Downtown Duncan’s annual Christmas Kick-off takes place this year on Friday, November 24th from 5:30pm – 8:30pm. Be there to welcome Santa as he arrives by fire truck and be sure to visit him in his Santa Station under the big red tent. The Smiley Family Band will once again be entertaining the crowd from City Square stage and community singers, musicians, and dancers will be performing at the Community Stage. At 8:00pm the evening’s finale begins as fireworks light up the sky from the roof of City Hall. Christmas Kick-off is always a special evening as the community gathers downtown in a festive spirit to welcome in the holiday season. Our little downtown sparkles with lights and shops stay open late to warmly welcome you in from the cold - the charm of Downtown Duncan truly shines on this special night.

Rev Your Engines with This Year’s Crop of Car Movies! There were several new films out for car afficionados this year. Whether you catch them in a theatre or order them up on Netflix, these films are all worth a look-see. Just hang onto your seat! Who would have thought a cult film about street racing would spawn seven sequels? The Fast and Furious franchise keeps upping the ante and movie number eight, The Fate of the Furious, seems to be doing the same. The first actionpacked trailer ends with a submarine obliterating everything in its path. Gearheads will be pleased to see cars that rarely feature in films such as the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, a Plymouth GTX and a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. For a decidedly younger crowd, Cars 3 has lost none of the charm of the first two films. In this installment, the story focuses on McQueen facing a new racing nemesis: ‘Jackson Storm’ is a high-tech hybrid hypercar that makes the older, traditionally-engineered McQueen seem almost obsolete. The animation looks slicker than ever, and the plot fleshes out the characters nicely. Cars 3 still offers kids lots of life-learning lessons, but there is enough substance for adults to savour as well. For bigger kids no other movie can match the Transformers’ big screen spectacle of explosions and crumbling buildings. The series is mostly about fighting robots, but the franchise has still managed to squeeze in some car-focused action scenes. An Aston Martin DB11, Mercedes-AMG

GT R and a new Bumblebee Chevrolet Camaro feature in Transformers: The Last Knight. Behind the scenes footage promises a destructive chase through the English capital which looks to be the best in the series yet. A decidedly older audience will want to check out Collide, an American-German action movie starring Mad Max Fury Road’s Nicholas Hoult and Rogue One’s Felicity Jones. The plot involves drug smugglers and rescuing a kidnapped girlfriend, but it’s all just an excuse to get to the high-octane action scenes with Hoult behind the wheel of an Aston Martin Rapide S, Jaguar XFR, Mercedes SLS and a Citroen C5. Also for an older audience is Keanu Reeves’ action movie comeback John Wick: Chapter 2. This film continues the story of the revengeseeking retired hitman, and trailers have shown he hasn’t lost his love for muscle cars. The sequel opens with a captivating car chase, with Reeves performing a lot of his own stunt driving. The trailer focuses on a vintage Mustang and Chevrolet Chevelle evading gunwielding assassins on bikes through the night time streets of New York. What fun! Start the popcorn popping.

The

Great Canadian Songbook

Hitting the Road with our favourite Canadian Songs to celebrate Canada 150!

The Great Canadian Songbook hits the road in November for 10 shows in British

Columbia and Ontario and four shows will be on Vancouver Island! The show that highlights some of the greatest Canadian songs of the past and present taking audiences on a musical journey from Bonavista to Vancouver Island! Drawing from a wide array of music and a variety of genre’s, features performers Ken Lavigne, Tiller’s Folly and Diyet, combine stories, music and projections, to provide the audience a stylistic overview of Canada’s greatest hits! Featuring the music by Leonard Cohen, Stan Rogers, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Buffy St. Marie, Anne Murray & Stomp’in Tom Connors in addition to contemporary artists including the Bare Naked Ladies, Blue Rodeo and original songs by the Great Canadian SongBook performers. Come sing-along to your favourite Canadian songs!

Ken Lavigne - Why am I excited about this collaboration? “I am really enjoying the rediscovery of some of these Canadian songs, tunes that I have been humming for a long time but actually having an excuse to really sink my teeth and perform has been awesome. That and listening and working with Bruce, Nolan and Laurence (Tiller’s Folly) and Diyet is a real thrill. Favourite song in the show... Impossible to answer really, but I would say Stan Rogers”

Diyet - What is your favour-

ite song on this show? “Universal Soldier, 100%. This song has never been more relevant to me then at this time in the state of the world. A great and lasting song will always be teetering on the edge because it speaks truths that we don’t want to hear or be reminded of. And isn’t that the job of the poet and artist to speak the truth in a language that we can all understand and can’t forget?”Northwest Passage”.

