The REALTORS® who sell luxury homes the fastest, and for the most money, couldn’t be more obvious. Never before has one company reached such heights. Perhaps it’s the locally-owned heritage since 1947. Or the impressive, civic-minded men and women who make it what it is today. Or the iconic, blue signs that have become status symbols for front yards across Arizona. Not just because they will soon mean sold, but because these signs now mean something else. Savvy. Discreet. Refined. Without question, the sign of the times.

F

or a few years now, I’ve attended the Heart Ball, one of the Valley’s premier yearly fundraising balls. So, when I received a call a few months ago asking if I’d join the Heart Ball committee, I was not only honored, but glad to help be a part of the solution to a problem that seems to touch almost every family. It’s a sad commonality, but there are so many people in this world whose lives have been touched by heart disease or stroke. The Heart Ball raises funds that benefit the American Heart Association, an organization working to change that. From how childhood obesity (which is an epidemic right now) impacts young hearts, to adults who’ve had a heart attack or stroke, and everything in-between, heart disease affects way too many people. Enter Kimberly Afkhami and those on the Phoenix Heart Ball committee, who are working tirelessly for the cause. Kimberly, who is the 2015 Heart Ball Chairman, talks about philanthropy, why she became involved with Heart Ball, this year’s event, and why this cause is so important in the story on page 42. As for me, I’m fighting for all those who are special in my life who have been touched by heart disease and stroke—my grandmother, my father-in-law, and so many others—as well as those who it will impact in the future. If you’re looking to get involved, The 56th Annual Heart Ball will be held on Nov. 21 at the Arizona Biltmore. Tickets are available at www.heart.org/phoenix. I hope to see you there! After you learn about Kimberly (who is a truly amazing woman!), take the time to read about the other amazing people we profile in this issue, like Lorraine Tallman (pg. 27), Mike Brown (pg. 30) and JoEllen Lynn (pg. 32). And, we feature six great organizations that are cultivating the next generation of philanthropists and volunteers (pg. 47). Isn’t it wonderful to know that so many people are doing such great things? Oh, and to inspire you to be healthy, we also feature fabulous workout wear on page 94 (because you need to look stylish while getting in shape, right?!), as well as healthy restaurants on page 116, and stylish fit gear on page 86. Here’s to health, style, and giving back!

THE ANGEL OF COMFORT Lorraine Tallman is turning unspeakable loss into a beautiful tribute BY SHANA SCHWARZ PHOTOS BY CARL SCHULTZ

t’s every parent’s nightmare to be told their child has been diagnosed with cancer. After the fear and the anger comes uncertainty, and the new reality of what it means to battle such a terrible disease. Even the treatment process is brutal, as the act of getting chemotherapy into a little body is harder than most people realize. Luckily for Arizona families going through a battle with cancer, Lorraine Tallman is there to help.

up close “Comfycozys for Chemo started at the end of 2013,” explains Tallman. “We started giving away hoodies, dresses, T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts—they’re all adaptive clothing for children that either have a port or a feeding tube, things like that. It just hides everything so that kids can feel normal and not have their body exposed. In a chemo room, children and adults are all lined up in chairs, so to try to get a 2-year-old or any young child to take their shirt off to stick a needle in their chest to start chemotherapy, you can imagine what kind of struggle these parents have to go through. Nobody wants to hold their children down, but sometimes you do in order to get chemo started.” Witnessing that struggle with her own daughter, Amanda, Tallman was heartbroken. “It all starts with them feeling so naked and vulnerable and not having any control,” she says. “When my daughter got cancer the first time, she hated it. When she got cancer the second time at 12-years-old, she hated it even more. One night, she had a dream about an apparel line with these hidden zippers and buttons

and pockets with slits on the sides for their different lines so she would never have to expose her body again. You go up to a little munchkin and you’re like, ‘Do you want to unzip the left side or the right side?’ You’re already giving them power and a decision. They always pick a side. They are in the mode of making positive choices at that point. You don’t have to take their clothes off because the zippers open wide enough. For children, it’s just a matter of empowering them to have a choice in a world they don’t have a choice in, and allowing them to stay covered.” And thus, a young girl’s dream of helping other kids lives on through her mother. The popularity of this clothing line is beyond what anyone could have imagined. “We thought only little girls would like it, but we’ve run into teenage boys who start off being football players with this healthy big body who end up losing so much weight and they bruise very easily and become very skinny, and a lot of the nurses are a lot younger and the teenagers do not want to get undressed for their treatment,” Tallman explains.

“When Amanda had this dream about this apparel line, I had no idea how big it would become and how many children would want it. It’s been quite the journey. A simple little dream has really changed the atmosphere in a lot of hospitals. I hear from parents, from doctors, and from nurses. Parents were relying on Ativan or Benadryl to help calm their children, so we’d have to drug them just to get the chemo in. Now, they hardly have to use the anti-anxiety meds because the kids have that one layer of choice and empowerment that they never had before. Now, going into the chemo room they’re not screaming and crying; they’re walking in with a little more confidence.” Thanks to Tallman’s hard work, in Arizona, every child diagnosed with cancer gets a Comfycozy for free. “We’ve reached over 4,000 kids since we’ve started,” says Tallman. “People say that’s amazing, but I say not everyone has their own personal angel looking out for them. I really believe Amanda leads me everywhere I need to go, every hospital that we’re in. I feel like she’s with me all the time. For me, it’s not luck, it’s divine intervention. People think I’m crazy, but that’s what I believe. After four years of suffering through chemo, I think she knows what kids need.” Amanda passed away on March 30, 2012. Her second bout with cancer turned out to be much worse than doctors originally thought, but before she passed away, she made her mom promise that she would go forward with this plan. Tallman took that promise to heart and has expanded the program to not only provide Comfycozys at the beginning of a child’s battle with cancer, but also goodie bags to celebrate their last round of treatment, including a gift card for dinner so that the family can enjoy a meal together. Through events like the 3rd Annual Night of Hope Gala, which will be held on Sat., Sept. 26, and corporate sponsorships, Tallman raises money to provide as much as she can for kids and their families. “Dignity is such a priceless gift,” she says. BLAZE OF GLORY

Mike Brown has had quite a welcome to Scottsdale BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

“W

hen my wife, Patty, and I moved to the Valley from Denver in summer 2005, we knew it would be hot, but that was a bit of an understatement, to say the least,” says Mike Brown, whose new home went up in smoke–literally–within months of moving to Arizona. Thankfully, no one was hurt. But, the Browns were temporarily homeless. “We moved here so I could continue to build my banking career, and ended up needing to rebuild our entire lives,” he says. The learning lessons from the fire? People are more important than any things, live your passions, and help others. “I took these lessons to heart at home and work, and it changed my life,” says Brown, who was named the first-ever Arizona regional president of Washington Federal, a nearly 100-yearold company, last year. The role was well-deserved—not only has he grown the business considerably, but he worked to establish ATMs at all branch locations earlier this year, as well as launched a business banking initiative to help grow and fund Arizona’s economy and commercial real estate markets coming out of the recession.

Etc.

How have the first 18 months in office been? A whirlwind–we’ve grown to 35 branches and launched a business banking initiative out of Scottsdale. Given the economic events of recent years, where is banking today? Definitely an upturn. In fact, we just financed a nearly $10 million expansion of a client in the Phoenix-Goodyear Airport—a great sign! How have you instilled the idea of helping others into the fabric of Washington Federal? Our motto is “Invested Here,” and we ask each of our branches to put it into practice. A great example–we just made a $2.9 million investment in transitional housing for veterans in Tucson as part of our commitment to the area.

