elcome to the Superstition Mountain area and the community of Apache Junction, Gold Canyon, East Mesa. We have something to offer everyone. The Apache Trail’s irresistible beauty spans miles of deserts, mighty canyons, jagged mountain peaks and sparkling desert lakes that attract outdoor enthusiasts of any age.
Mountain. In spring, cactus blooms and colorful desert wild flowers are simply gorgeous while in summer visitors can witness lightning storms above the mountain. An occasional winter snowfall that dusts the surrounding mountain peaks is the perfect setting for our blue skies and beautiful sunsets. This beautiful desert is home to many types of wildlife including birds, bobcats, coyotes and even a few black bears.
Apache Junction is the gateway to outdoor adventure and scenery, The Apache Trail begins at the Junction and quickly reaches Canyon Lake and the old stagecoach stop at Tortilla Flat; an authentic remnant of an old west town. Soon the Trail becomes a dirt road with hairpin turns and steep cliffs offering scenic vistas as it passes Apache Lake and approaches Roosevelt Lake, which is nestled at the foot of the Superstition Mountain Range within the Tonto National Forest. Several breathtaking desert lakes including Canyon, Apache, Saguaro and Roosevelt feature boating, water skiing, fishing and camping. Paddle wheel boats offer cruises across both Canyon Lake and Saguaro Lake.
In addition to the sights and outdoor experience, Apache Junction offers many events throughout the year. Each November on Veterans Day we honor America’s bravest during The Veterans Day Parade as part of the Festival of the Superstitions. We take pride in several fine golf courses, including the award-winning Gold Canyon Golf Resort. Take a drive out US Route 60 to the annual Arizona Renaissance Fair or the beautiful Boyce Thompson Arboretum. The Apache Junction Performing Arts Center is host to many musical performances throughout the winters and our award-winning Lost Dutchman Marathon has been featured as one of the best small marathons in the country.
The Trail also hosts Goldfield, a ghost town that once was a boomtown during the late nineteenth century. Stroll down Goldfield’s Main Street and explore its many shops and historic buildings. Tour the historic Mammoth Gold Mine and visit the Goldfield Museum. Pan for gold, take a ride on Arizona’s only narrow-gauge train or witness an old west gun fight performed by the famous Goldfield Gunfighters! Spend a fun-filled day, rich in Wild West history.
Your first stop should be the Visitors Center, located in the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce building, for local maps, brochures, information and friendly, helpful people whose goal is to assist you in finding the treasured experience you seek. I hope you enjoy your stay in Apache Junction and decide to come back again and again.
Visitors may also explore the Superstition Mountain Museum, which hosts the history and artifacts of this dynamic region. With a plethora of Native American, natural history and geology exhibits, this attraction is ideal for all ages. Experience the striking year-round beauty of the Sonoran Desert on one of many hiking trails or off-road trails, where stately Saguaro cactus merge with the Superstition

ABOUT THE CHAMBER
I
t doesn’t get any better than this. In the shadow of the majestic Superstition Mountains, the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce represents a diverse group of businesses located in a varied geographic region extending east of the metropolitan Phoenix area in Pinal County. In the early 1960s, a flourishing business community was forming along the Apache Trail. In June 1960, the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce incorporated for the purpose of “fostering and promoting social, economic, commercial, industrial, agricultural and civic interests of the area of Apache Junction, Pinal County, Arizona, and its trade area.� As with most chambers of commerce, business leaders felt the need for representation as a business community, and for a group to promote the thenunincorporated community of Apache Junction. Today, the Apache Junction Chamber partners with federal, state and local entities, community organizations, and the business community to create an environment that is attractive to positive economic growth and opportunities. With the support of our members, the Chamber will continue to represent their interests, develop programs that give value to their membership, and give members the needed support that allows them to grow and prosper. Celebrating 50+ years in operation, the Chamber offers benefits and advocacy for nearly 425 Chamber members. Serving the areas surrounding Apache Junction, the Chamber facility also houses the Apache Junction Visitor Center. This Arizona Office of Tourism designated visitor center accommodates over 35,000 visitors annually while receiving thousands of phone calls and distributing information for relocation and tourism. The Apache Junction Chamber is focused on giving the business community the opportunity to affordably advertise and network while advocating for business on a local, state, and federal level. The EVCCA (East Valley Chamber of Commerce Alliance) represents more than 7,500 member firms from the Ahwatukee Foothills, Apache Junction, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Queen Creek, Scottsdale and Tempe Chambers of Commerce. for attractions so he applied for a permit to operate a zoo. He, along with a chimpanzee named Jimmie, started Arizona’s first zoo in the 1930’s and began to add animals until he had established a considerable collection. In 1945, he sold his thriving business to Jack and Beverly Anderson, whom most consider the founders of AJ.

AREA HISTORY
APACHE JUNCTION
In the 1880’s, two important events happened; the Apache chief Geronimo surrendered to the U.S. Army and gold was discovered. Once word got out about the gold, a boomtown called Goldfield was established. Within five years however, the picture had changed; the gold was played out and the town deserted.
In 1959, construction began on a movie set to promote the area to the film industry. With its breathtaking backdrop of the Superstition Mountains, Apacheland Movie Ranch became a popular location for western movies and the stars who enjoyed filming there. After surviving two fires, Apacheland closed in 2004. Apache Junction became an incorporated city in November 1978. Since then it has grown from a small town with a fascinating history to a city with an exciting plan for its future.
Early in the 1900s the Mesa-Roosevelt Road (later named the Apache Trail) was constructed, followed by a large dam on the Salt River. With the Roosevelt dam in place, water and power were accessible and growth began in earnest in the valley below. With that, Arizona’s first governor, George P. Hunt, planned a road that would run between Phoenix and Globe and the new highway opened in 1922. George Cleveland Curtis, a traveling salesman from Utah, also arrived in 1922. He set up a tent and started selling water and sandwiches to people traveling the dusty roads. Curtis realized his good fortune to be so well positioned. He filed a homestead claim and poured the foundation for a building that would become the Apache Junction Inn. When tourists began to winter in the area because of wonderful dry air, mild temperatures and beautiful scenery, his dreams began to come true. Curtis understood that with the influx of winter visitors would come the need

