Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of the Academy: Last May, I received many requests for a copy of my parade comments to the graduating Class of 2015. Subsequent to the parade, I could not recall the names of all those who asked. I have used similar words at Silver Taps in years past. Thus, what better place to repeat them to all graduates past and present?

I offer you the following wishes: • I hope that you learn early that you have never failed until you quit. In every battle, game, or life’s challenge, there comes a time when you sense you might lose or fail. The realization often comes in a form of panic; you must face reality, calmly rise up, and overcome.

• I hope you become frustrated and challenged enough to begin to push back the barriers of your perceived personal limitations.

• I hope you will make a blatant mistake or error in judgment and be big enough to say the words – “I was wrong; I am responsible.”

• I hope you will recognize the difference between opinions and convictions.

Opinions, we toss around in casual conversation; convictions we fight for.

“ No Alumnus Left Behind”

• I hope that soon you will work for a demanding leader who rewards men and women who do what is expected and then some.

• I hope for you a full measure of impatience for your own success.

• I hope you understand that everything in life that is worthwhile is hard. Achievements that come easy are rarely worth your time.

• I hope you feel the consequences of every breach in your integrity, because it is the consequences that ultimately define our character.

• I hope that you will associate with others who possess strong character and personal values. Bring no one into your confidence who does not possess both.

• I hope that, when in doubt relative to critical decisions, you will trust your instincts, decide, execute, move on and never look back.

• I wish for you the worst kind of criticism, because it is criticism that pushes us to stretch for greater achievements.

•M ost important, I hope you possess the strongest personal faith in your God and that his will shall be done in your lives, and • After all of the above, I wish you unqualified success as you pass through the RMA doors.

I always close with the words of my great friend and University of Tennessee coach, men like you are our nations’ future – “You Can,You Will,You Must Succeed.”

Last Living Medal of Honor Recipient from the Battle of Iwo Jima Addresses Corps of Cadets

Riverside Military Academy was honored to have Corporal Hershel Woodrow “Woody” Williams, USMC (Ret), as a speaker for the Norman P. Blake Family Distinguished Speaker Series on April 28, 2015. Corporal Williams is a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient for his actions "above and beyond the call of duty" in the Battle of Iwo Jima during WWII. He was presented the Medal of Honor

by President Harry Truman in 1945 and is the last living Medal of Honor recipient from the Battle of Iwo Jima.

In February 1945, the American military was determined to capture Iwo Jima. Located just 650 miles from Tokyo, it offered a perfect spot to launch bomber attacks on the Japanese homeland. The Japanese were equally determined to hold on to the island, and so dug an elaborate system of underground tunnels and manmade hillside caves, guarded by machine guns tucked in more than 1,000 reinforced concrete pillboxes.

His unyielding determination and extraordinary heroism in the face of ruthless enemy resistance were directly instrumental in neutralizing one of the most fanatically defended Japanese strong points encountered by his regiment and aided vitally in enabling his company to reach its objective.

Cpl Williams' aggressive fighting spirit and valiant devotion to duty throughout this fiercely contested action sustain and enhance the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

When the invading U.S. Marines charged ashore from their landing craft, their advance was stalled by withering fire from the Japanese. An officer asked for a volunteer to try taking out several pillboxes that, tucked away on slopes overlooking the beach, had his men pinned down in a deadly crossfire.

“I’ll see what I can do.” responded Cpl Williams, a farm boy from Harrison County, West Virginia.

Williams took out seven pillboxes that day – an incredible feat for a young man who had been rebuffed in his first attempt to join the Marine Corps. “Sorry, but you’re two inches too short,” the recruiter had told him. Later in the war, the height requirement was dropped, and he rushed to join up.

CONGRATULATION Class of 2015 Graduates Strive for Excellence

The RMA Valedictorian and Salutatorian persevered through demanding schedules and rigorous academics to rise to the top of their class. Their diligence and hard work has earned each of them the respect and admiration not only of their peers, but also the Academy’s faculty and staff. We congratulate all of our Class of 2015 graduates and wish them great success in their future endeavors.

Valedictorian

Due to a relentless work ethic and superior academic achievement, C/CPT Tucker H. Pearson graduated as the 2015 Valedictorian.

C/CPT Pearson served as Delta Company Commander in the Corps of Cadets his senior year and performed duties which included commanding and instructing the company at all formations; ensuring company preparedness; and executing orders, directives and policies from superiors.

He was captain of Riverside’s National Champion Raider Team as well as a captain of the swim team and member of the track team. He was inducted into the National Honor Society, Riverside’s O.R. Horton Society, and the RMA Honor Council. He was selected for the Greater Hall County Chamber of Commerce’s 2014-15 Youth Leadership Hall County class.

In July 2014, C/CPT Pearson attended the Minnesota Boys State program. He was peer-elected to serve as Governor of the 2014 Minnesota Boys State and named 1st Senator and Primary Delegate to Boys Nation held in Washington, DC. He was then selected as the Boys Nation Commandant of the Marine Corps and placed on the President’s Cabinet. While attending Boys Nation, he met President Barack Obama.

C/CPT Pearson was the recipient of Riverside’s Douglas MacArthur Award. He also received a highly competitive appointment to the United States Military Academy – West Point. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Pearson of South Haven, MN. C/CPT Pearson’s younger brother, Ivan, is a rising junior at RMA.

S CLASS OF 2015!

Salutatorian

C/MAJ Alexei S. Joya graduated as the 2015 Salutatorian through his exceptional academic accomplishments. He attended RMA from 2010-2015 and served on the Battalion Staff as Honor Council Chairman his senior year.

He was captain of both the RMA Track and Cross Country Teams and a member of the wrestling team. He was a member of the National Honor Society, the O.R. Horton Society, the Science National Honor Society, and the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS). He was selected for the Greater Hall County Chamber of Commerce’s 2014-15 Youth Leadership Hall County class.

C/MAJ Joya served as the Drum Major for the RMA Military Marching Band, and he played the clarinet in the RMA Band. He was the recipient of Riverside’s John Philip Sousa Award in recognition of his outstanding achievement and interest in instrumental music, superior musicianship, and self-discipline.

He received the JROTC Superior Cadet Award and the JROTC “Iron Mike” Trophy, and he also received the Errol Bisso Coach’s Award for his outstanding sportsmanship and leadership on and off the field.

C/MAJ Joya was awarded the Georgia Military Scholarship and plans to attend the University of North Georgia. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Joya of Gainesville, GA.

Mr. Norman P. Blake, Jr., ’60, Delivers 2015 Commencement Speech

A 1960 graduate of Riverside Military Academy, Mr. Norman P. Blake, Jr., is responsible for the successful redemption of a variety of major corporations on the brink of disaster. He is recognized as one of the most accomplished “turnaround” experts in corporate America.

Mr. Blake earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Purdue University, and was later awarded an honorary doctorate in economics. His career at General Electric (GE) began with the completion of a one-year accelerated managerial development program. He was then hired by GE Technology where he advanced rapidly through divisions including computer time-sharing, marketing and public affairs, silicone, plastics, and financing businesses.

He left GE after 10 years to become president of a smalldiversified conglomerate serving the credit union industry and then returned to GE several years later. Subsequently, Mr. Blake worked directly for Jack Welch, who ultimately became CEO of GE and known as one of the best business leaders of his time.

