While not a mom myself, I’m surrounded by moms all the time. Whether I’m spending time with my own mom, my sister who is a mom to two little gingers, my new mother-in-law or other relatives like aunts and grandmas, they are everywhere I turn, excelling at home with their families and juggling other roles like full-time jobs, owning their own businesses and doing philanthropy work. Many of the subjects in our magazine are also moms, especially this month. We’re putting a big emphasis on local mompreneurs – aka mom entrepreneurs – who are paving the way in their various fields as well as spending their time and dedication to being mothers. Read about their passion for both of their roles as well as how they balance their time on page 28. In the spirit of Mother’s Day, we’re also sharing bonding activities to do with your mama (page 39), gifts for her (page 56), and all the glam products she needs for a girls’ night out (page 54). Heading out for a meal to celebrate all she does (or looking for a yummy meal with friends?), turn to page 74 for some of the best brunch dishes in town. And on page 71, you’ll find a dish from the new Farish House, a women-owned restaurant. As the weather heats up, you may be heading to the pool or to an ocean somewhere. Page 58 showcases some cute bathing suits to take with you, and on page 57, we feature handbags that will have you on vacay mode whether you’re in town or not. On the food front, we got to know rising star Ivan Jacobo of Anhelo (formerly Hidden Kitchen) on page 73 and we got the scoop on the new Meat the Ball restaurant at Biltmore Fashion Park on page 82. Lastly, page 55 showcases some awesome kitchen gadgets that’ll have you playing chef to make your own creations in no time. Dig in! Best,

PLANTING A FOUNDATION Stephanie Lucas helps children develop healthy eating habits with Give Garden

Making mealtime fun and nutritious for the whole family is exactly what Stephanie Lucas is doing through Give Garden – a guided culinary experience delivering monthly recipe boxes full of healthy ingredients for kids. The registered dietitian, wife and dedicated mother of two developed the concept as a way to

encourage mindfulness around healthy eating, connecting with others and supporting her community. Lucas focuses on keeping the boxes nutritious and packed with fruits and vegetables and she stands by research that says children are more likely to try a new food if they help play a part in

Uptown May ‘19

Pulse UP CLOSE the earlier children are engaged in learning about food, the better chance they have growing up enjoying a healthy variety of foods. “Children are natural explorers and fearless creators. We strive to expand their natural talents and cooking as a family creates opportunity to spend quality time with one another,” she says.

Changing the Game

creating it. All of Give Garden’s meal prep is kept to approximately 20 to 25 minutes to keep kids busy and not burden parents.

Statistics show that this is the most overweight, addicted and disconnected generation yet. Give Garden aims to create opportunities that focus on shifting the paradigm. During Lucas’ early gymnast days, she was required to support the team through fundraising. She thought it was a bit confusing that the coach encouraged healthy eating, yet they were selling cookie dough or having a bake sale to raise money. “I felt like there was a better way to host a food-based fundraiser that did not capitalize on junk food” Lucas explains. And she did find a better way. Give Garden houses dozens of charities and fundraisers in their database and up to 15 percent of a Give Garden membership is donated to charity. Community involvement has been at the heart of the businesses since day one. On top of it all, the company hosts educational nutrition events for children. One fun activity includes having children peddle on a stationary bike that powers a blender to create smoothies. There is also a classroom experience where children receive samples of unique produce and a can take a quiz for to test their knowledge of the healthy foods. So, why focus on children? Other than them being the future of the world, Lucas is often inspired by their laughter “To see that look of curiosity, excitement, joy, pride, satisfaction, and enjoyment on a child’s face while exploring a new Give Garden recipe is incredible,” she says.

Laying the Groundwork

Giving to All

The stepping stone to creating Give Garden started when Lucas was training as a competitive gymnast where she practiced 20 hours a week from a very young age. “It [gymnastics] required intense dedication and I had to learn to juggle the balance of school, friends, and training,” Lucas recalls. The vigorous schedule caused her to discover how her diet impacted the energy she needed to perform. Thus, the groundwork for her passion for nutrition was born. One summer while she was visiting home from college, she took up cooking with the help of her parents. This led her to explore cookbooks, gourmet websites, and local farmers markets. “Food to me is so much more than a meal,” Lucas explains. “It’s a creative outlet, an exploration, a chance to pass along family traditions, fuel for my children’s growing bodies, an excuse to connect with my family over the dinner table, and a reason to have friends over to celebrate life’s journey.” As she began to fall in love with cooking and eating amazing food, Lucas decided to share that gift with others and realized

