TheatreOne’s Mainstage presents… Person of Interest

Written and performed by Melody A. Johnson Directed by Rick Roberts Thursday to Saturday, February 7-9, 2019 at VIU’s Malaspina Theatre “A play about learning to hate your neighbours instead of yourself.” Inspired by the true story of an event that happened on Johnson’s street in Little Poland, Person of Interest is a one-woman tale of a neighbourly dynamic gone wrong. Horribly, horribly wrong. Typecast as a “housebound loser”, this is the mostly true story of an actor driven to the brink. Person of Interest is storytelling at its best, told simply and skillfully; this original play will strike a chord with anyone who has ever lived, loved or battled with neighbours.

Award winning, celebrated actor and writer Melody A. Johnson returns to Nanaimo with this new solo show. Johnson has performed across stages in both Canada and the United Kingdom with her acclaimed Miss Caledonia. “Laugh-out-loud good times with neighbours from hell in Melody A. Johnson’s quirky, edgy, sharply observed Person of Interest.” Life with More Cowbell Twitter Review

Fitness tip To fall in love with exercise and re-invent yourself you may need to change your outlook. Internalized beliefs about your ability to stick to an exercise regimen can play a role here for sure. It might be a good idea if you start by asking yourself whether you view exercise as a chore. Since we would all agree it is hard to fall in love with doing chores the logical next step is to really work on changing that mind-set. You might try to change your view of exercise-time as more akin to, for example, ‘personal improvement time’ in which you focus on yourself and your desire to become healthier. The next step is to initiate concrete steps toward your goal. Once you begin to see the results,

Check out this diverse selection of films, starting with Puzzle (Jan. 20-21), about a suburban mother who discovers a passion for solving jigsaw puzzles which unexpectedly draws her into a new world! Next is Leave No Trace (Feb. 17-18), the intimate and complex coming-of-age story of a father and daughter struggling to maintain their unconventional lifestyle in the rugged countryside of the US Pacific Northwest. Nothing Like A Dame (Mar. 10-11) features acting icons Dames Eileen Atkins, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright and Maggie Smith as they look back with the wisdom of their years, and with humour! The next film is Capernaum (March 24-25) about

Nothing Like A Dame

a young boy who has seen enough of this life to resent his very existence. Encouraged by a current affairs program seeking to draw attention to child poverty, he files a lawsuit against his parents for giving birth to him. The Silent Revolution (April 7-8) is set in 1956 East Germany, when a group of senior high schoolers demonstrate solidarity with victims of the Hungarian Revolution. Their brief, silent protest ignites underlying tensions and leads to grave consequences. The final film of the season, Woman at War (May 5-6) speaks to social issues with wit and warmth. Halla is a choirmaster who has just been approved to adopt a child from a war-torn area in Ukraine, a longtime dream of hers. Halla is also an eco-terrorist, fueled by the proliferation of heavy industry that has been ruining Iceland’s landscape.

GIFT IDEA: subscribe to all six films for only $67 or $13 each from theatreone.org and 250-754-7587.

PET TIP 5 Tips for caring for your pets feet this winter

Written by Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital

1. The Secret To Polution is Dilution…well maybe not. But it IS the secret for removing salt and other chemicals from your pets’ feet when they’ve been walking on de-icer around the city. Have a water bath by the door to dip your friends feet in before they go in the house and get those nasty chemicals off their feet.

for not KNOWING…keep a close eye on those feet. watch for broken toenails, or cuts from walking on ice. We live in a freeze-thaw environment in the winter, which leads to puddles of water that are partially frozen. These can crack and leave sharp pieces of ice to cut unwary paws.

2. You miss more for not LOOKING then

3. Speaking of partially frozen…keep Fido OFF lakes and rivers that are frozen. It does not get cold enough on the coast to be safe on frozen lakes and rivers. Safe passage over ice requires ice that is 30 cm thick…and we don’t get that cold for long enough. Isn’t that why we live here?

4. To cover or not to cover…Dogs use their feet to regulate their body temperature. Covering their feet can cause dogs to over heat. Having said that, if you are going for long tracks in deep snow, or if Fido has a minor foot injury but still wants to go frolic outside…definitely use foot covers or Muttlucks. I actually carry one or two as part of my hiking kit, that way if there’s a foot injury I can cover the foot right away. 5. The weather outside is frightful…and our dogs aren’t really used to extreme cold being the pampered coastal pups that they are. If your travels this winter take you to somewhere really cold…those feet are going to need extra attention. Dogs will lift their feet and tuck them next to their body if they are getting cold. When you see that, it’s time to get them somewhere warm to thaw those frozen tootsies!

