MICHAEL FITZMAURICE, MD Founder of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute Double Board Certified Hand Surgeon

Life and work won’t stop, even when the pain of carpal tunnel syndrome stops you. The tingling, numbness, weakness, and pain caused by compressed nerve fibers inside the wrist can interfere with everyday activities, and ultimately disrupt your overall quality of life. Nationally-distinguished expert hand surgeon Dr. Michael Fitzmaurice has designed a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive system to treat carpal tunnel syndrome more effectively than ever. Available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute in Phoenix, the EndoTech® Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release System uses sophisticated endoscopic surgery techniques for smaller incisions, greater precision, and more accuracy in relieving the compressed nerves. With EndoTech, patients can expect to return to driving or typing that novel in as little as two days

ou never know when you’re going to catch your big break – the one that allows you to live out your dream, doing what you’ve always wanted to. That moment happened this month’s cover feature, Nisha Kataria. Kataria, a local Phoenix singer, got the big break she had always wanted. She moved to California, began recording and planned on touring across Europe – until everything suddenly changed right before her eyes. On page 34, she’s telling us all about her journey to find her sound again and how she is making it on her own without the help of a big recording label behind her. Speaking of people living out their dream jobs, we’re profiling seven local bartenders on page 38 doing just that. They’re spilling the scoop on their favorite cocktails to indulge in (and drink), and telling us all about celebrity sightings at their iconic restaurants and bars, as well as some funny stories from those nights that turned into mornings. We’re also covering all of your spring basics: from stylish sunglasses (page 62) and patterned shorts (page 63), to garden accessories and tools (page 61). Need something refreshing after that morning jog or looking to cool down from walking around in the warm weather? Check out the places we are highlighting in the Valley that are switching up the classic mimosa with unique additions (page 78), and forget that smoothie you were on your way to get and trade it in for an acai bowl at one of the fast-casual restaurants we are splotlighting on page 80. H AND SURGEON MICH AEL FITZMAUR ICE, MD Founder of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute Double Board CertiďŹ ed Hand Surgeon

Dr. Fitzmaurice has performed thousands of minimally-invasive, endoscopic hand procedures in Arizona over the last decade.

You never appreciate how important the thumb is to regular activities until a tendon injury compromises movement. Repetitive motion from everyday activities such as typing on a laptop or playing a favorite sport, can lead to swelling and inflammation of the tendon sheath, the condition known as De Quervains Tendinitis. This causes pain and limited mobility of the wrist and thumb.

Developed by board certified hand surgeon Michael Fitzmaurice, M.D., and available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute in Phoenix, Endotech uses a small incision and endoscope to repair the injured tendons. Most patients experience immediate relief and improved movement immediately following the procedure, and can return to work in as little as one week!

De Quervains Tendinitis can now be treated by the state of the art, minimally invasive EndoTech Endoscopic De Quervains Release System.

COMING FULL CIRCLE

Nate Lowrie’s ties to Maricopa Integrated Health System BY KELLY POTTS PHOTOS BY MARK MORGAN

up close Lowrie, who has a background in computers, finance, and business management, would not be the leader and businessman he is today if it wasn’t for the healthcare and doctors at Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS). When he was a student at Arizona State University around 20 years ago, he was in an accident that lacerated his face so he went to Maricopa Medical Center for treatment. As a student working as a server, Lowrie didn’t have insurance or money to pay for the services he received at MIHS. The doctors at MIHS took care of him and told him not to worry about payment, and since that day Lowrie swore he would repay them for their generosity. “It just comes down to giving back,” Lowrie says. “As a Valley native, I didn’t realize that these services were available until I needed them, and I’m forever thankful that they were there for me.” The Maricopa Health Foundation (MHF), which is the philanthropic arm of MIHS, provides direct support to the patients who need it most and often have nowhere else to turn. Enhancing the quality of medical care and level of comfort for patients and their families during periods of intense hardship makes an enormous impact on the lives of those affected, and that is exactly what it did for Lowrie in his time of need. After graduating, Lowrie opened and sold a few businesses (including local favorite, Zoës Kitchen), but he was also always committed to giving back to the organization that helped him out the most. Lowrie was invited to join the MHF board as the president, and recently took over as the CEO for the foundation. Lowrie says he plans to revamp and raise the stature and fundraising capability of the MHF to help provide the hospital with the much needed funds to take care of those in our community who cannot pay for healthcare services. MHF generates financial support for critical initiatives at MIHS through fundraising, charitable gifts and securing grants. The MHF raises money to support patients, strengthen medical education and research programs, and perform

health-related community outreach in Maricopa County. “The culture we have here is amazing,” Lowrie says. “We are coming together as a community more to make a difference. And that’s all that matters at the end of the day – making a difference that goes beyond you, and helping so many people who need it everyday.” MIHS is the health care safety net for citizens of Maricopa County. MIHS includes the Maricopa Medical Center, Arizona Burn Center, Level I Trauma Center, Arizona Children’s Center, two behavioral health centers,

Comprehensive Healthcare Center, McDowell Healthcare Center for people with HIV/AIDS and 12 communityoriented family health centers. Maricopa Medical Center is also a premier training center for the nation’s physicians and ensures that health care is available to all area residents, giving paying and non-paying patients access to top quality medical care. Some could say the story has come full circle, and Lowrie has no doubt already repaid his debt to the hospital that helped him when he needed it most. For more information, visit www.mihs.org.

