s this legendary institution completed its 116th academic year, we also approached 90% completion of RMA 2025, a five-year strategic plan launched in 2020. Using the plan as our compass, we continue to follow our true North in pursuit of excellence and the strategic plan’s priority areas of Cadet Experience, Culture of Family, Collaborative Environment, Enrollment Management, and Resource Management.

Every decision, from the launch of signature academic programs and the addition of highly skilled/experienced personnel in key leadership positions, to adopting branding study recommendations to market the Academy as a college preparatory boarding school while still preserving the values and traditions inherent in the military model of education, is intentionally focused on helping our students reach their highest potential.

While amidst a global pandemic, national trends of declining enrollment in both independent schools and colleges, declining numbers in the U.S. Armed Forces, and economic factors that have driven inflation and recession, our cadets, parents, faculty/ staff, alumni, and friends remain resilient and supportive through it all.

I am humbled that, despite inflation, donors continue to give generously to support Riverside and its cadets, setting new records. While we continue to educate about the importance of private financial contributions and their impact on enhancing the cadet experience, Riverside’s Board of Trustees, Board of Visitors, and Alumni Council achieved 100% participation in giving to the annual fund, and 82% of employees contributed. Their exemplary commitment serves as an inspirational

example as we build a culture of philanthropy among our closest constituency groups and strive for parents and alumni to stretch and reach national averages for independent school giving.

The Riverside community is learning just what we can do when we work together. It’s this shared strategic vision and these partnerships, especially with donors, that drive the 2022-2023 academic year accomplishments highlighted in this annual report. As you read on, you will find that donors help carve the path forward for the Academy’s sustainability, both through current gifts and by including Riverside in their estate plan.

Soon we will begin strategic planning for another five years of work that continues to propel the Academy and its students. Your partnership and gifts are needed and will continue to accelerate program enhancements, make it possible for students to attend, especially during these economic times, and help ensure Riverside’s future.

We are extremely grateful for your investment in the student experience and financial contributions to pay it forward for young men to benefit from Riverside’s mentorship, brotherhood, and academic achievement opportunities for all. Thank you for continuing with us on this journey!

Very respectfully,

Colonel(R) Stanley C. “Staś” Preczewski, U.S.A., Ph.D. President | scp@riversidemilitary.com 678-628-4872 – cell

CHARTERING CEREMONY

W

ith special guests gathered at Nimocks Quadrangle, May 3, 2023 marked a historic day on Riverside’s campus with the Georgia Civil Air Patrol chartering of its Riverside Prep Cadet Squadron. Along with members of Riverside’s Board of Trustees, donors, parents, alumni, distinguished guests from the Georgia Wing and Georgia Air National Guard, faculty and staff joined the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) chartering ceremony and reception that followed in the Carlos and Sandra Cervantes Theatre Lobby.

The program provides even more leadership opportunities and responsibility for Riverside cadets. After more than 18 months of collaboration with other aviationminded alumni, retired pilots, and CAP leaders, Riverside alumnus Ron Fenner, class of 1966, assembled the resources that brought the partnership with CAP to the Academy.

During the ceremony, Georgia Wing Commander Colonel Jeffrey Garrett, said “We are pleased to add Riverside Prep Academy as our 41st Squadron in the State. Their members will join the other 1,800 members within the Wing working together on our three congressionally

chartered missions: Aerospace Education, Cadet Programs, and Emergency Services. We are volunteers serving America’s communities, saving lives, and shaping futures.”

When funding needs for the CAP flight simulator became apparent, Fenner stepped up again and agreed to encourage donor contributions from his former classmates and others. Through generous donations made by the Class of 1966, more than $10,000 was raised to help fund the Red Bird TD-2 flight simulator with everything needed to simulate flight training, including multiple panels, computer screens, and rudders.

Riverside President COL(R) Staś Preczewski, said, “As President, I receive many suggestions and potential program ideas, but much to his credit, Ron doesn’t simply make a suggestion in passing. He does the legwork, pulls together a task force, and gathers all the information and data before bringing it to me.”

Offi cially offered to cadets in August 2022, the new Civil Air Patrol program is a natural complement to Riverside’s Aerospace Engineering program that launched in 2021.

Let's Go Live

The ability to livestream events offers parents, alumni, and friends the next best thing to being there. As technology continues to evolve, it becomes more accessible, but not always more affordable.

Former trustee and alumnus Andy Talkington, '71 recognizes the value of technology and wanted to assist with Riverside’s needs for new and advanced livestream equipment. He said, “I really believe that more access to Riverside’s daily life and the cadet development programs will reinforce the value of our military model. Plus, the campus is and always has been a beautiful and valuable asset to promote in the Academy’s marketing efforts”

With sincere thanks for Mr. Talkington’s generous donations this year, the Video Production program purchased several new pieces of advanced equipment, including a robotic camera and digital camcorders, for improved quality and production of both livestreamed events and recordings. Due to this donation, more parents were able to “participate” in the end of year awards, Silver Taps, and Commencement Ceremonies and were delivered a higher quality stream.

