MICHAEL FITZMAURICE, MD Founder of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute Double Board Certified Hand Surgeon

Life and work won’t stop, even when the pain of carpal tunnel syndrome stops you. The tingling, numbness, weakness, and pain caused by compressed nerve fibers inside the wrist can interfere with everyday activities, and ultimately disrupt your overall quality of life. Nationally-distinguished expert hand surgeon Dr. Michael Fitzmaurice has designed a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive system to treat carpal tunnel syndrome more effectively than ever. Available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute in Phoenix, the EndoTech® Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release System uses sophisticated endoscopic surgery techniques for smaller incisions, greater precision, and more accuracy in relieving the compressed nerves. With EndoTech, patients can expect to return to driving or typing that novel in as little as two days after the procedure.

hey say January is a time for new beginnings but I’m starting a little early this year, taking on my new position with Uptown Magazine. Hello everyone :) I grew up in a family centered around the newspaper and magazine industry and for as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a print journalist. Writing was always my “thing” — it was my creative outlet and something that came naturally to me, so I carried my dream all the way to the University of Arizona (Bear down!) and now to Uptown. I’m a little bit like Dawn Rogers, our cover story, featured on page 30. I may not be planning a gigantic (and did I mention amazing?) event but, just like Dawn, I’ve had passion for one thing most of my life and never took my eye off the ball (pun intended). Dawn has been involved in the basketball arena for decades and never gave up on winning the bid to bring the NCAA Final Four Championship to Phoenix. Although Phoenix is known for its mild “winters,” it’s still chilly and it’s still the holidays, so we’ve compiled all of the best seasonal finds for you. Warm your insides up with our favorite soups on page 78, as well as some adult-friendly, hot drinks for those cool nights on page 76. With the holidays also come the holiday parties. And, what’s the holidays without gifts? Our shop section (page 58) features scarves to keep you warm and fashionable at the same time, as well as fine jewelry to help you sparkle at every holiday party you attend this year. I hope to bring many more stories to Uptown that highlight people, places and events in the community that are making a difference in your everyday life and inspiring you to go out there and get your “winning bid.” Happy holidays and stay warm! Dr. Fitzmaurice has performed thousands of minimally-invasive, endoscopic hand procedures in Arizona over the last decade.

You never appreciate how important the thumb is to regular activities until a tendon injury compromises movement. Repetitive motion from everyday activities such as typing on a laptop or playing a favorite sport, can lead to swelling and inflammation of the tendon sheath, the condition known as De Quervains Tendinitis. This causes pain and limited mobility of the wrist and thumb.

Developed by board certified hand surgeon Michael Fitzmaurice, M.D., and available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute in Phoenix, Endotech uses a small incision and endoscope to repair the injured tendons. Most patients experience immediate relief and improved movement immediately following the procedure, and can return to work in as little as one week!

De Quervains Tendinitis can now be treated by the state of the art, minimally invasive EndoTech Endoscopic De Quervains Release System.

The

Car Care Conundrum:

to Trust or Not to Trust?

Shahe Koulloukian isn’t interested in taking advantage of anyone. Ever. It’s quite the opposite, in fact. As the owner of Mazvo Auto Car Care Center, his philosophy is simple: to make a difference for those who are most typically victims of untrustworthy auto shops – namely, women and seniors. “Some people tell me that I’ve come up with a brilliant marketing strategy and market niche, but that actually annoys me,” Shahe says. “To me this is not brilliance or marketing; it’s doing what I believe in and doing what’s right. To me, that’s also good business.” He credits his outlook to his upbringing, and the influence of his grandparents, who were survivors of the 1915 Armenian genocide; most of their extended family perished at the hands of humankind at its worst. Not because they had done anything wrong, not because they were bad people, not because they had inflicted harm on others, but strictly because of their nationality. Shahe’s grandparents, he says, instilled in him the importance of tolerance and diversity, to respect and accept all people. “Right from the start, my goal and passion was to develop my business to make a difference for those who tended to be taken advantage of by large number of car businesses,” he states. But simply claiming to be honest, trustworthy, and straightforward means very little – after all, isn’t that what everyone says? So Shahe decided to put his money where his mouth is, so to speak, and created his free-of-charge, wildly popular “You Auto Know” car care clinics. They teach – and therefore, empower – anyone who wants to learn more about the fundamentals of auto repair, such as how to change a spare tire, jump start a car, check fluid levels, and understand what all the warning lights mean.