THE HEALING POWER OF HAPPINESS

Patty Kogutek’s distinctive style serves others BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

W

hen people consider the term “nun,” they often visualize a woman donning a black tuni and ornate veil, holding rosary beads. Patty Kogutek is quite different from this linear perspective. On the cover of her highly acclaimed book, “A Change of Habit: A Spiritual Journey from Sister Kateri to Sister Mary Vodka,” stands a nun in pink stiletto pumps – a depiction that encapsulates Kogutek’s quirky style as well as her spirit of living to help others. After seven years of service in a convent, Kogutek (www.pattykogutek.com) decided to serve as a layperson in hopes to discover happiness and peace that was previously lacking. Her book has helped thousands cure their anxiety by living guilt-free and discovering their own happiness by following their own Voices of Intentional Beckoning Emotions (VIBES). Not only has her book healed the lives of its readers, but she also continues to help others with her interactive workshops, speeches and coaching seminars. “I want people to walk away [from my workshops] encouraged, empowered, and enlightened on their own journeys,” she says.

Etc.

What motivated you to share your story with the world in your book? Reluctantly I finally shared my “nun secret” in my book, after several signs from the Universe, to help other “guilt sponges” to kick the habit guilt, living to please others, to find happiness. I want to inspire people giving them the courage and freedom to live life on their own terms, and STILL please God. What did you love most about your time as a nun? The faith the everything works out for the best…eventually. What inspires you? Finding God in my every day happenings. Miracles surround us if we are mind-full of their presence. UPTOWN |

THE SANDWICH QUEEN

Carole Meyer’s road to ZOOKZ BY GABBY RICHMAN PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

I

t all started in the kitchen of a home in North Africa, where Carole Meyer’s family was all about cooking food from scratch. “The kitchen was the center of the household, and it was my favorite place to be,” Meyer says. “I loved the smells, the sounds, the stories – it was an adventure for me at a very young age – forever capturing my imagination.” Meyer’s grandmother made toasted sandwiches using a handheld device for her when she was a young girl, and those memories of flavors and fun stayed with her. In fact, even after Meyer opened her own catering business and produced a line of salad dressings that were sold in AJ’s Fine Foods, she still came back to those delicious, crunchy and warm sandwiches. So, she decided that those “sandwiches with an edge” needed to be shared with the world and, after trial and error, she successfully recreated an electric version of her grandmother’s machine. That’s when ZOOKZ was born. The fast-casual concept, which serves up unique breakfast, salad and toasted sandwich combinations, is a growing staple in the Uptown area. 100 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; 602.279.0906; www.zookzsandwiches.com

Etc.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Free time? I have not had much of that in the 3 ½ years since I opened ZOOKZ. When we can cobble a few days together, my husband and I love to travel. I enjoy reading, working out and spending time with my family. What is your favorite ZOOKZ sandwich recipe on the menu? It changes, but this week I have been on a No. 10 kick – parmesan cheese, turkey, apples, cranberries and roasted almonds topped with our Sweet Heat mustard.

F KETONYA BANKSTON The woman whose style never sleeps BY GABBY RICHMAN PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

or Ketonya Bankston, fashion and beauty is who she is – her profession and her passion. Bankston is one of the co-founders (along with her twin brothers) of Style Stalkers, LLC, (www.stylestalkersblog.com) a monthly blog turned fashion consulting firm that offers an array of fashion and styling services. She is also a professional model and makeup artist. Bankston’s mother was involved in the fashion and beauty industry and ever since she was a young girl in pageants or playing dress up, Bankston knew looking her best and helping others do so was her calling. Although this fashionista describes her style as “very fashion-forward with an added classic touch,” she also loves going vintage and doesn’t need an occasion to dress up. “The sidewalk is my runway! I simply dress how I feel,” she says. Bankston’s style varies but you might find her in various shades of black or sporting a dress. She always wears heels (unless she’s at the gym), and you’ll never spot her in sweatpants. Some of Bankston’s favorite brands include (but are most certainly not limited to) Diane Von Furstenberg, Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Siriano, Louis Vuitton, Elisabetta Franchi and local brands, Black Russian Label and Lousy Rich. Her favorite shopping locales range from Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom to local boutiques, Buffalo Exchange and Savers.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I love spending time with my family in my free-time since it’s so limited! Time is something in life that we can’t get back so I try to make the best of my time and use it wisely. What do you love about being in the fashion and beauty industry? The fashion and beauty industry is one of the few industries where freedom of expression is truly accepted and I love expressing myself through beauty, fashion and makeup! The possibilities are truly limitless… UPTOWN |

