elcome to the fourth edition of Mesa COMPASS! As in previous years, I’m thrilled to share some of the amazing and innovative accomplishments from the Mesa Chamber of Commerce. You will find articles that spotlight some of our committees, benefits of Chamber membership, and stories that help explain why Mesa is such a great community in which to Live, Work and Play. A new program I’m especially excited about is the Mesa Veterans Program. The Mesa Chamber of Commerce is collaborating with community partners to become a resource switchboard, capable of connecting a veteran with the appropriate organization to assist them with the myriad of issues they face such as health, education and housing. This Chamber program is also focused on workforce development, acting as the intermediary between businesses and veteran candidates. We all know or have heard of veteran’s who are struggling with trying to adjust to life once their military service has ended. This program is designed to assist veterans make the transition and then to celebrate their successes. I also had the opportunity to participate in FIREBALL RUN, which is an emotional eight-day, 2,000-mile journey that is focused on one key goal: finding America’s missing children. Similar to “The Amazing Race,” FIREBALL RUN is a life-sized trivia and driving event that involves 40 teams solving clues, accomplishing tasks all while passing out thousands of flyers of missing children. Although every day brought plenty of excitement, Ivan Martinez and I, team “Mesa Avengers” never forgot the focus of our mission — bring America’s missing children home. Since it started in 2007, I’m proud to say that FIREBALL RUN has aided in the recovery of 45 missing children. As President of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, I am incredibly fortunate to work alongside a city staff and council that care deeply about Mesa and to be surrounded by a wonderful Chamber staff, great board of directors and awesome members. I’m proud to share some of their stories with you here, and look forward to sharing more for many years to come. Remember, “The World Belongs To Those That Show Up!” Sincerely,

INTRO the city core and expanding the area’s economic capabilities. “Light rail is a catalyst for so many opportunities downtown,” Mayor Giles said. “From new restaurants and retail to market rate housing and events, downtown Mesa is the Valley’s next hot spot. There has already been more than $90 million invested along the line. And that is just the beginning.”

Thriving culture

Topping the Southwest Named the best big city in the Southwest, Mesa continues to grow and innovate to offer an excellent quality of life, economic growth and a thriving culture. BY ELISE RILEY

N

early half a million people call Mesa, Arizona home, and there are almost as many reasons why. A thriving community that’s equally attractive to businesses and residents, Mesa is a hub of development and innovation. The nation’s 38th largest city keeps getting bigger … and better … as it turns its eye toward the future.

Quality of life

With nearly five-dozen community parks, nine colleges and universities, worldclass healthcare facilities, and recreation opportunities ranging from hiking and biking to Cactus League Spring Training, Mesa is the place to be. Its 133 square miles include historic neighborhoods and bustling new communities, shopping centers and employment hubs, all making Mesa a great place to raise a family. Those reasons, as well as the fact that Mesa enjoys 325 days of sunshine each year, prompted “Money” magazine to name Mesa the best “Big City in the Southwest.” 6 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

“We are only getting better,” Mesa Mayor John Giles said. “Mesa is a great place to live and raise a family. Mesa Arts Center and our Parks and Recreation Department are national leaders while Apple, Inc. and the new light rail extension make our city attractive to the millennial workforce.”

Economic growth

Growth hasn’t slowed in Mesa — it keeps increasing. Apple is constructing a $2 billion command center in the city, American Traffic Solutions is building its headquarters in Mesa for 600 employees, and Bridgestone and Matheston Gas have broken ground on new plants in Mesa. “Healthcare, education, aviation, technology and tourism will all find a home in Mesa,” said Sally Harrison, president of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce. And now, it’s getting even easier to do business in the city. In addition to its convenient freeways, Mesa recently added a 3.1-mile extension to the Valley’s light rail system, brining more people to

For decades, Mesa has enjoyed a thriving culture with museums and a historic center. Today, light rail and a continued passion for the arts make Mesa an attraction for arts enthusiasts, foodies, and more. “With more than 3,000 restaurants in the city — plus beautiful hotels and resorts — Mesa is a great place to enjoy a night on the town, or a weekend away,” Harrison said. Thousands visit the world-renowned Mesa Arts Center, where national tours of musicians, comedians, and theatre entertain audiences of all ages. For a look at the past, the Arizona Museum of Natural History has the state’s largest collection of fossils, and kids and creativity are the focus at the i.d.e.a. Museum. “Mesa has something for everyone,” Mayor Giles said. It’s hard to disagree.

Mesa selected as one of 8 ‘What Works Cities’ By ELISE RILEY

>

Mesa has been selected to participate in Bloomberg Philanthropies’ What Works Cities, a $42 million initiative to help cities use data and evidence to improve the lives of residents. Mesa and the other eight inaugural cities will receive consultation and support from experts to make local government more effective. Through the program, Mesa will implement open data practices for the first time. The city will also define desired results and share progress with residents. After reviewing their current use of data and identifying challenges, the cities will collaborate with What Works Cities to develop a customized targeted approach to address issues ranging from economic development to public health, job creation and more. In addition to Mesa, the other inaugural cities are Chattanooga, Tennessee; Jackson, Mississippi; Kansas City, Missouri; Louisville, Kentucky; New Orleans, Louisiana; Seattle, Washington; and Tulsa, Oklahoma. One hundred cities will be admitted to the program through 2017. The program, which is organized by Bloomberg Philanthropies, includes a variety of organizations such as Results for America, the Center for Government Excellence at Johns Hopkins University, the Government Performance Lab at the Harvard Kennedy School, Sunlight Foundation and The Behavioral Insights Team.

area. There are a lot of reasons why we should preserve our community’s history. It’s hard to chart a course without knowing from where you’ve come.

