Holiday Decorating

There are a myriad of simple and inexpensive decor ideas that can brighten your home this holiday season. With the dark days of winter upon us, now is the time to amp up the cheer, cosiness and elegance of our indoor spaces. Here are a few ideas to help you get started. • Nothing says elegance like winter white tapers or pillar candles! Surround them with freshly-cut sprigs of holly, Christmas baubles or faux cranberries and you have a holiday centrepiece of seasonal beauty! • Have some glass containers lying around or little-used wine glasses in the cupboard? Fill them with pretty monochromatic Christmas baubles, or unshelled nuts, pinecones, cinnamon sticks and faux cranberries for a touch of cheer • Spray paint some pinecones a cheery cranberry, warm gold, shimmery silver or snowy white, then display in some greenery for a pretty table runner or in a glass container for a seasonal centrepiece

• For a touch of ‘Country Christmas’, fill plain planters, pots and pails with birch logs, or add a tiny string of lights, ornaments or berries to greenery sprigs throughout your home • The judicious use of red can give your home a ‘Country Christmas’ feel, too. Red ribbons and bows on the front door or on the tree, faux cranberries, red candles, and red cushions and throws for the couch can ‘warm up’ a space and enhance the sense of cosiness • Lush gold ribbons, gold ornaments, pinecones and fir branches can create elegant wreaths, tabletops or decorations for the mantle • Putting a wreath of any kind around a bowl of snacks turns it into a pretty table centrepiece! Tiny tabletop ‘trees’ (sprigs of greenery placed

in a vase and hung with small ornaments) add a festive touch to any room Many homes already have most of the materials needed to create great holiday displays. And what isn’t lying around already can usually be purchased inexpensively at any craft store. But there’s no beating the natural beauty that comes from bringing the outdoors in! So take your decorating cue from nature this year, add some pretty candles or baubles, then sit back with a hot beverage and enjoy!

Whats n Wheels

Safe Holiday Driving Winter is here and the holidays will soon be upon us. Roads are busy with

shoppers, party-goers and families travelling home. Before you get behind the wheel this season, do everything you can to make sure you arrive safely at your destination. Check the weather forecast and local winter road report before you go: if the forecast is bad, consider postponing your trip till conditions improve. If you’ve got to head out regardless, remember these winter driving safety tips…. • slow down! Leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front • brake gently to avoid skidding, and plan to stop at a point about ten feet closer than you usually would, to give room to slide if the road is slippery • don’t drive the speed limit unless you feel confident that road conditions warrant it; remember, those limits are for ideal conditions. In very poor driving conditions consider going at least 20 to 30 km/hr below the posted speed • bright sun can create serious glare in winter: be sure to bring your sunglasses • In British Columbia, on most mountain highways, either ‘mud and snow’ or ‘winter’ tires are required on all four wheels between October 1 and March 31

The Canadian Automobile Association recommends that you keep the following items in your trunk, in case of a winter driving emergency. • shovel • sand or kitty litter (for traction) • extra warm clothing and footwear • emergency food • booster cables • matches and a “survival” candle in a deep can (to warm hands, heat a drink or use as an emergency light) It is also recommended that drivers keep the following items inside their vehicle. • ice scraper and brush • flashlight • first aid kit • blanket (special “survival” blankets are best) Perhaps most importantly, start your trip fresh and take enough breaks or rest stops to stay that way. Safe travels and happy holidays!

Acclaimed James & Jamesy steep comic absurdity to rave reviews this Christmas. Fans of Monty Python, Mr. Bean, and Dr. Seuss… Grab your teacups. British comedians James & Jamesy bring their unique brand of holiday hilarity to Vancouver Island this Christmas season. Celebrated internationally by critics and audiences alike, this is the kind of comedy that induces full-out belly laughs all the way through.

“The Christmas season is the time of year when we are encouraged to dream big, embrace imagination, and celebrate childlike excitement for magic and merriment,” says Jamesy (Alastair Knowles) the eccentric half of London’s 3-time Impresario Award-winning duo.

In O Christmas Tea, the duo’s wish for tea is granted, but with catastrophic and uproarious repercussions. “As tea fills Jamesy’s flat (the stage) and floods the world (the audience) with tea, classic aquatic narratives like Jaws, Noah’s ark, and the Titanic all steep together,” said Knowles. The uproarious result is “complete and utter fun” (CBC).