Lots of products come in contact with your skin – soaps, lotions, anti-aging creams. Most of these are potent cocktails of multiple ingredients, and any of their components can cause an allergic reaction at any time, whether it’s a new product or a brand you’ve used for years. (Even “natural” ingredients like aloe or vitamin E can be the culprit.) It’s called contact dermatitis, and Spectrum Dermatology can soothe it! Through specialized, skin-specific patch testing and some smart detective work, we can isolate what’s bothering your complexion. Then we’ll help you find alternative products, so you can continue to get the results you want without all the irritation. Contact dermatitis? Contact Spectrum Dermatology! SCOUT’S HONOR

JoEllen Lynn is giving back to her favorite group of girls BY SHANA SCHWARZ

oEllen Lynn, director of public and community affairs for Fry’s Food Stores Phoenix, will serve as the event chair for the Girl Scouts—Arizona Cactus-Pine Council 2015 Women & Young Women of Distinction luncheon. It’s a natural fit for Lynn, considering her history. “I was a Girl Scout and it helped to develop my self-esteem,” she says. “I loved the projects my troop worked on. I read the Girl Scout Handbook over and over. As an adult, I became a Girl Scout leader for five years. My troop loved camping, cooking and singing.” Lynn, a mother of two and grandmother to four, is certainly busy with her family and career, but this event was too special for her to pass up. “For me, it’s all about the Girl Scouts being honored, and their accomplishments,” she says. “I believe in Girl Scouting and have seen the benefits of the program for my daughters, my scouts, and myself. Girl Scouts opens the door to many worlds for our girls, from arts to the outdoors, and more. I feel Girl Scouts is one of the best investments we can make for our future and the future of our girls.” The annual event, honoring outstanding individuals, will be held on Oct. 17 at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa. Tickets can be purchased at www.girlscoutsaz.org/wywd.

Etc.

What characteristics do you admire? The characteristics that I admire include drive, passion for people, ability to motivate others, intelligence, visionary, and compassionate. I have had so many women that were my mentors, and I can never thank them enough. What’s your favorite Girl Scout cookie flavor? Frozen Thin Mints—hidden in a corner of my freezer. Any fun badge stories to share? We learned how to canoe with the council’s help—what a crazy adventure. We had to swamp the canoe, jump out of the canoe and then get back into it, and other skills. My assistant leader, her daughter and I were the only members of our troop earning that badge. I was just hoping that nobody was videotaping us because I knew it was material for America’s Funniest Home Videos.

estled in the Arts District of Old Town Scottsdale sits Citizen Public House, an upscale gastropub acclaimed for its creative New American cuisine, complemented by a dynamic craft cocktail selection. The lively cocktail menu is just as lively as the bartenders who create it—one being Michael Liberatore. Liberatore’s zest for hospitality is evident each time he takes a turn behind his bar. He provides every patron with a personalized bar experience by cultivating innovative concoctions to their likes. “I love the creative license that comes with my job—being able to introduce guests to other flavors than just the traditional vodka soda,” he says. “Ultimately, my goal is to make every guest happy, and if I do that then I have done my job.” Liberatore’s knack for creativity not only lies in cocktail construction, but also in fashion. From his Brixton Hooligan driver’s cap and full-faced beard to raw denim jeans and button-down Oxfords, Liberatore dons a very old-fashioned, speakeasy style—he’s truly a clean-cut and classically dressed bartender.

IN GOOD SPIRITS

Where do you gain your fashion inspiration? The classics. There are trends that come and go, but a good pair of slacks and a white Oxford button-up will always be timeless staples. Much like a classic Manhattan, a simple but wellput-together outfit will always be good. What is one fashion tip you live by? A good, clean haircut with a side part completes any look. When you aren’t behind the bar, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I like to ride my motorcycle when the weather permits. I also like to expand my own palette by visiting small local bars and restaurants, and talking shop with my industry friends.

s owner of Twice clothing store, Brittany Korey knows a thing or two about style. So, it is no surprise that when it comes to her own personal style, you will always find her on point. “My personal style varies all the time, depending on my mood. Right now, everything is about great jeans, T-shirts, and amazing shoes,” says Korey. Korey isn’t that into big high-end designers when it comes to her T-shirts, and she sticks to a few popular brands like J Brand and Rag & Bone when it comes to her jeans, but her shoes… her shoes are where you won’t find her skimping on the goods. “I spend a lot of money on my shoes and accessories. That is how I put my outfits together. I buy my shoes and put the rest of the pieces together after that point, adding key accessories.” Whether it is her six-inch heels for a night out on the town with friends or her favorite flip-flops for lounging around the house, shoes are definitely a focus for Korey. “Shoes are like my children, and my flip-flops are like my best friend. I can’t go cheap on my shoes at all—they are very important to me.”

Is there anyone in Hollywood whose style you think you emulate? The two that would come to mine would probably be a little of Kourtney Kardashian and a little Rachel Zoe. Where are some of your favorite hot spots to hit while dressing in style around town? A few of my favorites while I’m out and about are definitely City Hall and SumoMaya. If you had one piece of fashion advice to share with younger generations and friends, what would it be? The advice I would tell a younger generation or a friend would be to go with what looks best on you, and don’t always go with trends.

Matters of the

We’d all like to give back to the community. For many of us, volunteering is something we plan to do “someday.” We’ll get to it when things slow down, we think, but years go by and it remains on the to-do list. For Kimberly Afkhami, someday is yesterday, today and tomorrow.

A

s the 2015 Heart Ball Chairman, she’s busy organizing one of the biggest and best events of the year in Arizona, and it’s all for a cause that is near and dear to her own heart. “I have been with the Heart Ball for eight years in different capacities, each year on different committees, which has given me a great grasp on how the Heart Ball works,” says Afkhami. “I was brought on through a friend. I got to know a little bit about it and realized this was something I wanted to be a part of. My father had a heart attack and my wonderful mother-inlaw was given a pacemaker. Just getting to know the women, I just felt like this was the right place for me. I love being a part of it. I was asked to be the chairman and elected last year, and so I am the chairman this year and I am honored to do it. My platform this year is childhood obesity. It

is the number one health crisis facing our American youth today. “In 2014, as Heart Ball Chairmanelect, I was invited to attend the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions conference in Chicago, where I learned the scope of the epidemic of childhood obesity. I had the opportunity to speak with several doctors and specialists about what the effects of being obese is doing to their young hearts. I have learned that obese children as young as 3 years of age show indicators for developing heart disease later in life. In Arizona, the childhood obesity rates are significantly higher than the national average. A staggering 19.8% of children in Arizona are considered obese, and experts believe that if obesity among children continues, the current generation will become the first in American history to live shorter lives than their parents. “The American Heart Association is trying to help prevent that, because it is preventable.” Taking on such a big responsibility was an easy decision for Afkhami, who hopes her work will help others avoid a scary situation like she had experienced. “When you get that phone call that your father’s had a heart attack, it’s a little nerve-wracking because you just don’t know,” she explains. “It’s a lot of emotion. He had actually shown some signs of a heart attack a few days prior to it actually happening, but he had been in a car accident a month prior and was feeling pains associated with that. He was visiting a doctor for a check-up when the doctor said, ‘You’re having a heart attack. We need to get you to the emergency room right away.’ He was shocked. They called an ambulance and got him in and he had significant clogging in his arteries and had to have stents put in. Since then, he’s learned to eat a little healthier. He was always active. We were so lucky that the outcome was a positive one, but when you get that phone call, it’s scary. I think that that, along with seeing a friend of ours have a massive heart attack that he passed away from and seeing that family deal with that and go through the emotions and the pain and the loss, was very significant in our family. I think this was the best fit for me for giving back. “A lot of the outcomes are very positive because of the research and the wonderful things that the American Heart Association has been able to provide through the years,” Afkhami says. “We’re very lucky that we can raise the funds for them. My father may not have made it if it hadn’t been for it.” While virtually everyone has heard of the American Heart Association (AHA), people don’t always know exactly what the organization does. Educating people about their mission is something Afkhami loves to do. “Locally here they provide research; several of the universities as well as hospitals here do a lot of research for the American Heart Association,” she explains. “There

