program, and many others. “By offering such a wide range of programs, events and other opportunities, the Mesa Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to helping our members succeed, which in turn helps to improve the local business community while enhancing the quality of life in Mesa,” Harrison says. 40 YEARS UNDER COVER The City of Mesa Solid Waste Management Department Offers Residents and Business Owners a Variety of Programs that Promote Recycling Forty years ago, limited recycling options were available for individuals to dispose of their items. Materials that could have been potentially recycled ultimately ended up in the landfill, taking up valuable space and further depleting our limited natural resources.

What a difference four decades can make.

T

oday, thanks to advancements in technology and increased social awareness, items that were once buried can now be recycled into new materials. In order to help Mesa solid waste customers recycle as much as possible, thereby minimizing the amount of material going under cover, the City of Mesa offers a wide variety of innovative, easy-to-use and sustainable recycling programs. For example, every one of the approximately 123,000 single family households in Mesa is eligible to participate in the signature Blue Barrel Program. Residents can fill their barrels with paper, glass, metal and plastic, which are then picked up on a weekly basis. The Green Waste Barrel Program and Green Sweep Program provide residents with a way to have their grass clippings, tree branches and other yard debris composted. The City of Mesa also offers many additional userfriendly residential recycling services such

as household hazardous waste collection events, appliance and electronics recycling, and shred-a-thons. Developing positive recycling habits at an early age is important and the City of Mesa is committed to teaching their youngest residents about the importance of recycling and taking care of the planet. They provide fun and interactive presentations at all Mesa elementary schools which feature their popular Charlie the Recycling Chimp mascot as well as offer free membership to their popular “Club Blue – Mesa’s Young Recycling Squad” for kids ages 3 to 10. And something everyone should keep in mind at any age is garbage truck safety. While Mesa’s garbage and recycling trucks are travelling through the city’s residential neighborhoods, residents are reminded to always stay a safe distance away. Never approach a truck in operation and never race to get your barrel out for service

if it could potentially put you in harm’s way. And for garbage truck fans who like to watch the barrels being emptied, remember to follow the Stop, Watch, Stay Away rule. When residents hear the garbage truck driving down the street, they should stop and make note of where it is located. They can watch the garbage truck empty the barrels but remember to stay a safe distance away. Just as Mesa’s recycling programs evolve with technology so do their garbage trucks. Mesa’s fleet is going green by transitioning to clean burning compressed natural gas. Not only does it help reduce pollution but natural gas powered engines are more cost efficient in both fuel costs and maintenance costs versus traditional diesel powered engines. For more information about Mesa’s trash and recycling programs, visit the City of Mesa website.

MESA CHAMBER

Meet “Big Al”

Mesa Morning Live Once a month, over a hundred people gather at 7 a.m. to enjoy a catered breakfast, and then watch a live and lively taping of “Mesa Morning Live.” The 60-minute show, which is one of the most popular events offered by the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, is hosted by internationally-acclaimed comedian Mark Cordes. “ I sit behind a desk much like the late Johnny Carson used to do, and I tell jokes, do a Top 10 List, and then interview around three to five guests,” Cordes says. “We try to provide an entertainment angle to the information that we offer, and I just try to keep everyone engaged and keep them laughing.” “Mesa Morning Live,” which also airs on Channel 11 and is uploaded onto YouTube, has featured plenty of well-known local guests, including City Council Members, the Mayor, Sheriff Joe Arpaio and several of the candidates running for Governor. “It’s a whole cross-section of fascinating people,” Cordes says, adding that plenty of Chamber members have 14 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

also appeared on the show, as well as ASU wrestler and motivational speaker Anthony Robles, “The Biggest Loser” winner John Rhode, and Scott Flansburg, “The Human Calculator.” A newly-added segment features a non-profit every month. Gateway Bank is the Community Spotlight Sponsor of the interview. “I recently interviewed the founder of Sunshine Acres, who talked about what the organization is about, and how her family founded it around 70 years ago. It’s definitely a feel-good segment of the show,” Cordes says. In addition to enjoying the show, those in attendance also get the opportunity to network a bit, and share information with others about their businesses. Cordes says he looks forward to emceeing the show on the second Friday of every month. “It’s just a great way to start a Friday morning with some laughs and some neat people. There are definitely a lot of good people in Mesa.”

Every month, Mark Cordes, host of “Mesa Morning Live,” interviews several guests, many of whom are local business owners. Al Heggs, owner of Superstition Springs Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge-Ram, recently appeared on the show. The 6’ 9” Heggs, who used to play for the NBA’s Houston Rockets, was a clear favorite with the audience, who enjoyed hearing him discuss his work, and his fondness for the City of Mesa. “What I love the most about my work is the people,” Heggs says, adding that from his 120 employees to the customers who come into the dealership every day, he has “a great passion for people.” “I also love the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, and it’s such a pleasure to be part of it.” As a Chamber member, Heggs says he especially enjoys getting the opportunity to meet other business owners and patronizing those companies, as well as being involved in as many events that benefit others. “Because I’ve lost a family member to cancer, I participate in the Relay for Life, and I’ve helped the Checkered Flag Run collect backpacks for high school kids, and I sponsored the Mesa team for FIREBALL RUN and donated a car for their use,” he says, adding that he is truly proud to be a business owner in Mesa. “I love Mesa. There are so many great people here,” he says.

MESA CHAMBER

Events and activities, customized to business and community needs Every year, the Mesa Chamber of Commerce offers its members over 450 weekly, monthly and annual “happenings.” The following three events are prime examples of how the Chamber customizes its activities to benefit its members:

Grow Your Business – This lunch-hour event,

which takes place once a month, was recently redesigned to ensure that it includes as much helpful information to members as possible. “We wanted to be sure that we were offering information that members could take back with them to their businesses and use in a practical way, and so we asked our members what we could schedule in terms of programming that would help them the most,” says Bob Nelson, Director of Communications. With this goal in mind, Nelson says future Grow Your Business events will feature topics such as social media, discussions about the life cycle of a business prospect, and many others.