But why is this education so important? “It’s easy to just raise your hands and say, ‘I don’t know, just fix it,’ and that’s what dishonest auto repair shops are banking on,” Shahe warns. “They tend to constantly offer low ball specials and low pricing to lure customers in. They also have artificially low hourly rates and pricing which is made up in non-transparent ways.” One of his favorite quotes is “The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.” Unfortunately, this wisdom is not pervasive across the auto industry, and people often find themselves the victims of unscrupulous business practices. To help avoid this, Shahe offers these tips: • Free diagnostics charges are not “free.” • “Check engine light trouble code reading” is not diagnostics. • Low-ball pricing is the intent to lure you in. • “Hard sell” is done through scare tactics. • Beware of free oil changes for life. • Beware of $99 brakes. As a repair shop owner, Shahe finds the concept of swindling innocent people appalling – and that’s why he speaks out against it. “Consumers need to understand the games being played along with how to pick to honest, competent, caring repair shops. They’re out there, but sometimes hard to find,” he says. “Even if you don’t do business with me, I want you to seek out shops that are ethical, competent, high-quality, fairly priced, and truly care about their customers. Yes – you can get all of this from the right repair shop!” For more information, contact Mazvo Auto Car Care Center, 4610 North 7th Street, Phoenix, (602) 248-8711, www.mazvo.com

LIFE HAPPENS HERE A Peek into Rafterhouse BY KELLY POTTS PHOTOS BY CARL SCHULTZ

Finding a turnkey, Pinterest-worthy home in one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the Valley would be a dream come true for most families. Local company Rafterhouse is making that dream a reality. continued‌ DECEMBER 2015 |

no t iced

up close The Rafterhouse team wasn’t always building fantasy homes in popular and trendy neighborhoods. In 2011, Austin King and Chris Liles began flipping homes in the outskirts of Maricopa County. Chasing anything with a front door and profit margin, the soon-to-be business partners found their new calling. “We were tired of these cosmetic remodels that lacked artistry and craft,” King says. “And, we were certainly tired of driving all over town to chase a dollar.” In late 2012, they decided to plant a stake in the neighborhood that meant the most to them – Arcadia. Both King’s and Liles’ wives grew up in Arcadia and the business partners were drawn to the unique charm of the neighborhood. Arcadia is filled with 1950s post-war era ranch homes and that attraction is what King says drew Rafterhouse in. “Our homes have a very unique look and we’ve stayed focused on exploring new materials and new ways to remain on the cutting edge of housing. We’ve tried to take a very classical and timeless style and continue to put our own unique Rafterhouse spin on it,” he explains. With backgrounds in real estate and construction, their unique finishes and sophisticated design is unmatched in the area. Rafterhouse specializes in creating homes that are functional for families. Although it’s apparent that this business is their calling, finding their niche did not come easy for King and Liles. “In construction there are many challenges – every day presents itself with situations that need to be overcome,” King says. “On a larger spectrum, navigating the world of spec home building in a rapidly changing real estate market has been a huge challenge,” he explains. “We’ve chosen to adapt with the market as opposed to remaining resistant. That approach has taken us on quite the journey from entry level real estate deals to multimillion-dollar home projects.” One of many things that sets Rafterhouse apart from other renovation companies is the culture. “These homes matter to us,” King says. “People matter to us, our homeowners matter. This company is not about putting profits above all else. Rafterhouse is about the

product and the people, and building place in our community. We passionately believe that it’s critical to build the best house possible and be nice to people along the way.” Although each house is unique in design and process, some of Rafterhouses’ renovations in the past include creating an open floor plan to make large rooms, adding marble-topped kitchen islands, building pantries with peek-in vintage doors, constructing or restoring brick fireplaces and adding areas with a desk as well as built-in cubbies for shoes, coats and kids’ items. Their houses always have personal touches that leave potential home buyers feeling at home the second they walk in the door. “There’s something about building these homes for real families to live in, that makes us strive for the best and be the best,” he explains Recently, Rafterhouse had a television pilot air on HGTV. It all started at an HGTV magazine shoot, where the magazine featured Chris and Fallon Liles’ remodeled home. During the shoot, King and Liles talked with the team about the possibility of shooting a pilot for the cable network. King and Liles decided to go for it, and pitched a network executive over social media. “It’s been surreal to watch this entire journey slowly unfold,” King explains. “It