Mr. Blake’s moniker as a “turnaround artist” originated when he was lured away from GE to be Chairman, President, and CEO of Walter E. Heller & Company. Through his strategic changes and aggressive management, Heller became one of Fuji Bank’s most profitable businesses.

The next turnaround occurred while Mr. Blake was Chairman, President, and CEO of the United States Fidelity & Guaranty Company, which was headed for bankruptcy. Under his leadership, the strategic direction of the company shifted dramatically and his picture was published on the covers of the Wall Street Journal and BusinessWeek magazine.

Mr. Blake also served as the first-ever Chief Executive Officer and Secretary General of the U.S. Olympic Committee. He set a new course for the organization and managed our nation’s participation in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

The Norman P. Blake Family Distinguished Speaker Series at RMA includes bi-weekly distinguished speakers and discussion groups that center on the topics of integrity, leadership, ethical decision-making, and sound judgment. Through repeated exposure to these topics, the program’s objective is to develop young men of character and substance who are able to meet the challenges of college, career, and beyond.

Seniors Earn Military Scholarships To Prestigious Universities So, you think you want to be an officer in the military? To do this, you can attend one of the 5 United States Military Service Academies, go to a senior military college or university, or you can go to a university that offers an ROTC Program. These Military Service Academies and universities offer near limitless possibilities – from a world class education to exciting personal challenges, in exchange for a paid college education and a guaranteed post-college career. Each year the military commissions nearly 20,000 to lead and manage the armed forces. Entrusted with unique authority and responsibility, officership requires character and leadership.

This year, four superlative members of the senior class have received appointments and scholarships to pursue their dream of becoming an officer in the United States Military.

C/2LT Conboy Receives Merchant Marine Academy Appointment

The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is a federal service academy that educates and graduates licensed Merchant Marine officers of exemplary character who serve America’s marine transportation. With 95% of the world’s products transported over water, these leaders are vital to the effective operation of our merchant fleet for both commercial and military transport during war and peace.

Known for its rigorous academic program, USMMA requires more credit hours for a baccalaureate degree than any other federal service academy. This challenging coursework is augmented by the Academy’s sea year experience, which affords midshipmen the opportunity to acquire hands-on, real-world experience aboard working commercial vessels sailing to ports around the world.

C/CPT Tucker Pearson Earns Appointment to West Point

2015-2016 Georgia Military Scholarship Awardees

Each year, the State of Georgia awards 42 outstanding high school seniors the Georgia Military Scholarship. These are merit-based scholarships for which recipients compete based on their academic preparation for college, leadership, participation in extracurricular activities, and desire to serve in the Georgia Army National Guard.

Recipients agree to attend the University of North Georgia (The Military College of Georgia), participate in the prestigious Corps of Cadets, enlist in the Georgia Army National Guard, graduate with their bachelors’ degrees, and commission as lieutenants in the Georgia Army National Guard.

The Georgia Military Scholarship is a full four-year scholarship that pays for tuition, fees, uniforms, room, board, and books.

Founded in 1802, the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point is the oldest of the five service academies. Being accepted for admission to the USMA is an exceptional honor reserved for our nation’s most promising students.

Over 16,000 students apply each year with only a little over 1,000 receiving appointments.

On June 29 Tucker Pearson,’15, reported for Reception Day (R-Day) at West Point to begin his 47-month journey toward becoming a commissioned leader of character. He joins fellow RMA alumni and Brothers in Blue who have traveled the “Long Gray Line” before him. These alumni include: Mac Sims,’13; John Nettles,’13; Jacob Deem,’14; and John-Mark MacFarlane, ’14.

C/CPT Pearson graduated as Valedictorian with an overall GPA of 4.02 and was also the recipient of Riverside’s Douglas MacArthur Award.

A Message to Parents from the Dean of Academic Affairs: Recently a good friend sent me an article which showed a young artist’s attempts to illustrate words that cannot be directly translated into English. Many of these words captured a situation or feeling I have experienced at some point or another. Some of my favorites included the Italian word abbiocco, which describes the tiredness you experience after eating a big meal and the German word verschlimmbessern, a verb that means to make something worse in the process of trying to fix it (like the time I tried to fix a bad haircut myself). My favorite word in the article was the Japanese word tsundoku, which translates to books that are purchased but never get read and just end up on a bookshelf. Upon reading this I looked to my own bookshelf and thought of all the knowledge that lay there waiting to be accessed. I could not believe that I had so many books that I had never read. At that moment I made the promise to myself that I would not buy another book until I have read all the books on my bookshelf. Initially I showed poor self-discipline by circumnavigating this self-imposed rule by checking a book out of the Lucile Beaver Library and then asking my wife to buy me a book that I really wanted. They were excellent books, and it was worth bending the rules for them. That being said, I have since dedicated myself to getting through all those unread books that stand on my bookshelf.

At Riverside our cadets have access to more knowledge and experience than the majority of their peers. They live and learn in an environment that embraces the important lessons of the past, yet looks to the future. The faculty that serves the Corps of Cadets are themselves, first and foremost, dedicated to learning. Cadets are fortunate to be surrounded by men and women of significant experience in academia, service of their country, and athletics. As we enter the new school year I encourage the cadets to embrace new knowledge and understandings. I caution cadets not to leave knowledge on the proverbial bookshelf. Completing your readings and consulting with your teachers and your peers will make you a better student and set you up for measurable success. I encourage cadets to use the library more. We have a beautiful reading room, an expansive collection, and a knowledgeable and friendly librarian. I encourage cadets to speak to their counselors and their teachers more. For our seniors this is especially important as you start to make life-altering decisions on college and career. I also encourage parents to seek out important conversations with teachers, counselors, and the Dean’s office.

I am excited for the 2015-16 school year. We have an excellent Corps of Cadets that will return to us ready to learn and lead. We have an equally impressive faculty returning who are re-energized and inspired by the quality of our cadets. We are reintroducing our Latin program, expanding our Visual Arts program, and starting the process of streamlining our STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) graduation pathway.

I want to close by wishing the seniors a successful year. Last year’s graduating class laid down a tremendous challenge with $5.1 million in college scholarship offers. I have every reason to believe that the class of 2016 has the potential to be our must successful class yet.

立宪民主党人在的中国汉语水平考试 (Cadets Excel in Chinese Proficiency Test)

The Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) is China's national standardized test designed and developed by the HSK Center of Beijing Language and Culture University to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers (including foreigners, overseas Chinese and students from Chinese national minorities).

HSK is divided into three categories: beginning level (HSK Basic), elementary to intermediate level (HSK Elementary-Intermediate), and advanced level (HSK Advanced).

Cadets in the Riverside Chinese program have received their scores for the annual HSK Chinese proficiency test taken at Emory University in March. With an average score of 93%, all of the students in Riverside's first year class passed the HSK 1 proficiency exam. All of the students in the second year passed the HSK 2 proficiency exam, and one student in his second year of the Riverside program, C/SSG Alexander Vieillard, also earned an HSK 3 certification.

There are six levels of the Chinese government-sponsored HSK test, with HSK 3 measuring the half point towards native fluency – a remarkable achievement for a high school student with only a year and a half of study in Mandarin at Riverside.

Two heritage speakers in the program who grew up around the language, C/CPL Andy Yap and C/CPL Eddie Song, also passed the HSK 3 and HSK 4, respectively.