Q Vic Linoff

ic Linoff is the president of the Mesa Preservation Foundation. The foundation helps to identify sites of cultural or historic significance and advocate for preservation. A nearly 50year resident of the city, he’s seen it grow from the fanfare of opening Tri-City Mall to the recent Light Rail Expansion. Here are his reflections on how the city’s changed, and what needs to be preserved.

V

Q

Why does preservation matter?

Preservation is more than saving old buildings. It’s important to the economy. It brings in heritage tourism. Historic properties have a greater value, generally, than other properties within the same 8 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

What successes has your group achieved?

The iconic “Diving Lady” sign on Main Street fell in a major storm in 2010. That got us to pull the Mesa Preservation Foundation together very quickly and help restore the sign in 2013, which in the end was about $125,000. Today, she’s up and diving on a regular basis, and she’s not going to fall again.

Do you have a particular site or area that you’re interested in?

Q

We’ve always recognized the significance of the Buckhorn Baths. It’s a nationally known icon — it’s one reason we’ve got Cactus League baseball. It also was the quintessential representation of the burgeoning roadside industry. Four federal highways, 60, 70,80 and 89, all ran through Main Street. The Buckhorn was one of the original roadside tourist attractions on that system. For some very complicated reasons the city was

Tell us about a current project.

One of the things we’re working on is the Citrus Growers building on Broadway off of Country Club. It represents the last example of the citrus industry in the Valley, where crops were sent for processing and packaging. It’s a 60,000-square-foot building – it could be our version of Ghirardelli Square or Faneuil Hall. It has incredible potential for public use that’d also revitalize Broadway. Very often when you do these projects they’re a catalyst for urban renewal.

What’s one way people can experience Mesa’s history today?

Q

You can pick up a walking tour guide in most downtown businesses. It’s a free, self-guided tour of the historic sites. And we worked with the City and Valley Metro to develop history panels on the Light Rail platforms. Each station has a panel that conveys the history of the area. If you’re waiting for a train, you can view the panel and learn about the people and places from the area’s past.

What’s your next focus for the Preservation Foundation?

Q

We’re very actively involved in historic properties in the downtown, particularly the historic core along Main Street. Some of these buildings go back to the turnof-the-century. They’re the last examples of commercial architecture in the city of Mesa. We’re committed to working with the city and property owners to ensure that they’re preserved.

Q

What’s your hope for the future of the city?

If we’re able to restore the commercial core it’ll put us in a position that makes us unique from every other city. People will be able to access these historic buildings, which could mark the start of transforming the city center into a boutique downtown.

MESA CHAMBER COMPASS POINTS

Mesa Chamber of Commerce: On a mission Rich history of commitment to business and community BY ALISON STANTON

F

or more than 100 years, the Mesa Chamber of Commerce has had a prominent and influential role in the city; from advocating for local business owners to helping to promote economic growth, the Chamber truly lives up to its mission of Improving, Promoting and Protecting businesses in Mesa.

Supporting the community

As President Sally Harrison noted, the Chamber is also adept at looking for ways that they can help residents of the local community. A great example of this commitment, she said, is in the Chamber’s new Mesa Veterans Program. While the City of Mesa focuses quite a bit on homeless veterans, Harrison said she wanted the Chamber to take on some of the additional issues that veterans face. In August of 2015, the program was launched. “Our Mesa Veterans Program is really an umbrella; we are not trying to duplicate or take over anyone’s roles,” Harrison said.

Connecting veterans

Drew Trojanowski, Coordinator of the Mesa Veterans Program, said one of its key intentions is to work alongside community partners to be a “switchboard of resource navigation,” helping to connect veterans with the appropriate

organization to assist them with the myriad of issues they face like health, education and housing. “The second focus is workforce development, acting as an intermediary between business and the veteran candidates,” Trojanowski said. “We understand the programs that exist and know who is doing what in Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert, and who is doing it well. For example, a veteran can come in and say ‘hey, I’m on the verge of losing my house,’ or ‘I want to go to school’ and we will not only know what resources are there, but also the specific people who they need to contact who can help them.”

Downtown Mesa is like no other neighborhood on the light rail line. It has the character and feel of classic Main Street. New coffee shops, restaurants and galleries have opened and more concerts, street fairs and celebrations are planned – and that is just the beginning. The next extension to Gilbert Road starts construction soon. John Giles Mayor, City of Mesa

Leadership and integrity

Mark Gaspers, Boeing State and Local Manager and a member of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, said Boeing applauds the Chamber for launching the new Mesa Veterans Program. “At Boeing, we value veterans as part of our team because they bring leadership, integrity and critical skills that are unique to their military experience,” Gaspers said. “As part of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, we look forward to working with the chamber in their efforts to develop this new program to expand opportunities for veterans in our community.” Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide | 9

Aviation Fascination

This annual event is popular with both Chamber members and the local community, Barry said. “Since Mesa has two airports, aviation is definitely a big deal in Mesa.” Local aviation-related businesses bring some of their equipment for the public to see; Boeing brings over an Apache Longbow, the Mesa Police flies in a police

This event has taken place every year for around 102 years, making it as old as the Mesa Chamber itself. “The focus of this event is to recognize small, medium and large businesses that excel at what they do in the community,” Barry said. Around 500 Chamber members typically attend the dinner and awards ceremony, which also includes awards for the Student of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Professor of the Year and Non-Profit of the Year. “It’s really a great program that honors Chamber

Mesa Chamber’s largest event and biggest fundraiser of the year is held at a Chamber member’s golf course, Barry said. The event, which has been held annually for the past several decades, includes plenty of added incentives like a golf ball drop and four hole-in-one giveaways. “It just makes it that much more exciting for the golfer if they have a chance to win a car”, Barry said.