A JASON KEY

Laid back and traditional BY GABBY RICHMAN PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

s someone who has been in the restaurant business for over 20 years – starting as a dishwasher at age 15, working his way up to the front of the house, and then being employeed at one of the best restaurants in the country – it’s pretty clear that Jason Key has paid his dues and earned his position today. Key recently opened The Kettle Black Kitchen & Pub, (TKB) a comfortable yet elevated American gastro pub, along with business partners Tom Montgomery, Jim Culleton, Harry St. Pierre and chef Danny Conejo. Key is the front of house point man, making guests feel their best at the Phoenix spot. Working in a pub atmosphere allows Key’s style to be more comfortable than that of a typical desk job. You can usually find him sporting a pair of jeans, with a button-down or V-neck T-shirt and a pair of Vans or Nikes. Some of Key’s favorite brands include Polo Ralph Lauren, Kenneth Cole and Nixon for watches. Although he doesn’t have too much time to shop, he frequents Macy’s and Nordstrom when he can.

What do you enjoy doing on your free time? Hanging with my 3-year-old daughter Adelynn any chance I can get. She is so much fun and the reason I get up every day and work hard. I also like trying new restaurants here in the Valley. I enjoy all types of food and wine, craft beer and spending time with my friends and family. What do you hope TKB brings to the neighborhood? We just want to have a place where locals and tourists alike can come to, have a great beer, a craft cocktail, some delicious food and feel welcomed each and every time they visit. We want them to feel like it's their pub or a home away from home. Something familiar and comfortable. Something the neighborhood people can recommend to out-of-towners. UPTOWN |

With over three decades in the auto industry under his belt, Shahe Koulloukian, owner of Mazvo Auto Car Care Center, has seen a lot of changes in the business. But as much as the cars have changed, his commitment to one solid set of principles – honestly and integrity – has stayed the same. In a world where auto mechanics are often viewed as untrustworthy crooks, ready to swindle their customers into unnecessary repairs, Shahe goes to great lengths to build a foundation of trust. He wants his clients to feel confident in the knowledge that they’re getting only what they need. “The key is to find an auto repair business that is morally connected with their mechanics,” says Shahe. “It’s crucial that an auto repair facility not only empowers their customers with the fundamentals of auto repair, but educates their employees to commit to solving, not selling.” A mechanic can tell you that the clunking sound you hear means your car needs thousands of dollars’ worth of repairs. But how can you tell whether the problem was diagnosed correctly, and what price is fair? Shahe has some professional tips on seeking out an auto repair shop that is truly concerned about more than just their bottom line – and getting the most service for your money. Ask for referrals. If an auto shop’s service and quality of work results in a positive experience, people tell their friends, families, and co-workers – so ask around. Don’t mind waiting. If a repair shop can’t fit you into its schedule immediately, you may be inclined to go elsewhere. But a bit of a wait is

actually a good sign; it typically means that the shop is not only servicing a lot of customers, but also taking the time to ensure quality. Watch for the fright factor. If a mechanic says something like, “I wouldn’t drive this car another mile,” or employs other scare tactics to discourage you from leaving, you should probably do just that. Be honest. Yes, truthfulness is important for an auto mechanic, but it’s also important for the customer. It may be a bit embarrassing to admit that you’ve been slacking on routine maintenance, or that you recently had your car worked on at a different shop, but the more “back story” your mechanic knows, the better off you’ll be. Hiding symptoms may result in additional diagnoses (which cost money) or worse, incomplete or improper repair. Your mechanic can’t read your mind, so the more information you can share, the better. Add-ons aren’t always necessary. If you take your vehicle in for an oil leak and the shop starts pushing engine flushes or transmission additives without asking you about your maintenance history, head to the door. Fluid services should be performed according to the vehicle manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. Taking your vehicle to a new mechanic for repairs is an exercise in trust and communication – it isn’t always easy to tell the good from the bad. But when your auto shop is up-front about your repairs and empowers you with knowledge, you’ve found a keeper. “I have made it my mission to educate my customers, one car repair at a time,” says Shahe of his services at Mazvo. “There are many auto shops who talk a lot without really saying anything.”

Nisha Kataria, Singing a New Tune LOCAL RECORDING STAR SETS OUT ON HER OWN

UPTOWN |

P

hoenix is quickly becoming a mecca for recording artists and for Valley woman Nisha Kataria, that is music to her ears. The local singing sensation is no stranger to the music world but is now taking things out on her own for the first time, giving it a go without the support of a major label. One can’t take a look at where Kataria is going without taking a look at her past.

