Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of the Academy: What drew me to Riverside Military Academy is likely to draw you here as well: the sight of over 500 teenage boys, clean-cut, uniformed, infinitely respectful and courteous, headed to rigorous college prep courses, dining together, competing in athletics together, studying diligently – yes, diligently – then in bed at a decent hour, and up the next morning, early, to do it all again. High morale, spirit, and teamwork define their temperaments. Personal honesty is non-negotiable. Is this a 2016 middle school and high school? You bet it is, but even better: it’s a 21st century military academy, the best of its kind, in Gainesville, Georgia. Riverside employs a military model to establish the context within which individual development occurs. The customs, courtesies, and traditions recognizable as “military” in nature are in essence this: a proven system of organizational and operational practices that teach critical leadership skills to adolescent young men. Included are: 1) communication skills; 2) teamwork and collaboration; 3) adaptability; 4) problem solving; 5) critical thinking; and 6) conflict resolution. Imbedded in these are personal traits like dependability, integrity, professional appearance, and work ethic. This is the value added by the military model. Together with the math, science, and liberal arts curriculum and an ever-present emphasis on physical fitness and wellness, it is the perfect environment to prepare boys for success in college and beyond. Thank you for your continued support of this 109-year-old venerable institution. The beneficiaries are the Cadets, terrific young men of character, currently representing 30 states and 27 countries. We could not do it without you. Plan to visit Riverside’s stunning campus soon. It is the most patriotic, optimistic, achievement-oriented, and respectful 200 acres you’ll ever find. Sincerely,

William J. Gallagher Colonel, US Army, Retired President

“ Riverside Military Academy is the perfect environment to prepare boys for success in college and beyond.”

Benson Quad to be Dedicated at Homecoming 2016 The RMA Alumni Association is leading an initiative to create a permanent legacy on campus in honor of Colonel and Mrs. James H. Benson. Col Benson, who retired in May as Riverside’s eighth president, left an indelible imprint on Riverside in his seven years. Col and Mary arrived on campus in 2009 in the midst of an economic recession when the Academy was experiencing a declining enrollment, financial instability, and the Corps had lost the discipline alumni expected to see when back on campus. “They worked tirelessly and smartly to make Riverside arguably the finest secondary military academy in the United States,” said Ken McKelvey, chairman of the RMA Board of Trustees. A grateful Alumni Association, led by Chairman Ron Fenner, and with the backing of the RMA Board of Trustees, led a drive to raise $60,000, which has been surpassed, to name the quadrangle inside the barracks “Benson Quadrangle.” The contributions will fund a scholarship in the names of Col and Mary Benson to be used to provide tuition assistance to a cadet in need. All alumni, parents, and guests on campus for Homecoming and Parents’ Weekend are invited to attend the quad dedication Saturday, October 14 at 11:15 a.m.

RIVERSIDE’S SAILING CLUB LAUNCHED

The sailing team at Riverside was launched with a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Kirby Smith III, grandparents of Cadet Kirby Smith.

REVEILLE I SUMMER 2016

The new Riverside Military Academy Sailing Club launched in Spring 2016 with six cadets participating on cool days with good winds. The cadets, who ranged from absolute novices to nine years’ sailing experience, met at the Lake Lanier Sailing Club in Flowery Branch, where they went sailing in Club 420 dinghies under the tutelage of the LLSC Junior Sailing Program instructors. Cadets learned capsize drills, water safety, and other practical skills followed by hours of sailing on Lake Lanier. Club members also have opportunities to participate in sailing regattas that promote the enjoyment of sailing and skill development in young sailors. The sailing club cadets had a great time and said they were looking forward to this upcoming school year in which they hope to expand their season to the entire school year. 3

Two Seniors Receive Appointments to U.S. Service Academies Adriane K. Seymour, Director of Communications

The class of 2016 added two more cadets to the current total of 9 Riverside alumni attending one of these prestigious Academies.

