J

After moving to Cannes, Jo quickly gained an illustrious reputation as the premier stylist of the Cannes Film Festival, where he spent a decade styling celebrity clientele. But it was another move, this time to Arizona, that led him to open Jo Paris Salon – and the Valley has never looked better. We sat down with Jo to find out a few things about his salon, his stylists, and which products he can’t live without. Q: Your salon has quite a sizeable staff. How do you choose your stylists? A: I make sure that we don’t have a revolving door of stylists. We try to make sure we hire stylists with years of experience who add something to the team. Everyone has a specialty, and we try to showcase that strength – we are one of the few salons that can accommodate just about any client with any kind of hair. Q: So you have specialists for every need? Amazing! What services do you offer? A: We offer almost anything. Color, cuts, extension, ombre, balayage, perms, relaxer, keratin treatments, updos and Olaplex. We offer services to men, women, and children. We also have an amazing aesthetician and offer Microblading. Q: With such a variety of services, you must use a lot of products. Are there certain lines you swear by? A: We use four different styling lines. The most prestigious line we offer, and we are incredibly proud to have, is Oribe – they’re the best products I have ever used. They are specially formulated for every hair type and super-concentrated. I’m not sure I have ever used an Oribe product on my client and they aren’t absolutely in love with their hair. The smell alone keeps people coming back, but it really does what it says it will do. For curly hair, we are also a Ouidad salon. Our color

line, Goldwell, is the only one that actually has hair preserving protein in the color itself. It’s easy to work with, true to tone color that lasts much longer than most. It’s also one of the few color lines that we found to be friendly for people with sensitive skin or color allergies. We also happen to have our own in-salon Goldwell educator as part of our staff, so the education we get for color trends makes us experts in the line. Q: Do Jo Paris Salon stylists participate in any other continuing education? A: Yes. You never stop learning, and we try to expand our knowledge. The staff is constantly choosing to learn new things and stay ahead of the trends. They love what they do, and it shows! Q: Your friendly, hospitable service makes everyone feel comfortable. Why is that important to you? A: Everyone deserves to be pampered. We do have some very prominent clients, but we also have everyday regular people. I wanted to make a place where someone could come in as they are, have a cup of coffee and maybe make a friend while doing it. Our guests can expect that every experience they have with us will be a great one, from their very first visit.

An unintentional theme woven throughout this issue is community. It was only when writing this note and taking in the contents as a whole that I had this realization. Community is one of the pillars in Joe Pizzimenti’s redefined five Cs of Arizona (page 23). Community is at the heart of the work done by Kim Marie, who, in her cover story, shares the winding path she took into film production and why this art form is so impactful (page 38). Community is exactly what coworking spaces (page 82) are intended for, to give solopreneurs and workfrom-home folks a place in which to connect. Likewise, community is fostered at fitness studios and festivals (pages 80 and 76), happenings like The Powerhouse Women Event (page 70), and through shared travel experiences (page 95). Joe Pizzimenti breathes new life into the state’s famed five Cs with a passion project called AZ5C

Joe Pizzimenti loves Arizona. But, like so many of us, he is no native. Pizzimenti grew up in a blue-collar Italian family with five older brothers and a younger sister in Detroit, where the family business was in auto supplies.

“For the rest of my family, it was a no-brainer to work for the family after high school, but I just knew it wasn’t my path,” says Pizzimenti, who moved here sight unseen in 1984 to attend Arizona State University. During this time, Arizona lived up to its famous five Cs:

Pulse UP CLOSE cotton, cattle, citrus, copper and climate. “There were cotton fields, cattle farms and citrus groves as far as the eye could see,” Pizzimenti says. “And the year before I moved down here, there was a massive copper mine strike, so certainly that C was front and center as well.” Of course, there was also the climate. “I lived for the heat of the summers – and all that time in the pool. And I woke up every winter morning thanking my lucky stars that there was no snow to shovel,” Pizzimenti says. When he graduated, however, the family still expected him to come back to Detroit long term. “Somehow, at just 22, I gathered the courage to tell my massive family no and set out to make my own way in New York City,” says Pizzimenti, who moved to the Big Apple in 1987, eventually earning a marketing position with WNEW-FM, the then-top rock station in the country. His radio career would explode over the next five years, eventually taking him back to lead a team in Michigan, but he never forgot his happy place: Arizona. “I had to find my way back. It was now or never at that time, so, in 1992, I picked up and moved my entire life to the Valley for good,” Pizzimenti says. He eventually joined KTAR-AM’s team before opening up his own graphic design firm, Square 1 Design. In the late 1990s, websites were still a relatively new “fad,” but Pizzimenti – now a father to three young Arizona natives – rightly felt they were the future and slowly transitioned the business. In fact, in 1999, his team built Scottsdale Healthcare’s first real web presence. “My team would soon partner with a massive national outfit, which gave us the chance to work with everyone from Dial Corp. and Best Western to Adidas and Intel when it came to branding and design,” Pizzimenti says. In 2001, he broke off and partnered to open Spin Six, which he grew to be one of the most respected digital agencies in the Southwest. But by the mid-2000s, he was ready to do it all – hiring, training, business development and content creation – on his own. Inspired by a painting of a pudgy fish in his office (artwork from the Pee Wee’s Big Adventure movie set, no less), he formed a creative agency, Bigfish Creative Group, in 2006. Pizzimenti’s mission: to be a big fish in what Arizona was starting to become, a much bigger pond. He also wanted to start thinking outside the pond (or, rather, box) when it came to creative concepts and brand storytelling. And though the recession hit him – not to mention the state – hard, Pizzimenti, like Arizona itself, persevered and came out stronger. Today, Bigfish boasts more than 30 employees and a multistory office along 1st Avenue in Old Town Scottsdale. From that perch – in addition to excellent views of Camelback Mountain – Pizzimenti has been able to watch how Arizonans responded to the financial and real estate crisis. “I don’t think I am alone in feeling the electricity pumping through the city, really the entire state. And it surely isn’t being fueled by cattle and cotton anymore,” Pizzimenti says. “It’s time the world knew it, too.”

