SUMMERTIME BLUES FESTIVAL AUGÂ 22-26 MAFFEO SUTTON

Summertime Blues Festival If you’ve never been to the Summertime Blues Festival in Nanaimo, this should be the year to break your streak. This year’s festival, put on by the Nanaimo Blues Society, features International, National and regional Blues performers. Mark your calendars for the weekend of August 23nd-August 25th so you don’t miss such acts as Walter Trout, Eric Gales, Ana Popovic, Tom Lavin’s Legendary Powder Blues Band, The Proven Ones, Sue Foley and many, many more. A total of 22 acts over three days at Maffeo Sutton Park plus the After Fest Jams at The Queens Hotel. The headliners for the Festival are Ana Popovic on Friday, Walter Trout on Saturday and Eric Gales on Sunday. Ana Popovic is originally from Serbia, moved to Amsterdam to further her musical education and moved to Memphis to get immersed in the Blues and it’s history. She’s a fine singer and a phenomenal guitarist with that Funky Memphis sound. By the way, Friday will be Women’s Day at the Festival. All eight acts on Friday will feature women! You won’t find that at other Blues Festivals. Walter Trout was the recipient of a liver transplant in the not too distant past and is mak-

ing the most of his new lease on life. Walter is back to being one of the finest guitarists in the Blues for the last few decades. Walter’s singing is first rate and his band is tighter than a bullfighter’s pants. Eric Gales has been on the Blues and Rock scene for years. He pushes the boundaries of Blues but always in a respectful and mind-blowing way. His shows are explosive and not to be missed. The entire line up and tickets for 2019 Summertime Blues are on the website, www.nanaimobluesfestival.com. The 2019 Summertime Blues Festival will once again be held in beautiful Maffeo Sutton Park, on the waterfront in downtown Nanaimo. The venue is literally a stone’s throw from the ocean. If you are staying the night or all weekend there are numerous hotels close to the venue and many camping options on the outskirts of town. Three-day and single day passes are available. For more info about the Festival and to purchase tickets please go to www. nanaimobluesfestival.com. You will find lots of info about what to bring, links to hotels, camping and everything connected with the festival.

Fitness tip The Heartbeat of Summer

And on it goes. Yet we all know that a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of numerous diseases and disorders which decrease life expectancy. So what to do? Getting off the couch is a lot easier when we lose the ‘all or nothing’ mentality when it comes to exercise: after all, a little is a LOT better than none. And movement of any kind is good for you, whether it’s mowing the lawn, cleaning your home, rearranging your furniture or playing with your kids. Keep it fun and you’re more likely to do it again! Pet Tips

Know Your Stuff! Pet owners interested in pursuing a raw food diet (either whole or in part) for their furry friends have plenty of options: there are a multitude of recipes online to get you started, or you can take advantage of the growing number of raw dog food suppliers that offer affordable frozen, freeze-dried and dehydrated options. No one doubts that preparing good food for our families (Fido included) is an act of love. But doing it from scratch all the time can be very time consuming. It’s nice to know there

are options. And it’s nice to know that when you grab for the commercially-available raw dog food options, the right balance of proteins and fibre, vitamins and minerals are present to promote optimal health. Whether you feed raw for short periods of time to treat a particular ailment, intersperse it with a kibble-based diet or dedicate yourself to it full-time, be sure to do it only after consulting with your veterinarian and doing plenty of research. Your best friend deserves it!

KOOL TOYS for “KIDS” from 1 to 92 August is here and the long days of summer are starting to get shorter. As many people are either just getting back from holidays, or others are preparing to leave for theirs, if you are travelling with children we have items in store to help ward off “I’m bored” or “Are we there yet?” There are plenty to choose from depending on the age of the child. Water Wow’s are safe, no mess water colouring books for children 3-5, they have a small bottle with a brush at one end that you fill with water and the child can “colour” the page. Once the pages dry you can do it over and over until the book is worn out! For older children we have assorted colouring books and wax or pencil crayons for hours of fun. We also carry assorted maze and dot to dot books. If you look in our travel section you will find many different games to help time pass quickly. If you want your child to brush up on their education while traveling we offer many types of books to help them. Our Summer Bridge and Summer Smart books will help children transition from their last grade to the next with ease. As summer wears down the evenings will start to get cooler, what a perfect time to sit down with a family puzzle or a family game that you can all play. For a young child we have story books you can read to them, even some from local authors. Perhaps a soft stuffed animal they can cuddle while you read?

