The year 2022 was one of clarity. The COVID pandemic affected each person in some way during 2021 and 2020, taking away much of what we loved. This year brought us closer to what we have loved over the years or have just been introduced to. We were given clarity when these things were taken away, but as we returned to some semblance of normalcy in 2022, we went back to the things we love about our city. This year resulted in helping many of us realize that we have a deep love for Fort Collins and all there is to do and see. This publication, now in its 33rd year, is evidence of that sentiment.

Best of CSU is a publication for the community featuring results of the 2022 survey, picked by you, the voters. In this edition of Best of CSU, we focused on what the community loves. 47 distinct categories of love to be exact. We have heard from you all and compiled the crème of the crop. This year was spent trying new things and solidifying what has been. Whether it’s the best hike or the best fried chicken, we have everything from past award winners looking to maintain their hierarchy to newcomers trying to make a name for themselves.

In 2022, you loved being able to enjoy the beautiful outdoors, the best restaurants, and our great university. WELCOME TO FORT COLLINS

There are few places in the United States with as many opportunities as Fort Collins. Being Colorado’s 4th largest city, Fort Collins has continually been glorified as one of the best places to live, and for good reason. Whether you are in Fort Collins to attend CSU or are building out your life, it does not take long for this great city to strengthen its grip on your heart with blissful outdoor scenery and distinct, delicious restaurants.

Established in 1864, Fort Collins has grown into a city that is full of life and unexpected adventures. With a population of 168,538, Fort Collins is home to over 600 restaurants and 20 breweries. Oh, and did we mention 300 days of sunshine and 365 days of mountain views? Through this, Fort Collins has become a hotspot for outdoor adventure, being voted as the sixth safest city for cyclists while every adventure one can seek is just a short distance away. It is no surprise that so many people have decided to call Fort Collins their home.

Few cities in the world have the concentration of breweries and firepower in beer that Fort Collins has. With national breweries such as Odell and New Belgium, Fort Collins has become an increasingly desirable destination for avid brewery goers across the country. Venturing into Old Town, one is greeted with an array of restaurants, bars, and quant stores. It is truly one of the best places to hang out with your friends, family, loved ones, and those that you are just waiting to meet in a city that knows no bounds when it comes to having fun.

In 1870, Fort Collins welcomed the opening of the land-grant institution: Colorado State University. The rest is history.

CSU has become renowned as being one of the absolute best campuses to visit in the country and continually receives praise for being one of the nation’s top leading research institutions, leading as a golden example of sustainability and environmental impact. Students, staff, and alumni have become indebted to the great institution that is Colorado State University with ties that will last a lifetime. Whether you are attending a football game at Canvas Stadium or grabbing a coffee in the Lory Student Center, the beauty of CSU is infectious.

Fort Collins and CSU are forever intertwined as one of the premier duos of not only Colorado, but of the United States. CSU has long been invested in giving back to the community, with programs such as Cans Around The Oval and RAMS Against Hunger that work to diminish food insecurity in Larimer County and the city of Fort Collins.

AlleyCat Coffee House opened up its doors back in 2003 and has turned into one of the most eclectic cafes in Colorado. They strive to act as a home away from home for everyone during their visit to AlleyCat Coffee House. Their famous house Chai to go along with their wonderful delicious freshly made sandwiches, burritos, and to-diefor-pastries makes this coffee house the perfect fit for an early morning caffeine fix or for a late-night study session.

Green Tea Infused Coffee

If you’re a tea drinker and a coffee drinker, this coffee combination is for you. Add some green tea to your coffee and not only add the health benefits of green tea to your morning routine, but also increase the amount of caffeine in each cup.

