The Noteworthy Kids Music Club and the Vancouver Island Symphony’s Children’s Choir Reading, writing and ‘rithmatic - and music! As a new school year approaches bringing with it the blank slate of brand new notebooks and freshly sharpened pencils, the Vancouver Island Symphony is tuning its instruments and preparing songbooks for young singers in Grades 4 - 7. The Noteworthy Kids Music Club and the Vancouver Island Symphony’s Children’s Choir are two ways the symphony brings music into the lives of young people in a professional and engaging way. Great programs for kids who LOVE music! “It’s this magical age with music where children still have that sort of wonder and awe, but they’re also at the age where they can really start to see themselves as music makers,” says Mark Beaty, the Education Manager at the Vancouver Island Symphony. “They can see themselves in those roles. We know that many kids

have music at home and they are benefiting from all that music brings into their lives. I see the work that the symphony does with children as a chance to level the playing field and make it possible for all students of all backgrounds to experience music as we do it in the symphony.” The Noteworthy Kids Music Club is an expansion of the Vancouver Island Symphony’s Education Program. Members get to meet the Conductor, Pierre Simard, interact with different sections of the orchestra backstage and attend special events exclusive to Noteworthy Kids Music Club members. The kids also receive a special invitation to attend a dress rehearsal of Infinity, Star Wars and Holst’s Planets with a friend on April 26, 2019. While the Noteworthy Kids Music Club focuses on the instruments of an orchestra, the Vancouver Island Symphony’s Children’s Choir is an opportunity for kids who love to sing to sing

even more, with the support of professionals who guide and mentor them as they develop their voices. “Some kids just can’t get enough,” says Patricia Plumley, Choral Conductor with the Vancouver Island Symphony’s Children’s Choir. “We work on establishing good vocal habits that they’ll have for the rest of their lives. We focus on encouraging music and singing as a lifelong endeavour.” The choir will be singing with the one and only, Rick Scott, in the My Symphony Show that happens for every grade 4 in School District 68! Auditions for The Vancouver Island Symphony’s Children’s Choir are held by making an appointment, with rehearsals every Thursday from 5:30 - 6:30, September through March. The annual cost is $150. The Noteworthy Kids Club runs September through April, with approximately eight events, at the cost of $99. Bursaries are available. For more information on both programs, contact the Vancouver Island Symphony, 250-7540177. Keeping Music Live.

PET TIP Fleas Fleas Fleas Fleas…the bane of many a dog’s existence. You look one day, and there’s nothing…no fleas, no evidence of fleas, and then the very next day your pet is crawling in six-legged hitchhikers bent on getting a blood meal from your pet. They can suddenly appear. Fleas live in a dormant state that they can remain in until conditions are best for them. They can wake

Written by Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital

up within a few minutes. Dormant fleas wait for warmth and moisture, and then will continue to wait until there are vibrations in the environment that might indicate a mammal. I’ve seen this happen when someone enters a previously infested room that hasn’t been treated, or when a closed room gets vacuumed. Because fleas like moisture as well as heat, we see two spikes in fleas on Vancouver Island. The first is in the spring as the weather starts to heat up, and the second is in the fall as the rains start up after a hot, dry summer. That doesn’t mean they aren’t present at other times of the year. We see a few pets with fleas every day at the clinic, with surges of flea infestations after snow melts, or when it rains during a mid-summer drought. What do you do if you HAVE fleas…Get flea medication and keep your pet on it for a minimum of three months. Flea infestations can take three to six months to clean up entirely, depending on the medication you’re using. After the fleas are gone, deworm your pet. Our pets will try and remove fleas from their body by scratching and biting at them. Doing this, they will almost certainly eat a few, and most fleas carry an internal parasite that will then take up residence in your pet. If you have any questions about fleas, our staff would be happy to get the answers for you! Give the staff at Applecross a call to discuss your pets unwanted six legged friends.

Style Tips by KC’s Boutique

Love the look of an oversized sweater? •• Pair them with a skinny jean or legging and boots with a small heel to elongate the legs. •• Plaid pants/scarves and shirts are huge this fall to wear with all sweaters and cardigans...Plaid it up! •• If you feel like a sweater is too bulky, try a front tuck to keep it more streamlined. •• Add shape by adding a belt and blousing over waist. •• Lace shirts or tanks under your sweater are feminine and look adorable left to peek out. •• Add lots of statement necklaces like strings of pearls for a glam look. •• Layer a vest over your fall knit for a pulled together look and a little extra warmth. Always choose your best colours and check labels for breathable fibres like cotton, rayon or wool that will help keep you cool if you tend to overheat. Cowl necklines are making a comeback. They are so flattering and versatile . Larger cowl necks can be brought up over your head to make a hood or pulled across the shoulders to create a shawl neckline...Play with your collars. Wear a nice white blouse under a v-neck sweater or cardigan and let the blouse pop out the bottom and make sure your collar is fully outside the sweater. This look is always in style..

What’s On – Games for Brains

Single player games are a great way to get brains in gear. Most single-player games are logic based, with a series of progressively more challenging puzzles to solve. They can be played on their own or used as a group challenge. Games exists for children as young as two, and some so challenging that most adults struggle to complete the highest levels.

At first it is a great demonstration of light reflection, but as the challenges increase in difficulty a good degree of logic is required to solve the puzzle. There are junior and senior versions of this game, for ages 5 and up. From 2 to 102, there are brain games for all ages!