The busy working mom doesn’t claim to be an expert at juggling a packed schedule. Though she was raised with a strong dose of the message that women can have it all, Lucas isn’t sure she believes it to be true. “I struggle to find the balance between throwing myself into my work and also having the energy left to be a supportive wife and mother,” she says. “Somedays I strike that balance in both work and at home, but most days one or the other gets the better end of that deal. I focus on quality not quantity of time with my family.” Lucas says she is grateful for date nights and one-on-one activities with her kids that give her a playful outlet away from work and leave her feeling revived and refreshed. The future of Give Garden is bright. The boxes will be featured on an Amazon Prime show in the fall and the company is expanding its Lunch Angel program to aid in the assistance of funding meals to schools in need. Give Garden will also be expanding its delivery to additional states in the near future. For more information, visit www.give.garden.

REPPING HER ROOTS Local artist Antoinette Cauley honors Phoenix with every brush stroke

BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

You won’t find anyone as proud of where they come from as Antoinette Cauley. Her veneration for Phoenix runs so deep that it inspires most of her paintings. “My work will always have a little Phoenix in it because that’s just a huge part of who I am,” she says. Having grown up in the middle of Arizona’s urban heart, hip-hop culture and West Coast-style rap music were permanent fixtures in her neighborhood and home. Cauley found refuge in her childhood bedroom listening to rappers like J.Cole and Nipsey Hussle while entertaining her creativity with a pencil and paper. She’s still creating and blasting rap with a social justice slant, just now as a full-time artist in her studio. “I find a lot of strength, wisdom and life lessons in rap music,” Cauley says. “It helped me grow as a human being.” It should come as no surprise that in her most recent collection, Ain’t Nobody Prayin’ For Me, the vibrancy of desert colors and hip-hop collide. Young girls covered in tattoos are common subjects in Cauley’s art. In this new collection, subjects are portrayed as some of rap industry’s greats. “[The story behind the collection is kind of complicated], but basically I felt like I had to grow up too fast and so I painted little girls who, on first glimpse, seem to have grown up too fast,” she explains. “Hip-hop just makes sense to me, so I trusted my gut and went with the idea.” Ain’t Nobody Prayin’ For Me is on display now through June 7 at monOrchid Gallery in the Roosevelt Row Arts District. Cauley intends to develop the collection with new concepts in the near future. In the meantime, you can catch her this month at The Sagrado, where she will showcase a special piece. Her art is gaining more traction each day. The recognition she is receiving, though awesome for her career, can be exhausting. That’s why self-care is of the essence for this artist in her spare time. “It's hard to be in the public eye so much sometimes, so I really cherish days that I get to just be alone at home in bed or on the couch binge watching a good show. I also love spending time with my family and close friends. They really feed my soul.” Cauley also spends her days passing on her knowledge to Valley youth, offering painting and color theory classes at different elementary schools a few times per month.

FROM SALES TO SATTVA Angie Hall quit her day job to follow her life’s passion

BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

In 2015, Angie Hall followed her gut instinct to quit her 16-year-long sales career to pursue yoga full time and she hasn’t looked back since. Hall was already a devoted yogi who taught classes for the better part of a decade. In 2015, she realized it was time to take her passion more seriously. She booked a ticket to India the next day and studied under Anand Mehrotra, one of the youngest master instructors of Sattva yoga. “By day three of training, I had an awakening. Something jolted my senses and heart wide open. From that moment on I saw the world through a completely different, much softer lens,” she recalls. Hall has since made the trip to Rishikesh, the birthplace of yoga, several times to hone her craft. Under her instructor’s guidance, she became fluent in Sattva, a holistic yoga practice that combines old techniques with new discoveries. “Anand’s teachings have completely changed my life,” Hall says. “It is my goal to bring [his teachings] to life so that others may experience a shift within themselves as well.” The Salt Lake City native has called the desert home for the past 23 years. The Biltmore area resident offers private classes in her backyard garden — Hall has quite the green thumb — and teachers two weekly public classes at The Space, a newly renovated wellness studio in Phoenix. She also leads yoga retreats throughout the year, and her next one, Bali Bliss retreat, will take place Aug. 17-24. Hall teaches Himalayan Kriya flow, which is a part of the Sattva lineage. Kriya is a form of meditation that awakens and expands energy in the body. In a Kriya flow class, instructors typically integrate movements with breath practices, chanting mantras out loud or a combination of both. “There comes a point where your job and your life merge, where there is no separation. Yoga is not just a practice for me anymore, but a way of being. The Kriya practices have given me a soft place to land, a place to soothe my soul and a place to return to the truth of my Being,” Hall says. “Finally, I am at a place that always feels like home.” To learn more, visit www.angiehallyoga.com.

