The goal of the Spotlight Series is to bring diverse and exceptional artists to the Port Theatre stage that audiences in our region may not otherwise experience. The 2019-20 Spotlight Series certainly does that! Here’s a look at November’s Spotlight Shows … Les Voix Humaines Consort of Viols have thrilled audiences worldwide and now the Port Theatre welcomes this amazing ensemble to Nanaimo and The Port Theatre stage November 3rd! This performance of Dowland Lachrimae will resonate with the natural acoustics of The Port Theatre as it will within you, sweeping you away to a time of beauty, sadness and descending tetrachord. This iconic work defies the 21st century concept of sound bites and tweets, slow, patient and rich in harmony, allowing us all time for contemplation and solace, The original sonnet and song that this music is set to, speak to our hearts of the pain of love lost. This beautiful program includes diverse pavans, galliards and allemands, which in our Port Theatre concert alternates with the Dowland Lachrimae. We invite you to Les Voix Humaine’s concert and share some all-too-rare moments of respite from a busy world. November’s Spotlight Series line-up has something to please everyone tastes – from Baroque to B&B. On November 6, the Arts Club Theatre Company brings their production Bed & Breakfast to the Port Theatre stage. Bed & Breakfast is a heartfelt comedy of gay life in a small town. When Brett inherits

a family estate, he and his partner, Drew, move to a quiet little tourist town to set up a B&B. But will these big city boys face friction in their new community? Bed & Breakfast is a “virtuoso dance” of dozens of hilarious characters all portrayed by two actors! *Contains mature themes and some strong language. If a smaller, intimate, cabaret style show is more your taste, we have something to please your palate too. Co-presented with the Nanaimo International Jazz Festival Association, The Port Theatre’s OFFStage Jazz Series kicks off in November with John Lee on November 5th. John Lee is known for being a gifted multi-instrumentalist who can both engage the audience and improvise fluidly on the guitar, piano, bass, drums and vocals. Enjoy your jazz with a glass of wine in the casual setting of the Port Theatre lobby and stay after to meet the musicians. The 2019-20 Spotlight Series is a mix of relevant, bold and outrageously excellent performances – flavoured to please every palate. Check out the full season line-up at https://www.porttheatre. com/tickets/spotlight We tempt you try a few performances from the exceptional mix of music, theatre and dance performances as buying multiple shows can save you up to 25% We look forward to seeing you there!

Style Tips by KC’s Boutique

Don’t wait to shop when the cold weather hits. Best Selection is now. Consider your lifestyle. Will one or more jackets be necessary this Fall? Many women use a jacket or coat as their fashion statement. It helps you stand out in the crowd, completes an outfit or simply keeps you warm, dry or cozy. Do you wear dresses and tunics? You may choose a ¾ coat length that provides a finished, look. Or is your wardrobe very casual consisting mostly denim so a sporty shorter jacket would be best. Business /Career look would be more classic, heavy with straight lines. An outdoor woman or a person who rides public transportation needs a portable, weather repellant jacket that doesn’t weigh you down but keeps you warm and dry. Westcoast living or travel dictates rainwear as a must. Many ladies are simply getting in and out of the car of which a VEST OR PONCHO works well and helps if you tend to overheat... FASHION TRENDS THIS FALL 2019 Not so much in the wool fabric as many find allergic sensitivities but Faux Fur is fun! Have you booked your tickets yet for this Vancouver Island holiday favorite?

What better way to celebrate the season than with a night out at the 13th annual Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular. Another new show and new experience!

The cast was selected in June after several days of amazing auditions in Vancouver. “We are lucky to have so much incredible talent in BC. One of my goals with this show has always been to provide employment for some of these artists right here on Vancouver Island”, says Katy. Katy spends all year working on the creation of each new show but the cast are only together for 5 weeks. “I am excited for November 18th when the ensemble will finally be together and we can actually see our work on the stage.” It’s fast moving and colorful. It will take you on an emotional journey through a wide variety of music and dance from rock & roll to Broadway, jazz and classical, interwoven with touching readings and stories. Dazzling costumes continue to arrive from around the world, the Christmas Carpenters are busy at work readying the decorations and scene for the stage, beautiful decorations are starting to arrive for the Christmas shop which can be found in the Port Theatre lobby, the Santa’s Elves are getting ready to help and the creative team are busy brainstorming ideas for each scene of the program. The cast will take you through the eras with a variety of dance styles from tap to broadway, ballet and jazz. This year's show includes musical medleys of well known songs by Billy Joel, Gloria Estefan, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, a nostalgic war time set, a Broadway medley of Singin' in the Rain songs, music from Amelie, Bing Crosby's classic 'White Christmas' as well as many more classical hits and Christmas favourites. Tickets are on sale and selling at all three venues. The production runs in Courtenay at the Sid Williams Theatre (Dec 9 & 10), in Victoria at the McPherson Playhouse (Dec 14 & 15) and in Nanaimo at the Port Theatre (Dec 17 – 22). Book now so you don’t miss this holiday tradition. For tickets to the Port Theatre in Nanaimo, call 250.754.8550 or visit www.YellowPointChristmasSpectacular.ca for more info.