We look forward to seeing these students continue to progress and welcoming new students into the Chinese Studies program in the fall.

Congratulations to rising junior, C/PFC Aidan Robinson, a first year student in Riverside’s Chinese language program, who was accepted into the 2015 China Bridge Summer Camp in Beijing, China. He traveled to Beijing where he spent two weeks learning about the language and culture of China, including a homestay with a Chinese family. The program is organized by the Confucius Institute at Emory University.

RMA Instructors Complete Their GECAT Advanced Education

Riverside welcomes cadets from all over the world, and many of these cadets arrive without a full mastery of the English language. RMA teachers Colonel Robert Cagle (science), Mr. Andy Jobson (English), Mr. Jared Koldoff (social studies), Mr. Elijah Merrett (English), and Ms. Lara Moore (foreign language/ESL) have completed the coursework begun in the spring of 2014 for a University of Georgia-sponsored certificate in ESL proficiency.

They received a state grant to participate in the Georgia ESOL for Content Area Teachers Project (GECAT), which is designed to encourage and improve the teaching of students whose first language is not English. Coursework focuses on classroom techniques in addition to understanding and incorporating the backgrounds and resources brought to our classrooms by students raised in other cultures. Congratulations for completing the GECAT certification!

Hunter Named Hall County Master Teacher Congratulations to RMA Science Teacher Robert Hunter who was honored as a Master Teacher at the 7th annual “Masters in Teaching, Life Changers at Work” ceremony held at Featherbone Communiversity in Gainesville, GA on April 13.

Mr. Hunter has been teaching for over 22 years and has been employed at Riverside since 2011. Mr. Hunter is the Science Department Chair and teaches Biology. In addition he serves as Co-Advisor to the J.E.T.S. Team.

Class of 2015 graduate C/1LT Cuong Nguyen was honored as a Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) STAR student for Gainesville schools on March 4. He earned the highest SAT score of his graduating class at RMA, and he was awarded the PAGE Foundation’s Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition.

He was selected to compete with other STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) students for region honors during a gala held March 17 at the University of North Georgia.

From Long Khanh, Dong Nai,Vietnam, C/1LT Nguyen served as the Executive Officer of Delta Company, and he was a musician in the RMA Concert Band.

He received awards for outstanding performance in Advanced Placement Literature, Advanced Placement Calculus, and Economics. He was also presented with the RMA Exceptional Scholarship Medal.

C/1LT Nguyen chose English teacher Dr. Brenda Barger as his STAR Teacher.

Dr. Barger began teaching at RMA in 2014. She holds a J.D. from Florida State University and a B.A. in Education from the University of North Florida.

RMA Teachers Get Up Close and Personal with Marine Drill Instructors Each year, from October through May, Marine Corps recruiters invite high school educators, counselors, and coaches to visit the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, SC. There, they witness first-hand how high school graduates are transformed into United States Marines.

Athletic Director Marc Paglia and Math Instructors Lauren Conboy and Anca King, along with about 30 other educators, stepped off the bus and followed the Depot’s famous “Yellow Footprints.” There they were welcomed “up close and personal” by Marine Corps Drill Sergeants.

Over the course of the next four days, they witnessed the physical demands of the many types of obstacle courses, classroom instruction, and the discipline of close order drill, all geared to equally challenge recruits to strive toward excellence and earn the title: Marine.

The program also exposes educators to the many personal development, career, and educational opportunities available to today’s Marines so they are better equipped to advise students about career opportunities.

RMA Hosts 2015 Best Raider Competition After claiming the 2014 National Raider Championship in November, our Raider Team hosted the 2015 Best Raider State Competition March 28 for the first time on the RMA Commandant’s Field. Over 20 schools and 40 Raider teams battled frigid cold and winds to compete in this all day event which included cadet contenders maneuvering through the Larry Beauchamp Obstacle course for the first time.

The JROTC Best Raider competition is modeled on the Army’s Ranger Challenge. Teams are comprised of two competitors and each event is timed. The events consisted of the following: two mile cross-country run; one-mile ruck sack run carrying 30 lb. ruck sacks; obstacle course; physical team test; the cross country rescue carrying an 80 lb. litter, and the conditioning course.

RMA teams took 1st and 2nd place overall with brothers Tucker and Ivan Pearson in 1st and Wiley Burns & Carlos Carrillo in 2nd.

In addition, C/SSG Winston Jones partnered with his sister Molly, who recently graduated from the Preparatory School of Georgia Military College, and they won 1st place in the State Co-ed division.

U.S. Army Musical Ambassadors, The Volunteers, to Perform at RMA

The Volunteers is the United States Army’s premier touring rock band. This talented and entertaining group of six military musicians is a component of The United States Army Field Band from Washington, DC. Other components of the Army’s Field Band include the Concert Band, the Soldiers’ Chorus, and the Jazz Ambassadors. Known as the Musical Ambassadors of the Army, the internationally acclaimed Field Band travels thousands of miles each year presenting a variety of music to enthusiastic audiences across the United States and abroad. The Army Field Band’s components tour a combined total of more than 400 days each year, appearing before live audiences of over 2 million people and broadcast to more than 2 billion.

The Volunteers will perform in Riverside’s Cervantes Theatre on Monday, October 19 at 7 p.m. Since its inception in 1981, The Volunteers has been telling the Army story through rock, pop, country, jazz, and patriotic music.

Five Cadets Join 2015 Boys State Programs

By Julie A. Smith, Multimedia Manager Riverside Military Academy hosted the 2015 Department of Georgia Boys State program June 14-20.

The 2014 summer session was the organization’s inaugural year on the RMA campus, but 2015 marked the 75th session of Georgia Boys State.

Boys State is a comprehensive week-long leadership action course in state and local government for rising male seniors who qualify for this selective program.

Georgia Boys State participants are instructed on Georgia political history, the law and court system, and parliamentary procedure. Delegates learn the political process by organizing a mythical 51st state in which each level of government is managed by peer-elected representatives. The Georgia Boys State session also includes a visitation day with representatives from a variety of colleges and universities.

Air Rifle Team Participates in Civilian Marksmanship Program

The Riverside Rifle Team traveled to Anniston, AL in June to participate in the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP).

The CMP is a national organization dedicated to training and educating citizens in responsible uses of firearms and air guns through gun safety training, marksmanship training and 16

The corps is a musical performance group which consists of over 100 members. The performance and competitive season is during the summer months when they performed at approximately six drum and bugle corps competitions and several parades in the South and Northeast.

Their season will culminate at the championships held on Labor Day weekend.

Based on their accomplishments by the end of the clinic, C/SGT Ellis Bowler and C/ Nevan Segraves were awarded the Personal Best Award and C/SGT Chase Walters was awarded the Most Improved Shooter.

SSG Robert Klemm Receives the 2015 GA Mann Award of Academic Excellence in Graduate Studies

Congratulations to faculty member SSG Robert Klemm, USA (Ret), who was the recipient of the 2015 Georgia Mann Award of Academic Excellence in graduate studies.

SSG Klemm is completing his final two courses for his Master’s in World History at the University of North Georgia and currently carries a 4.0 GPA. He will defend his graduate thesis in August. The topic is the Trans-Atlantic Diffusion of Fascism in Latin America during the 1920s and ‘30s.

Col Cagle and C/PFC Seymour inducted into the Order of the Arrow

Colonel Robert Cagle, RMA science teacher and Assistant Scoutmaster to Troop 254, and Cadet Drew Seymour were both recently inducted into The Order of the Arrow, the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America.