When Mesa business owners speak with Susan Tychman, Director of Membership Development, about joining the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, she enjoys telling them about the many benefits of membership. “I like to talk with them and find out how they are promoting their business, and what they want it to do and how they want it to grow, and then I explain how the Mesa Chamber is a great way to connect with other people,” Tychman said. “It’s all about being part of the community.” One key way that joining the Mesa Chamber of Commerce is beneficial to local business owners, Tychman said, is the large number of events that the Chamber hosts on a regular basis. “I will pull up our website and show potential new members the Events calendar and go through that with them, and discuss our monthly events such as the Lunch Mob, which is a great informal way to meet people,” Tychman said, adding that she will suggest that new members make an effort to attend as many events as they can. Tychman also likes to encourage members to think outside of the proverbial box, and determine how they can network with others outside of their usual circle. “For example, a massage therapist may want to connect with owners of a coffee shop, art gallery or fitness center who might have the space for a massage room and can offer their customer chair massages,” she said. “I also look at the business directory with them and say ‘pick out some businesses that are specific to your industry, and let’s make some connections.’” For more information about joining the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, call 480-9691307 or visit www.mesachamber.org.

Live from Mesa, it’s Mesa Morning Live BY ALISON STANTON

O

nce a month, internationally-acclaimed comedian Mark Cordes hosts “Mesa Morning Live,” a 60-minute television show that features a variety of well-known guests. Over one hundred people gather at 7 a.m. for a tasty catered breakfast and to watch the show, which is taped inside Crescent Crown Distributing in Mesa. Cordes, who has hosted “Mesa Morning Live” since its inception, said he has plenty of wonderful memories from the shows. “I do 12 shows a year and they are all special. Trying to decide which ones are my favorites is like trying to decide which kids are my favorites. Every show has been timely and interesting,” Cordes said. One guest that Cordes especially remembers is Rick Smith, founder and CEO of Taser International. “Rick is such a cool guy, and we talked about how he came up with the idea of the taser, and he told me that every time a person is tased, it means they are not being shot,” Cordes said. “He was really fascinating to speak with, and was very adept at answering questions and everyone got a kick out of listening to him.” Another guest that Cordes said was especially memorable was country artist Billy Dean. Cordes recalls looking out into the audience and noticing more women than usual in the front rows. “I’m glad the women all sat up front because that way they could tell the difference between Billy and me—people are always getting us mixed up,” Cordes said, laughing. Cordes said he truly looks forward hosting “Mesa Morning Live” each month and seeing what each show will bring. “Everyone involved with the show is always on point, and I am excited to be a part of the show”. Questions

WITH TIM SHANEFELTER, CHAIR OF THE MESA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AMBASSADORS GROUP

BY ALISON STANTON

How do you see the Chamber working to get members involved in the community?

Q

The Chamber is definitely very good at making members aware of volunteer opportunities. Being aware of how busy small business owners are, the Chamber is great about emailing reminders of upcoming events and programs. Examples of volunteer activities have included helping to prepare and serve meals to the homeless at Paz de Cristo, and preparing food packets at Feed My Starving Children.

What is the best program the Chamber puts on each month?

What is your favorite part about attending a Chamber Lunch Mob?

I think Taste of Mesa is one of the best programs. It is an informal networking mixer, and it really has no agenda other than to help people make connections and form relationships. What I like about it is that it is very well attended, and businesses are lined up wanting to sponsor it because of its popularity and value. I’ve made many connections with people who I still do business with today, and I’ve helped to connect others as well.

What I love first and foremost is giving back to a community business. The event brings awareness to what the restaurant offers, and many of us frequent them at another date with our friends and family. Also, I always see familiar faces every time I go. It’s a good way to unwind for an hour in the middle of the day, and I always go back to work energized.

Meeting the needs of the many Vision 2020 program targets community needs. BY KRISTINE BURNETT

W

hat’s $18 trillion and climbing daily? The national deficit. As the country’s debt continues to soar, so does the potential for funding cuts to a multitude of health and human services programs at the city, state and national levels. Responding to concerns that federal funding could be significantly impacted as soon as 2020, Congressman Matt Salmon turned a realistic eye to the future by challenging community leaders with identifying ways to sustain invaluable programs in the face of the impending financial crisis. The challenge, launched in 2014, was dubbed Vision 2020: Community Driven Solutions to Meeting Human Needs. Jon McHatton, Congressman Salmon’s Director of Outreach, said Vision 2020 was enthusiastically encouraged, particularly by the Faith-based Neighborhood Partnership Advisory Council. Recognizing the need to always be prepared, the Mesa Chamber’s Nonprofit Vitality Council became an active participant in the quest for creative solutions. “The congressman relies on advisory councils to keep the pulse of the district,” McHatton said. “Rep. Salmon challenged them with determining what their community services would look like if there was no federal funding.”

Finding greatest needs

With this “what if ” scenario in mind, the group began evaluating areas of greatest need. They also began looking at

ways to use federal and/or state funds as seed monies for longterm strategies to maintain the much-needed programs. “More than 100 leaders and community members have been engaged in the ongoing Vision 2020 process,” McHatton said. “Together, they identified the top areas of need in the East Valley as behavioral health, education and homelessness.” While a total loss of federal funding for such programs isn’t likely, the congressman’s challenge sparked important discussions and collaboration throughout the district, which includes Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert and Queen Creek.

Rallying business leaders

Grateful for the Mesa Chamber’s role in hearing the call and rallying businesses and community leaders, McHatton said Vision 2020 would not exist without the chamber’s support. “The discussion of local resources is not necessarily something a congressional office should focus on, as it really should be in the purview of local leaders,” McHatton noted. “When the chamber and its Nonprofit Vitality Council saw the value of Vision 2020, they stepped up and really ran with it. It has and continues to be an amazing show of good people voluntarily coming together to make a difference, now and for the future.” To learn more about Vision 2020 and how you can get involved, visit https://www.facebook.com/ npvcvision2020?fref=ts or call 480-969-1307.

