Note to our readers Spring has sprung the grass is ris, I wonder where the birdies is… Ok so we are fully into spring and aching, just a bit, for summer days at the beach with ice-cream cones and the smell of coconut sunscreen. Whether golf is your game or tennis or gardening these are the days, here in the rain forest, when we are finally able to get out and get active without getting soaked. Nothing better, for those of us fortunate enough to live in Nanaimo; the jewel of the east coast of Vancouver Island, than to grab a round of golf in the morning, do lunch on Commercial before hitting the shores of Westwood with a good book. If you need some ideas (warning shameless plug ahead) of what to do in Nanaimo in the merry month of May, you know, when you’re not out shopping for Mother-dearest (Mother’s Day May 14th), flip through What’s On Digest in print or online or go to www.whatsondigest.com and fill your head with ideas. There’s really nothing worse than wasting a day by either doing “nothing” (which is impossible by the way unless you’re dead) or by doing nothing engaging, interesting, challenging, fun or active. Okay so maybe there are worse things but it’s still not a good feeling for 5 o’clock to roll around and to feel like you’ve accomplished didly-squat. Am I wrong? No of course I’m not wrong!! Come to think of it that’s exactly why being laid up with the flu in bed all day is so awful. First you’re sick and second all you accomplished was sleeping and taking in fluids. Don’t be sick, be active. Don’t lie in bed all day taking in fluids… get out and sweat some fluids. Get out, get busy, be active and find out what is going on in this amazing, vibrant and activity filled city! Simon Rideout, editor.

Revive Your Outdoor Space! With the ‘Merry Month of May’ upon us there is good reason to anticipate more time spent outdoors. Whether your home has a small balcony, a front stoop or a backyard patio, there are many ways to freshen your outdoor space and increase its appeal as a place to enjoy warm-weather seasons with family and friends. New all-season furniture is always invigorating, but if that isn’t in your budget consider adding some bright throw cushions to your already existing arrangement. A comfy throw draped over a chair is both visually appealing and practical as warm days give way to cool evenings. To keep your outdoor living space feeling private but also open and airy, consider adding some lush hanging plants around the perimeter of your covered area. Greenery such as Sweet Bay Leaf Trees, Arborvitae, Boxwood (real or artificial), Photinia, Sunflowers and Bamboo - whether pot-

ted or planted - are all good choices. If you have a fence with gaps or openings (in other words, a not-so-private fence), a good climbing vine is a great solution for adding privacy and beauty to your yard. Ivy is a classic vine, but so too is Clematis which grows quickly and produces beautiful blooms. To finish an outdoor space consider adding a stylish and practical indoor-outdoor rug. These coverings come in a variety of colours and patterns and are made of fade-resistant and mildew-resistant material. Big impact, low maintenance! Finally, consider adding a lantern or some solar lights for evening enjoyment of your outdoor space. But don’t forget to plant some mosquito-repellant greenery if you do! Marigolds, Lav-

The Open Road Spring is well arrived and summer is beckoning. With fine weather and summer holidays on the horizon many drivers will be thinking of hitting the road. But before launching into a new road trip season it might be fun to look back at famous adventures enjoyed or endured and the lessons learned along the way that have been immortalized in print or film. A bit of Canadian driving trivia: the first successful cross-Canada drive was a 52-day trip from Halifax to Vancouver back in 1912. It was a marketing ploy for the REO Motorcar Company which supplied their Touring Car and a mechanic to accompany journalist Thomas Wilby on the trip. Wilby later wrote the book A Motor Tour Through Canada about the adventure. Another great road trip read is Travels with Charley: In Search of America written by Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck in 1961. The book documents Steinbeck’s 16,000 km trip in a rigged-up camper truck with his pet poodle Charley as his sole companion. Neil Peart, drummer and primary lyricist for the legendary Canadian rock band Rush, has logged many kilometres on his motorcycle and along the way authored four books. His latest is Roadshow: Landscape with Drums: A Concert Tour By Motorcycle.