Fitness tip When holiday season approaches draw up a nutrition and workout plan. This can assist you with staying on track with your fitness through shortbread days and eggnog nights. Here are some useful tips that will help you stay on track during holiday season. First, plan your diet so you can have nutritious snacks prior to attending parties and other events. Plan your exercise and ways to keep your body moving as well. By making plans, you can keep up your fitness and enjoy life at the same time. Second, to stay healthy and consistent with exercise during the holidays, break your workout time down into small tasks. Keep things simple when it comes to working out. This may even mean doing a home-work out. Finally, it can be difficult to say no to parties. I get it. Support Ending for Windows 7 Microsoft is ending its support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020. If that is the operating system you have on your personal computer or laptop, you have a decision to make. And soon. Personal computers (PCs) with Windows 7 will still work after support has ended, but they will be vulnerable to hackers and viruses because they will no longer receive software updates - including security updates – from Microsoft - Consequently it would not be wise to do ANY online banking or anything else that entails personal information. Microsoft will also be stopping any Technical support past the ending date. To get Windows 10 you need to upgrade your existing device. All Windows 7 devices should be compatible with Windows 10. Fans of monty python, Mr. Bean, and Dr. Seuss… Grab your Teacups! Buckle your theatre seats and grab your teacups, British comedians James and Jamesy are bringing their unique brand of hilarity to British Columbia this holiday season. Reminiscent of classic British pantos, O Christmas Tea is rich with wordplay, comic physicality, and cleverly crafted interactive elements, yet it is the duo’s chemistry and charisma that provide the real magic of this play. James and Jamesy have already won just about every comedy award they can, and the reason is obvious: these two are exceptional. Stepping away from their Off-Broadway debut in New York, the duo will perform 4 shows on Vancouver Island. Islanders, leap to get tickets. “The Christmas season is the time of year when we are encouraged to dream big, embrace imagination, and celebrate child-like excitement for magic and merriment,” says Jamesy (Alastair Knowles) the quirky half of London’s 3-time Impresario Award-winning duo. Juxtaposing British propriety with an COURTENAY - SID WILLIAMS THEATRE, November 27, 7:30pm VICTORIA - ROYAL THEATRE. unabashed love for the absurd, O Christmas Tea casts away the conventions of theatre and joyously breaks the fourth wall. Just about the only thing these two don’t break is their tea set in this wonderful evening of play and whimsy. “In O Christmas Tea, Jamesy’s wish for tea is granted, but with catastrophic and uproarious repercussions,” says Knowles. “As tea fills my flat, then bursts through the fourth wall to flood the world, our performance spills from the stage into the audience. Classic aquatic narratives like Jaws, Noah’s ark, and the Titanic are all steeped together and thematically wrapped up in the Christmas spirit.” Describing any part of this show does the art a disservice, as this show must be seen to be understood. Go see this show! The script is absolutely astonishing and these two titans of the International Comedy circuit present one of the tightest pieces of theatre I have ever seen.

The manager of a large office noticed one of his department heads had hired a new man, so the boss called him into his office for a little orientation speech. "What is your name?" he asked. "John," the new guy replied. The manager scowled, "Look, I don't know what kind of place you worked at before, but I don't call anyone by their first name. It breeds familiarity and that leads to a breakdown in authority. I refer to my employees by their last names only - Smith, Jones, Baker - that's all. I am to be referred to only as Mr. Robertson. Now that we got that straight, what is your last name?" The new guy sighed and said, "Darling. John Darling."

"Okay, John, back to work!”

