THE WEIRD WONDERFUL AND WHACKY
Chaffey Theatre THOR
THE Riverland took a massive step forward in regaining its pre-eminence in South Australia’s tourism industry on Tuesday night. The region’s tourism stakeholders voted almost unanimously to take control of their promotional destiny by agreeing to form an independent board to represent the region. The decision follows the redirection of South Australian Tourism Commission funds into a new marketing approach. Around 150 people attended Tuesday night’s meeting. Those in attendance were from the industry itself, as well as other sectors of the Riverland community. This board has the potential to revitalise the region’s tourism industry, which has fallen on fallow times in recent years. The agreement reached at Tuesday night’s meeting was to follow the structure proposed by the three Riverland councils. However, whether that is the best way forward is unclear, with some of the less outspoken stakeholders at the meeting quietly questioning council’s involvement in the concept. In whatever fashion the board is constructed, it has the opportunity to revitalise Riverland tourism and get the word out about how great this region truly is. We cannot just blame the economic plight of the region, or environmental factors for what has beset tourism in the Riverland. There appears to be a cultural cringe surrounding our tourism attractions which prevents us from telling everyone else about our best assets. On Tuesday night, there was a clear indication that local tourism stakeholders want to change that attitude. We are all stakeholders in the Riverland and we all need to sell our region and be part of this tourism rebirth.
