LIZ CHENEY

TONIGHT’S SPEAKER

LIZ CHENEY SERVED AS THE UNITED STATES REPRESENTATIVE for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district from 2017 - 2023. She chaired the House Republican Conference — the third-highest position in the House Republican leadership — from 2019 - 2021, and was vice chair of the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol. She was also a member of the House Armed Services Committee, China Task Force, Natural Resources Committee, and the House Committee on Rules. Cheney previously served at the State Department as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, as well as in positions for USAID and the Department of State working in Poland, Hungary, Russia, and Ukraine. Prior to this, Cheney practiced law with White & Case LLP and the International Finance Corporation. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colorado College and a Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago Law School.

WE CAN’T GIVE POWER TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE TOLD US THEY WON’T RESPECT THE OUTCOME OF ELECTIONS. THAT’S MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY PARTY BELIEF. IT’S MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY POLICY.

Cheney is a specialist in national security and foreign policy. She and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, co-authored the 2015 book “Exceptional: Why the World Needs a Powerful America.” Her memoir, “Oath and Honor,” was released in December 2023. In 2021, Cheney was selected for the inaugural Forbes “50 Over 50” list and was included in TIME magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2022, Cheney, along with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, received the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library’s prestigious Profile in Courage Award, with a commendation for her “consistent and courageous voice in defense of democracy.” Cheney was appointed a professor of practice at the University of Virginia Center for Politics in March 2023.

MELODY C. BARNES TONIGHT’S MODERATOR

AS THE FOUNDING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR of the University of Virginia’s Karsh Institute of Democracy, Melody Barnes guides the organization on an action-oriented path to realizing democracy in both principle and practice. Barnes is a dedicated public servant with more than 25 years of experience crafting public policy. She served in the administration of former President Barack Obama as assistant to the president and director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. Earlier in her career, Barnes was executive vice president for policy at the Center for American Progress and chief counsel to the late Senator Ted Kennedy on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. Barnes started her career in New York as an associate at Shearman & Sterling. Barnes earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she graduated with honors in history, and her juris doctor from the University of Michigan. In addition to her role at the Karsh Institute, Barnes is the J. Wilson Newman Professor of Governance at UVA’s Miller Center of Public Affairs, a distinguished fellow at UVA’s School of Law, and co-founder of the domestic-policy strategy firm MB2 Solutions. She serves on the boards of directors of several corporate, nonprofit, and philanthropic organizations, including the advisory board of the Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University. A native of Richmond, she was a member of the Jefferson-Huguenot-Wythe High School speech & debate team. Barnes resides in the city with her husband, Marland Buckner. They are supporters of The Richmond Forum.

QUINTON JONES

TONIGHT’S MUSICIAN

QUINTON JONES, A POWERHOUSE RECORDING ARTIST, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, believes “music is a means of expressing oneself, with the only limitations being what you set.” He prides himself on defying traditional genre labels. Jones has provided musical accompaniment for legendary musicians in the Richmond community and beyond. They include Mr. Hannon Lane, Mr. James “Saxsmo” Gates, Dr. Weldon Hill, and Mr. Rodney “The Soul Singer” Stith. Given the breadth of his musical expertise and camaraderie, it’s no wonder Jones has a knack for assembling groups of like-minded musicians. The result is a series of natural and exalted experiences in musical fellowship. Jones has brought his many friends to perform with him on his own sets at the 2nd Street Festival, The Roots Jam, and In Your Ear Studio’s Shockoe Sessions Live. Fusing influences from pop, EDM, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, gospel, and more, this genre-bending musician delivers everything from singing to rapping. At the core of these expressions lies a common denominator: Quinton Jones.

New places transport us beyond our ordinary lives. Inviting us to hear and see and taste and smell. Opening our minds. Lifting our hearts. Enriching our souls.