took over a year from first contact [with the network] to our one-episode pilot airing on HGTV this past October.” Since the pilot aired, Rafterhouse has received positive feedback. “Initial responses from the show have been great and very supportive. We had a blast filming the pilot and did our best to be ourselves.” So, why stick to Arcadia? For King, the answer is simple. “We’ve been at the forefront of the rise in property value, specifically in lower Arcadia, since 2013,” he says. “With the market bottoming out in the prior years, it’s been very gratifying raising the bar and setting the best standard we can for residential remodel work. Gone are the days of dime-a-dozen cosmetic fix-and-flip investors and now there are great companies doing amazing work and investing time and money in our community.” Rafterhouse currently renovates eight homes in the Arcadia neighborhood annually. The question on everyone’s mind – what’s next for Rafterhouse? King coyly responds “Stay tuned! 2016 will bring some exciting opportunities.” For more information about Rafterhouse, visit www.rafterhouse.com or call 480.499.2683.

CARRINGTON CARES

Josh Chumley proves the business of healthcare is more than just a day job BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

M

any great leaders attain success by climbing the corporate ladder, often by putting in late nights and early mornings at the office. Such was not the case for Josh Chumley, the newly named executive director of Carrington College’s Phoenix North and Phoenix West campuses, which offers both certificate and degree programs in nursing, medical assisting, pharmacy technology, respiratory care and more. “I found my way by helping others to find theirs. I got my start in social services, where I thought I could make the biggest impact in my community,” says Chumley, who put in years both running group homes and serving as an in-house counselor for foster children. The experience, especially in mentoring children toward academic and personal success despite their often tumultuous home lives, inspired Chumley to get more involved, first with Junior Achievement, and now with Carrington College. “Our focus is to help change our students’ lives through education,” he explains. “This position allows me to help others to help themselves, both to become better providers at home, and to become amazing healthcare providers.”

Etc.

What has been the hardest part about taking on this position? Meetings! There are lots of meetings, so whenever I have the chance to get into our campus labs, I take it! How are you working to ensure your students are good community citizens in addition to great medical providers? We actually have a Carrington Cares community outreach program, where students and faculty join together to help give back through volunteerism and fundraising. If you were a Carrington student, which program would you choose? Probably the pharmacy technology program. UPTOWN |

ARIZONA BORN BREAD

How Mediterra Bakehouse is Changing the Game BY GABBY RICHMAN PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

C

hances are you’ve come across one of Mediterra Bakehouse’s artisan loaves at a local restaurant, fine grocery store or at a resort in the Valley, but you probably don’t know the story behind the bakery or owner, Nick Ambeliotis. Ambeliotis opened the first location in Pittsburgh in 2000, and down the road he found himself traveling out to Arizona frequently to visit a Greek Orthodox Monastery. In 2011, he decided it was time for a change and moved out here full time to open another location, leaving his four adult children in charge of the original location. Mediterra currently bakes about 20 different breads all by hand (think cranberry pecan, rosemary focaccia, parmesan pepper to start it off) and it takes 18 hours to make just one loaf but in June, the bakehouse is going to take everything to the next level. They have contracted with a local farmer to lease out land near the bakehouse in order to grow heirloom grain and then they will mill it in their own facility to produce a 100 percent locally farmed and milled bread. The bread will be giving back to local farmers while staying at an affordable price.

Etc.

What do you like to do in your free time? My favorite past time is family, especially holding my grandchildren. What is your favorite part of the bread making process? It’s an amazing feeling when you walk into the bakehouse at the moment when our six starters are completely ripe and fermented, ready to produce great bread. I also enjoy watching that oven spring when dough becomes bread. What is your favorite bread Mediterra makes? Mt Athos fire bread—The Earth reveals itself to you in this loaf.

ashion isn’t just what Taucha Silk does for a living, it’s who she is. Silk owns women and children’s boutique Mae & Marie, which has been open for about two years. She describes her style as “chic with an edge, while staying a little flirty,” typically wearing a T-shirt, button down or blazer with jeans and a pair of heels. Her ensembles aren’t complete without one of her favorite purses by Chanel or Celiné. “I love jewelry, accessorizing and I love handbags,” Silk says. When she’s not checking out the hottest new items at her store, she enjoys shopping at other boutiques such as Amy Inc., Nové and Allison [by the beach], her favorite boutique in Manhattan Beach, California. Some of her favorite jewelry brands are Dannijo, Wanderlust and Native Gem, but she heads to Isaac Jewelers when she’s looking for her next fine piece of jewelry. When she’s not running her store, Silk enjoys spending time with her family and escaping to their Manhattan Beach home to shop and enjoy the cooler temperatures near the ocean.

