Published for Families and Friends of Chapel Hill Academy

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear CHA Community, What a blessing that God has called each of us to be part of the Chapel Hill Academy community, a ministry established to prepare and equip the next generation of Christian leaders. Along with this great opportunity, we are called to have a tremendous amount of faith and prayer, perseverance and dedication, discernment and diplomacy, and most of all, a true heart for children. As administrators, teachers, parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends, we are called to educate children according to the Bible. This mandate comes directly from the Word: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. Deuteronomy 6:4-7(ESV) Bringing the Word of God to the hearts of children provides a pathway for them to become followers of Christ. We want to help children learn how to reason with biblical principles for lifelong discipleship. Educating children to think like Christ brings the Gospel from this generation to the next. The goal of training young people to serve Christ is the most important thing we can do as a Christian community. If our children learn to base their decisions on the Bible, they have the means to become Christian leaders in their generation. Christian leadership is essential to preserving our nation’s liberty and our Christian heritage. As a Christian community, we are part of this exciting mission—you are already a part of the ministry to "train children the way they should go.” We are blessed to be in community together for this divine purpose. This edition of CHA Magazine focuses on community--in fellowship, in service, and in learning. May you find these pages reflecting the true essence of Christian community and discipleship as we serve God and others. Thank you for your partnership in this community effort of instilling a passion for Christ and a strong education for life in the hearts and minds of our children.

Craig Schafer teaches 6th grade Bible, 7th grade world history, and 8th grade U.S. history. He and his wife, Mary, live in Chanhassen with their two Miniature Schnauzers, Smuckers and Jiffy. In his spare time, Mr. Schafer likes to work out with his wife and play with his dogs. He also likes to play golf, frisbee golf, tennis, and basketball. Although he was born and raised in Minnesota, Mr. Schafer is a true Nebraska Cornhusker fan. Mr. Schafer's passion in life is to learn more and more about God every day and to reveal God's love to every student he crosses paths with.

Katleyn Freitas is a great addition to CHA. She teaches 6th Grade Language Arts and Study Skills teacher. She and her husband, Zachariah, have a Labradoodle named Tucker and live in Waconia. She and her husband take part in the young adults ministry at Freshwater (Waconia campus), and Katelyn is a vocalist on the worship team there. Katelyn is excited to help equip students to view literature through a biblical perspective, and she is grateful for the opportunity to integrate her passion for teaching and her passion for Christ in her career.

Rafaela Fiallos is CHA’s new elementary Spanish intern. She is from Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Her two sisters and parents reside in Honduras. She has a passion for interceding for the nations and leads the Prayer ministry at Crown College. In her summer time, she has enjoyed working with missionaries in Honduras translating for them in social projects for the expansion of the gospel. Miss Fiallos is excited to make a huge difference in the lives of the students this year by bringing global awareness of what is happening in her country and the whole world.

Lisel Stempel came to CHA in October to teach third grade. She is a native of the southwestern suburbs, and the oldest of four children. She loves pets and has an orange cat named Knightley. When she is not teaching, she enjoys reading, cooking, and exercising. Aside from teaching, Lisel has worked many summers at a Bible camp, and continues to volunteer in children’s ministry at her church. This is her 7th year of teaching since graduating from Northwestern College (UNWSP), and has taught every grade from 1st through 4th grade. Lisel is excited to help the 3rd grade class live up to the potential God has placed inside each one.

cha students & families serving

A

t our recent CHA Missions Chapel, we heard from students who recounted their experience as they served in a community beyond our borders, Callao, Peru. These students were part of a group that included more than a dozen current and former Chapel Hill Academy students and parents who traveled this past summer to share the Gospel during a week-long missions trip. This group joined with others from a local church to partner with the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Callao, Peru. The Christian Missionary Alliance Church is committed to demonstrating the power of prayer to fuel their purpose: bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ to Peru.