are also initiatives like trying to make workplaces smoke-free. They also help hospitals standardize patient care, with 25 local hospitals participating. The AHA also works with the NFL for its Play 60 program, which is an initiative to keep kids active. A lot of local schools participate. The biggest group locally is the Halle Heart Museum in Tempe. It’s the only one of its kind in the nation. It’s a hands-on cardiovascular museum where the kids get to come in and really learn how to live healthier lives. They have so many different types of areas where the kids can learn how to take care of their hearts—no smoking, how to eat healthy, how to exercise. It really is a great experience. It opened to the public this past February and they primarily service local schools. They’ve educated over 35,000 people this past year alone. The numbers just keep rising.” Giving back locally is important to Afkhami. Though not a native, she has strong ties to this community. “I’ve been in Arizona for 35 years, so yes, I grew up in Arizona,” she says. “My father’s company brought us out here from New Mexico. I’ve been here ever since and I absolutely love it. My boys grew up here and they’re now in college at ASU and U of A. It’s been a wonderful experience for us. I met my husband here; it’s home for us. My boys went to Brophy and we so enjoyed it. From start to finish, it was an incredible experience. I just loved their mission—Men for Others. Their dearest friends now are their friends from Brophy.” As her boys grew, Afkhami’s desire to give back grew with them. “It started several years ago,” she explains. “I had several friends who were docents with the Phoenix Art Museum, and I was always kind of interested in it. My stepmother said she was going to go through the process of becoming a docent—it’s a two-year commitment—and it’s a really lovely program. I decided I would join her on that journey, and that was 14-and-a-half years ago. I absolutely love giving back within the museum and going out to schools, and just being a part of the docent community. That’s how I started. And then I started with the American Heart Association. I’ve done the Heart Ball and the Beach Ball in different capacities through the years, off and on. With the boys in school, I narrowed it down to a few things because there are just so many ways to volunteer in the Valley. The Phoenix Art Museum and the Heart Ball are the two I’m most passionate about.” With her sons now starting college, Afkhami felt ready to take the plunge as Heart Ball chairman when she was elected two years ago. “It really is a full-time job for the year,” she says. “I shadowed the Heart Ball chairman last year, learning everything. And then I took the reins last year in December and put my committee together, and my platform, which is childhood obesity [this year’s theme is Passionate Hearts], and it’s pretty much 24/7 now, which is fine because I enjoy it. I

“It’s easy to find wonderful ways to give back. If

there’s something you’re passionate about, you’ll

find ways to help. That’s how a lot of the women each year on the Heart

Ball committees get asked; they’ve had friends who

have been involved. Heart

wake up with emails from my over 25 committees. They are all working on different aspects of the event, but questions always come back to me. I make sure to stay in touch. With the American Heart Association I have my liaison and I talk to her every day. Then there’s the fundraising aspects and the meetings. There’s a lot of time spent on the phone, and a lot on email. I also meet with potential donors and previous donors to thank them for supporting us. I love every minute of it. It can be challenging, but I love it at the end of the day, every day.” When she’s not busy volunteering, Afkhami enjoys playing tennis (“I haven’t been able to do that a lot lately,” she laughs), spinning, and spending time with friends and family. Even though she’s enjoying her job immensely, she’s also looking forward to what the future will bring. “I had to put the museum on the backburner, so I will be involved with them in January again,” she says. “I asked them to hang in there while I do this. I’ll probably be doing a little relaxing because I think I’ll be a little tired by the end of this. I’ll enjoy my time with my family, and I’ll just wait and see what else comes my way for philanthropy.” For anyone hoping to get involved in the community, Afkhami says you needn’t look further than your own network or computer.
“It’s reaching out to friends first,” she says. “That’s how I became a docent first at the museum, and then became involved with the Heart Ball. You can look online for things to do in philanthropy. It’s easy to find wonderful ways to give back. If there’s something you’re passionate about, you’ll find ways to help. That’s how a lot of the women each year on the Heart Ball committees get asked; they’ve had friends who have been involved. Heart disease and stroke affects so many people today. I think this is a wonderful way to give back.” The Heart Ball, which raises funds to help prevent heart disease and stroke, will be held on Nov. 21 at the Arizona Biltmore. Cultivating the next generation of philanthropists and volunteers

Here in the Valley, there are several organizations that have been started by those in their 20s-40s—and whose members are in those age groups—that aim to groom the next generation of philanthropists and volunteers. Here’s a look at six of them. BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTOS BY CARL SCHULTZ

The Phoenix Symphony Young Professionals Responses by: Grace Gaabucayan, board member and president, and Matthew Engle, founding board member and past-president Year founded: 2011

Describe the organization: The Phoenix Symphony Young Professionals (PSYP) promotes and supports The Phoenix Symphony’s mission to be an arts leader and cultural catalyst for a thriving Arizona. We’re challenging the next generation of Valley leaders to carry the baton and expand the reach of arts and culture to other young professionals in the community. Was there a specific reason behind founding this organization? The idea behind the PSYP is to expand awareness and generate excitement about The Phoenix Symphony’s extensive programming, from classics to pops, Rachmaninoff to John Williams–and have some fun while we’re at it! Funds raised benefit: The primary goal of the PSYP isn’t to raise funds, but rather to expand the reach of the Symphony to new audiences. However, we plan the annual Downtown Music Stroll, where Downtown venues host local bands or musicians, and provide food and drinks for ticket holders. Proceeds of that event benefit the Symphony’s community programs. Describe the activities or events of the organization: The PSYP hosts a number of dinners, cocktail parties, intermission receptions, and other events throughout the year, usually in conjunction with Symphony performances. Developing the next generation of philanthropists/volunteers is important because: A thriving arts and culture community is a vital part of a major city’s success, and expanding the reach of the arts, especially among up-and-coming Valley leaders, will help Phoenix continue to grow into a world-class cultural destination. Twenty years from now, this organization will… be thriving, with many of our former members continuing to support The Phoenix Symphony through attendance, annual/planned giving, and outreach. Describe the organization: Suns Charities 88, named after Phoenix Suns Charities’ inaugural year in 1988, was created to offer a platform for energized business professionals within the community to network amongst their peers while providing an opportunity to collectively give back through the philanthropic power of Phoenix Suns Charities. We focus on three main principles: professional development, collaborative partnerships, and philanthropy. In our first three “seasons,” our members have raised over $600,000 for Suns Charities, which has distributed more than $15 million to charitable organizations.