The admissions process to the five U.S. Service Academies is an extensive, challenging, and highly competitive process. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, and the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs each require an applicant to submit preliminary academic and extracurricular activities in an on-line file and successfully pass a pre-candidate review before an application can be fully opened. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy have slightly different requirements. U.S. News & World Report, Princeton Review, and Forbes.com annually rank these service academies as some of the most selective colleges and universities in America. Graduates of West Point, the Naval Academy, and the Air Force Academy receive a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission as an officer in their respective service branch. In all cases, there is a service obligation of a five year minimum. The class of 2016 added two more cadets to the current total of nine Riverside alumni attending one of these prestigious Academies. Riverside alumnus MAJ Charles H. Cook, ’74, and West Point Admissions Officer presented C/1LT Watson Thomas with his appointment to the United States Military Academy – West Point. Thomas joins fellow Riverside alumni Mac Sims, ’13; John Nettles, ’13; Jacob Deem, ’14; John-Mark MacFarlane, ’14; and Tucker Pearson, ’15 this fall. The second honor was presented by Mr. Bill Kokaly, Field Representative for Congressman Doug Collins of the United States’ Congress, to C/SSG Jonathan Olson who received his appointment to the United States Air Force Academy. Olson will join Riverside alumnus Harrison Summerour, ’15 this fall. The scholarship value of these service appointments combined is over $430,000, and upon graduation from these universities, graduates will be commissioned as a second lieutenant to begin their military careers. Congratulations on these outstanding accomplishments!

Valedictorian and Salutatorian Deliver Inspiring, Thankful Addresses to the Class of 2016 Adriane K. Seymour, Director of Communications

The word valedictorian stems from “valediction”, which is from a Latin root meaning “to say farewell to” and also refers to the student with the highest academic rank in his class, who has earned the honor of giving the valedictory, or farewell, speech at a graduation ceremony. Standing at the top of the academic hill of the class of 2016 was C/2LT Jae Kyum Kim. With a keen intellect and relentless work ethic, he embodies academic excellence. In his six years at Riverside, he earned an overall grade point average of 4.30. He maintained a challenging course load that included AP chemistry, AP biology, AP calculus, and AP physics. He was a member of the soccer team, the swim team, and a key player in the symphonic winds. As Kim opened his address during Silver TAPS, he stated, “I am a South Korean immigrant turned American citizen. It was a selfless decision by my parents to leave their home and dedicate time, effort, and money to pursue their citizenship. It was only through their naturalization that I was given the gift of becoming an American. Clearly, there were numerous advantages that became forever mine.” Kim concluded his speech by saying, “Many of my friends view becoming an American citizen as a privilege. To some extent, they are correct. But if my time in Riverside and as an American citizen has taught me anything, it is also a responsibility. Now I know that it is this responsibility that has made America the great nation that it is today, and I know it is now up to me to carry out the same responsibility with all the courage, compassion, and resolve that lies within me.”

“ My mother is the strongest woman I have ever known. I have the honor of being named a class salutatorian on this stage right now because of all the sweat and tears that my dear sweet mother has given throughout the years.” — C/1LT An Nyugen, Salutatorian

C/1LT An Nguyen, our salutatorian, was conscientious and diligent to an exceptional degree, ending his high school career with a GPA of 4.19. Arriving at Riverside in 2013, he challenged himself with a rigorous academic schedule which included AP chemistry, AP English literature, AP calculus, and AP biology. In his four years, he was a central leader in the band program as well as the Riverside Drill Team. As an international cadet from Vietnam, C/1LT Nguyen didn’t have a chance to go home on open weekends, and he began his speech by thanking many parents, staff, and friends in the audience who took him under their wings. “My mother is the strongest woman I have ever known. I have the honor of being named a class salutatorian on this stage right now because of all the sweat and tears that my dear sweet mother has given throughout the years. Even though she’s a successful vice-chief editor for a major magazine in Vietnam, she has self-taught the ways in this complicated business world to be able to support, as she always called, her ‘investment for our family’s greater and happier future.’”

“ This is a quality Academy. It is genuine, even if imperfect. As the years pass, you will realize that more and more and appreciate your teachers, TACs, and coaches that counseled, mentored, and encouraged you when you stumbled.”

