Yes, keep those 59-day dogs on a leash hospital Dear Editor, Re: “Letters: Off-leash dogs in Richmond can net heavy fines,” Online, Nov. 13 I agree with the letter writer. I have a reactive dog that is very small and is afraid of everything. Every day I walk him and regularly we encounter dogs off the leash. I am training him to be less reactive, but it’s tough when we have to deal with dogs that approach us without an owner. One of the worst places for off-leash dogs is behind Steveston Community Centre on the path. The irony is that there is a brand new dog park that is fenced-in to the north of the path. However, a lot of people think that the woods and field next to the dog park are off-leash parks — they are not.

Some owners are more responsible than others and when they see a dog on a leash, they put their dog on the leash. Others are oblivious and feel entitled. I have no trouble with the dog in the wagon being off the leash as she can’t walk. However, I do take issue with the other dogs that are chasing each other in the wooded areas and spilling onto the walkway where there are children, buggies, and elderly people from Wisteria and Maple residences, some with walkers. There are other people, too, who are being law-abiding with their dogs on leash. Let’s be considerate, Richmondites, and keep dogs on their leashes, unless they are in an official off-leash park.
Dear Editor, After a 59-day stay at Richmond General Hospital, I would just like to say thank you so much to the dedicated hospital staff. From nurses, care aides, doctors, catering, custodial, nursing students and anyone I may have missed, I’m truly grateful and thankful. I will always speak highly of your kindness and professionalism. Without you, there would be no Richmond General Hospital. Where would we or I be then? Thank you and be safe.

More shelter space needed in Richmond Dear Editor, Not sure if you’re aware of how many folks are being turned away from the the extreme weather services. Tonight at Turning Point, staff said, “It’s filled up in 10 minutes!” This is a really good example of the the lack of capacity and services for Richmond’s most vulnerable. There are no meals on weekend and not enough food to feed all who attend the drop-in either. By 12:34 p.m., there was almost nothing left. Today, two men from out east who got stuck here like me. They have a rule, they do not go downtown in a city they do not know. Richmond became their support. So Richmond has provided for them today and will do so for the next few days. They luckily were not turned away at the door tonight. Yesterday was the same thing — many people were turned away. The staff have been friendly and they
have filled this place to its capacity with compassion. Having to say “no” and turn people to the cold really does hurt. Without the support of the city, they can only do so much! The city is in need of a healthy investment into health outcomes and funds for a bigger building, something more “durable,” that can handle the amount of folks seeking a place to rest. The city could work with its partners to build capacity and mobilize the skills offered by this community, inspiring people to be the leader. Offer more donations: food, selfcare, hygiene and snacks. A community kitchen to inspire a healthy livstyle, offering community meals every day of the week. You have an issue — how are you going to address it?

Harbour takes companies to court over rent dispute and they only started to pay “in a timely manner” after SHA issued the letter asking them to remove their ships. However, they continue to use the premises without valid licences, said SHA. “The (ships) and associated gear remain at the (SHA’s) Property, and (Cadwallader) has informed the (SHA) there is no intention of removing the (ships) and/or associated gear from the (SHA’s) Property,” reads the notice of civil claim. SHA argued the ships and the gear are trespassing on its property. It asked the court to issue a permanent injunction to ban the ships and their gear from the premises and rule against the companies for trespassing and nuisance. Companies deny liability In a response to SHA’s lawsuit filed on March 8, 2022, Ridge Fishing, Orca Spirit Adventures and Cuda Marine Adventures claim they performed their duties under the agreements and SHA did not terminate or modify the agreements. Their ships have used moorage at
the Steveston Harbour dating back as far as 1976, according to the companies’ response. They added they paid the invoices within a “reasonable” amount of time and SHA agreed to extend the deadlines. They also denied having any control over the ex-coast guard ships and said Cadwallader was acting in his capacity as their employee and he never entered into agreements or contracts in his personal capacity. The companies claim they invested in improving the building and floats for the past “several” decades. Ridge Fishing also claimed it improved the locker by adding permanent storage fixtures. According to the three companies, they were “encouraged and allowed” to develop their businesses at the harbour and invest in the building, storage locker and floats, and their businesses are “dependent on the continued and uninterrupted access” to the premises. SHA overcharged: Companies The three companies also filed a counterclaim on March 8, 2022 for
amounts they allegedly overpaid due to invoicing issues from SHA, and accused SHA of breaching an agreement by not making temporary storage available when renovating a building the companies have used since 1985. According to the counterclaim, the three companies are also claiming for other amounts. If they get removed from Steveston Harbour, said the companies, SHA would get to enjoy improved buildings without “juristic reason for such enrichment.” The three companies sought an injunction order to prevent SHA from removing their possessions, as well as damages. SHA responded on April 29, 2022 and denied the existence of invoicing issues and that any improvements were made to the buildings. It argued it didn’t owe any amounts to the three companies and said they don’t have a valid licence of occupation. None of the allegations have been proven in court.