Style Tips by KC’s Boutique

If you’re still struggling finding the right clothes, dive deeper. Are you shopping at the right stores? Are you being closed minded? Does the shop have age appropriate fashions and clothes fit for your lifestyle? Just because your friends shop somewhere or it’s the trendy place to go, doesn’t mean it’s serving you. Take a moment to ask yourself if it’s really the right place for you to shop. Be honest! Are you being closed-minded? Be flexible. Open yourself up to try things that look interesting or catch your eye, even if it’s a departure from what you would normally wear. Step outside your comfort zone and prepare to be rewarded - you never know what you’ll fall in love with until you try it! If you dislike shopping, get frustrated or overwhelmed by the experience, call

Puzzles, Puzzles, Puzzles! Winter evenings are the perfect time for puzzles. With more and more companies offering puzzles, these are a few of our favourites: The Ravensburger company has been making puzzles for over a hundred years. They have developed a solid reputation for their durable puzzles for all ages – from tray puzzles for kids to 2000+ pieces for grownups. Many of our customers like the fact that the puzzles pieces form a vertical / horizontal grid, for easier assembly.

puzzles. Giant knob puzzles introduce the basics of puzzles to little ones. Wood jigsaw puzzles offer a sturdy introduction to multi-piece puzzles without the frustration of bending cardboard. With hundreds of puzzles to choose from, there are many great designs to while away an evening.

Cobble Hill puzzles is a relative newcomer to the market. As the name suggests, they are a local company based out of Victoria! Their range of 275 piece puzzles are great for those with decreasing eyesight or fine motor skills, with larger pieces and grown up designs. A lot of our customers find their 1000 piece puzzles a particular challenge, as they are cut randomly – adding to the challenge. Family Puzzles, by Cobble Hill, are a great innovation that allow multi-age participants to work on a puzzle at the same time. From 350 to 400 pieces, they have three different size pieces. The little ones can be working on one side with the big pieces while the grownups have the small pieces on the opposite side. For younger puzzle enthusiasts, Melissa and Doug make great wooden starter

The Trews have released their sixth studio album, Civilianaires via Cadence Recordings. Civilianaires is the band’s most fearless record yet with personal and political lyrics driven by a refreshing new sound. With multiple radio hits drawn from their previous albums, plus several EPs, a pair of live records, and a retrospective, The Trews are among the most prolific, electrifying, and innovative rock bands. The Nova Scotia-bred, Hamilton/Toronto-based combo of singer/ guitarist Colin MacDonald, guitarist John-Angus MacDonald, bassist Jack Syperek, and drummer Chris Gormley - songwriters all has won universal acclaim for both their dazzling live performances and wildly accessible songs. The Trews approached Civilianaires, their electrifying and wildly original follow-up to 2014’s The Trews, the way a contractor tackles a kitchen reno: tearing things down to the studs, then building out piece by new piece.

“We’re almost in existential-crisis-mode if we don’t have new songs we’re excited about,” guitarist/songwriter John-Angus MacDonald says, “With us it’s always ‘What’s next?’ We’re most galvanized while we’re creating. And this new album is a completely fresh take on what we’ve done before.” Civilianaires features production credits from up and comer Derek Hoffman (The Elwins, Seaway) and the legendary Bob Rock. The band also worked alongside Max Kerman from Arkells, who co-wrote and co-produced the album’s second single “Vintage Love,” along with a co-write with Serena Ryder on the title track. It is your healing home away from home with crystals, books and services offered, Reiki, Tea Leaf & Tarot Card Readings, and Mediumship. It might be difficult to fathom, to believe that this is even possible and that someone like Terry Lynn can be a Medium easily and authentically as she

does. Trust me, I was once a skeptic and have tried my best to “test her”. It is ok to be skeptical, in fact, skeptics are some of Terry Lynn’s favorite clients. Why wouldn’t they be? Terry Lynn says she is so filled up with joy, when she sees a skeptic in front of her, receiving a Reading and hearing a message that they cannot deny as the Truth for them. In my mind, I immediately affectionately see her as a “Detective”, a Divine Detective listening to complete a Spiritual transaction of sorts. An intimate exchange where Terry Lynn is the Messenger and with an Open Mind, you receive the messages. It has been my pleasure to introduce Terry Lynn to you, if you would like to connect with her, you are lucky as there are many options to do so. You can book a Skype/ Video Reading with her, you can tune in to AIR1 Psychic Radio and Moonstruck TV to the “Terry Lynn Boyle Show” on Tuesday’s at 1PM Pacific, you can always pop in and book a reading with her but best of all you will get to meet Terry Lynn, the Vancouver Island Medium.