For more than 95 years, The Order of the Arrow has recognized Scouts who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. Arrowmen are known for maintaining camping traditions and spirit, promoting yearround and long term resident camping, and providing cheerful service to others.

Col Cagle was Drew’s 7th grade science teacher, and it was a special weekend for both as they were inducted together.

Cadets Selected for Earthcare: The Leadership Challenge

The program is a week-long environment-focused leadership development program that includes interactive workshops, tours, and round-table sessions with Georgia Power business leaders, team-building exercises, and other professional development experiences.

Library Forum Dedicates Little Free Library

Library Forum members from The Lucile Beaver Library at Riverside Military Academy dedicated a Little Free Library and books to the Paul E. Bolding American Legion Post 7 in May. Post 7 Adjutant Ray Schubert received the items donated by the RMA Library Forum.

The Little Free Library, Ltd. is a non-profit organization established in 2009 to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges in neighborhoods and cities around the world. Originally designed to look like a one-room school or a “house of books,” the Libraries rapidly took on a wide variety of sizes, shapes, themes, and other attributes.

The following RMA Library Forum Cadets created the Little Free Library stationed at the American Legion Post 7 and donated it with assistance from Librarian Janie Halliley: senior 2LT Marc Ioug, junior SFC An Nguyen, senior SGT Wade Strickland, and junior PFC Mason Williams.

Letter From the Commandant Having begun my duties as the Commandant of Cadets on April 1st, a busy time of year for any school, my first few months have been full of firsts. I have seen my first Parents’ Day, Founders’ Day, Band Concert, Chorus Concert, Military Ball, Silver Taps Ceremony, and Commencement—all quality events indicative of a fine institution.

I would like to begin my first contribution to Reveille by saying thank you for the warm welcome I have received into your RMA family. I am, perhaps, the luckiest retiring officer in all of the Department of Defense. The Army family, and especially my Special Forces family, have been some of the best folks I’ve ever worked with, but even that experience fails to compare to the welcome I have received from the Riverside family.

From all of the parents, faculty, staff, board members, and alumni I’ve had the pleasure of meeting thus far, it has been the warmest and most encouraging welcome I have ever received at any post or command. I know that last fall was a challenging time of transition, and I want to thank everyone for maintaining their resolve while staying the course which has provided me a solid surface to transition into the RMA family.

To those I have not yet had the pleasure to meet, please allow me to introduce myself.

I grew up in Dalton, Georgia where I graduated high school and was captain of the Dalton High School Soccer Team. I spent four years in the Georgia National Guard while I attended the University of North Georgia where I graduated and commissioned into the Infantry. I’ve spent the last 16 years in the U.S. Army Special Forces and will officially complete my 25 year military career this year. For the last 10 years I have coached youth sports teams and discovered that I have a passion for coaching and working with youth.

Being brought into the Riverside family and given the opportunity to pursue my dual passions for the military and for fostering young adults is an absolute blessing, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity.

NASCAR Folds of Honor Ceremonies Feature RMA Cadets

Riverside Military Academy Drill Team (Fusiliers) and Color Guard cadets were selected for the honor of folding and presenting the U.S. flag during the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup races at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in March 2015. Major Dan Rooney, founder and CEO of Folds of Honor, served as the grand marshal of the race.

Following the last on stage flag folding event, the cadets headed to the arena where they mingled with NASCAR drivers before the race. With television cameras rolling, the RMA Color Guard was positioned behind the National Anthem performer, and Drill Team members stood at attention nearby. After this opening ceremony event, everyone was rushed off the track so the race could commence!

Race-day events began with the playing of the National Anthem. Several young men and women were then sworn into the U.S. Air Force just before the Color Guard and flag folding detail took the stage. Riverside Cadets folded the flag 13 times in honor of the patriotism of the U.S. Military veterans.

Officials from the Folds of Honor organization, RaceTrac, and NASCAR were so impressed by the cadet leadership that participated in the 2015 race week activities, that they have already requested RMA Cadets for 2016 race activities. A QuickTrip representative also visited campus to present a $2500 check to the Academy.

Our cadets performed the flag folding ceremony on stage several times per day over the race weekend. These 18 cadets had opportunities to hear inspirational stories from family members of military heroes who sacrificed their lives fighting for the preservation of our freedom.

Individuals shared how Folds of Honor helped their families overcome hardships and fund their children’s education.

The Folds of Honor organization provides annual educational scholarships to the families of those who have been killed or disabled while in active military duty.

The scholarships help support private education tuition, tutoring, and educational summer camps for children K-12, as well as higher education tuition assistance for spouses and children. Since its founding in 2007, Folds of Honor has awarded over 7,500 scholarships. Learn more about Folds of Honor at www.foldsofhonor.org.

Band Conducts Musical Petting Zoo The Riverside Band was invited to perform at New Holland Elementary School as part of the school’s spring family events. The band put on a “Musical Petting Zoo” for all kindergarten and 1st grade classes. Our cadets performed some small ensemble pieces, and then the elementary students had the opportunity to visit different instrument stations to see, hear, and touch the instruments.

This Musical Petting Zoo was organized by C/1SG Patrick Sheffield and C/SSG Ian Cooley as their Band Leadership Action Service and Tradition (BLAST) Project. The purpose of a BLAST project is to promote band identity and individual ownership within the RMA Band program.

Projects are student inspired, student led, and support the idea of leaving the RMA Band program in a better place for the future. Completion of a BLAST project is required for all upper company leadership and all band musical leadership positions. Many thanks for the hard work of cadets Sheffield and Cooley to make this Musical Petting Zoo a success!

Former USAF Conductor Visits with Cadets In late Spring, Riverside Military Academy Band Cadets were very fortunate to meet Col Lowell Graham, USAF (Ret) who is a former commander and conductor of the United States Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. He spoke to our cadets about the importance of music; the value of discipline and hard work; told stories of his military band experience, and shared some words of encouragement for our young musicians.

Cadets Selected for Piedmont College Band Clinic During the month of March, RMA had 10 band cadets participate in the Piedmont College Band Clinic. These cadets were nominated and selected to perform in an Honor Band under the direction of renowned wind band composer Dr. David Holsinger, who is currently the Director of Bands at Lee University in Cleveland, TN. The Honor Band rehearsed together for two days, and then performed a concert at Piedmont College. Congratulations to these band cadets on a great performance!

Symphonic Winds Earns Superior Rating The RMA Symphonic Winds, the Intermediate Band and The Commanders, traveled to Jefferson High School late spring to perform for Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE), an event hosted by the Georgia Music Educators’ Association. For LGPE, ensembles prepare a program of three musical selections that are performed for GMEA judges for a rating. This rating is an evaluation and score of their musical performances and sight-reading abilities.

For the fourth consecutive year, Symphonic Winds earned an overall rating of “Superior”, the highest rating GMEA awards. For their first LGPE performance, the Intermediate Band earned an overall rating of “Excellent”, the second highest rating awarded

by GMEA. In addition to the overall performance rating of “Excellent”, they earned a “Superior” rating in Sight-reading.

Under the direction of Mr. Miles Adams, Riverside’s newly created Jazz Band, The Commanders, performed for the first time and received a straight Superior rating as well. This marks the first time Riverside has ever had three ensembles perform and participate in LGPE. We are very proud of the hard work these band cadets put in!