Steveston Harbour Authority (SHA) is trying to boot three companies and 11 ships off its property, claiming they were “routinely overdue” on rent and are not licensed to stay. SHA started a B.C. Supreme Court lawsuit in 2022 against Ridge Fishing, Orca Spirit Adventures, Cuda Marine Adventures, 11 ships and Richmondite Walter Cadwallader. According to the Feb. 1 notice of civil claim, amended on April 29, Cadwallader was issued licences on behalf of Ridge Fishing to occupy a building, a storage locker and areas around two floats on its Trites Road premises in 2019 and 2020. Ridge Fishing, Orca Spirit Adventures and Cuda Marine Adventures ships are stored on the premises, along with two ex-coast guard ships whose owners are unknown, according to the notice of civil claim. The licences expressly require payment be made monthly in advance and in full, said SHA, and each licence may be cancelled by either
party with 30 days’ written notice. SHA informed Cadwallader in February 2021 that Ridge Fishing’s account was “regularly in arrears” and asked all invoices be paid within 30 days, otherwise, SHA would cancel the occupation licences. Two days later, SHA acknowledged payment for “some of the outstanding account” for Ridge, but said there was still outstanding payment from as far back as November 2020. Furthermore, one of the ships was moved to an area that did not allow vessel storage, according to the notice of civil claim. SHA claimed it gave Cadwallader notice in July that it would terminate the licence in 30 days and asked for all 11 ships to be removed by Sept. 30, 2021. It also asked for payment of $13,712.95 for outstanding charges. All overdue amounts were repaid by the time SHA filed the lawsuit. According to SHA, Cadwallader and/ or Ridge Fishing were “routinely overdue on payments” for moorage of the ships and storage of the gear,

The price tag to rebuild a historic net loft in Steveston — that has already been demolished — could cost more than $50 million. The Phoenix Net Loft, whose condition was deteriorating, was intended to be rebuilt as a cultural space. City council approved about $19 million in 2020 to demolish and rebuild the historic building. This money was intended to rebuild the shell of the building, and didn’t include a cost of building the interior for programming space. Rebuilding has been on hold until city council decides what will be housed in the building. About $17 million is still in the budget for reconstruction — about $2 million was spent on demolition and salvage — but city staff have now estimated it will cost $33 million to rebuild the net loft. On top of that, it will cost between $17 million and $26 million to build the interior so it can be used as a community space. The high cost is due to expensive heavy timber construction, complex work over the water and the fact it’s in an environmentally sensitive area, according to city staff. They are recommending the building be used as an arts, culture and heritage multi-use space. The Phoenix Net Loft was built in 1943 and was used to dry, mend and store fishing nets.
3 arrested in alleged $10 million stolen in crypto largely car heist attempt