“I am a big believer in destiny, things don’t just happen, they happen for a reason,” Kataria says. When Kataria was a young girl growing up here in the Valley, she attended the Arizona State Fair with her family – little did she know that fun visit would end up changing her entire life. Walking to the car with her parents and siblings, her father enticed her to sing a song and after much prompting, Kataria finally gave in. A gentleman also in the parking lot heard her singing and came up to the family to ask who had been signing. Kataria’s father, always proud of his girl, quickly pointed her out and even shared a demo tape with him (which they always carried in the car with them). As it turns out, that man was a good friend of Michael Jackson’s manager and things snowballed from there. “We got a call a day and a half later and I guess that his manager, Dexter, played Michael the demo and he really liked it and wanted to meet me,” Kataria says. “We ended up driving to Neverland the very next day and it just escalated from there and I remember everything and it was just so surreal.” Kataria says that her first visit to Neverland was better than Disneyland – it was like living in a fairytale. She and her mother were brought into a library to meet Jackson and when he came into the room to meet her for the first time, he refused to give her a handshake, rather, he gave her a big hug saying that they hug in that family. He asked her to sing for him and she says that he told her she has the voice of an angel. After that meeting, life quickly changed for Kataria. She and her mother were asked by Jackson to move into Neverland and she began working to record and then tour in Europe. Then, life quickly changed again. Kataria was set to be on tour with the King of Pop when he suddenly died in 2009. Jackson’s death forced Kataria to take a look at life back in the U.S. without Jackson helping pave the way. Like many aspiring recording artists out there today, Kataria thought the next best course of action might be to try her hand at some of the big reality TV talent shows.

“At one point in my life, I had the way of thinking that I needed the big record deal to make it, I needed shows like ‘[The] X Factor’ and ‘American Idol,’ and, at the time, I had this story – the Michael Jackson connection, so I thought it was the perfect time to go out and see if the iron was still hot,” Kataria says. Her talent, fan support and story did take her through several rounds of both shows, but, for Kataria, she believes this really wasn’t the way things were meant to be. “Everyone knew I was Michael’s protégé and with these shows, I think they all have some sort of agenda, so if you go in there not fully understanding that and knowing from the beginning exactly what is going on, it is a bad experience,” Kataria says. It wasn’t all for nothing, she says though. Kataria says she did learn some valuable lessons through the process. “The moral here for me and one that I want to share with others, is that for every boy and girl who wants to become a singer, you don’t need the big record label, you don’t need someone else to tell you that you are allowed to do it or not allowed to do it, you can make that decision on your own,” she says. Since the shows ended, Kataria has taken a new look at life both personally and musically. She is focused on what she can accomplish on her own and how she can take control. “My goals are to just keep control of everything that I put out,” she explains. “With a label, you lose control of your creative style and I wanted my music to be about me. Now that it is in my own hands, I get to put out my own kind of songs, I am the vision behind my music and I can cater more to what my fans are looking for.” As for her music, Kataria is moving ahead full steam. The singer, who focuses on a style which is very much Bollywood meets Hollywood, there is no resting now. “I just released my second single and am doing it all on the local scene now. It is very exciting and I can’t wait to see how it is received by the fans,” she says.

While the natural star knows she did things in a backwards sort of way, starting with Michael Jackson and the record label at a young age, and now working on her own without a label, she says she is very excited to see what the future holds. “I’m digging the music scene here, It’s opening my horizons and I’m discovering there is a market here for people who enjoy local music and it is a very exciting time,” she explains. While, musically, Kataria is putting her own music out without a label, she is by no means alone. She is doing all of this with the huge support of her family and friends. Kataria is still living with family in Phoenix, giving her a support system all the time: to lean on in tough times and to celebrate the good times as well. Quite simply, Kataria says she would be no where without them. “I would be nothing and have nothing without the support of my mom and dad,” she says. “They have been super supportive and none of this, my past and today, would have been possible without my parents pushing me and standing by me through it all. They have kept me going.” And, much like the energizer bunny, she plans to keep going and going, with no end in sight. For Kataria, this is her life and she is going to live it to the fullest. “My most recent way of thinking is that life is a gift and when one thing doesn’t work out, there is always something else out there for you,” she explains. “Life is short, so spend it with good people, doing things that you love. It is no longer about dreaming the impossible dream, it is about living that dream with the gifts that are around you.” Kataria is certainly focused on moving forward and living life to the fullest. She recently released her music video for her second single, “Riot” and is working on her next big hit, “Love’s Crazy,” which is scheduled to be released sometime later this year. If you would like to hear her music, you can download “Riot” from iTunes or hear it on her Facebook page, THENishaKataria. Head to Instagram to follow her @NishaKataria.

7 Valley bartenders share their most memorable moments

It’s a well-known sentiment that bartending lends itself to overhearing interesting (to say the least!) conversations over cocktails. Bartenders play many roles – as artists of their craft, they also serve others, listen to customers’ needs and do so with eager eyes upon them. You could even go so far as to say bartenders are the generous friend or sounding board someone needs. We talked with bartenders at seven locally loved bars who see their fair share of notable people and have no shortage of intriguing stories to share. But no matter the person or the tale, the commonality is that these bartenders always keep their cool with the utmost dedication to their craft, chalking up each day or night behind the bar as an opportunity for creativity and community, and perhaps a few laughs too.

