Note to our readers Thank you Nanaimo! First things first…thank you for reading What’s On Digest Nanaimo! What’s On is truly a passion for all of us who are fortunate enough to be a part of this publication. Since 2006 in communities across Vancouver Island What’s On Digest has been providing a link to local events, shopping, places to go and people to see. In 2012 Rideout Communications brought What’s On Digest to Nanaimo filling a niche catering both to active people looking for things to do and offering local businesses a great way to promote themselves. You, the reader, and the active member of this great community, are truly the most important element in this entire endeavour. It’s the readers like you who participate, get engaged and build that thing called “community.” Indeed it’s the spirit of community that underpins What’s On Digest and gives life to the city of Nanaimo. Goodness knows it’s not the elected officials…well some of them maybe. It’s you, the reader, who support your local shops and appreciate the effort that local proprietors and event organizers undertake to earn your time, attention and your business. The members of this city, the citizens who make up our very eclectic, and sometimes eccentric, population, are our raison d’être. We hope you enjoy what we have put together for you this month and we thank you again for your continued support and good favour. If you have an event or activity you’d like people to know about please submit it to www.whatsondigest. com for publication Online and in print. Until then...you keep throwing great events Nanaimo and we’ll keep telling you “What’s On.” Simon Rideout, Editor.

Interior Decorating Trends for 2017

Autumn is often synonymous with change: the leaves change colour, the fall winds blow in a new season, school starts up and people head inside. With the ‘indoor season’ looming, it might be helpful to take a look at what’s trending in interior design this fall. • Earthy materials like wood, clay, metal with worn finishes, and woven textures are all ‘big’ this season, as is punctuating your decor with quality vintage items and pretty baskets • Green continues to be a popular accent colour this fall, whether it be bright like lime or dark like forest in hue. Paint a wall, grab some cushions, throw down an area rug: if it’s green in colour you’ll enjoy the sense of revitalization and renewal it brings! • Sophisticated pastels like sage and dusty blue, blush pink, and gray are trendy colors this year. So too are warm browns and tartans • Oversized bland furniture sets are out, whereas artisan-crafted pieces you can mix-and-match are in

• Textured items add tactile coziness to any room: big this year are velvet or corduroy-covered chairs and cushions • As the tiny home movement continues, appliances and rooms that fold up are all the rage. The old convention of rooms having a single function is dying out as designers create usable, multifunctional spaces. Fold down wall beds, retractable offices and multipurpose furniture pieces are becoming popular • As our lives become increasingly fastpaced and wired-in, relaxing, tech-free ‘retreats’ within the home are all the more important: a comfy chair in a corner with a throw becomes a reading nook: a quilt-covered bed surrounded with canopies or lace curtains becomes a hide-away

• ‘Relaxed maximalism’ (read comfortable AND functional) and utilitarian materials such as plywood, canvas and reclaimed army fabric (for upholstery) are ‘hot’ this chilly season. So too is rounded furniture, terracotta floors and subway tile walls Design trends come and go, but it can be fun to let them inform and inspire your own sense of style. If you can design a space that makes you happy, whatever that looks like, then you have all that you need already.

Iconic Canadian Artist

Lawren Harris

Exhibition in Nanaimo

Lawren Harris Mount Thule, Bylot Island, 1930 oil on paperboard Collection of the Vancouver Art Gallery, The Parnell Bequest

Works by a leader in Canadian landscape painting, Lawren Stewart Harris (1885-1970), will be on view at the Nanaimo Museum from September 30-November 30. The travelling exhibition Lawren Harris: Canadian Visionary is on loan from the Vancouver Art Gallery and provides insight into the artistic evolution of the Group of Seven founding member. Lawren Harris is among the most significant figures in Canadian art history. He saw the country’s artistic and cultural potential and created works that have helped to define the very identity of Canada, not just Canadian art. A driving force in the development of modernist painting in Canada, Harris, like most of his colleagues in the Group of Seven, created his landscape paintings in the studio working from images made on sketching trips he took across the country. Examples of these sketches are featured in the exhibition. Lawren Harris: Canadian Visionary presents select key works from the Vancouver Art Gallery’s permanent collection that follow Harris’ artistic evolution from the early 1900s to the early 1960s, including the groundbreaking Group of Seven period when his work transformed the language of Canadian landscape.