Feed My Starving Children making a difference BY KRISTINE BURNETT

T

he more you give, the more you get back in return.” That’s how Craig Lohman, partner at Mesa-based CPA firm Lohman Company, PLLC, views the many opportunities created by the Mesa Chamber of Commerce for businesses to get involved, give back and make a difference. Secretary/Treasurer of the Mesa Chamber Board of Directors, Lohman is particularly proud of the chamber’s growing community service initiatives. One organization he is grateful to see chamber members embrace is Feed My Starving Children. A nonprofit organization that packages nutrient-rich meals to help feed children around the world, Feed My Starving Children 14 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

has a packing facility in Mesa. Lohman says working with the organization has enabled him, his family and his colleagues to reap numerous personal and professional returns. “The chamber began coordinating volunteer events a couple of years ago along with the City of Mesa on National Make a Difference Day,” Lohman explained. “As a result of the positive response from the business community, Sally Harrison [President and CEO of the Mesa Chamber] initiated our involvement with Feed My Starving Children after it joined the chamber. I attended one of the volunteer events with my family and some of our firm’s employees. That evening, we had around 60 volunteers who were part of the Mesa Chamber group.”

Since then, the chamber has participated in additional packing events at Feed My Starving Children. Lohman says the organization’s Mesa location is one of the biggest and most productive in the country. He attributes the success to good planning, an engaged staff that keeps things fun and strong local support. “They can accommodate volunteers as young as 5 and support the varied needs and capabilities of volunteers,” he said. “The atmosphere fosters connection, competition and camaraderie among participants while educating everyone about the impact they can make.” As a businessman, Lohman appreciates the networking, teambuilding and engagement opportunities presented by giving back, whether through Feed My Starving Children or the many other organizations supported by the chamber. A believer that things often come full circle, Lohman said, “Businesses that take advantage of these opportunities to give back will ultimately have opportunities presented to them.” Lohman embraces Harrison’s efforts to advance community service and involvement among chamber members. While the organizations represent an array of causes, feeding those in need is one that resonates, as evidenced by support for Mesa-based United Food Bank. According to Sergio Paris, Communications Director at United Food Bank, the Mesa Chamber connects the food bank to Mesa businesses and organizations that provide an important source of support for food and fund drives, which turns into food for hungry people. An estimated 1,400 food/fund drives are organized and executed annually by local businesses. To recognize the chamber’s impact and show appreciation for its support, United Food Bank honored Harrison as one of its 2015 Spirit of Philanthropy Award recipients. Harrison, who first became involved with United Food Bank in 2006, unites the local business community in support of the food bank. “Without the support we receive from the Mesa Chamber, we’d be much less of a powerhouse in the community,” Paris said. “They’ve been amazing to us, serving as a constant voice to let people know what we’re doing and how they can help.”

United Food Bank United Food Bank (UFB) began in 1983, as a community response to hunger between several Arizona East Valley cities and United Ways. Today, UFB serves as a Regional Food Distribution Warehouse distributing nearly 21 million pounds of food annually – equivalent to 17.5 million meals – throughout Eastern Maricopa County, Gila and Pinal County; and Southern Navajo and Apache Counties in Arizona. UFB currently supports the hunger relief efforts of more than 200 Community Partners like food pantries, community kitchens and youth programs that help alleviate hunger and food-insecurity for more than 225,000 individuals, including 93,525 children. Community support is vital to UFB’s mission to fight hunger, and that includes numerous food and fund drives throughout the year as well as many strategic partnerships which help extend UFB’s outreach and mission to serve the most vulnerable members of our community.

BUSINESS

Timing is everything Mesa’s business climate helps companies of all size. BY DEBRA GELBART

F

or Heather Smith, being a small-business owner in downtown Mesa is a dream come true. She has grown her successful cookie business, Smitholator Cookie Shop — a bakery and retail store with a nostalgic atmosphere — from a home-based operation to a brick-andmortar location in downtown Mesa in less than three years. “I love that our community leaders are accessible and vested in our city,” she said. “I love that there are residents and businesses that have been here for generations. They are my home and shop neighbors. I love that our business is nestled near three museums, the Mesa Art Center, Mesa Convention Center, city hall, and the new light rail extension.”

Success comes in many sizes

Medium-sized and large businesses in Mesa are thriving, too. Mesa is a magnet for business, said Kim Lofgreen, marketing and business development manager in the City of Mesa’s Office of Economic Development, because “Mesa offers the amenities of a large urban center with a family-friendly, pro-business environment, a culture city leaders purposely foster. City elected officials place a high priority on quality development and understand what it takes to succeed in today’s client-focused economic development environment.” In the meantime, more and more people from Mesa and nearby cities are relying on the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway 16 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

Able Engineering

Airport for convenient transportation. In Fiscal Year 2015, the airport accommodated approximately 1.3 million total passengers. “When total passengers reach 1.8 million, airline operations will have to move to a larger terminal facility located on the east side of the airport,” said Brian Sexton, the public information officer for the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority.

Top-notch educational opportunities

Mesa has a well-educated population; more than 34 percent age 25 and better have an associate’s degree or higher, Lofgreen said. The city has 14 institutions of higher learning with more than 40,000 students enrolled. Recently recruited legacy liberal arts institutions Benedictine University, Upper Iowa University and Wilkes University are options for students, along with ASU Polytechnic, A.T. Still University and Mesa Community College. Together, “they provide thousands of degreed professionals with specialized skills for an extensive workforce pipeline for forwardthinking companies,” Lofgreen said.