Steen Olson

At 7:06 p.m. on Nov. 19, Obadiah Parker was entertaining locals and visitors at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch. His soulful vocals and ability to cover a variety of tunes have earned him a strong following. PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

A

Z88’s Steen Olson has been at the helm of the restaurant’s bar for 13 years, as both a bartender and manager, and he’s been in the industry for more than double that. His first bartending job began at now-closed Greasewood Flat 27 years ago and he says he’s never looked back. A Valley native, Olson says he feels very rewarded to be at a place like AZ88 that has lasted for so many years (since 1988, in fact), giving a nod to owner Karl Kopp for always encouraging his team’s success. “I am the most fortuitous bartender in town to be able to master my craft with a great staff and the best bar-backs in

Scottsdale,” he says. Olson promises he makes a mean sidecar, perfect for Arizona’s spring weather, but he shares that his favorite cocktail to make is an Old Fashioned. This cocktail is comprised of Makers Mark, Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur and Peychaud’s Bitters, all aged in American oak for 21 days. Olson then pours the concoction over ice, muddled with cherries and fresh sliced orange, and adds a personal twist – he tops it with ginger beer instead of soda. Ask Olson for his specialty the next time you drop by for dinner and a drink. Olson notes AZ88 sees its fair share of high profile individuals, some of the APRIL 2016 |

nicest and most down to earth being baseball players Cody Ross and Dontrelle Willis. We also got the low down on one of Olson’s most memorable stories about a guest. “Slash [the lead guitarist] from Guns N’ Roses came in with his wife or girlfriend at the time. I will never forget what he ordered: an ice cream sundae and a Kettle One martini straight up with olives. He then proceeded to draw cartoons on the beverage naps. Needless to say, he was very gracious and entertaining.” AZ88, 7353 Scottsdale Mall, Scottsdale; 480.994.5576; www.az88.com.

The Duce

Patrick Kenger

T

he Duce is a fun downtown hangout where anyone is welcome to grab a drink, play some cornhole or hit the dance floor. This eclectic spot has something for everyone, which is why Arizona native Patrick Kenger joined the bartending team at The Duce just under four years ago. The bar manager started in the industry as a student at Arizona State University – first bussing tables, then working as a barback, which turned into promotional work for nightclubs and finally led to bartending. “During that time I developed a true passion for the craft and even after graduating I knew I wanted to be a part of the service industry for a long time,” he says. Kenger enjoys the technical skills

involved in making a cocktail (especially one he can shake the hell out of), but he also says he loves the role he can play in someone’s night in-between ordering drinks. The Duce has been hosting the Phoenix Suns’ Christmas party for the past few years, where the players and their families come in for a good time – which you can imagine produce a few juicy stories. Being a big Suns fan, Kenger tries to work all of the parties and at one of them a few years back, noticed a kid sitting down at the end of the bar hunched over. “I thought he was one of the player’s kids, but I didn’t pay much attention,” he explains. “I finally got over to him and quickly asked if he wanted a soda or UPTOWN |

something. He stands up and I realized I was staring up at seven-foot Alex Len. It was an embarrassing moment as a bartender and a Suns fan. He ordered a root beer.” Aside from celebrity sightings, Kenger says that some of the funniest memories he has of bar-goers include people trying to pay with Fry’s VIP cards, proposals in the middle of the bar and intoxicated people making their own bathrooms. Beyond the stories and drinks, The Duce was also featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” The Duce, 525 S. Central Ave., Phoenix; 602.866.3823; www.theduce.phx.com.

Durant’s

Gail Lynch

A

fter a fluke incident landed Gail Lynch (hostess at the time) behind the bar, she never looked back. Now, more than 30 years later, Lynch is still mixing up drinks for guests and putting smiles on their faces. Lynch joined the Durant’s team almost 11 years ago. It’s a no-brainer that someone with so much experience would wind up at one of the oldest (and most iconic) classic steakhouses in Phoenix, with more than 65 years in the Valley under its belt. “I love being part of an old school restaurant that holds its place in the history of Phoenix, and a place with an awesome product that I am proud to be part

of,” she explains. Sizzling steaks, big red booths, shaken cocktails and a bar that has been visited by some of the most famous celebrities in the world is just part of Lynch’s everyday gig. “Durant’s has hosted many cool people from Muhammad Ali giving the ole one-two punch to the men working in the kitchen to Don King greeting everyone as he passed in his colorful coat and crazy hair to the graciousness of Ernest Borgnine and Henry Winkler,” she admits. With notable people like this also come many great stories, but don’t expect a peep from the staff as part of their great success is that they’ll never tell. APRIL 2016 |

Some of Lynch’s favorite memories include mingling with the regular guests at the bar on a daily basis. “My fondest memory is of the gentlemen, who have since passed, that would have lunch at the bar each day and entertain me with stories of days gone by and hum tunes from old movies and records.” Although Lynch enjoys the occasional vodka martini or an Old Fashioned, she typically offers up the suggestion of a sidecar when guests aren’t sure what to order. Eddie Garcia