Dr. James H. Benson, Col, USMC (Ret) Delivers 2016 Commencement Speech Adriane K. Seymour, Director of Communications

On a clear May morning on the McLendon Quadrangle, overlooking the majestic north Georgia mountains, Dr. James H. Benson, Col, USMC (Ret), delivered his final speech as president of Riverside Military Academy to the 135 members of the graduating class of 2016. Surrounded by hundreds of parents, alumni, friends, and families, Col Benson said to the soon-to-be graduates, “You are to be congratulated for the sacrifices, support, and counsel that made this remarkable morning possible. Cadets, you are the 109th class to exit the halls where superior students excel and average students go on to succeed and lead.” “But, what should it mean to you that you enrolled, studied, and succeeded at a demanding military academy where the daily expectations far exceed anything that your peers ever experienced in high school for even a day? It should mean that you are now part of a unique, life-long fraternity of friends-which you will appreciate, communicate with, and visit with for many years hence. “Today, you have much to be proud of, and we as faculty and staff are proud of you. And as you depart, so shall I. As you look forward to new challenges, so do I. I am sure that 8

I would flunk retirement, so I hope to do something in between but something that includes more discretionary time. I know that you are looking forward to the same. I will miss the class of 2016 and those present today who will follow. This is a quality Academy. It is genuine, even if imperfect. As the years pass, you will realize that more and more and appreciate your teachers,TACs, and coaches that counseled, mentored, and encouraged you when you stumbled.” Col Benson became the president of Riverside Military Academy on June 1, 2009. In January 2016, Col Benson announced his departure from Riverside Military Academy effective May 31, 2016, upon completion of his seventh year. Under Col Benson’s leadership from 2009-2016 the Academy’s enrollment grew from 293 to 540 cadets from 27 countries and 30 states, and the operating revenue grew from just over $9 million to over $19 million. The Academy raised over $8 million in contributions during the same time frame. Additionally, over his seven-year tenure, Col Benson increased need-based financial aid from $176,000 to more than $2.5 million, helping families who would not otherwise be able to afford a Riverside education.

Graduate’s Artwork Displayed at Lake Lanier Olympic Park By Adriane K. Seymour, Director of Communications

Summer Olympic qualifier races were held here in Gainesville at the Lake Lanier Olympic Park during the June Pan American Championships, and the work of local artists, including recent Riverside graduate Trevor Ballard, ’16, was on display. Shortly before graduation, Ballard was notified that he had been selected as the Youth Art Month “Quinlan Award” winner. His artwork, entitled “Peace,” was one of five pieces selected to be a part of the 2016 Free Range Art Project. The Quinlan Visual Arts Center partnered with Vision 2030 of the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce to lead the Free Range Art Project that promotes art within the community through the creation of large-scale works of art installed in the public sphere throughout the City of Gainesville and Hall County. While the other artwork will be moved around Gainesville, “Peace” will remain at the park, according to the Quinlan. “It feels awesome knowing there will be thousands and maybe even millions of people seeing my artwork,” Ballard said about his piece being selected for the project. “This was the biggest competition I’ve been in for art.” Ballard explained he is inspired by things he sees or something going on in the world. But “Peace” was a little more difficult to describe. “I don’t really know how to explain it, but with all the turmoil going on around the world I needed to figure something out that would bring everybody together, bring peace to everybody,” Ballard said. The message for the chosen artwork is clear, and Ballard hopes each person who sees it will take something away from it. 10

RMA Educators Immersed In Colonial Williamsburg Life By Julie A. Smith, Multimedia Manager