Pulse HIS STYLE

DISHING OUT STYLE

Oliver Badgio’s ensembles are as sleek and sophisticated as the restaurants he represents BY BRITTANY MARONEY / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

Oliver Badgio has a carefully crafted sense of style, one he describes as “humbly sophisticated.” As the chief brand officer of high-end eateries including Steak 44, Ocean 44, Steak 48 and Dominick’s Steakhouse, he certainly has an image to uphold – one he takes seriously. “My style is appropriately dressy and respectful of the best in class reputation of the Mastro Family and their luxury restaurant brands,” Badgio says. “Most days I have the opportunity to be in one of the restaurants, so I usually wear a suit without a tie or a sport coat with casual pants and shirt. And, of course, my sneakers.” If Badgio has any weakness, it’s his fondness for old-school sneakers. In fact, he hasn’t worn a pair of dress shoes since 2007. “If someone opened my closet they would likely say, ‘Really, with the sneakers? You are kidding.’ I know, it’s a habit but there are worse habits to have,” he says. His professional attire paired with his favorite pair of sneakers balances his look for a blend of fun and sophistication, matching the restaurants he represents.

What do you love about your career? Working in a great family business and becoming a part of that family over the past 30 years is a very special and unique experience. There is nothing not to love and everything to be grateful for. How do you select your apparel? I’m 50-50, in store and online. I have a few favorite brands, such as Vince, Rag & Bone, Suitsupply and Spiritual Gangster. What is one accessory that you have way too much of? Cufflinks. There is nothing more unique, because there are so many different kinds. You hardly ever see anyone with the same pair. One of my favorite pairs is a set of typewriter keys from an old 1930s Corona, an “O” and a ”B” for my initials.

CREATIVE CALLING

Graphic designer Lauren Corallo uses her surroundings as fashion inspiration

BY GABBY LEIGHTON / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

Graphic designer Lauren Corallo works from home so you’ll typically find her in comfortable, casual clothing on a day-to-day basis, except when she’s in athletic wear for her daily workouts at Tricore or Urban Yoga and when she dresses up in a trendy top with a pair of boots for a client meeting. The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising graduate provides a broad range of design services for branding and marketing to her clients, which vary from musicians (including Incubus’ lead singer Brandon Boyd) and artists to local small-business owners and large corporate companies. Oftentimes it’s her clients who inspire her fashion sense. “Being surrounded by creative types, I love to see how my clients and peers style themselves. I am always browsing social media, too, for design and style inspiration,” she says. For Corallo, everything starts with the shoes. “I start with my shoes and then dress upward,” she says. “I have quite a shoe collection — just ask my boyfriend who I ‘share’ a closet with.” When headed out at night, the Arcadia native pairs booties or minimalist heels with high-waisted jeans and a cropped top or bodysuit, finishing with a couple of spritzes of her favorite Vince Camuto perfume.

Describe your style in a few words: Understated, feminine, edgy but chic. What is one accessory you can’t live without? Jewelry has such sentimental value for me. I always wear my gold necklace with my dad’s fingerprint engraved. He passed away two years ago and it’s how I always keep him close to my heart. Do you have a favorite pair of shoes? My go-to shoes are black suede booties from Jeffrey Campbell with a stacked wooden heel. They are so versatile and are great to wear from work to dinner to drinks.