Bruce Coughlan, Tiller’s Folly - Why a show with

these songs? “As Canadians, I think we search for identity within a diverse Canadian cultural landscape. Our vision of the Great Canadian Songbook is based on our experiences growing up in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s. The Great Canadian Songbook for Millennials might sound entirely different. But these songs from all genres of music speak to each Canadian in a different way.”

The Great Canadian Songbook is on Vancouver Island Nov 4: Port Hardy • Nov 6: Sidney at the Mary Winspear Nov. 7 in Courtenay at the Sid Williams Theatre and Nov. 8 in Nanaimo at the Port Theatre. All shows start at 7:30 p.m.

MERRINESS, MAGIC, AND A DASH OF MADNESS

are on the musical menu for Vancouver Island Symphony’s Reindeer Games at 7:30 pm on Saturday, December 2nd at the Port Theatre and at Campbell River’s Tidemark Theatre on Sunday, December 3rd at 2 pm, with guest artist, Festive Brass. With a name like Reindeer Games, you know it will be fun! Vancouver Island Symphony’s Principal trumpeter Stevan Paranosic leads The Festive Brass, which features accomplished Victoria musicians Robert Fraser, Bruce Hurn, and Nick La Riviere. The melding of their classical and jazz talents is magical especially when they are doing what they love most – improvising! They playfully boast that they can play almost any Christmas tune upon request, and will tell you, “If we don’t know it, we’ll fake it.” And you’ll love it. A crowd-pleasing favourite at Butchart Gardens during the Christmas season, Festive Brass has been showcasing their talents since 1998. They have performed with the Vancouver Island Symphony twice before and are so popular we have asked them back. You will hear wonderful holiday pieces like: God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Carol of the Drum, A la Media Noché, Silent Night, Deck the Hall, We Wish You a Merry Christmas and more festive favourites! This is Christmas, Vancouver Island Symphony Style! The entire program appeals to all generations, and with costume changes, lighting and other stage effects, the show fabulously festive. Add in a rousing, carol sing-a-long for the entire audience and this is a performance you won’t want to miss. Music Moves this Christmas season with the Vancouver Island Symphony! BARENAKED LADIES Ed Robertson (GUITAR, VOCALS) • Jim Creeggan (BASS, VOCALS Kevin Hearn (KEYBOARD, GUITAR, VOCALS) • Tyler Stewart (DRUMS, VOCALS)

THE FIFTEENTH STUDIO ALBUM from Barenaked Ladies, Fake Nudes is finely crafted yet flowing with carefree energy, stylistically adventurous yet rooted in timeless melodies and unforgettable hooks. As Robertson explains, the close collaboration that fueled the making of the album has everything to do with the band’s deep connection on an artistic and individual level. “It’s all about trust, and knowing that you can rely on the strengths of your bandmates,” he says. “Whenever I go into the studio with new demos, I can always trust Jim and Ty and Kev’s instincts, and know that adding each of their personalities to the mix will make the songs that much better.” “The diversity that’s always been a hallmark of this band is really liberating when we’re making records, because we never feel restricted to a certain sound,” Robertson notes. “It’s way more malleable than that: whatever sound we all create together, that’s Barenaked Ladies.”

Like much of Barenaked Ladies’ back catalog, many of the tracks on Fake Nudes blend honest emotion with a playfully clever wit. And when it came time to choose a title for the album, the band again tapped into that sly sense of humor. “Anytime we’ve ever been on the radio or a TV show, the intro is always some variation of ‘They’re not naked, and they’re not ladies!’, but we’ve generally avoided making the joke about the name,” says Robertson. “Then while we were working on the album, the title Fake Nudes came to me as a play on the current president’s obsession with deriding the media. It just seemed so perfect—we are fake nudes.” Through the years, the band has endlessly proved their undeniable power as a live act, with each set propelled by their palpable chemistry. On tour in Canada for the rest of 2017, Barenaked Ladies will bring their high-spirited live show to the US and UK in the spring. “The way you get to 29 years together is by really working at it, by listening to each other and respecting each other,” says Robertson in reflecting on the longevity of the band. “When there’s a struggle, you’ve got to take a step back and say, ‘Whatever’s squeaking in the cogs of this machine, let’s work it out, because at the end of the day we get to play music every night and have all these people come out to sing along with us.’