The works in the exhibition include images on paper, oil sketches and paintings. A partnership between the Nanaimo Art Gallery and the Nanaimo Museum brings Lawren Harris: Canadian Visionary to Nanaimo. “We are thrilled that works by such a significant Canadian artist will be on public exhibit in our community,” says Debbie Trueman, General Manager at the Nanaimo Museum. “This exhibit is only possible in our community because of a strong working relationship between the Nanaimo Museum and the Nanaimo Art Gallery.” The Nanaimo Museum is located in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre and is open Monday-Saturday from 10-5. For more information please contact 250 753-1821 or visit www.nanaimomuseum.ca. Lawren Harris: Canadian Visionary is organized and circulated by the Vancouver Art Gallery with the generous support of the Killy Foundation and is curated by Ian M. Thom, Senior Curator-Historical, Vancouver Art Gallery. The Nanaimo Hospitality Association and the Coast Bastion Hotel provided local support for hosting the exhibition.

Get Your Car Kit Ready Now The days are getting shorter, daytime temperatures are fluctuating widely, wet roads, fog, snow and ice are becoming more commonplace, and many animals are on the move. What is there NOT to worry about when driving on BC roads in October? First line of defence? Winterize your vehicle by having a qualified service centre tune up the motor and check items such as anti-freeze, the battery, wiper blades and tread on tires. Additionally, always check the weather forecast before heading out as well as current road conditions on the Ministry of Transportation website. But what if, despite your best efforts, you end up in a ditch or stranded roadside? Having a car safety kit packed and at the ready can make the difference between a comfortable wait for assistance or a truly miserable experience. Here are a few items to consider having on hand before hitting the road…. • A candle and matches. The warmth put out by a single candle - not to mention the welcoming light! - can

keep your car surprisingly comfortable on a cold night • A blanket • Bottled water and non-perishable high-energy food like granola bars, raisins and peanut butter • Maps, a shovel and flares • A snowbrush and ice scraper • A bag of sand/cat litter • A flashlight with extra batteries Slowing down and driving with caution can prevent many roadside emergencies, but it’s never a bad idea to be prepared. With careful driving and a bit of luck, your emergency car kit will never have to be used! Be safe.

PET TIP The Lazy Dog I wanted to tell you a story about a lazy dog. She’s a Labrador that lives at my house, she came to us one day as a rescue. Her whole life she’s been a rocket machine. Jumping higher then our porch door to get our attention to come inside, running for miles with my husband barely panting. There came a day as it always does, that she suddenly started to get old. For Stella, that came as a slow putting on of weight, and panting loudly after some of

Written by Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital

her runs. After one of those runs, she had to be carried down Mount Benson on my husband’s shoulders. She had to stop the long runs after that. Not running all the time, she lost some of her sleekness, and even got a bit chubby on the extra treats she got when her sister got to go running and she had to stay home with her mama on the couch. She started to age and stopped playing with her sister. Easy to attribute that to jealousy, weight gain, and well…she’s just getting older. Finally, she came in to get her check up in July and we ran her yearly bloodwork. Nothing big showed up, but her thyroid was a little low this year, and it had been a little low last year, so we started her on medication. That was July. Within a week, she picked up her ball and began tossing it around. After about a month, she started sneaking up onto the bed for snuggles at night…she hasn’t done that in years. Last week she even started tearing around the back yard with her sisters, trying to get them to play. My girl is back. She’s no longer “just an old lab” and she’s loosing that extra weight. It reminded me of something my mentor said to me when I first graduated, years ago now, but still very relevant. “Old age isn’t a disease. There are diseases that come more commonly in old age, but never attribute changes in a patient to old age.” As for Stella, she is older, but that’s not why she wasn’t feeling well. She needed her thyroid disease treated, and treating her problem is what brought back my little black lab.