PET TIP The Best Gift You Can Give Your Pets I frequently get asked what the best present would be for a dog or cat. And I always answer the same, “you.” Clients respond somewhere between “seriously?” and “ha ha ha”. I’m actually not joking! The best present your cat or dog can receive is spending time with you. Our family is probably not much different then yours. We race around cooking, baking, visiting, working, decorating, shopping, … we usually have a foster dog that needs some spe-

cial attention, and the list goes on. Sometimes our four legged friends don’t get their favourite walk, or a lap to sit on, or worst of worst…we don’t take them in the car…(an unforgivable offence for our labs). I know that they will let it slip because they love me, but I make a special point to maintain some of the simpler things we do. My favourite example is “The Greeting.” What is “The Greeting”? It’s a very powerful tool to teach your dog or cat that tells them what is expected when you get home. Why do dogs jump around and be crazy when we get home? Well, they are re-establishing the family. They want to find out what they missed in your life, and to let you know what you missed…and they expect you to feel the same way. Take 30 seconds to greet them, say each of their names in the same excited (or calm) tone they are using, and make sure each of them gets some contact time: A pat on the head, a kiss on the nose, a little sideways play push. You know what they like! If you have a bit more time, get right down on the floor with them for a few seconds. They can all get a good sniff that way and satisfy themselves that the world is still safe and happy (and there’s the bonus of puppy kisses). Can’t greet them right away? That’s when the command part comes in. We use “off ” or “leave it”. For us, “off ” means they still have the right to crowd around and create mayhem but they need to wait to get their kisses. “Leave it” means back right off for a few minutes…which is great when your hands are full of Christmas dinner. When you’re ready for them, a quick release word puts them back on track (ours is “ok”). The best gift in the world is the gift of love. Share it with your family and friends this season! Happy Holidays from the staff at Applecross Veterinary Hospital.

Style Tips by KC’s Boutique

Fall Accessory Trends… For Cooler days scarves that can wrap multiple times are being worn and the blanket wrap is replacing the open cardigans we have been buying for the last few years. It has been difficult to find cardigans in the store so why not give a wrap a try. It is the perfect way to add fashion to a simple top or sweater and jeans and look totally put together. The colour choices are rich jewel tones or sophisticated neutrals in solids, abstract floral prints or plaids. Now for the Jewels: Its all about the EARINGS Chandelier with bling, tassels and abstract shapes in various colours, silver or gold and dangling anywhere from 1-4 inchesThis will add an instant style update to your outfit. For NECKLACES it is either the bold chunky short piece sitting at the collarbone. Local artists perform in the Yellow Another new spectacular show! Local Producer and Director Katy Bowen-Roberts, is thrilled to be back at Nanaimo’s beautiful Port Theatre with the longest run yet. Eight performances are slated on the calendar from December 12th – 17th (3pm & 7pm shows). She and her team have completed writing their 11th annual production. This year’s singing and dancing extravaganza includes musical tributes to The Beatles, Nina Simone, Rod Stewart and Lady Gaga. Also Broadway showstoppers from ‘Mary Poppins’, hit tunes from ‘Top Gun’, a country medley of Shania Twain and Garth Brooks tunes as well as many more classical hits and Christmas favorites including the old classic ‘White Christmas’. Katy

encourages the Nanaimo community to make this show a part of its holiday tradition. “There is something in it for everyone!” she says. The creative team which includes Katy, James Mark (Music Composer, Arranger & Violinist) and Lindsay Sterk (Choreographer) had an inspiring weekend of auditions in Vancouver in June and they saw over 100 talented singers and dancers perforrm. The team are excited to welcome several new home-grown cast members to the team this year including Rose McNeil (singer - alto), Patrick Courtin (piano) and Hans Verhoeven (drums). Critical uncovered A critical illness can strike any one of us, at any time and with no warning. You likely know someone who has had cancer, a heart attack or stroke, and who has lived through it. The emotional wear and tear can be intense, as can the financial stress. Critical illness insurance, which pays a tax free living benefit to survivors of insured critical illnesses, can help mitigate the financial impact. Most of us think it will never happen to us. But what if it does? Do you have the resources to take significant time off work, either for yourself, or to take care of a spouse or loved one? Are you prepared to spend your retirement savings instead of using those funds later? Wouldn’t it help if you knew that a critical illness wouldn’t create a personal financial crisis? Lots of options allow a personalized policy to be created just for you, including a return of premium option if you never make a claim. See https://criticaluncovered.ca/en/home/ for more info. Are you curious about critical illness insurance? Let’s meet and discuss your needs. Nahanni Ackroyd Financial Security Advisor, Freedom 55 Financial FMI SEE AD PG 11

HISTORY OF KETTLES The Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign is one of Canada’s largest and most recognizable annual charitable events. In addition to the critical fundraising impact of the Campaign, the Christmas Kettles boost the Army’s visibility and awareness. In fact, there are more than 2,000 kettle locations across Canada that support a wide range of Salvation Army programs. For many Canadians, the Christmas Kettles are their only point of contact with The Salvation Army all year. According to public opinion polling, more than half of all Salvation Army donors list “giving to a Christmas Kettle” as their primary method of giving to The Salvation Army. Furthermore, the Army relies on the co-operation of numerous retail partners to endure the ongoing success of this campaign. Continued goodwill from these retail partners is critical. For all of these reasons, it is crucial that the Christmas Kettle Campaign be effectively and consistently managed across the country. The Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle Campaign has raised funds for more than 120 years to meet its demand for services. The Campaign has grown into one of Canada’s most significant and recognizable annual charitable events.