Missions

The group traveling included a medical team, including CHA parents Robert and Navina Jones, who took their talents right to the people of Peru. Navina, a dentist, was able to teach mothers and children about caring for their often stained and rotting teeth, but more importantly, she was able to share the Gospel with many very ill people. Those who received the message did so in a way that reflects the woman at the well; they were so thirsty for this living water that even their significant medical needs faded into the background. Along with their parents, Robert and Navina, CHA alum Sydney and her 7th grade sister, Lauren, served in various capacities including sharing the message of Salvation. Lauren found the experience life changing. When the kids opened their mouths for her to swab fluoride on their teeth, she could visually see cavities, whereas in the United States, most cavities are caught when they are tiny or only visible on an x-ray. “Huge, black holes were in their teeth!” she exclaimed. She also visited people in their homes with her parents to share their faith, and she was amazed by the dirt found everywhere – on the floors, in the kitchen, layered on every surface – and the tiny living spaces. One small girl came to the clinic to see Robert Jones, a doctor of sports medicine. She needed orthopedic work because her broken arm was not properly set months before. Lauren said, “She never complained. It was really painful – you could see her wince when my dad touched her arm – but she didn’t say anything or cry.” This led Lauren to understand that for those in poverty, life contains physical pain that Americans rarely experience. Her heart was moved by their difficulties. Lauren’s open heart led her to share her faith with some of the children who came to the clinic. Spelling out

words in Spanish, using the translators, and drawing pictures on the ground, she presented the Gospel. One little girl with pigtails caught her eye because she seemed lonely. Lauren knew the girl needed a friend who would be with her long after the team left, so she shared Jesus’ love and led the little girl in a prayer of Salvation. Robby Pettit, CHA 7th grader, shared many of Lauren’s experiences on the trip. He served with the student ministry team consisting of about 50 students and adults who played sports in parks. Their strategy was to draw a crowd for whom they would sing and perform skits that delivered the Good News about Christ. Continued on next page... 6 | CHA Magazine

in the community and beyond... We will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the Word .” Acts 6:4

Robby’s favorite ministry tool was face paint. He brought an inexpensive kit of paints, and children flocked around him asking for flags, stars, hearts and their names on their cheeks. He compared the Peruvian children to the kids he worked with at VBS but noted that the kids in Peru were much more respectful. One of the CHA students traveling in group shared that the most important lesson he learned is that the power of Jesus to change lives is transforming. From the moment people accepted Christ, he could see on their faces “a total change.” He also discovered that once he got over his initial fear of sharing the Gospel, he had the confidence to continue sharing with more people. Robby summarized what many of the students said they learned in Peru: 1) Trips help people understand cultures and care about others more, especially people in physical and spiritual poverty. 2) The bond we share by loving Christ connects people across ages and languages, and it is incredible to serve alongside other Christians. 3) Mission trips bring significant spiritual growth for the people serving on the trip and for those who are served. The many current and former CHA students and parents who served 4,000 miles away in Peru expressed their appreciation for the instruction and encouragement they received from Chapel Hill Academy.

CHA Students Support Miracles for Mitch By Mr. Becker

This past August, several Chapel Hill Academy students participated in one of the most inspirational kids’ events held right in our own backyard, the Miracles for Mitch Triathlon. The event which is held at Lake Ann Park in Chanhassen is such an incredible opportunity for so many reasons, the most important being that it's all about kids. It is the kids raising money, it is the kids raising awareness, it is the kids pushing themselves physically, and it is the kids carrying out a pinky swear that a young boy battling cancer made with his parents many years ago. So often a competition such as a triathlon can become all about self, but this event puts the emphasis on selflessness. This year, the kids alone raised over $700,000! Every cent of that money goes directly to assist families with a child who is battling cancer. In 2013, we had 17 Chapel Hill Academy students participate. This year was amazing! We had 30 CHA triathletes, and they raised over $11,000! Our CHA goal for the August, 2015, Miracles for Mitch event is increasing our participation to 40 Chapel Hill Academy students. That may seem ambitious, but I know we can do it. I look forward to having more and more CHA students participate in this exciting, life-changing event for years to come! The following is a list of our 2014 participants who swam, biked, ran, and raised money for the awesome cause of helping families deal with childhood cancer: Sarah Johnson, Leeza Johnson, Isabelle Bergstrom, Nasya Ramli, Jayden Schmeig, Olivia Wilson, Emily Wilson, Charlie Tucker, Josiah Bearder, Maia Powell, Caleb Beckering, Bennet Beckering, Claire Duncan, Ava McIntosh, Mariah Reynolds, Gabby Antonovich, Annika Anfinrud, Lauren Phillips, Michael Phillips, Stephen Phillips, Caroline Wilhite, Ava Boarder, Caden Winters, Lucia Gavin, Mason Farrell, Payton Farrell, Alec Threinen, Kaitlyn Vaigle, and Drake Dobbs

love god. love others. Middle school advisory groups spent a day this fall serving at nine different non-profits or senior residences in the western suburbs. Teams raked leaves, cleaned, organized shelves, played BINGO with seniors, baked cookies and sang for the residents. Students enjoyed serving others and working together on a beautiful fall day. Everyone had so much fun that it was difficult to tell who received more joy from the experience, the seniors or the middle school students.