Suns Charities 88 (SC88) Responses by: Paige Pataky, Suns Charities 88 chair, aka “Coach” Year founded: 2012

Was there a specific reason behind founding this organization? The Phoenix Suns Charities Board recognized the importance of continuing its philanthropic tradition with a new generation, and set out to find the top 88 young entrepreneurs, business executives, legal minds, marketing leaders, and other energized professionals. Now in our fourth “season,” SC88 has taken many of these founding members and created an Alumni Program, allowing us to usher in additional young leaders to our fold. Funds raised benefit: We are focused on enhancing the lives of Arizona’s children and their families by actively creating and supporting programs in the areas of education, health, human services, the arts, rehabilitation, and sports and recreation. Describe the activities or events of the organization: Our signature event is our SC88 Slam Dunk, a progressive party culminating on the Phoenix Suns’ center court. This year, Slam Dunk will take place in October, with tickets starting at $188. Developing the next generation of philanthropists/volunteers is important because: Our SC88 members create a forum for networking, personal development, philanthropic and fundraising opportunities that simultaneously create a community-minded, connected workforce across the Valley that benefits the Valley. Herberger Theater Center’s Young Leadership Board Responses by: Katherine May, Young Leadership Board chair Year founded: Late 2014 (officers were elected January 2015)

Describe the organization: The Young Leadership Board (YLB) is a civic organization of Valley young professionals with an interest in promoting the Herberger Theater Center (HTC) and the broader Phoenix arts community. Our mission is to build awareness, foster growth, and raise funds for the HTC and its Youth Outreach Programs, while providing a platform for professional development through civic involvement, networking, and mentorship opportunities. Our members have a diverse set of skills and experience, but they all share a passion for, and commitment to, the performing arts. Was there a specific reason behind founding this organization? Much of what we do is aimed at generating interest in the theater among the younger demographic, so they may develop a passion for, and commitment to, the performing arts. The arts industry has a significant impact in our communities and is vital for the future. We are encouraging the next generation to engage and play their part. Funds raised benefit: The HTC’s Youth Outreach Programs—Arizona Young Artists’ Competition, Multicultural Theater Camp and Wolf Trap—designed to give Arizona children (ages 3-19) opportunities to excel, learn, and heal through the arts. Describe the activities or events of the organization: We have monthly meetings to plan upcoming networking events and fundraisers, and discuss topics of interest facing the local community. We’ve also brought in guest speakers to talk with us about professional development. Lately we’ve been busy planning our inaugural fundraiser, “Stand Up for Downtown Theater,” an evening of comedy, food and cocktails taking place at the HTC on Sept. 11 from 7-10 p.m. We also host social events, as well as volunteer with other non-profit arts groups, such as Free Arts for Abused Children. We’re always looking for opportunities to get involved in our community. For more information, visit www. herbergertheater.org/young-leadershipboard/ or email youngleaders@herbergertheater.org.

Describe the organization: In 1988, the Valley of the Sun (VOS) Active 20-30 Club established itself in the Phoenix area. VOS Active 20-30 is a regional division of Active 20-30 International. VOS 20-30 is made up of approximately 65 professional women, ages 20-39, who are committed to fundraising for the club’s 501c3 charity, Valley Kids Foundation, building leadership development skills, and participating in organized hands-on activities with local children’s charities.

Valley of the Sun Active 20-30 Club Responses by: Siobhan Richards, president Year founded: 1988

Was there a specific reason behind founding this organization? This club was founded to provide young adults an opportunity for personal growth, friendship, and leadership development, while improving the quality of life for children in the community. Funds raised benefit: Local children’s charities, including Florence Crittenton of Arizona, Child Crisis Center, and Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Describe the activities or events of the organization: VOS 20-30 has two fundraising events: the 8th Annual Wine Soiree event on Nov. 20, and our signature event, the 22nd Annual VIVA: A Valley Kids Foundation Benefit on April 2, 2016. VIVA is an extravagant semi-formal event that features games, live entertainment, food, dancing, and more. Proceeds from both events are directly applied to programs served by the Valley Kids Foundation. The club also volunteers at organized hands-on activities monthly with our beneficiaries. Developing the next generation of philanthropists/volunteers is important because: Giving back to your local community is so important. You are never too young to start. Twenty years from now, this organization will… Be thriving with young, professional women; providing funding to even more local children’s charities; and promoting leadership development to the future generation of philanthropists. Scottsdale 20-30 Club Responses by: Matt Wolach, president Year founded: 1987

Describe the organization: The Scottsdale 20-30 Club is made up of 50 young men between the ages of 20 and 39 who come together to help children who are sick, at risk, or in need. By hosting special events, the Club draws the community together to raise funds for, and to educate our citizens about, the financial, medical, and emotional needs of Arizona’s children. Was there a specific reason behind founding this organization? While there were several philanthropic groups for older people, there was no outlet for young men to give back to their community. The Scottsdale 20-30 Club was founded for that purpose, and it continues today. Funds raised benefit: Local children’s charities. The groups we cater to are not national organizations, but groups with smaller budgets based here in Arizona. The funds we raise have a big impact on the children in our community. Describe the activities or events of the organization: We have two primary fundraising events: NiteFlite, which is a two-day event in October, and Brokers for Kids/Agents Benefiting Children, which runs in April. Each event has grown to be very popular in the community, with as many as 3,000 attendees. Developing the next generation of philanthropists/volunteers is important because: So many younger people want to give back but they don’t know where they can do it and they don’t know how. A lot of what we do revolves around developing our newer members to become strong leaders and philanthropists. Twenty years from now, this organization will… have a new set of incredible leaders who continue to produce amazing things for the kids in our community who need it most. For more information, visit www.scottsdale2030.org, or contact Matt Wolach, president, at mwolach@scottsdale2030. org. Describe the organization: We established Barrow Beyond to give the next generation of philanthropists in the Valley an opportunity to learn about and support Barrow Neurological Institute. Our goal was to create an interesting but meaningful way to bring people together for learning, philanthropy, and fun.

Barrow Beyond Responses by: Shannon Mishkin, co-founder Year founded: 2012

Was there a specific reason behind founding this organization? I was asked to serve on a committee formed by Barrow Neurological Foundation to raise money for Barrow Brain Tumor Research Center. As I learned more about Barrow, I began to realize that my demographic wasn’t familiar with the amazing research and clinical trials underway there. I felt I could help foster an up-and-coming group of Barrow supporters, so I called two of my friends—Lisa Geyser and Sharon Pollack. We all had family or friends who had been treated at Barrow. Funds raised benefit: To date we’ve raised nearly $200,000 for Barrow. Becoming a member requires a personal annual commitment of $1,000 to Barrow Neurological Foundation. Each spring we designate what specific area of Barrow we will support. Describe the activities or events of the organization: Barrow Beyond offers many opportunities to get involved. We are invited to special programs at Barrow where top neurosurgeons, neurologists and researchers discuss the latest advances in technology, research and treatments for spine and brain diseases. We also host networking events where we socialize and hear about the fascinating work at Barrow. Developing the next generation of philanthropists/volunteers is important because: Philanthropy is critical to Barrow Neurological Institute’s ability to invest in medical research, physician training, and patient services. Barrow will depend upon our generation to help fund important advances made in the neurological sciences. Ultimately, the goal is to find cures for devastating neurological conditions so that more lives can be saved. For more information, visit www.supportbarrow.org/barrowbeyond.

Floral arrangements are an art, and Christine Price is an artist. Price, who is the lead florist at Talking Stick Resort (you can visit the resort to see her work!), was recently honored at an event in Colorado, where she was inducted into the American Institute of Floral Designers (AFID). She also received the Accredited Floral Design designation. In order to earn the accreditation, florists must showcase their skills and abilities to an international judging panel for consideration. “Creating floral arrangements is my ultimate passion,” she says. “I still wake up each day with a renewed excitement to create. Receiving the coveted designation and induction is a huge honor.” 9800 E. Indian Bend Road, Scottsdale; 480.850.7777; www.talkingstickresort.com.