Do you have a pair of jeans you can’t live without? One of my favorite jeans are a pair of Frame jeans that are distressed but super soft and hold everything in! Do you have a favorite peice of jewelry or accessory? My favorite piece of jewelry is a ring that is shaped like a round dome and is all diamonds I received last year for Christmas from my hubby from Issac Jewelers. I do love my Chanel pieces as well! You can be wearing jeans and a t-shirt and throw on a chanel and it instantly takes the outfit to the next level!

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE PHOENIX FINAL FOUR Dawn Rogers Plays Out Her Lifelong Dream in a Position of a Lifetime BY GRETCHEN PAHIA PHOTOS BY CARL SCHULTZ

I

t is quite possibly one of the biggest collegiate competitions played every year —the Final Four. Thanks to the work done by a local organizing committee, now headed by Phoenix resident Dawn Rogers, that big tournament, otherwise known as the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship, is headed to the University of Phoenix Stadium in April 2017. “In 2007 when we started putting together a bid to host the games here in the valley, I was very excited to work with the committee and various teams across the valley,” says Rogers. “When were weren’t successful with the first bid, I was very disappointed. However, we went

right into the next bid cycle and we were successful in November of 2014.” Rogers has worked within the intercollegiate system for the last 25 years and very closely with men’s basketball. After the group won the bid to bring the Final Four to the Valley, Rogers began to think about who the right leadership was to run the event. “The more I thought about it, the more I realized it was something I wanted to do,” she explains. “The more I realized it was something I was passionate about. I had so many ideas and I was so excited about it, so I made the decision to talk to all the right people and express my UPTOWN |

desire to be executive director. It was the right time for me and my family to make a career change and I applied for the job and I am very blessed and honored to have been selected.” Work is just getting started for Rogers and the local organizing committee, and there is a lot to be done between now and when the games get to Glendale in 2017. “In the immediate, we just unveiled the Phoenix Final Four logo and then we will be putting our board of directors together and working on our legacy program,” says Rogers. That is a big piece of the puzzle for the team, trying to figure out what the organization would like to do for the community and the footprint they would like to leave behind once the competition is over. “We are starting to work on our platform, looking at different sports and sustainability programs across the board, the things we can implement for that weekend and further sustainability for the Valley. I’m so excited to take this event and use it as a platform to educate people about important topics such as fitness, nutrition, education, sustainability and more, these are all an essential part of the program,” she says. After the 2016 Final Four is played in Houston, that group will officially hand the baton off to the Phoenix committee. Rogers says the Phoenix group needs to be in a position at that time to know what they are going to do and start putting their plans into action. As part of her work to get prepared, Rogers says she is currently co-teaching a course at Arizona State University on sports and sustainability to help teach students about what is to come and how great things can be in the future. “It was really a priority to use when we put our bid in to include Arizona State University, our host institution, and use them to get involved in every facet. This is a great opportunity for us as an organization and for the students to learn and get hands on experience,” Rogers explains. This will mark the first time the Final Four will be hosted in Phoenix, which makes it a very exciting time for the entire organizing committee. It is also the first time since 1995 the games will be hosted in the West, so Rogers understands a lot of eyes will be on all the work she and her

team are doing every day. “Besides the obvious of putting on a flawlessly executed game and having an outstanding experience, I’m really excited to expose our region to what I consider to be the most iconic amateur experience and game around,” she says. Rogers is making certain that all the right steps are being taken to ensure the entire weekend, from start to finish, goes off without a hitch.

