Each year home owners spend thousands of dollars on sewer line and drain tile replacement. Various factors including tree roots, soil and deposits, grease or other contaminants or debris can contribute to the deterioration of the ability of your home drainage system to operate effectively. This can cause everything from toilet over-flows to water infiltration in the basement to back-ups of sewage into shared drains such as showers or bath tubs. If the line is old, it is a good idea to replace the whole system and bring it in compliance with the building code. In other cases, it may simply be a section that can be repaired. Often, it’s just a matter of a simple (low cost) cleaning and flushing to clear debris and resolve your problem. If you think the problem may be a blockage you might want to do a drain inspection using a CCTV camera. The inspection may save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Here’s how it works:

1. A small closed-circuit camera is introduced into the drain and is fed along your sewer or perimeter drain. The operator checks the images on the screen for debris. Any debris or issues are indexed so the homeowner will know exactly what and where it is. 2. If a problem is identified it can usually be fixed with either a drain cable or via a Hydro Jet. A drain cable is a rotating cable with a blade designed to cut through debris such as roots or other potential blockages. A Hydro Jet is a different piece of equipment that uses a high-pressure water spray with enough power to burst through blockages and fully clean the pipe. There are some technical considerations with either approach that will inform the best route for you and the proper expertise and experience are critical.

This summer Nanaimo’s heart of the city will beat a bit stronger during the Thursday night Commercial Street Night Market. The popularity of ‘night markets’ has grown throughout urban centres over the past few years and now it’s Nanaimo’s turn to join this popular movement. “Based on our experience producing the Bathtub Days Street Fair last summer, a group of merchants were discussing the chances of expanding on that event with us. We simply said… let’s just do that over and over again next summer, and the Night Market idea was launched” according to Kim Smythe of the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce. “It’s one of a number of ideas we’re hoping to present downtown in 2018.” Commercial Street from Terminal Avenue to Church & Chapel Streets will be closed to vehicular

Real food is either unprocessed or made with very little processing. Real food does not need a label or fancy packaging. A deli sandwich is made to order and is filled with the nutrients that your body craves. Real food is typically a whole food that is life sustaining and requires minimal packaging. Our bodies are made to digest real food, not highly processed stuff that may taste OK but really does nothing to improve our health. If you have yet to try a Nellie’s Deli sandwich then you owe it to your body to come in and try one today!

PET TIP Summer Travel Ever heard of the saying “Dog days of summer”? According to Wikipedia, The Dog Days of Summer are actually NOT named after the laziness of dogs during the summer months. Dog Days actually refers to the rising of the star Sirius which generally occurs around July 3 and runs to around August 11.

Written by Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital

Want to know where Sirius is? It is the brightest star (next to the sun) and found in the southwestern sky as part of the Canis Major constellation.

Sirius was also worshiped in Egypt as the Goddess Sopdet, and associated with the annual flooding of the Nile.

Sirius is also the portent of fevers and sickness which for our dogs means watch out for heat stroke! Heat stroke can occur when the weather is hot, or if there is limited air flow in a warm area. Dogs that have shorter muzzles, respiratory disease, or heart disease are particularly susceptible to heat stroke. The clinical signs are “panicked panting”, vomiting, diarrhoea or collapse.

DEDICATED TO PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE

My dogs and I avoid this nasty condition by spending our time seeking out cool areas. That doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy time in the garden or out on hikes. In the garden, they chase the water I’m trying to get on the wilting plants, and then crawl in under the beans or tomatoes to wait for “hike time”.

We tend to avoid longer hikes, and when we do I bring a lot of extra water for them. Our hikes focus more on forest regions where there is plenty of shade, then the open sun or pavement. We try to make at least one lake or river stop for swimming along the way and cooling off. I pack extra water, snacks (for dogs and people), and a cotton scarf in case I need to get someone cool really quickly. Cotton scarves are great for soaking up water and wringing it over a hot head and back. You can also use it to keep paws wet if you are a long way from help and you have a collapsed dog. Dogs loose a lot of heat through their feet, and keeping them (and the rest of their bodies) wet can save a life. Let us know on Facebook your favourite activities with your dog during the Dog Days of Summer!

Style Tips P by KC’s Boutique

Looking and feeling cool during the summer has its challenges. Here are a few ideas to get your warm weather wardrobe in order.

Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics like linen, silk and cotton. Many lines use the perfect blend of natural and synthetic fabrics to keep you cool without the wrinkling of pure linen or cotton. Look for viscose, bamboo and rayon blends. Dress in light colours, especially on top because they reflect the light away. A summer wardrobe of soft grey, tan, white and taupe will serve you well. Pairing white with navy creates a fresh, crisp summer look perfect for travel or dressing up. Reach for dresses, skirts, and wide leg or palazzo pants to stay cool. If you want more coverage in a skirt or dress, avoid the panty hose and instead wear maxi or midi styles. If you are planning to spend time in air conditioning like on a cruise or at the office, make sure you have lightweight layers ready. Simple cardigans, shrugs or unlined blazers are practical to have in your bag or at your desk and can turn any outfit into a polished look. If you are concerned about sweat marks, go for patterned clothing which camouflages sweat much better than solid colours. Loose fitting and draped tops are great options too.

KOOL TOYS for “KIDS” from 1 to 92

Kool and child Summer vacations are the perfect time for active play! A great piece of equipment can be the catalyst for an afternoon of recreation - especially when a single piece can perform multiple functions. The modern hula hoop has been around for over 50 years! Traditional round hoops are available in assorted sizes, as well as newer designs with v-shaped rings that make performing tricks even easier. Group get-togethers are the perfect time to see who can keep their hoop spinning the longest or come up with the craziest trick. This is the ideal opportunity for grown-ups to show the kids how hooping is really done. When the spinning is over, hoops also double as great targets for throwing games. A super-bouncy ball or crazy-bounce ball can add to the challenge of hitting a target. For a new twist on racket games, Ogodisks, or ‘hand trampolines’, are great for multi-age play. Invent your own rules for a back-and-forth or over-the-net game with the included stringy ball. Homemade balls are another possibility with these rackets, as long as there are no sharp edges. For another twist they also double as a flying disc or an amazing water balloon launcher. Their bouncy surface looks deceptively light, but they stand up to years of play. Pogo jumpers bring out the kid in everyone. These bouncy foam blocks with bungee cord handles are the simplest form of pogo stick. With a high weight rating, we haven’t figured out why they only show children on the boxes. Extensively staff tested, we never fail to laugh while they’re in use. The model with a built in counter is

the perfect opportunity to see which family member can log the most bounces in one use. For indoor or outdoor use, they are great for burning off excess energy. At the beach, in a backyard or even in a rec room we hope that you find a family fun activity that can keep you moving and laughing at the same time. You’re never too old to play!

NUKO NANAIMO IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR SEPTEMBER 2018. Visit: https://www.nuko.ca/ and click on “Programs Available” to find the online application! Nanaimo Unique Kids Organization Mission: “NUKO will be a leader in supporting children and youth in a unique learning environment that fosters personal, social and life skills development, to prepare successful and thriving individuals in our community.” NUKO’s story began in 2005 when a group of parents banded together to create a learning centre where their children could be successful. NUKO opened the doors to a centre offering low student to adult ratios and a safe, accepting environment featuring small class sizes and a caring team of support staff. Since these humble beginnings, NUKO has grown to two centres and are able to serve children aged 2.5 - 19 who face neurological disabilities like autism, downs syndrome, FAS and others that impact learning. Providing support academically, recreationally, socially and be-

haviourally, NUKO still maintains the standard set by those early families who saw the importance of providing the very best to our “Unique Kids”. We are proud of our successes - we have seen students obtain their adult graduation, and gain the skills needed to transition back into the public system. NUKO is a non-profit, registered Canadian charity. “I cannot express in words the difference NUKO has made for my son. His learning, cognitive abilities, social skills, self-awareness, self-confidence, mindfulness, and overall joy has improved significantly since he has attended NUKO. He laughs, shares stories about his day, he talks about his friends at school, and he is learning! His printing has improved, and I have noticed a significant increase in his vocabulary, sentence structure, and expressing himself.” NUKO parent. Want to learn more? Give us a call 250-591-0102

Hello friends, hello neighbours.

NANAIMO’S OWN!

There is no reason you should have to service your own computer. Don’t spend valuable time trying to figure out a solution to a sporadic computer issue. The reality is if you spend (waste) an hour or more trying to fix your computer issue it has probably already cost you more in time than it would be in dollars to simply the PC or Laptop to Bitrate. Our philosophy at Bitrate Computers is simple: honest, affordable computer repair and no ‘tech talk’. Bring it in and we can usually have it fixed and ready for pick-up the same day. Symp h on y b y t he Sea 2018 Saturday, August 11th, 2018 6:00 PM This community event is proudly presented by the Vancouver Island Symphony and admission is by donation. Each year 5,000+ people head to Maffeo Sutton Park with picnic blankets, lawn chairs - (and sometimes umbrellas, as it

