Welcome to 2023!
As the new Foundation Board Chair, I’m excited about all this year has in store, including:
Events
New! Join us for Pins for a Purpose at Bowlero in Eden Prairie on Friday, April 21. There are two time frames to choose from, including one that is family friendly.
New in Le Sueur! Tastes, Tunes & Taps on Friday, April 28. Eat, drink and sing along to dueling pianos, Duelly Noted. All proceeds benefit the Ridgeview Le Sueur Campus.
Golf & Taste Celebration is quickly approaching: Yes, spring is just around the corner, and so is registration for our annual golf tournament. This year, we’re also celebrating Ridgeview’s 60th anniversary at the event. Stay tuned for more details.
Cause for the Community campaign
In year one, our multi-year fundraising campaign met our goal of funding telemetry and clinical education. We have so much more to do together in 2023. Keep watching for updates on our next fundraising goal.
I personally have been involved with Ridgeview Foundation for years. As a local business owner and community member, my family and I know firsthand the importance of having quality health care close to home. I’m so honored to lead Ridgeview Foundation and ensure we all have the best care close to home. Whether you are a Corporate Partner, donate as an individual, contribute in-kind items or volunteer at events, it takes all of us to be successful. Thank you for your continued support of Ridgeview Foundation.

PLANNED GIVING
What to Know About This Year’s New Laws
A new year has brought more than just resolutions. It’s brought new laws and other changes that may affect your giving decisions. And with any economic change, you may be looking at your finances and wondering how you will be impacted.
The new laws include retirement changes, known collectively as “Secure 2.0,” that may affect your saving and your giving. They may even make it easier for you to make a difference at organizations you care about.
Some important things Secure 2.0 does that involve charitable giving:
1. Increases the required minimum distribution (RMD) age
Secure 2.0 increases the age retirees must begin taking taxable withdrawals to 73 in 2023 and 75 by 2033, up from the previous 72. It does not, however, increase the age an IRA owner can make a qualified charitable distribution. That age remains at 70½.
How does this affect me? Simply put, the extension of the RMD age gives you more time to save. You will enjoy additional tax-free growth. It also can be significant if you do not want to begin withdrawing retirement funds during an unsettled economic climate, giving you more time for your stock portfolio to recover.
2. Adjusts for inflation the $100,000 annual limit on direct gifts to qualified charities from your IRA
Are you 70½ or older? If so, you may know about a popular gift option that allows you to make a gift directly from your
IRA to a qualified charity without paying income taxes on the distribution. Historically, the amount you could give was capped at $100,000 per year. This figure will now be adjusted annually for inflation beginning in 2024.
How does this affect me? This allows you to not only increase your giving but also ensure your giving keeps pace with inflation. And you can make an impact – and see that impact – now rather than after your lifetime.
3. Allows for a distribution from your IRA to fund a life-income gift
If you are 70½ or older, you can make a one-time election for a qualified charitable distribution of up to $50,000 (without being taxed) from your IRA to fund a life-income gift such as a charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder unitrust or charitable remainder annuity trust.
How does this affect me? These types of life-income gifts allow you to make a gift to a qualified charitable organization and receive lifetime payments to boost your retirement income, or provide a lifetime payment for you or your spouse.
Let’s Talk!
We can help answer additional questions about how the new retirement laws affect your charitable giving. Contact Kelly Mulleady, CFRE, at 952-777-5099 or kelly.mulleady@ridgeviewmedical.org to discuss your legacy.
Supporting its Patients and Community With Care and Philanthropy: Why OBGYN West supports Ridgeview Foundation
More than 40,000 patients a year trust the team at OBGYN West that includes 10 physicians, two physician assistants and one nurse practitioner at its Waconia, Chaska, Eden Prairie and Minnetonka locations. They provide a full spectrum of services at any stage of a woman’s life, including well women visits, mammography services, contraception, preconception counseling and infertility care, pregnancy, OB visits, post-partum, perimenopause and menopause.
OBGYN West is with their patients every step of the way.
Caring for Their Own
The team at OBGYN West doesn’t just see patients. Instead, it cares for mothers, daughters, sisters, neighbors and friends.
“The patients who are constantly telling their friends and family to come here, that speaks for itself, and we’re all proud of that,” said Ashley Andersen, MD. “When I’m out in the community, whether it’s with women at a neighborhood party or my son’s daycare, I’m always hearing from patients who love the care they’ve gotten here.”
The Secret Sauce
OBGYN West’s secret sauce lies in the internal culture that has been carefully cultivated over the years.
“We’re a family,” said Chris Gooder, OBGYN West Executive Director. “What makes this place special is not just the physicians, but the staff. We have people who enjoy coming into work, they enjoy seeing their coworkers, they enjoy taking care of their patients.”
“It’s all about the relationship,” said Dr. Andersen. “I have some patients who I’ve seen through that entire time. I’ve done surgery on them. I’ve delivered their babies. I get Christmas cards from their families.”
The team at OBGYN West performs 30-40 percent of its deliveries at Ridgeview. Therefore, its relationship is strengthened through philanthropic support of Ridgeview Foundation.
It’s important to give back to the community to push health care forward in the western suburbs and advance the surgical technology in labor and delivery.
– Dr. Matt Weinrich, OBGYN West partner
Giving Back
“Nine years ago, we made a commitment to get more involved in our communities,” said Gooder. “There’s a direct benefit to working with Ridgeview. Through our philanthropic work with the them, we have been able to raise money for Ridgeview initiatives that benefit the hospital, community and our patients. Working with the Ridgeview Foundation helps improve services, quality and patient care which makes Ridgeview a great place to receive care of any type.”
“It’s important to give back to the community to push health care forward in the western suburbs and advance the surgical technology in labor and delivery,” said Matt Weinrich, MD, OBGYN West partner whose been practicing for 20 years. “We need to stay competitive and that requires philanthropy.”
OBGYN West has been a member of the Ridgeview Foundation Corporate Partner program since 2013. Its team is regularly seen on the golf course for the annual Golf & Taste Celebration and at Under the Harvest Moon.
“By investing in Ridgeview Foundation, it helps to grow and support not only Ridgeview, but gives back to us and our patients. And, that benefits us all,” said Dr. Andersen. “It always feels good to give back to a worthy cause. And to give back to something you believe in really benefits the community. It’s something we are able to do and we feel really good about it.”
“I love my job,” said Dr. Weinrich. “It’s bringing a baby into the world. It’s amazing and there’s not a better job in medicine.”
OBGYN West Grateful Patient
In August 2021, Jackie and Derek Schulze of Waconia learned they were pregnant. Results from a routine ultrasound provided even more surprise.
“There’s two,” Jackie remembers telling Derek.
“Two what?” asked Derek.
“Two babies!” said Jackie.
Because Jackie and Derek were expecting twins, they had more appointments and more ultrasounds than during a regular pregnancy. In the third trimester, Jackie had preeclampsia, which is a complication of pregnancy. One month before her scheduled cesarean section, she was sent to Ridgeview to deliver the twins.
“That first night, we didn’t know if the twins would be able to stay at Ridgeview,” said Jackie. “It was a relief to learn they could stay here.” Thankfully, Ridgeview’s Level III NICU was well equipped to take care of the twins after they were born earlier than expected.
