The Blink Acro cirque troupe in collaboration with VIS Artistic Director Pierre Simard chose the orchestral music to perform their amazing routines above the orchestra. Musical highlights include the music by Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas; Debussy’s Clair de Lune, Prokofiev’s Dance of the Knights from Romeo and Juliet; Brahms’ Serenade No.1 and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4.

PET TIP Happy Cat Month And what better way to celebrate Happy Cat Month then to find new ways to play with your cat. That doesn’t mean you need to go out and buy a toy. As we all know, cats can make play out of almost anything. But what’s a good idea? What’s safe? What isn’t? Cats are extremely agile and athletic, using play to burn off stress and as an outlet for their hunting drive. Playing with your cat is a great opportunity to bring them closer to you, and an outlet for all that extra energy. Indoor cats especially benefit because bored cats eat and sleep. And just like us, that means weight gain and all the complications that go with it.

Written by Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital

Cats like to play with things that are light and small. Choose something that is small enough to easily move when your cat smacks it, but not so small that she could easily swallow it. Many cats will chase a wadded-up piece of paper or masking tape, even initiating games of fetch if you show them you will keep throwing it if they bring it to you. Easy game? Ball in a dry bathtub game. Throw a ping pong ball into a dry bathtub and roll it up the sides a few times. I have met few cats that can resist the slide up the side followed by the rapid roll down. That, and you don’t have to fish out the ping pong ball she’s managed to get stuck under the fridge. Toys that aren’t safe for cats. Obviously, cats will play with anything. They are tricksters, hunters, and have a joy of life that most of us can’t maintain. There are some things however that they would love to play with that just aren’t safe. First rule of thumb…if she’s eating it…take it away. Some consider Catnip a toy and this is the exception. Catnip is completely safe for your cat to eat. In fact, catnip is good for digestion and can help some cats that have digestive troubles. But any other toy…no munching! Any piece of string (ribbon, dental floss, tinsel, yarn, etc) should be hidden so your cat doesn’t accidentally chew on them. This goes double for anything with a bit of stretch to it (hair elastics, elastic bands, etc). String easily gets caught in the intestines, and can cause serious problems, when there is stretch to the string things go from bad to worse very quickly. Remove handles from paper bags and keep plastic bags away from cats all together. Cats like getting inside things. Paper bags are hard to tangle yourself up in if the handles are removed, but plastic bags can become dangerous very quickly. Don’t assume that if you can buy something as a cat toy, that it is completely safe for a cat. A lot of them need to be cat proofed before you allow your cat to play with them. Remove feathers, tinsel, eyes, buttons, and ribbons. Really, remove anything your cat could remove and swallow easily. Some of these toys, like the fishing-rod type, can still be used for your cat as long as he is supervised while doing it. The string on that rod is dangerous if she manages to chew it off while unsupervised. Enjoy time with your cat and have a HAPPY CAT MONTH!!!!!

When you begin to search for your fall or winter outerwear, review your needs.

When you begin to search for your fall or winter outerwear, review your needs. Will you be wanting just one coat or do you have a need for more? Will it need to be longer to wear over a dress or shorter to wear with pants? Are you wanting a career or casual look or both? What way do you get around...car..walk…or public transportation? What styles and colours do you usually prefer.? Shop before the cold weather arrives for the best selection! Choose unique stand out coats to go to the theatre or special events. Long coats are generally on the dressier side. The trend this year is all about colour! Berry tones, blues and greens dominate. Neutrals include grey, black and cream although brown and camel are making a comeback. Knee length coats and short jackets with military details are fashionable.

KOOL TOYS for “KIDS” from 1 to 92

Unplugged coding for kids Learning to program computers is like learning a new language, and it is a language that many children now learn when they are young. Even preschool children can begin learning the basic concepts behind coding. The best part is that the basic principles can be learned without sitting in front of a screen! There are several coding games on the market for children. Robot Turtles is the bestselling game ever launched on Kickstarter and has since won many awards. It sneakily teaches the fundamentals of programming. The beauty of this game is that it is adaptable for ages 4 and up. As skills evolve, the game can be adapted to become more challenging. There are even secret “Galapagos rules” you can download, that allow you to adapt the game for ages 8 and up. For younger children who need to move around, the Let’s Go Code Activity Set by Learning Resources is a modern twist on hopscotch. This is a team-based game where children set up a maze of foam based tiles on the floor and follow a ‘program’ another player has set out for them to complete the path across the tiles. Children can start with the sample mazes included and then build up to creating their own. For older children and adults, the //Code series of single player games are great brain teasers. These can be played as a series of puzzles on your own or as a small group cooperative challenge. Each game box has a set of 40 problems to solve using a limited number of program cards. These cards are arranged in a repeating pattern to guide the robot through a maze. When we tried this game, it took a while to get

the basics, but once we understood the programming principles the easiest levels were simple. Once basics are mastered, more programming cards are added and the mazes become longer and more challenging. Without ever turning on a screen, it’s fun and easy for children to gain an understanding of how computer programming works.