Enter Pizzimenti’s passion project: AZ5C, an interactive website, campaign and platform Pizzimenti is using to showcase how far Arizona has come in the areas of culture, community, connectivity, commerce and catalyst. “You can taste it in our chef-driven restaurant and bars, and see it firsthand as new buildings and businesses flood in by the day,” Pizzimenti says. “Arizona is at the forefront of connecting data, ideas, processes and people in new and effective ways. Arizonans are competing, and winning, while at work and at play like never before.” Phase one of AZ5C includes videos detailing each of the new five Cs and then features some of Arizona’s highest-profile business and community leaders including business owners, lawmakers, nonprofit champions and tastemakers sharing their stories of success along with which of the new Cs represent them best. There will also be merchandise available for purchase in mid-September and an extensive traditional and digital campaign to support the effort nationwide. Besides helping her clients declutter and get organized, business owner and mom of two Abby Kahn helps people who are too busy, too confused or too stressed create relaxed, beautiful environments with her personal organization company, Abbsolutely Organized (www.abbsolutelyorganized.com). Since taking the steps to turn her hobby into her profession, Kahn’s services have evolved. “At first, I started organizing children’s rooms then moved on to organizing professional offices, pantries, kitchens, storage closets and entire homes.” With her background in education, family-focused projects are her favorite. “When organizing playrooms and study areas for children, I am able to cultivate spaces that are developmentally appropriate to the level of the child.” Equipped with her creative and detail-oriented sense of thinking, Kahn continues to help her clients create positive emotional connections with their space. “I love when clients tell me that they are happier at home because they are living in an organized environment. They have more time to be doing the things they love versus always looking for things they can’t find or opening up messy closets.” Kahn’s current focus includes helping people develop techniques to manage their newly organized spaces and finding charitable organizations that can benefit from items her clients no longer need.

Laurel Roach takes her healthy fitness message to businesses across Arizona

Laurel Roach started modeling in high school. Back then, she grappled with anorexia and bulimia. Her posthigh school years weren’t much healthier as she partied too much and didn’t know about proper nutrition or adopting a fitness routine. “I believe that young adults today feel much like I did – insecure with a terrible body image,” says Roach, who is married to former NHL and European hockey player, Andy Roach. “Now, they compare themselves to celebrities on social media, which just makes them feel even more inadequate.” She has since become devoted to the causes of fitness and fighting obesity. After ditching bad habits, Roach made her way into corporate America, though, after several years, she grew tired of 70-hour work weeks. With a focused mission of healthy living, she became the owner of TriFIT Wellness in 2017 and joined a program through Entrepreneurs’ Organization to help get her business earning over $1 million per year while investing in herself and business coaching. Eventually, Roach partnered with Stephan Poschik of Corporate Health Consulting, a company based in Austria. In licensing Poschik’s process, she now offers a valuable health service to Arizona companies by bringing a viable program to small and midsize businesses that includes a level of accountability. “Most corporate health programs come in, do a ‘rah-rah’ event, and talk about nutrition and fitness, but then nobody knows what to do after that,” Roach says. “In order to make lifestyle changes, people need oneon-one support and hand-holding.” Targeting companies with 50 to 500 employees, Roach offers four quarterly events at a workplace. “Fifty percent participation is typical for this kind of event,” she explains of the first “intake” event. “We track body fat, visceral fat, water weight, bone density, and metabolic age for each employee.” The three additional events that occur within a year cover select topics such as nutrition, which includes one-on-one employee sessions to discuss health goals. “I will give specific, manageable action items to work on during the upcoming 90 days and then we will retest those employees.” Most of all, accountability is key. “If people are healthy and happy and understand that work/life balance, it’s a win-win for everybody.”