Mr. Jamie Chuven, video production instructor, and his students are excited about the new equipment and the opportunity to grow the program, including ENN broadcasts.

LUCILE E. BEAVER

FEB 1, 1962 - DEC 15, 2020

HOME at Last

On a chilly winter day with clear blue skies overhead, Riverside was honored to memorialize Lucile E. Beaver’s remains upon their return home. Lucile is the final family member to be laid to rest in the Beaver-Lowry family plot at Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville, Georgia.

After Lucile’s passing on December 15, 2020, her body was donated to Georgetown University Medical School for anatomical research, in accordance with her wishes.

Riverside’s memorial and inurnment took place on February 6, 2023, with Riverside’s Chaplain Lt Col Robert Powers and Reverend Shon Peppers, First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville, presiding. Several current and former trustees, community members, friends, Riverside executive staff, and special guests gathered in Alta Vista’s mausoleum for remembrance and reflection. Lucile’s cousin Angela Beaver Mack and long-time attorney John Quinn were among those in attendance.

Fellow trustee, Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) US Army Frederick J. Kennedy, '64, referred to Lucile as the “essence of the best of the Greatest Generation,” and fondly spoke of her important role in developing Riverside’s young men through the teaching of etiquette.

Lucile loved and served Riverside all her life. The daughter of General Sandy Beaver, Riverside’s longest-tenured president for more than 50 years until his passing in 1969, Lucile grew up at Riverside and attended class with the cadets on the Hollywood campus in the winter months. After earning a master’s degree in library science from Columbia University, she served as Riverside’s librarian for a brief time before pursuing a career as a professional librarian serving at the highest levels of government. After her father’s passing, she traveled to Gainesville and served on Riverside’s Board of Trustees for more than 43 years. In 2013, the Riverside library was named in her honor, The Lucile Beaver Library

Before returning to campus for a reception at Mitchell Quarters, guests processed past the burial site where clergy, pallbearers, and the Cadet Color Guard stoodfast at the graveside while Cadet Master Sergeant Evan Schneider, '25, played “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes.

REMEMBERING A RIVERSIDE ICON

Scan to watch the video tribute celebrating Colonel Nichols.

With “My Old Kentucky Home” playing as guests arrived, more than 100 alumni and friends gathered on February 5, 2023 at Riverside’s Curtis Hall. Many traveled great distances to attend the memorial service celebrating the life of our beloved Richard M. Nichols. Per wishes in his estate plan, the service took place on the gym floor of the Richard M. Nichols Arena, named in his honor years ago, thanks to the generous financial contributions of alumni.

Known by his Riverside rank as Colonel Nichols, the Academy became his close family for more than 60 years. He served in many roles, including teacher, coach, athletic director, associate principal, and advisor, from 1962 until 2000. His love for the school and its cadets continued as an avid supporter even after retirement.

President Staś Preczewski referred to Nichols as a Riverside icon who impacted thousands of lives.

“Colonel Nichols was a dedicated faculty member and coach, whose passion for the school, the cadets, and athletics has made a real difference. His many accomplishments include bringing championship games

10 Riverside Military Academy

to the Academy and negotiating RMA sports into the Georgia High School Association (GHSA), and after retirement, serving on our Board of Trustees.”

Words of remembrance were shared by several close friends, including alumnus Ira J. Middleberg, '66, former Athletic Director Marc Paglia, and alumnus and dear friend, Errol J. Bisso, '61.

He took great pride in attending 60 consecutive Commencement ceremonies, presenting the Nichols Top-Athlete Award each year at Silver Taps, and establishing the Richard M. Nichols Scholarship, which provides a partial scholarship to a deserving student-athlete each year.

Alumni fondly remember Nichols as a mentor, whose valuable life lessons helped mold them into better

students and the men they are today. In 2015, Nichols was named an honorary alumnus

Every once in a while, a uniquely honest, intelligent, wise, and nurturing person comes along and sets his life to educate boys helping them to become men. Colonel Nichols was such a man, and I count myself fortunate to have been under his guidance. Dr. Mario Padilla, '67

ENGAGEMENT AT ITS BEST

Actions speak louder than words. There are some who talk about getting involved, and then, there are those who do. Riverside’s Class of 1966 continues to lead the way, setting the example for alumni engagement.

The class actively seeks projects where their support and participation will benefit the Academy and the cadets. Most often, the Class is being inspired by alumnus classmate Ron Fenner to make donations to fund a specific project that fills a program need. They have adopted fundraising projects that have earned them public recognition with two benches located outside of Alumni Hall and naming the Class of 1966 Family Park.