For more road trip fun turn to Hollywood where it is known that if you stick a dysfunctional family (Little Miss Sunshine), a couple of men (Easy Rider), women (Thelma & Louise), randy teenagers (Y Tu Mama Tambien), or even suicide victims (Wristcutters: A Love Story) in a vehicle for a long time, interesting things are sure to happen! There is a road trip movie out there for everything and everyone, whether you’re looking for comedy (National Lampoon’s Vacation), drama (Transamerica), horror (The Hitcher), action (Duel), romance (It Happened One Night), a teen flick (Road Trip), family fun (The Thing about My Folks) or a movie for kids (The Muppet Movie). Fandango marks college graduation, Sideways celebrates bachelorhood, and Wild Hogs examines the road trip spurred by a mid-life crisis. Whatever your reason for hitting the road, may you find what you’re looking for! © Rideout Communications

" How did it happen?" the doctor asked the

middle-aged farmhand as he set the man's broken leg. "Well, doc, 25 years ago..." "Never mind the past! Tell me how you broke your leg this morning." "Like I was saying... 25 years ago, when I first started working on the farm, that night, right after I'd gone to bed, the farmer's beautiful daughter came into my room. She asked me if there was anything I wanted. I said, "No, everything is fine." "Are you sure?" she asked. "I'm sure," I said. "Isn't there anything I can do for you???" she wanted to know. "I reckon not," I replied. "Excuse me," said the doctor, "What the hell does this story have to do with your broken leg?!?!?" "Well, this morning," the far mhand explained, "when it dawned on me what she meant, I fell off the roof!"

The Landing Liquor store is both a comfortable and friendly place to shop. Located at Brooks Landing in beautiful Nanaimo, BC the store is really the 1 st and easiest to locate when coming off the Horseshoe to Departure Bay ferry terminal and heading up-island. The beer selection is enormous (craft beer and non-craft alike) and the wine selections are plentiful. Recently I enjoyed a 2012 bottle of Colle Secco Rubi. This wine is self-described as “…deep ruby red in colour with a distinct yet delicate vinous bouquet.”The food pairing recommended by the vintner is “…strongly flavoured roasted meats, game, pasta and mature cheeses.” I can vouch for another pairing which worked extremely well with this red: pan seared Ahi Tuna on a bed of lightly dressed spring lettuce mix with wild rice side. Whichever pairing you select the nicely aged and wonderfully complex Colle Secco Rubi will not disappoint. © Rideout Communications

PET TIP Can an Old Dog Learn New Tricks?

Written by Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital

Absolutely, and as a veterinarian, I absolutely encourage it. Older dogs can develop dementia and keeping those little brains active can help reduce age related brain disease.

2. asking to go out, forgetting to pee and coming back inside. Typically they will then ask to go out again, or have an accident in the house

I’m not saying teach your 12 year old lab to play Sudoko, although I’d be very impressed if you could. But providing your dog’s brain with new activities can help stave off dementia.

3. Forming “bad habits” with training that they formally didn’t have problems with. This can be a dog that just doesn’t have the perfect recall he used to, or a dog that suddenly starts stealing food from the counter when she’s never done it before.

Some of the signs of dementia in dogs commonly described include: 1. loss of house training

Recognized by the American Association of Feline Practitioners as a Cat Friendly Practice

4. Sudden severe anxiety. Panting, wide eyed expression, pacing, refusing to settle. There are other reasons for these clinical signs, including some types of hormonal disease, deafness, blindness, seizures, and in kidney or liver conditions. Sometimes in our older patients, it becomes difficult to determine if we are seeing dementia or seizures, as they can look extremely similar. When you come in for your appointment, make sure to bring a video if you can of what you are seeing. Sometimes it can be difficult to explain what you are seeing, and a video will make things very clear. At your appointment, we will do a full neurologic exam. This involves testing your dog’s reflexes, hearing and vision to ensure that the clinical signs aren’t being caused by a physical problem in these areas. The second step is to rule out an internal problem. This is done with a general blood panel to look at the internal organs and electrolytes and includes a general screen for the most common hormonal problems. If these tests are abnormal, we can thing work on treating the problem.