It’s not every day a filmmaker can say they’ve made the jump into filmmaking from law enforcement. As writer, producer and director Kim Marie has done just that, bringing inspirational messages along the way as the founder and president of film production company, Mirror Dog Productions (www.mirrordogproductions.com). Marie hails from Michigan but after living in California for about 15 years, discovered Arizona and found her home in the Valley. “Last spring, I came out for the Phoenix Film Festival,” says the self-proclaimed serial entrepreneur. “I ended up coming here and haven’t left. It’s such a short hike to Los Angeles, and I don’t mind driving or hopping on a flight.” With her production company, Marie shoots films in locations around the U.S., including in Arizona, but being close to the film production hub in Los Angeles is convenient for her. The filmmaker is embracing life in Scottsdale and especially Arizona’s outdoor pursuits, including hiking Tom’s Thumb, kayaking down the Salt River, paddleboarding Lake Pleasant, and finding solace in Sedona. “Arizona is filled with such richness of history, scenery, spirituality and adventures,” Marie says. “It has brought such richness and added value to my journey.” As far as her journey into filmmaking, that could be the intriguing subject of its own movie. Marie started her career as a sheriff deputy and volunteer firefighter in Michigan. “I always wanted to serve my community and being from Michigan, I grew up with the Midwestern sensibility of ‘have a safe job.’ I had to kind of put away my dreams of going to Hollywood and being a filmmaker.” As a child, Marie was always behind the camera and dreamt of pursuing that as a career, but she didn’t think it was possible. Duty called and she started working as a junior explorer sheriff deputy at the age of 13 and taking criminal justice classes in high school, eventually attending community college in Michigan before moving on to UCLA where she studied scriptwriting. Marie’s “a-ha” moment came courtesy of her animals. In addition to her filmmaking aspirations, she was also an animal behaviorist, training and showing golden retrievers and training German shepherds and horses while she was working in law enforcement. “I was doing commercials for the automotive industry with the dogs, and one day a model didn’t show up,” she says. “They asked me to step in, and I happened to be the right size and what they were looking for. I thought, ‘this is fun,’ and I had always thought about acting. I got bit by the bug with that, and then I was on a journey to find my truth, passion and purpose.” She embarked on a spiritual journey and discovered that the entertainment industry served her life purpose. “I could be in hundreds of thousands of peoples’ homes at one time – making a difference, reaching them, touching hearts, and bringing education, hope and awareness into their lives,” says Marie, whose passion led her to found Mirror Dog Productions in 2010.

Connection and Collaboration As a full-service production company, Mirror Dog Productions’ mission is to captivate audiences with quality, compelling film artistry to engage conversation and inspire change. This is rooted in Marie’s vision to shape the world and assist people in finding their purpose, all through the art of film. Marie’s latest feature film, Urban Myths – which she wrote,

directed and produced – continues this message. As a psychological/paranormal thriller taking place on ancient Native American burial grounds, the film is a journey of self-discovery that weaves different spiritualties, stories and myths to offer a deeper message. “Everything I wrote about … all those myths do exist,” Marie says. “There really is an Indian burial ground near where we filmed called Witchy Wolves, and they say that wolf spirits protect it.” During the course of filming, Marie worked with Native Americans who live in Michigan. “They did a beautiful blessing and ceremony over me, and the elders came down. It was amazing.” Debuting last year, Urban Myths is currently on the film festival circuit, and, to date, the movie has been chosen for the Accolade Global Film Competition, Valley Film Festival, La Femme International

Film Festival, and Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, winning multiple awards along the way. One of the more prestigious awards bestowed upon Urban Myths was in the category of Feature Film Award as given by The American Film Award, an international film and screenwriting competition by filmmakers and for filmmakers. Urban Myths marked Marie’s directorial debut, and, by all accounts, the experience has proven that she has serious film chops. “I did everything on this film from start to finish – writing, producing, directing and editing. I had my hands on all of it,” Marie explains. “I don’t think you can learn in college what you can actually doing your own feature film. It is the best education anybody could get!” Mirror Dog Productions is involved in more than film, too. “We do cause-related marketing, advertising and collaborations with our films, TV series, web series, and different projects we have,” Marie says. Following suit, causes and a purpose come with all of Marie’s Mirror Dog projects. “We give a voice to the voiceless, help lift the fallen, restore the broken, and help the hurting,” she says. “We strive to help others make our world a better place. We believe that through the art we create, our collaborations, and our outreach we can accomplish our mission and touch lives.” In conjunction with that belief, Marie collaborates with different nonprofit organizations to help support them and share their respective messages. Marie has worked with organizations connected to causes for veterans, foster children, first responders and service animals. In fact, animals are a big part of her journey. Ever since she was in public service, Marie has had service dogs with her every step of the way, including being on set. Two of them even got the chance to grab some of the Hollywood shine. “They were in Urban Myths,” Marie says of her golden retriever, Miranda, and Tibetan terrier, Jahzara. She has had the dogs since they were pups and calls them her guardian angels. “I’ve worked with Leader Dogs for the Blind, and I’ve gone into nursing homes and children’s hospitals for over 20 years. I bring the dogs to lighten up their day and give service any way we can.” At the heart of her work is connection and collaboration, two things that propel Marie forward and also led her to where she is today. Marie counts Nancy Meyers and Jody Foster among her favorite women directors, and her personal mentors include industry veteran, writer, producer and UCLA professor, Chris Knopf, who worked on projects including Zane Grey Theater and Pope John Paul II. She particularly loved that she could draw on Knopf’s experiences from the golden era of Hollywood, which she now pours into Mirror Dog Productions. “I aspire to be a part of the movement to bring back the elegance, integrity, art and magic of Hollywood and the media from the classic era of the ’50s,” she says. As for what’s next, Mirror Dog Productions is moving fullsteam ahead with a few projects in post-production and a couple of series in the works, along with another feature film currently in pre-production. “I live my life purpose-driven, and that is the foundation I build everything on,” Marie says. “Success is measured by the lives you impact on a daily basis in a positive way. The positive change we bring and the level of outreach we have can bring hope, inspiration, education, and awareness to lives all around the world.”