Women’s Networking Group – On the fourth Tuesday of every month, women of all ages and backgrounds meet for the Women’s Networking Group. President Sally Harrison says the event offers “a little bit of everything,” including field trips, happy hours, educational programs, and the opportunity for younger professionals to meet and learn from more experienced members.

Annual Leadership Awards – Around 400 people attended last year’s awards dinner, which Harrison says honors the cream of the crop of local business owners and educators. “We are always excited to give scholarships to students, and also honor the Professor of the Year and Teacher of the Year,” Harrison says. Although past events were more formal, the 2014 Mesa Leadership Awards, which was held in the spring at the Hilton Phoenix/Mesa, featured a “Leaders Hitting Home Runs” theme complete with plenty of baseball references and attendees dressed in their favorite team’s attire. 16 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

Companies like Bridgestone and Fujifilm have already settled in Mesa due to the city’s efforts. Bringing in the best Prominent companies continue to discover what Mesa has to offer

T

he city of Mesa is strengthening its already prominent reputation for attracting highly visible, forward-thinking employers—in large measure because of its highly educated workforce and pro-business policies. As the 38th largest city in the U.S., Mesa has the highest high school graduation rate among the top 50 cities in the nation, said William Jabjiniak, the director of economic development for the City of Mesa. “This sets the tone for a qualified workforce,” he said, “and these qualified graduates are encouraged to remain here by offering them numerous opportunities for a higher education, including community colleges, small, legacy-based institutions (including Albright College, Benedictine University, Wilkes University and Upper Iowa University, all with satellite campuses in Mesa) and large university campuses.”

Looking out for businesses’ best interests

The business-friendly climate of Mesa “provides a much-needed utility infrastructure to companies looking to build their own facilities,” Jabjiniak said, yet the city takes a proactive stance to provide an adequate buffer between residential areas and tracts of land perfectly suited for high-tech employment. The City’s economic development department has done an outstanding job convincing companies to relocate to benefit from tax advantages unique to Mesa, including the Military Reuse Zone (MRZ) program. MRZ sites, established by the state legislature to minimize the impact of military base closures, qualify for significant tax benefits. Mesa is one of only two MRZ’s in Arizona.

An impressive track record

Two major companies that have recognized the advantages of relocating to Mesa include Bridgestone and Able Engineering, both of which relocated 18 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

within the past two years. The Bridgestone Biorubber Process Research Center studies how native Southwest plants can be used as alternatives to rubber, Jabjiniak explained. Able Engineering, led by CEO Lee Benson, moved from Phoenix to the Gateway Airport region of Mesa in July of last year. “We needed to move to be closer to an airport,” said Benson, whose company repairs aircraft components. “And the City of Mesa worked more cooperatively with us than any other city in the state. Mesa is a great partner for us.” “We continue to recruit aviation or high-tech defense companies to Gateway,” said Mike Merk, director of business development for the PhoenixMesa Gateway Airport Authority. “We have 1,000 available acres adjacent to the airport that we’d like to see occupied, and we’re confident we can meet the needs of more companies like Able Engineering.” Jabjiniak said Mesa will continue its “HEAT” initiative to attract healthcare, education, aerospace, aviation, technology and tourism companies to the city. “Fortune 500 companies are noticing what Mesa and the region have to offer,” he said. “Mesa is ideal for these companies because of our robust infrastructure, shovel-ready land and streamlined entitlement process.”

Why couldn’t I use this phone as a microphone so everyone in the room could hear me?” For the next two months, the brothers searched for such an app, eager to use it themselves. When they discovered none existed, they began developing their own

and named it Crowd Mics. Now, their growing business connects participants in large workshops and conferences to increase audience engagement through a wireless microphone system and allow for immediate feedback with its polling feature. “It’s really about giving the audience a voice,” Tim Holladay said. The process is fairly simple: The presenter pays to download the app to a cell phone or tablet then plugs the device into the room’s sound system. Audience members then download the app on their phones for free to create hundreds of mini-wireless microphones across the room. Although the brothers debuted their app to the tech world at an event in Silicon Valley, they are building their business in their hometown of Mesa, hoping to hire their first couple of employees in the

next few months. “We are committed to building this thing in Mesa, Arizona,” said Tim Holladay, 34, who lives in the city with his wife and five children and who quit his job in commercial real estate to launch the business. “We appreciate the support we’ve gotten from the community; it helps when the community truly gets behind you.” Tim and Sean Holladay are just one example of young innovators and entrepreneurs building their businesses and careers in Mesa. Another is Jenna Jacob, a 21-year-old cosmetologist who recently earned her own chair at the Studio 56 Salon on Southern Avenue west of Higley Road. “Within 15 years, I would love to manage my own salon,” said Jacob, who is taking business classes at Arizona State University and gets involved in local charity work, as well as a mentoring group that connects female entrepreneurs in the area. “There are a lot of wonderful people (in Mesa) who help out small businesses,” Jacob said.

Who are the HoHokams?