Five RMA educators – MSgt. Dennis Bagwell, Colonel Robert Cagle, Mr. William McBride, Mr. Andrew Pedry, and Mr. Daniel Tymchuk – had the privilege to attend the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute in Virginia this June. The Teacher Institute is presented by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. During six-day sessions, participants and a Master Teacher engage in an interdisciplinary approach to teaching social studies with the focus on American history. Teachers from across the country gathered to exchange ideas with historians and meet character interpreters in the Revolutionary City. They worked collaboratively each day, examining interactive teaching methods and developing instructional materials that make history come alive for their students. “I know that each of us have come home re-energized about our profession, with the seeds of ideas about how we might bring such active, situated learning into our classrooms,” shared Mr. McBride. The group studied civics through the lens of American history with the understanding that citizens are continually debating the proper balance between essential American values (ex: freedom and equality, law and ethics, unity and diversity, private wealth and common wealth). They explored these themes and made connections to present-day issues during visits to Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Richmond. Riverside alumnus Raymond Thomasson, '69, of Nashville, TN, proposed the trip to the Riverside administration in early 2016. He generously offered to fund it through a gift to The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. “With the increasing number of international students at Riverside, many who come from families involved in government, politics, or businesses in their own home countries, as well as the American students, the need to have more knowledge and appreciation for the American Revolution and the forming/creation of our country that might be important academically,” wrote Mr. Thomasson. In addition to the scholarships to the institute, Mr. Thomasson’s gift provides access to The Idea of America™, an all-digital U.S. history and civics program, during the 2016-17 school year as well as subscriptions to HERO, Colonial Williamsburg’s online multimedia library of history education resources. MSgt. Bagwell said, “The Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute trip far exceeded my expectations. The site itself was fascinating and the educational opportunity that it afforded our group was superb. We are very thankful to Mr. Thomasson for his sponsorship of this wonderful trip.”

A Message to Parents from the Dean of Academic Affairs: Earlier this year I was entertaining the idea of purchasing a new laptop. I’m not really a tech guy and typically consider appearance, price, and screen size as my top concerns. I have bought a few slow and unreliable computers on account of this misguided focus. One thing I do know is that any computer that I buy must have ‘Intel Inside.’ I do not know what this ‘Intel’ thing is or why it needs to be in my computer but I have led myself to believe that it is essential to have it. As luck will have it, I was recently reading Visible Learning for Teachers by John Hattie, and in the very first chapter he describes ‘Intel Inside’, which is actually a processor, or the “brain” of the computer. He says “it is the key to the success of the software and other hardware that makes up the workings of the computer.” Hattie goes on to say that schools are much like a computer and rely on their core attributes (Intel Inside) to make the most effective use of its resources. Without these core values a school cannot make effective use of its software or its hardware.

“ Though I am not entirely sure what this “Intel Inside” is for our cadets, I know it includes, character, leadership, integrity, positivity, drive, and discipline.”

Since starting at Riverside I have known that our cadets are different to their student counterparts across the country. I have relied on my scant knowledge of French to describe this difference as that, “je ne sais quoi.” Perhaps I should use the term “Intel Inside.” Our cadets have a special something that develops within them during their time here that allows them to bring their talents to bear in a way that others cannot. In many ways, like a processor, it is the most important element within them. This processor is responsible for millions of calculations every day and will allow our cadets to navigate an increasingly complex world. Though I am not entirely sure what this “Intel Inside” is for our cadets, I know it includes, character, leadership, integrity, positivity, drive, and discipline. In 2014 Google spent a good deal of money and time as part of Project Oxygen, in which they attempted to identify the traits that make great managers at Google successful. In the end, they settled on the following 8 traits: 1. Be a good coach. 2. Empower others. 3. Be interested in your direct reports. 4. Be productive.

5. Communicate (and listen!). 6. Help others in their development. 7. Have a vision. 8. H ave the key skills and knowledge so you can advise others.

I think I could have saved the Google executives all the time and money they spent by inviting them to RMA and telling them it’s the “Intel Inside” that matters. I wish every cadet a successful academic year and extend special encouragement to our seniors. We look forward to seeing you cross the stage in May. Respectfully,

Jamie P. Green Dean of Academic Affairs 12

RMA Welcomes New Band Directors By Julie A. Smith, Multimedia Manager

The Riverside Bands include the military marching bands, three concert bands, three percussion ensembles, the Commanders Jazz Band, the Battalion Bugle Corps, the Grenadiers Rope Drum Line, and various chamber ensembles. Riverside is a member of District 14 in the Georgia Music Educators Association.