Andrew McLaughlin GENERAL MANAGER, BOURBON STEAK AT FAIRMONT SCOTTSDALE PRINCESS

Andrew McLaughlin was born into a family business, but it was a far cry from the hospitality industry. As Arabian horse trainers, McLaughlin’s family moved to Arizona in the mid-1980s from Iowa given the Valley’s booming equine industry. For many of his early years, McLaughlin thought his future was with the animals. But at age 16, McLaughlin took a job at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale’s former Golden Swan restaurant. Entranced by the intricacies of the job, McLaughlin jumped at every chance he had to take on more responsibility despite his young age. By 20, though he could not yet enjoy wine, McLaughlin became focused on earning his sommelier certification. Working under mentor and then-executive chef William Bradley, McLaughlin earned his level 1 certification as well as a dual role as general manager and sommelier when the Hyatt reimagined Golden Swan into VU. In 2008, McLaughlin joined the Michael Mina Group to open Bourbon Steak at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, first as a server. Before taking on the general manager role, McLaughlin worked at Mina’s various concepts, notably RN74 in Seattle and Pabu at Four Seasons Hotel in Baltimore. By 2013, armed with a level 2 sommelier certification and the experience of someone twice his age, McLaughlin made his way back to Arizona as the general manager of Bourbon Steak. Over the past five years, McLaughlin has worked to evolve the concept of Scottsdale dining, becoming the first restaurant in the country with a single-barrel Bulleit bourbon program while adding tableside Japanese whiskey and absinthe ceremonies, respectively, and interactive tasting menus. Today, McLaughlin is working on his advanced sommelier certification while mentoring the next generation of talent on the team and supporting local causes like MASK and Arizona Liver Alliance. “I want to reinvest in my people and my community the way so many invested in me,” McLaughlin says.

Jason Goetz

GENERAL MANAGER, SOL MEXICAN COCINA Jason Goetz grew up in Iowa with aspirations of being a pilot, athlete, comedian and even a chef. But, given his family business was in construction supply, he assumed his life would follow a “bluer collar” trajectory. Once he graduated from The University of Iowa, however, he had a long conversation with his grandfather, who encouraged him to chase his dreams. Inspired, Goetz set out for the Arizona Golf Academy in 2007 at age 26. He worked part time for P.F. Chang’s before the move, so it was an easy transition to the Valley, where he took on serving, bartending and eventual managerial duties at the Scottsdale-based chain. Before he knew it, 10 years had passed since he started with the brand, and while professional golf wasn’t in the cards, restaurant management was. In 2012, Goetz was offered an opportunity to serve as the general manager for another up-and-coming restaurant concept, Sol Mexican Cocina. Since taking the reins, he has not only led the team in Scottsdale, but at Sol locations in both California and Colorado. Because of this, Goetz also operates in a regional role, serving all locations in Arizona, California and Colorado. He has assisted in hiring the entire culinary teams as well as helped develop Sol’s signature muddled cocktails, each focused on giving guests a full sensory experience. In recent years, Goetz even traveled to Mexico to aid in curating tequilas and mezcals for Sol’s four locations, and recently spent several months helping re-energize the Colorado restaurant, going so far as to move there temporarily to ensure success. “Life has been good to me. I do not credit my success to luck, as success is really preparation meeting opportunity,” Goetz says. “I’m a firm believer in setting goals for yourself and working hard toward them while helping others along the way.” In his spare time, Goetz raises funds for and volunteers at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Blank Check Children’s Hospital in Iowa. He also oversees Sol’s charitable giving arm, which has benefited the Boys & Girls Clubs and The Challenge Foundation.

Mary Anna Ford

GENERAL MANAGER, SAPPORO On first blush, MaryAnna Ford looks the epitome of femininity. But that’s quite contrary. In fact, Ford – who was raised in Texas with three older brothers – wanted to be a stunt woman and race cars when she grew up. Known for jumping off roofs and never without her skateboard, she spent her early life breaking more bones than all her older brothers combined. But after one too many concussions, she turned her attention to another passion: music. Ford’s voice earned her a scholarship to study music at a small college in Texas, where she married her high school sweetheart. But, in the early 1990s when her marriage fell apart and Ford was left with one young daughter and another on the way, the now-single mother moved to Arizona to be close to family. Initially, she managed apartment communities, but given that she had worked off and on in restaurants during high school and college, by the early 2000s, she started working at then-hot spot Jilly’s as well as in real estate. In 2004, she was working as a realtor, but was also recruited by Sapporo for what she assumed would be a side gig. Then the real estate market crashed. Ford persevered, pouring herself into Sapporo and joining its management team by 2007. In 2009, when Sapporo was purchased by worldwide restaurant juggernaut Tavistock, they not only kept Ford on but also invested in her culinary education, inviting her to dozens of their concepts nationwide, where she learned the art of the hospitality sector. “Pablo Picasso said ‘learn the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist,’” Ford says. “I voraciously observed, listened and learned so that I could master my craft and then paint my own picture, forge my own way in the industry.” Overseeing all business and culinary operations at Sapporo, Ford still visits sister concepts but, now, she helps others through her experience and knowledge. She also oversees local charitable giving, including a partnership with the Arizona Cardinals to host events for women touched by abuse and cancer.

