ART HOUSE GALLERY PRESENTS “DISINTEGRATION,”

New work by Andrea McKenna

Art House Productions (Executive Artistic Director Meredith Burns and Guest Curator

Lucy Rovetto) is proud to present new work by Art House’s own Gallery Director, Andrea McKenna, in the Art House Gallery, September 8th through October 1st, 2023. In this exhibit, which will also be a part of JC Fridays, McKenna will present new work created since January of this year. Her installation is about transcending identity, loss, and the realm of the beyond.

The opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 9th, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with a special preview and performance by dancer Miranda Dahl on Friday, September 8th (JC Fridays), at 7:00 pm. Guests will be asked to gather outside in front of the gallery windows. Regular gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Guest Curator Lucy Rovetto says Andrea McKenna is a designer of spaces and moods, and her new one-person show: Disintegration is no exception. McKenna subtly challenges the viewer to face the truth about living, that is, living with loss. For this “Installation,” McKenna adds the effects of fire to her layers of burlap, plaster, cheesecloth, stain, acrylic, and welding slag. In her unapologetic way, the artist artist invites us to go to our dark places as on a search through rubble after a tragedy. Hidden in the layers of burlap and mystery, we locate all that is precious and powerful in this artist’s work.

for their largest fund raising gala, Snow Ball. In 2018, she was asked to curate for Art House’s gallery and now serves as the Gallery Director. Andrea resides in Fort Lee, New Jersey, with her husband and two rescue cats.

ABOUT ANDREA MCKENNA

Andrea McKenna is an interdisciplinary artist focusing on painting and video making. After graduating from The School of Visual Arts she briefly pursued her degree in Illustration, then followed a path in set design, interning at Drew University’s Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey and Fordham College at Lincoln Center. After realizing this was not her dream, she went back to painting, and when she was accepted into a small gallery show in New Hope, Pennsylvania, she knew this was her path. McKenna then started exhibiting around Long Island, New Jersey,

and Pennsylvania.

The evolution of her work brought her to create large-scale installations, incorporating found objects and using nontraditional materials in her practice. Her work became a bigger idea when she discovered her love for film. Andrea’s painted figures are rooted in the spiritual realm, between death and the afterlife. Videomaking adds additional layers to these concepts. Work life led Andrea to become an interior Faux Finisher. After moving to Jersey City in 1999, she formed her own business: Videre Decorative Arts, which grew a client list spanning most of New Jersey. From March 2014 to September 2017, she co-founded and operated The Raven Gallery and Boutique with her best friend, Javiera Rodriguez, in downtown Jersey City. This gave the local community a place to show and sell their work and connect with their peers. Additionally, Andrea’s involvement as a volunteer for Jersey City’s performing and visual arts non-profit, Art House Productions, brought her back into the world of set design, where she worked on several productions and became the lead designer

Lucy Rovetto is a Visual Artist and Curator. She has a BFA from NJCU with a specialization in Printmaking. Rovetto began art handling as an intern at the Jersey City Museum and was later gallery assistant at the Point Elliott Art Center in Mukilteo, Washington. From 2008-2013 she worked as artist assistant to Anton Smit at Anton Smit Sculpture Park, Bronkhorstspruit, South Africa. From 2015-2019 she was Visual Arts Curator for Jersey City Theater Center. Since 2016 she has been an independent contractor, art handler, and preparator. In 2020 Rovetto served as juror for Apex Art. She recently curated “Blurred Time,” showcasing a group of ART150 artists at the Art150 Gallery.

Presents “Tracy Jones” A Play by Stephen Kaplan

Art House Production proudly presents the New Jersey premiere of Stephen Kaplan’s play Tracy Jones, directed by Alex Tobey.

The show runs October 19, 20, 21, 22, 26, 27, 28, and 29. November 2, 3, 4, and 5, 2023, at Art House, 345 Marin Boulevard (between Morgan and Bay Streets) in Jersey City. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm. Sundays at 3pm. Cast announcement coming soon.

For tickets and further information, please visit https://www.arthouseproductions.org/

Tracy Jones is a touching comedy of individual connection in an increasingly busy world. The main character, Tracy Jones, rents out the back “party room” of Jones Street Bar and Grill: The Place for Wings and Things to throw a party to which she’s invited every woman in the area who is also named Tracy Jones. Tracy sits for over an hour alone, nursing her Diet Coke, waiting for any other Tracy Joneses to show up, and help alleviate her epic loneliness. Through her encounters with the limited guests that attend, this hilarious play challenges the audience to question loneliness, connection, and why we do the things we do.

Tickets for Tracy Jones are now available on www.arthouseproductions.org.

The public is invited to the courtyard of the Barrow Mansion and enjoy a free concert by some of JC’s finest, jazziest, sultriest, funkiest, rocking-est musicians around! We’re kicking off the season with Mary Aiken and the @brightsidetavern band. Bring your kids and a friend or two and enjoy some great music on the porch!

CHERYL CROW Sea Hear Now Festival, Asbury Park

Let’s be clear—Sheryl Crow veers away from the off-stage spot-light whenever she can.

As someone who cheerfully admits to “...living with my head in the sand,” she’d be the last person you’d expect to be front and center in a film project. But here she is in

Sheryl,” the Amy Scottdirected documentary that recently bowed on Showtime. Featuring present-day interviews with Crow along with a number of famous friends including Keith Richards, Brandi Carlile, Emmylou Harris, Joe Walsh, Jason Isbell and Laura Dern, this project traces the Missouri

native’s path growing up as the piano-playing daughter of big band musicians up through the present day.

Rather than having it become a sunshine and lollipops kind of hagiography, Scott succeeds at creating a chronological narrative that includes a mix of performances along with insights into obstacles Crow ran into.

“When my manager [Stephen ‘Scooter’ Weintraub] and Van Toffler, who I knew back in the early days from MTV and VH-1, came to me and said they had some interest from Showtime to do a documentary, I was really not on board with it,”

Crow admitted in a recent phone interview. “I felt like I’m a very private person and I didn’t feel like a retrospective was in order when I’m still alive and have so many more songs to write. For a while there, I sat with the idea and decided that there was a world of story and living that is the story of a person and not necessarily a well-known artist. Everybody who has ever become a public figure has that story, so we dug in and my only prerequisite for it was that I didn’t want it to be a catalog of awards and a review of fantastic appearances. I wanted it to be the story of the person I am.” Having picked Scott after

seeing “Hal,” the latter’s 2018 documentary on late filmmaker Hal Ashby, Crow set to work going through storage, digging up photographs and sitting down and going down memory lane. Crow’s vulnerability is freely expressed, particularly when she recounts experiences like reliving her breast cancer battle along with admitting to suffering from bouts of depression. But it was all in keeping with the 60-year-old rocker’s goal of being honest in telling her story, particularly given how averse Crow is to the limelight.

“There were some great fun moments. But a lot of it was also very introspective and [involved] revisiting some hard stuff,” she said. “There was hours and hours of reflecting and it was exhausting and super-emotional. But in the end, I hate to use that stupid word cathartic, but it was.”