The Grenadiers Study Historic Civil War Drum On April 27th, Gainesville residents Mr. Ken Thrash and Mr. Preston Painter visited Riverside’s Grenadiers during their lunch rehearsal period. Mr. Painter’s great-great-great-great-grandfather was a Captain and drummer in the Civil War, and Mr. Painter still has his drum in possession. He brought this authentic Civil War rope drum, a pair of authentic Civil War drumsticks, and a collection of old letters and Confederate money for our cadets to look at. He told fascinating stories about his ancestor, and the visit concluded with The Grenadiers performing for our guests.

The Grenadiers are Riverside’s rudimental rope drum line and perform historically accurate drum cadences and calls from the Civil War and Revolutionary War on replica Civil War drums that were custom made for RMA over 20 years ago. This drum line represents RMA in many community events each year and we are grateful to Mr. Thrash and Mr. Painter for this opportunity!

Graduates Will Lovett and Ben Walker signed Letters of Intent to play baseball at the collegiate level. Lovett will be playing ball with the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Eagles and Walker will be playing with the Marion Military Institute Tigers. Cadet Walker was also named to the 8AA All Area 1st team and Cadet Lovett was named to the 8AA All Area 2nd team.

Riverside’s Track & Field team competed against six other teams in the Region 8AA Meet on April 22 & 24 and came in first. Our Eagles are the 2015 8AA Region Champions and went on to compete at the State level where they finished in 3rd place overall. In addition to clinching the Region Championship, they also won the Gainesville/Hall County Track and Field Championship for the first time!

Immediately following his graduation ceremony, Cadet Malik Faulk competed in the State 8AA 300 meter hurdles and finished 1st. His finish set a new school record with a time of 39.18.

Cadet Chris Howard also joined Cadet Faulk at the State Track and Field competition to compete in the Shot Put event where he placed 2nd with a distance of 50’ 03”.

In addition, Howard broke a new Academy record in the Triple Jump with a distance of 45’3.5” and was part of the 400 meter relay team that included of Cadets JeJuan McCalston, Dante Tate, and Alphonse Smith III. This relay team set a new Academy record by securing a time of 43.22 seconds.

Riverside’s Varsity Soccer team won the 8AA Region Championship in May and went on to the State 8AA State competition where they were defeated in the semi-finals.

Several new Academy swimming school records were shattered during the 2015 8AA State Swimming finals held at Georgia Tech.

Cadets Yap, Reale, Muir and Pearson set a new school record for 200-yard medley with a time of 1:40.72. Cadets Yap, McMorrow, Muir and Reale broke the 400-yard freestyle relay with a new Academy record of 3:24.37.

With a time of 1:40.39, Cadets Pearson, Reale, Muir, and Yap broke the Academy record for the 200-yard medley. Cadet Reale also broke 2 records during the individual competitions. He finished the 100-yard butterfly event with a time of 53:10 and a time of 59:49 in the 100-yard breaststroke. In addition, the team nailed the Hall County Championship earlier in the season!

A crowd favorite, Ryan Honey, ’96, returned this year to serve some of Georgia’s best BBQ and fixings. he weekend began with the Corps of Cadets parade, where T honored guest and President’s Distinguished Leadership Award recipient Mr. John D. Bassett III, ’55, addressed the Corps. Also at the parade, Michael Neveaux, ’65, was inducted into the Riverside Sports Hall of Fame. Colonel Benson’s program about Hollywood included photos and an eye witness account from Errol Bisso, ’61, who was present on that fateful January day in 1959 when the main building

Bassett Recognized with President’s Distinguished Leadership Award John D. Bassett III, ’55, was the recipient of the President’s Distinguished Leadership Award at the Founders’ Weekend parade on April 24. The award was in recognition of his achievements as an entrepreneur, corporate president, and CEO. He is the third generation of his family to manufacture furniture in Virginia. He has worked in the furniture industry for 53 years, first at Bassett Furniture Industries and since 1983 at Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Company. He has been president and CEO and presently serves as chairman of the board for Vaughan-Bassett.

Under Mr. Bassett’s leadership,Vaughan-Bassett is today the largest wooden bedroom furniture manufacturer in America with 700 employees and sales over $84 million per year. One hundred percent of their products are made in the USA. Mr. Bassett is currently the subject of a New York Times bestseller, Factory Man.The book is a family history that

includes Mr. Bassett’s nearly one-man stand against the flood of furniture imports from the Far East that closed factory after factory in America.

Mr. Bassett entered Riverside as a sophomore in 1952 and distinguished himself by lettering in golf, consistently making Honor Roll, and earning the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in Delta Company by his senior year. After graduation, he attended and graduated from Washington and Lee University.

He is a member of the American Furniture Hall of Fame, and last October, he was presented with the Washington and Lee University Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Col Benson has said of him, “John Bassett’s story is an inspiring one of overcoming obstacles. He is a testimony to what a leader can accomplish through tenacity, force of will, and hard work. We are fortunate to name John Bassett among our Distinguished Riverside Alumni.”

Below is one alumnus’ thoughts about Coach Nichols: “ I am a 1970 graduate of Riverside.While at Riverside I played basketball for two years under Coach Nichols. As I reflect back to those years, Coach Nichols was an outstanding and dedicated coach and teacher who had a genuine care and concern for his players and students. He always expected his players to give 110% on the court as well as in the classroom. Not only was he a great encourager to his players, but he truly loved and cared for the students he taught.

Coach Nichols was very much admired, respected, and loved by his players and students.

Richard M. Nichols Arena Dedication In recognition of Richard “Dick” Nichols’ 38 years of service and devotion to the Academy, the arena inside Curtis Hall was named in his honor. Mr. Nichols wore many hats during his time at RMA – extraordinary coach, athletic director, and teacher of cadets. He is still a great fan and friend of Riverside.Thank you to Abraham A. Mitchell, ’52, Charles A. James, ’64, and Ira J. Middleberg, ’66, whose donations also made possible the repainted floor and new LED lighting.

On April 25th during Founders’ Day Weekend, the dedication of the Richard M. Nichols arena was held. It was a beautiful ceremony for a coach, teacher, and an administrator who has been so instrumental in the lives of hundreds of cadets over the years. Riverside has been so fortunate and blessed to have Dick Nichols, and he has been such a vital part and leader in the success and development of Riverside over the years. Coach Nichols has been a wonderful friend, and I have come to know he is a man of great wisdom, integrity, and character. He has dedicated his life to Riverside, and I am SO PROUD to call him my friend and mentor.”

The RMA Sports Hall of Fame has grown to 25 members, and two more will be inducted during Homecoming October 16-17. Nominations are accepted year-round, and members are inducted twice each year – Founders’ Weekend and Homecoming.

Mike Neveaux, ’65, an outstanding swimmer, was inducted in April during Founders’ Weekend. He was a four-year letterman on the swim team and was captain and most valuable swimmer in the 1964-65 season. He broke all Riverside pool records in the back stroke and free-style events. In his senior year, he placed first in every meet he entered in back and free-style. Following his graduation from Riverside, he swam and ran track at Auburn University and the University of Florida, from which he graduated. Mike continued to swim competitively in the armed services and as a member of the Los Angeles Police Department where he swam for 15 years in the California Police Olympics and the World Police and Fire Games. He amassed more than 35 gold, silver, and bronze medals.