GENERAL MANAGER, J&G STEAKHOUSE AT THE PHOENICIAN When John Lennon was in school, a teacher asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. When he wrote “happy” as his answer, the teacher told him he didn’t understand the assignment to which Lennon famously responded that she didn’t understand life. Much like Lennon, Patrick Norton simply seeks happiness out of life. A New England native, Norton guided his every decision by what would make him happy. This ideal led him to study French and history in college, where he bussed tables on the side. Eventually, Norton’s foray into the culinary world took him to France, where he gained experience in global cuisine. During a chance meeting on a subway while there, Norton met his nowwife, a Frenchwoman who he brought back to America in the 1990s. Back in the states, his global hospitality experience brought him extraordinary opportunities over the next 15-plus years, including working with famed chef David Burke, a teaching position at the French Culinary Institute in New York City, and general manager positions with The Palm Restaurant and world-renowned Smith & Wollensky steakhouses nationwide. But the desert is what made him happy. So much so, in 2011 the Nortons relocated to Scottsdale, where Norton joined the then-new J&G Steakhouse at The Phoenician as part of Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s leadership team. Norton and J&G quickly earned acclaim from Wine Spectator and USA Today. In 2015, when The Phoenician purchased J&G from Jean-Georges Restaurants, Norton stayed on, leading the restaurant while the resort underwent a multi-million-dollar, multi-year renovation. Today, Norton is still at the helm while J&G undergoes some minor upgrades into the fall. “I live for five o’clock, when the metaphoric curtain goes up and our team is live, performing nightly to guests’ cheers and applause,” Norton says. “In fact, nothing makes me happier.”

Nick Accardo

GENERAL MANAGER OF BAR AND NIGHTLIFE OPERATIONS, TRIYAR ENTERTAINMENT GROUP Nick Accardo grew up in Ahwatukee, quickly earning his EMT certification once he graduated high school with eyes on becoming a firefighter or getting into strength and conditioning training for elite athletes. Eager to earn income while in school for both, Accardo accepted a fine dining server position at the now-closed restaurant, Barcelona, in the early 2000s. A natural talent, Accardo was eventually scooped up by Myst Nightclub, where he could work at night, while studying and interning at a local mixed martial arts gym by day. At one point, his popularity even led to a guest bartending gig at Myst’s popular neighbor, Martini Ranch, on Sundays. In 2006, Accardo was recruited to Jackrabbit Lounge, known for its celebrity clientele, where he became a VIP bottle runner, all while still in school. By 2008, Accardo was asked to join Triyar Entertainment Group to open W Scottsdale and its three in-house bars/lounges. The W quickly felt like home, especially when he met a fellow bartender-turned-girlfriend, Dawn. Eventually, Accardo put school on hold to focus on hospitality full time. In 2015, Dawn and Accardo – both in management positions at the hotel by then – received exciting news that they were pregnant. They married in 2016, and Dawn, who had taken over the role of general manager, decided to take some time off to be with the baby, so, in a twist of fate, Accardo stepped into her role. “Be it science, mixology, parenting or management, the more you know, the more there is to know each day,” says Accardo, who, today, heads all of the resort’s major events including their famous Halloween and New Year’s Eve extravaganzas as well as day-to-day operations of W Scottsdale’s Shade Lounge, WET Dayclub and Living Room Lounge as well as bar operations at Aloft Scottsdale nearby. Accardo also helps spearhead the nonprofit efforts at the hotel, which, along with Triyar overall, supports dozens of charities.

Nick Campisano

GENERAL MANAGER, BORN & RAISED HOSPITALITY Tucson native Nick Campisano’s father raised him to believe in sweat equity. Though the elder Campisano is credited with helping co-found and design Canyon Ranch resort and spa, for example, it didn’t mean the younger Campisano got special treatment when he applied to work there in high school, starting as a busboy and dish washer. The hard work he put in at his “dad’s office” inspired Campisano to venture to Southern California in his early 20s to seek out more work and new industry experiences. At the time, traditional dive bars along the Pacific coast were ripe for an upgrade so Campisano started (and eventually became a partner in) a business that restored and refreshed them along the coast from Los Angeles to San Jose. Campisano would work as manager of each one as needed, but eventually took a break to study business and law. While there in 2006, Morgan Hotel Group scooped him up to help breathe new life into the Mondrian Scottsdale, which brought Campisano back to Arizona. From there, he would join Fox Restaurant Concepts (FRC), helping open Modern Steak and the first Culinary Dropout. In 2012, when his niece was born with special needs, Campisano stepped back from management to focus on family, leaving FRC and taking a job at The Parlor. There, he met then-beverage director Joshua James. By 2014, the two, who shared a passion for Asian cuisine and culture, dreamt up Clever Koi in Central Phoenix. Its success led to a second location in Gilbert in 2016 and the beginning of Born & Raised Hospitality, the group that manages these restaurants. “Food, beverage and hospitality is a vessel to create a memorable experience for the guest, but, more importantly, it serves to inspire the team at the restaurant,” says Campisano, who still serves as general manager of Clever Koi. Today, Campisano and James have two more venues in the works: Fellow Osteria at ASU SkySong and Across the Pond, literally across from Clever Koi Phoenix.