Style Tips by KC’s Boutique

At our Boutique, we have ladies of all body types, shapes, sizes and age demographics. We hear quite often the comment” I can’t wear stripes going this way(horizontal)…

JEAN FITTING CLINIC

In every designer’s collections there seems to be a top with Horizontal stripes available to use as a dominant piece. Let’s examine the truth about STRIPES… An unbroken area looks narrower than an equal area divided by a horizontal line. but not all horizontals are created the same. Horizontal detail catches your attention so you can use them certainly to make an area look larger. This idea is useful if we have a pear shaped body .. Large hips and bottoms...small on top. Use strong contrasting colours, wide bold rugby stripes to balance your body shape. These big bold stripes will make you look the same size top and bottom and a wonderful curvy body shape will be balanced.... BUT… BIG… BUT… .a series of narrow evenly spaced horizontal lines can actually draw the eye in an upward direction like climbing a ladder. thus making a woman look taller and yes much slimmer… (often seen in the nautical blue and white striped tops)

or low on the body can SLENDERIZE the overall look. The longer the eye moves up and down before the eye meets the horizontal, the taller and slimmer the figure will look. Narrower or variegated stripes can actually lead the eye vertically…thus slenderizing.

This isn’t always accurate. Narrow horizontal lines and stripes with very little color contrast have the same effect as a solid colour: no horizontal direction at all. Horizontals placed high

Our collections providing a striped top will make a slenderizing fashion statement under jackets and vests or cardigans...Try one on and see for yourself…

Silver Wave No 55 • Lisa Danesin 2016 3rd place winner

Art lovers should mark their calendar for the annual Nanaimo Fine Art Show to be held November 4th and 5th at the Conference Centre. Many of Canada’s finest painters are members of the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA). The FCA was founded in 1941 by a group of Canadian artists, including the Group of Seven’s Lawren Harris. Last year, the Nanaimo Chapter premiered the Nanaimo Fine Art show, providing a juried showcase of the best of the best from members across Vancouver Island. We greeted more than 500 visitors during last years show. It is a wonderful opportunity to share an art experience with your family and friends. Show chair Claudia Lohmann is excited to see the show become an annual for the Nanaimo community. This year’s show is open to FCA members from the Nanaimo, Victoria, and Arrowsmith Chapters. Saturday, November 4th, there will be a silent auction during the day and from 9:00am – 7:30pm, and an opportunity to meet the artists from 7:00pm-9:00pm. Come by to see some great original art, pick up an art card and cast your vote for the People’s Choice Award. Following the show, the winner will be posted on the chapter website www.nanaimofca.com.

MCNAB’S CORN MAZE (MCM) & Produce Farm, is a family operated business, that has been in operation since 2002. We provide “Family Fun in the Country”, along with sustainably grown, fresh vegetables, in season at our roadside stand. We have a 7-acre corn maze with hayrides, an extensive pumpkin patch, farm animals and firepits for your enjoyment. Our location is ideal for birthday parties, company parties and client appreciation events. This year the central part of the maze features, the Canada 150 logo. The area around it has been filled with trails, resembling the most famous trails in Canada. As you wander amongst the corn stalks, some as tall as 10 feet, you can try to guess what trail you are on. In the maze there are 4 stations for you to locate and match to a punch card. Not everyone will be able to locate the

stations so compete among your group for bragging rights! This year there is an area set aside for children, featuring the same, but shorter, stations for the smaller ones to find. We like to support the local community, which has been so good to us over the years, by allowing schools to hold fundraisers on the weekends, to raise funds for various projects. At MCM, we also support the message put out by www.5210.ca for healthy living and healthy eating. Our fresh vegetables are available, in season, from the roadside stand, 24/7. Our produce can also be purchased at 4 local Farmer’s Markets. Stop by to purchase some fresh vegetables or to simply get a little ‘lost’ in our maze!