If all these tests are normal, then most likely the cause of your dog’s problems is dementia. This condition does respond to treatment. Every dog is subtly different in how they respond, but I will usually start them on L-Theanine and Vitamin B12. There is strong evidence that L-theanine helps slow and in some cases reverse the signs of dementia. It comes as a treat that is given once or twice a day. Both dogs and cats can develop the inability to properly absorb Vitamin B12 from their diets.

Style Tips by KC’s Boutique

1-5771 Turner Road, Nanaimo kcsboutique.ca

Organize Your Closet this Spring First remove anything from your closet that you can’t wear - pictures, a vacuum, yarn etc. and find them new homes. Next, pull out all of your clothes that don’t work for the season and set them aside. Start by organizing the current season... it will be overwhelming to deal with all your clothes at once, but just get it done. Now group your clothes by “like” items before purging. It will be easy to decide how many of your five black pants you need or which pair looks tired. Be honest - how many keepsake t-shirts do you really need? Don’t hold back! Finally, try on your remaining items. You can’t know how they fit when they’re on the hanger. For each piece remaining, ask the following questions: • Is it a good fit? • Is it a good colour for me? • Can it be altered to fit better? • Is it a current style or dated? • Is the item in good shape or showing its wear?

This means that oral supplements don’t help, because they won’t get absorbed through the intestines. Vitamin B12 is given as an injection under the skin once a week for six weeks, and then monthly. Getting this checked out will help you and your buddy learn those new tricks together.

Tour organizers recommend spending the Friday evening close to home, checking out your most local studios, and taking a weekend adventure to explore beyond your neighbourhood. 12 of the 59 studios are within a 30-minute drive north of Nanaimo—an easy Friday night cruise—Island Wood Art, Carrie Osborn, Cedar Moon Glass, Maloonie, Sharda Kiln-Fired Glass, Elissa Anthony, Fibre Art Voices, Little Red Art House, Madeleine & Stephanie Wood, Marg Selkirk, Creative Spirit Glass Beads and Beyond the Sea Lampwork & Photography... a little of everything! It’s a beautiful 75-minute trip to go all the way to Black Creek and work your way back down-island! There are great restaurants and coffee shops, and some spectacular vistas along the Oceanside Route of Highway 19a. Niel Stoutenburg

Rising Star Trumpeter Bria Skonberg Performs at Jazz Affair 2017 The Friends of Nanaimo Jazz Society is proud to present critically acclaimed New York-based Canadian jazz trumpet player and singer/songwriter Bria Skonberg at this year’s 12th annual Jazz Affair. This highly anticipated Nanaimo, BC event will take place on May 26th, 2017. Jazz Affair is a concert fundraiser that raises essential funds for yearly local music student programs, education, and festival travelling costs. This celebrated jazz community event takes place at the Coast Bastion Hotel at 11 Bastion Street, with doors open at 6 pm. The evening includes a delicious dinner, concert performances, silent auction, and raffles. Tickets are $60 per person and are available through the Port Theatre box office at 125 Front Street, 250-754-8550. Other featured performers for the evening will include the Nanaimo Musicians’ Association. The NMA Big Band is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Student jazz combos will perform from NDSS, the Wellington Jazz Academy, and the Wellington Senior Jazz Band. Multi-award winning trumpet player and singer/songwriter Bria Skonberg has been described by The Wall Street Journal as one of the “most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation,” while Vanity Fair has referred to her as a Millennial “Shaking Up the Jazz World.” DownBeat magazine recognized Skonberg as one of the “25 for the Future” last summer shortly before the release of BRIA in September 2016, her debut on Sony Music’s OKeh Records. The Chilliwack, BC native earned her degree in Jazz Trumpet performance from Capilano University. She juggled working weekends, travelling to festivals and shows with completing schoolwork all while on the road. Skonberg built her stage-show chops with Dal Richards and capped off that exciting period playing at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. She was featured at the Paralympics opening ceremony.

“I want to make music that makes people feel, and think.”

