Make a Small-Space Garden Oasis Have a small balcony or terrace you’d like to turn into a welcome, lush retreat for summer? There are several ways to green-up a small space that can make it as peaceful and pretty as a larger yard or patio! Living or ‘green’ walls are textured plantings that make great use of limited space. To create these vertical gardens, plants are rooted into a structure that is attached to a wall. Your nearby garden center or nursery should be able to help you get started. Be sure to talk to them about the microclimate of the area where your wall is located. To create an interesting living wall consider using a range of herbaceous perennials, grasses, small shrubs, herbs and even fruit and vegetables. To create the illusion of more space, consider painting the walls of your small exterior space white or cream because of its brightening and lightening properties. White painted brickwork and white garden furniture creates a beautifully summery scheme that has serious style. You don’t need a lawn to create a lush garden: just add lots of pots and fill them with everything from

tiny flowering plants to tall, bushy trees. Finish off with some garden furniture and you’ll have the perfect spot to enjoy a warm summer’s day! Make use of a pretty fence, railing or trellis to add colour and greenery to your small space. Even the tiniest terrace can be transformed into a decorative outdoor retreat using climbing plants that lift flowers and foliage up off the ground. Add elegance with aluminium and stone planters and a few carefully chosen pieces such as an oversized lantern, a small bistro set or an unusual bird sculpture. Placing objects of interest at the end of your ‘garden’ area creates the illusion that your space is bigger than it is. Choose white garden furniture and position it towards the back of a paved area. Add interest with plants at all heights and in all areas: climbers and ramblers, evergreen shrubs and sculptural grasses, ground cover and colour-heavy

cottage-garden favourites such as foxglove and delphinium will bring your tiny space to life. Another trick for small spaces is strategically-placed mirrors - they visually double the amount of space you have and increase light levels in darker corners. There are really no limits to the creative ways you can add beauty and lushness to the tiniest of spaces. Have fun and enjoy!

The Psychology of Bad Driving Tailgating, Cutting off. Speeding. Blocking in. There is no end to the aggressive driving behaviour faced daily on the road. Research into the psychology of WHY there is so much poor driving points to several fascinating factors. • Young drivers (male in particular) tend to be more excitement sensation-seeking and impulsive than older drivers, thus more likely to drive in an aggressive manner. Given as well that there are no immediate social repercussions to bad driving (unlike budding in line or bumping into someone while walking), plenty of people think they can get away with behaving badly behind the wheel. When there isn’t in-person interaction, there is a loss of inhibition • Research indicates that some drivers have less sensitivity to punishment, meaning the possibility of receiving a fine does not act as a deterrent • Many drivers overestimate their ability to control the car in speeding or rule violation situations: in other words, we believe we’re safer than we are. Additionally, over time as driving becomes more automatic, we develop the illusion that we can predict and/or control the behaviour of others and thus the situation • Research indicates that we behave more aggressively (prolonged honking, tailgating) towards those of perceived ‘lower status’: larger vehicles outrank smaller, newer outranks older, and faster outranks slower. Drivers of more expensive cars are most likely to behave aggressively towards pedestrians

• People generally drive more recklessly when alone in the car • Drivers tend to overestimate how much time can be saved by driving fast, and underestimate a minimal safe braking distance • We attribute near misses and the mistakes of others to their lack of ability or their personality whereas we justify our own behaviour on the road as situational or necessary Risk propensity differs across the lifespan and across genders, with young drivers in general being more reckless than older drivers, and male drivers in general being more reckless than female drivers. There are of course many exceptions. The take-away from this research? Being aware of certain human tendencies (including your own!) can’t protect you in every instance on the road, but it can certainly increase your chances of reaching your destination safely.