Your Computer Guy

Article by Steve Duckett

CONDENSATION As summer closes and we get into the fall and winter seasons the temperatures will be dropping significantly. For those of you that leave your laptops in you vehicles, or perhaps in the trunk overnight, you need to make sure that when you bring your laptop inside you allow it to acclimate before turning it on. The temperate of the laptop needs to be the same temperature as the ambient air. Why you ask? Well inside your laptop are many metal parts and as we all know when metal goes from a cold climate to a warm one the metal sweats. Water and electronics do not mix and if a drop of water gets onto an important piece of electronics that could mean the end of your laptop. The same goes for all my clients that pick up or drop off their tower computers to Bitrate Computers. I always wait until they are acclimated before turning them on as some towers have been in the client’s car overnight. When you bring the tower home and they have been in the car all day in the cold please wait until they warm up before turning them on.

ON MAY 15, 1888, SIX YEARS after Nanaimo became a municipality, The Salvation Army was established in Nanaimo. That is over 129 years ago. The first church was built in 1893 at 19 Nicol St. where it still operates our Family Services today. In 1993, the church received a grant from the City, and the tiny operation of a two-burner stove and a large soup pot to feed the hungry was replaced with an industrial kitchen and a dining room which now provides over 80,000 hot nutritious meals annually. In July 2007, the New Hope Centre was built beside the former church to provide residential programs for those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The Salvation Army operates 2 Thrift Stores (one at 1633 Bowen Rd. and one at 205-6750 N. Island Hwy (by Costco). This will soon in-

The Salvation Army has recently hired a new Child and Youth Director. Carolyn kicked off September with a Community Family Fun Fair. She has great things in store for our youth. To contact Carolyn, call 250-753-8834 or 250-619-5950. Our Fundraising efforts are organized by Dawne Anderson who Coordinates the Kettles at Christmas, a Golf Tournament in June, Food Drives as often as possible, Give n Go and a Santa Shuffle Fun Run in December. As we approach our Kettle Season, we will be hosting our Christmas Kettle Kick Off Luncheon on Wednesday, November 22nd at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre (VICC). Happy Senior’s Month As we get older, our financial needs change. Much of our income becomes ‘fixed’ – from government sources, pension plans and RRIFs. With some planning, you can have a separate fund for bigger one-time expenses such as vacations, roof repairs or health emergencies. You may also want to consider updating your will, power of attorney and health representative agreements. A personalized health benefit plan could also help. KOOL TOYS for “KIDS” from 1 to 92 Dress-Up is not just for Halloween! Halloween is quickly approaching, but dress-up time doesn’t have to be limited to just one day a year. Quality costumes and accessories are a great way to encourage imaginative play. For year-round play, the best costumes are not attached to one particular character. A simple cape can belong to a wizard learning magic spells or superhero waiting to save the world. Colourful wings can belong to a butterfly exploring the flowers or fairy hiding out in the woods. A knight with a shield and helmet can be looking for a dragon or rescuing a person in distress. Costume accessories can be a great excuse to get crafty. Whether starting from scratch or using a kit, there are many opportunities to create props to go along with costumes. For younger children, kits allow you to decorate your own tutus and wings. Mask making kits eliminate the challenge of creating a mask with perfect openings for eyes. A super-simple option is a colour-your-own cape, crown, or even a pirate vest! Creating your own props is a fun way to personalize a costume. Face painting is a fun addition to costumed play. Ready-to-go kits are a simple option and often come with short instruction books for those who have no idea where to start. For sharper images, Caran d’Ache watercolour pastel crayons come in a rainbow of colours and allow for more intricate patterns or fine details

such as whiskers. A major advantage of face painting over masks is that it does not block the view of the child as they move around. Traditional characters never go out of fashion, whether it be a pirate, a knight, a fairy or a wizard. When choosing a costume, consider the use beyond a single day.