E

ddie Garcia traded biology for bartending, but it’s safe to say that he found his calling. The bar manager and mixologist for jade bar at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa has been behind the bar for 25 years, and at this location for about three of them. Although he started his career wanting to be a high school biology teacher and basketball coach, his path changed when he was working at a Biltmore-area restaurant called Nola’s while studying to get his degree. Jeff Myers, the general manager at the time who would later open Alice Cooper’stown, took a chance on Garcia and put the bartending rookie on the schedule to try out the craft – and

it took off from there. But, don’t think he had to give up his dream of teaching completely. “Here at jade bar, we have a Mixology 101 class on Saturdays that has been going on for years and allows me to combine my love of teaching with my fascination for cocktails,” Garcia says. “Each class offers information on a different spirit, and we teach participants how to make classic and new cocktails using those spirits.” Recently, jade bar inducted its first members into the jade bar Hall of Fame (which highlights former and current mixology superstars): Jason Asher, Kyle Mason, Micah Olson, Tyson Beuhler and Jillian Vose. “To say the least, these five are rock stars in the cocktail world!” he says. “They have not only influenced cocktail culture in the Valley but around the world. This past February, we had all of them here one night behind the bar at the same time – imagine having Wolfgang Puck, Bobby Flay, Gordon Ramsay and Julia Child in your kitchen at the same time – it was awesome!” jade bar at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa, 5700 E. The Little Woody

Shannon Krol

W

ith about 20 years of bartending experience under her belt, you can say that Shannon Krol is an expert at her craft. Krol, general manager and head bartender at The Little Woody, joined the bartending world before industry jobs were a booming business and considered a career move. “Back then bartending wasn’t considered a ‘real job’ so I took a lot of confidence jabs and was always trying to figure out what I was going to do with my life. After about 15 years of trying to figure it out, I realized I had been doing it all along,” she says. If you ask Krol’s friends, they would likely say that her drink of choice is Montenegro Amaro Liquer, but she

considers whiskey neat her go-to spirit. She also enjoys a good gin, tequila, rum, mezcal or scotch. Just like her taste in alcohol, she also enjoys making just about any drink – except lemon drops – and suggests a glass of Tequila Fortaleza Reposado neat to go with the weather these days. Being at The Little Woody for four years has given Krol the opportunity to see all of the regulars who come through the bar, a lot of which are musicians. And, it really is a place where everybody knows your name, as you’ll often see Krol and some of the other bartenders calling out to their regulars as they walk through the door and even coming out from behind APRIL 2016 |

the bar to give them hugs. “Scotty from the Gin Blossoms is our neighborhood rock star and one of my favorite people ever,” she says. “He always has a smile on his face and is such a genuine person. It’s always a pleasure to see him walking in the door.” Every third Wednesday, the bar also has speakeasy sessions for local musicians to get together and jam. Join in or just sit back, relax and enjoy local celebrities showcasing their talent on instruments like the saxophone, upright bass, bongos or harmonica. The Little Woody, 4228 E. Phoenix City Grille

Frank Vitale

ith 44 years in the bartending business and 19 of those years spent at Phoenix City Grille (PCG), it’s clear that Frank Vitale has just as much of a history to him as the Grille does. Vitale, who started as a bar-back when he was just 17 years old, has spent most of his career with PCG owner Sheldon Knapp, splitting the past 30 years between the Grille and Knapp’s other restaurant at the time, McKenna’s. Apart from seeing NBA legend and former Phoenix Suns player Connie “The Hawk” Hawkins at PCG, Vitale has had his fair share of celebrity run-ins along the way, including James Mitchum, Frank Sinatra, Hope Lange, Evel Knievel,

Oliver Reed, Kurt Russell, Fred Astaire, Raymond Burr, Elton John, Chris Evert, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Johnny Depp – just to name a few. Vitale, who is the bar manager at PCG, says his favorite part of the job is seeing old familiar faces that he has served throughout the years come back and visit him. “I realized that one of my regular customers and I went to the same high school in Scottsdale,” he explains. “Days later when I came to work, there was a picture of me from my freshman year (resembling Spock with a bow tie on) taped to the mirrored wall behind the bar that she had enlarged from our high UPTOWN |

For the springtime, he recommends Hemingway’s Cuban Daiquiri. Phoenix City Grille, 5816 N. 16th St., Phoenix; 602.266.3001; www.phoenixcitygrille.com.

Proof

Jon Crone

J

on Crone is the man to see at Proof, the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale’s relaxed, yet refined, eatery. Crone has been with Proof for 3 ½ years and has been bartending for a total of seven years. After working as a server, he made the switch to the beverage side where he says the act of bartending is an absolute art; he’s not only crafting cocktails but he’s doing so with an audience. Crone has had the opportunity to meet well-traveled people who each have a different story to tell, and, often, he uses those stories as inspiration to create a cocktail that brings them back to a certain moment in time. Crone says he’s had many moments where a celebrity was

at the bar, but received the same treatment as the guest next to them because he truly believes that everyone who sits at his bar should feel like a celebrity. But, being a football fan, one of his coolest guests has been Super Bowl XXXV winning quarterback Trent Dilfer. Another favorite: Eugene Levy, the actor who played the dad in the “American Pie” films. Proof always features at least one take on the classic Old Fashioned, so Crone is constantly experimenting with ingredients – ask for his latest version! And if your favorite song comes on and the mood strikes you, let it be known Crone won’t be one to judge. “One of the funniest moments I have APRIL 2016 |

had was when Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar On Me” came on over the speakers. A guest was really getting into the song and apparently decided it was a good idea to act the song out. In his enthusiastic state, he ran up to the bar, grabbed the sugar bowl used to rim cocktails and poured it all over himself. It was all fun and games until he realized there was about two cups’ worth of sticky sugar all over him, and the reception he was attending was just getting under way.” Proof, Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale, 10600 E Crescent Moon, Scottsdale; 480.513.5085; www.proofcanteen.com.