TERESA YOUNG

Founder and CEO, TrueKonnect Children: Tressa, 23; Jaxon, 16 and Mason, 13

Tell us about your company. The vision of creating TrueKonnect began 2.5 years ago. TrueKonnect is an app designed to connect clients to their ideal hairstylist or makeup pro and vice versa. The algorithm matches you based on your personal preferences. With the Tinder-like swipe feature, the platform is easy to navigate your matches and quickly find the beauty pro you’re looking for. How do you balance motherhood and your career? I make sure that I always spend quality time with my children. I focus on incorporating my children in different aspects of the business. What is the best part of owning a business? It allows me to have a flexible work schedule so I don’t feel like I miss out on making memories with my children. Advice for other moms wanting to start a business: The time to start will never be perfect, and there will never be enough money. Follow your heart, build your dream career now, and allow passion to lead you to success! How have your children influenced you? I had my first baby at 20, my second baby had to have two brain surgeries, and my third was not planned. The birth of each child and the challenges that came with each child have taught me that no matter what obstacles I face in life, I can conquer, overcome, and come out stronger on the other side. I carry this into all areas of my life. Favorite thing to do with your kids: Eating dinner together while we talk and share our days. It’s the best time for me to bond with my children through open conversation and lots of laughter. What lesson do you hope to pass on to your kids? Instead of chasing money, accumulate skills. They will make you a person of value, and nobody will be able to take them away from you.

LESLIE LEHR Principal, All Your Ducks in A Row Children: Brooke, 14

Tell us about your company. All Your Ducks in A Row, which I started in 2017, inspires and creates organized design for homes. I believe when we eliminate clutter, we honor our home by creating a space that is welcoming and radiates pride, serenity, joy, relaxation and comfort. What inspired you to open your business? My husband encouraged me to follow my passion for organization, tidiness, style and function. I decided to celebrate my compulsion and embrace it. Now, I consider my need to organize as my passion rather than my compulsion. How do you balance motherhood and your career? The secret is to stay organized – all important business and family events are entered in the calendar immediately. I consider my family time as important as a business meeting. Last but not least, I seek help when needed. What is the best part of owning a business? The ability to follow my passion – time spent on my business does not feel like work. I love having the flexibility to spend time with my family and to balance my work and life. What motivates you? Creating and designing organized solutions that remove clutter and stress and replacing those with order and joy. Seeing the smiles on my clients’ faces when a project is completed is the best motivation. How has your child influenced you? Brooke gives me inspiration through her amazing style and talent for design. Her dedication, hard work, big heart, and sense of humor influence me every day. What lesson do you hope to pass on to Brooke? Follow the Lehr family mission: Be kind to others, be grateful, count your blessings daily, dream big, follow your passion, do your best every day, and never give up. Most valuable lesson you’ve learned in business: To be my most authentic self. Knowing and accepting who I am allows me to create organizational spaces that are stylish and functional.

NIKKI METZGER Owner, BODI Children: Mason, 1.5

Tell us about your company. BODI is a high-intensity strength and conditioning gym in Old Town Scottsdale. We opened our doors January 2014. Our goal is to make you feel strong, empowered and unstoppable! What inspired you to open your business? It’s been a dream of mine since I can remember. After a many discussions, this vision turned into a real possibility and my husband and I knew it was something we had to try or else we’d always regret it. Over the course of about a year, we began putting things together and saved every penny we had and just went for it. How do you balance motherhood and your career? It really is a balancing act and making sure you prioritize what needs to be done and setting certain times to get it done – especially since Mason doesn’t go to day care yet, so I’m a stay-at-home mom who also runs a business. What is the best part of owning your business? I get to do something I’m extremely passionate about and now that I’m a mom, it has given me the flexibility to spend time with my baby since I’m able to do a lot of work from home. What motivates you? Nothing is better than being a positive change in someone’s life and showing them how strong and capable they truly are. Advice for other moms wanting to start a business: Have a love and passion for what you are starting because it truly is like another child. Make sure your vision is clear. And trust in yourself. What lesson do you hope to pass on to Mason? To work hard and believe in yourself and to never settle for a career you are not passionate about. There are no dreams too big! Most valuable lesson you’ve learned in business: Life is about balance. Even when you love what you do, you need time to just turn off and be present.

BETH SCHUTTE Founder, The Little Monkey Company Children: Isabella, 11 and Penelope, 2

Tell us about your company. My idea for developing a high-neck baby bib began in March 2017, when I was feeding solids to [my daughter] Penelope. Her neck was breaking out in a rash and her clothes were getting stained because the bibs did not provide enough coverage. After searching the market and finding nothing, I decided to create my own. What inspired you to open your business? My fiance. When I told him my idea, his immediate reaction was, “Go for it!” How do you balance motherhood and your career? It’s important for me to be fully present with my girls because I know I won’t get these years back. I’ve learned to focus on the business while they are in school or sleeping. What motivates you? My daughters motivate me and keep me going every day. I know they are proud of what I’ve accomplished so far, which makes me want to continue to succeed and grow my business. Advice for other moms wanting to start a business: Know that anything is possible if you have passion and you are willing to put in the effort. Start with a checklist and focus on accomplishing one or two items a week. Before you know it, you will have checked those items off your list and you’ll be ready to get the next set done. How have your children influenced you? Penelope inspired the idea and Isabella offers input on everything from bib design to marketing. I also named two of the seven bibs after my daughters. What lesson do you hope to pass on to your children? Failures serve as motivation to help you move forward, and small achievements lead to big victories. Most valuable lesson you’ve learned since opening your business: When one door closes and someone tells you no, another door or two always opens.