A LOOK AT CHENEY’S CAREER

FROM WYOMING TO D.C. AND BACK AGAIN (AND AGAIN) MUCH OF LIZ CHENEY’S LIFE has been spent between Casper, Wyoming, where generations of her family have lived since 1852, and Washington, D.C. Throughout her childhood, her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, exposed her to the inner workings of the federal government as he served as chief of staff for President Gerald Ford (1975 - 1977) and as U.S. representative for Wyoming’s at-large district (1979 - 1989), an office she would one day hold. Take a look at highlights from Liz Cheney’s decades-long career serving the people of Wyoming and the nation. 1988

Cheney graduates from Colorado College and begins her career working for the Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development.

2000

George W. Bush and Dick Cheney win the presidential election. Liz Cheney assists their campaign, as well as their successful 2004 reelection campaign.

2008

Cheney joins Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign as a senior foreign policy adviser.

2016

Cheney is elected to Wyoming’s at-large district seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

2018

Cheney is reelected to her House seat. On November 14, the Republican membership elects her chair of the House Republican Conference. In this post, she is the third-ranking Republican in the chamber.

JANUARY 12, 2021

After the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, Cheney announces she will vote to impeach then-President Donald Trump. She is one of 10 Republicans to vote for his impeachment.

MAY 12, 2021

Cheney is removed from her position as Republican Conference chair by voice vote at a closed-door meeting.

FEBRUARY 4, 2022

The Republican National Committee called the events of January 6, 2021, “legitimate political discourse” and overwhelmingly voted to censure Cheney and Representative Adam Kinzinger for taking part in the House investigation of the attack on the Capitol.

AUGUST 16, 2022

Cheney loses her Congressional seat to Harriet Hageman in the Wyoming Republican primary election. In her concession speech, she states, “Our republic relies upon the goodwill of all candidates for office to accept honorably the outcome of elections... This primary election is over, but now the real work begins.”

1996

Cheney receives her J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School. She begins practicing as an international law attorney at White & Case LLP in Washington, D.C.

2002

Liz Cheney is appointed deputy assistant secretary of state in the Department of State’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs (NEA). In 2005, she is promoted to principal deputy assistant secretary.

2013

Cheney launches her campaign for the U.S. Senate in Wyoming, challenging three-term incumbent Republican Mike Enzi. She withdraws her bid six months later due to health issues in her family.

NOVEMBER 4, 2020

Cheney is reelected to serve a third term in Congress and a second term as the Republican Conference chair.

NOVEMBER 20, 2020

Former President Donald Trump loses the presidential election and makes claims of widespread voter fraud. Cheney issues an official statement urging him to back up these claims with evidence, saying, “If the president cannot prove these claims or demonstrate that they would change the election result, he should fulfill his oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States by respecting the sanctity of our electoral process.”

JULY 1, 2021

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announces Cheney will serve on the newly formed House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol. In September, Cheney is named the committee’s vice chair. She is one of only two Republicans on the panel.

JUNE 9, 2022

The January 6 committee holds its first prime-time hearing. Cheney, who features prominently throughout the hearing, states in her opening remarks that “President Trump summoned the mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack.”

MENDING A DIVIDED NATION

CAN AMERICANS MOVE PAST POLITICAL POLARIZATION? “Hyperpartisanship — and the social divisions that drive it — are undermining Americans’ ability to come together across lines of differences to devise solutions to common problems. From a stalemated Congress, to local school boards embroiled in conflict, to families and friends torn apart, these dynamics touch every part of our lives and threaten the very core of our democracy.” From Beyond Conflict’s report “Renewing American Democracy: Navigating A Changing Nation” POLARIZATION IN THE U.S. IS AT A HISTORIC HIGH. Partisan divisions are wider than they were a few decades ago, and many Americans hold deeply negative views of those on the “other side” of their own politics. Americans are skewing their political opinions further to the left and right. They are less likely than in the past to hold mixed political values. According to a Pew Research Center study, only one-third of Americans have a roughly equal number of conservative and liberal positions, compared to nearly half of Americans in 2004. Distribution of the public on a 10-item scale of political values

