It’s Alive!

Well, the Puppeteers Are The Port Theatre is proud to present Manual Cinema’s FRANKENSTEIN to Nanaimo as part of our nationally acclaimed Spotlight Series! It’s a special Canadian premiere event. Internationally-renowned multimedia company Manual Cinema stitches together the classic story of Frankenstein with Mary Shelley’s own biography to create an unexpected story about the beauty and horror of creation; combining handmade shadow puppetry, cinematic techniques, and innovative sound and live music to create immersive visual stories for stage and screen. Manual Cinema’s “Frankenstein” is a film-theatre hybrid that fuses Mary Shelley’s novel with her biography, emphasizing themes of desire, birth and loss. “It’s a story about the animation of dead matter,” Drew Dir, a co-artistic director, said. “And as puppeteers, that’s sort of what we do.” The dead matter in question is maybe 18 inches long. Malformed, with one bulging eye, it’s shaped like the kind of rag doll that only a very warped or very lonely child would enjoy. Operated by the puppeteers and filmed with a small camera, it looks larger, ghastlier, something like the “hideous progeny” that Shelley described. When she wrote the book, Shelley had recently lost a newborn and her own mother had died from postpartum complications (scenes the play stages) so progeny was not necessarily a happy or neutral idea. Manual Cinema is a group that works collaboratively. If Dir conceived the piece, he went on to develop it with two of Manual Cinema’s other artistic directors,

Sarah Fornace and Julia VanArsdale Miller. The two other artistic directors, Ben Kauffman and Kyle Vegter, wrote the music. This is a company used to stitching together new works out of disparate parts and pleasantly surprised by what it has made. “A show grows so much,” Miller said. “It becomes more, at least for me, what I had ever imagined.” That sounds a little dangerous. Have any of Manual Cinema creations ever turned on the company that gave them life? “Luckily they can’t animate without us,” Fornace said with a laugh. “Those puppets can’t move without me.” Tales of Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein and his Monster expose how the forces of family, community and education shape personhood – or destroy it by their absence.

Sandra Odgers CFP, FMA, FCSI Investment Advisor & Financial Planner RBC Dominion Securities Inc. Phone: 250.729.3239 Email: sandra.odgers@rbc.com Website: www.sandraodgers.com

As a result of RRSP contributions, interest expenses, tax shelter deductions or various other tax deductions and credits, you may be expecting an income tax refund from CRA. If so, it may be a good opportunity to determine if you can use some or all of it to improve your financial well-being. While you may be tempted to spend your refund on things like a well-deserved vacation or doing a minor renovation to your home, the receipt of an income tax refund can be a great catalyst for you to implement some valuable financial planning strategies such as: • Prepare your Will or Power of Attorney; • Set up an emergency fund; • Put adequate disability or life insurance in place; • Save the refund in an RRSP, RESP or TFSA; • Pay down debt. These and other uses of your tax refund should be considered in the context of a financial plan which looks at your specific circumstances. For a complimentary copy of our recent publication on this topic contact Sandra today. Drawing from decades of experience in educating Canadians on wealth planning, Sandra provides her clients with clarity, insight and partnership.

February is African Heritage Month -

Celebrate Africa

The ecstacy and energy of African Dance - when blended with forms such as Raqs Sharqi Egyptian bellydance or Marrabenta (Mozambique), Hip Hop, Salsa and fitness - reflects the rich cultural diversity and contemporary voice of its artists through fusions such as traditions of Alphonse Tiérou technique or Afrobeat. Crimson Coast Dance honours African Heritage this month with African artists versed in these forms. Each country is as unique as it is varied. Each culture has its own voice, its own dances and songs, qualities and histories. Each artist has experienced a world of influence from neighboring countries, nomadic travelers or their own comings and goings. Listen to their stories and songs about their country at the Vault, Friday, February 21, then embody the celebratory arts of the continent. No experience necessary, just a passion for cultural dance and joy! Tânia Amaral (Mozambique, Southern Africa), is an African dancer, choreographer, teacher, student, Pharmacist, traveler and enthusiastic person. She introduces moves and rhythms, with special emphasis on their value and how to use them through Afro Fusion Belly Dance. This form brings together dance from oriental African countries with the rest of Africa, including Alphonse Tiérou technique, to celebrate unification vs segregation. It is a celebration of the body. Izo Dreamcatcher, Isaac Gasangwa, grew up in Rwanda where dance is not considered an art form. He pioneered the first Afro-Hip Hop dance studio and founded the spectacular dance group, Jabbajunior. With his passion vision he created much good in his country though dance. He has brought that to Canada through his new company, Afrobeats, which invites everyone to express their own life story and feelings through movement. Everyone can dance to African music. The idea is to feel the

music and express yourself.