Three men were arrested after allegedly trying to rob a car at a Richmond intersection on Nov. 14. A video, originally posted on Chinese social media platform Little Red Book, showed two masked men in black approaching a lightcoloured Audi SUV. The car was stopped at a red light in a southbound lane on Garden City Road at Westminster Highway. The Audi was seen driving away by turning right while the men got into a dark-coloured Hyundai SUV originally stopped behind the Audi. The Hyundai appeared to pursue the Audi by turning right as well, stopping briefly to make way for westbound traffic. The video has since been taken down. According to Cpl. Dennis Hwang, Richmond RCMP spokesperson, frontline officers responded to a
two-vehicle collision in the area involving the two vehicles shortly before 4 p.m. last Tuesday. Occupants of the Hyundai allegedly tried to rob the Audi near the intersection but the Audi got away, he said. A 43-year-old man, a 69-yearold woman and two children ages 10 and 12 were in the Audi. Three men, 20, 33 and 42 years old, were in the Hyundai. “All the occupants of the Hyundai were known to police and arrested,” Hwang said. “A large sum of Canadian currency was recovered by police.” No one was injured in the incident. Richmond RCMP’s general investigation section has taken conduct of the investigation, which is active and ongoing. A Richmond person who had $10 million stolen in a cryptocurrency fraud has recovered most of their money, according to police. RCMP Chief Supt. Dave Chauhan said last week their financial crimes unit has been working on the case for about a year. About a dozen charges are expected to be laid, he added. Cryptocurrency investigations are “very complicated” as servers are being used in different countries, Chauhan explained. He added such investigations can take months and this one has taken about a year. Chauhan credited the RCMP’s economic crime unit and the digital forensics section, using new technology, for the successful investigation. “They have done an exceptional, exceptional job with this investigation, pretty well recovering most of the $10 million that was stolen from this individual,” Chauhan told city council’s community safety meeting last Wednesday.

Drivers fined Public input sought for Bark Park safety for using busonly lane

The City of Richmond is seeking public feedback about an off-leash dog park in Steveston after receiving complaints and a petition about safety issues. Residents will be asked to give their input on “safety enhancement options” for Bark Park and the adjacent trail. Jerome Dickey, a former city council candidate, collected 300 names on a petition asking for a physical separation between dogs and cyclists near Bark Park at No. 3 and Dyke roads. While presenting his petition in late September to city council, Dickey recounted tension between dog owners and cyclists. Two open houses will be held to solicit public feedback. The first one is on Tuesday, Nov. 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Richmond City Hall, 6911 No. 3 Rd. The second one will be held at Bark Park, 13900 No. 3 Rd., on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to noon. Eighteen drivers were ticketed $109 each last Wednesday morning for driving in a bus-only lane in Richmond. Police caught the drivers using designated bus lanes to bypass traffic during a one-hour operation on Highway 99. To catch “cheating” motorists using the highway’s designated bus-only lane during rush hour, Metro Vancouver Transit Police’s mobile enforcement team partnered with BC Highway Patrol for the early-morning operation. Following “several complaints” from bus operators, the officers were stationed at Highway 99 and Cambie Road to catch drivers in the bus lane, according to Const. Amanda Steed, Transit Police spokesperson. The 18 tickets added up to $1,962 in fines.

Richmond city staff is recommending city council reject a proposal to use an Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) property to park commercial vehicles. A numbered company, under the director Manjit Sandhu, is asking for approval on an ALR non-farm-use application to have 36 spaces to park vehicles at 5440 No. 6 Rd., near No. 6 Road and International Place. City bylaws found the 2.5acre property is already being used to park commercial vehicles and unauthorized fill has been deposited on the site without permission from the city nor the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC). Until 2021, for more than 20 years, the property had a history of being used as a
nursery farm, reads the city staff report. While it did have prior farm status, that is currently not the case, according to BC Assessment. North of the site is an agricultural processing building and associated parking and loading while the west, across No. 6 Road, is a property zoned for industrial businesses and mixed employment in the Official Community Plan. Meanwhile, the south and east sides of the property are in the ALR. City council will need to decide whether to forward the application to the ALC. If both city council and the ALC approve the non-farm use application, an additional application will need to be submitted to the ALC “to address the placement of fill on the property.”