NEW TO NANAIMO

MB Mart on Stewart Ave Nanaimo

Mediterranean & Middle Eastern Foods Have a ‘foodie’ or hard-to-shop-for person on your Christmas list? In need of unique stocking stuffers or a scrumptious party platter for a holiday get-together? Consider your dilemma solved: Nanaimo has a fabulous new specialty-foods store sure to dazzle the tastebuds of your friends and family! ‘MB Mart’ has just opened at 572 Stewart Avenue. It is chock-a-block full of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern foods, spices, fresh cheeses, olives, teas and sweets, many of which are beautifully-packaged and stocking stuffer-sized. Walking into the store on Stewart Avenue, the warmth of the decor was matched only by the warmth of the proprietor, Mat. He approached with a broad smile and a slice of exotic cheese in hand: before long I was seated, enjoying a plate of Morocco pie, spanakopita and dolmades from the full-service deli, with sides of baba ganoush, hummus with chips and

Mat’s famous olive tapenade. I washed my meal down with mango juice and chased that with a slice of Turkish Delight and homemade honey Baklava. Leaving the store, I felt like my very Canadian meat-and-potatoes taste buds had just returned from an epicurean trip to the flavours of Greece, Turkey, Arabia and Persia. With indoor and outdoor seating areas and lots of parking out back, there’s no reason not to check out MB Mart’s incredible selection of olive oils, fresh Persian nougat, organic smoked gold plums, hard-to-find spices and, for the first time in Nanaimo, fresh organic Dodoni Feta. So swing by, grab a bite and welcome Mat to Nanaimo! © RIDEOUT COMMUNICATIONS

Simon Says...

Eclipse total del corazón On August 21, 2017 the sun was totally eclipsed by our moon. A total solar eclipse is a natural phenomenon occurring roughly every 18 months somewhere on the planet and results from the fact that even while the sun is 400 times larger than the moon the moon just so happens to be 400 times closer to our planet. This fortunate reality results in the moons’ ability to completely eclipse the sun and, at the same time, to completely baffle and transfix us humans. I have heard from people who stayed north of the path of totality, during this most recent solar eclipse, that the event, at between 87-92% coverage was barely noticeable here in Nanaimo and similarly across Canada. For myself, however, and my oldest son who joined me on a crazy last minute all night drive to Salem, Oregon to bear witness to a total (that’s 100% by the way) solar eclipse; the event was truly awe inspiring. Most of us have seen pictures, movies or TV images of a total solar eclipse. A picture or other image of, really, anything is merely a representation: a pale reflection of the real thing. There is a wide gulf between, for example, seeing a mere photograph of the peak of Mt Everest and beholding it with your own eyes, feeling the sting of the cold in your lungs, the fear and exhilaration in your veins. The same is true of a total solar eclipse.

A good picture can no doubt reveal stunning details of an eclipse: nevertheless, an image is nothing like an experience. To stand there, as we did, on that hot summer day gasping as the moon took ever larger bites from the sun. To feel the anticipation in the seconds before totality and to witness the main event (which is the only time you can safely view the eclipsed sun with the naked eye). At totality, the heat from the sun disappeared and the stars and planets emerged impossibly where only seconds before there was clear blue sky. It was at that instant we heard faint sobs and guttural sounds from people around us just as a cold wind began to blow and the birds flew away in silence. This whole time we were unable to pull away from the sight of what appeared to be a black hole in the sky surrounded by an alien glow that nothing in ordinary experience could have prepared us for. The total solar eclipse experience is mesmerizing and unforgettable. My son and I travelled 20 hours round-trip for a 2-minute experience and we’d do it again in a heartbeat. If you’ve never had the unique pleasure of this experience you owe it to yourself to find a way to make it happen. The next “local” one that I’m aware of is April 8th, 2024 beginning in Mazatlan, Mexico – until then niños y niñas….