Calling all Cadet String Players Riverside seeks to help all cadets develop their skills and passions. Cadets, who play String instruments, like violin, viola, cello, or double bass, have typically had few outlets on campus to continue that interest. This year, Riverside is excited to offer an opportunity for these musicians to continue playing. First Baptist Church of Gainesville offers a beginning string orchestra on Thursday nights, and the director, Mr. Steve Coldiron, welcomes cadets as part of the group. The repertoire tends to light material, including popular music, as well as classical fare. There is no cost associated with this orchestra unless your cadet will wish to rent an instrument from the church. Our band director, CWO Mr. Stephen Giove, has offered to support the initiative by providing practice rooms, practice time, and storage space for the instruments. Our chaplain, Mr. Tim Cummings, is also interested in utilizing strings at the Sunday chapel services. If you would like your cadet to participate in this new program, please contact Mr. Andy Jobson, our faculty liaison, at ajobson@riversidemilitary.com, and he will provide more details. Riverside Cadet Receives Scholarship to Study Chinese Abroad By Julie A. Smith, Multimedia Manager Chinese is one of seven non-Western European languages recognized as being critical to U.S. national security. Rising senior C/CPT Adam Stumpf recently received a scholarship from the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) and spent this summer studying in China. The NSLI-Y program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly taught languages in overseas immersion programs. It is part of a U.S. government initiative preparing American citizens to be leaders in a global world with the necessary linguistic skills and cultural knowledge to promote international dialogue and support American engagement abroad. The NSLI-Y summer programs are six to eight weeks in duration with students earning a minimum of 120 language class hours. The program increases students’ Chinese language proficiency through intensive in-class language instruction, cultural presentations and activities, service activities with community-focused organizations, and host family stays. All participants must complete post-program language tests. The Chinese program of NSLI-Y is administered by Beijing University in Zhuhai City, China. Of Riverside’s Chinese (Mandarin) language program, C/CPT Stumpf says, “This course is not for the faint-hearted; it’s rigorous but provides an experience you will not find anywhere else. Even compared to other foreign language classes the pacing is fast, and you’re expected to provide quality work. Within two years of taking Chinese classes at RMA, I’ve already received scholarships.” C/CPT Stumpf hopes to use his immersion experiences in the Chinese language and culture to serve as an officer in the U.S. Army, possibly with a career in marketing, and in mission work for his church. Riverside’s Chinese Studies Program was established in 2013 by the program’s first teacher, Mark Reedy, who is also Riverside’s Class of 1992 valedictorian. The curriculum provides students with a foundation in the Chinese language, history, and culture while gaining an edge in fields such as international business and government. All of the students take the HSK test of Chinese language ability, which is internationally recognized by universities and businesses, at the conclusion of each course. Reedy learned firsthand the importance of speaking Mandarin from his previous travels as Foreign Service Officer for the U.S. Diplomatic Corps and years of employment in international relations, finance, and economics. Reedy also established mixed martial arts elective courses that focus on understanding martial arts principles while learning techniques from boxing, wrestling, judo, Brazilian jujitsu, Muay Thai, and other martial arts. 15 REVEILLE I SUMMER 2016

COVETED SERVICE ACADEMY LEADERSHIP SEMINARS CHOOSE RIVERSIDE CADETS By Julie A. Smith, Multimedia Manager

Each of the U.S. Service Academy summer leadership seminars is highly competitive. The sought-after acceptances are a feather in the cap of any cadet hoping to receive a Service Academy nomination and acceptance during his senior year of high school. A group of Riverside Military Academy rising seniors were accepted to the coveted Service Academy summer leadership seminars held at the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) and the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) during summer 2016. The U.S. Military Academy’s Summer Leadership Experience (SLE) gives high school juniors a week to experience life as a West Point cadet. SLE is a fast-paced program of academic classes, military training, physical fitness training and intramural athletics conducted during the month of June each year. The SLE application is a two part process. Part one consists of a “Candidate Questionnaire”, which is also the first part of the USMA application process and will save time later if the candidate applies to become a USMA cadet. Part two consists of the SLE application. Approximately 500 students are selected to attend SLE for each of the two sessions. Learn more about SLE at http://www.usma.edu/admissions/SitePages/Summer.aspx. The U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar (NASS) is a fast-paced, six-day experience with an academic focus for high achievers who are rising seniors in high school. NASS teaches about life at the Naval Academy in Annapolis and how academics, athletics, and professional training are equally important to developing our nation's leaders. Applicant selection is based on criteria including academic performance; demonstrated achievement in leadership, athletics, and extracurricular activities; physical fitness; self-discipline; and good moral character. Each student attends eight 90-minute workshops covering topics such as: information technology, martial arts, language studies, meteorology, mechanical engineering, oceanography, aerospace flight testing, mathematics, and naval architecture. Learn more about NASS at http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/Programs/NASS/index.php. We look forward to watching these capable young men as they navigate the U.S. Service Academy application process throughout their senior year at Riverside Military Academy. 16