PET TIP My dog’s vomiting, is this just the stomach flu? Last month we talked about following your instincts and looking for blood in the vomit or diarrhea of your dog. Your instincts are valuable because you know your dog and you know when there is a change in behaviour. It’s important to look for blood as this typically indicates a need for immediate attention by your vet. Here we conclude our 2-part series on when vomiting

by your dog means you need to get him to the vet. Vomiting in dogs can be simple or very serious. Does your friend like to eat things they shouldn’t. Are they the guy that likes to tear up their stuffed toys, do they like to steal Dad’s socks, did they get into the garbage? Sudden changes in demeanor and sudden onset of vomiting could mean there is something stuck in the intestine. There is an incorrect assumption that if a dog is passing feces they don’t have something stuck. This IS NOT true. Whether a dog is defecating or not is based on where the foreign body is stuck, how long ago it was stuck, and what material the foreign body is made from. If your dog is NOT passing vomit but appears to be trying to wretch. If your dog is stretching out their stomach and seems uncomfortable. If your dog’s abdomen is slightly larger than normal or appears to be getting larger. If your dog is a larger breed (although don’t ignore these signs in a smaller dog). THIS IS AN EMERGENCY. THIS IS BLOAT. Do not wait for morning, go to the closest veterinarian that is open and call on the way. DO NOT WAIT. Bloat is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate surgical intervention. Vomiting is a nondescript clinical sign that can sometimes be treated at home, or it can be a life-threatening emergency. If you are unsure where your dog is on that scale, call a veterinarian to get help. Be ready to answer the questions above and be ready to act if it is deemed an emergency.

Travelling to Europe? Follow this Packing Advice

Your holiday is booked and it’s time to plan what’s going in your suitcase. PACK LIGHT means PACK RIGHT. Most people return from their trip saying they packed too many clothes or not the right ones. KC’s Boutique gets great feedback from our customers’ travel adventures. Many report that Europe is getting warmer and the only places you may feel cool will be on the plane and in air-conditioned dining rooms. A wrap or scarf in your carry-on-bag or a lightweight cardigan will be helpful. You won’t need to take rain gear unless you are heading to Scandinavian countries or London, where the weather can change many times a day so layering is your best bet. Dress is casual throughout Europe, so concentrate on comfort and versatility. And be sure to bring footwear that works on cobblestone streets! If you’re cruising, you’ll want to bring more clothes to accommodate the activities and climates at each port, plus a few evening outfits for dinners and special events. Bring minimal toiletry items; focus on the clothes! Whether you’re on a cruise or travelling via land, pack for the best care scenarios, not the “what-ifs”. If you forget something, the fun part is shopping for it in a European shop! Your carry-on is very important. Take a practical bag and don’t worry about matching your luggage. Pack items to entertain you including electronics, books, and travel

brochures. Whatever you need to keep you occupied during your flight and while waiting for trains and tours. Take the stress out of packing your suitcase and visit us at KC’s Boutique to discover our travel wardrobe PACKING FORMULA for success!

A Day at the Beach With the warmer days finally here there are many options for getting outside to enjoy the sun. A day at the beach is a local favourite. A traditional bucket and shovel are a great start to loading up any beach bag, but there are other fun additions to enhance a day on the sand. Many beaches have nice open areas that are perfect for flying a kite. Instead of lugging a large kite, a pocket kite is a great addition to any beach bag. These are parafoil style kites that fold up into a carry bag, with no struts to worry about. Made of ripstop nylon, you don’t need to worry about them catching on a twig or sharp rock as they get pulled across the sand by an enthusiastic young flyer. With so many rocks and small creatures found on a beach, a magnifying glass is another great addition to your beach bag. Discover what a grain of sand look like up close. Ask a child if it looks like larger rocks on the beach? Trap a sand flea in a bug jar and examine its legs to see how it moves along the sand. A close-up view puts beach treasures in a whole new light. In the world of sandcastle building, there are new tools for creating your perfect castle. The QUUT line of beach toys from Belgium has innovative stackable sand moulds which allow even the youngest castle builders to successfully build with sand. Their combination sturdy shovel and sieves are another great beach toy and it doubles as a small snows shovel in the winter. A scooped shovel lets you pick up more sand at once, while smaller shovels exist for the tiniest hands. For a tradition-

al castle turret, you can get buckets with crenellations built in. There are even sand baking kits, for making sand cookies that every child loves presenting to their parent. Whether it’s splashing around or building the castle of your dreams, we hope you get a chance to hang out at the beach this summer.

