Dir: Woody Allen / USA, Paris / 2011 / 94 mins / Cert:12A Starring: Owen Wilson, Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, Carla Bruni, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Michael Sheen, Language: English Woody Allen is back on form with this light-as-a-feather fantasy about 20s bohemian Paris, which (incredibly) is already the most commercially successful of his career. It’s a funny, slight comedy whose time-travel conceit is managed effortlessly. Standing in for Allen himself Owen Wilson plays Gil, a youngish Hollywood screenwriter who is visiting Paris with his egocentric social-climbing fiancee, Inez (Rachel McAdams), and her wealthy, neo-xenophobic parents. One night, while Gil is walking the streets of Montmartre he is transported back to the 1920s and confronts the illusion that a life different from one’s own is better. €3 Coffee & Cake Deal

An outstanding line up featuring three giants of the Irish trad scene. Fiddler Martin Hayes had picked up six all-Ireland championships before the age of 19 before embarking on a musical odyssey that has brought his lyrical sound into the worlds of jazz, film, theatre and modern dance. The former Irish Echo Artist of the Year Kevin Crawford (flute, whistles, bodhrán) has collaborated with the likes of Grianan, Raise the Rafters, Joe Derrane, Natalie Merchant, Susan McKeown and Sean Tyrrell. John Doyle’s filigree finger-picking guitar style received a Grammy nomination in 2009 for his collaboration with Chicago fiddler Liz Carroll, Double Play. And did we mention Doyle’s tenor vocals and crack bouzouki and mandolin playing? ‘If someone told me about a new trio comprising Martin Hayes, Kevin Crawford, and John Doyle, I would have replied: keep dreaming. Yet that’s exactly what we have: a dream team made real’. Earle Hitchner, Irish Echo

Relationships: whose idea was that? One of you wants to get things done, the other wants to chill out in the garden. One of you wants a minute’s peace, the other wants to talk (and talk and talk). One of you likes things the way they are, the other wants a project. One of you knows that eating that apple is the wrong thing to do, but the other is going to eat it anyway. Relationships shouldn’t work, but somehow they do – so who did the groundwork? In this witty and modern adaptation of Mark Twain’s affectionate satire, Adam and Eve, the worlds first couple confront their many differences. Whether they’re creating language, inventing fire, taming nature, or discovering love and death, what they learn about each other on the way will be familiar and funny to anyone who has ever experienced a close relationship. Tempted? Don’t miss this hilarious production.

Dir: Werner Herzog / 2010 / 90 mins Werner Herzog gains exclusive access to film inside the Chauvet Cave of Southern France, capturing the oldest known pictorial creations of humankind in their astonishing natural setting. In 1994, a group of scientists discovered a cave in Southern France perfectly preserved for over 20,000 years and containing the earliest known human paintings. Knowing the cultural significance that the Chauvet Cave holds, the French government immediately cut-off all access to it, save a few archaeologists and palaeontologists. But documentary filmmaker, Werner Herzog, has been given limited access, and now we get to go inside examining beautiful artwork created by our ancient ancestors around 32,000 years ago. He asks questions to various historians and scientists about what these humans would have been like and trying to build a bridge from the past to the present. sATURdAY JANUARY 28TH

Oscar-nominee Brad Dourif (Deadwood, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Seed of Chucky) delivers a remarkable performance as he tells the aliens’ story. Herzog has combined original NASA footage with Henry Kieser’s incredible documentary images from beneath the Antarctic Ocean, as well as interviews with respected scientists, that culminate in his personal plea to save our planet.

In this visually stunning exploration, Herzog travels to the Antarctic community of McMurdo Station, the hub of the US Antarctic Program and home to eleven hundred people during the austral spring and summer (Oct-Feb). Over the course of his journey, Herzog examines human nature and Mother nature, juxtaposing breathtaking locations with the profound, surreal, and sometimes absurd experiences of the marine biologists, physicists, plumbers, and truck drivers who choose to form a society as far away from society as one can get. Whether offering a detailed study of the unique survival training regimen that newcomers to McMurdo are obligated to endure or pondering the majestic beauty of a landscape where the discovery of three new species in a single day is something worth truly celebrating, Herzog boldly offers viewers the opportunity to visit one of the most inaccessible and awe-inspiring landscapes on the planet. MARY COUGHlAN Time: price

An Irish theatrical torch-blues legend, Mary Coughlan will tell her unique story in her inimitable style through the many songs she has recorded over the last 25 years. 2010 was the 25th anniversary of Mary Coughlan’s seminal album ‘Tired and Emotional’ which was Ireland’s biggest selling album in the year of release and is now 7 times platinum. This is a unique opportunity to see her performing songs from her latest album as well as a selection of material spanning her whole career.