Bringing business expansion

As a result, here are just some of the companies that soon will expand in Mesa: Able Engineering: arrived in Mesa

in 2013 and now employs more than 450 employees. Able will expand its current Mesa campus by 50,000 sq. ft. and add 100 more employees. American Traffic Solutions: will move its headquarters to Mesa’s Riverview area and bring 600 jobs. Apple: its Global Command Center will employ 150 full-time employees and 300-500 construction and contract workers. DriveTime / GO Financial: these sister companies have expanded their Mesa operations and brought GO Financial’s corporate headquarters to Mesa. The companies will hire 700 new employees over the next three years. Marriott Courtyard at Gateway Airport: The 99-room hotel at Power Rd. and Ray Rd. opens early October 2015.

Connected and supported

Smith points out that Mesa-based businesses can count on the Mesa Chamber of Commerce for support. “I don’t think a day goes by without interacting with someone from the Chamber,” she said. “The Chamber makes sure I am connected and supported. Whether connecting me with a potential client, ordering custom cookies, having our shop host an event or just checking in on us, the Chamber does a great job of making fellow members and others aware of our business.”

Prior to the completion of light rail through Downtown Mesa, the city had seen significant interest in this area and now is positioned to see transit-oriented growth and similar redevelopment projects come to fruition. This connectivity is another amenity enjoyed by Mesa, recently named “The Best Place to Live” in the Southwestern United States (Money.com, 2015). Chris Brady City Manager, City of Mesa

Safety, first and always SDI/Daicel, which manufactures micro gas generators and upload initiators for automotive safety devices, has been located in Mesa since 1992. In 2009, all of the company’s North American manufacturing operations were consolidated in Mesa. “That decision was largely based on the company’s long-term harmonious relationship with the City of Mesa,” said Bryan Fossen, the general manager of the Mesa plant. The micro gas generators are used in fire suppression systems and for seat belt safety, and “almost every automotive original equipment manufacturer has used SDI’s air bag initiators,” Fossen said. Each week, SDI makes more than 1.5 million devices using precision automation. In 2004, SDI was named an OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Star. SDI is the only manufacturer of its kind in the U.S. to achieve this recognition, which is given to exemplary worksites with comprehensive, successful safety and health management

systems. In 2014, the company successfully attained a five-year recertification. “The company has produced more than 1 billion initiators during the past 25 years without a recall,” Fossen said. “It’s estimated that SDI’s products have saved more than 50,000 lives during that period.” After the 2008 recession, the company reorganized and streamlined its workforce. In 2000, SDI Mesa produced approximately 30 million automotive initiators and gas generators, Fossen said, with close to 700 employees. By contrast, the company plans to sell about 90 million units this year, relying on 400 employees.

Investing wisely Transamerica Financial Advisors, Inc. (TFA), a Mesa financial services company, is committed to creating investment opportunities for American families regardless of their net worth. “Our goal is to bring strategies typically reserved for the wealthy and educate people about those strategies at kitchen tables across North America,” said Jason Wiseman, an investment advisor representative with TFA. “More importantly, we have a business platform that allows our agents to focus on working with families.” He explained that the company’s easily accessible, online platform means no minimum investment is required from clients. “This is a game changer for someone who might be just beginning to invest,” he said. For its emphasis on helping the middle class and efforts to “do the right thing every time whether it’s convenient or not,” his office was a finalist in 2015 for the Mesa Chamber of Commerce Small Business

of the Year Award. “This was a real honor, given that someone looked at our firm and thought enough of our service to put our name in the running for the award,” said Wiseman, who opened the Mesa office of Transamerica Financial Advisors in 2007. When he started there, Wiseman was the sole producer. Today, his office has more than 40 licensed agents, and the plan is to double that number in the next six months. “It’s an exciting time to be in business in Mesa,” Wiseman said.

Piloting success CAE Oxford Aviation Academy, which trains cadets from 15 different nations to become the next generation of airline pilots, has been located at Falcon Field in Mesa since 2007. “CAE was drawn to northeast Mesa because of the established airport facilities, quality of life, and support structure for the cadets and staff,” said Jerod Bybee, the manager of the academy. “Excellent flying weather and open space make Mesa and the Phoenix Valley a great place to train pilots.” Cadets are sponsored by many major international airlines, including British Airways, Easy Jet, Turkish, Emirates, Air China, Vietnamese and Japan Airlines. Cadets spend up to 12 months in Mesa training in aircraft and simulators before returning home to begin work as airline flight officers, Bybee said. CAE, with its updated aircraft and simulator fleets and modern flight and safety technology, provides employment

and benefits to more than 150 employees and generates $30 million annually in foreign currency into the economy of Mesa and Arizona, Bybee said. The company’s growth is impressive, too. “When we started in the early 1990s, the school consisted of 10 aircraft, 12

instructors and 45 students,” Bybee said. Today, CAE operates a modern fleet of 57 aircraft, seven simulators, 75 instructors, 35 mechanics and train up to 300 cadets at a time. “We want to continue to be good neighbors and provide a positive impact to our local community.”

H

igh profile projects such as the redevelopment of the Fiesta District with the transformation of the Fiesta Corporate Campus provide the City of Mesa with a new Class A office space, will attract new businesses, create more highpaying jobs and positively impact Mesa’s overall economy. Fiesta Corporate Campus will soon take over the vacant Macy’s department store at Fiesta Mall which closed in 2014. This unique and modern $21 million two-story corporate office complex can accommodate up to 2,000 employees. Construction on the 158,000 square-foot project is expected to begin later this year and will take approximately 18 to 24 months for completion. Considered to be one of Mesa’s most important business projects, the Fiesta District has seen more than $439 million of capital investment since 2012. “Conveniently located at the crossroads of Loop 101 and US 60, and encompassing 1.15 square miles, the Fiesta District has an extensive infrastructure and is now emerging as a premier employment center for healthcare, medical services, education, advanced