Republicans and Democrats seem to agree on very little, but voters may be less ideologically polarized on real-world policy ideals than they think. Even though stricter gun control laws are often viewed as a liberal stance, 45% of Republicans support banning high-capacity ammunition magazines, and nearly as many (42%) support banning assault-style weapons. Perhaps more significant is that the two parties share in their frustration with the current state of politics and political discourse. When asked to use a word or phrase to sum up their feelings about politics, 79% of people use negative or critical words, with “divisive” and “corrupt” coming up most frequently. Nearly two-thirds of Americans (65%) say they always or often feel exhausted when thinking about politics, while 55% feel angry. A growing share of the public dislikes both political parties. Nearly a third (28%) express unfavorable views of both parties, the highest share in three decades of polling. A comparable share of adults (25%) do not feel well-represented by either party. Eighty-six percent of Americans say the following is a good description of politics: “Republicans and Democrats are more focused on fighting each other than on solving problems.” Source: Various Pew Research Center studies conducted in 2023

Positive views of governmental and political institutions are at an all-time low. In 2023, only 16% of Americans said they trust the government to do what is right always or most of the time. This is the lowest measured level of trust in the past 60 years. Sixty-three percent of people express not too much or no confidence at all in the future of the U.S. political system. Experts say that growing distrust coarsens public debate, produces policy gridlock, shrinks capacity for goodwill, and harms personal relationships. An increasing majority of Americans (61%) say that having political conversations with people they disagree with is generally “stressful and frustrating.” Despite this, people all along the political spectrum fear that we are growing further apart, and that we are losing the capacity to find common ground and solve our shared problems. We want to move past polarization, but where do we begin?

Across the country, organizations and strategic initiatives have emerged to solve this crisis through community events and facilitated conversations. One Small Step (OSS) is one of those initiatives. It brings together strangers with different political views to record a 50-minute conversation — not to debate politics, but to learn about who they are as people. Created by the nonprofit organization StoryCorps, OSS is an effort to reduce political polarization by reminding the country of the humanity in all of us, including those with whom we disagree. The initiative was first introduced locally by StoryCorps founder and president, Dave Isay, when he spoke at The Richmond Forum in 2020 as part of the “How Our Stories Connect Us” program. OSS is currently focused in four “model communities” across the country, including Richmond where more than 500 conversations have been conducted. To date, more than 4,800 people in 40 U.S. states have taken part. To learn more or sign up to participate locally, visit takeonesmallstep.org/richmond. In 2023, OSS was expanded to Congressional members and senior staff to illuminate the threats of toxic polarization and foster crosspartisan connection. During his OSS Congress conversation, U.S. Representative Blake Moore of Utah said, “If we don’t dialogue, we’ll never accomplish what the founders intended us to do — to find ways to solve problems and move forward.”

TIPS FOR PRODUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS ACROSS THE POLITICAL DIVIDE 1.

Refrain from using any harmful or derogatory language.

2.

Share the time equally.

3.

Don’t interrupt each other.

4. Don’t make assumptions about your conversation partner or their beliefs. 5.

Speak for yourself and about your own experiences. Do not try to represent an entire party or belief system.

6. Respect each other’s differences. Do not try to persuade each other.

SPEECH & DEBATE WE ALL GIVE BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY IN DIFFERENT WAYS. Whether you have donated to the Ralph F. Krueger Jr. Memorial Fund or the Richmond Forum Speech & Debate Initiative, or you have dedicated your valuable time to provide feedback to local students at RFSDI tournaments, tonight we thank you for your generosity. Hear from two RFSDI volunteers about why they give back to speech & debate programs.

I love working with students to offer them feedback on their speech & debate events. Debating allows students to think on their feet and expand logic and reasoning skills in a way that will help them through their lives. Whether they are experienced debaters or first-timers, I get to help them hone an essential skill set. Watching students grow throughout the season is amazing to witness! I have never participated in speech & debate before, but I was hooked after my first tournament. I love watching students craft arguments, and how passionate they become when speaking. My favorite category to judge is Lincoln-Douglas debate. It’s always interesting to hear compelling arguments for both sides of relevant issues.

Joanne Simms Joanne is an educator for the Maymont Foundation.