Another new spectacular show! Producer, Director and creator, Katy Bowen-Roberts, is thrilled to be back at Nanaimo’s beautiful Port Theatre with an 8 show run - December 12th – 17th (3pm & 7pm shows). She and her team have almost completed writing their 11th annual production. This year’s singing and dancing extravaganza includes musical tributes to The Beatles, Nina Simone, Rod Stewart and Lady Gaga. Also Broadway showstoppers from ‘Mary Poppins’, hit tunes from ‘Top Gun’, a country medley of Shania Twain and Garth Brooks tunes as well as many more classical hits and Christmas favorites including the old classic ‘White Christmas’. Katy encourages the Nanaimo community to make this show a part of its holiday tradition. “There is something in it for everyone!” she says. Three weeks before the show opens, a cast of 16 professional singers, dancers and musicians will begin an intensive three-week rehearsal period in preparation for opening night. “James Mark, Music Composer & Arranger, and I have been working on this year’s show since March” says creator, Katy. “We are very excited for another spectacle of music, dance, lights and sequins. We are also thrilled to be adding two singers to the vocal ensemble. ” James added “this gives us the opportunity to create more intricate harmonies within each musical set. The musical arrangements have expanded with these added performers and I’m very excited to be arranging the show again”. It’s fast moving, and colorful with a variety of dazzling costumes. It takes you on an emotional journey through a wide variety of music and dance from rock & roll to Broadway, jazz and classical, interwoven with touching readings and stories. The creative team which includes Katy, James and Lindsay Sterk (Choreographer) had an inspiring weekend of auditions in Vancouver in June and they are very happy to have selected this year’s cast. Over 100 talented singers and dancers auditioned making decision making very difficult.

Tickets are on sale at the Port Theatre box office and are selling quickly. Call 250.754.8550 or visit www.porttheatre.com for tickets. FANS OF MONTY PYTHON, MR. BEAN, AND DR. SEUSS will delight in a rollicking Christmas romp through a world steeped in tea, as James & Jamesy present their uproarious holiday-themed comedy, O Christmas Tea: A British Comedy, as part of their Pacific Northwest Tour. “The Christmas season is a magical time of year that brings people of all ages together; a time when we are encouraged to dream big, embrace imagination, and celebrate a childlike excitement for merriment,” explained Alastair Knowles, who plays Jamesy, the quirky and playful half of London’s three-time Impresario Award-winning duo. “This year’s production maintains the joyous holiday spirit sweeping spectators into an immersive adventure, leaving them bubbling with laughter and brimming with holiday cheer.” After writing a letter to Santa requesting tea, the duo must deal with the catastrophic repercussions that come from having their wish granted. Audience members of all ages join them in their action-packed quest to save the world, ever finding innovative and hilarious solutions to keep them, and their hopes, afloat in a sea of tea.

Aaron Malkin, who plays James, added that the duo will be incorporating more of the vibrant fun, meticulous choreography and playful Christmassy adventures that sold out houses last year. “We have new developments to make the whole family squeal with joy: dazzling costumes, floor-to-ceiling projections, new songs and choreography, and magical effects, providing more adventure and wonder than ever before,” he said. “While awash in holiday sparkle, this show has delight enough for Santa-followers and abstainers, both.” James & Jamesy have toured across North America and the UK since 2012, performing their original works – including High Tea, 2 for Tea, and In The Dark – earning rave reviews and lifetime fans.

Horses Helping Soldiers: The History and the Future There is a long-standing history between horses and soldiers. Beyond battlefield utility, horses have been used therapeutically by the military since ancient Greece. During the First World War, British physiotherapist Olive Sands reintroduced equine-based rehabilitation for wounded veterans. Her success prompted the adoption of therapeutic riding for persons with disabilities – starting in the United Kingdom and spreading across the world. The first therapeutic riding program in Canada was introduced in Ontario in 1963. The Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (the national governing body for therapeutic riding) was formed in 1980. The Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association was founded in 1986. Since the early days of therapeutic riding, the focus of therapeutic treatment has shifted from the physical (i.e. corporeal injuries/disability) to the psychological (i.e. mental health). Even more recently, attention has turned to the social impacts of this ser-

vice (i.e. supportive interpersonal connections/sense of belonging). As we develop our understanding of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Operational Stress Injuries (OSI), horses and soldiers are coming together, once again, through equine-facilitated wellness programs. Recent studies have explored the benefits of equine-assisted therapeutic programs serving military veterans with a PTSD/OSI diagnosis. Early findings demonstrate that these interventions help participants to manage conflict, improve communication, regulate moods/emotions, and boost self-esteem. The Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association provides both mounted and unmounted opportunities for “healing through horses. CTRA recognizes those who have given their lives to serve our country and are honoured to provide our services to Armed Forces members and veterans.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS

by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