Matthew Wohleb

GENERAL MANAGER, NOOK KITCHEN ARCADIA AND DILLY DALLY LOUNGE A Scottsdale native, Matthew Wohleb was fascinated with drawing and – by middle school – graphic design. After high school, Wohleb studied marketing, intent on working in advertising, where he could dabble in graphics and help tell visual stories for brands “just like Matthew McConaughey in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” Though he would graduate in his early 20s with that marketing degree, by the time graduation rolled around, Wohleb had found a new vocational passion: wine. During college and immediately after in the mid-2000s, Wohleb worked for the company that formerly owned Cowboy Ciao, Kazimierz World Wine Bar, See Saw and Digestif. There, he became entranced by wine. Ironically, Wohleb’s mother lived in Sonoma, and though he visited her every summer while growing up, the wine bug didn’t bite until all those years later. A level 1 sommelier by age 21 and advanced sommelier soon after, Wohleb stayed with the restaurant group and became the “the wine guy,” known for carrying a walkie-talkie so any of the four venues could radio in for wine suggestions and for his nightly jogs on Stetson Drive between venues to offer personalized guest guidance. In 2010, former colleague Frank Vairo recruited Wohleb as beverage manager of his new Cave Creek restaurant, Amaro, where he worked for three years before partnering with Vairo to open Nook Kitchen Arcadia in 2013. Nine months later, they would buy Dilly Dally Lounge. “There is a voice in my head always whispering, ‘Do better. Strive,’ Wohleb says. “Launching my own concepts, and then caring for their operations, makes me push harder every day.” In addition to serving as a partner and general manager of Nook Kitchen Arcadia and Dilly Dally Lounge, Wohleb is also a partner at Nook Kitchen’s Downtown Phoenix location and The Bar in Arcadia. Additionally, he is an avid supporter of Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center as well as the Epilepsy Foundation.

In 2012, she completed residency training in psychiatry at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI. During her time at MCW, she served as Chief Resident for the Milwaukee VA and gained an affinity for treating veterans. “I have several family members who are veterans and so is my husband,” Dr. Wicklund explains. “My rotation at the VA was not my only psychiatry rotation, but an elective rotation I chose to do during my fourth year that solidified my interest in psychiatry. I love to give back and it’s a way I felt I could give back to my country, too.” She relocated to Scottsdale after her residency in 2012 and joined the medical staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the inpatient setting at Valley Hospital. In 2013, she joined the Phoenix VA where she is still on staff, working with patients in inpatient and outpatient settings. Dr. Wicklund was excited to take on the position of medical director for Fountain Hills Recovery in June 2018 because of the focus on treating veterans and first responders. Because she is still working four days a week at the VA, her position at Fountain Hills Recovery allows for better continuity of care for patients suffering from substance abuse. There are two separate residential homes – one for men and one for women. She can follow her patients’ treatment from the

more intense residential substance abuse setting to the outpatient setting of her own private outpatient practice, Mindfully Integrated Health, and vice versa. She is proud to work with patients in a peaceful and respectful environment that offers a comprehensive approach to recovery. “I really like that Fountain Hills Recovery is doing recovery for the right reasons,” Dr. Wicklund says. “They are looking to help people. Substance abuse is so rampant in this country, particularly with opiate addiction. The owners, Natalie and John Salem really seem like they’re doing this to help others, especially first responders and veterans and that’s my soft spot.” There are a wide variety of patients at Fountain Hills recovery. “There are some veterans and first responders,” says Dr. Wicklund. “But, that’s not everyone, and it’s nice to see an array of people that come from across the country.” She is excited about the new component of working with patients from other areas of the country, as since her relocation to Arizona, she had exclusively been treating people from Arizona. Dr. Wicklund explains, “This is not the typical recovery program. There is staff here that are also in recovery. They understand from personal experience. They are very good at picking up when someone is leaving something out or just listening to get to the underlying issues of alcoholism or drug use.” “I’m really comfortable with dual diagnosis,” she says. “Having worked at the VA, there is a significant amount of dual diagnosis, whether that’s alcohol abuse, opiates or meth and mental illness. I’ve seen a lot of it and treated a lot of it.” Dr. Wicklund’s passion continues to be witnessing her patients’ success. “I love to see folks get better. I love to hear them say they’re feeling better and that they’re able to work with the program and be optimistic that it will work for them,” she finishes. splint or as a last resort, surgical intervention. Dr. Farahani recently opened the Heel Pain Centers of Arizona within his north Phoenix practice, offering a place for patients to receive focused ESWT therapy. The therapy has almost zero down time, saving a patient 5-7 weeks in recovery time, in addition to saving the expense of a surgical center or hospital fees. “There is a strong cost benefit in dollars and no loss in work time,” Dr. Farahani says. “ESWT gives patients an extra modality for dealing with plantar fasciitis.” “I am very passionate about providing quality care to each of my patients. Sleep apnea is one vitally important area that Dr. Clark treats. “Utilizing Cone Beam 3-D X-ray technology that gives a 3-D rendering of all the hard tissues and neck region, we look at the airway and visually see if there are any obstructions that could be occurring in the back of the throat that might be causing obstructive sleep apnea,” he says. Sleep apnea can have severe effects on someone’s health, including cardiovascular disease. Traditionally, a CPAP mask has been one tool in effectively treating sleep apnea. “We can now design oral appliances that have the same benefit,” Dr. Clark explains. “The appliance helps keep the lower jaw in a more forward position preventing the back of the tongue and soft tissue in the back of the throat from collapsing.” The appliance allows the airway to stay open and provide oxygen while someone sleeps. Dr. Clark arranges a sleep test to be done conveniently in