GOLD CANYON
Gold Canyon is a small community nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Superstition Mountains. It is an eclectic blend of old and the new, the wild and the tame, the luxurious and the rustic. All this and it is only 35 minutes from Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix. What was formerly a cattle ranch, is now a thriving community of 20,000+ people who love living in the shadow of the majestic Superstition Mountains. With its perfect desert climate, unmatched scenery, and small-town hospitality, Gold Canyon lives up to its reputation as “the lost gold” of the Superstition Mountains. Fun events that occur annually are: The Gold Canyon Arts Festival the last Saturday in January; Arizona’s only Renaissance Festival in February and March; musical performances hosted by the Gold Canyon Arts Council; and art tours and exhibits throughout the fall and winter seasons sponsored by the Artists of the Superstitions. On Veteran’s Day weekend each November we take time to honor our veterans with a parade and tribute ceremony which kicks of the FESTIVAL OF THE SUPERSTITIONS, a free public event held in Flatiron Community Park. Don’t forget about all there is to do in February, our busiest month. The Renaissance Festival, held in Gold Canyon, starts on President’s Day and runs through April 1, so take the family out for a medieval good time! LOST DUTCHMAN DAYS also takes place in February and is considered our largest community event. It spans over three days and includes activities such as a parade, dance, carnival, live music and rodeos.
I
n November 1964, the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce launched plans to sponsor a public event called Lost Dutchman Day. It would be a one-day event held on January 23, 1965 at the Bayless shopping center and the Superstition Inn. The events would include a pancake breakfast, equestrian competition, the Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsored barbeque and an art show sponsored by the Mesa Art League. The Red Mountain Ranch was set to put on an exhibition of horse riding and there would be a greased-pig contest for the children. Any child catching a pig got to keep the pig. Other plans included a street dance, street carnival, sidewalk sales, and an exhibit of rodeo tricks. A fast-draw exhibit by the Colt.45 Peacemakers from Scottsdale and Apacheland Raiders from the Apacheland movie studio were booked. At that time, there was a small rodeo grounds just south of the Apache Trail near present-day Broadway Road. The Chamber members hoped this would become an annual event and extend to more days of fun.
The first Lost Dutchman Day was held on January 23, 1965 and was a very successful, with attendance over 3,000. The event grew larger as the years went on and is now the largest community event held in Apache Junction Today, approximately 25-30,000 people attend the multiple-day event, which spreads across the community in several different locations. The event now includes a golf tournament, carnival, rodeo, parade, Johnsonville Brat&Beer party, dinner and dance, pageant and art show.

• The population of Apache Junction more than doubles in the winter months, with over 50,000 winter visitors coming to enjoy the beautiful winter weather and the average temperature of 75˚. • Apache Junction enjoys nearly 300 sunny days per year. • Snow does occasionally fall in the Superstition Mountains, with an elevation of 5059 feet.
• Arizona’s first zoo was located in Apache Junction, started by the founder of Apache Junction, George Cleveland Curtis in the early 1930s. • Apacheland Movie Ranch (Apacheland Studio) was a prime location for filming western movies in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. • Although though commonly debated by geologists, the formation of the Superstition Mountains could date as far back as 25 million years ago. • Gold is said to have been first found in the area in 1864.

APACHE JUNCTION VISITOR CENTER
T
he Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce at 567 West Apache Trail is an officially recognized Arizona Office of Tourism Visitor Center. With over 35,000 visitors coming through the center every year, the facility is the sixth most visited center in Arizona. The quality customer service, provided by a team of four staff and 20 volunteers, gives this center a fantastic reputation among visitor centers. The depth and breadth of information available makes it a one-stop shop for tourist information.
AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
Apache Junction is the gateway to fantastic outdoor tourism opportunities to the east and a cosmopolitan culture to the west. For both visitors and residents, the Apache Junction Visitor Center provides a 3,600 square foot facility full of local business information, along with multiple racks of Arizona tourist information. The facility features a wall of current event notices and attractions in the area. If you are looking for fun, something to eat, a particular specialty item, relocation information or the perfect place to relax, stop by the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center and check out what we have to offer.

he Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Program consists of an exclusive group of business professionals who serve as advocates for the Chamber and business community. They actively attend Chamber events and Ribbon Cuttings which welcome new businesses and help them thrive. Together, they learn the internal operations of the Chamber and work with the staff to increase membership involvement, recruitment and retention.

obert Wasson was the winner of the Gordon Hill Spirit of Service Award for the 2017/18 season and was recognized for this achievement at our Volunteer Luncheon held in April 2018 at the ever-so-beautiful Paseo, overlooking the Superstition Mountains. Robert joined the Visitor Center Volunteers in September 2010 and has been a vital part of our team for 8 long years. His extensive knowledge of the area, and virtually everything else, has been a great asset to the Visitor Center. Robert enjoys biking, cooking, reading and photography and he brings his experiences with him to “work” each time he comes, sharing his stories with thousands of guests each year. Robert is not just a wonderful volunteer, but also a terrific father, grandfather, veteran and friend. We’d like to thank him for his service and dedication to our organization and his community.