Remarkable Lacrosse Athlete Visits Riverside By Alan Tallman, Head Lacrosse Coach

The Game Breaker Lacrosse camp was held on Riverside’s campus this summer and was directed by Casey Powell, who has arguably had the most storied career in the sport. Powell is completing his final season with the Florida Launch of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) after announcing his retirement from professional lacrosse. This follows one of the most prolific comebacks in sports history. After retiring in 2011, he returned to play for the Chesapeake Bayhawks in 2013. He garnered the MLL Most Valuable Player award with the Launch in 2014 at the age of 38. He is the all-time leading scorer in MLL history, was Team USA Captain, and is one of the National Lacrosse League’s top players of all-time. His sojourn at Riverside was especially memorable for me as Eagles’ lacrosse coach since he introduced me to the sport in the fourth grade.Young Casey Powell, a high school senior at the time, visited my gym class to familiarize us with the game, and the rest is history. Powell and I are both Carthage High School (NY) alumni and have remained friends for more than 20 years. The Riverside Lacrosse Team continues to grow in size and talent each year. I look forward to once again sharing with cadets the strong foundation in lacrosse given to me by the remarkable Casey Powell.

Cadets Graduate from Inaugural Medical Scholars Program

Rising seniors (pictured above, left to right) C/SGT Austin Lam, C/CSM Ivan Pearson, and C/SSG Ramses Sanchez were part of the graduating class in the inaugural run of Brenau University’s Medical Scholars Program last spring. A limited number of students with an interest in the healthcare field were nominated and selected from local high schools. Brenau’s Medical Scholars Program gives high school students an up-close view into the world of medical training. Once each month January through April 2016, students visited Brenau and experienced a day-long immersion in different healthcare modules. The initiative is coordinated in conjunction with the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce with support from the Foothills Area Health Education Center. Some of the topics discussed included psychology, nursing, biology, occupational therapy, pre-med, genetics, and college admissions for students in the health sciences field. They also had opportunities to participate in realistic simulations such as psychotic confusion, medical mannequins (giving birth, having a heart attack, brain aneurysm, etc.), and a tour of the Brenau University Human Donor Lab.

U.S. Marine Corps recruiters invite high school educators, counselors, and coaches to become temporary recruits at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, SC each year. Riverside’s Assistant Academic Dean Gary Papka and College Counselor Ed Benson joined other educators for the four-day Marine Corps Educator Gary Papka Workshop where they were welcomed by Marine Corps Drill Sergeants at the Depot’s “Yellow Footprints.” Educators learn first-hand about the challenging obstacle courses, classroom instruction, and discipline of close order drill. Real Marine recruits must complete a 12 week training program. Benson says, “The Educator Workshop is a phenomenal Ed Benson experience for all.You will come away with such an appreciation of what our soldiers do for this country, the sacrifices they make to become a Marine, and the character building they learn. By far, the best experience I have had as an educator.” The Educator Workshop also introduces educators to the personal development, career, and educational opportunities available to today’s Marines. “The Marine Corps Educator’s Workshop was a great experience and one that I would recommend to anyone. It was very enlightening to be able to experience firsthand how Marines are ‘made’ and it gave me a greater appreciation for those who serve in the armed forces and defend our country,” states Papka.