Two former football standouts will be inducted at Homecoming 2015: Jason Swindle, ’92, played wide receiver from 1989-91 and was the leading receiver in catches and yardage his junior and senior years. He was chosen for the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame (Northeast Chapter) his senior year and awarded the Golden Helmet Award for excellence in athletics as well in academics.He was named to the All Area Football Team 1991, was most valuable, and was chosen team captain. Jason also lettered in varsity golf 1989-91. He was cadet captain of Alpha Company and president of the Horton Society his senior year.

Richard Bisso, ’85, was a five year cadet from 1981-85 and earned 13 varsity letters during those years. He was a four-year starter at quarterback, was awarded most improved his sophomore year, and was co-MVP his junior and senior years.The 1985 team was the Hall County team of the year with a 7-2 record, and the team defeated North Hall 47 to 7 in Richard’s last high school game. He still holds the RMA record for interceptions in a season with 12. He was also a five-year starter on the wrestling team with a career record well over 100 wins. As a wrestler, he was awarded the most improved trophy and was the MVP his junior and senior years. Richard was also a three-year letterman in track and one year dove for the swim team.

QUAD TO BE NAMED FOR COLONEL NIMOCKS

The quadrangle in front of the Sandy Beaver Center will be named in memory of former military instructor Colonel David R. Nimocks at October’s Homecoming celebration.

where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. His Army service extended from 1916-1945, and he served in three wars and/or war zones – Mexican border,WWI, and WWII. In between assignments he managed to attend Davidson College.

The naming is made possible by a gift from his son, David R. Nimocks, Jr., class of 1945. In addition to naming the quad, the gift will create the COL David R. Nimocks, United States Army Endowed Scholarship.

COL Nimocks was the PMS&T (professor of military science and tactics) from 1935-39, during which time the Academy maintained Honor School distinction. Liked and respected by the cadets, the Bayonet yearbook was dedicated in his honor in 1939.

Because he served at the bidding of the U.S. Army, COL Nimocks’ tenure at Riverside was relatively short as he was dispatched to other duty stations.

He retired from the Army in October 1945, and that same year he returned to RMA at the request of then president Sandy Beaver to serve as associate commandant. He died one year later at the age of 48 from pneumonia.

COL Nimocks’ son recalls that Riverside was one of his father’s favorite posts. Because of his father’s job, David attended RMA for one year in the junior school and then resumed classes at RMA his senior year of high school when his dad returned from WWII and found his son living large.

As David said, “I planned to cut a wide swath through my senior year in public high school.” He is grateful today that his father sent him back to finish high school at RMA. “Riverside, in turn, is grateful to David Nimocks for his generosity, and we look forward to welcoming the Nimocks family to campus in October,” said Dr. Jim Benson, president.

CADET TRIPS TO CUBA DATE TO 1936

A rich, colorful history binds Riverside to Cuba. From annual trips to the island from the Hollywood, Florida campus to the recruitment of sons of prestigious Cuban families, the ties are strong.

In celebration of this history Felipe A.Valls, Sr., ’50, a native of Cuba who has made his home in Miami since 1960, will be honored as the 2015 Distinguished Alumnus (see story on following page).

Riverside’s first cadet trip to Cuba was in 1936 with a weekend jaunt for 72 cadets and chaperones. The trips, sometimes two per year, continued intermittently until 1956.

Presumably educational, the trips were probably also a recruiting tool. Handsome and polite cadets touring the island may have prompted wealthy Cubans to consider the American school, which conducted winter classes in Florida.

In 1936 the 72 lucky cadets, whose parents paid the stipend, cruised to Havana overnight on the P. & O. S.S. Florida on Friday and returned the same way on Sunday evening. The RMA catalog from that year states that the cadets enjoyed the trip “without any loss of time from school duties.” Cadets were selected for the trip based on satisfactory deportment and grades.

The visits included touring Morro Castle, the presidential palace and capitol, Havana’s shopping district, Oriental Park, Hotel Pasaje, Columbus Cathedral, Cabana Fortress, the national casino, and sugar mills. The schedule often included a reception hosted by the Cuban president, who in 1936 was José Agripino Barnet.

Two trips were made in 1937, but the 1938 trip was the grandest to date.

Building on the cordial relationship between Riverside and the Cuban government, in March 1938 Riverside and officials from the state of Georgia teamed up for a Georgia Good Will Trip. Governor E.D. Rivers headed the delegation, which included Steadman Vincent Sanford, chancellor of the University System of Georgia, 200 cadets, President Sandy Beaver, and Riverside faculty and staff.

The Palm Beach Post reported that the dignitaries sailed from Miami on the P. & O. S.S. Florida while the cadets traveled on gunboats, the Cuba and the Patria, courtesy of the Cuban government. The cadets paraded through the streets of Havana, and the presidential

ADVAN CE M E N T reception was hosted by then president Federico Laredo Brú.

Sandy Beaver was awarded the famed Order of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, one of Cuba’s highest honors, in 1939.

This award, together with the reception hosted by then-president Colonel Fulgencio Batista, was a highlight of the trip, according to the 1939-40 Riverside bulletin.

The trips continued into the 1950s with the last one occurring in 1956.

The trips, coupled with the recruitment efforts of Major P.M.Vidal, meant many Cuban boys enrolled at Riverside.Vidal, a popular faculty member, is described in the 1950 Bayonet as “Riverside’s genial representative in Cuba who combines Spanish-teaching and liaison duties with the Island Republic.”

John Mandt, ’56, a native of West Virginia, remembers his trip in either ’55 or ’56. There’s no doubt, he says, that Sandy Beaver saw it as an opportunity to recruit as well as expand the horizons of his young students.

“It was a chance to see a different place and it was my first trip to a foreign country. We had a lot of Cuban cadets and they would fill us in on what was going on, plus it gave them a chance to get back home. In later years, as we’ve talked, we’ve always wondered about some of our classmates and what happened to some of them.”

Distinguished Alumnus 2015:

FELIPE A. VALLS SR., ’50 Felipe A.Valls Sr., ’50, will be honored at Homecoming as the 2015 Distinguished Alumnus.

Like many young men from prosperous Cuban families,Valls came to Riverside Military Academy for a superior education in 1947, graduated in 1950, and returned to his home country.

Back in Cuba he built a number of successful businesses including Natty and Felipe Valls, ’50 gas stations, restaurants, a supper club, and was in the process of building an iron mining plant with the wellknown German company, Krupp’s, when things changed.

In 1960, he and his family fled Cuba and Castro’s communist regime and left behind his business success. Arriving penniless in the U.S., he eventually found a job with a company that sold restaurant equipment, something with which he had experience in Cuba. He soon saw an opportunity to import espresso machines from Europe, and he opened International Equipment Company, which sold restaurant equipment.

The equipment sold quickly, and Valls decided to open outdoor Cuban coffee stands. He first bought Badia’s Restaurant, and after that he opened Versailles Restaurant that would put him on the map. Little did Valls imagine that the 120-seat restaurant he first opened would one day grow to seat 450 and be regarded as one of Miami’s landmarks in the Cuban community. In 2011, Versailles Restaurant celebrated its 40th anniversary; it has become an icon in Little Havana where its patrons feel they are a bit closer to their homeland.

Aside from the Cuban community, locals, tourists, celebrities, and politicians alike all make their way to Versailles to see and be seen.