worship with our community

CHA Hosts First Community Worship Night On October 10, we held our first Community Worship Night--what a blessing it was to come together as a community, filling the auditorium and worshipping Jesus together. Thank you to all the volunteers, business partners, musicians and families who helped make this event a huge success. We are blessed to have these kinds of opportunities, and we look forward to many more in the future. Through these events, we hope to build a community of worshipers hungry for a deeper understanding and love for Jesus. Our prayer for our school and surrounding community is that the Holy Spirit reveals Christ to everyone gathered, helps us sing and pray with a passion for Christ, and brings forth fruit in people’s lives. We look forward to our next opportunity to worship together!

his fall, Mrs. Willett’s class had the opportunity to welcome some very special guests to their classroom: Dave Clutter and Keith Stevens from 98.5 FM KTIS. Their mission was to record the children reciting their Pledge of Allegiance and broadcast it across the state of Minnesota. The children actually recited all three pledges (Bible, Christian Flag, American Flag) for the KTIS folks; the students did a wonderful job, and the visitors loved hearing them recite each one.

For the next few days, the adorable 2nd grade voices of CHA rang through the airways for all to enjoy! Dave and Keith spent some time talking with the students about the value of going to a Christian school where they learn and grow in Christ. They also talked about their jobs at KTIS and asked the children to share their future career goals. Some of the children have very unique and exciting ideas--get ready parents! At the end of their time together, Dave and Keith posed for pictures with the class. It was a sweet time of fellowship with two men whose voices we hear on the radio every day. We were blessed by the KTIS visit and honored that they chose CHA to share the Pledge of Allegiance with their listeners.

The Mears family has a passion for Christian Education and Chapel Hill has been a blessing to their family since they moved to Minnesota in 2011. When talking about the family's service to CHA, Marc is quick to mention that Jay is the real servant in the family as she dedicates much more time than he ever could to help wherever she is needed.

experience kindergarten

K

indergarten started off with a real “bang” this year! Visiting the fire station and riding in a big fire truck are exciting events in the life of a kindergarten student! Each fall, CHA “kinders” have the privilege of riding to the Chanhassen Fire Station in one of their emergency vehicles. The Fire Chief teaches them about the job of fire fighters and explains fire safety in a way that is “kinder-friendly.” They use a fire hose to put out a pretend fire and look at all the fancy gear that fire fighters use. This unique experience is just a sample of the fun our students have during their first fall at CHA. Transitioning to a school setting and formalized instruction is a process that looks different for each child. Mrs. Singer, Mrs. Thompson, and Mrs. Ensminger make sure that each child feels safe and secure so he or she can learn and grow. Many of the children entered kindergarten just knowing letters and numbers. Now, the students are reading words and putting sentences together! Children are making new friends, learning how to work cooperatively in groups, and developing their unique skills and abilities. A parent recently shared how they were moved by their child’s development at CHA… We recently sat down to read a couple books to our son. Instead of having us read them to him he asked if he could read the books to us! We were so amazed, he read each of the books to us! His development in such a short time was so encouraging. We are so thankful that our son can be in such a great environment with with high quality teaching and care. One of the favorite parts of the kindergarten day is Bible class. Children are learning about the characteristics of God as He reveals Himself through the Bible. Students are learning to pray together, and they are memorizing the ABC verses of Scripture. Many adults have commented on how wonderful the little ones are doing in chapel each week. They are learning how to listen and participate in worship with great enthusiasm! Kindergarten parents who are going through a very difficult circumstance recently shared their daughter’s encouragement to them: “She said something she could do is pray and request prayer at school.” She had learned to bring her worries and concerns to her Heavenly Father and was accustomed to praying together as a class. Reading – Writing – Math – Bible Spanish – STEM and more!