The 21 Annual Nanaimo Artwalk st

The Nanaimo Artwalk is celebrating 21 years of local art and artists, sharing their creativity with the community and you! In the early years there were only a few artists participating in the Old City Quarter and Downtown Nanaimo. This year, the Nanaimo Artwalk has 29 locations with more than 43 artists, presenting their artwork. It is a great reflection on how much artistic talent we have right here in Nanaimo! The 2019 Artwalk features many new artists and several exciting new locations. It is a great opportunity for the artists to promote their work. You will find all kinds of different artwork: original paintings, ceramics, fused glass, jewelry, basketry, fabric art, prints, photography, drawings, sculptures, etc., with different subject matter from landscapes to abstracts.

It is a great opportunity to purchase original artwork as a Christmas present for that special person in your life, or update your own home with a new piece of art. The Nanaimo Artwalk booklet can be found in local businesses in the Downtown and Old City Quarter areas. It includes a map and a notes page to help you find locations and to remember outstanding pieces of art. Use it to plan your weekend with art adventures. You can find more information, detailed artist bios and a downloadable map on our website: www.nanaimoartwalk.com The Nanaimo Artwalk Committee: Janice Hofman, Willow Friday, Gerda Hofman, Katherine Moore. We like to thank the City of Nanaimo for their generous contribution, to make the Nanaimo Artwalk a huge success, year after year.

Cherry Pick this one for a gut-splitting night on the town Critically acclaimed comedian Mike Delamont is back with a twist on Christmas! This is the 6th installment of the series. Victoria BC based Delamont is back with his Scottish accent and infectious character. In this installment, God connects with the audience on human rights in our society. He really does not have to search very far into the bible to find some hilarious discrepancies. His message is a ‘take it or leave it’ but don’t cherry pick. With the typical audience interaction striking a chord Delamont never breaks character laughing all the while along with the audience. Be sure to mark your calendars for December 3rd 7:30 at The Port Theatre. Join everyone’s favorite deity in a power suit as God celebrates Jesus’ birthday and skewers everything from Brussel sprouts to the

three wise men in an unforgettable evening of holiday hilarity! One of the most popular shows on the international fringe circuit, God Is A Scottish Drag Queen has won 18 “Best of the Fest” awards, as well as Critics Choice for Best Comedy and Best Solo show at the Orlando Fringe Festival. If you appreciate impeccable delivery of one-liners and quick wit you won’t want to miss this one. Estate Planning… Why Is It So Important? When looking at wealth planning as a whole, many consider estate planning to be one of the most emotionally challenging aspects. For some, it comes down to a discomfort around thinking about death or worries about upsetting family members or creating conflict; for others it is the uncertainty as to what their own future holds and how to handle certain family situations. While these can function as deterrents from decisionmaking, they actually represent the exact reason that estate planning is so important. Avoiding these important decisions, or making the wrong ones because of a lack of knowledge or professional advice, often increases likelihood of disruptions to family harmony, increases the time and complexity to administer an estate, may result in higher taxes, and means your assets may not end up where you want them. Having a structured process and with the right mindset will help ensure your intentions are realized and will encourage smooth and successful transitions. The Other Half is a collaboration between Vanessa and Belinda; revisiting the shared muscle memory of their youth as an impetus for a new duet — exploring concepts of physicality and contagion through the prism of the immune system.

Container & The Other Half is a double bill featuring two bold and exciting works from Action at a Distance, performed by Vanessa Goodman & Belinda McGuire at Malaspina Theatre on November 30th at 7:30 PM. Container is a solo work by company artistic director, choreographer and performer, Vanessa Goodman. Dancing in space with dynamic lighting designed by James Proudfoot, the piece explores heritage, culture & resistance by synthesizing movement with contemporary immersive technologies. “A visceral solo dance bursting out of a starkly abstract stage and costume design. Goodman’s character is born into a rectangle of light, moves powerfully but haltingly through the darkness, and then returns to the light. She moved to the industrial-ambient music in a way that elicited from me an audible and unbeckoned “damn” at the end of the performance.” – Rich Smith, The Seattle Stranger

“It is fascinating to witness Belinda’s synaptic patterning that I understand so well from having danced beside her for so many years in our youth. Even though we hadn’t danced together for over a decade [and reconnected in 2017] , it was clear that we have a shared history that is still informing and inspiring my choreographic practice to this day. It was remarkable to witness traces of my own history in her system. We are very different dancers, but there is a current that connects us. This shared muscle memory is etched into our movement DNA, which we use in “The Other Half”.- Vanessa Goodman The shared antibodies of their past fuse with a new collection of pathogens to play off the harmony and conflict of two bodies as familiar with one another as they are foreign. By working to see the world through each other’s eyes in The Other Half, they find ways to re-compose and re-experience what it is like re-connect.