“Besides the obvious of putting on a flawlessly executed game and having an outstanding experience, I’m really excited to expose our region to what I consider to be the most iconic amateur experience and game around.” “Having a really strong marketing plan to make sure that people around the Valley and the region understand there is not only basketball games but a music festival, a fan fest and so much more going on during that weekend that is very important to us as a group.” Rogers adds one of the most important things to the organization is that the state of Arizona benefits as a whole and that the region sees a boost from the Final Four coming to Phoenix. “Semi-Finals are on Saturday, finals UPTOWN |

on Monday, that leaves Sunday as a day off for fans,” she says. “So we want to make sure people visiting Arizona know all the great things we have to offer as a state. We are working with visitor and travel bureaus to push great day trips such as Tucson, Grand Canyon, Sedona, Jerome, just to name a few. We want to encourage people to come in early and enjoy all of what the state has to offer.” One of the best parts of hosting the games here in the valley, according to Rogers, will be the fact is that there will be so many events across the valley. “We are working hard to offer events in a variety of places across the valley, so that people feel they have access to them all,” says Rogers. “We will be holding so many incredible events outside of the games, many of which will be low costs or even free for the public, in hopes of bringing people from the valley out to spend money and also bringing visitors to the valley out to explore all different areas of town.” Rogers says since the opening of the University of Phoenix Stadium, the possibility of bringing in bigger sporting events such as the Final Four has been much easier and gives groups like the local organizing committee the ability to showcase how great of a place the valley really is. “It really is an honor to be able to host this event here, Phoenix has always been an incredible sports done and I think what we have done in the last five years has really set ourselves apart as a city that can really host these large sporting events and host them well.” Being selected for a role like executive director means a lot of pressure, but Rogers has the support of her family to back her up during the stressful times. “My family has been incredible,” she says. “My kids are all sports fans and have been living with collegiate sports activities most of their lives, so they were just as excited about this new role as I was. My husband has moved twice over the years with me to see me live out my collegiate sports dreams and even once working in collegiate sports himself, so he understands the drive and how important it is to me. I appreciate them so much and can’t thank them enough for what they have allowed me to do.”

REPLACING FEAR WITH JOY Robert Miley Shares His Honor with Arizona Youth BY GABBY RICHMAN PHOTOS BY CHRIS HEREFORD

R

obert Miley took a positive event in his life and decided to share his experience to spread the joy to others. Miley has been selected to represent Arizona at the 2015 America Celebrates: Ornaments from Across the USA, where his ornaments will be on display at the President’s Park (White House) in Washington, D.C. He joins artists from all 56 states, territories, and the District of Columbia, but his ornament submissions have a tiny twist. Miley is the CEO and founder of Release the Fear, a nonprofit health and human services organization, that works with disadvantaged and at-risk youth. Release the Fear, founded in 1996, works with youth throughout Arizona and across the country in workshops and programs designed to help them with school work, conflict resolution, peer pressure and bullying. “Basically through art, music and

communication, teaching them better cognitive behavioral skills by inspiring and empowering them with new tools, they are able to make better life choices,” Miley says. “We don’t believe there is such thing as a bad kid or a bad person, we believe they haven’t found their gift yet.” Miley decided to share his honor with some individuals from Release the Fear, having them collaborate on the 12 ornaments he is submitting, saying the response from the participants has been overwhelming. “One kid said to me, ‘You mean, what we do is like going to the White House? Like the president will see it and people around the world?’ It was just great,” he says. The tree lighting, presented by the National Park Foundation and the National Park Service, will be held on December 3. 302 W. Monroe St.,Phoenix; 602818-6959; www.releasethefear.org. O

ver the past year, Dr Erik Svans and Dr Steven Chang have treated 100’s of teeth with a revolutionary procedure to correct Gingival Recession away from a procedure called Pinhole Surgical Technique™ or PST™. The results have been very impressive, without the need for suturing and cutting donor tissue from your palate, which was required for Traditional Gingival Grafting. Focusing on solving the original cause of the recession first (overzealous brushing, history of periodontal disease, bruxism), and treating the affected sites with PST™ second, Dr Svans and Dr Chang have been able to provide an alternative to Gingival Recession

Correction predictably and reliably with minimal pain—the number one reason why patients and dentists dislike the Traditional approach. Pinhole Surgical Technique was designed to help those who suffer from Gingival Recession procedure that is considered the most painful procedure in Dentistry. Dr. Svans and Dr. Chang were two of the first dentists in Arizona and the United States trained and certified as Pinhole Surgical Technique™ Providers. During your Complimentary Consult, they can educate you on this amazing procedure and how they can help correct your receding gums without sutures and with mild post operative pain.