HoHokam Park

Mesa’s baseball legacy continues to impact the community New Cubs home greets record crowds, HoHokam Park embraces the A’s BY BRIAN SODOMA

M

esa’s spring training roots can be traced back to the 1940s when the New York Giants baseball club sought a spring home in the Arizona desert. But through the years, no team has captured the hearts of spring training devotees like the Chicago Cubs. With the opening of the club’s new $99 million Cubs Park at Wrigleyville West near Mesa Riverview Park in 2014, a record 214,000 Cubs fans made their way through the turnstiles for spring training games this year. With the first spring training season in the books, the City of Mesa is now turning to the expansion of a new hotel, restaurant and entertainment amenities around Wrigleyville West, said Scot Rigby, senior economic development project manager for the City of Mesa. “We’re seeing a lot of interest from office developers too,” Rigby said. “Within the next couple years that area will continue to be built out.” Located near the intersection of the 101 and 202 loops, a 180-room Sheraton hotel and convention center is currently under construction and should be open by the 2015 spring training season. Meanwhile, the newly updated Riverview Park is a popular spot for Mesa residents and visitors. The expanded park now boasts splash pads, climbing areas and new 20 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

multi-purpose fields perfect for hosting sport tournaments and other events. “The goal was to make this a 24-7 yearround destination, not just a stadium for 15 dates a year. … Even during the summer, the park is packed,” Rigby added.

New to HoHokam

Replacing the Cubs at Mesa’s HoHokam Park will be the Oakland A’s, who are expected to draw more than 7,000 fans per spring training game. The park will see improvements to seating, its press area, team clubhouse and field. Nearby Fitch Park, the actual training area for the A’s, will also see enhancements like a new hydrotherapy pool, weight room, updated pitching mounds and other improvements. “It’s about bringing it up to the level of other teams who have top-level facilities,” Rigby added. Both the city and the A’s will share the cost for the improvements, with a maximum of $17.5 million that can be spent by Mesa, Rigby explained. Prior to the A’s approaching the city about the move, the city considered courting other teams, which could have been more costly. “You have to maintain it and keep it up while you’re courting someone. This opportunity presented itself as a cost savings to the city,” he added.

You may have seen them at the Cubs spring training games – volunteers in red pullovers escorting patrons to their seats, helping them navigate parking or offering a hand in other ways. They are the HoHokams. The non-profit volunteer group is made up of about 180 Mesa residents who help with ushering and other game day support efforts. They are funded by the Chicago Cubs and their history traces back to the 1950s, when the Cubs looked to a group of local volunteers to help them run spring training games. The HoHokams used to actually sell tickets to the games, too, although that’s no longer the case, said Tom Rhodes, a long-time volunteer and active member of the group. “For us, it’s about increasing the fan experience,” he said. “We are all about making sure the fans have a good time.” The group also oversees the HoHokam Foundation, which, through the 50/50 raffle conducted at each Cubs spring training game and other efforts, brings about $150,000 to local youth sports activities and programs annually, Rhodes explained. The group is largely made up of long-time Mesa residents who have community service and business ties to the area. Helping out on game-day is as much about engaging with the community as it is the baseball experience itself. “Loving baseball is nice, but it’s not necessary,” Rhodes added. -Brian Sodoma

Retention program recognizes existing companies Aims to keep businesses happy and successful BY DEBRA GELBART

T

he Mesa Chamber of Commerce and the economic development experts in the City of Mesa know they can’t rest on their business-friendly laurels or take the city’s appeal to major employers for granted. That’s why the Chamber and Mesa’s Economic Development department have partnered to launch a retention program in mid-July of this year. It’s designed as a way to reach out to already-established companies

to determine how satisfied they are with Mesa as a corporate home and to determine if the companies need any additional services. “We recognize that 80 percent of the corporate growth in Mesa will come from our existing business community,” said Bill Jabjiniak, Mesa’s economic development director. “We want to make sure we’re maintaining a relationship with these businesses. Visiting as many as we can, we hope to learn about any concerns they might have and share information about programs available to help them.” The first 90-day phase of the retention program called for a team of city officials — often including the mayor, city manager and economic development director—to meet with representatives of 60 companies in 90 days. The officials listened to what’s important to the company representatives and let them know about opportunities to receive additional financial help, Jabjiniak said. Two of those opportunities are Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants. STTR is a U.S. Small Business Administration-sponsored and state-administered program that expands funding for innovation research

and development necessary to meet the country’s scientific and technological challenges in the 21st century. SBIR grants encourage small businesses to engage in research and development that has the potential for commercialization. The businesses also learned about the advantages of Mesa being a Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) and a Military Reuse Zone (MRZ), both of which offer tax advantages. An FTZ, located near a U.S. port of entry, is designated by the U.S. Department of Commerce and allows delayed or reduced duty payments on foreign merchandise. An MRZ is designated in an area where a military base has closed. One of the companies visited in the first phase of the retention program was Sandia Research Corporation, which has been in Mesa since 2002. The company focuses on research and development of tools needed by U.S. government agency clients. “The retention program is a very good effort to ensure that companies stay in Mesa,” said Steve Shope, president of the company. In January, the retention program will begin to visit dozens more companies located in Mesa.

Shaping downtown Locally owned businesses provide charm, energy

D

owntown Mesa is on the rise. With worldclass attractions like the Mesa Art Center and the coming light rail extension, it’s no wonder people are expressing a renewed interest in the emerging metropolis. However, while these major attractions are drawing patrons to the area, it’s the eclectic charm and authenticity of locally owned gems that keep them coming back. These local hotspots are not to be missed.

A Piece of History…

BY LAUREN REIDY

“Inside the Bungalow is one of the treasures of Downtown,” says David Short, Executive Director of the Downtown Mesa Association. ‘ITB’ is a coffee and tea house/event venue celebrated for its strong brews, delicious food and spacious patio. Located within a beautifully restored 1916 bungalow home on N. Robson, the café has been a popular Mesa spot since 1995. Owner and Downtown Mesa resident, Betty Freeman, Inside the Bungalow

purchased the coffee shop, then called Coffee Talk, in 2005. “When we bought the place, we knew we were buying a little piece of history. But we also knew we wanted to make changes,” Freeman says. She and her partner infused the café with a comfortable, quirky atmosphere and expanded the business. In the last decade, ‘ITB’ has also hosted yoga classes and now doubles as a popular wedding venue. Freeman has also seen Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide | 21

the area evolve. “Downtown Mesa has always been a nice community, but it’s getting stronger,” Freeman says. “There are new (business) owners and they bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm.”