I do not have any prior speech & debate experience. As a corporate leader, I present to groups on a regular basis. This is a skill that has taken me years to get comfortable with and, in hindsight, I wish I had been involved in speech & debate in high school and college to build a foundation. I love the opportunity to give back to our community through this work. In 2022 and 2023, I coached an agile team focused on our engagement and support of HBCUs, which led to an invitation to judge at the HBCU National Speech & Debate Competition. It was such an educational experience. I wanted to stay active and got involved with The Richmond Forum’s high school speech & debate program. The students are all so motivated and talented! It has been an enlightening and humbling experience to work with them. It is an honor to engage and help our future leaders. I am inspired by the students’ passion and have learned a lot through the process.”

Roberta “Bobbi” Hart Bobbi is a senior manager of product innovation at Altria where she also leads Altria’s Women’s Employee Resource Group.

WISH US LUCK! We are getting into playoff season. Please join us in wishing our regional teams luck as they compete at the Virginia High School League competitions and the National Speech & Debate Association 2024 National Qualifiers. We’ll update you about our students’ success!

JOEL SARTORE

AT THE RICHMOND FORUM JANUARY 13, 2024 FOR 17 YEARS, JOEL SARTORE HAS TRAVELED THE WORLD to photograph thousands of species for The Photo Ark, his ambitious initiative to document every animal in human care. In the process, Sartore has been mobbed by a gang of mischievous spider monkeys, nearly lost a finger to a camera-shy hornbill, and even contracted a flesh-eating parasite in pursuit of the perfect shot — all on a mission to make the world care that Earth’s biodiversity is in grave peril. Sartore added Virginia to his list of global destinations on January 13, 2024, to address The Richmond Forum. His engagement, “Boarding the Photo Ark,” captivated the Forum audience with stunning images and humorous anecdotes that brought color and context to his stories from behind the lens. “I tell these stories to try to get people to care,” Sartore said. Since the beginning of his endeavor in 2006, Sartore’s stories and photographs have proven to do just that. Many vulnerable species have been saved from extinction as a result. “We have a lot to celebrate: the Mexican grey wolf, the California condor, the whooping crane, the black-footed ferret, and the Vancouver Island marmot. These animals were all down to fewer than two dozen,” he said. “They’re not completely out of the woods, but they are certainly safe for now.” In 2023, the 15,000th species boarded The Photo Ark. The federally endangered Miami tiger beetle dwells primarily in the Pine Rocklands ecosystem of southern Florida, a portion of which was slated to be demolished to make way for a new water park. The publicity around the Ark’s milestone drew attention to the beetle and its impending demise. Sartore revealed that a few weeks ago, the development plans were scrapped in response to community pressure.

Although Sartore has successfully advocated for the protection of many species, not every story he told had a happy ending. He shared photos of several animals that have been declared extinct in the time since he captured their likeness, including Toughie, the last remaining Rabbs’ fringe-limbed treefrog, who died in 2016. According to Sartore, between 30 and 40% of amphibians could vanish within the next few years if swift action isn’t taken.

ENGAGING, PASSIONATE AND FUNNY. I BELIEVE MR. SARTORE HAS INSPIRED MANY OF US IN THE AUDIENCE TO MAKE OUR OWN POSITIVE MARK ON THE FRAGILE EARTH. - Forum Subscriber The northern white rhinoceros is also close to extinction. Only two remain on the planet – a mother and daughter pair living at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. “What will we do when those go extinct?” Sartore asked. “We’ll write some editorials and we’ll be sad a little bit, but then the Kardashians will do something crazy and that’ll wash that away.” Even in the face of loss, Sartore is “as hopeful as can be that we can turn this around and get people to start caring.” Most of these species can be saved as long as action is taken quickly, he said. Sartore brought the evening to a close by sending the Forum audience back into the world with a call to join him on his mission. “All you’ve got is that dash between the numbers on your tombstone. Don’t you want to do something that makes the world a better place? I know I do. If we had a room this big with this many people who all of a sudden were on fire to save the planet, could we make a dent? You bet we could! Let’s get to work.”