After opening Versailles, he created the well-known chain of Cuban restaurants named La Carreta. At present, the Valls family employs around 2,000 people and their businesses include Versailles, multiple locations of La Carreta, Casa Juancho, commercial real estate, and various restaurants at the Miami International Airport.

The Miami Herald compared him to Midas because every business in which he is involved is a success.Valls resides in Miami with his family and his son, Felipe Valls, Jr., works as his partner. His wife, Natty, and his daughters and grandchildren also contribute to his family's success and their legacy.

Since his 2006 graduation from Riverside Military Academy, Bachschmidt attended the University of Texas at Austin where he earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering in 2010.

Dinner Benefitting RMA Recognizes Local Heroes The second annual Sandy Beaver Entrepreneurial Leadership Awards was presented at a formal dinner on Thursday, August 13 in Alumni Hall. Gainesville leaders, RMA trustees, alumni, and friends attended and honored local businessman, philanthropist, and entrepreneur, James A. Walters of Gainesville and the late Wilbur F. Ramsey, a World War II decorated hero, poultry industry executive, and community leader.

The purpose of the annual awards is to grow a $1 million foundation to provide tuition assistance to help Riverside perpetuate its military-style education.

The program and the award are named for Sandy Beaver, Riverside’s president for over 50 years. His vision, passion, and determination to mold boys into men continue today and will continue for years to come. The award, named in his honor, will be given annually to recipients who emulate his legendary qualities.

Walter E. Smith Jr., ’58, and several donors are the founding members of the program, which will continue to grow with tax-deductible gifts to the RMA Foundation and proceeds from the dinner.

Immediately following graduation, he took a position as director of operations at D.A.B. Constructors, a firm in central Florida specializing in public sector infrastructure construction. Today he serves as the firm’s vice president and chief operating officer.

Bachschmidt was appointed in 2011 as a member of the board of directors of the Florida Transportation Builder’s Association, a construction industry organization, and is the youngest sitting board member in the organization’s more than 82-year history. He also serves on several key steering committees with the Florida Transportation Builder’s Association, the American Road and Transportation Builder’s Association, and as an industry liaison to the Florida Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration.

While enrolled at Riverside, Bachschmidt became a pilot.

He has since logged more than 2,000 hours of flight time and is a certified commercial pilot. He is the youngest pilot ever rated to fly a Ford Tri-Motor, an aircraft that is more than 89 years old, which he completed at the age of 18, one year after his RMA graduation.

Bachschmidt has gone on to pursue competition aerobatics and stunt flying.

In 2014, he won the U.S. Aerobatic Championships in the advanced category, becoming the youngest competitor idt, ’06 Lauren and Foster Bachschm to ever claim this achievement. He is also one of only two pilots in the history of U.S. competition aerobatics to win in the advanced category at the national level in their first year of competition. The other pilot sharing this honor is world famous aerobatic pilot Sean D. Tucker, Bachschmidt’s mentor.

ADVAN C E M E N T Years ago every Sunday afternoon cadets were required to write a letter home. Since my dad died when I was young, my letters were addressed to my mom. As I conclude my term as chairman of the Alumni Association, I decided to go back in time and write a letter to my mother, Dorothy Oakey McCallum.

Sunday, July 21, 2015 Dear Mom, Wow, let me tell you about last week. My brother Rat, John Herb, passed away. He graduated in 1940, went to college, and then off to fight in the war.

The Army found his body last summer, and his RMA ring was with him! It was a cool story and a lot of Brother Rats came to Arlington for the funeral.

Brother William Pietsch, ’38, and Brother Kevin Muir, ’15, spent a lot of time together. Coach and Mama Bisso were there, too. I care for him and Mama Bisso so much. Anyway, the service was beautiful and made us all cry.

I want to thank you for my Riverside education. I know I was a pain about it. I wanted to be home with you. But here I am, 40 years later, and your gift is still giving. I am still learning from those that taught me so long ago. I think you would be proud of all of us. Dynamite and Dish are still two of my closest friends. I’m still playing that trumpet you bought me for band. I always thought Major Hancock was weird, but I wish he was around today. He gave me a lifelong appreciation for music. We have had a lot of successful kids at Riverside – Abe Mitchell, Sy Zuckerman, John Bassett, Bill Glisson, Arthur Boisfontaine – all are the best at what they do.

Mom, I’m 58 now. I remember when you were 58. I hate to admit it, but I did think you were old then. Now I really know just how young you were.You had a tough time. It could not have been easy for a single mom to raise a strong-headed boy like me. Anyway, I wanted to thank you for Riverside. Today I look at it as a gift that continues to give. My Brothers are still the ones I count on most in life.

Homecoming in October will be my last as the alumni chairman. My Brothers have worked hard with me these past few years to build our Brotherhood. I owe each and every one a big thank you for helping make our RMA better.

So, as I attempt to avoid Senioritis, I am not opposed to a few senior pranks. Col. Benson has called me on the carpet a few times over the past few years. A little senior pay-back may be warranted. Don’t worry mom, I won’t get in trouble. Anyway, change is good, and it’s time. Ron Fenner, ’68, will do well as chairman, and he has many good ideas.

Mom, I don’t think I ever had the chance to say thank you. Thank you with all my heart.You are the best.

RMA RING Helps Solve 70 Year Mystery

Second Lieutenant John W. Herb, World War II fighter pilot and a 1940 graduate of Riverside Military Academy, was laid to his final rest June 18 after almost 70 years.

The recovery and repatriation of his remains involve a German man, who as a boy watched a P-51D, flying low, clip a tree and crash in April 1945. The second significant clue was a silver ring with a blue stone that glittered in the sandy soil. A man and a ring led to the positive identification last summer of the remains of the 22-year-old pilot.

Herb, of the 359th Fighter Group, 368th Fighter Squadron, was interred at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

Representatives from Riverside, a cadre of alumni, and members of the extended Herb family gathered for the ceremony and a reception that followed. A special guest was Manfred Römer from Germany, who as a boy watched the American P-51D crash in flames. His persistence in later years led to the discovery of the wreckage and Herb’s shallow grave.

John William Herb of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, seemed destined to achieve anything he wanted. He entered Riverside Military Academy in 1937 as a sophomore. For three years he excelled at everything the Academy offered – academics, the dance band and orchestra, drama, soccer, football, and rifle team. He graduated in 1940, but stayed on for a post-graduate year,

Herb did just that, but he cut his studies short when he enlisted in November 1942.

Beneath the list of his accomplishments it states his intentions to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology and study chemical engineering.

He served in the European Theatre of Operation (ETO) beginning in January 1945 with the 368th Fighter Squadron out of Station F133, East Wretham, England. His P51-D was painted with the name “Mary Lou.” They went down together just three months later.

ADVAN CE M E N T On April 13 while on Mission 343 to attack the marshaling yards at Neumunster, Germany, his unit strafed ground targets resulting in 15 enemy aircraft destroyed and seven locomotives.

While making an attack on ground aircraft south of Neumunster, Herb flew too close to trees and tore his coolant scoop off. Unable to gain altitude, he continued flying in an attempt to crash land, but instead the P51-D crashed into trees and fell burning to the ground northwest of Hamburg. No airman observed him exiting the plane, and Herb was presumed KIA. The U.S. Army Graves Registration Command conducted an investigation of the presumed crash site in 1950, but Herb’s wingman steered the Command to another site in Russian-controlled territory. Unsuccessful, the War Department declared John W. Herb’s remains to be un-recoverable, and the family was notified of the same.