A beauty shop in Richmond has had its business licence suspended for 90 days by city council after products containing codeine — an opioid — were found by Health Canada on its shelves. City staff had recommended a 30-day suspension, but several city councillors noted the seriousness of the infractions and the fact this was the third time Tokyo Beauty had been found selling illegal products. The Richmond News reported in September on Tokyo Beauty, on Westminster Highway, being caught by Health Canada selling products containing codeine. Coun. Kash Heed brought forward a motion to extend the suspension to 90 days, from the 30 days recommended. “If we want to send a deterrent to other stores that are doing it, we need to send a message right now that opioids and these other products that are illegal products — that lead to a crisis in our community — we send the message now,” Heed said. Coun. Laura Gillanders also called the
matter “very serious.” “Canada has standards for a reason and people have to know if they’re going to a store in Canada, that they’re buying a product that is safe,” Gillanders said. Charlene Zhu, a representative of the store, asked city council not to suspend the licence, saying the number of products were a “tiny proportion of the overall inventory.” “Suspending our licence would severely impact our employees and their families,” Zhu said. “We kindly request our business licence not be suspended as we’ve already corrected our mistakes and obtained the support and consent of Health Canada,” she added. Zhu noted the company is committed to the community, gives some free products to single mothers and does 200 hours of volunteer service a year. In the end, while the mayor, Couns. Alexa Loo and Chak Au voted against increasing the suspension from 30 days to 90 days, only Au voted against the suspension, noting the effect it would have on employees.

A group of volunteers — including a Hollywood actor — collected about 5,000 blankets and other warm items this past weekend along the Canada Line in Richmond and Vancouver. Kimble Jemison, known for his roles in Bowfinger and Star Trek: The Voyager, volunteered alongside Greg Ould, cofounder of Blanket BC Society, to collect and donate blankets and warm clothing during the annual Drive on the Line blanket drive. Ould told the Richmond News it was great to see his friend fly in from Los Angeles for a great cause. “(Jemison) loves Vancouver and always wants to help when he can,” he said. In addition to blankets, the volunteers took in monetary donations — the coins are still being counted, Ould said. Following the drive, Ould and his team handed out thousands of blankets to shelters in Vancouver as well as to the Salvation Army Shelter and Turning Point in Richmond. “Many of the frontline staff at the shelters were shocked with the amount of blankets, jackets and sock donations,”

Many shelters were out of blankets and in desperate need, saying it was “perfect timing” for the donations, he added. “Blanket drives have an immediate effect on those who need to stay warm because they get donated straight to shelters after the drive.”
Ould told the News the drive has encountered challenges, including a lack of volunteers, but he is grateful to those who were able to help out as they are the ones ensuring people stay warm. One volunteer in particular, Fumika, was indispensable in her efforts to coordinate and schedule volunteers for the event, Ould said.
It was a busy Saturday morning at the Lansdowne Centre parking lot as community members arrived with their donations for the annual RCMP toy drive. Undeterred by the cold, young Richmondites were seen eagerly handing new toys to volunteers and enjoying heartwarming and family-friendly activities. Some were locked up in jail, but only temporarily, for a donation to the Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG) Christmas Fund, which helps underprivileged families celebrate the winter holidays. Others posed for a photo with Santa and snacked on mini donuts, given to those who either donated a new, unwrapped toy or made a donation of $10 or more. Richmond Fire-Rescue and

Community members were able to learn more about their treasures during Steveston’s first-ever Antiques Roadshow-inspired fundraiser on Saturday. The fundraiser, benefiting Army Navy and Air Force 284 and Steveston Historical Society, featured appraisers and antique vendors. Among local residents showing up their treasures were Anieta and Stephen van Xavier, who brought along a silver-plated butter server, a brass dance card and a bracelet. It was their first time going to an antique appraisal, but they were no strangers to the event. “It was definitely the Antiques Roadshow… We all watched a little bit growing up,” said Anieta. She told the Richmond News she had purchased the butter server for $10 through an online auction and found it had stamps associated with a well-known silversmith. After a short 10 minutes, the van Xaviers emerged victorious. Anieta had been right in guessing the butter server dated back to the 1800s. It was made by a well-known American silversmith and used British silver. “It had all the right stamps and due to that, it was worth $300 or $400, and I paid $10 for it,”

On the other side of the room was Darleen Jiang, a local vendor selling glassware and china from all over the world from her mother’s personal collection. Treasures spotted at Jiang’s table include glass flower decorations made in China and exported to North American during the 1970s and 1980s. Jiang and her mother, who recently opened an antique shop in Steveston, said they wanted to attend the event to connect with the community. Steveston was a clear choice for their new shop, said Jiang, since it is a place “full of culture.” “There’s also a larger population of elderly community members, who tend to appreciate antiques more,” she said, adding younger people are also starting to gain interest.