In 2012, Bria released So Is The Day (Random Act Records); her first album on a US-based label. That album project showcased a developing flair for original songs with just the right amount of standards mixed in, and also featured a duet with the legendary John Pizzarelli. So Is The Day received rave reviews from critics, drawing comparisons to Norah Jones in The New York Daily News. In 2015, a year after her second album, Into Your Own, was released, Skonberg received the Jazz At Lincoln Center Swing! Award. To date, Bria has performed at some 100 festivals worldwide. She is the co-founder of the New York Hot Jazz Camp and New York Hot Jazz Festival. Further accolades include Best Vocal and Best Trumpet awards from Hot House Jazz Magazine (2014-15), Outstanding Jazz Artist at the New York Bistro Awards (2014), a DownBeat Rising Star (2013-15), and a nominee for Jazz Journalists’ Association’s Up and Coming Artist (2013). Friends of Nanaimo Jazz Society is thrilled to have Skonberg headlining this year’s Jazz Affair. The two-day fundraising event begins May 25th with clinics for student musicians and is open to all School District 68 students and students of VIU. You will not want to miss this fun, engaging evening with your chance to hear Bria. Be sure to mark this exciting special event on your calendar and purchase tickets now, as we are expecting this event to sell out.

What’s on at the Foundation in May? Everything! You’ve probably noticed that my last few articles have been focusing on the heart. That’s because the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation is fundraising this spring to promote heart health. The campaign is called Healthy Hearts and we’re raising funds to purchase cardiac equipment along with other vital medical equipment for Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). During the month of May you will be receiving a brochure in your mailboxes with a donation form that you can fill out and help support our fundraiser to urgently raise $350,000. This month we are also hosting our annual Run for Life on May 28th to raise money for the specialized Recumbent Bike I wrote about last month. Run for Life has been a staple event for the Foundation for 14 years and through the combined effort of our local financial institutions this 5K fun run has raised over

$260,000 to purchase medical equipment. May is also Leave a Legacy month, a national campaign created to raise awareness and encourage people to leave a gift to a charity through their Will. If you would like to impact future generations and ensure that those who come after you will continue to benefit from excellent healthcare in our community please contact the Foundation and we can help you with your plans. During the month of May we will also be the featured charity in the Nanaimo & Parksville Thrifty Foods locations. Look for opportunities to support local healthcare in stores. For information on any of the above please go to our website www.nanaimohospitalfoundation.com or call the Foundation at 250-755-7690.

BE CAREFUL WITH THAT OLD HARD DRIVE We all have old computers and laptops sitting in our closets or in the garage. Most of these machines contain a lot of personal data. Recycling these machines with the hard drive intact is a very bad idea. If someone got a hold of the drive they could easily get information that could compromise your identity or financial life. Bitrate Computers can “Shred” your hard drives so no information can be read off the hard drives. At the same time if your machine isn’t working and you want some pictures or documents off the hard drive we can do that even if the machine is completely dead. Now that’s killing two birds with one stone isn’t it?

“From the Creators of the Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular!”

A Musical Revue of the Town You Never Knew Tickets are on sale now for Razzle Dazzle Production’s of a new musical for Canada 150. Blackstones & Bathtubs is set to premiere at the Port Theatre July 2nd- 9th. The show follows four tourists who’ve missed their cruise ship departure and are transported by a supernatural storm into a dream. Aboard ‘The Dream of Nanaimo’ our motley crew are moved through moments inspired by Nanaimo’s history and culture. This show is sure to have you wanting more “Nanaimo’ and singing along to boot! Katy Bowen Roberts, Jessica Lowry and James Mark applied to the Nanaimo Canada 150 committee who were seeking proposals for a musical inspired by Nanaimo’s culture and history. The concept from the committee was that this piece be re-mountable from year to year to draw not only for island audiences but for tourism - a legacy piece for Nanaimo. “Part of this dream concept came with the constraint of a piece influenced by history. Nanaimo has so much and you can’t cover that all in an hour long show. I have written the script to be fluid so that different elements could be focused on yearly”, says scriptwriter and director Jessica Lowry. Jessica became intrigued by Nanaimo’s relationship to coal and this idea of an explosive history: mine explosions, fires, challenging, passionate, powerful people. This led to a broader exploration of the fire element and then to an exploration of fire origin stories within the Snuneymuxw culture and other Coast Salish oral traditions. These elements are ignited through song, dance, and story in Blackstones & Bathtubs. The team is working with Snuneymuxw elder Gary Manson who will be helping to create an offstage and onstage presence. A group of Snuneymuxw youth/children will be sharing elements of our story in Hul-qumi-num.