KOOL TOYS for “KIDS” from 1 to 92 Hot Toys versus Kool (Cool) Toys Finding the perfect Christmas gift for a child can be a challenge. With so many ads featuring the hot toys of the season it’s hard to choose between a “hot” toy and a “cool” toy. Here are some tips for finding a cool toy rather than a hot toy.

a young builder or filled with water to be poured out in the tub. The cool toy may require more initial investment in time or money, but the long term play value will be appreciated long after December 26.

Hot toys are often tied to a specific TV or movie character, or have a single purpose. This limits their play value and reduces the amount of time that they are played with. A cool toy is open ended and engaging. A hot construction toy allows a child to build one particular model, but a cool construction toy encourages you to build new projects repeatedly. Cool traditional games have stood the test of time because there is variation every time you play. Great games allow the whole family to play and enjoy the experience time after time. A memory game featuring animals can be passed down to other children, while the latest superhero quickly loses appeal. Cool toys educate and encourage exploration. A simple magnifying glass can open up a whole new world for a little one. A science kit encourages a child to learn by experimenting. Stacking cups can be the first step for

Simon Says... And I Dance. And I Sing.

It’s the holidays so let’s talk depression. Probably all people run into minor bouts of depression from time to time. When Christmas gives way to the return to the normal rhythm of life sometimes the ‘blahs’ can come in. These so called ‘blahs’ or the feeling that the joy has been temporarily sucked out of your life is what I’m talking about. Any given person may have the ‘Blahs’ or feel ‘bummed-out’ or just ‘down’ this is just a part of the normal range of emotions we all experience. Of course, serious incidents of depression are far more than ‘feeling down’ or being ‘bummed out’ and this article is not intended to render any solutions or to claim to fully understand the complex nature of serious mental illness. In noticing how people who do suffer from serious depression cope with it we can learn from their experience and apply it to our own transient blues. For example, let’s look at one of Canada’s great lyrical talents Matthew Good. In one song entitled While we were hunting rabbits he writes: “I’m just a boat on the ocean. And I’m just a ship lost at sea.” The sense of smallness or isolation this lyric invokes is likely quite representative of how a person feels when he or she is battling depression. Mr. Good’s insight is not surprising given he is bipolar which is a condition marked by severe depression punctuated by feelings of elation and joy. For Matt Good it seems his condition is both a blessing and a curse. His prolific repertoire speaks to the blessing and we are fortunate that his voice is now a part of Canadian culture. Mr. Good apparently is not one to wallow in misery but more apt to channel his energy into his art. It is this channeling that can be instructive for anyone battling the winter blues.

In many situations, like the post Christmas and preNew Years doldrums, when people may simply have a wee touch of the blues, there are many ways to channel this into something productive and at the same time start to return to feeling normal. Since most people are not artists it’s not necessary to go this route; however, if you think you may have an inner artist just waiting to sing, dance or act then go for it. Let’s see what you can do! Another great channel is to write. This could be poetry, a journal or even a letter to grandma. Writing can be very calming and allow you to get your thoughts out in a way that can offer insight. The slam dunk way to beat the holiday blues is to go hit the gym or get out and get sweaty whatever that means to you. Getting active and being physical releases chemicals in the brain that seem to fight the blues. At the very least if you’re on the slopes, breathing in the mountain air and taking in the view from a mile up, who has time to think about bills or the return to work or school? If you can combine your work-out with a group, such as in going skiing or skating, you get a double whammy way to beat your blues. It is almost impossible to be ‘down’ when you are working-out and harder still if you’re doing it with friends or family. We are lucky to live in a city with great access to public facilities for swimming, skating and pumping iron. Luckier still that we have a destination ski hill virtually in our backyard. So, after the lights come down and the tree is off to the chipper get out there and get active. Try to make the most of every day and channel your energy into something positive. You may be a boat on the ocean, but you never need be lost at sea.

Are You Ready for the Holidays? We all know from experience training throughout the holiday or even staying on any healthy eating plan can be very difficult. Let’s create together a plan that will have you come out of the holidays successful. What I mean by successful is staying on track. I also don’t mean not having any of the Holiday fun. The following steps will leave you successful in joining the Christmas fun. I have used these steps for 10 years and they work. 1. Plan out your training schedule for the month. Don’t miss single work out no matter what. (Don’t overbook yourself. I promise the gym will be the first to go when time gets tight. ) 2. Pack your gym bag the night before. 3. Drink plenty of water and/or herbal teas. 4. Prep all your food for the week on Sundays. 5. When going to parties bring your favorite snack, appetizer or dish that is inline with your goals. 6. Pick one day in December that you can indulge in all the holiday favorite snacks. ONE DAY! ( I always pick December 25) (optimal to train that day) this helps you look forward to that one day and it also prevents you from feeling like you’re missing out. Yes, you read in the steps above I want you to have Holiday treats. It’s important not THU DEC 28 CONT’D Canucks vs Blackhawks: 7pm on SNP, SNO and SN360.