A woman meant to call a record store, but dialed the wrong number and got a private home instead. “Do you have ‘Eyes of Blue’ and ‘A Love Supreme?’” she asked. “Well, no,” answered the puzzled homeowner. “But I have a wife and eleven children.” “Is that a record?” the caller inquired, puzzled in her turn. “I don’t think so,” replied the man, “but it’s as close as I want to get.”

Escape!

Have you ever wanted to hunt for a lost treasure in an abandoned coal mine? Or rummage around a sorcerer’s study in a Medieval castle? Well, now you can! Brechin Lanes in Nanaimo has two fully immersive escape rooms that allow you to work with your team to solve clues and escape! Escapism Nanaimo’s two rooms are ‘Shafted‘ and ‘The Sorcerer’s Study‘. In Shafted, you have found an old miner’s diary that seems to indicate a lost treasure hidden deep within the booby-trapped mine. The Sorcerer’s Study, the evil sorcerer seems to have stolen the Queen’s priceless amulet. You have just one hour to rifle through the study to expose his treason and win the Queen’s favour. Both rooms have been professionally designed by a company known for assorted design elements at such companies as Legoland, Cabela’s, and The Rainforest Cafe. The immersive nature of Escapism Nanaimo’s rooms will have players feeling like they have walked onto a movie set. Escapism Nanaimo is the first escape room facility in Canada that is located inside a bowling centre. With the installation of these incredible rooms, we have taken entertainment in Nanaimo to the

next level. There truly has never been an attraction of this calibre in Nanaimo…come see for yourself! This exciting new attraction is ideal for birthdays, corporate team building, stag parties – the list goes on! For those who have never experienced an escape room you are in for a treat. MOTHER MOTHER Chart topping alt-rock band Mother Mother announced today the released a new album Dance and Cry November 2018 (Universal Music Canada). The Juno-nominated band debuted their catchy new single, “Get Up” which is currently sitting in the top 15 on the Canadian Alternative Rock chart and was impressively the #1 most added song at Canada Alternative Rock radio in its first week of release.

Lead singer Ryan Guldemond remarked on the new album, “This album was written from a place of wanting to be moved and wanting to move others. At a certain point of the writing process I made a pact with myself that I wouldn’t pursue songs that didn’t either make me want to dance or cry, or ideally both. This ethos catalyzed a broader theme with regards to healing, and how feeling one’s pain and becoming truly intimate, loving and curious with it, is a crucial part of finding your way out of it.” The new record, produced in its entirety by Guldemond and Ben Kaplan goes back to an organic, stripped down sound that reflects the

bands earlier material including their iconic album, O My Heart which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. The songs on Dance and Cry, share themes of survival, self-reflection, sorrow and happiness. In the fall of 2017, Guldemond was going through a difficult breakup, which left him feeling lost and out of touch with himself and his creativity. It was from this place that he began writing, and the initial songs mirrored these emotions. To his taste, things were feeling too morose, like a love-lost album, which he didn’t really want it to be; it is Mother Mother’s penchant to cover broader, multi dimensional themes. To shake things up, Ryan took a trip to Costa Rica to soul search and get inside the music in his head. It was there he found some songs, some individuality, and returned to Vancouver to embark on a twomonth writing spree, employing a monastic lifestyle of meditation, clean living, exercise, and no media. As a result, his channels began to open up, and very honest, inspired songs followed. Dance and Cry is an album about the intrinsic bond between joy and sorrow. It’s an album about gateways; pain entering into peace. The trenches, a portal to the sky. Dancing, an affair with freedom, and crying, a river giving to an ocean of music. Dance and Cry is the band’s seventh full length studio album and follows the 2017 release No Culture which produced the #1 hit single, “The Drugs.” Mother Mother presented by Gee Dan Productions & GotPop? will rock the doors off the Port Theatre Nanaimo Wednesday January 30th 7:30PM