business and financial services, as well as retail and entertainment,” said Bill Jabjiniak, economic development director for the City of Mesa. The redevelopment of this area has led to unique opportunities like the Fiesta Corporate Campus for creative developer Scott Jackson. Since 2012, the Fiesta District has attracted public and private investments, including $12 million in streetscape improvements along Southern Avenue, the construction of a $15 million police substation, and the $20 million Centrica project, according to the City of Mesa’s Office of Economic Development. Today, several major employers and more than 7,000 people are occupying the Fiesta District including Synergy Homecare, Hilton Hotel, Sears, Banner iCare and Sonora Quest Laboratories, along with anchoring institutions such as Mesa Community College, Banner Desert Medical Center and Cardon Children’s Medical Center, which are critical to its success. TRANSPORTATION education and other destinations,” says Corinne Holliday, public information specialist with Valley Metro. “It makes it convenient to connect to Mesa and discover — or rediscover — its rich history, and vibrant arts and culture scene.” According to Holliday, the extension through downtown Mesa to Mesa Drive will add approximately 5,000 new riders and attract additional development to Mesa. This means good news for businesses along the extension, which are further boosted by Valley Metro’s Shop On Main Street program.

Light rail extension helps Valley re-discover Mesa Provides access to jobs, education, attractions. BY MICHELLE JACOBY

T

his summer marked a turning point for Valley commuters — especially those living and working in the East Valley — when the Central Mesa light rail extension began service, connecting riders with downtown Mesa. “Today, a dream for many becomes a reality,” said Mesa Mayor John Giles at the opening celebration. “Light rail is rejuvenating downtown Mesa, offering residents and visitors across the Valley an

opportunity to travel to new destinations and discover Mesa.”

Rail line’s first major extension

The region’s first extension, the Central Mesa project adds three miles of light rail, with four new stations located on Main Street at Alma School Road, Country Club Drive, Center Street and Mesa Drive. “[The extension makes] Valley Metro Rail a 23-mile system and provides Valley residents with better access to jobs,

Designed to encourage residents to shop local and support businesses along the light rail line, the program works in conjunction with the METRO Max Rewards card, giving riders exclusive savings, discounts, deals and giveaways. “Light rail is a catalyst for so many opportunities. There has already been more than $90 million in new construction or redevelopment along the line since construction began in the summer of 2012,” Holliday says. And if you think downtown Mesa is the end of the line for light rail in Mesa, think again. Valley Metro is currently working on the Gilbert Road extension, which will extend further east from Mesa Drive to Gilbert Road. The 1.9-mile project, which is projected to open in 2018, will include two stations and a park-and-ride. “The extensions are two of seven planned or under construction that will create a 66-mile system by 2034,” says Holliday.

Getting some prime ‘air’ time 2 full-service airports keep Mesa flying high for the future BY MICHELLE JACOBY

F

or Mesa residents and businesses, a glimpse into the city’s future can be seen by, literally, looking up. That’s because the East Valley city of nearly 465,000 residents has the enviable distinction of being home to not one, but two full-service airports. Here’s a look:

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway

Formerly Williams Air Force Base, Williams Gateway Airport officially opened in 1994. In 2008, the airport’s name was changed to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. Operated by the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority — a cooperative effort by Mesa, Gilbert, Queen Creek, Gila River Indian Community, Phoenix, and Apache Junction—the airport serves more than 40 companies and 38 cities with nonstop service via Allegiant Air. Elite Airways also offers nonstop service to San Diego. In addition to commercial airline service, Gateway is developing as an international aerospace center with aircraft maintenance, modification, testing and pilot training. Thanks to the area’s skilled labor force, excellent year-

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway

round flying weather, three expansive runways averaging 10,000 feet, and access to international markets, the airport is a prime location for global-minded companies. “The aerospace industry has realized Gateway Airport is the place to do business,” says Brian Sexton, Gateway Airport’s public information officer, “With over 10,400 jobs supported by activities at Gateway, combined with new hotels, restaurants and homes coming online, the Gateway area is the Valley’s preferred place to work and live.”

Falcon Field

Originally a training base for World War II combat pilots, the Falcon Field of today is a major general aviation hub, serving as an alternative for civilian and military aviation uses such as business, recreation and flight training. Owned and operated by the City of Mesa, the airport is home to more then 80 businesses, which provide more than 1,000 jobs. Land and hangars are available for aerospace and aviation businesses; while aircraft services and rental car companies serve corporate and private aircraft owners, businesses, law enforcement and medical flights. Falcon Field is currently undergoing improvements, which include a $2 million terminal building renovation that will increase useable areas, upgrade interior spaces, and update and expand the terminal’s exterior. “The former terminal was more than 40 years old, so this renovation will provide pilots and visitors with a beautiful and functional entrance to Mesa,” says airport director Corinne Nystrom. “Falcon Field is often the first impression visitors have of the city and region. The terminal improvements were designed to make it a source of pride for the community.”

The SR-24 ‘Gateway Freeway’ will bring visibility to Gateway Airport and the undeveloped land east and south of the airport for future development. Long-term, SR 24 development to the east will be a significant factor in the airport’s ability to attract businesses and increase air service because of highway accessibility to the airport. Jane L. Morris, A.A.E. Executive Director Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport

esirable climate, a hometown atmosphere and inspiring desert scenery matched by countless living choices continue to make Mesa a great place to live. Whether you are a young adult, high tech professional, growing family or active senior, you’ll find your special place among historic neighborhoods, a reviving downtown, active adult venues, familyfriendly communities and nationally acclaimed master planned developments.