THE CARNATION CEREMONY WILL MOVE YOU. Kicking off summer, the Save on Foods Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival brings together 72 teams at Nanaimo’s premier dragon boat regatta that offers you free admission to an epic line up of racing, entertainment and ceremonies, and a variety of food trucks, artisans and exhibitors.

At the end of the ceremony, pink carnations fly through the air into Swy-a-lana Lagoon to remember those who have lost their battle. Carnations for purchase on site at 10:00am Sunday, breast cancer survivors race 11:10 am, and Carnation Ceremony 12:00pm

The 16th Save on Foods Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival is a multi-day celebration of sports, arts and culture that attracts thousands each year to Maffeo Sutton Park July 6-8th, 2018. From start to finish, you’ll eat, cheer, move to the dance and music provided by the Infringing Dance Festival and celebrate within a beautiful setting.

“We are honoured to be recognized for making contributions towards the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer patients on Central Vancouver Island but the paddlers, sponsors, volunteers and members of the general public who support our festival are the true heroes” notes Heiko Behn, Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival Society Chair.

The Carnation Ceremony will move everyone. After the Breast Cancer Survivor race, paddlers and spectators alike experience speech, songs and poems while holding a pink carnation high. It’s a tradition that gives everyone a moment to remember and honour those who have passed away from breast cancer, those who are still fighting, and those who have survived.

It Falls Apart into Little Pieces on the Floor. With almost every component in your PC, you’ll see warning signs of a component going bad or in need of replacement. The hard drive is no exception. Here are some indicators that something may be failing. First: disappearing files. Files can be lost due to mechanical problems with the disk itself. In some cases, you’ll be able to tell as the disk usually makes some out-of-the-ordinary noises when it’s experiencing failure. Secondly: computer freezing. A computer freezing is a common occurrence, and it’s almost always solved by a quick reboot. However, if you find that that it’s becoming more frequent, your hard drive could be going the way of the Dodo. Lastly: corrupted data. If you’ve downloaded and installed files without a hitch, but suddenly out of nowhere, files have become corrupt, it’s possible that your hard drive is experiencing a gradual failure. If you have any of these issues or any

issues at all with your PC please bring them into Bitrate for a complete diagnostic.

MERCEDES COURTOREILLE AS ROXIE

DEAN CHADWICK AS BILLY FLYNN

AMBER LOCHEAD AS VELMA KELLY

Schmooze Productions has officially launched ticket sales for their upcoming musical, Chicago ~ Broadway’s Killer Hit Musical! This has been a long time in the making. They have been working on securing the performance rights for this particular musical for over 10 years!! Finally, ROXIE ROCKS NANAIMO! Because of the sheer magnitude and scope of this incredibly popular, and elusive, show, they will perform it at the Malaspina Theatre at Vancouver Island University between June 20th and 30th, 2018. Tickets cost $20 - $40(includes taxes and service charge) and are available now at www.schmoozeproductions.com. Dean Chadwick, the Artistic Director, mentioned, “I first saw a Broadway touring company performance of Chicago in Vancouver about a decade ago, and it became my fast favourite musical of all time! And that’s says a lot from a guy who spent most of his adult life directing and performing in them.” If you have never heard of Chicago, or seen the wonderful movie musical of the same name starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renée Zellweger and Richard Gere, the story is set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s. CHICAGO is the story of Roxie Hart, portrayed by Mercedes Courtoreille, a housewife and nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, played by Amber Lochead, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer, Billy Flynn, performed by Dean Chadwick to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids. Chadwick continues, “With only 12 performances in total, we are expecting sell out crowds for this fan favourite, so please get your tickets early.”