EXPERIENCE

COUNTS!

Looking great may be easier than you think. “I’d really love to do something to improve my face and figure, but I”m afraid of the pain, the post operative nausea and of course the cost. Isn’t there a way that I can enhance my appearance without all the hassles of a major production?” The answer is a resounding YES! Dr Andrew Wolin has found a great way to maximize the safety of facial, breast and body procedures while minimizing the pain and the cost. By utilizing an enhanced form of local anesthesia as well as sedation by specialists in ambulatory anesthesia, procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lifts, facelifts, rhinoplasties and liposuction can be done under a quick enhanced form of anesthesia and patients are be able to walk to their cars and go home after the procedure without nausea and pain. Part of the miraculous process is the use of a long acting local anesthetic at the conclusion of the procedure to give a 48 hour period of pain relief…no narcotic…no nausea. PRE OP

POST BREAST AUGMENTATION

Patients have been raving about the experience and can’t believe they’ve ever had surgery any other way.

“Dr Wolin told me that I could undergo a breast augmentation in less than one hour without general anesthetic and then get off the operating room table and walk to my car. When it actually happened, I was amazed. What a great experience.” (verified testimonial)

Call our office and see if you are a candidate for this revolutionary approach to Plastic Surgical procedures. It’s as easy as going to your dentist and having dental implants done… maybe easier. Dr. Andrew Wolin has been a leader in the plastic surgical community of Scottsdale since 1985, and his extensive years of experience benefit each patient. His top-notch reputation as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and for cutting-edge procedures draws patients from near and far. Dr. Wolin is the Medical Director of the Wolin Plastic Surgery Center. His practice offers a full-range of face and body procedures, including facelifts, browlifts, nose surgery, facial fillers, BOTOX® Cosmetic, fat transfers, fotofacialsTM, laser skin resurfacing, ear sur- gery, SmartlipoTM, breast augmentations, breast implant/exchanges, breast reductions, breast lifts, arm lifts, bodylifts, liposuction, and tummy tucks. re you ready for some seriously amazing fashion? With 22 runway shows featuring fashions from both established and emerging designers, a Designer of the Year competition, Model of the Year competition, a Style Villa shopping experience, fashion seminars, glamorous after parties, and more, Phoenix Fashion Week 2015 (PHXFW) is set to once again leave its mark on both the Valley and national fashion scenes. The event kicks off on Oct. 1 with the Fashionably Pink fashion show, held at Schumacher European Ltd. Mercedes Benz Showroom. This runway show is a celebrity fashion show and will, as in past years, feature pink-inspired outfits by designers and retailers. All of the money raised during this event will benefit local charities, and you can also get in on some fundraising fun with a live and silent auction. The Fashionably Pink event is just one of many runway shows taking place during Fashion Week. In fact, there will be five emerging and three established Designer Runway shows per night. Each of the shows will be held nightly from Oct. 1-3, and ticket prices range from $45-$225, which includes admission to the Style Villa. Phoenix Fashion Week also includes a number of competitions, including Model of the Year. This is a great way for Fashion

The Model of the Year competition is narrowed down to the Top 40 competitors from hundreds of entries, and they all compete in a variety of challenges that are aimed at preparing them for the fashion industry. On Oct. 3 there will be an official after party where the winner of Model of the Year will be announced. There is also a Designer of the Year competition, which is one of PHXFW’s signature events. RESHAPE YOUR MIND, BODY & SPIRIT WITH HOT YOGA. A stronger, toned and more flexible body and an improved state of mind encouraging relaxation, selfacceptance and awareness. “In a yoga class, you practice poses that require stretching and compression of the joints, muscles, ligaments and other supporting structures of the body.

Your body naturally protects itself from physical exertion by generating heat from the inside muscles outwards. We start with the heat up front…providing that extra protection from the very first poses. Your body burns fat more effectively and you lose inches of shape in a relatively short time”.

Newcomers and experienced students welcome.

EXPLORING ARIZONA WINES Arizona’s unique terroir produces some great wines BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

G

rapes have grown in this area since the Hohokam cultivated native varietals. By the 1500s, the Spanish introduced European grapes, many of which thrived in the Southwest. However, the state’s wine industry disappeared almost overnight during Prohibition. Arizona’s modern wine industry has evolved slowly since about 1973. It got a shot in the arm in 2006, when the Arizona Wine Growers Association helped craft new legislation that allowed Arizona wineries to sell and ship direct to consumers. Today, there are more than 100 wineries statewide, each of which celebrates Arizona’s terroir, or the unique soil, topography and climate that imparts taste and flavor to wines. There are three primary growing regions in Arizona: the Verde Valley north of Phoenix, Sonoita in Southern Arizona, and Willcox in Southeastern Arizona.

flights, but a tasting menu of delicious apps and stone-fired pizzas. If you visit on a weekend, you can catch live music, take a winery tour, or book a massage or yoga session in the vineyard. Most of the wines at Page Springs are blends of several southern Rhône varietals, such as Petite Sirah, Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Try the 2014 La Serrana, a blend of Roussane, Viognier and Marsanne.

HEAD NORTH TO THE VERDE VALLEY

Caduceus Cellar (www.caduceous.org) is the brainchild of musician Maynard James Keenan. From the Steampunkesque tasting room in Jerome you can sample wines from both Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards. The tasting room, which also serves up coffee during the morning hours, is open daily. The Caduceus wines reflect Keenan’s adoration for Northern Arizona and his ability to finesse the state’s terroir to create wines most often found in arid parts of Spain and Italy. White lovers should sample the Viognier and Chenin Blanc, while red lovers must try Oneste, a Barbera-Merlot blend. For something really unique, check out the 2013 Lei Li Nebbiolo Rosé, which the tasting room staff describes as

Alcantara Vineyard & Winery (www. alcantaravineyard.com) has been a major player in creating a viable wine industry in the state. The tasting room is open daily. For a truly unique experience, you can tour the winery and vineyard with owner Barbara Predmore every Friday or Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Alcantara offers several wines made from 100 percent locally grown grapes, including a Merlot Rosé, Mourvèdre and Pinot Noir.

The Verde Valley is in Northern Arizona’s red rock countryside and canyons surrounding Cottonwood, Jerome and Sedona, about 90 minutes north of Phoenix. Arizona winemaker (and lead vocalist for metal band Tool) Maynard James Keenan favors Northern Arizona’s “harsh yet mystical” terroir. The area is now home to more than 30 wineries and tasting rooms. These are a few of the favorites, and you can find more online at www.vvwinetrail.com. Page Springs Cellars (www.pagespringscellars.com) is a wine oasis. The tasting room is open daily and offers not only wine SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Pillsbury grows all of his grapes in Southern Arizona (Willcox), but has a tasting room in Cottonwood. You will be able to choose from 14 different wines, mostly Rhône blends, served daily in the tasting room. Be sure to check out the WildChild Red (Sangiovese, Grenache, Shiraz and Merlot), WildChild White (Riesling, Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Symphony) and Roan Red, a Mourvèdre blend.

Flying Leap Vineyards (www. flyingleapvineyards. com) specializes in ultra-premium, proprietary wines. The winery is actually in Elgin, with tasting rooms in Willcox, Bisbee, Elgin and Tucson. You must sample the estate-grown Tempranillo. This oak-aged Spanish wine is mediumbodied with a smooth finish. Another great Rhône varietal blend is Escape, a ViognierMarsanne blend that is reminiscent of honey and summer peaches.