Roots in excellence

A Mesa resident and Realtor for decades, Pamela Frestedt of the Realty Excellence Group says what attracts people to Mesa is an extremely well-run city, an established infrastructure, reasonably priced houses, inviting parks and excellent schools. She points out that she and her husband, a Mesa native, chose to raise their family in his hometown because of the education opportunities and deep sense of security that comes from knowing your wonderful neighbors. Those outside Arizona are often surprised at the seven historic neighborhoods with homes that might seem more like you would find in the Midwest. Frestedt says that people fall in love with the charming features of these homes, some that were built in the early 1900s. Basements, elevated porches, fine architectural detailing and towering, mature landscaping make them especially desirable. She warns that these homes don’t go on the market often. Residential options that continue to be popular are communities such as Mountain Bridge, Las Sendas, Leigh Crossing and Eastmark, the latter of which

was among the nation’s 10 top-selling, master planned communities in 2015.

City renaissance

As the railroad sparked growth in the 1880s, a new light rail extension is driving a center city renaissance. Jeff McVay, the city’s manager of downtown transformation, points out that what makes the new transportation hub standout is Mesa’s long-established downtown. He emphasizes that it is an authentic, traditional town with families living in the same neighborhoods generation after generation. That classic, American town appeal is reinforced by the residents and visitors who attend events and frequent locally owned shops and cafés. Appealing to Millennials, seniors and those seeking a relaxed, urban lifestyle are a symphony of cultural, retail, recreational, dining and art opportunities within a short stroll. John Wesley, director of planning, says there is more downtown residential to come. A second phase of Encore for seniors is being constructed. One potential project is the Artspace work-live studios, which are designed to feature street-level gallery space for the artisans who live and create above. For those looking to retire in the Southwest, Mesa’s manufactured housing parks and active adult resorts deliver some of the most attractive and affordable places to retire in the country. There’s a place in Mesa for everyone to call home.

Eastmark ranked among top communities in U.S. BY JOAN WESTLAKE

ocated on the former General Motors Proving Ground in southeast Mesa, Eastmark was recognized in early 2015 as the eighth top-selling, master planned community in the nation. Contributing to its success, says Garilyn Bourgeois, director of marketing, is the focus of the developer, DMB Associates Inc., on Eastmark being the total live-work-play community while supporting the robust growth of southeast Mesa. “It has a great location,” she said. “You are right at the intersection of three highways, easy access to the airport and close to employment and educational resources,” She adds that “connectivity” is a key element at Eastmark. DMB first looked at providing

L

residents a lifestyle where things are close by — recreation, education and employment corridors. The Eastmark Great Park, operated by the City of Mesa, quickly has become a popular public green area featuring concerts and celebrations, connecting residents with visitors and nearby neighborhoods. “As we developed” she continued, “We looked inside to make Eastmark a place of connectivity for our families, entrepreneurs and educators. Quickly, our residents began forming their own culture, starting groups such as a wine

club, stroller fitness sessions and yoga classes. They want to be part of something bigger and to be innovative.” She adds that Eastmark targeted celebrating the characteristics of that part of the Valley through DMB’s traditional community outreach efforts. What they heard was residents wanted pathways, outdoor spaces, being able to ride bicycles to the store or schools and to feel they are truly connected to the neighborhoods. “We have such a diverse community — every

nationality, well educated, every type of blended family, all ages, large families, singles and active adults. Everyone feels they are appreciated here. And they are encouraged to take leadership roles. For example, the Hunter family, whose father is in the service, initiated planting flags around the parks for the Fourth of July, Memorial Day and Veterans Day.” Bourgeois recommends that with nine builders featuring 50 floor plans, the Visitor Center is the best place to start to explore which Eastmark home might be your choice.

onderful weather has been the magnet for retirees who have flocked to Mesa since the first visitor basked in the warm sun and said to heck with going back to scraping ice and driving on slippery roads. Locally known as snowbirds, many spend fall, winter and spring in Arizona and then take summer vacations to travel, visit relatives and meet up with neighbors and friends not lucky enough yet to have migrated to Mesa. Craig Ahlstrom, president and CEO of the Farnsworth Development Company, has been involved with Dreamland Villas for 35 years. This active adult community welcomed its first seniors in 1959. He says Mesa has always been popular because it is affordable, safe, welcoming, offers great cultural options, enjoys spectacular desert vistas and is close to great recreation from golf and tennis to hiking trails and boating. In addition to amenity-rich adult communities, housing choices include historic home neighborhoods, RV parks, senior apartment complexes and some of the nation’s most popular master planned developments. For some, Mesa’s downtown offers homes and apartments that offer cultural, artistic, dining and social activities within walking distance. A series of rarely congested freeways and nearby Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport as well as Phoenix Sky Harbor are transportation options making travel around the Valley and to destinations beyond easily accessible. The new downtown Light Rail now makes attending athletic games and events in Tempe and Phoenix a pleasant ride. Over the decades, Ahlstrom notes that one change he has seen is that seniors are even more active. He points out that use

of the fitness center at Dreamland Villas increased so much that after the facility was doubled in size, they built a second to meet resident demand. Another recent trend is empty nesters from Phoenix moving to Mesa senior communities to take advantage of the resort-style living and all that continues to make Mesa a retirement dream.

MADELYN MERCER SKYLINE HIGH SCHOOL “Skyline High School is really close knit in student life — it’s like a giant family,” says Madelyn Mercer, a threesport athlete, Student Council junior vice president, and director of the spirit committee. Mercer raves about the school’s new 1:1 computer plan, with laptops for each student. “Everything from classwork to homework is in one place, and it’s beneficial for taking notes and looking things up,” she says. After graduating, Mercer plans to go to medical school to become an oncologist.

said ‘veteran services,’” says student and Marine Corp veteran Keith Taylor. “There wasn’t a single question they weren’t prepared to answer, and it’s been a phenomenal experience ever since.” After earning his associate’s degree in recreational therapy, Taylor plans to combine his background in personal training and working with service dogs to improve the health of veterans with physical limitations or other disabilities.

