Lesley Grainger is a wife, mom and designer. Her passion to create started as a child and she dreamed of being an artist from her early childhood memories. Lesley is originally from England were she studied art and received a Bachelor Honors Degree in Illustration and Design. She moved to California in 1999 with her husband and daughter. Her designs are inspired by her children, color and nature, especially the

The Patterns The goal for Olive Ann Designs is for all of the love and effort that sewers put into making clothes to be fruitful so we focus on fun, practical and easy to fit designs. We like modern, playful clothes that work for going to church, school, the playground or a party, and don’t take hours and hours to make. We love to blend practicality with style.
The Designer Do you remember the troll dolls with crazy colorful hair? Ann Blair began her design career at age eight by making clothes out of felt and sequins for her collection of troll dolls. That was fun but the pleasure of designing for her granddaughters is what inspired her line of children’s clothing. Growing up in California and Arkansas, she settled in the beautiful and sometimes soggy, Portland, Oregon. After a career as a scientist, Ann learned the ropes in the pattern making business from her sister Barbara Brunson, the owner and designer of Vanilla House Designs. With the help of her entire family, Ann designed her first dress “To Tie For” which continues to be one of the top sellers. The covers of the patterns mostly feature Ann’s granddaughters and when shown as a collection, illustrate how quickly kids grow up! Of course the G-kids are her inspiration but a very happy childhood has also been a source of design ideas. For example, “Penelope” is a dress that reflects the memory of a dress she wore when she was four –see photos. The Team Olive Ann Designs has steadily developed since its beginning in 2009 and Ann has appreciated her background in business to manage all of the growth. Two of Ann’s daughters, Mandy and Amber, also live in Portland and support the business. Not only do they love featuring their children on the pattern covers, they are also a part of every stage of the design process from contributing design ideas, choosing fabric, to pattern cover design and production. It’s a family affair during the many photo shoots throughout the year and there are thousands of photos to prove it! Ann’s husband, Aaron, is another invaluable contributor and has been known to actually suggest stopping in at fabric stores while vacationing (husband award candidate)! To keep expenses to a minimum, women would find quilting materials from many different sources such as sewing scraps, out-grown clothing and feed sacks. 19th Century Shirtings Shirtings are simple small patterns on a white or off white ground. These basic prints are used in quilting as an accent or neutral piece when partnered with darker prints. You will find shirtings in almost all antique quilts and reproduction quilting projects. BY

During the 19th Century patchworking became popular because it was practical. Clothing and other inexpensive material were available and readily recycled into quilts. The original shirtings used in quilting were taken from men’s shirts and later taken from women’s blouses and dresses.