HEAD SOUTH TO SONOITA AVA AND WILLCOX The Sonoita/Elgin Wine Trail is about 45 minutes south of Tucson and is home to Arizona’s only designated American Viticultural Area (AVA). USA Today named the Sonoita/Elgin Wine Trail one of the top 10 wine trails in the U.S. Another hour past Elgin is Willcox. Nearly 75 percent of all of Arizona’s wine grapes are actually grown here, even for many of the wineries elsewhere in the state. You can find everything from bold reds to crisp whites to sweet dessert wines in Willcox. Below are a few of the Southern Arizona favorites, but you can find more, plus a great tasting map, online at www.willcoxwines.com and at www.sonoitawineguild.com. Dos Cabezas Wineworks (www. doscabezaswinery.com) in Sonoita has been producing wines since 1995. The tasting room is open Thursday through

Sunday. Two favorites are the El Norte, a somewhat spicy red blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Counoise. The Pink, perfect for those lazy September afternoons in Arizona, is a lovely rosè blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah that smells like summer—watermelons and strawberries with a touch of an Arizona desert after the monsoon rains. AZ Hops & Vines (www.azhopsandvines.com) is a small winery operated by two sisters in an old converted farmhouse. The tasting room, open Thursday through Sunday, is fun, quirky and family-centric, complete with a petting zoo and outdoor games. The wine labels here are as much fun as the wines. Lawrence Dunham Vineyards (www. lawrencedunhamvineyards.com) is an estate wine grower in Pearce. They grow those same Rhône varietals that thrive here in Arizona—Petite Sirah, Syrah, Grenache and Viognier. You can make an appointment to visit the winery in Southern Arizona, but the tasting room in Old Town Scottsdale is open Wednesday through Sunday. LDV recently started pouring the 2012 Syrah—the winery’s first 100 percent estate-grown Syrah. The vines are babies, only a couple of years old, so this is a chance to experience the birth of a new Arizona industry. There is also an estate-grown Viognier that is similar to a Sauvignon Blanc or dry Riesling. ou know the locale for its amazing seafood, steaks, and handcrafted cocktails. It may not be what first comes to mind for happy hour though—but it should. Think Parmesan Truffle Fries. Kobe Beef Sliders. Oysters on the Half Shell. Tuna Tartare Tacos. Oh, and so much more. We’re talking, of course, about Ocean Prime. Located on High Street, Ocean Prime is not only a dinner destination, but its happy hour is making waves. “The depth of quality and the freshness of the ingredients that we use aren’t surpassed by anybody else. We offer great dishes and cocktails at affordable prices,” says Tony McMahon, operating partner and general manager. “It’s a great deal, but still in an upscale, quality atmosphere.” The restaurant has a sleek, sophisticated vibe, and a renovation earlier this year created a more open patio space that’s perfect for enjoying the outdoor atmosphere. In addition to the set menu, other features are sometimes offered during Happy Hour, says McMahon. And of course, Happy Hour isn’t just about the food. It’s about the drinks, too. And again, Ocean Prime proves top-notch. The cocktails ($8) are handmade utilizing fresh ingredients. Beer prices range from $3-$4, and well/ call drinks from $5-$8. There is also a selection of wines by the glass ($5). In addition to great food and drinks, Ocean Prime has live music on Fridays and Saturdays from 6 p.m. on, so if you head over there early, you can enjoy the music while still enjoying Happy Hour specials, as well. “We take as much pride in our happy hour food as any other dish on the menu,” says Executive Chef Jagger Griffen. 5545 E. estern Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West is finally a reality in Old Town Scottsdale. The City of Scottsdale-owned museum offers locals and visitors a chance to “Find Yourself in the West.” The museum covers not just Scottsdale and Arizona, but all 19 Western states.

The Vision for the Museum

FIND YOURSELF IN THE WEST

Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West redefines the museum BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

Back in the 1980s, Michael Fox (then director of the Heard Museum) worked with Scottsdale Mayor Herb Drinkwater to bring the mayor’s vision for a Scottsdale museum—a place that would celebrate the best of the West—to life. Despite initial support, the idea died. Drinkwater passed away in 1997 without ever seeing his dream realized. A decade later, the idea was resurrected, but stalled with the 2008 recession. Finally, some three decades after Drinkwater and Fox envisioned it, Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West became a reality. As the museum’s director, Fox is thrilled with the result. “A point of civic pride for Scottsdale, Western Spirit is a place where people of all generations and cultures can engage in contemplative and enjoyable journeys of self discovery— a place where Western history can be revealed, today’s region better understood, and tomorrow’s rich opportunities explored.”

Western Spirit works to redefine today’s museum. Marketing Manager Alan DiPerna explains that Western Spirit is designed to be a place of storytelling. “It is an example of the Old West and the New West,” he says. “It explores the myths and legends we’re all familiar with, along with the real West, today’s West.” Uniquely, Western Spirit has no permanent collections. Instead, it features rotating exhibits of art and artifacts from some of the best Western art collectors. Western Spirit includes multimedia kiosks, interactive games, and activities for adults and children. Exhibits include artwork, leather goods and saddles, and artifacts relating to Western history, geography and wildlife.

The Museum The building itself is quite impressive. The 43,000-square-foot $11.4 million facility, which is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certified, is on the site of Scottsdale’s old Loloma Transit Station. The building, which is adjacent to the original transit station, features an entry walkway with an installation piece by Western artist Curtis Pittman called Diamond Bloom, which features colored lights, brass wings and glass panels that create an archway that welcomes visitors. Once inside, guests enter the Scottsdale Charros Gateway Foyer, dominated by artist Maynard Dixon’s 1935 mural Kit Carson with Mountain Men. The museum is intended to be a vital part of the local community. The outdoor sculpture courtyard features changing sculptures. The 135-seat Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Theater/Auditorium hosts performances and special programs. The Museum Store offers a selection of Western-themed art and gifts. Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West is open Tues.-Sat. from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. (with extended hours to 9 p.m. on Thurs. for Scottsdale ArtWalk) and Sun. from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is $13 for adults, with discounts for seniors, military, students and children. There is underground parking for museum visitors. 3830 N. Marshall Way, Scottsdale; www.scottsdalemuseumwest.org.

buff bod takes work. Not only do you have to be determined, as well as dedicated to your daily workout, but you also have to be a strategic groomer. Sweaty skin that isn’t dealt with pronto can lead to breakouts, and worse, a bouquet of body funk. Squash dirt, sweat, and not-sofresh smells with this on-the-go arsenal. Skin Laundry Purifying Makeup Remover Cleansing Cloths Toss these skin-soothing towelettes in your gym bag to dissolve oil and dirt post-workout. Gentle conditioners such as cucumber and chamomile soften skin, while witch hazel and salicylic acid pair up to do the heavy lifting. $15 at Skin Laundry, 480.300.7217. Klorane Dry Shampoo With Oat Milk When you’ve got to choose between an extra set of air squats and washing your hair, go for the squats. This oat milk-fortified dry shampoo saves you time by cleansing hair and scalp sans water. Simply spray it on and after two minutes, brush out the powder to leave hair soft and freshly scented. $20 at Sephora, 480.945.0100. Lavanila The Healthy Deodorant The effectiveness of “natural” deodorants can be dicey, especially for serious athletes. This one takes the extra step of incorporating a beta glucan technology to give odors the boot. Formulated with 100 percent natural soothing essential oils, this funk-fighter goes on clean, with no sticky wetness. $14 at Sephora. Mai Couture Salicylic Acid Blemish Control Oil Blotting Papier If excessive sweat has your skin feeling like an oil slick, blot it away with these talc-free luxury sheets. Bacteria-busting salicylic acid keeps blemishes at bay, while the ultra-absorbent powders mattify, moisturize and refresh your complexion. $20 at Verdé Maison, 480.563.0449.