Letter From the Commandant Dedication: Throughout my career in the military, I was surrounded by dedication. The willingness and desire of those who serve this great country is a rare dedication, calling, and way of life. Men and women freely give their time, energy, and sometimes their lives. I retired from a military career certain I would never be surrounded by such dedication again. It feels gratifying to share with you that I was wrong in my assumption. As I made the choice to retire from active duty and transition myself and my family into civilian life, I knew that Riverside was the perfect opportunity to pursue my passion for teaching and guiding young people, while embracing the familiar military model. After more than one year as Commandant of Cadets, I can say without a doubt, that RMA is committed to helping young men reach their full potential through the dedication of its faculty and staff. We have incredible facilities housed on an extraordinary campus, but it is Riverside’s team of men and women that truly make the difference. The dedication exemplified by Riverside’s staff is beyond what I expected to find in any environment outside of my former career. It is an honor and privilege to again work beside professionals who freely give their time and energy to serve Riverside’s mission of shaping today’s youth into responsible members of society prepared to face the world before them. As Commandant of Cadets, I am fully committed to carry out Riverside’s mission in my role and am grateful to have been blessed with this opportunity. The Mission of Riverside Military Academy is to prepare ethical young men of character for success in college and in life through the provision of a rigorous academic program, leadership opportunities, competitive athletics, extensive co-curricular activities, and the structure and discipline inherent in a military preparatory school environment. For the Corps,

James G. Spivey, Lieutenant Colonel, SF Commandant of Cadets

Dear Brothers, Parents, and Friends, I wish to congratulate the 135 graduates of the class 2016! The class was welcomed into the RMA Alumni Association at a challenge coin ceremony on Friday morning before Saturday’s commencement. This Riverside tradition pairs alumni with cadets in a solemn moment of transition into the alumni association. It was heartening to see the number of very recent alumni who came back to campus for the early morning ceremony. The recent retirement of Col James H. Benson, past president of RMA, surprised and saddened many of us. Col Benson leaves behind a legacy of excellence, an Academy staff second to none, and a cadet Corps committed to character development and personal achievement. Col Benson and Mary will be sorely missed.

“ With help from our last homecoming survey we are putting forth an ambitious schedule that should include events for everyone to enjoy.”

On June 10, William J. Gallagher, Colonel, U.S. Army (retired), became the Academy’s ninth president. As part of the presidential process, my interview committee members and I found COL Gallagher to be one who leads from the front with a mission to build and expand the Academy. It is evident he will continue the tradition of excellence in sustaining the quality education for cadets. Riverside’s future is indeed bright. We are closing in on Homecoming, which is October 14-15. All alumni are warmly invited back to campus, and class years that end in a “one” or a “six” have a reunion this year. I’m hearing from a number of class presidents who are gunning to have the most classmates back on campus. With help from our last homecoming survey we are putting forth an ambitious schedule that should include events for everyone to enjoy. See the registration on page 27 of this issue, or register online at www.riversidemilitary.com. The Homecoming hotline is also open at 770-532-6215, ext. 2212. Many alumni may not be aware of The Blue Line, a bi-weekly email newsletter which drops into inboxes on Friday afternoons. It’s a short round up of RMA news about alumni and cadets. If you don’t receive it, the Academy may not have your email address. Contact Lori Peppers at 770-532-6215, ext. 2212 to be included on the distribution list. I look forward seeing you at Homecoming 2016! Respectfully yours,

Ron P. Fenner Jr., ’66 Chairman Alumni Association

s t a R r e v Ri a d i r o l F in Balmy Florida was the setting for two gatherings of alumni last February. RMA Trustee Bernie Freeman, ’58, hosted a luncheon in Vero Beach that brought together five alumni from the 50s and their guests. Conversation ranged from “do you remember?” to memories of trips to Cuba and Hollywood, FL. Christian Eiroa, ’89, and his wife, Alexandra, hosted 50 alumni at their beautiful home in south Miami. Christian, owner and president of CLE Cigars, had an employee onsite rolling cigars while caterers prepared seafood paella poolside. Miss Beaver Celebrates 90th Birthday By Nelda S. Browning, Executive Assistant to the President