is a rain or shine event) – to enjoy the glorious music of the Vancouver Island Symphony. “This is our gift of live music to the people of Nanaimo,” says Pierre Simard, Vancouver Island Symphony’s Artistic Director. This year the Vancouver Island Symphony will feature music from the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle. Everyone in the audience are encouraged to wear their favourite hat or fascinator. In addition, VIS’s Concertmaster Calvin Dyck will be featured as a soloist in music from the Four Seasons by Vivaldi, and the famous “Hot Canary” complete with his own favourite hat - a yellow fedora complete with an Ostrich feather! The second half of the concert will feature music from your favourite movies and TV shows: music from “La La Land”, “The Greatest Showman”, “Downton Abbey”, “Les Miserables” and “Pirates of the Caribbean”. To top it off, thousands of paper lunch bags will be distributed to the audience - and they will be asked to provide the ‘cannon shots’ in the 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky. “This is audience participation at its best,” says Calvin Dyck, producer of Symphony by the Sea. Donations will be collected to help pay for this premiere musical event. For more information on Symphony by the Sea and all the performances the Vancouver Island Symphony are performing next season, please visit www.vancouverislandsymphony.com. Keeping Music Live!

ġĩħĨ Ŋ ĢĠġĨ How to Create Safety for a Woman who Has Experienced Violence

Safety changes everything.

Believe her. Put aside your judgments and just listen. Don't ask why she stayed or what she was wearing. Question why violence happens. Create space for her anger and grief. Offer practical help: child care, rides, meals, caring for a pet. Offer to be part of her safety plan in case she needs help. Respect her choices and tell her you're there for her. Challenge myths about abuse and violence. Be informed. Attend Haven 101. Learn about violence against women and the services offered at Haven. Suggest that she call Haven for information.

Simon Says. . . 30

whatsondigest.com | AUGUST 2018

IT’S JUST A WALK IN THE PARK KAZANSKY If you ever happen find yourself at, for example, Nanaimo’s Bungy Zone standing at the edge of the bridge with the big rubber bands tied to your ankles your friends may sense your fear and want to reassure you with words like: “Just do it” or “no fear.” These statements are great when we know we have no choice but to push forward in the face of adversity. Once we have entered a scary or intense circumstance we literally are “just doing it” and at that point we really have no practical use for fear. In this case at least denying fear a place in our consciousness is probably a pretty good idea. Case in point, the fighter pilot cannot easily undo the action of leaving the safety of the hangar and flying into combat anymore than he can ignore the intensity of experience of flying at over 1000 miles per hour. Once he’s up there and engaged with the enemy there really is no turning back nor is there room for self-doubt or paralysing fear. Similarly, you can’t undo being selected to perform at a high level once you have shown yourself to be highly capable in a given field or pursuit. If you are recognized as an elite then, unless you are a recluse, you must perform accordingly. If you consistently fail to perform then you will, rightfully, be asked to either step-up or step-aside. After all, almost anyone can be bad or mediocre at something. Typically, only a very few people develop their skills to the level of “good” with fewer still making it to “expert.” So, what is happening when you, the performer, are selected but then you fail to perform? One root cause of failure to perform is, newsflash, performance anxiety. This is when the nerves and butterflies are so overwhelming

that the ability of the performer noticeably suffers. The head (brain) is interpreting the signals coming in from the heart and other parts of the body as something to be defended against. This may cause the performer to disengage or only appear to give a half-hearted effort. The reason is simply that the head, urging caution and retreat, is getting in the way of the heart or the desire to jump in full steam ahead. In these situations, as a performer, you must find a way to let go of, or at least suspend the un-helpful advice from, your well-meaning brain. To be effective (and to overcome the anxiety) you just need to listen to, and trust, your heart. I little self talk can also come in handy. For example (warning Top Gun analogy ahead) when Maverick, during F-18 aerial combat training, retorts to his not-so-friendly compatriot Tom “Ice-Man” Kazansky’s needling question “…You think you can handle this Maverick?” Maverick simply replies: “…it’s just a walk in the park Kazansky….” His calm response belies his internal turmoil as if to say: “…yeah my heart might be beating out of my chest right now, and yes I have my doubts, and I realize the slightest mistake may be my last but I’m in control. In this way Mavericks self talk is designed to calm himself down so he can get out there, perform at the highest level and win. Simon Says never stop striving and stretching and yearning toward perfection. Never let your tendency toward caution become the unwitting internal architect of self-defeating behaviour. Get up, get out there and give it all you’ve got. RIDEOUT COMMUNICATIONS ©