The convenient built-in brush minimizes mess so you don’t have to worry about a lotion explosion in your gym bag. $30 at Sephora. Unlike a lot of other procedures, CoolSculpting® takes very little time and is pretty simple to fit into your daily life. URBANISM IN THE HEART OF TEMPE

4 TwentyOne West offers a perfect retreat in the heart of the city

C

atering to the discerning tastes and active lifestyles of today’s urbanites, there are 24 homes in the luxury townhome neighborhood of 4 TwentyOne West—and they’re selling fast! “The response to this lifestyle-driven neighborhood has been immediate and enthusiastic,” says developer Irene Clary.

“Ours is a different type of product that has not been seen here previously. Tempe was a natural choice given the high influx of young professionals who prefer to spend their free time at the gym, bicycling to the nearby lake, shopping or dining, rather than maintaining their yard.” Situated at the heart of the downtown

SS_90_93Haute_Sept15.indd 90

Tempe Mill Avenue district, these spacious two- and three-bedroom ensuite homes represent the latest collaboration between Clary and renowned architect Bing Hu, each of whom drew upon their own recollections of hometown architecture. “We feel these quality driven homes are a perfect blend of the classical brownstone, with all the rich architectural detail associated with these exteriors, and the sleek sophistication of the urban-vertical interiors. It’s the best of both worlds, affording the elegance and nostalgia of a classic small-town Americana streetscape with refined, transitional modern floorplans.” Offering three- and four-story plans that range from 1,553 to 2,270 square feet, the property also includes a soothing Zen Garden, and spacious exterior balconies. The open floor plans are accentuated with 11-foot ceilings on the main level, rich hardwood floors, granite countertops, Bosch stainless steel appliances, and Kohler plumbing fixtures. Each home also includes an attached, private two-car garage. The project takes green initiatives into consideration, with low-e Milgard windows and GreenFiber wall structures utilizing 85 percent recycled products that provide solid noise attenuation between the walls. “Despite living in the heart of the city close to entertainment, culture, and work, these private, outdoor living spaces afford our residents a secluded retreat where they can relax or socialize with their neighbors.” Prices range from approximately $365,000 to $534,000. A percentage of sales will be donated to Casa Center for Positive Social Change. For information, visit www.421west. com or call 480.473.3700.

S

ure I could afford this Range Rover HSE. All I need to do is to sell my house and all my investments. The question is if (and that’s a big if) I had $100,000 to $130,000 to spend on a new vehicle, would this be the one? Have I gone completely barmy? It’s certainly tempting. I confess I’m thoroughly smitten with this Range Rover, holding it in the high-esteem I usually reserve for saints. Everything good about automotive luxury and driving is the Land Rover Range Rover amplified and anglicized exponentially: quiet, smooth, capable, luxurious, technologically advanced, with a choice of 17 exterior colors, nine oxford leather saddlery

color choices, and three finishers in figured Macassar wood, shadow walnut wood or grand lacquered wood. Our test Range Rover was Kaikoura stone on the outside with almond/espresso and almond/ivory perforated oxford leather interior trim, including the Macassar wood accent and wood-trimmed heated steering wheel. Even the headlining was unique, trimmed in ivory Morzine. Power was delivered via 340-supercharged horsepower matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission and Land Rover’s world-class Terrain Response System that allows the driver to select from five different settings, depending upon road conditions. Choose snow, mud, sand, rock and general conditions, or let the vehicle do it for you. It’s capable of fording up to 35.4 inches of high-tide monsoon-flooded roads, even as you run the risk of tent city incarceration for ignoring Sheriff Joe’s dictate. The Range Rover is an amazingly able off-road and extreme conditions vehicle, which, for most buyers, is completely unnecessary, yet insanely wonderful to have. And let’s be honest here, it isn’t about using the capability, it’s about having the capability should the occasion arise. (After all, one must keep their Stuart Weitzman’s firmly planted on the deep pile carpeting and not in the mud and guts outside.) The only way somebody’s going to take a $100,000-plus Range Rover off-road is if they fall asleep at the wheel. In a vehicle dedicated to serene sensations and sheer owner delight, our Range Rover came equipped with the HSE package option that includes, among other things, a sliding panoramic roof, heated rear seats, and 20-inch wheels. A comfort package with power reclining rear seats, front refrigerated cooler box, and the Meridan Premium Audio system that sounds like God’s own holy megaphone. Land Rover has built a vehicle that, to my mind, combines the insuperable technology and enormous charisma and craft befitting British luxury. I count it among the few vehicles I could, one day, delight in owning. n exquisite setting overlooking the 3rd green of Monument Golf Course. A true gourmet kitchen with an exhibition cooking design. A two-story stone fireplace. A wine room. And so much more…. This home in the gated community of Talus is truly impressive. Featuring 8,398 square feet, four bedrooms plus a den and bonus room, five-and-a-half bathrooms, and a four-car garage all set on a 1.36-acre lot with golf, mountain and city lights views, it would delight even the pickiest homeowners. A four-way Cantera stone fireplace anchors the formal living and dining spaces, and French doors frame the exquisite views, creating a perfect indoor-outdoor flow. The kitchen includes multiple prep stations and two islands, as well as top-of-the-line appliances. The five bedrooms are all ensuite, and all have access to patios, as well. Other touches throughout the home include coffered and wood beam ceilings, wood plank and tumbled travertine floors, stone accents, custom ironwork lighting fixtures, an oversized laundry room with a pet wash station, and more. The outdoors is just as impressive—a sweeping verandah patio includes multiple seating, dining areas, and fireplaces; and there is also a complete outdoor kitchen with a grill and rotisserie oven. A heated negative edge pool, water features and a spa complete the grounds. 10001 E. Balancing Rock Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85262. you get the biggest return on your personal investment, we’ve checked out some restaurants and dishes that are serving up exciting, nutritious, and nourishing dishes right in your own backyard.

HIRO SUSHI

MAD GREENS–EAT BETTER

Appearances are a tricky thing, but if mom taught us anything it’s to never judge a book by its cover. Hiro Sushi is located in an unassuming location, one in which you might easily pass right by, not realizing the delight that awaits beyond its doors. Big flavors and fresh fare are served up in the dining room. Sashimi (raw sliced fish without rice) is always a great sushi option if you are looking for the healthiest choice, and freshness is key when choosing sashimi. Sashimi is packed with nutrients and protein, but not calories, so it is a great choice. Hiro’s sashimi menu features white fish, albacore, salmon, tuna, octopus and more, along with the option of a complete assortment (highly recommended). There are plenty of options to quickly feed your body and your mind! 9393 N. 90th St., Scottsdale; 480.314.4215; www.hirosushiaz.com.

MAD Greens is all about fine dining fast, and they are serving up huge, filling portions packed full of nutritious ingredients that cater to your specifications. They source their ingredients from local farms (Duncan Family Farms and Abby Lee Farms), along with items from their own farm, and their chef has created a bevy of nutritious options that you can eat while dining in, or order for take-out. All of their menu items have fun historical names. Give their Edgar Allen Poe a try; it’s a generous portion of baby greens, grilled marinated steak, apples, pears, walnuts and blue cheese dressed with a port wine vinaigrette. At only 377 calories per serving, and with 12 grams of protein, it’s sure to give you the energy you need to get through your next workout. 14418 N. drink “A traditional Old Fashioned is made by muddling sugar with bitters, then adding alcohol, and a twist of citrus rind or other fruits,” says Crone. “Our ‘Oaked, Smoked and Spiced’ cocktail flight stays true to the essence of the original Old Fashioned, but showcases trending ingredients and culinary techniques to bring new energy to the American icon.”