Ryan House is one of two organizations in the entire country that provides these services to families, and the only facility of its kind in the Southwest. This year’s event proceeds benefit the Story of Me Room at Ryan House, which is a multi-media room where the children of Ryan House can record messgages and experiences for themselves and loved ones. The event takes place in the Gold Room at the Arizona Biltmore, celebrating the rich 1930s history the room embodies. The evening will be a night of elegance that includes fine dining, dancing and entertaining. Attire is evening gowns for women and white dinner jackets or tuxes for men. The history won’t end with the room decor, there will also be music from the ‘30s and ‘40s, commemorating the musical classic, “White Christmas” written by Irving Berlin at The Arizona Biltmore in 1940. You’ll feel like you’ve entered a time machine with cigarette girls, an orchestra and an after party featuring cigars, ports and sweet treats to cap the night off.

W

hen you think about it, what has happened to the GMC is remarkable. A brand once known as a hay hauler on farmsis suddenly in the ranks of brands like Rolex and Prada. The Yukon XL Denali, the redesigned, full-size, sport utility vehicle has quickly become the ride for more brand-appreciative drivers. It also goes to show that, even though the full-size SUV market isn’t what it once was, there are still sufficient buyers to constitute an appealing market segment. Today, modern SUVs are primarily crossover vehicles built on platforms used for passenger cars. The Yukon XL Denali DECEMBER 2015 |

is a throwback vehicle, among the few that are still built on a truck-like, body-onplatform chassis. Car-based SUVs certainly ride more comfortably, handle better, and get more impressive fuel economy, but traditional SUVs like the Yukon XL Denali easily out-muscle them, with true fourwheel drive (true meaning the driver must manually select this mode), 8,000-plus pounds of towing capacity, and a voluminous 62.5 cubic feet of cargo space. Yukon XL Denali’s fresh styling easily beats its rivals, and it is much betterlooking than the previous generation. The interior is classier, and there are more hightech electronic amenities, optional power fold-flat second and third-row seats, and advanced safety features. Beyond being amazingly quiet, my real-world fuel mileage wasn’t bad and actually close to the window-sticker numbers, which almost never happens. I got 15-plus mpg in the city and 19.2 mpg on the highway. My top-of-the-line four-wheel drive Yukon XL Denali was exemplary, with a powerful 420-horsepower, 6.2-liter, V-8 engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Inside, many premium options come standard: perforated heated and cooled leather front seats, a heated steering wheel and second-row seats, a rearview camera, and a Bose CenterPoint Surround Sound audio system. The infotainment system also boasts an 8-inch color touch screen. New options for 2016 include an Enhanced Driver Alert Package, which adds active lane-keeping assist, forwardcollision alert, lane-departure warning, and vibrating seat alerts if you wander out of your lane. There are eight different 22-inch wheel choices and a foot-sensing power tailgate. So, for those who want and need maximum cargo and passenger capacity, combined with four-wheel drive, big-trailer towing capacity, and a luxurious interior, the 2016 GMC Yukon XL Denali is an excellent choice. Jim Prueter is a spokesperson for AAA, and his auto reviews and travel stories appear nationally in print and online. You can reach him at jmprueter@yahoo.com.

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’

Soak up quiet coastal life in picturesque Mendocino BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

M

endocino, about a three-hour drive north of San Francisco, is filled with diverse landscapes, from vineyards and rolling hills to redwood forests and rocky shores. Its temperate climate lends itself to vacationing any time of year (just be sure to pack layers!), and there are activities aplenty. Mendocino is a place where life slows down a bit, affording you the chance to take in stunning seaside scenery, peruse boutiques and galleries, and savor the local flavors of both food and wine.

The Drive to Mendocino As you head north on U.S. Route 101, you’ll pass through Sonoma Valley, home to undulating vineyards and some amazing wines. The town of Healdsburg is worth a stop to explore the quaint downtown areas shops, restaurants, and of course, wineries. Pop into Costeaux Bakery (www.costeaux.com) on Healdsburg Avenue for a slice of their award-winning Princess Cake, often garnished with holly for the holidays. As you leave U.S. Route 101 and wind across the countryside on state Route 128, you’ll pass by some of the country’s best organic wineries. The landscape transforms when you reach the towering redwoods in Navarro River Redwoods State Park. You soon end up on the Pacific Coast Highway just a few miles south of Mendocino Village.