But, Manfred Römer, who watched the burning plane fly directly over him

before crashing into the woods, never forgot that vivid scene. In 2002 he began interviewing older residents of the village and found other witnesses of the crash, who maintained the pilot survived but was shot by persons in uniform and buried nearby. He also learned of a grave, which had been cared for by a female forestry worker until her death in the 1960s.

Motivated by the loss of his own father in WWII, Römer, using a metal detector, continued his investigation and found parts of the wrecked airplane. At this point, he contacted German officials, which led to the notification of the American Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) investigation team.

In June 2014, Römer, now 74, led the team to the crash site, and Herb’s remains were found in a nearby shallow grave just 40 centimeters deep in the sandy soil.

“The scene and mood of the team were serious and somber as the excavation

continued,” wrote SFC Nicholas Deeb, a member of the team, in an email to RMA’s President, Dr. Jim Benson.

“While conducting dry screening of the surrounding dirt, the team found what, at first glance, seemed to be metal parachute material.”

The metal was not issued equipment, but Herb’s Riverside class ring with the year 1940 on one side of the blue stone and the initials JWH inscribed inside the band. There was no mistaking the identity of the pilot.

“At the completion of the operation both American and German tears were shed,” wrote Deeb.

It may be unsettling that Herb’s remains revealed an apparent gunshot wound in the back of his head, which was observed by the Luneburg Homicide Squad present at the exhumation, but for one German, Manfred Römer, the story is complete. John W. Herb is finally at rest.

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of the Academy, When you enter Arlington National Cemetery selfish thoughts of “I’m thirsty,” “Boy, it’s hot,” “When is lunch?” vanish. Regimental rows of simple white markers flow like a wave over the rolling hills.

Sacrifice on such a scale is rarely seen.

To be present at the June interment of 2nd Lt. John W. Herb, RMA class of 1940, was an institutional as well as personal honor. Herb’s story of crashing his P-51 into German woods and his ignoble death by a bullet in the back of his head is sobering. The discovery of his Riverside ring mingled with his remains is poignant. The stories of German citizen-heroes who never forgot are powerful and break boundaries imposed by war.

It’s no wonder that tears flowed freely as the military band played “Abide With Me” and Henry Lyte’s familiar lyrics came to mind.

Homecoming this year is October 16-17 and will honor RMA alumni who were killed in World War II and whose KIA status was discovered only recently. The weekend will also include a salute to RMA’s Cuban alumni, specifically Felipe Valls, ’50, owner of legendary Cuban restaurants in Miami and leader of the Cuban-American community. He will be honored as the Distinguished Alumnus for 2015. Read his story on page 31 and that of Foster Bachschmidt, ’06, Distinguished Young Alumnus, on page 32.

RIVERSIDE MILITARY ACADEMY 2014-2015 ANNUAL GIVING The RMA Board of Trustees and administration are pleased to present the following giving report from fiscal year 2014-2015 (June 1 – May 31).

To all of you whose names appear on the following pages, we say a heartfelt “Thank you!” Your giving at all levels means benefits to cadets, staff, and faculty as well as maintenance and repairs to our facilities. In addition, your gifts help provide tuition assistance for incoming cadets.

Giving for 2014-2015 was $1,252,373, which surpassed the year’s goal of $1.2 million.

Highlights from the year include: • The percentage of gifts coming from “friends of the Academy” grew from 25% to 34%, a direct result of the creation of the Sandy Beaver Entrepreneurial Leadership Award dinner and tuition assistance program. Thank you to all of our Gainesville and area friends!

• The total number of donors rose by 121 for a total of 708 donors. Last year’s number was 587.

• Small but mighty, the number of alumni donors is only 178 out of 5,361 active/known alumni, but their giving totaled $631,034.

The Georgia state tax credit program that benefits Riverside and other independent schools with scholarship dollars is proving to be extremely popular. In 2015, the $58 million cap was exceeded in record time on January 1. Because of this, the Department of Revenue prorated the amount among all the individuals and businesses who submitted applications on that day. This means that Riverside only received 63.4% of the amount that GOAL participants applied for. We encourage you to apply now since these precious tax credits are expected to again be exceeded on the first day of January 2016. Seventy years ago WWII in the European theatre came to an end with the formal acceptance by the Allies of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender.

It is appropriate, therefore, that Riverside honor Brothers in Blue who paid the ultimate price during WWII, but whose death in the war had not been documented by the Academy. A ceremony remembering these 31 alumni will be held Saturday, October 17 on Memorial Plaza on McLendon Quad at 11:40 a.m.

Research by Margaret Blackstock, RMA trustee and wife of the late Jerry B. Blackstock, ’62, identified and verified the additional names. Mrs. Blackstock, volunteer researcher, said the military records came to light as she researched alumni missing from the Academy’s database.

“The info simply began to appear as I made the searches for missing alumni.

Finding additional WWII dead was an unexpected bonus to an arduous task.

Once I ran through all alumni 1940 to present day, I decided to also determine what became of those in earlier decades, which grew the WWII list with additions from the 30s, one from ‘26, and another from ‘19,” said Mrs. Blackstock.

There are already three bronze plaques on Memorial Plaza commemorating perished alumni from WWII.The first is a memorial plaque with no names and was dedicated in 1990 by the class of 1940 at their 50th reunion.The next two were dedicated in 1993 by the “war class” of 1942 and list a total of 72 KIA alumni.

With the new research, the total known RMA alumni losses in WWII are 108.

Mrs. Blackstock is also responsible for verifying alumni killed in the Korean War, whose memories were honored at Founders’ Day 2014. She will now turn her skills to locating those alumni who perished in WWI, a far more difficult task.

Buddy has owned and flown many of the airplanes from World War II and afterwards, including the P 51, Hawker Sea Fury, PT 17, T-28B, B-25, and T-34. He currently owns and operates Utilco Railroad Services, Inc. in Tifton, GA.

Jose A. Villalobos, ’54, has been chosen as a recipient for History Miami’s 2015 Legal Legend Award. The award “celebrates history makers that have shaped the legal community of Miami, SouthFlorida and the nation.”

Class of 1989 Frank Reynolds, ’89, officially announced his candidacy for Cherokee County Sheriff in April of 2015. His career in law enforcement spans more than 20 years including work as an independent contractor in Iraq with the U.S Department of State’s High-Threat Protection Program.

CLASS PRESIDENT PROGRAM RECONNECTS WITH ALUMNI In 2013, Ron Fenner, ’66, began organizing an alumni class presidents (CP) program, with the sole purpose of reconnecting, reuniting, and informing Riverside alumni by class year. In its short history, the program has grown to over 30 alumni class presidents whose task is to contact each of their classmates, update their contact information, retrieve information about their past to be shared with their class, and inform their classmates. In doing so, much information about the Academy is shared that may not have been otherwise.

“It’s been a real pleasure spending time talking with so many alumni to get this program off the ground,” said Fenner. “We still have a lot to do; it’s been rewarding and a lot of fun doing it.”

Last fall, Robert H. Stoddard, ’64, was awarded the Class President Award in recognition of his outstanding work to reconnect and reunite his classmates at their 50th reunion during Homecoming.
