Our friends Theatre Lovett drop anchor at Riverbank Arts Centre again this summer and they won’t have too long to get comfortable before we send them off with their packed lunches on a whistle stop tour of libraries all around the county in June. Not only will they be bringing their very special brand of theatrical trickery far and wide, but they will also be offering unique opportunities in professional training for both actors and teachers in April. There are also BIG plans afoot for a World Premier in September, which Riverbank and Theatre Lovett are working on together, but…we might just keep you in suspense about that a little longer. Trust us, it’s worth waiting for!

FOIL ARMS & HOG BEGORRAH time: 8pm tickets: €15/€12

sat 2nd apr

Dubbed by the critics as a ‘powerhouse of sketch comedy’, Foil Arms and Hog have recently completed a World tour, have over 4 million hits on Youtube, are starring on Jason Byrne’s upcoming TV3 show ‘Snaptastic’ and have sold out six years running at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In addition the lads recently won a comedy award at the Adelaide Fringe festival and are working on a sitcom for BBC3. In this show you’ll find out what happens at an Irish Intervention for a boy who ‘doesn’t drink’, you’ll see the self indulgent ‘La Bullshat’ theatre group, and you’ll meet Christian Rockers ‘God Vibrations’. Fantastically bizarre and deliriously funny, it’s sketch comedy at its best.

The Ark Presents:

Far away from me by Amy Conroy

april

Inspired by The Princess & The Pea

time: 2pm tickets: €8/€28 (family)

wed tue 7th & 8th apr apr

Kevin is a little prince…at least that’s what his mum tells him. Kevin likes the idea of this, of being a prince on a horse, a beautiful brown horse with a white splotch down his nose and galloping across the kingdom. His kingdom. From his bedroom behind the eighth door, on the eighth floor of a tall building (one of eight in a row), Kevin can go. And he wants to go. Far away from here. So his towering imagination takes him on some high-flying adventures. But there’s a storm coming and he needs to decide what’s real and what’s not real as his fast paced fantasies land with a spectacular bump right there on his bed. Far Away from Me is a new theatre show written and directed by Amy Conroy, inspired by The Princess and the Pea and infused with the wild energy of aerial performance, dance music and great storytelling.

Riverbank Family CINEMA Presents:

james & the giant peach time: 2pm tickets: €3

sun 19th apr

Dir: Henry Selick | UK/USA | 1996 | 79 mins | Cert U Featuring the voices of Steven Culp, Richard Dreyfuss, Joanna Lumley, Miriam Margolyes, Susan Sarandon, Paul Terry

Made by the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, this has an enchanting, at times ghoulish, appeal. An adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic story, Selick’s film most beautifully captures the book’s free-floating, fantastic sense of adventure and wonder. Forced into a life of drudgery by his evil aunts Sponge and Spiker (Margolyes and Lumley), orphan James dreams of escape to New York. An old man (Postlethwaite) appears and gives the boy a jigging handful of fluorescent, magical crocodile tongues. A dead peach tree bears a gigantic fruit, and diving Alice-like into its core, James enters a world of strange invertebrates. As his wishes take flight, so does the peach, putting to sea and soaring up in the air, hauled majestically by a flock of tethered sea-gulls. The songs and music have the inimitable signature of Randy Newman.

“Grips from start to finish … a stirring civil rights film that is both cogent and emotionally charged.” – Hollywood Reporter This riveting documentary follows the historic case to overturn California’s ban on same-sex marriage; a journey that took five years of setbacks and victories, ending up at the Supreme Court in Washington. Told from the perspective of the two couples selected as plaintiffs, and from that of their legal team – the previously combative “Odd Couple” pair of US Solicitor General under George W Bush, Republican Ted Olson, and his opposing counsel in the Supreme Court Bush v. Gore trial, Democrat David Boies – The Case Against 8 won the Best Director, US Documentary prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival for its rare, behind-the-scenes insight into a major legal case, as well as the intense pressure the plaintiffs endured being the face of gay marriage. - Melbourne International Film Festival 2014