June is a great month for area seniors to get outside and explore some of the region’s most beautiful parks and trails! The crippling heat of summer hasn’t yet arrived and the blooms are still magnificent. Here are a few destinations that have gentle walking trails and wheelchair accessibility. •• Bowen Park, in the heart of Nanaimo, has much to offer the senior visitor and families alike. With a variety of interpretive trails, picnic shelters, a waterfall, a duck pond, resting totem poles and a gorgeous rhododendron grove, it’s easy to spend an hour or a day here •• Neck Point Park is a 1.5 km loop in North Nanaimo off Hammond Bay Road. Mostly wheelchair accessible, it boasts stunning ocean views and peaceful forest trails •• Westwood Lake Park is a favourite summer spot: it boasts 5.51 km’s of gentle-terrain trail around the lake and plenty of benches from which to sit and enjoy the view •• Colliery Dam Park in the Harewood area of Nanaimo is partially wheelchair accessible. It’s 2.5 km of trails feature bridges, mature trees and plenty of great picnic spots •• If area history is of interest, Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park is well worth the drive

27

to the south end of Nanaimo. The groomed 1.2 km of trail features the only remaining coal tipple on Vancouver Island •• Maffeo Sutton Park and the waterfront walkway is one of the nicest outings in Nanaimo! With spectacular views of Nanaimo’s working harbour, numerous flower beds to enjoy, and several cafes and ice cream shops, it’s a great place to while away the day! If early summer has planted the travel bug, ‘Janie’s Bus’ is offering day trips to a host of great destinations both near and far in June. From Nootka Island (June 13) and the Vancouver Harbour Paddle-Wheeler (June 25) to Mount Washington (June 2), Denman and Hornby Islands (June 4), Victoria (June 15) and Tofino (June 20), there’s no reason to stay at home if you have the urge to travel. Let Janie do the driving while you sit back and take in the sites! For more information call 250.214.2855 or visit janiesbus.ca Finally, MGM Restaurant at the south end of downtown Nanaimo is a great gathering place for many, offering live music and dancing five nights of the week starting at 5 pm and chess every Wed night from 7 - 10 pm. Reis Vink plays the accordion every Wed and Thu in June. For more information or to make a reservation call 250.753.3535.

Erin’s Quick Fitness Tips 1. Skipping: with this exercise you can make this as hard or as easy as you want. I love playing with intervals for this one 8 sets of 60second intervals. 2. Medicine ball slams: Medicine ball slams really increase your heart rate and you can pair it with the above if you like. I usually focus on reps rather than seconds with this exercise. 8 – 10 reps per set. Once you get stronger you can always add more 3. Pop Squats: Pop squats are great for working your legs and your glutes. They too can be paired with the two above exercises. I personally like higher reps for this one. 10-20 pop squats per set. 4. Jumping jacks: Jumping jacks are great for getting your whole body moving and just like the above exercises increased heart rate and can be paired with any of the moves above. 20-50 reps per set. 5. Worm walkouts.: Worm walkouts are great again for including your upper body and core. Pair with any of the exercises above. If you are unsure on any of these moves subscribe to my newsletter on my Website www.bodytempo.com and I will include videos with the above exercises and new and free workouts!

In 2013, Bob Falk, Paul Sihota, Derrick Ronkainen, Herbert Brauckmann and Chip Lenton, a group of local businessmen and avid “car guys” decided they wanted to help Nanaimo Hospice with their Expand the Heart of Hospice capital campaign to purchase, renovate and move into a new hospice house. The first show was such a success, they turned into an annual event and six years later – the REDLINER’S CHARITY CAR SHOW has raised over $25,000 for the work of hospice in our community. This popular show has grown every year and this year organizers are expecting over 100 entries to showcase and celebrate their passion around these classic cars, hot-rods, muscle cars and even the odd semi at Country Club Mall – beside Original Joe’s Restaurant. It is because of the support of individuals, businesses & organizations like the Redliner’s Car Club – we can continue to provide support to those struggling with three of life’s most difficult challenges – dying, caregiving and grieving.