Restaurant struggling with similar restaurant in same food court Richmond resident Tina Tan was looking forward to her new life with the opening of her Shanghai cuisine at Admiralty Centre food court, after investing nearly half a million dollars purchasing and renovating the store, and spending seven months on refurbishment. However, just four months after she opened her Hao Chi Lai restaurant, another Shanghai cuisine restaurant opened in the same food court, selling hand-made dumplings just like hers. And to her surprise, the owner of the new restaurant was her former employee. “I was shocked when she told me she was going to open a similar store in the same shopping mall. I was so angry that I couldn’t sleep at night. There are so many food courts in Richmond and why does she have to open one here,” said Tan. “And she worked at our store so she knows our business model and which products sell better, which do not sell as much. She even used the same containers as us and followed our pricing.” What concerned Tan even more is the former isn’t new to the restaurant business, but the owner of Long’s Noodle House, a 22-year-old Vancouver restaurant that was closed due to a fire in May. “They have an established brand built up over the past 20 years, and their store is much closer to the entrance than ours. How do we compete with that?” Tan complained to the mall’s property manager but said she was told there was no policy forbidding the opening of a restaurant if there is a similar one already existing in the food court. Tan talked to Long’s owner Sandy Shi about her concerns and Shi agreed to not put Xiao Long Bao, a signa-
ture Shanghai cuisine on her menu. However, Tan said she later found out people can buy the dish from Shi off the menu. According to Tan, she used to sell more than 200 dumplings every day — she now only sells around 50. Tan said she hopes Shi will stop selling Xiao Long Bao and stick to her menu. Shi: I’m following the rules Shi told the Richmond News she worked at Hao Chi Lai for two months, but added there is no rule forbidding selling similar products in the food court at Admiralty Centre. “There are two Shanghai restaurants in the Crystal Mall food court in Burnaby and they are fine. Each restaurant has their own style and specialties,” said Shi. Shi said she didn’t put Xiao Long Bao on her menu to show respect to Tan but she has to provide it to her old customers who come and ask for the signature dish. Shi said she also made other compromises including not selling two popular dishes at her previous restaurant because Tan sells them. “There is no way I don’t sell Xiao Long Bao at all. If I do that, I will lose my customers and I can’t afford to do that,” said Shi. Shi denied Tan’s accusations of copying her prices, packaging and business model but said she instead shared a lot of her experience in the restaurant business with Tan when she worked for her. “Some people may say from a moral perspective, I shouldn’t open one in the same mall, but this is my right and I didn’t break any rules,” said Shi. Rules vary in food courts Some shopping malls have policies that restrict the type of restaurants allowed in the food court, and others don’t. “When we have new tenants coming in, we do our best to select ones that offer
a different cuisine that no existing tenant offers. It’s based on the style and region of the cuisine, such as Shanghai cuisine, Sichuan cuisine, etc,” said a spokesperson at Aberdeen Centre. It’s easier for Aberdeen to select its tenants as the mall owns all the spaces, but many older malls in Richmond have their shops owned by indi-
viduals and the strata has no right to tell them what to sell, said Kenneth Ho, secretary of Pacific Plaza’s strata council and owner of Origin Café. “What we can do is to try to negotiate with the business owners to see if they can sell different products or even the same cuisine, if they can focus on different items to differentiate from or comple-

Richmond’s Minoru Arena was maxed out last Thursday evening with athletes, friends, family and firefighters in the stands to watch the late Raymond Sawada’s jersey fly high into the rafters. The jersey retirement ceremony was attended by Sawada’s wife, Nicole, and two daughters, Victoria and Charlotte, as well as Richmond Sockeyes president Doug Paterson, Burnaby firefighters and athletes. Sawada was a local hockey hero who played junior hockey for the Richmond Sockeyes from 2001 to 2003 and became a firefighter with the Burnaby fire department after retiring from his hockey career, which included playing for the NHL. The 38-year-old passed away while playing recreational hockey in Richmond earlier this year. “We’re here to honour a son, brother, husband, father, firefighter and of course a hockey player. Ray was all of these things and so much more,” said Drew Savage, emcee of the ceremony. “His drive, humility, humour and compassion and his love for everyone is a legacy all of us should strive to continue.” Sawada’s jersey number was raised with salutes and tears with all eyes glued to the rising number, followed by 27 seconds of silence and the singing of the national anthem. Retiring a jersey number is a way for a sports team to honour a player who retires or passes