Dir: Ana DuVernay | USA | 2014 | 128 mins | Cert: 12A Starring: David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo, Tom Wilkinson, Oprah Winfrey, Tim Roth | Language: English David Oyelowo excels as Martin Luther King in this brilliant account of a key moment in the US civil rights struggle. 1965 - the small town of Selma, Alabama, has become the unlikely flashpoint for the struggle for racial equality. Astute strategist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Martin Luther King Jr (David Oyelowo) knows that the most effective use of non-violence is to provoke a violent response. He selects Selma for a protest march because of its racist governor George Wallace (Tim Roth) and the brutality of its police force. Ava DuVernay’s insightful, profoundly moving drama captures the political chicanery surrounding this turning point for the civil rights movement. It also works superbly on a smaller, human scale as a portrait of a flawed man. Oscar Winner 2015 for Best Score Oscar Nominee 2015 for Best Motion Picture

Meet Pakie. An orphan, a storyteller, an adventurer, a survivor. He may not be the sharpest sandwich in the toolbox, but Pakie knows a thing or two about the history of his native town – from the vicious Vikings, to the not-so-Christian Brothers. Pakie’s a laugh a minute, but Pakie’s got secrets. Secrets the God fearing people of Oggle may not be ready to hear. Written and performed by Peter Gowen (Charlie, Love/ Hate, The Butcher Boy), and directed by Donal Gallagher (Love All, Bedbound), this is a hilarious and heartbreaking story of small towns and even smaller minds. Originally premiered in Youghal in April of 2013, followed by transfer to Cork’s Everyman Theatre. The production ran for just 7 nights and Peter Gowen’s performance received standing ovations every night. tThe play was selected among the Irish Examiner Critics Choice Highlights of the year 2013, and has just been published by Bloomsbury in the UK.

Some of them are fantasy creatures, of the kind that inhabit children’s books and the childhood imagination. The kind that we carry with us in memory through to our adult lives - the creature under the bed, the fairy, the toys that come alive at night, the dragons and the unicorns. They are also the beloved toys that we carried around as children until they eventually fell apart or were discarded, lost, kept or passed on to our own children. They are the fairy tale myth creatures so strongly believed in once, the dragons and the mermaids; the imagined fantasy creatures of childhood.

Dir: David Zellner, Nathan Zellner | USA, Japan | 2014 | 105 mins Cert: PG | Language: English, Japanese | Starring: Rinko Kikuchi, Nobuyuki Katsube, Shirley Venard, David Zellner, Nathan Zellner As any Coen Brothers fan can attest, the ending of the 1996 masterpiece Fargo is devilishly enigmatic, with the stolen money lost forever in the endless snows of the Northern Plains. To some, it’s a sardonic ending; to others, it’s the start of an adventure. One lonely woman on the other side of the world becomes convinced that the story is real and that the buried loot is still there for the taking. Based on an urban legend about the Coen Brothers film, Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter, follows the obsessive quest of Kumiko, a shy Tokyo office worker who tires of running demeaning errands for her boss and enduring her mother’s nags about finding a man.

Wickedly hilarious and delightfully deranged, Wild Tales is a subversive satire that doubles as a uniformly entertaining anthology film. Inequality, injustice and the demands of the world we live in cause stress and depression for many people. Some of them, however, explode. This is a movie about those people. Vulnerable in the face of a reality that shifts and suddenly turns unpredictable, the characters of Wild Tales cross the thin line that divides civilization and barbarism. A lover’s betrayal, a return to the repressed past and the violence woven into everyday encounters drive the characters to madness as they cede to the undeniable pleasure of losing control. Chef tells the gripping story of how one woman went from being a haute-cuisine head-chef to a convicted inmate running a prison kitchen. Leading us through her world of mouth-watering dishes and heart-breaking memories, Chef questions our attitudes to food, prisoners, violence, love and hope. Inspired by an interview Mahfouz conducted with Ollie Dabbous, Chef studies food as the ultimate art form taking stimulus from Dabbous’ obsession with simplicity and making something the best it can be. As the Michelin-star chef of the moment says, ‘language is a bit like a dish, you break it down into little parts and it suddenly becomes easier’. Chef is an explosively engaging character, leading us through her triumphs and tragedies with words as sharp as her knife: ‘The night is packed away into a black bin bag, tagged with a let’s not talk of that again, tomorrow will be better and maybe we should just get pizza’. 33
