Works to apply the final seal to several key roads in our network
Council and first responders to join forces for a second Family Community Safety Day BUILDING ON SUCCESS: Riverina Police District Inspector Jillian Gibson and Council’s Community Development Coordinator Alex Osgood this week announced Wagga Wagga’s second Family Community Safety Day for 2023 will be on Saturday 9 December. Wagga Wagga City Council, in collaboration with Police from the Wagga Wagga Local Area Command, are inviting locals to come along to the Riverside Park Precinct for our second Family Community Safety Day for 2023. The family friendly event is being held adjacent to the Riverside Playground area near Wagga Beach once again between 10am and 12pm on Saturday 9 December 2023. Council’s Community Development Coordinator Alex Osgood is encouraging community members from across the local government area to come along and connect with local first responders. “We will have representatives from the police, fire, and local emergency volunteer groups at Riverside, in addition to the Wagga Agile Library Service, and Santa will be appearing direct from the North Pole," Alex Osgood said. “The purpose of these events is to

work with local police to engage with community on a regular basis about any community safety concerns. “It is also an opportunity for community to engage with their local first responders in more positive settings instead of a crisis situation.” Professional Standards, Youth and Engagement Officer with the Riverina Police District, Inspector Jillian Gibson, believes the Family Community Safety Day is an important initiative. “Community safety is about recognising the need for all sections of the community to work together to create a safer environment for people to work, live and travel especially during the upcoming festive season,” Inspector Gibson said. “This means building partnerships between police, government agencies, local council, community organisations and individuals to promote and strengthen community safety for all.” The Family Community Safety Day
aligns with Council’s Community Safety Action Plan 2022 – 2026 (CSAP), which outlines the strategies and actions to increase safety, reduce crime where possible, and work toward building a safe and vibrant city for the future. SUCCESSFUL START: Around 250-plus people dropped in at Wagga Wagga's inaugural Family Community Safety Day held on 29 April 2023.
Wagga Wagga City Council is advising motorists to be aware contractors are in the process of applying the final bitumen seal on a number of road work projects The crews will carry out sealing works on Coolamon Road at the Houlaghans Creek Bridge on Saturday 18 November, and then on the section of Bourke Street between Fernleigh Road and Urana Street the following Saturday, 25 November, weather permitting. Director Infrastructure Services Warren Faulkner said this work is the penultimate stage of completing the 2022-2023 program of pavement renewal and improvement projects undertaken on several key connector roads within the Council area over the last 11 months. “We’re now moving full steam ahead on completing those works by spraying the final bitumen seal on the roads which we stabilised and rehabilitated in May and June this year,” Mr Faulkner said. “We did not apply the final seal back in June as the weather conditions were too cool and damp to allow for the bitumen to stick to the pavement effectively. “Instead, due to the timing of the construction completion in the cooler months of the year, an initial primer seal was applied during the works as a temporary wearing course and seal to protect the rehabilitated pavement until the weather conditions were more suitable for applying the final seal.” The last stage of this work is to remark the lines on the road. This will not occur for at least a month after the final seal works are completed to allow the impurities in the bitumen to settle. Earlier this week, the final seal was applied to a 1.6-kilometre stretch of Lake Albert Road between the Kooringal Road roundabout and Eastlake Drive. Mr Faulkner said there had been some instances of the initial primer seal stripping off the pavement on Lake Albert Road and Bourke Street, particularly at higher-stress locations such as intersections where vehicles brake and turn. “These issues are being addressed as part of the final seal application process, currently underway,” Mr Faulkner said. Oasis staff ‘dive in’ to an intensive water rescue and resuscitation simulation

Lifeguards and swim teachers at the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre this week underwent intensive education and training on water rescue and resuscitation, using their emergency response skills to control the situation. The training activity was part of a joint initiative between Oasis, NSW Ambulance, and Royal Life Saving NSW. It was the first time the simulationbased emergency training session by the experts from NSW Ambulance had been conducted at the Oasis. More than 20 lifeguards and learnto-swim staff participated in the water rescue scenario / simulation, which replicated a real-life emergency where the lifeguards carried out a water rescue of a 60-year-old male swimming laps in the 50-metre pool. Manager Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre Marc Geppert said the staff were keen to ‘dive in’ to the training. “It was great to see them get so much out of the session, which will better prepare them for an emergency situation,” Mr Geppert said. “They have regular proficiency training whilst also completing their annual CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard certificates. “However, the opportunity to simulate real-time emergency situations with the guidance of NSW Ambulance paramedics, and, to receive on-thejob feedback through this type of experience, is invaluable and hard to replicate.” The initiative also benefitted the NSW Ambulance staff who participated in and observed the water rescue and resuscitation session for their own training purposes. With the success of this inaugural event, consideration is being given to making it a bi-annual event for all Oasis staff.

Laneways in the Mount Austin area have been given vibrant and creative treatments on the footpaths and bollards. Wagga Wagga City Council engaged artist Damien Mitchell to deliver a creative workshop program in partnership with students from Mount Austin High School. The students worked with Damien to explore themes of diversity, connection, respect and the environment, which contributed to the designs installed in the laneways. Council’s Cultural Officer Lauren Reynolds stated that the finished project will improve the aesthetics and street appeal of the laneways. “It also provides students from Mount Austin High School, who live and learn in this neighbourhood, the opportunity to participate in a new creative experience and develop skills in collaboration and delivering a community-based project,” Ms Reynolds said. Artist Damien Mitchell, who grew up in Wagga Wagga, has delivered murals and public artworks in cities such as Melbourne, Prague and New York. “Earlier this month I ran three halfday workshops with the students from Mount Austin High School to support them in creating their own designs for the project,” Mr Mitchell said. “The whole process has been a collaborative effort with the students to allow them to develop skills in creative and community-based works, as well as identifying pathways in which visual art and design can bring life to any space.” Mount Austin High School Visual Arts teacher Kath McGeechan is grateful for the opportunity for students to work on this project. “It has been such a rewarding experience for the students to get out and actively transform their neighbourhood,” Ms McGeechan said. “Mount Austin High School and its students have really appreciated this opportunity to work alongside Council and Damien to deliver this creative project for our community.” The Mount Austin laneways project is funded by Wagga Wagga City Council and is part of the Public Art Plan 20222026.