“When Fenner learned that financial support was needed to fund a flight simulator for the new Civil Air Patrol (CAP) program, I’m sure it was no surprise to his classmates to receive a call from him. They stepped up and responded. Ron led the initiative and several classmates joined him

in making donations to support the Academy. That is alumni engagement from a class who cares deeply for its alma mater,” said President Preczewski.

With deep appreciation to several donors in the Class of 1966, more than $10,000 was contributed to fund a Redbird TD-2 flight simulator with tools and accessories to simulate multiple conditions of flight training. This equipment is invaluable for the CAP program. Although CAP students have the opportunity on occasion to experience flight in a single-engine aircraft, the majority of their flight training occurs with the simulator.

For his dedicated philanthropy and leadership in bringing the CAP program to Riverside, the Civil Air Patrol Classroom is now named the Ronslow P. Fenner, '66

SHOOTING FOR THE STARS

With a new electronic lift system that adjusts targets to three different shooting positions, functional and aesthetic updates to the shooting range, new and refurbished precision rifles, and new precision uniforms, the Riverside rifle team is motivated to compete at their best in the coming season.

The electronic lift system allows the students to fire from the prone and kneeling positions without climbing on and off tables. The new electronic lift system will allow Riverside’s team to be more competitive with teams that have these systems in place.

Greg and Christi Fisher, parents of 2013 graduate Nicholai Fisher, quickly responded to the Academy’s need to update the lift system in the G. C. Fisher Rifle Marksmanship Center with a gift to help fund the new lifts.

The couple’s generous philanthropy spans multiple initiatives across the campus and includes generous support of the Rifle program and naming of the center in 2009.

An anonymous donor matched the Fisher’s support so that installation of the new lift system could begin over the winter furlough, and then generously increased the gift to include additional updates to the range, refurbishing of the precision rifles, and new precision uniforms.

Senior Army Instructor Lieutenant Colonel(R) David Lee expressed deep gratitude for the financial support of these donors, “I can’t say enough about the difference these contributions will have on our program this year. Our shooters are excited and more confident than ever.”

“We are grateful to these donors for their donations which help ensure the best experience for our students. Each year, gifts of all sizes have a significant impact on the quality of programs.”

MODELING CAMARADERIE

In response to the Academy’s initiative to remodel the barracks dayrooms and enhance the cadet experience by creating a more comfortable space, Bruce and Ann Press, parents of 2023 graduate AJ Press, came forward with a generous lead gift and then issued a matching challenge for gifts toward the project from other families in the same company.

More than 26% of the company’s parents participated, which was impressive given that most of the cadets were new that semester to Riverside, and still getting acclimated. Holding fast to their commitment, the Press family matched those donations, and then contributed the remainder of the project cost.

On May 12, 2023, with grateful cadets lining either side of the hallway as they entered the barracks, the Press Family was recognized for their generosity and honored with the naming and dedication of the Press Family Dayroom.

In his appreciation remarks, President Staś Preczewski said, “Since starting this initiative two years ago, we have seen that an updated dayroom with modern furnishings will draw cadets out of their rooms to socialize and develop camaraderie. The Press family’s challenge and major gift support helped remodel a dayroom in a barracks company with mostly new cadets, making it very timely and impactful.”

Through the support of families and friends, five of seven company dayrooms have been remodeled. Thank you to all who have contributed to this priority initiative!

LEGACY, IT'S A RIVERSIDE AFFAIR

Alumni who attended Riverside when General Sandy Beaver served as President remember that he returned donations and did not encourage them to visit or stay connected with the Academy after graduation. However, he was notably supportive of families and cadets while enrolled.

Just as generous donors today provide partial scholarships, there were cadets whose enrollment was made possible by Beaver assisting parents in-need with tuition payments from his personal finances.

The irony of not accepting donor support is that Beaver knew there would come a time when philanthropy would be needed to ensure Riverside’s future and sustainability To plan for Riverside’s future, both General Beaver and his daughter Lucile included the Academy in their

THE BEAVER FAMILY LEGACY SOCIETY

estate plans. Developing young men at Riverside for success in life was more than Beaver’s profession, it was his true calling, and his family legacy.

To honor the visionary leadership, service and generosity of the Beaver family, Riverside is launching a planned giving program named The Beaver Family Legacy Society. “Now is the opportunity to pay homage,” stated vice president for advancement, Ellen DeFoor. “The countless men and families who have benefited from Riverside are invited to follow General Beaver’s example and provide for the future of Riverside through a bequest or other planned gift.”

As alumnus Jette Campbell, '65 recently explained, “Those who attended the Academy during General Beaver’s tenure are the remaining members of his Riverside family and his legacy beyond the financial support that he provided. We need to support Riverside to continue General Beaver’s legacy, financially and otherwise. Just as we are his legacy, the cadets who come after us are our legacy!”

Special thank you to those already following his example.