For saLe - Misc NIEDJALSKI , Ronald (Ron) Wayne November 29, 1956 – November 1, 2023 GEIER, Martha Mueller Martha Mueller Geier passed peacefully, in her sleep, on November 9, 2023. Our beloved mother was welcomed into her heavenly home just 20 days short of her 97th birthday. Born on November 29,1926 in Karamurat, Romania, to Walburga and Maximillian Mueller, the oldest of eight siblings. Martha Mueller married Jakob Geier on February 27,1954, living in Klosterlechfeld, Germany briefly, until they departed for Canada in September of that year. Bravely, they arrived suitcase in hand, pennies in their pockets, as new immigrants; who, with strength and courage, faced many obstacles and built a life in Richmond, BC, Canada. Together, she and Jakob had four children, Paul, Renate, Monika and Frank, whose nurture and support became her central focus, expanding to include their spouses and her grandchildren. Jakob preceded her in death, in May of 2000 and Martha remained devoted to her family, her church, and her cherished friends from the little German village in Romania. For many years she cared for her own, and eventually other children; creating a home filled with love, the delicious smells of baking, and a freezer full of food for a rainy day. Her life was a living example of dedication, hard work, and her simple pleasures included tending to her rose garden, singing the sound of music, dancing in the kitchen and, particularly, chatting with her close friends over the phone. She was our devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and, for countess more, a beloved friend. Martha is survived by her four brothers, three sisters, her four children and their spouses, seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, plus one great great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. All of whom she loved and made a difference for. And all of us will miss her deeply. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 24, 2023 at 11:00 am; Sacred Heart Church, 3900 Arthur Drive, Ladner, BC. A reception will follow in the Parish Center to celebrate her strength, her spirit and heart she generously shared with those that had the pleasure to know her over her many years of life. A lifelong resident of Richmond. Ron’s goal throughout his life was to help others and he certainly succeeded. For many years Ron was involved with the Salvation Army and Food Bank where he enthusiastically and tirelessly helped hundreds of those less fortunate with much needed resources and support. He always spoke very fondly of those he worked alongside with and acquired a great deal of knowledge by being involved with these organizations. Ron was a true believer that people are good at heart and just need a little help from time to time. Ron was a deep thinker and always enjoyed a philosophical debate. He had a huge passion for sports and played them throughout his youth and early adult years. When Ron was not working or volunteering, he could be found collecting records, sports memorabilia or catching up on the latest major sports championship series. Ron loved to spend time with his children and especially enjoyed when his son Matthew would put together a delicious meal for them to share. He will be sorely missed. Ron is predeceased by his father Stanley. Leaves to mourn his mother Dorothy; children Katrina, Amanda, Bethany and Matthew; granddaughter Elliott; brothers Larry and Jim, sister Barbara; and many friends and colleagues. A celebration of Ron’s life and how he made his community a better place will be held on November 29, 2023 at The Salvation Army Richmond Community Church (8280 Gilbert Road) and will begin at 5:30 pm. NITTA, Miyuki Our family is deeply saddened to announce that Miyuki passed away on November 15, 2023 at the age of 95 in Richmond, BC. She is survived by daughters Karen (Vince Kristensen), Suzi Petersen (Brian), Charlene Meier (Joe), Janet (Peter Ruhe), Michele (Urmas Michael Tallermo); grandchildren Matt Petersen, Hayley Leonovas (Andrejus); great grandchildren Henry, Amy; sister Keiko Nishiura; and many dear nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Mitsuyoshi, sister Fukue and brother Isao. Miyuki was born in Steveston, BC and was part of the Japanese Canadian fishing community. She worked hard throughout her life without complaint. Her last job before retirement was in Richmond Hospital’s Housekeeping department. She was rarely idle and her family benefited from her many skills. Miyuki was good with her hands and could cook, bake, sew, knit, crochet and cultivate a garden. She took joy in learning