This is not your average pizza shop….

Locally owned and operated by the Nikolich family, Queen’s Pizzeria and Cafe serves up fresh, made-toorder pizza, sandwiches and Stromboli’s in the heart of Downtown Mesa. The owners recently purchased and renovated the space next door, adding a full bar and a rolling garage door that opens the pizzeria up to the street when the weather is pleasant.

HOUSING

The Nikolich’s further demonstrated their commitment to the community by incorporating bricks from their own home into the new building structure. “The investment that Queen’s has put into Downtown is great,” Short says. “People love the new restaurant and having a bar now offers options to those who would like to enjoy a drink and a MAC show.” Queen’s and ‘ITB’ are just two of a growing group of unique local shops that are crafting the identity of the downtown area. “Downtown Mesa is eclectic, unique and more hip than people think,” Short says.

IN THE WORKS BY MICHAEL FERRARESI

H

eading into 2015, the Fiesta District is slated to be one of the most exciting projects in Mesa, along with light-rail expansion, new hotels and other developments from the west side of town to Gateway. As Fiesta Mall aged over the past several years, the city and developers saw the potential -- with all that commercial space on Southern Avenue -- to create a distinctly Mesa destination for both residents and visitors. Those plans are in place now, thanks to nearly $400 million in public and private

investment. The Centrica office project is under construction at the heart of the Fiesta redevelopment, in the space that was once Valley East Shopping Center. Urban redevelopment specialists at Phoenix Rising Investments bought the abandoned bigbox retail plaza at Southern and Longmore. In August, the city announced that the 110,000-square-foot Valley East would become Centrica, and that it would be converted into office space located within walking distance to restaurants, retail and educational institutions.

The development broke ground in September. Mesa City Councilman Dennis Kavanaugh said that Centrica and the overall redevelopment of the Fiesta District gives District 3 and west Mesa the possibility of a more walkable, centrally located area to tie various amenities together. The Fiesta District, located along Southern Avenue between Alma School and Dobson roads, holds the potential as a mixed-use anchor with its proximity to downtown to the north. It is also located at a prime juncture between Mesa and the rest of the Valley, just off the U.S. 60 and Loop 101. “Developers are recognizing that properties in that area are seriously undervalued, but they provide

some of the best access in the Valley and link Mesa to a greater overall workforce,” said Kavanaugh, who characterized the Class-A retail space scheduled for Centrica as some of the bestavailable office space available in an urban setting.

Fiesta is also an emerging center for higher education. Tenants in the Fiesta neighborhood include Upper Iowa University, on Alma School south of Southern, and Mesa Community College, which is the largest Maricopa Community College campus.

Also, Albright College, which has been in operation for the past two years in the Fiesta District Mesa Finacial Plaza, is one of the legacy schools Mesa recruited. As part of the city’s end game for revitalizing Fiesta Mall, a $12 million streetscape beautification and narrowing project is expected to make Southern more walkable, linking Centrica to the rest of the district. “Now you have more separation from the street, a lot of shade, and it’s much better lit at night,” Kavanaugh said. Overall, the Centrica and Fiesta District revitalization efforts should provide an entirely new pedestrian and commuter experience as new businesses settle in.

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport

All roads lead to Mesa, the transportation hub of the East Valley Airports and public transportation revitalize city, create jobs and boost economy BY MEGHANN FINN SEPULVEDA

F

or years Valley residents and visitors alike have taken advantage of the growing transportation options in Mesa. Since the late 1940’s, Mesa has been a pioneer in the general aviation industry at Falcon Field, and with the addition of passenger commercial airline service at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in 2007, these two airports have significantly contributed to the overall economy. In 2015, Valley METRO light rail will expand its service into central Mesa, adding four more stations. The focus on transportation is clear and the future is bright. 28 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

The evolution of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport

Following the closure of Williams Air Force Base in 1993, 3,000 jobs were lost. Many of the tenants left the property and base housing was vacant. “Local government officials considered utilizing the land for a retirement community or as a general aviation airport,” said Brian Sexton, public information officer for Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority. “There were over 100 homes on site.” Today, the airport is owned and operated by Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority, consisting of five municipalities and an Indian Community,

including City of Mesa, City of Phoenix, The Gila River Indian Community, Town of Gilbert, Town of Queen Creek, and City of Apache Junction, who set and implement policy and oversee the operating and capital budget. Arizona State University’s Polytechnic campus and Maricopa Community Colleges are housed on the west side of the property and add an educational element. “One of the catalysts to the economic boost was when large aircraft maintenance and manufacturers brought in hundreds of employees and gained international attention,” Sexton said. “The airport was gaining momentum and kept developing.”

COMPASS POINTS

But the biggest economic boost to PhoenixMesa Gateway Airport was commercial passenger service with the addition of Allegiant Air. “We see 1.3 million passengers every year,” Sexton said. “It is estimated that with every arriving flight, $80,000 of new tourist dollars are put back into the economy.” The airport generates $1.3 billion annually and supports 10,400 jobs.

The revitalization of Falcon Field Airport

Originally used as a military flight training facility during World War II, Falcon Field Airport was acquired by the city of Mesa in 1948 when it began functioning as a general aviation airport, accommodating private and business aircraft. The 784-acre airport accounted for 263,000 aircraft operations in 2013, making it the fourth most active general aviation airport in the U.S. There are 83 businesses on the grounds of the airport employing more than 1,000 people. Falcon Field is financially self-sustained with operating revenue of $3.6 million from fuel flowage fees, ground leases, and hangar and tie-down spaces. The airport does not receive funds from the City of Mesa General Fund. “We have invested $20 million in capital improvement projects over the next five years,” said Corinne Nystrom, airport director at Falcon Field. “With construction scheduled to begin early next year, we will focus on airport infrastructure and make upgrades to the terminal building and public areas.” As part of the renovation project, improvements were made to the airport’s two runways, taxiways, parking ramps and visual aids for pilots during take offs and landing. Visitors to Falcon Field take advantage of the Valley’s clear skies, making recreational flight training, rentals and aircraft charters optimal. “Often times we are the first impression of Mesa,” Nystrom added. “We are making significant changes and are trying to take the airport to the next level.”