Lavender and Chamomile Coffee

Silver Grill Cafe

For the eighth year in a row, the Silver Grill Cafe has been voted the best breakfast in Fort Collins. As the oldest restaurant in Northern Colorado, the Silver Grill Café provides customers with historical breakfasts and lunches. Their doors opened in 1933 and have to provide the community of Fort Collins with glorious food, from homestyle omelets to their famous giant cinnamon rolls. They often have a line out the door, so make sure to get there early and ready for the best breakfast in FOCO.

Big Al’s Burgers and Dogs House

Big Al’s and Dogs has been voted for the best burger in Fort Collins for two straight years. Located in Old Town, Big Al’s provides the community of Fort Collins with great hamburgers, hot dogs, milkshakes, and fries that are to die for. If you want something a little fancier you can get their truffle fries, but if you want something more mouthwatering we suggest the Roasted Jalapeno Cream Cheese Burger! If you choose to visit Big Al’s, remember that they like to “keep it in Colorado,” meaning all their décor is recycled and repurposed. Located right off the Colorado State University campus, this place is the college student’s dream come true. A sandwich covered in ranch and toasted on garlic bread; how can it get better than that? Cheba Hut offers over 30 different signature sandwiches all named after different weed strains. Get it instore, curbside, or by delivery, either way, you get it, you know it will be good for a late-night study session.

Some may say it’s cream cheese. Whatever it is, even incoming students have heard that Krazy Karl’s is the place to go for pizza in Fort Collins. You can call and order a pizza as early as 10:30 a.m., and don’t forget every Thursday if you call between 5-8 you get a large one-topping pizza for the price of the time you called. All college students dream: a $5 large pizza.

Honey Mustard

A due as old as time, Honey Mustard and chicken go together with an innate chemistry. Whether you’ve having chicken nuggets or a sandwich, it’s hard to go wrong with a little honey mustard.

Ranch

The classic, you knew it had to be in here. Ranch is the safest option when looking to pair chicken with a sauce, you always know that it’s going to be good.

BBQ

While this is third on the list, the separation between BBQ and ranch is razor thin. BBQ is always a safe bet and goes well with almost any kind of chicken.

Ketchup

While I am very much against this sauce for chicken, I could not ignore the trends. Ketchup has been and always will be one of the best choices when it comes to sauce.

Hot Sauce

Some people prefer to watch the world burn, or their tongue. For those who are not interested in the pleasantry of a nice dunk in some sauce, dipping chicken in straight up hot sauce is for you.

This convenient location and great pricing make Jim’s Wings the best wings in Fort Collins for the 24th year in a row. Whether you’re in need of a quick snack or you need to feed the football team, Jim’s Wings have orders ranging from 5 to 250 wings. Choose from their hot scale to get just the right amount of spice for you, and if you’re a sauce person you can purchase bottles of their sauce on deck.

Since opening these two brothers continue to bring the heat to the evergrowing list of Fort Collins chicken restaurants. If you’re wanting something more than chicken, check out their sandwiches, soups, and salads. Located right off Prospect and College, this place is a fried chicken lover’s dream, if you can handle a little heat.

With hand-made pasta and juicy steaks, RARE Italian has been voted the best Italian restaurant in Fort Collins. They use locally sourced meats to make their steaks, burgers, and meatballs fresh and delicious. But the freshness doesn’t stop there, they grow their own herbs, as well as make their own pasta and cheese. The owners did their research, and it sure did pay off. They traveled around central Italy, where they were able to experience farm-totable dining. If you’re looking for something fresh, be sure to check this out. When your parents come to town we know you want to take them to the best of the best in Fort Collins. Especially if they’re treating. Ginger and Baker is the place to go. Located in a historic 118-year-old grain mill built in 1905, Ginger and Baker is home to two restaurants, a coffee shop, a bakery, a market, and a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen. A rooftop patio looks out over Fort Collins’ River District offering views you’ll want to share with your family. Even if you aren’t eating, Ginger and Baker is worth a stop just to browse the pies and sweets in the bakery or stroll the market for a unique gift.