“Ireland has never produced a singer quite like Mary Coughlan. She emerged in 1986 seemingly from nowhere and without any preliminaries, but already with a stagecraft and vocal sophistication of a veteran, singing new songs and blues songs with one of those voices that tingle the mind with an instant recognition of something very special.” The Irish Times

Salomé will be an evening of spectacle, something quite different from the usual night out at the movies. This production brings together a screening of the 1923 silent film, Salomé with a live performance of the new score specially written for the film by Charlie Barber. The music is performed by four percussionists, playing from two giant alloy towers placed on either side of the screen. The use of the towers adds a real theatrical and dramatic twist to the evening. The ‘orchestra’ of percussion offers a rich mix of the familiar (bass drum, cymbals etc) and the more exotic, including the Sistra (originating from ancient Egypt), the Djembe (a traditional African drum) and Tibetan singing bowls. The music is driven forward by dynamic rhythms and pulsating beats. The range of instruments played means there is an incredibly rich and colourful pallet of sounds to absorb and enjoy whilst the sheer physicality demanded of the percussionists as they switch from one instrument to another intensifies the energy of the performance. Salomé is a rarely seen curiosity from the silent era of film, a visual fest – undoubtedly a bizarre one, quite unlike anything else you’re likely to see at the cinema. The film is an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s play of the same name.

BY sAMUEl BECKETT Time 8pm price 116/€114 The End is a gritty account of the last days of an old man’s life as he struggles to live despite his willingness to die. This unique performance of Samuel Beckett’s short story The End is performed by Irish actor Conor Lovett, considered by many to be the definitive Beckett performer. The End is the perfect introduction to the humour, compassion and integrity that are the hallmarks of Beckett’s work. Evicted from an institution of care he stoically fends for himself in a state somewhere between his dreams and reality. Beckett masterfully balances the tragedy with perfectly pitched comedy. Lovett and director Judy Hegarty Lovett have built a reputation for their arresting presentations of Beckett’s prose on stage and have toured all over Ireland and to over 77 cities around the world. “This is wondrous acting” Sunday Independent “Comedy, sly and biting, all the sharper for seeming to come out of hiding ... BAG lAdY

BY FRANK MCGUINNEss

Time 8pm price 116/€114 Starring Maria McDermottroe, Directed by Caroline Fitzgerald BAGLADY is a rarely performed play from one of Ireland’s leading playwrights, Frank McGuinness. It has not been seen on an Irish stage for 25 years but its story is as relevant now as when it was first written. Baglady is a touching and revealing drama on how a woman becomes alienated from life: the eponymous Baglady of the title is a gentle woman whose life has been destroyed by shocking violence. The play explores the conditions and circumstances which caused her to become alienated from society and gradually reveals the terrifying events which shaped her life. One of the most remarkable aspects of McGuinness’s play is its ability to implicate an entire society while focusing on a lone soul torn asunder by an act of familial violation. The resonances with widespread allegations of systemic child abuse within Irish society as a whole are unmistakable here. Baglady’s fraught attempts to exorcise her troubled past also holds a mirror up to the ongoing debate about how Ireland can best come to terms with its own history “McDermottroe is ultimately triumphant as she excavates the pure child from the raddled old woman” The Sunday Times. Lau combine stunning musicianship with a ground-breaking yet playful approach to traditional music that transcends the music they hold dear, creating a cutting edge sound which garners praise from far beyond the roots scene. Prepare to be wowed by the wildly inventive Martin Green on accordian keys and effects, Aidan O’Rourke’s impossibly beautiful fiddle playing, Kris Drever’s virtuoso guitar and honeyed baritone voice, not to mention some excellent on stage banter and chemistry between the band. “Quite frankly the best band in the world right now” Channel 4 “LAU are so special’ The Guardian For more information check out their website www.laumusic.co.uk

The exhibition is designed to take you on a journey into a story and out of your own. Works created by children in the ‘Take and Make a Journey’ workshop will sit alongside Nina Tanis’ work in the gallery space. Nina Tanis is an American artist living and working in Dublin. Tanis enjoys making installation work and crafting interventions that might bring people out of their routine, via manipulating space, action, or request. Her recent residency at The Guesthouse in Cork allowed her to create: Lucky Bag project and Newspaper-d reading room. She is a member of the storytelling troupe Story. ‘Create some works for this exhibtion as part of the workshop “Take and Make a Journey” (see page 13) sATURdAY FEBRUARY 18TH TO FRIdAY MARCH 23Rd

MIlEs FROM HOME BY NOEl HENsEY Time mcKennA gAllery 10Am - 5.30pm mon - fri, 10Am - 1pm sAT price free Admission Noel Hensey is the 2011 Kildare County Council Emerging Visual Artist Exhibition Bursary Award recipient which has enabled him to create this exhibition entitled ‘Miles from Home’. The exhibition is inspired by famous Kildare landmarks and is concerned with the creation of openness or spaciousness. The work can be seen as a philosophical exploration in reducing all phenomena e.g. thought, physical matter etc. into sound. The exhibition contains two elements. A sound installation entitled ‘Sound Garden’ inspired by The Japanese Rock Gardens (Karesansui). The rocks are replaced by speakers, the sounds of which conceptually represent traditional elements found in gardens such as fountains and bridges. The second, a photographic series shot on The Curragh Plains, depicts evidence of spaciousness. ‘By the perception of degrees of remoteness and of regular return of phonic stimulus…for the human being the appreciation of space is a matter of sound.’ –Roland Barthes Noel Hensey is a MA Fine Art graduate from Chelsea College, London. His group exhibitions include: Q-Art London Presents II, APT Gallery, London, 2010 and Minor Domestic Interventions, 38b Peckham Rye, London, 2011. This year he was selected for Bloomeberg New Contemporaries, Institute of Contemporary Arts, London. For further information see: www.noelhensey.com