SHANDEE CHERNOW CEO, CertiStar Children: Chase, 9 and Charlie, 6

Tell us about your company. CertiStar has taken food industry and food allergy data and matched it with patent-pending smart technology to create a web platform that helps restaurants manage their menus, recipes and inventory – all while empowering staff to serve those with food allergies. I founded the company in 2017. What inspired you to open your business? Frustration with my own experiences going out to eat. I’m frequently declined service due to my restrictions, and the conversation is almost always a challenge. Once I figured out that there’s a better way to do it, it was almost an inevitability that I had to start my own business to implement it. What is the best part of owning a business? Building something from the ground up that my family can be proud of. And, of course, having the freedom to make decisions as they come up. Advice for other moms wanting to start a business: Don’t underestimate the costs of opening a business. There are so many little line items that you don’t necessarily anticipate. Also, make it something that you’re passionate about doing. How have your children influenced you? When they see a way to do something or figure something out, they jump in with both feet. They are fearless that way. It’s a good reminder to do the same when I’m battling with which way to go. Favorite thing to do with your children: I love playing games with them. Watching how their brains work through the strategy is incredibly cool, and it’s a great way to spend bonding time. What lesson do you hope to pass on to your children? I hope they keep that fearlessness and do what they think is right and charge ahead with it. I hope they don’t let peer or societal pressure make them do something that strays from that path. Most valuable lesson you’ve learned since opening your business: To never be afraid to ask for help.

Knowledge. Support. Advocacy. That’s what makes the Down Syndrome Network of Arizona (DSNetwork) tick. The agency connects individuals and families touched by Down syndrome to an open, supportive and collaborative network full of helpful resources and information. It also offers a myriad of programs that serve all age groups affected by the genetic disorder. Throughout the year, DSNetwork hosts a handful of events that are not to be missed. Of them, Lights, Camera, Auction stands out. Now in its sixth year, Lights, Camera, Auction has become the DSNetwork’s premier spring fundraising event. One reason it’s become such a staple in the Valley is it’s fun nature. The event

takes on a festive-like atmosphere every year, offering exciting auctions, a casino royale, plenty of food and entertainment. On the latter, Urban Electra, an electric string duo, will get guests on their feet playing a mix of original tracks and chart toppers. Inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s renowned painting, this year’s theme is A Starry Night. The event’s venue, fittingly Phoenix Art Museum, will be transformed into the masterpiece for the occasion. Second, and most importantly, Lights, Camera, Auction helps DSNetwork continue to support more than 2,500 individuals in the community with Down syndrome and their families through parent outreach, early intervention programs, educational workshops, medical assistance and more.

There are many people behind the scenes that make DSNetwork the fruitful agency that it is. Those individuals will be the event’s honorees and recognized with an awards ceremony. Some awards include Outstanding Corporation and A Spark of Awesome Mom. “What I love most about attending Lights, Camera, Auction is the opportunity to gather together annually for the purpose of celebrating the accomplishments of members in our Arizona community who have demonstrated their strong commitment to the agency’s mission to educate, support and advocate for those in the Valley touched by Down syndrome,” says Jill Nico, vice chair or DSNetwork. “There is no other event like it!”