Central Mesa light rail extension project If you ride the Valley METRO light rail for work or recreation purposes, you’ll be happy to know that the 3.1-mile Central Mesa extension project is scheduled for completion in late 2015. In 2009, Valley Metro received approval for the project, which will extend the light rail on Main Street from Sycamore to Mesa Drive. It will include four stations at Alma School Road, Country Club Drive, Center Street and Mesa Drive, along with a park-and-ride facility for commuters. The approximate total cost of the project, which began in 2013, is $200 million, generated from sales tax, regional and federal grant dollars, and will add more than 700 construction jobs each year. Businesses impacted by the project can participate in several assistance programs to maintain visibility during construction, and residents can obtain a METRO Max Rewards card for special offers and discounts from businesses surrounding the light rail corridor. Valley Metro expects the new extension will add 5,000 new riders each day. The City of Mesa is optimistic that the project will not only offer easier access to arts, entertainment and dining, but will attract new development in the downtown area.

Mesa is reemerging as a great destination for Valley residents and visitors from outside the region. Specifically, downtown Mesa is again appealing to people of all interests and ages, generating a buzz with new dining, arts, entertainment and shopping options. — ROB ANTONIAK,

Feeling right at home in Mesa Mesa’s housing market offers both diversity and quality of life BY DOLORES TROPIANO

T

he housing market in Mesa is as diverse as the town’s demographics. The city has a selection of beautiful older homes with larger lots, newer developments with abundant amenities, and everything in between.

Choices abound

Many of the more than 400,000 residents that call Mesa home live near the splendor of the Red Mountains enjoying outdoor life that includes running, hiking, biking, and brilliant sunrises dashing across the morning skies. Others opt for downtown living which delivers on cultural offerings such as the Mesa Arts Center and provides easy access to other cities

through the Mesa light-rail, which is set for completion in 2015. “There are lots of choices in Mesa,” said Craig Peck, CQ an agent for Re/Max New Heights, who has been selling homes in Mesa for more than 30 years. “You can get everything from a starter home to a newer planned community.”

Great value

But while the homes are diverse, there is one thing that most Mesa homes have in common — they are reasonably priced. Homebuyers get more for their money in Mesa, said Peck whose sales are generally in the $200-$225,000 price range. “There is quite a diverse selection and all at good and affordable prices compared to

32 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

other neighborhoods in the area,” Peck said.

Eastmark shines

Eastmark is one of Mesa’s newest developments being built on 3,200 acres near Ray and Ellsworth Roads. The well-integrated, large-scale community opened in 2013. It will eventually have 15,000 dwellings surrounding the Great Park — more than 100-acres that will run through the heart of the community, offer entertainment and events, and connect residential areas. “It is our version of Central Park,” said Suzanne WaldenWells, Eastmark’s director of community life. Like many of their other developments, at Eastmark, DMB Associates puts a premium on creating a community.

“It is a totally new spin on urban living,” said WaldenWells. “Eastmark is about a connected way of life — having the opportunity to live, work, and go to school in the same community. Shopping and entertainment are part of that. It really creates a bigger vision than a traditional master planned community.” Mesa Mayor John Giles grew up in downtown Mesa and just recently sold his childhood home. “When it comes to housing — Mesa is very diverse,” Giles said. “We have brand new master-planned communities like Eastmark, very high end affluent neighborhoods like Las Sendas and an ample supply of affordable homes. You can buy anything you want in Mesa.”

COMPASS POINTS

When I speak with other developers who work across various municipal boundaries, Mesa always gets high marks for trying to move projects along, either in the plan review process, permitting process or actual construction of projects. I personally recommend Mesa as a city that is friendly to business and development. — CRAIG AHLSTROM SR.,

esa is a magnet for many retirees who gather to enjoy their golden years. There they find friendship, fun and a sterling silver lining to living in the Valley — wonderful weather. Mild winters stretch from October to May. And there is no scarcity of other seniors in the area to share this season of life with. “There are large portions of East Mesa that are almost entirely oriented towards retirement homes,” said Mesa Mayor John Giles. “Mesa is very attractive for someone looking to retire. It is a big part of what Mesa is known for.” Mesa’s reasonably priced housing is part of its appeal for adults 60 and older. “Mesa is very affordable,” said Dan Taylor, CEO for East Valley Adult Resources. “And for those on a set budget that is important because outside of medical costs, housing in retirement can be a very costly expense.” Encore on First is a vibrant ageand rent-restricted community. It is conveniently located on Main Street near the Mesa Arts Center and transportation such as the Mesa light rail and the

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. Encore at Eastmark is a new community being built as part of the Eastmark development on Ray and Ellsworth Roads. It is set to open in 2015 for active adults 55 and older, offering a state-of-the-art Village Center, a resort pool, fitness center, class facilities, and never-ending social events. Taylor touted Mesa’s strong social service network including multiple volunteer options and supportive services as another reason many retirees are making Mesa their home. Taylor’s nonprofit organization features two centers in Mesa — the Red Mountain Active Adult Center and the Mesa Active Adult Center. The centers offer a wide array of classes for life-long learning, nutritional services and exercise. “We offer places for people to connect, contribute and care for each other,” said Taylor.