a patient’s home. The information collected from the sleep study is then submitted to a certified sleep physician who can make an Obstructive Sleep Apnea diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is received, the patient is fitted with the appliance. He works with the patients medical insurance to help cover of the cost. After 6 months of wearing the device, the doctor will arrange for another in home sleep study to ensure effectiveness. The annual event is in honor of retired Phoenix Police Department Detective Jason Schechterle, whose story is a testament of true love and dedication. Growing up, Schechterle was determined to serve as a Phoenix police officer and after serving

four years in the Air Force, he achieved his goal to work on the streets of Phoenix as a police officer. Just 14 months into what was supposed to be a lifelong career, a taxi traveling at more than 100 mph struck Schechterle’s patrol car, resulting in the car bursting into flames and trapping him inside. Through a series of miraculous circumstances, Schechterle survived the crash but suffered severe burns to over 40 percent of his body, which drastically altered his appearance – but not his spirit. At this gala, guests will come together to honor Schechterle’s strength and courage as well as that of all first responders.

AMG, Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance speed shop, has been hammering out a steady stream of unrestrained, tire-shredding, asphalt-ripping street machines for more than 30 years. The GT R is its latest. If you’re familiar with Germany’s famous motorsports complex, Nürburgring (nicknamed “Green Hell”), it’s worth knowing that the GT R got around the track in 7 minutes and 10 seconds, which Mercedes claims is a record for rear-wheel-drive cars. Low, wide and inspired by the 300 SL Gullwing racer, GT R sports a snarling, aggressive front end. For those seeking to avoid the massive, tourist-laden areas while enjoying the absolute best Lake Michigan has to offer, consider New Buffalo, the largest of the eight Southwest Michigan communities that make up Harbor Country. Just over an hour from downtown Chicago and less than 30 minutes from the iconic University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, New Buffalo is located in Berrien County along 15 miles of pristine shoreline.

Their specialty is pairing handmade, locally sourced small bites with Midwest flair – think heirloom tomato gazpacho, creamy pimiento cheese dip, and grilled bruschetta – with small-batch wines by the glass. Like the wine, the food makes this one of the best hidden hot spots in the area.

MAD ABOUT MEZCAL The smoky liquor that’s making its mark and where to find it

Less than 10 years ago, a million liters of mezcal, a spirit derived from agave much like tequila, were produced. By contrast, last year, farmers and distillers produced 6 million liters of the spirit, which is now sold in 27 countries. But how is it so different than tequila? “First, tequila can only be made from blue agave, whereas mezcal comes from nearly any agave variety,” says Supreet Singh of Breakthru Beverage Arizona. “Second, tequila can only legally be produced in Jalisco, Mexico, whereas mezcal comes from several Mexican states. Third, the production process is different, hence the distinctly smoky flavor of mezcal.” Intrigued? Here’s a guide on how to get your mezcal on.

Arcadia Farms first opened in 1990 as a small bakery. Nearly 30 years later, the now-Arcadia Farms Café has grown into a quaint place to gather for breakfast and lunch. With dishes like the lump crab cakes ($18), it’s easy to see why. They are made with lumpgrade crab meat, diced red bell peppers, organic chives, housemade mayonnaise, eggs, breadcrumbs and Old Bay seasoning. The mixture is formed into cakes and sauteed to order. Two are plated on a bed of field greens, julienned carrots, jicama and mango salsa, similarly made with peppers and chives. Puffy rice noodles are added for texture, and the dish is finished with a paprika-infused lime vinaigrette. Free from fillers, the crab shines, with the citrus adding balanced acidity. FORBIDDEN FRUIT