Born in Paris, Bison was raised in an African environment, Bison, was surrounded by music and dance all his life. With his caring and humourous style and never fading smile, Bison fuses HipHop and Salsa into AfroBeats. Bison’s takes you through Africa with steps and the music of Coupé Décalé (Ivory Coast), Azonto (Ghana), Bikutsi (Cameroon), Ndombolo (Congo). Get in on the fun, self-expression, body awareness, cardio and coordination that are AfroBeats. Produced by Crimson Coast Dance Society

Ken Lavigne has stolen hearts of concert goers across North America with his captivating blend of classical tenor sound and contemporary style. He takes his audience on riveting and exciting adventures with spectacular songs and hilarious stories from his personal experiences. 3 Knights with a Tenor, an admittedly cheeky title, features the music of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sir Paul McCartney, and Sir Elton John. “It’s music I enjoy singing privately and it’s music I don’t get the opportunity to perform outside of my shower,” Ken says from his studio in Chemainus. “What makes these British Knights stand up is that their music still inspires young and old alike and I want to carry on the tradition.” Ken has made a career performing a wide variety of artistic genres - from classical, folk and adult contemporary. Working through bodies of work from one iconic artist, the likes of Elton John for example, would be a daunting enough task on its own. Add two others of the highest calibre and it could be, understandably, over-

whelming. “It was extremely difficult to choose the songs to perform because all three are extremely prolific and they have a mountain of songs,” Ken says. “The conclusion is you want to include them all, but you can’t.” Ken began to see synergies between Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John as work on his new show progressed. “Paul McCartney began writing simple three chord pop songs but evolved into working with the London Symphony. Elton John managed to integrate piano into mainstream rock and Andrew Lloyd Webber created monumental works that are celebrated as nostalgic tipping. For me, learning about their process and what caused them to take the path they did, is inspiring” says Lavigne. Ken has been touring this show across Canada and Washington State and is performing it in Nanaimo as part of the 6th Annual Festival Nanaimo on Thursday March 26th at the Port Theatre.

Remounts Successful Comedy 23 years ago, the Nanaimo Theatre Group produced Ken Ludwig’s brilliant comedy Lend Me A Tenor. It was a great success and worthy of being remounted for our many new patrons to enjoy. The revised script centres around the opera Pagliacci (translation: Clowns); the version done those many years ago featured Othello. This wildly funny play was presented on Broadway and in London’s West End in the mid-eighties where it garnered 3 Tony and 4 Drama Desk Awards. As the lights come up on stage, we are transported to Cleveland Ohio, it is 1934. 5x JUNO nominee/7x Canadian Folk Music Award winning mando-maestro ANDREW COLLINS borrows a page from basic carpentry, hitting the nail on the head with his Trio’s double disc Tongue & Groove 5x JUNO nominee and 7x Canadian Folk Music Award winning mando-maestro Andrew Collins and his fellow Trio string-meisters have borrowed a page from basic carpentry, hitting the nail on the head with their new, double disc (1 all instrumentals, the other all w/ vocals), cleverly called “Tongue & Groove”. You may already know the wildly exploratory Andrew Collins through his work with The Foggy Hogtown Boys, the equally mind-bending Creaking Tree String Quartet or the Trio, itself – but you’ll never put a label on him for his approach to folk, newgrass, jazz and even some chamber-oriented roots music. Showcasing a dizzying number of styles and instruments on stage, Collins and Co. appear to live by the old adage, “idle hands are the devil’s workshop”, likely keeping them just ahead of his grasp. Bending and blending genres, these musical shape shifters land somewhere between the re-imagined worlds of Béla

Andrew’s skills on mandolin, fiddle, guitar, mandola, mandocello and smooth vocals merge with the rich talents of his trio mates Mike Mezzatesta (guitar, mandolin, fiddle, mandola) and James McEleney (bass, mandocello and vocals) and represent a back-to-basics visitation on what the band does best -- spontaneity of the stage and rapid-fire, improvisational exchanges. #1 Canadian artist receiving airplay on Folkdj (out of 14,052 airplays) – Oct 2016 #2 on North American College & Community Radio’s Folk Charts– June 2018 “The level of musicianship is outstanding, as you’d expect from a serial award winner such as Andrew Collins.