For toddlers, Bunny Boo is a clever little puzzle game. With just four simple wooden pieces and 60 levelled activity cards, young children rearrange then solid pieces to replicate the designs on the cards. This game is a fun introduction to problem solving and builds spatial intelligence. The cute wooden bunny also makes a great imaginative toy when they need a break from the game. Balance Beans is a seesaw logic game. It introduces elementary algebra concepts by having players balance plastic beans on a seesaw. The guide cards show you where to place the Red Beans on the plank, and then you must attempt to balance the seesaw by finding homes for the remaining beans. It starts off with simple challenges and progresses through to a ‘super hard’ level. As the challenges get harder, players must rely on math skills to balance the board or equation. A handy carrying bag is included for on-the-go playing. For young scientist, Laser Maze incorporates mirrors and lasers into the logic puzzles. A game card indicates the placement of the first couple pieces, then the player must figure out where to place mirrors and blockers. You win when the laser is turned on, reflects off the mirrors and hit its target.

NCDC TELETHON NCDC TELETHON is happening on Sunday, September 30th! “Nanaimo Child Development Centre Telethon really is a celebration of community”, says Tracy Berg, in Resource Development. The Telethon gives us a chance to recognize so many generous donors, service clubs and community partners that donate through-out the year. We also get to celebrate the amazing local talent we have right here in our community as these artists give of their time for our cause. This year we have the Moonshine Molly’s who are a cool glass of lemonade on a warm summer’s day closing the Telethon, with their unique brand of West Coast Country.

This show boasts dance groups, singers, bib bands, jugglers, choirs, jazz trio’s and more – with 8 straight hours of entertainment. With all great Telethon’s we also have the phone bank volunteers ready to take those donations over the phone, by simply calling 250.591.KIDS during the show. This years feature children’s performer will be the Kerplunks at 2pm – tickets are required for this portion of the show, but are FREE and available through the Port Theatre box office. For all information about this year’s telethon, visit the Centre’s website www.nanaimocdc.com.

Keep Your Computer Healthy! Did you know that computers, just like people, can get ‘sick’ from a virus? A computer virus is a type of malicious software that replicates itself by modifying other computer programs and inserting its own code. People create computer viruses for a range of reasons, including profit (i.e. ransomware), personal amusement, sending a political message, or to demonstrate that a vulnerability exists in the software. Computer viruses cause billions of dollars worth of economic damage each year through system failures, the wasting of computer resources, the corruption of data, and an increase in maintenance costs. In response, free open-source antivirus tools have been developed, and an industry of antivirus software has cropped up, selling or freely distributing virus protection to users of various operating systems. Windows Defender comes with windows 10 and is generally what we recommend at Bitrate Computers. There are many more programs such as: Avast Free Antivirus, Avira Free Antivirus, and AVG Free AntiVirus to name just a few. Here is a quick list of things you can do to protect your computer from viruses: •• Keep your software up to date, •• Don’t click on links within emails •• Back up your computer

CANADA’S MOST AUTHENTIC PINK FLOYD TRIBUTE Local Pink Floyd fans are in for a treat this fall as PIGS: Canada’s Pink Floyd brings their acclaimed live show across Canada to perform some of the most amazing music ever created. Currently Canada’s only national touring Pink Floyd tribute, the Outside / In Canadian Tour 2018 will take PIGS from Nanaimo, BC to Sydney, NS and back. Celebrate the 45th anniversary of The Dark Side of the Moon with PIGS, as they recreate the live Pink Floyd experience, bringing the majestic music and legendary concert experience to fans and new audiences alike. PIGS are well known throughout Canada for their authentic rendition of classic Pink Floyd songs both new and old—this year the band will be performing many great tunes from albums as early as Atom Heart Mother to later classics from The Division Bell. As a special 45th anniversary treat, PIGS will also be performing THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON in its entirety at every show. Come and hear Pink Floyd’s epic masterpiece played in full, with lasers and a giant Mr Screen, flawlessly played with authentic instrumentation for the most incredible live sound. After years of playing songs from throughout Pink Floyd’s vast catalogue, PIGS are excited to dig deep into the crucial years of 1970-1975 on this tour to really explore the history around some of the greatest music ever set to tape. Formed in 2008 in Victoria, British Columbia, PIGS: Canada’s Pink Floyd Tribute honour Pink Floyd’s music like no other band. They have spent over ten years meticulously recreating the live sound and concert experience of seventies-era Pink Floyd and have perfected their craft in front of sold out audiences throughout Canada. Using authentic instruments and equipment, the band recreates the sound and live concert experience of Pink Floyd in their heyday. Pink Floyd’s live show was always a huge part of their appeal—and PIGS have been working to keep that experience alive for generations to come. They have the voices, the mannerisms, the authentic gear, the lights, lasers, visuals, and the sound. PIGS shows truly are a labour of love. Over a dozen

Shows proudly presented by Ghostfinger Productions www.ghostfingerproductions.com Visuals by VJ Photon www.vjphoton.com different guitars and basses are used each night, songs are carefully performed combining aspects from both studio and original live versions, and the correct equipment is used when possible down to the proper cables and guitar strings. Set-lists are developed to contain the biggest hits and the most interesting rarities; PIGS do everything they can to keep their shows fresh, dynamic, authentic, and exciting for their fans. One of Canada’s premiere visual artists, VJ Photon (Erik Nortman) has been working with PIGS since 2009, collaborating with the band to combine their own material with original footage from Pink Floyd’s Mr Screen, closely imitating the classic look from the seventies with state of the art visuals and lasers. PIGS’ Outside / In Tour brings fans an incredible night with almost 3 full hours of flawlessly played music, authentic sound, state of the art lasers and visuals to bring you as close to the legendary Pink Floyd concert experience as possible.