Miss Lucile Beaver, the youngest child and last surviving member of the General Sandy Beaver family, celebrated her 90th birthday February 4, 2016 with friends and caretakers at the Goodwin House, her residence in Falls Church,VA. Many of you reading this will remember Miss Beaver with respect and admiration. She was the only female to attend Riverside, having had classes with the cadets both at the Gainesville and Hollywood, Florida campuses. She has led a very full and active lifestyle having served many years both locally and abroad as librarian and for over 43 years on the Riverside Board of Trustees. She has been a valued confidant and trusted advisor, and she still maintains a deep interest and affection for Riverside and its Corps of Cadets. You might be interested to know that 90 years does not slow her down so far as operas are concerned. Her Washington Opera and National Symphony series have been renewed for this year, however, her caregiver will attend with her. Happy Birthday, Miss Beaver, and enjoy the operas!

Birthday celebrants left to right: Don Misner, ’53, Gloria Misner, and Miss Beaver.

Medal of Honor Recipient Visits Cadets Riverside Military Academy was honored to host Medal of Honor recipient CSM Robert M. Patterson on April 14 as part of the Academy’s Norman P. Blake Family Distinguished Speaker Series. CSM Patterson, USA (Retired) addressed the Corps of Cadets and guests on the topics of leadership, integrity, and courage before joining the Academy’s outgoing president, Colonel James H. Benson, during a Pass in Review of the cadet battalion. Special guests included representatives from Gainesville’s Paul E. Bolding American Legion Post 7 as well as members of Leadership Hall County 2015-16 who were on campus for team-building activities. CSM Patterson was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1969 for “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty” during the Vietnam War. He served in the U.S. Army as a fire team leader of the 3d Platoon, Troop B, during an assault against a North Vietnamese Army battalion which was entrenched in a heavily fortified position. CSM Patterson and members of his assault team moved forward under heavy enemy fire. He singlehandedly destroyed five enemy bunkers by rifle and grenade fire, inspiring his platoon to breach the enemy’s defenses. Riverside is grateful to Class of 2009 alumnus Eric Cochran for bringing two Medal of Honor recipients, CSM Patterson and 2015 distinguished speaker Corporal Hershel Woodrow Williams, to campus. Cochran wanted to bring these Medal of Honor recipients to the Academy to share their amazing stories with his alma mater’s current Corps of Cadets.

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of the Academy, It all started about four years ago when Jon Hagstrom, ’62, from Carmel, CA, visited campus, alone, on a summer Sunday afternoon. While strolling, he was intercepted by a member of RMA’s security staff, who unlocked buildings and gave him an impromptu tour. Along the way, they visited with a group of cadets, who greeted Jon respectfully and told him about life at Riverside today. Jon was impressed. He had only spent one year at Riverside, but he was convinced it had changed his life. He left Riverside that afternoon with a two-fold vision. First, he wanted to include Riverside in his estate plans, and, second, wow oh wow, what a setting RMA would be for a one-of-a-kind car event. You see, Jon is a collector car guy. He owns incredible vehicles, and he is a regular volunteer at the premier collector car events held annually in August on the Monterey Peninsula. Plus, Jon knew just the guy to bring the sights, sounds, and tactile experience of vehicles to Riverside.

The story fast forwards at this point because what transpired next was a series, a long series, of phone calls, between Jon and me, and then with his comrade, Doug Freedman of Atlanta. Doug, whose cousin attended Riverside, had spent summers on Lake Lanier and had attended his cousin’s RMA commencement. He knew the area well and immediately envisioned what Jon envisioned… and more.

The Georgia state tax credit program that benefits Riverside and other independent schools with scholarship dollars is proving to be extremely popular. In 2016, the $58 million cap was exceeded in record time on January 1. Because of this, the Department of Revenue prorated the amount among all the individuals and businesses who submitted applications on that day. This means that Riverside only received 63.4% of the amount that GOAL participants applied for. We encourage you to apply now since these precious tax credits are expected to again be exceeded on the first day of January 2017. Contact Mary Paglia, Annual Fund Coordinator, at (770) 532-6251, ext. 3362 or mlpaglia@riversidemilitary.com for step-by-step assistance.