Still University is considered the first institution of osteopathic healthcare. Its Mesa campus, one of the city’s higher-education options, not only offers programs in health sciences but is also home to schools of osteopathic medicine, dentistry and oral health. The university also frequently ranks in U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Graduate Schools” guide. Now in her second year of the OT program, Love said she enjoys the small classes, which are typically led by a professor and an assistant professor. COMPASS POINTS

Mesa has a solid base of constituents who recognize and value strong policies that promote and grow business, a system that builds an educated and trained workforce, and leaders that advocate for developments that will allow it to remain economically sustainable. — ANGELA CREEDON,

only practice being a provider, but also a patient; it allows them to better understand their clients’ needs. “One of my assignments was that I’d been in a car accident and had to use a wheelchair,” Love said, describing one lesson that was a real eye opener. “I had to practice getting my wheelchair in and out of the car. And once I was home, my husband, Jeremy, had to carry me into the house because the wheelchair wouldn’t fit through the door.” Even when she’s not in class or working part-time as a respite and rehabilitation provider, Love supports her school by donning the costume of school mascot Bucky, “the Ram of Reason,” at community events. She loves working with kids, so helping deserving youngsters get free vision screenings or discounted dental care is truly meaningful. “Having Bucky there,” she said, “is a good way to get the kids to relax and not have things seem scary.” Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide | 39

Q&A

WITH MESA PUBLIC SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT DR. MICHAEL COWAN

Despite draconian budget cuts of $122 million during the recession, Mesa Public School District has managed to maintain an award-winning set of schools serving more than 70,000 students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Mesa Superintendent Michael Cowan recently shared the secrets of the success of his schools. How do Mesa Public Schools distinguish themselves from other Valley districts? We

stand out through key recognitions that we have received. Recently, we were recognized for having the highest graduation rate of large districts across the nation. We were also recognized as a Beat the Odds Achievement District which means our kids out performed their demographics and were recognized for Outstanding Physical Management. We get more bang for the buck out of our taxpayer’s dollars for education than other districts. And our students, staff, schools and district typically receive many state and national recognitions for excellence.

How has Mesa managed to create such an excelling district? It’s a two-part

formula. We have a community with a great deal of respect for Mesa schools and a great deal of expectations for us. And we have really dedicated and committed people in Mesa’s public schools.

42 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

What are some of the latest improvements to Mesa schools? Two years

ago the community passed a $230 million bond to infuse technology into our classrooms. We just finished all of the infrastructure support to make that happen. What are the keys to success in your classrooms? One is our

schools are safe, pleasant places for our students to learn. Second — our teachers and staff share high expectations for all students. Third is that each school is led by a reliable and competent leader. The fourth component is that our students know our teachers care about them and are working to ensure their success and finally, parents and students partner to ensure student success. How have Arizona Common Core Standards impacted the quality of education being offered in Mesa? There are a lot

of myths out there about Common Core. But for us, these new standards have helped us raise academic expectations for our students and they are thriving and achieving with these expectations.

What are you most proud of about Mesa schools? In

the big, big picture my greatest source of pride are the people we have — the teachers and staff that teach with all their hearts and are wholly dedicated to the success of our kids. It is an honor to work besides these people.

Mountain Vista Medical Center

Mesa is home to some of the top healthcare facilities in the Southwest BY MICHAEL FERRARESI

W

ith more than 1,300 hospital beds now available across its worldclass medical centers, Mesa has emerged as a leader in the Valley’s healthcare industry expansion. Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center and Cardon Children’s Medical Center both opened within the past few years to provide more specialized services. Mountain Vista Medical Center, east of Loop 202 on Southern Avenue, is also assisting residents through a partnership with Mesa Fire and Medical Department that’s designed to reduce the strain of non-emergency medical calls on the city’s first-responders. Those three sites emphasize Mesa’s dedication to growing the healthcare and biosciences sector, both to address the needs of older residents, and to set a foundation for future

generations. In one report, Mesa civic leaders cited Banner Simulation Medical Center as the “largest simulation training center in the nation” and that higher education centers like the medical school at A.T. Still University and applied biosciences program at Arizona State University Polytechnic, among others, are in place to help the city “build a workforce pipeline” with the healthcare professionals it trains locally. Bill Daniell, Mesa deputy fire chief for emergency medical services, said his department worked with Mountain Vista Medical Center to create a system where MVMC nurse practitioners now ride alongside paramedics to make up two-person teams on some calls where a fire truck or ambulance is not necessarily needed. The idea with the Community Care Unit is to identify medical emergency calls that might be handled

44 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

without an emergency room run, which can take fourperson fire/paramedic crews out of service and impact their ability to handle higherpriority emergencies in their first-due areas. “We know there’s going to be an increase in need for services,” Daniell said. “What we’re seeing is more collaboration on how to address those needs and services.” Oftentimes, residents sense they are in need of emergency medical attention and call 911 when the circumstances around their call might be better addressed by a non-emergency unit. Now, through a $12.5 million grant through the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Mesa Fire and Medical is refining that process of how dispatchers divert emergency calls to specialized units that can both treat residents at their homes and transport them to a medical center if necessary.

In a time of doing more with less public safety resources, the fire department has been able to limit the time first-responders spend on lower-level emergency medical calls, which keeps them available to respond to serious car accidents, higher-priority emergency medical calls, fires, and other potential hazards. The program has the potential to save city emergency service funds, but also to help residents avoid unnecessary ambulance or emergency room expenses in many cases. Daniell said the possibilities for Mesa’s healthcare industry and emergency services are boundless with the city’s medical centers and higher education programs. “To me, there’s recognition now about that growth in the healthcare industry and the city’s been progressive about developing those educational opportunities right here,” he said.