crafts from her friends who were upcycling before it was popular. Her creations have become enduring keepsakes. She honoured many Japanese traditions and faithfully made mochi for family and friends to celebrate Oshogatsu (Japanese New Year). After Alzheimer’s Disease took away many of her abilities, Miyuki continued to enjoy weekly Sunday dinners with her family. She will be lovingly remembered for her gentle strength, kind heart, resilience and humility. Miyuki’s family will be forever grateful to the many individuals who showed kindness when it was needed the most these past ten years. A memorial service will be held at Steveston Buddhist Temple (4360 Garry St., Richmond, BC) at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 2, 2023. Koden and flowers gratefully declined. Patricia Marion Vincent was born November 8,1937 in Dawson City, Yukon and passed away on May 22, 2023 in Nanaimo, BC. She was the only daughter of Ralph and Ida Boyer, however, she had two brothers: Rich (Debbie) Boyer of Seattle, and Bob (Peggy) Boyer of Richmond. Pat put a nursing education on hold after graduating from St. Pat’s High School in Vancouver and married Louis (Lou) Vincent in September of 1956. They had three children: Mike (Kim) Vincent of Ladner; Kathy Murdoch (Ron Baker) of Nanaimo; and Mark Vincent of Parksville. Pat and Lou lived in Richmond for 34 years in the same house, starting in the early 1960’s. Pat entered the workforce in the 1970’s with a job at Hilda’s (clothing store) in Brighouse on No. 3 Road. After working there for a few years, she landed a job at Loomis Courier and worked her way up the ladder, retiring in 1993 after being the head of Accounts Receivable and being a Special Projects Manager. Loomis was a thriving company and Pat loved the work and travel that came with that work. She especially liked working with Margaret Huggin and Danny Remedios. In 1993, Pat and Lou retired to Parksville. Pat did contract work for another ten years with Conexsys. She got to work with her previous boss and good friend, Rene Dehollander and they travelled all over North America running the registration for vendors and participants at trade shows. Once again, Pat got to travel and meet new and old friends…she loved it. After Pat truly retired ten years later, her and Lou continued to travel in the winter and to enjoy life on Vancouver Island in the summer. They were proud of their five grandchildren: Mike (Kristen) Vincent, Caitlyn (Clayton) Schlaak, Natalee Gregory, Tessa (Brad) Calder, Patty (Anthony) Rees and their twelve great grandchildren. Lou passed away in February of 2013 and Pat’s life changed, but she continued to enjoy cruising, especially to Italy, Greece, Scandinavia and Russia. She also enjoyed gardening, shopping at a good mall, going to Las Vegas and Hawaii, and just being outside in the sunshine. Thanks to all of Pat’s friends and family that have kept in touch over the last two years. It has meant a lot to Mike, Kathy and Mark.
YOUNG, Bruce (Skip) October 16, 2023 After a long battle with many health issues, Skip passed away peacefully in Richmond Hospital in October. He is survived by his wife Gillian; son Peter; daughter Mary (Jeff); stepdaughters Katherine (Bill) and Susan (Theo); stepson Bryan (Claire); four step−grandchildren Stephanie, Elisabeth, Tyler and Jack; and Luca, the dog. Skip’s career included many chapters − photography, car racing, pipe organs and music, fishing and water conservancy. Skip was the founder of Trout Unlimited Canada over 50 years ago in Montreal − an organization that has left an indelible mark on the preservation of coldwater habitat in Canada. His lifelong commitment to the protection of ecosystems has defined his legacy and has inspired new generations to follow in his footsteps. He was a past member of BC’s Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation and Director Emeritus of Trout Unlimited Canada, where he played a significant role in the drafting of the Pacific Salmon Treaty. Skip particularly enjoyed being a member of and engaging with his colleagues in the Loons Fly Fishing Club. In Skip’s honour, a run of the Skookumchuck River in the West Kootenays, which he visited many times in recent years, will now be known by his many conservation and angling friends as "Skip’s Run." Skip’s last working years were with Canada’s foreign service, where he represented his country in Cleveland, Seattle, and Lagos, Nigeria. After many years abroad, he and Gillian returned to Canada, where he enjoyed his retirement years partaking in many local clubs and activities in Richmond, BC.