Luxe WHEELS

2019 ALFA ROMEO GIULIA A super sedan that’s stunning, powerful and mercilessly addicting BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: Base price: $38,295 Price as tested: $79,495

The very first things that strike you about the Italian-bred Alfa Romeo Giulia sports sedan are its stellar good looks, the way it sits on the ground, and its overall stage presence. The four-door Giulia comes in six flavors – five are powered by a 280-horsepower, 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine – and the Giulia Quadrifoglio tested here, powered by a monstrous 505-horsepower, 2.9-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 that goes from zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 191 mph. Both variants deliver flawless, irreproachable handling and ride quality wrapped in a centerfold-worthy body. Front and rear bumpers are short with body panels stretched tight across its muscular frame. The sloping hood beautifully connects to Alfa’s signature V-shaped grille, easily making it the best-looking vehicle in its segment. The upscale interior is expertly designed, with fine leather and soft-touch plastics taking centerstage in the cabin. The leather seats are comfortable and heavily bolstered with ample

adjustment options. The standard equipment is substantial, including an 8.8-inch touch screen with navigation, leather dash and upper doors; genuine carbon fiber trim; and a full range of advanced safety features. While its immense horsepower and rocket-sled acceleration is more than impressive, what really stands out is the sports car precise handling. It corners flat with virtually zero body roll. The steering is cutting-edge and the eightspeed automatic transmission is nearly perfect, especially when “dynamic” or “race mode” settings are engaged. Road noise is muted and the visibility is excellent. For some drivers, the powerful and precise Brembo brakes may feel a bit sensitive, but the agile, highly-tuned steering makes up for any flaws. The Giulia is a beacon for those willing to forego any of the cliche luxurious, subjacent sedans from BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. Those who carve their own path with the Alfa Romeo will be more than well-rewarded.

VITICULTURE VISIONARIES Winning wines created by women

In 1804, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin was left a widow, or “veuve” in French. At just 27, she was left in control of a company with holdings in banking, wool trading and the Bouzy Vineyards in France. Rather than sell the vineyard business and live off the resulting fortune, Madame Clicquot — who was audacious for her time — secured funding and invested in research and development of Champagne. The result: Veuve Clicquot. Two hundred years later, it is still among the most popular brands on the planet. Today, women like Madame Clicquot continue to take the winemaking industry by storm with award-winning options in every varietal. Here are some of our favorites.

2017 Pianetta Winery Jug Wine Everything about this wine made by Caitlin Pianetta – including the conversation piece bottle – is special. Developed to bring unpretentious quality to old-school table wine, this medium-bodied blend has bold blackberry and mild pepper notes with light acidity. $24. www.pianettawinery.com.

2014 Mancini Zinfandel Owner and winemaker Carol Shelton plants the nearly 100-yearold Mancini Vineyard in the Old World method of “mixed planting,” wherein she plants a variety of vines to create true field blends. The result is this complex knockout zinfandel that explodes with oak, vanilla, blueberry in every sip. $38. www.carolshelton.com.

2017 Dorothy Jean Chardonnay This chardonnay is from a womanowned winery with a female winemaker, and the label was designed by a woman (the trifecta!). A combination of earthy oak and ripe fruits, it is exceptionally silky and perfect for a day in the spring sun. $38. www.dorothyjeanwines.com.

2017 Orr Wines Old Vines Chenin Blanc Erica Orr’s Washington Chenin Blanc is always hand-picked and whole cluster pressed. Expect kiwi and honeydew on the nose, and then a touch of cucumber and earthiness upon tasting. $25. www.orrwines.com.

Thomson & Scott Skinny Prosecco NV Founded by former journalist Amanda Thomson, this vegan and organic credentialed prosecco out of the United Kingdom is the made with as little intervention as possible in the production process. Flavors include honeysuckle, green apple and lemon zest. $24.99. www.thomsonandscott.com. 2016 Pelletiere Estate Nebbiolo This Paso Robles vineyard by Janis Denner is known for Italian-inspired varietals. Her vibrant Nebbiolo offers juicy berry on the nose, including raspberry, and has a full-bodied taste in perfect balance with the delicate fruit flavors. $58. www.pelletiere.com.

2015 Dama Wines Cowgirl Cab This big, juicy 100% cabernet sauvignon by Dama founder Mary Derby is one to be enjoyed on its own or with a great steak hot off the grill. Amista Vineyards Sparkling Grenache Winemaker Ashley Herzberg makes every bottle of this Grenache sparkle – literally – using the Méthode Champenoise, the process used to make French Champagne. Downtown Phoenix’s historic Farish House has new residents. Chef-owner Lori Hassler turned the home into a restaurant by building a commercial kitchen into the little house out back and restoring the dining area to its turn of the century style. To honor of the history of the home, Hassler serves her own renditions of international comfort classics. One of her unique offerings, inspired by The Sound of Music’s iconic song My Favorite Things, is the Bitter and Blue Salad ($12), featuring some of Hassler’s favorite ingredients. Hitting all your senses at once, the refreshing dish brings bitter, tangy, sweet, and salty flavors with crunchy and creamy textures . It’s made with bitter greens, radicchio, fennel, endive leaves, gorgonzola dolce and pecans, finished with an orange marmelade vinaigrette. 816 N. 3rd St., Phoenix; 602.281.6659; www.farishhouse.com. Provision Coffee Bar’s take on a Southside is delicious in all directions