ver the past year, Dr Erik Svans and Dr Steven Chang have treated 100’s of teeth with a revolutionary procedure to correct Gingival Recession away from a procedure called Pinhole Surgical Technique™ or PST™. The results have been very impressive, without the need for suturing and cutting donor tissue from your palate, which was required for Traditional Gingival Grafting. Focusing on solving the original cause of the recession first (overzealous brushing, history of periodontal disease, bruxism), and treating the affected sites with PST™ second, Dr Svans and Dr Chang have been able to provide an alternative to Gingival Recession

Correction predictably and reliably with minimal pain—the number one reason why patients and dentists dislike the Traditional approach. Pinhole Surgical Technique was designed to help those who suffer from Gingival Recession procedure that is considered the most painful procedure in Dentistry. Dr. Svans and Dr. Chang were two of the first dentists in Arizona and the United States trained and certified as Pinhole Surgical Technique™ Providers. cuisine

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A CHEF? I have always loved food. I grew up in a huge Sicilian family where food and cooking was a focal point of every day. You could say it is in my blood – so, I followed my passion and became a chef. WHAT FOOD IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? Oreos! A classic, old school cookie. IF YOU WEREN’T A CHEF, YOU’D PROBABLY BE… I would have loved to become an actor, even though I get stage fright! WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD MEMORY? Christmas Eve at my uncle Frank's house brings back good memories. I can still smell the stuffed calamari and octopus. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE TYPE OF CUISINE? I don’t have a favorite type

of cuisine - I love all food and to me it’s amazing how one ingredient can be prepared differently based on where you are from, your background, or even your religious beliefs. If you think about it, that’s pretty cool.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE NOOK BRINGS TO DOWNTOWN PHOENIX? Downtown has been in a growth phase for several years. We are excited to be adding to the dinning scene and help continue to elevate it. Nook Downtown is going to be somewhat more sophisticated. The menu is going to be more contemporary, and the vibe will continue on into the décor, which is art deco, mixed with contemporary touches. Many of the Nook favorites will remain like handmade wood-fired pizza, arancini and chicken Marsala, but I am also working on new dishes that will help evolve the menu.

ngo’s Tasty Food is known for its outdoor dining and irresistible burgers, but did you know that it also has a variety of tasty cocktails to go along with the food served up? The drink list includes a variety of spirits, wine and drafts, but the standout here is the Praying Monk, which was created by Kevin Dunn, chief mixologist and spirits director for LGO Hospitality. This Tom Collins-inspired cocktail ($8 glass; $32 carafe; $6 happy hour) combines Aylesbury Duck Vodka, berryginger kombucha and citrus for a light and refreshing spring treat. “The fermented aspect of the kombucha is a key component. You also get dry orange and creole spice from the shrubb,” Dunn says. As far as what food to order off of the Ingo’s menu to enjoy with the drink? “[It] pairs great with the Kokuho Rose brown rice bowl (with lacto hot sauce!) or the chicken sammy,” Dunn says. 4502 N. 40th St., Phoenix; 602.795.2884; www.ingostastyfood.com.

A

fter a year of extraordinary craftsman designing three, five-story Chateaus, Chateau on Central Design Challenge Arizona came to a festive end in February, naming Robert Burg of Robert Burg Design, the top designer for his Paris and New York inspired chateau. Located at the northwest corner of Palm Lane and Central Avenue, the winning Chateau is one of the three vertical mansions that were completed as part of the challenge. Three selected designers were each given a budget and one chateau to design from the shell to completed stage. Residence 16, also known as The Robert, is now available for $2,995,000 and was designed by challenge winner Robert Burg. “Robert’s vision was to create sophisticated elegance in a livable space