a Blink Acro Cirque Spectacular BLINK ACRO is a modern cirque entertainment company that brings sensual grace to hand to hand aerial contortion and other unique acrobatic performances. This, combined with Vancouver Island Symphony’s orchestral love stories, brings together passion and romance in a tailor-made world premiere entitled LOVE! on Saturday, November 17th with two shows at 3 pm and 7:30 pm. “There’s something magical about performing with a live orchestra says Jason Waugh, Artistic Director at Blink Acro. “It’s a huge honour for us to present this world premiere with the Vancouver Island Symphony and something that has been on our bucket list.” The Blink Acro cirque troupe in collaboration with VIS Artistic Director Pierre Simard chose the orchestral music to perform their amazing routines above the orchestra. Musical highlights include the music by Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas; Debussy’s Clair de Lune, Prokofiev’s Dance of the Knights from Romeo and Juliet; Brahms’ Serenade No.1 and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4. It is going to be visually beautiful and the music is going to bring LOVE! to everyone in the audience.” “Music, no matter what kind, belongs to everyone,” says Simard. “That is something that doesn’t change with time.” Waugh agrees, “We’re bringing a modern contemporary cirque art form to traditional orchestral music. THE LOCAL FEDERATION OF CANADIAN ARTISTS PRESENTS THE 3rd ANNUAL NANAIMO FINE ART SHOW Artists and art lovers alike need to mark their calendars to ensure they won’t miss the 3rd Annual Nanaimo Fine Art Show. This juried show presents the work of members of the Federation of Canadian Artists from Vancouver Island FCA chapters in Nanaimo, Victoria, and Arrowsmith – and these are members who have already been awarded Active, Associate or Signature Status via previous jury processes! The show will be held at the Nanaimo Conference Centre in the Dodd Narrows Rooms, and it opens to the public on November 2nd. The Canadian Federation of Artists (FCA) was founded in 1941 by an elite group of Canadian Artists including members of the Group of Seven. Art works accepted into this spectacular show are judged by three outstanding jurors resulting in a showcase of the very best. In 2017, with 95 paintings, we greeted more than 700 visitors (an increase of 40% over our first show). We’re sure the upcoming show will build on this early success. Once again this year, there will be a silent auction which celebrates community sponsors by offering the public a chance to bid on a variety of treasures. It commences on November 2nd at 9am and closes at 9pm on Nov. 3rd. We hope to see many visitors in support of art, purchasing art cards, bidding on the auction items, and casting their votes

for the People’s Choice Award. The winner of this award will be posted on our website: www.nanaimofca.com. Nanaimo Chapter President, Bonnie Stebbings, urges everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to view outstanding art and encourages visitors to enjoy “the diversity… wide variety of styles... differing viewpoints and high levels of skill” that will be on display and for sale. Original art brings an appreciation and joy that can never be matched by prints and posters. With the holiday season right around the corner, perhaps you’ll find that special gift for yourself or your loved ones. Josee Duffhues, and Judith Madsen are truly excited to co-chair this year’s event. Toni Onley once said: “artists are the keepers of culture;” their work is a reflection of society in its many colours. The NFCA is also supported by a great many sponsors contributing money in support of original art--making it possible to display great works at this amazing annual event. The show could not happen without the assistance of many member volunteers. We thank them all. We are also truly grateful to the Nanaimo Business Community and the City of Nanaimo. Without these sponsors, we could not showcase the many talented artists of Vancouver Island. Check out our sponsors at www.nanaimofca.com and at our show.

Keep Your Computer Healthy! Have you ever stopped to think about the many things you use your personal computer for? Or how easy and instantaneous they make many aspects of our lives? For anyone who remembers flipping through phone books or searching library file cards, it’s astonishing to think of the depth of up-to-the-minute information that is at our fingertips these days thanks to the computers and the Internet. If you’ve ever used a typewriter with a ribbon or shaken a jar of whiteout, there are really no words to express the gratitude you probably feel every time you fire up your computer and type up a letter or document and simply hit ‘print’. I mean, you can make errors simply disappear on your computer. It’s like they were never there! So, the next time you feel frustrated because your computer seems a bit slow, take a moment at VIU for campus tours, program information and sample lectures. 09:00am at Vancouver Island University, 900 Fifth Street.