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Since opening earlier this year, Provision has quickly made a name for itself as a premier local coffee roaster. More recently, the locally owned business has been making headlines for its cocktail program as well. “We take as much pride in our massive cocktail menu as we do in our coffee cocktail offerings,” says Bar Manager Erika Middleton-Sharpe. “We have a classic menu featuring nine of our favorite mainstays from Negronis to mai tais. Then, we offer an amaro menu, which are aperitifs and digestifs. Guests can order one by itself, or choose to do an amaro flight.” Then, according to Middleton-Sharpe, is her favorite: a killer lineup of signature cocktails that includes a variety of imaginative recipes they’ve dreamt to blow guests’ minds. One of those cocktails: The Bergamot ($12). “It’s a twist on the Southside, which is traditionally made with gin, lime juice, simple syrup and mint,” Middleton-Sharpe says. Provision’s version features Leopold's Summer Gin, which has bright citrus and rich botanicals. Then, they add a combination of Yellow Chartreuse, which is milder and sweeter than Green Chartreuse, along with Earl Grey simple syrup and special edition Bergamot bitters from Scrappy’s Bitters. “We combine all elements in shaker. Before straining into a coupe glass and garnishing with edible flowers, we spray the glass with the Bergamot bitters,” she says. “Once we strain into the glass, we spray it again with the bitters and garnish.” It is refreshing, with botanical elements balancing the lime. Plus, it looks like spring in a glass. Provision Coffee Bar, 4501 N. 32nd St., Phoenix; 602.626.3866; www.provisioncoffee.com.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Ivan Jacobo of Anhelo

Chef Ivan Jacobo is the executive chef at Anhelo (formerly Hidden Kitchen), a community restaurant born out of his uber-popular supper clubs that serves contemporary American cuisine. His mission, beyond delivering amazing food, is to use his restaurant to help elevate others via charitable fundraising, providing educational opportunities for culinary students and more.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY ELIZABETH MARIE

When did you first step into a kitchen? To do more than eat? That would be on my first day of culinary school in 2009 at age 18. How is that possible? I come from a very traditional Mexican household – my mother was the CEO of our kitchen. That meant the rest of us stayed out. But in high school, I loved both watching the Food Network and working on cars, so I decided to study one as my career. I literally asked a group of girls at school who they would rather date – a mechanic or chef – and chef won. Tell us about your early days in the kitchen? To make extra money during culinary school, I began working under chef Steven Maynard at Verrado Country Club. We clicked. I eventually left school to take an opportunity in San Francisco, then moved back when Maynard asked me to be his sous chef at Tempo Urban Bistro in 2014. When did you first decide to go out on your own? In 2015, I launched my own food truck: 319 The Truck. “319” is March 19, which is the first day I ever cooked. We had tremendous success until we were the victims of a horrific car crash, decimating business during high season in 2016. So, I began doing pop-up dinners across the Valley. By late 2018, we were selling them out in four minutes flat, often with proceeds helping local charities. Tell us about Anhelo: Our goal is to bring people together at our community table for “Sunday Supper” types of culinary experiences, with the goal of getting folks to put down their phones and enjoy time with food, friends and us. I also have a second goal: to help people through food. Literally. I am going to offer culinary scholarships with a portion of funds we make from our restaurant, as well as to give back to local nonprofits through fundraising dinners. Why the name change? “Anhelo” means “wanting,” “desiring” or “longing” in Spanish. We want for you to desire to spend time with us, wanting all of our food and longing to come back. Anhelo, 628 E. Adams St., Phoenix; 602.596.7745; www.anhelorestaurant.com.

MORNING GLORY Exceptional eats to munch during brunch BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

The Hangover

Breadwinner Knockout Sandwiches This two-fisted brunch feast has two fried eggs, griddled country ham, Manchego cheese, romaine, Roma tomatoes and aji amarillo aioli. It’s all piled high between a fluffy, freshly baked buttermilk bun. $10. www.breadwinnerphx.com.