Farm & Craft’s refreshing Cucumber Melon cocktail is true to its name

Farm & Craft believes in sourcing ingredients locally for its cocktail program as well as weeding out artificial flavors and sweeteners. The brand is also a huge advocate for decreasing wastefulness. “For this reason, we offer our guests our Forbidden Fruit menu, where we use every element of the fresh fruit, quite literally,” says Matt Thompson, beverage director for Farm & Craft’s parent company, Riot Hospitality Group. The Forbidden Fruit cocktails not only use the juices of each fruit, but also the remains (such as the rind or skin) as the drinks’ vessel and garnish. “There are four options, including two – our Paloma and Greyhound – made with and served in a massive grapefruit, and then two – our Spicy Melon and Cucmber Melon – served in a whole watermelon,” Thompson says. The guest favorite Cucumber Melon ($14) is made by coring a watermelon and juicing its pieces, double-straining the juice into a shaker. Thompson then adds fresh lime juice, a little agave syrup, and Prairie Cucumber Vodka (which is distilled from organic corn) to the juice. The lime provides some zest to the flavor profile, while the agave syrup brings out the sweetness of the fruit. After a few good shakes, Thompson strains the shaker over the cored watermelon, which has been filled with crushed ice, and then tops it off with ginger beer for some bubbly action. Justin Macy is the corporate executive chef for CIVANA Carefree, a newly launched resort focused on wellness, mindfulness and all things fresh when it comes to cuisine.

You come from a long line of chefs! My grandmother was the chef back in the day at Biosphere II, the world’s largest environmental science laboratory (and yes, they had a restaurant inside!). My mother was a chef at Miraval in Tucson. Growing up, however, I was narrowly focused on football, with a full-ride scholarship to play in college by age 15. It wasn’t until later that I realized what rock stars I had in the family. So, how did you turn to cooking? I was working part-time at Miraval – thanks to Mom. With football out of the picture, I was a little lost, so I was just going through the motions in many aspects of my life. Then at 18 years old, I became a father. Everything changed. I buckled down. And you clearly had a knack for it. Tell us about the journey. I worked at Miraval from 1998 to 2016, and as executive chef from 2012 until my departure. Our focus on healthy cuisine earned us national acclaim and some amazing opportunities, including co-authoring three books and appearing on everything from Chopped to The Real Housewives of New Jersey. How did you make your way to CIVANA? After Miraval, I took a brief respite, then joined Tanque Verde Ranch, where I had the chance to reinvent the restaurant. A friend convinced me to check out CIVANA earlier this year, and I fell in love. Tell us about your CIVANA concepts. Cafe Meto is adjacent to the 22,000-squarefoot spa, so our focus is spa cuisine. At Terras, we have a little naughty (think select cheeses, nitrate-free bacon and grass-fed meats) along with a lot of nice (aka healthy options). What would readers be surprised to know about you? HOW SWEET IT IS Sweet Dee’s Bakeshop opens in Old Town Scottsdale

Ever had a Cruffin? If not, Danielle O’Day, who is among the first bakers in the Valley to develop a recipe for this flaky, delicious combination of a muffin and a croissant, which can be infused with all sorts of flavors, invites you to come to her newly opened Sweet Dee’s Bakeshop for a taste. After working in the local culinary scene since 2011 at The Village Coffee and Creperie in Cave Creek and Soul Cafe in North Scottsdale, O’Day began getting personal requests for her desserts. “Whenever friends had special occasions coming up, parties to cater, and milestones to celebrate, they would always ask me to dream up a specialty cake or other desserts,” says O’Day, who began baking in high school and is completely self-taught. “Since 2015, I started fulfilling orders out of my house, but once word got out beyond my circle of friends, orders piled up – so much so, I decided to make this move and partnered with my mom, Lynda, to open my own storefront.” Enter local architect Cathy Hayes, known for her work in designing La Grande Orange Grocery, Chelsea’s Kitchen, Kaleidoscope Juice and North Italia.

“While actual sweet treats are Danielle’s forte, collaborating with chefs and business owners to develop restaurants, hotels and businesses that feel like a gathering location where relationships can grow and communities can flourish is my sweet spot,” Hayes says. According to Hayes, walking into Sweet Dee’s – which is 1,500 square feet including a patio – is designed to feel like a contemporary French bakeshop one would find in a trendy Los Angeles or New York City neighborhood. The central feature of the space is the massive pastry case, which, in addition to cruffins, boasts doughnuts, cookies, custom cakes, and tons of vegan and gluten-free options. Sweet Dee’s also serves breakfast and lunch, including avocado toast with lemon, fleur de sel, radish, cilantro, microgreens and a soft-boiled egg ($10); a salad with prickly pear tea-poached pears, whipped goat cheese, edible orchids, candied walnuts, arugula, and a honey vinaigrette ($11); and a caprese panini with organic pesto, mozzarella, tomatoes, roasted garlic, EVOO, and balsamic reduction on brioche bread ($11). “We offer Press Coffee, which is available by the cup or in lattes, espressos and mochas,” says O’Day, noting they also have smoothies, tonics, apple cider vinegar lemonade, and milkshakes. “You do not want to miss our milkshake flavor of the day, which runs the gamut from triple-chocolate to a truly outof-the-box purple ube yam option topped with a vanilla bean doughnut, whipped cream and edible orchid,” O’Day says. “Those with dietary restrictions can also enjoy them, as we also have a daily option that’s both dairy- and gluten-free.” Sweet Dee’s is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is closed Sunday.