Hiking the Superstition Mountains

Mesa’s quality of life attracts a wide range of residents BY SUZANNE WRIGHT

e’s not the city’s spokesperson, but he sure sounds like one. Bob Adloch, executive producer of the Phoenix Suns Television, grew up and attended school in the East Valley. He says the choice to raise his family in Mesa was an easy one. “Mesa has so much to offer, from great sports complexes and concert venues to the most classic Main Street in Arizona, from incredible views in the Superstition Mountains to some of the best golf courses in the country. It’s at the center of what we like to do, with easy access to so much.” Over the years, Mesa has been named among the Top Digital Cities in U.S., Best Places to Live and Best Cities to Retire In. And it is. But for all those accolades, Mesa is foremost a warm and welcoming home base for natives and newcomers, along with those who have “boomeranged” back to town permanently after stints in the Midwest or East Coast.

“For a city of nearly a half a million people, I love how Mesa has a very small town feel,” says Adloch. “Generations of families have grown up near each other, built their businesses and lives around a city that continues to grow and progress.” Fast-growing Mesa has successfully attracted residents across a spectrum of ages and interests. Not only are Mesa’s current amenities an advantage, future development plans are a motivation for many. David and Paige Giarrizzo are a young couple that appreciates the community’s transportation infrastructure and varied lifestyle assets. He’s event coordinator at Infusionsoft; she’s associate director of financial aid operations at Apollo Education Group. “As long-time residents of Mesa, we moved to Eastmark not only to be a part of a fun, tightly-knit community, but to enjoy the benefits of future opportunities around the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport,” explains David Giarrizzo. “With the prospect of new schools, businesses

and food and entertainment venues, we are excited to live in Mesa and be in on the ground-floor of the economic growth. As one of Arizona’s top-producing real estate agents, Doug Hopkins could live anywhere; he’s chosen an upscale development in Mesa. I like to think I know the East Valley better than most, says Hopkins. “I absolutely love Las Sendas and am very privileged to call it home. The reason I moved here was so my girls, Kayla and Nicole, could attend one of the top elementary schools in the state. There is no other place in Arizona I would rather live.” You might say Hopkins is “all in” when it comes to his adopted home; he’s also an investor and part owner at The Hub, a local bar and grill. And his parents own Beyond Expressions Antiques in Mesa. In addition to mountain and city views, Las Sendas offers a desert-style layout that Hopkins finds unmatched. “Having one of the finest golf developments in the Phoenix area isn’t too shabby either.” Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide | 47

Arts Alive…at the MAC Center World-class facility is right at home in Mesa BY SUZANNE WRIGHT

hen the GOP tapped the Mesa Arts Center as the venue for its 2012 Presidential Debate, the nation got a peek at what locals already knew: it’s a state-of-the-art facility and one of the most influential institutions in the region. Opened in 2005, the MAC is the cultural anchor of a vibrant downtown, helping ignite sustained economic development. With up to 800 performances annually, yearround galleries with changing exhibitions and an everchanging slate of art education classes, it’s a destination that draws thousands of visitors annually. And talk about a sense of place—the building itself is architecturally stunning. Paralleling the Shadow Walk is the Arroyo, a boulder-filled water feature that includes cut stone and lava rock. Overhead, a series of colored glass canopies cast additional shadows. The space feels both grand and intimate, simultaneously. Since you brought it up, is Shakespeare still relevant today? I can’t go a day without hearing someone on the news say “she doth protest too much” or “it’s much ado about nothing.” We place our productions in different periods [of time], update the language and transport them all over the world. But we don’t change the fundamental core of what’s written. The reason Shakespeare’s stories are timeless is because they speak to universal truths. They touch generations. Some people may not know that many popular contemporary films

are based on Shakespeare’s works, like Clueless. Are there any other misconceptions you want to dispel? The misconception that Shakespeare is long, boring and you can’t understand it. Star Wars and Lord of the Rings have their heart in Shakespeare. Our productions are two hours long—less than the length of a movie—and visually as compelling as Braveheart or Game of Thrones. What’s something folks don’t know about the MAC? We’re an award-winning venue—we beat out the Sydney Opera House in a design competition. It takes less time to get here than to go to the Herberger downtown and we have free parking. And with light rail coming, it’ll be even easier.

A shopper’s paradise found in Mesa Sheraton Traditional, specialty, and open-air retail concepts offer dining and nightlife Mesa Hotel – opening in March 2015 BY MEGHANN FINN SEPULVEDA

M

esa is quickly becoming a shopping destination. For savvy shoppers on a budget, or those looking to indulge, Mesa hits the mark. From large retailers to small specialty stores, shoppers of all kinds can enjoy their experience in Mesa.

By Mehgann Finn Sepulveda

Open-air shopping

Located at the Loop 202 and Dobson Road, Mesa Riverview is the largest outdoor shopping center in Mesa, offering a variety of more than 40 anchor and specialty stores for ample shopping, dining and entertainment options. With major anchors such as Bed Bath & Beyond, Sports Authority and Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, the shopping center draws thousands of visitors annually. “Mesa Riverview is a great venue for shopping,” said Michelle Streeter, director of communications at Visit Mesa. “Women’s fashion is very popular for visitors looking for value, along with those shoppers seeking authentic western wear and even lifestyle amenities.” In addition to shopping centered around apparel, health, beauty and fitness, home goods and electronics, Mesa Riverview features casual and sit-down restaurant dining options. Nightlife is widely available with happy hour specials, trivia nights, karaoke, sunset concerts and other events throughout the month.

Superstition Springs Center

“There is craft beer at The Brass Tap, dancing at Cactus Moon and live music at Toby Keith’s,” Streeter said. “The center definitely has matched the needs of visitors, especially for Cubs fans looking for something to do after a spring training game.” For those in search of family-friendly entertainment, the Cinemark movie theatre and Howie’s Game Shack provide a fun, safe atmosphere for children and young adults. “Hyatt Place makes the whole center anchored, creating an ideal destination for out-of-town visitors who are in walking distance to dining, nightlife and spring training,” Streeter said.