Their motto is “as fresh as it gets,” and that’s exactly what you get at Café Mexicali. Established in 2005, Café Mexicali has burritos that are made from scratch using the freshest ingredients. Try out their breakfast burritos served from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. or get yourself a smothered burrito where you can choose from their 8 sauces. If you want something a little spicier, ask them about the HeatWave sauce, but maybe have some milk on hand for the repercussions.

Just a small walk from campus, Fuzzy’s Tacos has a menu absorbed by everything from ground beef tacos to Mahi fish tacos and even some veggie tacos. Don’t want to wait until lunch or dinner to get some of the grub, visit Fuzzy’s a little earlier and devour their breakfast tacos. Potatoes, eggs, and cheese all wrapped in a tortilla, yes, please. There’s a reason Fuzzy’s has won best taco in Fort Collins, it’s because no one can compete with their mouth-watering Baja tacos, plus the margarita doesn’t hurt.

Blue Agave Grill

Since being established in 2014, Blue Agave Grill has won best Mexican in Fort Collins for 3 straight years. This is no surprise since Blue Agave Grill provides Fort Collins with made-from-scratch food as well as house-made sangria, infused tequila, and margaritas. Colorado-owned and locally sourced, this is the best place to go to get some savory food while also supporting Colorado’s small businesses. You can enjoy their great food for brunch, lunch or dinner. Don’t forget to swing by on Tuesdays for their all-day happy hour.

There is no other place in town to get authentic Thai food. Café de Bangkok has provided Fort Collins with flavorful dishes ranging from noodles, rice, and curry. If you want something sweet, spicy, salty or sour, we are sure you’ll find something worth devouring on this menu. Visit them to dine in or pick up some take-out. The restaurant’s ambiance makes it a great place for date night or just going out with friends, everyone can find a place at Café de Bangkok, no matter the occasion.

The way people eat has been constantly changing as we adapt to the world around us. Being healthy isn’t just about what we put in our bodies but also about our mental health. Feeling good about what you are eating can impact mental health in positive ways. So here are the top food trends in 2023.

1. Buy local produce when you can. This helps reduce the energy and omissions required to deliver food from farms. Also buying locally helps support the economy of Fort Collins.

2. Reduce food waste, and make a strong effort to make and eat all groceries you buy. Food waste has been a growing problem for years, particularly the disposal of excess food.

3. Support sustainable and local restaurants, giving back to Fort Collins allows this wonderful community to give back to you. Since most local restaurants in Fort Collins grow their produce, you can support the community while helping our climate.

4. Increase the amount of plant-based foods in your diet. This is not only a healthy option but also a climate-friendly one. Eating less meat and consuming more plants also helps reduce carbon footprint.

Don’t let the vegetarian label scare you off, this place is a favorite among both meat eaters and plant eaters alike. Avogadro’s has it all from delicious food, great drinks, and live performances for all to see. This Fort Collins favorite opened its doors in 1971 right off Mason Street in Old Town and has continued to serve the community greatly. You can order takeout or delivery from DoorDash, GrubHub, or NoCo Nosh and enjoy your delicious sandwich in your own home or visit them for a night of good food and some entertainment.

VEGETARIAN TEMPEH

Ingredients

1-8oz package tempeh

2 cloves garlic, minced

TACOS

1/2 green bell pepper, diced

1/2 red onion, diced

1 fresh jalapeno, minced

1 teaspoon minced chipotle pepper

in adobo

1 c. Mexican spiced diced tomatoes

2 teaspoons chili powder

3 teaspoons cumin

2 teaspoons garlic powder

hard shell tacos with tempeh

1 teaspoon onion powder

2 teaspoons dried oregano

2 teaspoons lime juice

1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

Nonstick cooking spray

6-8 hard taco shells

Directions

1. Crumble tempeh into a large mixing bowl. Mix in garlic, green pepper, onion, jalapeno, chipotle pepper, diced tomatoes, all spices, lime juice, and soy sauce. Combine with a large mixing spoon.