experience cha worship

G

reetings CHA families, friends, and prospective families,

I am very excited to invite you to our weekly chapel. Each week students gather for worship in the auditorium. Our chapel worship is a time that we can learn to unite our hearts together as we offer a sacrifice of praise to God. It is a chance for us to make time in our day to focus on Jesus and give Him worship. It us a time for us to give Him thanks and praise for all He has done and continues to do for us every day. My hope is that we can grow together as a community of believers learning to make Him the focus of our lives. The students will experience a time of worship through songs led by myself and our worship team. It is our goal to lay down a musical foundation for worship and act as a compass pointing straight to Christ during the 15 to 20 minutes we spend singing together. When we worship, the Holy Spirit reveals and deepens our understanding of our Savior. I see the Holy Spirit transform our chapels each year, bringing a new sense of freedom through singing, reflecting, and physical expression in worship. I cannot wait to Passion for Christ. see what God has in store for the hearts of our students and their growth in worship. Please join us for future chapel experiences. We look forward to seeing you,

Mr. Zink

students & families love cha “STEM is an amazing program which allows students to not only learn, but also to experience the curriculum. Instead of just listening and taking notes, in STEM we have many labs and experiments that are a great way to help us understand better. We really see how God has designed our world to work and how we can apply our learning to the real world. Another benefit of STEM is that instead of just answering questions or just asking someone else to give an answer up front and quickly without us even working for it, we have to think deeper to find and construct our answers. This helps us learn how to do things individually or in a group. Furthermore, when we construct our answer, we can much easier recall "[My son] came bounding into the house what it was, because we came up with it today proclaiming that he is having the ourselves, rather than a friend, the best year of his life, and his teachers are writer of a textbook, or an old scientist. GREAT! My heart is SO full of gratitude Like I was saying before, in the end it's for you “awesome" teachers! You are truly OUR answer, which I would say is helping this kid (and many others I am much more valuable than someone else’s certain!) have the best year ever.” rewritten and reiterated thoughts.” We love our school, and are so thankful for the Christ-centered education they Hudson B. (CHA Student) receive from Christ-centered “awesome” teachers!

C

hapel Hill Academy students LOVE their grandparents!

It is a very special privilege to welcome and honor CHA grandparents to school each October. On this day, students celebrate the gift of love and enduring legacy that grandparents provide for our families and school. To begin the formal program, Mr. Zink and our entire student body treated grandparents and special family guests to a beautiful musical performance.

Grandparents Day at CHA

During the closing song, grandparents joined in singing "How Great Thou Art" with their grandchildren. It was overwhelming to hear the mix

of generational voices come together in praise and worship. Following the music, our parent emcees shared an endearing video presentation that highlighted several students' thoughts and feelings about their grandparents. The program was incredible, and it was wonderful to see the auditorium completely filled with so many grandparents, some who traveled over 2,000 miles to attend! Throughout the event, grandparents enjoyed refreshments and a time of fellowship with other grandparents; many had a great time reconnecting with grandparents they had met at previous Grandparents' Day celebrations. The most important part of the day, however, was the special time grandparents spent with their grandchildren in their classrooms. This year, some of the classroom activities included working on STEM projects, learning about bird houses, watching classroom plays, and sharing school day stories from their own childhood. This is truly a memorable time for our students and their families. Both young and old agree, Grandparents' Day is a favorite at Chapel Hill Academy!

CHA Alumni News Congratulations to Zach and Rachel Vadnais on the birth of their son, Ethan James. W

e love our sports at Chapel Hill Academy! It is great to be part of a community that encourages and supports character and values for our players, parents, and coaches. This fall we were busy with volleyball and soccer for kids in grades 4-8. Our gym was active with seven volleyball teams, and we also had three soccer teams as well. CHA has been blessed with so many wonderful Christian coaches who have been training our athletes both spiritually and physically through sports. We are setting our standards very high for our families again this year when it comes to our character. It is our hope that CHA families will be a light around the community as we compete against other schools in our league. We strive to help our athletes gain a better understanding of their purpose and what God wants from their lives by teaching our G.L.O.R.I.F.Y curriculum. (Godly Lessons On Reflecting Integrity For Youth) This fall, we taught four character traits including encouragement, communication, godliness, and contentment. In the winter season we will continue with six more character traits. It is a great blessing to see how Christ-like character is instilled in our athletes as they compete throughout the season!

Cougars Win! This fall the seventh and eight grade girls took first place in the South Suburban Youth Organization Volleyball Tournament and went on to defeat Transfiguration from Oakdale to with the Twin Cities Championship match. Way to go Cougars! Continuing the successful run, the two sixth grade girls volleyball teams played each other for the championship match, taking first and second place in the South Suburban Youth Organization Volleyball tournament. Congratulations on a great season!