Traditional shopping

Superstition Springs Center offers the classic mall experience featuring large department stores like Dillard’s, JC Penny, and Macy’s, along with 150 specialty shops. In combination with

shopping, Superstition Springs boosts many dining options and other amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi, a Kids Club, carousel, and outdoor amphitheater. Located at U.S. 60 and Power Road, Superstition Springs Center caters to families looking to shop, dine and spend time together.

Antique shopping

Dubbed as the oldest antique mall in Mesa, the Antique Plaza is ideal for shoppers interested in jewelry, Native American pottery, furniture, and art collectibles. Open 362 days of the year and conveniently situated in the heart of downtown Mesa, Antique Plaza attracts antiquers from all over the country, shopping for themselves, family members or friends, or seeking antique appraisals. “All of these amenities cater to travelers with budgets of various shapes and sizes,” Streeter added.

Chicago Cubs fans are in for another treat. The Sheraton Mesa Hotel is set to open in early March, just in time for the beginning of Cactus League spring training. Conveniently located between the Cubs stadium and Riverview Park, the hotel will feature 180 guest rooms, including junior and VIP suites, and will be ideal for business and leisure travelers. “This incredible new property is affordable luxury,” Streeter said. “The 1-acre resort-style pool area centers around modern water and fire features throughout, and guests can enjoy the hotel’s two pools and hot tubs along with poolside service and other great amenities.” As an added benefit to this premiere location, Cubs fans are steps away to the stadium, and in walking distance to shopping, dining and entertainment. Sky Harbor International Airport is just 8 miles away. The Sheraton Mesa Hotel is expected to do well, providing accommodations for seasonal visitors during peak travel season. “In 2010 we saw doubledigit growth in occupancies for hotels in the Mesa area,” Streeter said. “We anticipate a significant climb in numbers this year as well.” Learn more at starwoodhotels.com.

NEW PROJECTS COMPASS POINTS

As in any community, success comes with dynamic leadership and the ability to solidify public-private sector partnerships one step at a time. We’re seeing this happen each and every day. — MARC GARCIA,

Looking ahead 5 new projects that will continue to shape economic development of Mesa BY MEGHAN MORAVCIK WALBERT

rom high-tech office space to public transportation, the City of Mesa is in the midst of an economic development transformation. Here are five of the top projects happening now and in the near future that officials expect will change Mesa’s landscape for the better. 72 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

1

Project Centrica

The $10 million Project Centrica in Mesa’s Fiesta District promises to revamp a long-time vacant property into high-tech office space. The property, located at Longmore Street and Southern Avenue and formerly known as the Valley East Plaza Shopping Center, is expected

COMPASS POINTS

I believe the city is well positioned with the necessary utility infrastructure, employment base, housing, and educational assets to meet the needs of the business community and compete with other large cities on a national and international stage. — LAURA SNOW,

Senior director of strategy and planning for Banner Health.

to be completed by mid-2015. It will feature 700 parking spaces, fiber optic backbone connectivity, and easy access to the U.S. 60 and Loop 101 freeways and public transportation.

2

Elliot Road Technology Corridor

East Mesa is home to more than 1,000 acres across one-and-a-half square miles of developable land known as the Elliot Road Technology Corridor. On Elliot Road from Signal Butte to Hawes roads, the corridor has a strong existing utility infrastructure that is expected to be an asset to future developers.

“Located adjacent to Salt River Project’s transmission lines and the Browning receiving station, the corridor is perfect for companies needing large amounts of redundant, dedicated power,” said Bill Jabjiniak, Mesa’s economic development director. In addition, the Loop 202 intersects the corridor, providing convenient access to the local freeway system.

Riverview Point office park

NEW PROJECTS

COMPASS POINTS

The Chamber has evolved into a strong advocate for business that is also tuned in to the necessary governmental approvals and processes that ensure responsible growth and development. The relationship between the Chamber, the city and businesses is at an all-time high, with the H.E.A.T. Initiative (Healthcare, Education, Aerospace, Tourism/ Technology) as an example. — GEORGE BLISS,

Commercial Realtor

an additional 20-acre development that will result in 250,000 square feet of new office space. The plans, which include the addition of two new office buildings, are projected to create 1,700 new jobs and generate $170 million in sales tax revenue over a 30-year timespan. “Riverview and the new … office buildings are prime examples of a successful mixed-use development project,” Jabjiniak said. “Within steps of each other is a mix of retail, hospitality, sporting/recreation venues and professional business offices.”

4

Light Rail

A 3.1-mile light rail extension is expected to transport an estimated average of 9,800 riders to and from downtown Mesa each day. Those riders will be able to visit the numerous shops and restaurants that line Main Street. “We are confident that the light rail extension will re-energize downtown and continue to provide

unique transit-oriented development opportunities,” Jabjiniak said. The project, which is under construction now and should be completed late next year, will stretch from Sycamore to Mesa Drive.

5

Falcon Field Economic Activity Area

The Falcon Field Economic Activity Area encompasses 35 square miles in Northeast Mesa and is home to approximately 670 companies that have created more than 19,000 jobs. Falcon Field generates an estimated economic impact of more than $2.3 billion to the city, region and state, according to city officials. “Falcon Field is already a leading economic engine for Mesa and the good news is that there is still room for growth,” Mesa Mayor John Giles said. “Everything a business could want is ready and available; from easy freeway access next to a busy general aviation airport to great neighborhoods and restaurants, the Falcon Field area has it all.”

COMPASS POINTS

We would never have attempted nor succeeded in Mesa without (the city’s and Chamber’s) unwavering support. We work in hundreds of municipalities across the country but to have a partner like Mesa is incredible in every facet.

What I’ve heard and believe is that we have big city amenities in a small town atmosphere. Even though we’re such a huge city it seems like people can weave themselves into the fabric of the community. — DENNIS KAVANAUGH,

Mesa City Councilman, (District 3) — DANIEL LUPIEN,