The Oaked Sure to be a favorite of the “traditionalist,” the recipe focuses on spotlighting the private label bourbon, which is aged onsite right in the dining room in a Russell’s Reserve Barrel, by simply muddling together with whiskey aged bitters, a sugar cube, and then garnishing with an orange twist and brandied cherry.

THE OLD FASHIONED— BACK IN FASHION

The Smoked In an homage to the days when men would don smoking jackets and light up a cigar to pair with their Old Fashioned, this cocktail’s flavor is developed using Proof’s in-house smoker and homemade root beer bitters. The resulting rich flavors—and intoxicating aromatics—are meant to hit the sense of smell first, and then linger on the taste buds long after the drink is done.

ourbon is back. Or, more accurately, bourbon—always a staple drink of choice by the stereotypical “man’s man” in popular culture—is finally finding female fans. “Over the past decade, the number of women drinking bourbon whiskey has nearly tripled,” says Jon Crone, lead bartender at Proof Canteen at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North. “Thanks to shows like Man Men and unabashed fans of the spirit including Lady Gaga and Johnny Depp, they are very sexy menu options today.” So much so, in fact, that Crone and Proof Canteen (www.proofcanteen.com) partnered with master distiller James “Jimmy” Russell—a 50-plus year veteran of the industry—to develop private label bourbon from Russell’s Reserve, solely

available at Proof. “When it comes to bourbon whiskey making in the United States, Jimmy is aristocracy,” Crone explains. “It’s a small community of men who have mastered bourbon, and within this brotherhood, Jimmy has gained a reputation as ‘the master distillers’ master distiller.’” What makes the private reserve label unique is not only the high proof of the spirit, but the fact that the bourbon bypasses the chill-filtration process. By avoiding the chillfiltration process, it’s bottled with more flavor compounds and a deeper color, which is denoted by an impressive haze when ice or chilled water is added. To showcase the limited edition private label, Crone and his team have developed their first-ever Old Fashioned cocktail flight, available now. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Perhaps the most perfectly paired cocktail of the flight for the season, Crone and Manager Brian Leeds developed this twist on the Old Fashioned thanks to the drinks’ newest fans—women. “How does the old saying go— ‘Woman are sugar and spice and everything nice?’ That’s this cocktail to a ‘T,’” says Crone, who muddles brûléed cinnamon sticks, along with aromatic fruits and a little pepper, to bring out the sugar and spice—not to mention heat—of the bourbon with every sip. Proof patrons can experience the flight for $18, or sample an individual, full-sized drink from the flight for $14. On Friday nights, enjoy the flight at a discounted price of $14. In addition, through October, the restaurant will feature complimentary Old Fashioned flight tastings once a week, showcasing unique techniques and educational elements.

You’ll still be able to order a perfectly prepared steak, as well as a number of woodfired pizzas and creative appetizers. 3831 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.945.6697; www.pinkponyscottsdale.com; $$$ RANCHO PINOT GRILL The exclusive use of seasonal and locally grown products has created an uncomplicated and satisfying menu that consistently receives rave reviews. While you may be familiar with dishes like their Ricotta Gnocchi or Braised Pork Shoulder, you may not be prepared for the extra side of “wow” that seems to accompany every dish. 6208 N. Scottsdale Road, Paradise Valley; 480.367.8030; www.ranchopinot.com; $$$ TAPHOUSE KITCHEN TapHouse Kitchen is gaining a loyal following very quickly. Whether or not this has anything to do with the Shrimp Mac n’ Cheese they feature as an appetizer remains to be seen. The TapHouse Signature Burger is a palatepleasing party waiting to happen; manchego cheese, apple wood smoked bacon, caramelized shallots, and roasted garlic aioli on a challah bun. A bonus for those of you who aren’t sure what to pair your meal with are the suggested beer or wine pairings noted on the menu next to every item. 6137 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.656.0012; www.taphousekitchen.com; $$ THE BEVERLY Here you can expect a more approachable “every man” feel, which manifests itself in the menu and cocktail options. You’ll have the opportunity to partake in classic cocktails like a Pisco Sour or try a modern interpretation, like their Wuthering Heights. You’ll find sliders and flatbreads, along with small and large bite options. The Green Eggs and Ham flatbread is a house favorite. 7018 E. Main St., Scottsdale; 480.889.5580; $$

FOGO DE CHAO BRAZILIAN STEAKHOUSE Fogo de Chao is a carnivore’s sweet, sweet dream. You’re escorted to your seat by some of the friendliest staff in the Valley, and then you get the breakdown of how it all works. Yes, they have a salad bar and it is amazing and vegetables are important—just pace yourself. When you are ready for the meat you’ll turn your table sign to green—and then bring on the gauchos! The gauchos will present 16 cuts of fire roasted meats served tableside. If you need a break, turn your sign to red and take a breather until you’re ready for round two. 6300 N. The atmosphere provides an opulent and posh feel, ensuring that you will feel like a king as you dine on a Delmonico steak in the dining room or nosh on their Mini Tenderloin Sandwiches at the bar. 1689 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.348.1700; www.thecapitalgrille.com; $$$ ROARING FORK Wood fired grilling is such a basic concept, one that when done correctly delivers perfectly cooked dishes with deep and complex flavors. Roaring Fork expertly combines the rugged history of cooking food over a simple wood fire with the creativity and whimsy of the chef, which leads to sophisticatedly simple dishes. The Roaring Fork “Big Ass” Burger is an amazing creation; the meat (wood fired of course), is incredibly juicy, and is topped with poblano pepper, cheddar, smoked pepper bacon, and all the usual burger accoutrements. Pair the burger with the Green Chili Mac & Cheese and you have a joyous spice fest that’s perfect. 4800 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.947.0795; www.roaringfork.com; $$

t’s the ultimate store for kids, likened to what a kid experiencing the now-defunct FAO Schwarz in New York was like—walking into a true wonderland of childhood. Yes, of course we’re talking about the American Girl store in Scottsdale Quarter (15059 N. Scottsdale Road, Ste.100, Scottsdale; www.americangirl. com), one of the most anticipated store openings this year. This 12,000-square-foot retail experience not only offers the coveted American Girl dolls and products, but is a fun, casual environment where kids

can bring their dolls and enjoy lunch or dinner with them at the Bistro, treat their doll to a new hairdo in the Doll Hair Salon, and design T-shirts for both themselves and their dolls at the Creativi-Tees Boutique. “We’re delighted to debut a beautiful new store in Scottsdale and welcome our American Girl fans in the area to a special place designed just for them,” says Jean McKenzie, executive vice president of American Girl. “Whether they’re celebrating a birthday, shopping for the latest American Girl products, or sharing a meal

in the Bistro, girls and their families will find that the new store promises to provide a lasting memory they’ll treasure for years to come.” At the Bistro, dolls are given a special place at the table in American Girl’s “treat seats,” and provided their own doll-sized menus. Plus, the restaurant not only serves meals and desserts, but also an Afternoon Tea. It is also available for parties, and there is a private party room on-site, as well. Truly, the American Girl store is wonderland for kids–and the kid in everyone.

No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