Chop & Chick

Matt’s Big Breakfast A Food Network favorite that has been dubbed “the real thing” by Guy Fieri of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, the savory meal is equipped with two eggs and a skillet-seared Iowa pork rib chop. It may sound simple, but the Chop & Chick will take your taste buds on a trip unlike any dish before. $11.95. www.mattsbigbreakfast.com.

Tres Leches French Toast

Provecho Comida de mi Tierra This south-of-the-border twist on French toast features thick slices of bread soaked in decadent tres leches batter. It’s all topped with agave honey and dusted with cinnamon. $8. www.provechoaz.com.

Buttermilk Biscuit & Chorizo Sausage Sandwich

Southern Rail Prepare for an American classic with a bit of a Southern twist. The breakfast sandwich is made on a toasted buttermilk biscuit that is topped with a chorizo sausage patty, green apple slaw, tomato and aioli. $12. www.southernrailaz.com.

Cristina’s Tamale Cakes

Hash Kitchen The tangy, slightly spicy, Mexican spin on a classic eggs Benedict is made of sweet corn cakes, green chili pork and poached eggs topped with a green chili-infused hollandaise sauce. It is served inside a traditional tamale corn husk alongside hash potatoes. $14. www.hashkitchen.com.

Guild Torta Whoever awarded breakfast the title of “most important meal of the day” clearly never had brunch. From salty and savory to spicy and sweet, the brunches around town are in a class all their own. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself – or your mom – to one of more of these delectable brunch options on Mother’s Day, or any day. While some Valley restaurants serve brunch all day (score!), brunch hours and days vary, so call each venue or check online for specific brunch times.

MANGIA!

Come meet Meat the Ball at Biltmore Fashion Park

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Stefano Fabbri has been making quite a name for himself on the local culinary scene over the past several years. As owner of Pomo Restaurant Group, concepts he already has cooking in Phoenix include multiple Pomo Pizzeria locations, Luna Gelateria and Mora Italian. And he’s not done yet. “My newest venture, Meat the Ball, opened in late March at Biltmore Fashion Park,” Fabbri says. “I call it my mini restaurant with a big personality.” His goal is to give guests Italian-flared recipes prepared with locally sourced and organic products to celebrate today’s healthy dining, Italian style. “Our menu, of course, includes a meatball lineup consisting of spicy sausage, salmon, veal, cauliflower and more. In addition to the unique meatball options, the restaurant offers appetizers, handmade pastas, salads, sandwiches, soups, salads and desserts,” says Fabbri, noting there are both meatball entrees with sides as well as 10 a la cart types of meatballs, which come three to an order.

82

Uptown May ‘19

Insider tip: try the short rib and the eggplant meatballs. “It should also be noted that we use organic meat, wild-caught fish, and grassfed beef. We’re making choices with farmers, animals, the environment – and you – in mind,” Fabbri says. The drink menu has been crafted with similar attention to detail. There are nearly 20 wines by the glass and more than two dozen wines by the bottle, both from Italy as well as popular regions across California, Oregon, France, Germany and others. All of the beers on tap, save for Peroni, are local including options from Huss Brewing, Prescott Brewery and Four Peaks. Meat the Ball also offers canned beers, ciders and seasonal brews that change regularly. In addition to beer and wine, there are a dozen cocktails ranging in price from $7 to $12, several with Italian inspiration but fan favorites including margaritas and Manhattans as well. The spotlight cocktail is Meat the Ball’s Aperol Spritz ($11), an Italian-invented drink celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019. Aperol, slightly sweet and slightly bitter, was invented in Padua, Italy in 1919 and showcased at the Padua International Fair. It was added to a cocktail that dates back to the 1880s when Austria-Hungary occupied Northeastern Italy and, just like that, an Italian classic was born. “Our space is just as classic as that cocktail, but in a completely different way,” Fabbri explains. “Our small but mighty 1,500 square feet must be seen to be believed. The vibe is audaciously retro, in a good way. Think quirky decor bursting with pop art and nostalgia.” Guests who prefer a little entertainment with their meal can enjoy front-row seats along the kitchen-bar combination counter, where they can see the magic happen as well as get served directly by the chef himself. Meat the Ball is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Happy hour is offered weekdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and features deep drink and a la cart meatball discounts. Meat the Ball, located at 2502 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; 602.954.5278; www.meattheball.com.