There is a solid roster of Island talent featured. Four lead actor/singers have been cast including Alexander Nicoll of the Comox Valley and Kirsten Van Ritzen of Victoria. Vancouver performers Amy King and Sean Patrick Sonier are also starring. Joining the production team are Comox based lighting designer Robinson Wilson, local sound designer Paul Tedeschini, and Nanaimo’s Raymond Knight of Knight Productions who will be working with historic images and video. Part of Canada 150 incentives are to provide opportunities for youth. An ensemble of six senior pre-professional dancers have been cast and will have the opportunity to work on a full scale production with local Nanaimo choreographer, Nicola Jackson. Nanaimo will have the chance to enjoy their tremendous energy, talent and commitment. “My favorite part of the process is when the charts are performed by live musicians. That first day when we rehearse, you’ve tried something new and it really works. That is so exciting,” says music director and composer James Mark. A five piece band featuring local musicians will be playing James’s original compositions as well as new arrangements by Vancouver Island singer songwriters such as Bob Bossin and Brian Hazelbower. Music will include new twists on Canadian classics: songs by Diana Krall, Rita MacNeil and Leonard Cohen. Audiences are sure to enjoy many twists and turns on this mercurial, theatrical, musical journey into Nanaimo’s ancient roots, explosive history and quirky culture. Tickets are available at the Port Theatre Box Office: 250.754.8550 or www.porttheatre.com. The opening premiere gala performance is July 2nd and tickets include a reception sponsored by Quality Foods. An eight performance run will follow this opening from July 6th – 9th at 3pm & 7pm daily. Book your tickets now! You don’t want to miss this exciting inaugural Nanaimo event.

WORLD LABYRINTH DAY 2017- WALK AS ONE AT ONE AT BETHLEHEM CENTRE Bethlehem Centre presents Walk as One at One Saturday, May 6th, 2017 at 1:00 PM at 2371 Arbot Road in celebration of World Labyrinth Day. Join us for our community labyrinth walk hosted by Holly Carnegie-Letcher. All are welcome to attend. Admission is by donation. Simultaneously all over the globe, communities will be walking labyrinths at 1 pm joining in peaceful world-wide harmony and unity. Following the 1 pm walk, well-known Nanaimo labyrinth author Carol Matthews will introduce participants as host to the Godden Finger Labyrinth Collection. Langley, BC’s late Bill Godden crafted over 3000 finger labyrinths. His interest in labyrinths began in his 70’s and continued until his death at age 91 on March 7th, 2016. Godden selflessly donated each of his finger labyrinths to others at no cost. The beautifully crafted wooden labyrinths are distributed all over the world in various countries. The finger labyrinth is special in that it offers those with a physical disability the chance to experience a labyrinth simply by tracing the labyrinth path with the participant’s fingers. Open to the public in the beautiful woodlands located on Westwood Lake at Bethlehem Centre, the Godden Labyrinth Collection is also worth visiting for some reflective in-the-moment meditation. Since 430 BC, labyrinths have been based upon a single path that always returns to the center, whereas a winding maze most often has multiple paths leading to trickster dead-ends. Walking the labyrinth is a centering, calming experience that

offers a tranquil meditation in motion, always returning to the balanced center. Labyrinths are thought to enhance right brain activity and can be useful for problem-solving, conflict resolution, meditation and modern day pilgrimage. PHOTO CREDIT: JOHN HALL