Exploring Mendocino

A Luxury Inn Brewery Gulch Inn (www.brewerygulchinn.com) will make your Mendocino visit even more memorable. The quaint, 10-room inn was constructed on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean using 150-year-old eco-salvaged, firstgrowth, virgin redwoods pulled from the mud in nearby Big River. This boutique inn has accolades as a AAA Four Diamond property and has been a top hotel with both Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast. Certified by the Green Hotels Association, the inn blends environmental consciousness with a luxury experience. Your stay includes a gourmet breakfast and an evening “light dinner buffet” that features Northern California’s rich culinary bounty. Dinner always includes a selection of local wines and brews along with delectable food that is usually natural, organic, and local. Meals are served in the Great Room alongside a four-sided fireplace with picturesque views of Smuggler’s Cover. DECEMBER 2015 |

The historic town of Mendocino Village, perched on the headlands above the ocean, is home to cafes and charming boutiques. Stop by the Village Toy Store, which is filled with European toys. Then, pop into The Gallery Bookshop, a cozy independent bookstore with spectacular ocean views. About 15 minutes north of Mendocino Village is Fort Bragg, home to Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens (www.gardenbythesea.org). With 47 acres overlooking the Pacific, this is one of only a few public gardens that reaches the coast. During December, thousands of twinkling lights fill the gardens. While in Fort Bragg, opt for dinner at Mendo Bistro (www. mendobistro.com) on Main Street. The locally sourced options include housemade pastas and hearty meals of duck, venison, quail, and seafood. You can’t leave the area without a wine tasting, and the famed Anderson Valley is just a short drive away. Here, you’ll find wonderful pinot noir at Lula Cellars and great sparkling wines at Scharffenberger Cellars and Roederer Estate. Whether you’re hunting for the best pinot, embarking on a whale watching excursion (yes, they have those, too), or simply seeking a chance to slow down and relax, you’re sure to discover a bit of your own quiet paradise in Mendocino.

SEASONAL SOUPS Chill out and warm up at these 5 restaurants BY TARYN JEFFRIES

T

here is nothing more comforting on a crisp winter’s day as a warm bowl of soup. As the steam wisps from the bowl, the fragrance of the seasonal ingredients wrap around you like your coziest plush sweater or a hug from your favorite person. While we may not have the snow drifts to maneuver or windshields to de-ice, we certainly have our own version of winter with crisp temperatures hovering in the 50’s. Not cold enough for a parka, but definitely brisk enough for a warm bowl of soup. We’ve sourced some of the best soups in your neighborhood for when the chill strikes.

Bink’s Midtown 2320 E. Osborn Road, Phoenix 602.388.4874 www.binkleysrestaurantgroup.com There is no question that the space that houses Bink’s Midtown is rich with history. One could believe that the love, laughter and care that was shared through the years in the home prior to being transformed to the now popular dining spot lingers and adds to the overall experience. Chef Kevin Binkley brings his own spirit, of course, and creates dishes with the quality and

seasonality of each ingredient in mind. These carefully crafted dishes manifest into a heart and soul warming experience. RESTAURANT IN BLOOM Flower Child finds its third home at Uptown Plaza BY GABBY RICHMAN

J

ust under two years ago, Fox Restaurant Concepts opened the doors to its first location of Flower Child. Now, they are introducing the healthy, fastcasual concept to a new area at their third location at Uptown Plaza, located at Central Avenue and Camelback Road, in Phoenix. “When we created Flower Child, people wanted convenience and healthy options so that’s where the fast-casual concept came from,” says Amber Haddad, director of operations at Fox Restaurant Concepts. The first two locations have a noticeably strong lunch crowd, a great after school following and a large to-go family audience, but this new Flower Child hopes to bring a steady in-restaurant dinner crowd, Haddad explains. The restaurant’s motto, “healthy food for a healthy world” truly embodies

the food they are serving. Their menu is comprised of fresh salads and wraps as well as vegetable and grain plates and bowls. Their proteins are raised naturally, without additives and they also prioritize local sourcing. The new location has expanded their beverage selection of local beers and organic wines, as well as added some additional dishes on their menu. For fall, they’ve created a few new sides that include ingredients like eggplant, spicy jalepenos, apples and autumn greens, just to name a few. They’ve also developed new seasonal salads and have some old favorites that are reappearing on the menu again. Flower Child will be expanding to California next, opening in 2016 in Santa Monica, California. 100 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; 480.212.0180. www.iamaflowerchild.com. UPTOWN |