What about a puppet for them to create their own story? The possibilities are endless! Special memories are always fun to make and cherish. A child is only a child for a short time and in the blink of your eyes they are soon grown. You will still make memories with them, but they will be different than when they were little and wanting to know everything about the world.

Look for ways to diffuse the light of your office space: lampshades soften and scatter otherwise harsh light, while an upward-shining floor lamp bounces the light off of walls and ceiling • make use of natural light as much as possible, especially in a small areas: it makes a space feel bigger. If privacy is a concern, consider affixing frosted or fogged window film • add greenery: a lovely plant or two helps people feel more relaxed and calm, it cleans the air, and it adds a dash of colour and texture • fill your workspace with vibrant art or items that are meaningful to you • keep the furniture simple and clean. A comfortable chair is a must

What is Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock? The short answer is it’s a two-week, 1,000-kilometre bike ride for a team of police officers who raise money to fight childhood cancer. But it’s so much more than that. It’s the biggest community event on Vancouver Island — unifying every community from Victoria to Port Alice as we rally together to support children who are battling cancer.

By 1997, the Cops for Cancer head shaves had reached Vancouver Island. In Greater Victoria, the local police weren’t satisfied with breaking out the razors, though; they wanted to try something bigger. A brainstorming session between the cops and the Canadian Cancer Society resulted in the suggestion of a bike ride the length of the Island.

It’s almost impossible to articulate the way in which Vancouver Island residents have made the Tour de Rock one of the most successful and longest-running fundraisers in the province. It’s Vancouver Islanders — from schoolchildren and their parents to volunteers and the generous business community — who are really the backbone of the Tour de Rock. Without you, we would just be a group of people riding bikes

At the time it seemed like a crazy idea. But as the goal was to raise money for children battling cancer, it was decided that the bike ride would be worth trying.

So where did the idea of a bike ride down Vancouver Island come from? The story goes back to 1994 and to Alberta. It was there that an Edmonton police officer named Gary Goulet befriended a young boy with cancer. Chemotherapy had robbed the boy of his hair and he was being ridiculed by other kids for it. Goulet, who already had a shaved head, wanted to show the boy that it was OK to be bald, and offered to pose for a photo with him in front of a police cruiser. Other cops joined in. In fact, seven shaved their heads for the occasion. That was the start of Cops for Cancer.

The first ride in 1998 attracted a group of 16 police officers who took up the cause. The Canadian Cancer Society enlisted the help of incredible community sponsors, including what it is now named Coast Capital Savings. In its first year, Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock raised $325,000. Since then the amount has grown and grown. To date, Tour de Rock has raised more than $25 million for pediatric cancer research and support programs, and has spawned three other similar Cops for Cancer rides elsewhere in B.C. The 2019 team will add to that fundraising total. So will the people of Vancouver Island, who for the last 22 years have taken it upon themselves to lead the fight against childhood cancer. Paying For Post-Secondary Education Without Derailing Your Own Plan With a son heading to VIU this Fall, the reality of post-secondary education expenses is a hot topic in our home. Thankfully, a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) can help, without compromising your own financial plan. The RESP is a tax-deferred savings plan designed to allow you to save for a beneficiary’s post-secondary education. For many, the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) is the most attractive feature of the RESP whereby the government pays a CESG of 20% on the first $2,500 of annual contributions with possible additional grants depending on circumstances. Furthermore, as funds are withdrawn for education expenses they are typically taxed to the beneficiary. Clearly, this can be a powerful tool in your overall Plan.