Join us at Walk as One at One for the unique calming transformative experience of walking the labyrinth together as one on Saturday May 6th. Bring comfortable walking shoes for a peaceful day of reflection and unity. End of the day refreshments will be served following the presentation on the Godden Finger Labyrinth Collection with Carol Matthews. Hope to see you there! For more information about World Labyrinth Day, please visit the Labyrinth Society website at https://labyrinthsociety.org. Balance Balance, what does it mean? When it comes to fitness and health in my experience most have the all or nothing approach. You can either be full-on or off the fitness wagon so to speak. Have you ever started a fitness program to only fall off 2-4 weeks after you start? When you start out you are all about fitness and eating healthy. You feel unstoppable. You made your mind up you are going to start living a new healthy life forever. One mishap happens and then the “why bother” mentality kicks in. I always think of this as the “slashing tire effect”. You get one flat tire and then you go around your car slashing the other 3 perfectly good tires. Doesn’t quite make sense does it. There is the other side of being too obsessive. Where once you start you are scared to stop. Being fearful of gaining 10lbs if you miss a workout. It can take over your entire life. For example you starting exercising and it dictates your life. Secluding yourself from friends and family because you don’t want to be around bad food or missing events because you have a workout planned. What does the above have to do with balance. Well balance in training and eating healthy is very necessary! You need to find a middle ground. Your motivation will wear thin with time. Revamp it through these following basic steps: 1. Schedule your off training days 2. Planning treat meals once every 10-15 days 3. Taking a full week off training every once in a while 2-3 months. 4. Plan your workout days in advance 5. Plan around your life events. I would take my cheat days when I know I can be on track. Schedule workout days around important events, etc.

Simon Says...

We never get to stop and open our eyes. What does it mean to be rare? A rare steak is more purple inside than pink. If you call a man a “rare bird” you’re saying he’s unusual. In economics rare items have greater value than those found in abundance. Merriam-Webster tells us that rare is: “exquisite, elegant, delicate [and] scarce....” Particle physicist Dr Brian Edward Cox, contemporary genius, is known for such works as: The Quantum Universe, Wonders of Life and, the mind bogglingly insightful, The Human Universe. Through these books, turned BBC programs, Dr. Cox explores this thing called “existence” and probes some of the biggest questions we have such as: “who are we?” and “are we alone in the universe?” In The Human Universe (okay so the title is a bit of a spoiler) Dr. Cox focuses on the apparent rarity of life outside Earth. Dr. Cox is disarming in his approach and demeanour and is prone more to wondering than lecturing. His reflection, at times, seems simple such as talking scientifically about patterns in nature. He walks us through patterns that are apparent to the layman and similar, emergent, patterns observable at the level of solar systems and similarly at the sub-atomic level. He moves to more complex analyses and notes how certain physical laws in time and space seem to allow for some systems in our universe to form as not randomly, or even by design, but because of their innate properties. He notes that just because such laws allow matter to interact in specific ways this alone doesn’t guarantee that complex organisms will arise. Dr. Cox offers arguable hypotheses and seems genuinely concerned at how humanity appears to completely take everything we have on this planetary oasis, in an otherwise (to all appearances) uninhabited void, for granted. Most people cling to what they “know” or

simply can’t or won’t challenge “how things are.” Many people, when presented with new ways of understanding that challenge the “how things are” mentality, will take the path of least resistance and simply reject the new information. It’s part of the human condition. It’s what makes us both resilient and vulnerable. Many people quite readily agree that there is likely other life in the universe. Perhaps fewer but still a great deal of people would allow that there is even a high probability of intelligent life in the universe or perhaps even in our own galaxy. There is, of course, another possibility which is that humanity is utterly unique in the galaxy and even the universe. Dr. Cox entertains this idea and notes that this potential rarity coupled with the finite nature of existence itself compels humanity to spread out beyond the confines of Earth; beyond the confines of our birthplace. Because such an effort would require humanity to work together as one it seems hard to stay hopeful especially if you look around at how isolated and small minded the preponderance of world leaders are. Dr. Cox is just one, very educated and apparently brilliant, person who has a helpful way of interpreting existence and life. His ideas may not help us in with our daily struggles but, given the chance, he might just give us a new perspective and a new appreciation for how rare we may be in the universe. If only those most engaged educators, parents, preachers and teachers would read or watch The Human Universe and work to inculcate this rich and hopeful perspective in the up and coming generations, in order for them to better appreciate what we have and how easy it is to take for granted, we might have a chance at nudging the evolution of our existential consciousness (if there be such a thing) forward an iota or two.