At 5,152-square-feet and featuring three bedrooms and six baths, Monson says The Robert incorporates sophistication through layers of details. Some of the features include custom door casings and split doors, ceiling moldings and patterns, floor plan layout and use of space throughout the five-story Chateau, which comes equipped with its own custom designed private elevator and lower level media room. ange Rovers are sold around the world, and nearly half of them are equipped with diesel engines. In the Queen’s motherland, that number soars to a whopping 90 percent. Now, for the first time, Land Rover is introducing diesel powertrains to the United States market. Both the 2016 Land Rover Range Rover and Range Rover Sport can now be purchased with a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel engine with 254 horsepower and, more importantly, a massive 440 foot-pounds of torque, connected to a quick-shifting eightspeed automatic transmission. 32 percent fuel efficiency over the V-6 gasoline engine with a combined 25 mpg. The Range Rover model is known as the HSE Td6; I’ve driven it and I can tell you it’s nothing short of spectacular. I’m talking about the diesel engine performance here, but the same can be said of the Range Rover itself, which is as close to a perfect vehicle as one can get. Recently, Land Rover execs and engineers introduced the diesel-powered Range Rover for media to drive both on and offroad in Sedona. They acknowledged that the timing of their diesel introduction was less than desirable, given the Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal, cheap gasoline and that buyers seldom use the vehicle to tow a boat or trailer, where having massive amounts of torque from a diesel engine is automotive nirvana. About 15 to 20 percent of buyers are expected to choose the optional diesel engine. But Land Rover execs know their buyers couldn’t care less about towing capacity, improved fuel economy, reliability ratings or that they’ll shell out an additional $1,500 to get the diesel. All of these factors don’t matter to the kind of person who gets on a waiting list to pay around $100,000 for the supposed specialness of owning and driving a Range Rover. Case in point: Have you ever sat in a Range Rover and inhaled the intoxicating fumes of its top-grain semi-aniline perforated leather seats? Have you caressed the real Macassar wood veneer, or listened to symphony hall-like sounding instruments on the Meridian Audio system? Or, have you enjoyed the high-tech electronics, amenities and world-class off-road creds? It is for these reasons that you’ll opt to include the whisper quiet diesel – because it’s about the empowerment that comes with the seduction of owning and driving the finest of British luxury. Alas, royalty must be served. Automotive writer Jim Prueter is a spokesperson for AAA. You can catch him on several local TV stations and can reach him at jmprueter@yahoo.com.

runch is popular in the Valley, thanks in great part to our undying love of the mimosa – a tasty treat that is traditionally made with a heavy pour of sparkling wine and orange juice. Although the sipper is delicious in its original form, several restaurants and bars have been going outside of the box and getting more creative with their recipes, adding everything from ginger beer to pink grapefruit, and a variety of other unique ingredients, into the mix. Here is a look at some of our favorite spins on this classic morning cocktail.

R

ecently there has been a lot of buzz about so-called super foods, which claim to offer exceptional nutritional value, improving your overall health. One of the popular foods that fits into this category is the acai berry, which grows in Central and South America. These berries grow near the tops of certain palm trees in clusters and is not the easiest of fruits to harvest. The fruit has a flavor that has been described as a combination of a fruity red wine with chocolate overtones, and, much like some wines, it is believed that those tiny berries contain burst of energy and powerful antioxidants, perhaps double that of blueberries and 10 times what is found in grapes. Acai has longtime been incorporated into smoothies and juices, but now it’s gaining popularity in it’s own dish – the acai bowl. If you’re looking to add acai berries into your dietary rotation, seek out these spots in your neighborhood that are serving up this super fruit in some delightful combinations.

undertones of the acai berry and it’s no surprise that banana and chocolate marry well together. The cup is topped with fresh sliced bananas, granola and the perfect drizzle of honey.

If you’re overwhelmed or looking for some direction, the staff are all highly educated on the menu and happy to guide you to the best choice. What to Order: Acai & Pitaya Bowl There is a lot going on in this bowl, and reading the list of ingredients you may think that all of the individual flavors would get lost, but it is a little dish straight from heaven. The bowl is made up of (are you ready?): acai, bananas, raspberry, almond butter, brazil nuts, maca, coconut oil, cinnamon, liquid vitamins, hemp seeds and coconut water. After all of that is blended and made smooth, the mixture is then topped with bananas, a dragon fruit drizzle, housemade hemp granola and shaved coconut. One bite and you will get transported to a tropical island – instantly relaxed, refreshed and ready to conquer your day!

What to order: Acai Superfood Bowl You’ll find all of the health benefits you expect from this bowl with the added taste and flavor of bananas, blueberries and hemp granola (packed full of omega-3 and omega-6 fats and fiber rich). The sweetness of the acai and bananas is tempered by the tartness of the blueberries and the granola adds a nice texture contrast.

Nekter Juice Bar 2045 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix 480.771.5181 www.nekterjuicebar.com There are so many reasons to make a trip to Nekter, from the three pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables you’ll find in each of their juices, to the excellent anti-inflammatory properties in each glass. Not to mention the passion and dedication that the employees have to ensure that your experience is a great one. Any questions that you throw at them will be answered with a friendly smile, and you’ll leave with a great product, plus an education on what you are putting into your body. What to Order: PB Bowl Nekter boasts three separate acai bowls, all highly addictive and delicious, making it close to impossible to choose a favorite. We selected the PB Bowl based on the added punch of – you guessed it – peanut butter. This bowl is jam packed with flavor and nutrition combining acai, banana, strawberries, dates, peanut butter along with a house made vanilla cashew milk. If that wasn’t enough, it is topped off with a hempseed granola, more banana, strawberry and agave nectar for an additional touch of sweetness. APRIL 2016 |