ANDRES VALLEJO ASU POLYTECHNIC “Because we’re a small campus, students can interact and engage with professors—and they’re amazing,” says Andres Vallejo, a senior working toward his Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a concentration in Manufacturing. Earlier this year, he traveled to Peru with the GlobalResolve club to build an aquaponics system for an orphanage. Currently, Vallejo is working with Honeywell for his capstone project. “We attract lots of different companies, and those are opportunities I couldn’t have gotten on another campus,” he says.

The new Student Enrollment Center continues the college’s dedication to student success by offering a one-stop shop for services such as registration, advising, cashiers and financial aid.

Liberatore plans to pursue sports journalism, telecommunications, and public relations—and ultimately make it to Major League Baseball as a broadcaster.

JOE SHORTALL A.T. STILL UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE IN ARIZONA “Doing humanitarian work, I’ve seen how delicate life can be,” says Joe Shortall, who left a career in business to become an osteopathic physician. “ATSU stood out to me, because their mission is geared toward impacting the underserved. Starting in year two, you begin seeing patients one day a week at community health centers around the nation—that’s unique.” Shortall plans to focus on public health within the Latino community, as well as ongoing work with Doctors for Global Health.

Funding came from community development block grants as well as Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community, and the partners include the City of Mesa, Mesa Public Schools, Mesa Community College, and A New Leaf: MesaCAN. Staffing includes two full-time city employees and Americorp volunteers. “What makes us unique is that we stay with the student from beginning to end,” says Trethaway. “Our vision is that, when a student or an adult wants to get into education or get back into it, we help them persist. Ted Polakowski wasn’t used to seeing sellouts. But the Oakland Athletics’ director of minor league operations saw four of them during the 2015 Cactus League spring training season – the team’s first at Mesa’s Hohokam Stadium. It’s a fete he attributes somewhat to the stadium’s long history of hosting spring training ball. “It’s interesting. A lot of people are married to that facility and they’re happy

to see someone using it. Even the fan base coming from Oakland really liked it. We’re up on attendance and hopefully we can repeat that going forward,” Polakowski said. A Chicago Cubs spring training home since 1979, Hohokam is actually a sort of homecoming for the A’s. Hohokam was the club’s spring home from 1972 to 1974. This time, however, the A’s did some sprucing up before starting spring training. Some of the Hohokam

improvements include: adding about 26,000 square feet to the team’s offices and workout space at nearby Fitch Park; updated concession stands; a new HD video board and new grass berm seats.

Sloan settles in

In 2014, the Cubs opened their new spring training home, the $99 million Sloan Park complex, near the intersection of loops 101 and 202. In 2015, the Cubs enjoyed a year of spring training record attendance, topping 222,000 fans, up from nearly 214,000 in 2014. Justin Piper, Chicago Cubs general manager of spring training business operations, says the records should keep breaking as the team sees more success on the field. “The Cubs have had a very strong player development system during the rebuild. A lot of those players now are at the major league level contributing to a very successful season,” Piper noted. “This past spring there was starting to be a lot of optimism, between those players coming along and some of the off-season acquisitions. ... That’s what drove the attendance.” The Wrigley-esque architecture of the park also caught the attention of locals and travelling Cubs fans, Piper added. The site has a left field wall similar to Wrigley’s, familiar brick behind home 42 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

plate and a Wrigley Field marquee replica, among other similarities.

Community assets

Both facilities are also seeing heavy use by the community. The Arizona Rookie League and Fall League both play games at Hohokam and Sloan. The multi-field complexes also host men’s senior baseball leagues, youth sports events, the Arizona Beer Festival (at Sloan) and collegiate games. Near Sloan, Riverview Park offers a popular 8-acre fishing lake, kids play area and fields for sporting events and tournaments. The next spring training season will also welcome the Sheraton Mesa Hotel at Wrigleyville West. It’s rare to see a hotel offering on the grounds of a spring training site, said Piper. “Guests can walk a hundred yards to a game,” he added.

LOOKING AHEAD

Economic development projects boost Mesa’s landscape T he city of Mesa is continuously leveraging key assets and focusing on economic development. Building a vibrant economy not only enhances the quality of life for Mesa residents, but it strengthens the city and creates an attractive place where people want to live, work, and play. Several ‘game changing’ economic development projects are not only gaining the attention of new residents, but increasing tourism and drawing employers from industries such as healthcare, education, aerospace, tourism and technology. Committed to bringing new life to downtown Mesa in areas such as entertainment, night life, and market-rate housing, the City of Mesa acknowledges

the transformation will be successful largely in part to the arrival of the Central Mesa light rail extension. With the addition of 3.1 miles of service, four new stations along Main Street began operation on Aug. 22. The light rail is expected to extend to Gilbert Road by 2018. “Light rail will drive transit-oriented development downtown, which will bring mixed-use residential and commercial development breathing new life into the area,” said Bill Jabjiniak, economic development director for the City of Mesa. “Two universities have already expanded downtown and several destination restaurants are looking at adding locations.” Early next year, Apple will begin renovations to its building located at the Elliot Road Technology Corridor. “This is a landmark project, one of

THE VISTAS PAVILION AT LAS SENDAS

Apple’s largest facility investments in its history,” Jabjiniak said. “Apple’s presence will bring tremendous credibility to the Elliot Road Technology Corridor as a premier location for technology companies, high-tech campuses, and world-class data centers. The Falcon District is a strategic priority as the City of Mesa prepares to launch the new Falcon District brand, showcasing this attractive location for aerospace, aviation, and defense technologies, and hosting major international players such as Boeing, MD Helicopters and Nammo Talley. As Mesa’s second and largest airport, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is a regional economic asset because of its prime location. According to a 2013 report conducted by the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University, the airport generates $1.3 billion in annual economic impact for the State and supports 10,470 jobs in the region.