2. Spray a large skillet with nonstick cooking spray. Turn your burner on to medium. Once the pan is hot, toss in the tempeh mixture. Cook the tempeh mixture for about 10 minutes, or until he vegetables are tender and the tempeh has crispy brown edges.

3. While the tempeh is cooking, heat taco shells according to package directions. Once shells are warm, fill with about 1/4 cup taco mixture. Top with any and all toppings you desire!

Located right in the center of Old Town Fort Collins, Walrus Ice Cream has made a name for itself since its opening in 1987. But if you’re not a big ice cream fan, don’t worry, they still have sherbet, sorbet, and low-fat yogurt, they really have something for everyone. So go grab a cone or two after indulging in all that Old Town has to offer. But make sure while you’re there to say hello to Charlie the Walrus!

Newly introduced to Best of CSU this year, welcome to the College of Liberal Arts or as the voters like to call it, the best college. The College of Liberal Arts has become a staple of education at Colorado State University. With 21 different, distinct majors, it is easy to see why this college was voted as the absolute best. BEST PLACES TO HANGOUT AT ON CAMPUS

Colorado State University has long prided itself on being one of the most beautiful places to not only attend, but also to visit. The distinct energy that surrounds those walking around is accompanied by some of the absolute best spots to hangout, study, or even take a nap. With a plethora of places to go hangout, it can be often difficult to narrow down the ideal location. Lucky for you, we have it covered.

Coming out of the gates and claiming the number one spot on the list is the Lory Student Center. This should come as no surprise. The LSC has become home to many CSU students and faculty members, with everything from great study spots to restaurants. It is the ideal location to hangout considering the Ramskeller is in the basement. I mean, who does not want a beer with a little studying? The LSC is a jack of all trades if you will, with a bit of something for everyone. Plus, who doesn’t love those views looking west and at the gorgeous mountains.

In a very close race for second place is, of course, The Oval. When one chooses to attend CSU or is given the opportunity to work on campus, it is a mandate to hang out at The Oval. With rows of cascading trees circled by historic buildings full of character, The Oval stands out as one of the best spots to not only hangout, but also to take a nap. When you don’t have class, of course.

Library. While some may argue that this location is too low on the list, the Morgan Library can be considered the best spot but is not always ideal for hanging out. You might get some looks for being too loud, dissimilar from many spots in the LSC. The Morgan Library sets itself apart from the competition with Morgan’s Grind, or as we at Best of CSU like to call it, the best coffee on campus. Everyone needs a pick me up during the grind of a new semester and there is not a much better spot on CSU’s campus to hang out and let off some steam than Morgan’s Grind and the Morgan Library.

Hot on the trails of the Morgan Library is the Behavioral Sciences Building, arguably the most beautiful building on campus. With coffee and great couches to sit back and relax on, what is there not to like? The BSB has fantastic spots to study, catch up with old friends, or even take a break and watch some Netflix.

The BSB is always infected with the campus buzz, continually being one of the best spots to hang out and catch up on your studies.

Coming in at our last spot are the intramural courts right outside of the gym. When the sun is out in FOCO, which is almost every day, the courts are often flooded with competition and laughter. Being in the last spot on this list is no small feat either. The intramural courts have been home to the start of many new friendships, and perhaps the end of some as well.

Ah, The Oval. Just in fleeting thought you can almost feel the sunshine beaming through the dense leaves atop the circling trees, lined down the path and standing proud in unison. The shade from the towering trees dances on the unusually soft grass as birds sing happily amongst those passing and going. You lay down for only a moment to take in the beauty, the grass tickling your skin as you look up at the piercing blue sky, wind ruffles in your hair as you doze off into a light sleep. You wake up and are 30 minutes late to where you need to be. If you have experienced this same, blissful sleep, then you know why The Oval was voted as the best place to nap in town, whether accidental or on purpose.
